Sonic Expo 2024 Commissions

If you don't know this already, I'm a massive Sonic fan. So I attended Sonic Expo in Texas this year (LOVED IT, AMAZING, 11/10, will be there again) and got to draw all these beautiful Sonic OCs!!

Camin, the Raylo-colored one (lol) is actually mine! I was so hype that someone wanted a commission with him!! The last drawing is Primo, my NIGHTS OC, which is another SEGA IP that I've loved since childhood and often overlaps with Sonic fans.

Using the pronomial clitics me/te/etc. which in Central Catalan usually only come after the verb before verbs instead of the forms em/et/etc. - also note mos (= ens/nos) which also occurs in lots of other dialects of Catalan

Under the Radar: Jim Marks' Year-end List for 2023

Samuel Leipold, Jürg Bucher, Lucca Lo Bianco

The stream of great new music is constant and impossible to keep up with. Inevitably, some of it goes largely unnoticed. My year-end list consists of releases that I really enjoyed but didn’t get around to writing about and haven’t seen reviewed elsewhere in English. They are presented in no particular order.

Samuel Leipold, Jürg Bucher, Lucca Lo Bianco — Ostro (Ezz-thetics)

This trio of clarinet, double bass, and guitar delivers atmospheric free jazz. Experimental without being confrontational (included is a choice Jimmy Giuffre cover), Ostro offers a rarely heard sound palette and consistently interesting arrangements.

Luis Ribeiro — A Inven​ç​ã​o da Fic​ç​ã​o (Porta Jazz)

The Porta Jazz label out of Portugal released fewer records than usual this year, perhaps a lagging effect of Covid. One standout is the debut by guitarist and composer Ribeiro, who leads a sextet with tenor and baritone saxophones in the front line. Love the eerie vocalization on the opening track. Space age and swinging.

Adrián Royo Trío — Pangea (Errabal Jazz)

This Spanish release initially caught my eye in the La Habitacion de Jazz blog because of the involvement of double bassist Manel Fortià. Strong original melodies and tight interplay make for a standout piano trio recording in a great year for piano trios.

Javier Burin — Escenarios (Los Años Luz Discos)

Another excellent but low-profile piano trio release this year. The assuredness and inventiveness of Argentinian Burin’s playing are the more remarkable given that he is only in his early twenties; check out especially the unlikely cover of “Tenor Madness.”

Marcus Eads — Pride of Ostego (self-released)

This Minnesotan has been putting out gentle Takoma-style guitar music for more than a decade. Strongly rooted in the rural midwestern landscape, his playing and homespun compositions call to mind back porches, canoe trips, and sitting by the fireside.

Scott Tuma — Nobody’s Music (Haha)

I was thrilled to stumble across this unheralded release recently by the Souled American alumnus and one of the architects of slowcore. Apparently first appearing last year on cassette, Nobody’s Music, coming six years after No Greener Grass, delivers more ambling and spindly acoustic guitar lines that seem to drip out of the instrument with the occasional accompaniment of what sounds like harmonica or accordion. Enchanting as always.

Mohamed Masmoudi — Villes Éternelles (Centre des Musiciens du Monde)

Canadian oud master Masmoudi creates a compelling blend of Arabic music and jazz in a percussion-less quartet also featuring clarinet, piano, and double bass. With top-notch musicianship and catchy tunes, the group shows how good world music fusion can sound.

Jorge Abadias — Camins (Underpool)

The Underpool label documents the lively Barcelona jazz scene. Its 2023 releases include this quartet date led by guitarist Abadias. His original post-bop (in the broad sense) compositions tend toward slower tempos, and fine soloing abounds.

Jakob Dreyer — Songs, Hymns, and Ballads Vol. 2 (self-released)

Another solid post-bop quartet recording featuring original compositions. Three U.S. musicians fill out German double bassist Dreyer’s quartet, and this second volume nicely complements Vol. 1 released last year.

Various Artists — You Better Mind: Southeastern Songs to Stop Cop City (self-released)

This project, spearheaded by the Magic Tuber String Band (who also released the outstanding Tarantism in 2023), brings together a broad swath of musicians, including Joseph Allred, Shane Parish, Sally Anne Morgan, Nathan Bowles, the Tubers themselves, and some I was unfamiliar with. The music tends toward the rustic; much of it is excellent, and the cause is as noble as they come.

I think I remember you saying something about it way back when the very first playable build of it was made available, but what does "Vividerie" mean? And if you just came up with the word, was there like, a process? Portmanteau-ing or something like that?

Vividerie is a word I initially made up for an old album of mine. I really enjoy making up words, and I have some soft rules and methods of forming them, but none of it is really tangible enough to be described in great detail.

Usually I take one or more pre-existing words, cut out chunks and try to find morphemes from different languages or just letters to replace them.

Vividerie started out as just the word "Vivid", and then I played around with pre-, in-, and suffixes until I got "erie" at the end - I didn't intend the suffix to be this close to "eerie", but I feel like it works for both the track and the game.

Here's some of my favorite words and track names I've made for my music:

camine hue (derived from carmine, the color)

wolder (world, wonder, wold (a kind of grassland))

arc sancts (sanctuary)

whaity brise (brise is a german word for gentle wind; whaity is completely made up and felt light/calm as well)

hadenfeer (tried to name a fictional danish place one time)

incaden wavelets (I have no idea how I arrived at incaden; wavelets are a concept in signal processing)

circimona (probably started as mona, like the name)

isonier (was thinking a lot about isolation in electronics at the time)

When asked once about what made him different than anyone else, Lightnin’ Hopkins replied, “A bluesman is just different from any other man that walks this earth. The blues is something that is hard to get acquainted with. Just like death. The blues dwell with you everyday and everywhere.”

Lightnin’ was tremendously appealing for aspiring blues guitarists to emulate because his signature turnaround was relatively easy to learn, but it was extremely hard to replicate his sound because of his distinctive held notes, pauses, string bending, and shortened and lengthened measures. Sometimes, as bluesman Michael “Hawkeye” Herman points out, Lightnin’ “played it in triplets, sometimes as a quarter note, sometimes as an eighth note…. He knew how to play the same lick/riff forward, backward, from the middle to the front, from the middle to the back, from the back to the front … each effort creating a completely huge guitar vocabulary.” Ultimately, it didn’t matter what kind of guitar he was playing, acoustic or electric. “He just had this feel,” guitarist and luthier Sam Swank maintains, echoing the sentiments of so many Lightnin’ devotees. “There aren’t that many blues guitar players in the world that when you drop the needle on the record, anybody who’s anybody knows who that is. Lightnin’ Hopkins is one of those guitar players.”

“I’m keeping him.” The young woman announced as she walked up to the group, holding a small orange cat in her arms.

Kerri sighed “Jasmine, you can’t keep pets on the train, we’ve been over this.”

“His name is Theo, and he can catch mice for us! Please?” she begged.

“We have a whole damn lion on board, I think we’ll be fine without a mouser.” Bosco said, crossing her arms.

“He might keep us up at night, and we have an early rehearsal tomorrow.” Kerri pointed out. “I’ll help you take him back to where you found him, then we can all get to our bunks.” Kerri said as she escorted Jasmine outside.

Camden started walking with the group and looked at Willow next to her, “There’s some odd ones in this show, aren’t there?”

Willow snorted as they walked “I don’t think you really know what an American circus entails, then.”

FOLLOW HER - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: Quiver

SYNOPSIS: “Jess has finally found her hook: secretly filming creepy interactions she encounters via online job listings, and using the kinks of others to fuel her streaming success. For her next episode, she’s been hired by Tom to write the ending of a screenplay in a remote, lavish cabin. Once there, the alluring self-proclaimed screenwriter hands her a script in which the two of them are the main characters. This client isn’t what he seems, and even though the money’s great… the real payment here could cost her life.” - Quiver

REVIEW: FOLLOW HER is a cleaver idea that deals with the take down of an aggressive influencer whose karma catches up with her. Actress Dani Barker is also the film’s writer and a producer. She weaves together some interesting ideas, creates a character you’ll love to hate, and is an overall above average independent genre film.

The screenplay for FOLLOW HER tackles the arc of the main character Jess. It is made clear early on that she gives little thought to taking advantage of everyone, including her family, to get what she wants. She exploits people’s fetishes, she is usually careful, but something goes wrong with her latest encounter. Instead of taking it down, she leaves it online as it continues to trend and reaches a new level. When she comes across a writing opportunity that deals with themes she is familiar with, and pays good money, she throws caution to the wind and heads to the country to meet the screenwriter. What ensues is a game of cat-&-mouse as Jess comes to realize the setup is too perfect and there is something more going on than she expected or planned for. There are moments when Jess’s ego and greed overcomes her sense of self-preservation and ultimately the climax presents a strange twist that is an overthought “Absence of Malice.” The story does not end there. There is a scene with Jess, her father and the police that feels out of place and almost like an afterthought to the entire narrative. There is a final sequence that adds another level of the strange and bizarre, which also provides the title of the film. I was in for the majority of the tale, however the subsequent scenes felt unnecessary and bewildering.

Dani Barker and Luke Cook, the two main actors, carry the story. Barker portrays a mean girl, a self-absorbed influencer of today, and I enjoyed seeing her in danger. Yes, I was rooting for the bad guy, Tom. Luke’s Tom is a charming and twisted character, and the humor flows naturally. His performance reminds me of a cross between Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman and Jack Nicholson’s The Joker. The actors have a strong rapport and their on-screen interactions are believable and engaging. The actors have excellent chemistry, but their rapport creates a light-hearted atmosphere that undermines the suspense and makes it difficult for the audience to become fully invested in the story.

The production values are solid, the editing creates a nice pace for the majority of the film. The barn is an excellent location, the others are adequate. Jess has some interesting costume designs and Barker seems very comfortable in them.

FOLLOW HER, an adult-themed film that never achieves a level of seriousness and peril that I believe it should. There are excellent performances and some witty banter, but the story has two additional scenes, the first feels awkward and the second is an additional punchline that feels like it is there to simply set up the title of the film. Still, it is a deadly frolic where you can’t help but cheer for Jess’ demise.
