I include mentions of bilingual/multilingual MC, but I use the term MC and you interchangeably in the bullet points. It's the same thing who cares (you can also add whatever languages you think fit I am just going off vibes tbh)

★ Lucifer.

Since he was the strongest and highest ranked out of the brothers, his innate abilities were muddled the least.

This is to say that he remembers a lot from his innate knowledge as an angel, and can actually fare incredibly well on his own if you leave him in the human realm.

(the language he preferred back in his angel days was Archaic Latin, which is also Simeon's preferred language)

When Diavolo brought up the idea of the human exchange program he was like "(: ok" and binged human language for like two months straight like a total psychopath

He's like one of those fancy 10+ languages fluent polyglots (how)

Despite his fluency, it is rare to ever see him speak them. He has better things to do and prefers demon tongue.

Or if he does, the Loquar Ad Vos that was applied to you once you arrived in Devildom doesn't allow you to hear it.

Let's discuss the translations for this page from chapter 698 as well as the missing nuances

First we have the infamous line from Sasuke

「何度も・・・何度も・・・何度も・・・」

Nando mo… nando mo… nando mo...

Over and Over.... and Over and Over.....

Sasuke is essentially getting frustrated that after trying so many times he still isn't able to do it. Naruto is giving him so much work.

Let's look at how the official translation decides to paraphrase to it

..No matter how many times I try to knock you down...... Every single time you just keep on...

Not inaccurate but it still doesn't quite convey the frustration from the original Japanese line.

The next part is

「 いい加減におとなしく切られやがれ !! 」

「おとなしく」 has following meanings

If I had to do a literal translation of the sentence then it would be

Just be obedient and let it get cut already !!

The Viz version again does something different

Just give me a fucking break and fall already !!

Interestingly they also remove the part where Sasuke says he wants Naruto to obey/submit to him lol

I am not surprised they do that because keeping that in the sentence makes it sound..well

From the MangaPanda translation:

Anyways this was pretty trivial but yet another example of Viz's needless sanitisation of dialogues.

However neither of the English translations retain the original meaning for this part of the sentence

..and let it get cut already !!

"Fall already" or " let me kill you" are just not the same.

The original dialogue is purposefully vague, 'it ' refers to both the physical life of and the bond to Naruto

Next is Naruto's response

「そりゃ無理だゆい い.....」

That's impossible....

「その唯一がオレだからよ」

Because I am the (your?) one and only

'your' isn't written there but it is pretty much implied from their previous conversation.

Viz's translation:

I can't...

Because that is who I am

The entire flow of the conversation implies that Naruto can't die simply because he is HIM, which he was also saying, but these lines completely remove the implications that Naruto was also insinuating that he wasn't gonna let their bond get cut off because he is Sasuke's only one.

Also while we are at it can we also talk about the anime adaptation of the scene just before this conversation.

There are a lot of wrongs in the VOTE 2 fight and everything aside WHERE IS THE PROLONGED EYE CONTACT WITH NARUTO'S EYES ???

Reading Books in Your Target Language

My favorite way to read in a foreign language is to take a book and read it in my native language or english first, and then pick said book in my target language. This technique is even more helpful if you also pursue translation studies but that's a plus, not a requirement. Since I've already read it in a language I can fully comprehend and critically analyze, I am not only able to read the book in my TL much quicker, I'm also able to fully grasp how a native speaker would rephrase or interpret the same sentences.

If the TL book you're reading is a translated version, you're able to see which words the translator used to convey the meaning. This answers questions such as: Did they translate words literally? Did they use localization instead? What did they do with puns or jokes from the original book? What kind of rephrasing did they do? The translated version tells you how the translator think about certain sentences and certain kinds of writing. Sometimes your TL is a very literal and direct language. Sometimes your TL uses a lot of metaphors or polite sentences instead of being direct. You will learn to absorb these lines of thinking by reading the translated version.

If the TL book you're reading is the original version, you're about to see all the things I've said but flipped. You've got the way the line of thinking goes in the translation. Now you're gonna see how they go about it. And most of the time, this path sort of takes you like "oh! I don't know how to read/interpret this word at all but the translator used x to say it so I'm just going to keep reading." You will realize that you can read much faster, since you remember how it went. (unless it's non fiction since you can't follow the plot in nonfiction, but I find that in language learning, non fiction reading is much easier because there's less flowery and literary language.) I mostly do this when I want to read fast and have no need to reach for dictionaries or to refer to the translated version. This helps me read other text in my TL extremely faster.

Another tip about reading that has nothing to do with language reading more about bookish snobbery: a book is a book is a book. If your purpose is to read in your TL, you don't need to pick up classics if it's intimidating for you. Pick any book. Hell, pick pamphlets if you need. I personally prefer to read adult's graphic novels. I don't mean 18+ graphic novels. I just mean comics that are not for children. I find that children's picture books are much harder because most of them are to teach vocabularies to children, which is taxing for language learners because apparently children love onomatopoeia so much. Also, they have adults to explain everything to them. Comics for adults have jokes and stories instead so I like then better but hey, if you like children's picture books, you do you.

Another another tip: You don't have to finish the books. At all. Ever, actually. Pick up, do twenty pages each and put down if you'd like. You're the boss. Do it your style.

The Beef Stroganoff Song! (arbitrary subtitle discourse edition)

So, you may have noticed here that the subtitles in this clip (from Symphogear GX episode 3) are fairly different from what you're used to seeing when people post this video, and the phrasing in the subtitles is fairly different from what the associated memes often say

For those who don't know, Symphogear got itself released on blu-ray by Discotek, and with that came with a new translation authored by Noelle (@ulsairi on twitter ) who is notable for being the only trans lesbian anime translator I know of off the top of my head.

Her translation appears, in my opinion, really rather polished and very good, and I strongly appreciate the way it's written and how much character it adds to the dialogue by giving everyone distinct voices and adapting things into more natural English. It's also a fair bit gayer. I haven't encountered many people who've seen these subs, but I think most fans of the series would consider these a net positive change. There are some people who are mad about these subtitles, and they can die mad.

Anyway, let's talk about the different phrasing of the beef stroganoff song. I'm mostly going to compare to Crunchyroll's subtitles for reference since that seems to be what most others go off of. Here's a link to that version.

So right off the bat we can see here that while CR's translation appears to be a lot more, for lack of a better word, functional, Noelle's translation tries to apply more dialectal force "it's beef stroganoff/Yes! It's THAT beef stroganoff!" And generally communicate through the tone how excited the girls are to get started. Additionally you'll see throughout that the latter is a fair bit more lyrical, there's a lot more punctuation and verbal tics and filler phrases written into the dialogue to express that they are singing, which makes sense since Japanese tends to omit a lot of the sorts of prepositions that Noelle threw in here,

Like, Yumi (yes I went and looked up her name on the wiki) just says "beef stroganoffu" because it's obvious from context that it is beef stroganoff, she doesn't need to spell it out, at least, not in Japanese

(We know like maybe ten hiragana and 1 kanji do not trust us on Japanese this is all just basic shit we learned from online guides)

So this probably leads to a rushed translator from Crunchyroll (they are notoriously crunched for time) who's just trying to Get It Done probably not really bothering to throw in extra additional connecting letters to express the tone of the character, only doing so when it's required to make basic grammatical sense in the target language. So they likely didn't think to make the subtitles have flourishes like this that aren't explicitly in the original Japanese. Noelle meanwhile had the time to consider things like this and take such liberties in order to attempt to convey the same tone that was arguably implied by the Japanese, even if not explicitly put forth

And that's about all the things I should not repeat I guess, TL;DR, these subtitles are more fun to read because the translator had more time to think about the best way to make them more fun while still being accurate to the spirit of the original dialogue, who'd have thought!

(In case you're wondering, the Commie subtitles say kind of the same thing here, and y'know, it doesn't seem like a wrong translation, but also I really dislike this subtitle styling, orange on pink with that font and that drop shadow is just kinda bad. I appreciate the effort but like. Come on. Please fansubbers, please think about if the font and colors you chose actually work with the image you're putting them on)

Moving on!

horizontal and middle rhyme with each other so you can almost actually sing this, actually let me take a moment to try it right now- never mind, I can't sing. Hahaha. I don't actually think it lines up that well with the melody But I thought it did! Didn't I? That's significant, that this actually reads like plausible lyrics to a silly song someone made up instead of a literal translation of a Japanese song

Anyway, here comes the first major difference!

So in the Crunchyroll subtitles, Yumi says "it doesn't have to be beef" which in English (in my estimation) sounds a tad scatterbrained, like, "oh yeah sure beef but whatever really it doesn't actually matter," while Noelle's subtitles rather say "Got no beef? Don't you worry!" Which implies something different.

"It is recommended to use beef, but you may substitute something else if you are sorely lacking in beef" as opposed to "Oh the beef doesn't actually matter, zoinks lol!" CR's translation is kind of a bit funnier in how it sorta comes from nowhere without this qualification, which probably lead to this phrase's memeticness, but Noelle's translation seems more reasonable to me so yeah again, tada, yay for sensicalness.

Now here's another interesting change:

Again, the flat manner in which the CR subtitles say "finish with salt" with rendezvous only being included because that's literally what they said, is sort of absent any stronger emotional implication,

Noelle's translation meanwhile going with "don't forget them, they need it" imparts personhood upon the salt and pepper. The implication being that the girls are saying, "the salt and pepper are in love, please reunite them, they must be in gay love together." Or maybe you think the salt and pepper cannot be forgotten and must be reunited because they are Only Friends.

Whether you choose to believe that this is the salt and pepper getting married, or merely subtext, or an interpretation, or salt and pepper shipping bait, this is a deeply important tonal indicator because it reminds you that these girls are ultimately playing with their food!

"And there, now you're in for a treat!" I don't think I need to explain this one.

Now, here's an interesting one!

In the Crunchyroll subtitles, it just says the memetic "boys don't know this." With no context, no elaboration, no clarity, no qualifiers. Boys don't know. Did the boys magically get their brains wiped? Are the boys biologically incapable? Who knows. Nothing is said but that.

Noelle's subtitles, on the other hand, qualify this statement by saying "Boys aren't taught to cook, so they may not know" (And note again how, it says "kno-ow" to emphasize, once more, that they're singing, and also this lines up with the long "ooooo" sound they make at the end of this lyric, so cool)

There is now context! Boys aren't taught to cook! Anime and Japan's culture in general still pigeonholes people into gender roles! And an anime translator just wrote you a hidden translation note about it! You might be a boy, you might know how to cook, but certain boys in another part of the world aren't traditionally taught cooking, so they may not know

They may not, but they could!

Trust a trans person to express gender facts with subtle nuances like this in anime translations.

And with that lovely bit of good translation and good writing and good localization of a thing to make it make sense to people

I wanted to know what the actors said at certain moments as ad libs and in closing speech, so I asked my fellow Chinese fans for help 🙏 So let me share what I've learnt ^^ (links to both vids I'll be refering to are in the replies).

March 10th, night: Wu Yihan, Shu Rongbo, Qian Anqi

During 'Guiding light', by the end of CXS&LG part, Wu Yihan wishes Shu Rongbo 'Happy birthday!' and hugs him :>

They laugh a lot (more than usual) during the closing speech >< I recommend you watch it, because Qian Anqi starts talking in English at some point (to srb's utter confusion) and along with Guo Zhenyan they insist on singing 'Happy birthday' together, it's cute :>

Around 8:50 timestamp, Shu Rongbo jokes 'If you like our musical, you can help us promote it more. If you don't like it, please send me a message quietly 🙏'

Then Wu Yihan explains they are going to take a picture together (forbday post on musical's weibo). It goes: 'Please turn on your phone's flash and take a photo with us', but according to 钵🐼 he said wrong words. As in being too excited and stumbling on a formula (?), that's why they laugh ^^'

March 11th: Teng Chunpeng, Du Guangyi, Wu Hanglu

Here I was curious about the changed lyrics that were picked in a Valentine's Day Project (@chocolatexiaoshi explained 🌟). The whole song is based on a word play, so it's hard to fully grasp by non-chinese speakers BUT I'LL TELL YOU ANYWAY BC IT'S COOL 😤🔥

The deal with 'Words can't convey the love' is that CXS is possesing Chen Xiao and is supposed to confess to Liu Meng. He starts saying 'I like'-/Wǒ xǐhuān/我喜欢' and backs off by saying a different phrase with similar pronounciation to '喜xi'.

In original lyrics he says sth like 'To do laundry and cooking/ Xǐyī zuò fàn/ 洗衣做饭' in first verse. In second verse it's 'I like your outfit today/Xǐhuān nǐ jīntiān de chuān yī dǎbàn/喜欢你今天的穿衣打扮'.

The special encore version was: 1) 'Scrambled eggs with tomatoes/ Xīhóngshì chǎo jīdàn /西红柿炒鸡蛋', 2) 'I like to add three bowls of rice/Wǒ xǐhuān zài jiā shàng sān wǎn dàmǐ fàn/ 我喜欢再加上三碗大米饭'. It's a reference to how Cheng Xiaoshi loves delicious food, so it looks like he's panicking and starts babbling about food ><🧡

HOWEVER at the very end, Teng Chunpeng says full 'I like you/Wǒ xǐhuān nǐ/我喜欢你'. Which doesn't happen in a main plot script, only this one time (coincidentally when Lu Guang's actor is in place of Liu Meng hmmm).

I hope the translation was comprehensible >< As a reward look at Shu Rongbo and Wu Yihan covering the candle flame with their hands 😭💖 I really really like the imagery, it fits shiguang so well ;w;

On Writing Characters That Don't Or Can't Speak English

This such a fun dynamic, honestly and more fantasy and sci-fi should implement it. You don’t even have to design a fantasy language, although writing that character’s un-written dialogue constantly as narration might get old.

I haven’t done this with any real-world languages or cultures but a tiny advisory: Take care in how you describe the cadence, tonality, and gesticulations of characters meant to represent real world cultures speaking in their languages. You can get unintentionally discriminatory very quickly, so do your research and hire sensitivity readers.

With that said!

There’s a few points I want to cover here.

1. How your characters communicate without dialogue

This also concerns characters that cannot learn the dominant language, whether they’re a fantasy character that just can’t make those sounds, or they’re deaf or mute or have another disability that makes verbal communication difficult.

You have so many options and you can have so much fun with it. You can make your own version of a sign language or a code language that only your core characters or a group they belong to can communicate in. Create your own pidgin or medium of communication, like a soundboard of different tonalities or a thought-to-speech translator like a Speak n’ Spell, or an Etch A Sketch, or have a magic hologram subtitle display before them. Or like the Q*Bert dialogue bubbles in Wreck it Wralph where the translation is never given, only the detailed response so you can fill in the blanks.

One of my favorite cartoons is Transformers Prime. It’s based off the character designs from the Bay live action movies, not the original cartoons, so the machines they transform into are modern and updated and there’s a few references to the Bay movies’ lore sprinkled about, but not a required watch for appreciating the show.

In it, Bumblebee carries over his inability to speak due to a damaged voice box. I imagine he now communicates in a series of beeps and bleeps because the cartoon didn’t want to pay the licensing fees for Movie Bee’s jukebox dialogue, but it works way better here. Why? Because, I think, and I do not suffer from any speech impediments, that it better conveys the struggles of a disability.

Bee never speaks and his dialogue is never subtitled. The audience is only clued into what he’s saying when other characters respond to him in an unambiguous way so, like Q*Bert, you can fill in the blanks. He isn’t universally understood, either, only one human and the other transformers can understand him, so when he’s with other humans in a dangerous situation, their inability to bridge the language gap becomes a very real problem (that no one ever blames Bee for).

Also, Bee is never once insulted, belittled, demeaned, or mocked for his speech impediment and he’s a badass character in his own right. He’s not “the robot with the speech impediment” he’s “the badass sportscar scout with a heart of gold, and who also has a speech impediment”. The only time it’s talked about negatively is by the main villain, who’s trying to be an asshole about it, but even then, Megatron never thinks Bee is less capable for it, he just thinks everyone is lesser than himself across the board (Megatron is also responsible for his disability ‘cause Bee was captured and his interrogation went poorly, if you needed another exhibit of the Big M’s sadism).

Bee’s damaged voice box is almost never central to his arc, either. He gets one two-parter where he loses his ability to transform and takes it super hard, since he’s already damaged and sees himself as less useful than the rest of the team without this critical ability.

Again, I don’t have this disability so I can’t comment on how respectful it actually is to those who do, but from an outsider’s perspective, I think Bee is a fantastic example of empowering disabled characters and giving them substance beyond their disability—cannot comment on how they ended his arc and resolved the impediment, or that it was resolved at all.

2. How you describe those unwritten words

Doubling down here: Do your research so you aren’t stereotypical and insensitive, please.

Still going off the assumption that you aren’t just writing this dialogue in the other language for now, like a character who only speaks in Spanish and you have the dialogue there in Spanish that I may have to translate separately, like in Spiderverse, or the Gaelic in Outlander, neither of which were subtitled for non-native speakers.

Since you don’t have the dialogue there, you are relying entirely on tone of voice, gesture, volume, and facial expressions, so dial your descriptions of those up to eleven—especially if this is a character who over-gesticulates to better get their point across.

You can also have the characters they’re closest to pick up on a few of their common or significant phrases to convey the connection and friendship they share.

In Outlander, at least the first season when they’re actually in Scotland (easily the best season), there’s entire scenes in Gaelic and all you have as an audience member is their tone of voice and gesticulations, and sometimes you just have to presume the gist of the scene because an English speaker isn’t present and they only give the gist a few scenes later. One in particular comes at the end of the season after an extremely traumatic event that happened to Character A, arguing over why he wants to end his life to Character B. One would think that this gut wrenching dialogue would be critical to understanding the scene but the two actors go above and beyond conveying the critical emotions behind what they’re saying, so the words don’t even matter. If you were deaf, you’d understand the scene as effectively as someone who doesn’t speak Gaelic.

Can’t confirm but I think they did this very much on purpose because Gaelic isn’t getting any more commonly spoken and you’re meant to feel a little alienated by it and only those who know Gaelic can get the full scene, like it's just for them. Can’t confirm the accuracy of the dictation or translation of the language, either, but the ‘alienating’ effect always leaves me utterly fascinated by the language. You cannot ignore the Gaelic to just drone through the subtitles, you have to pay attention.

3. How that character bumbles through the dominant language

This one is for non-disabled bi or multilingual characters or those who could learn the dominant language but haven’t had the time or opportunity. Depending on the character’s skill with the language, they can Spanglish their way through with awkward parsing still using their native languages grammar rules.

I can’t speak to this, I only know very clunky Spanish. I can say my efforts to speak in Spanish are always done in excitement as I get the chance to practice this language, and then the pressure to translate on the spot has me forgetting words I definitely know how. I get by, even if my conjugations are botched, and me, looking as I do, definitely catch people off guard when I respond to them in Spanish, generally followed by smiles at my attempts.

Just recently I had to perform tech support for a family in my apartment complex. They needed to print a thing and the printer wasn’t connecting. We gestured and pointed our way through getting their files onto my USB drive and plugging that direct into the printer, and doing one copy at a time, it was a whole thing with me bumbling through printer tech support in basic Spanish because they didn’t know a single word of English. But by god, we did it.

4. The conflicts that arise from mismatched dialogue

On a more big picture level, miscommunication through to a mistranslation can range from comedic to critically life-threatening, and it can be a recurring hurdle for the character or team to consider and plan for.

Comedy wise, mistranslations can be hilarious. Characters blanking on the word they need and being entertainingly frustrated, or taking a roundabout way to get to the word they need by piecing it together. Characters who don’t get a joke that only native speakers would know, or translating a joke in their language that isn’t as funny in another language without the other parlance.

Or just two characters who have to cooperate to survive and who don't have a common language to make that cooperation easier. I *love* gratuitously violent action movies and just the action genre in general, even if the story is cheesy or dumb. One of those movies is Alien vs Predator. In it, eventually, Protagonist 'enemy of my enemy's her way into an alliance with one of the Predators, against the much larger Xenomorph threat.

He doesn't speak anything other than growls and she only speaks English and though the movie overexplains many things (probably because the producers didn't trust the audience like the writers did), they have several moments together where he has to give her critical survival information, like "I have a failsafe bomb with a very short delay we need to run right now" and "Use this meat shield to protect yourself against their acid blood" and "You're an honorary Predator warrior now I must do this ritual for you" and can only mime his way through it, and through the power of gesture and charades, they make it work.

Drama wise, I live for big problems coming unexpectedly from small, human mistakes. One translation error can snowball into some horrible consequences.

Big picture, though, you do your fantasy or sci-fi world a disservice by not considering multiple languages, even if you don’t write them, or multilingual characters and the problems and world biases that arise from these different groups. Dead languages, rare languages, languages associated with the villain group or minorities. Languages that only one character is fighting to keep alive, or a language that, when spoken, comes with some sinister side effects (like Parseltongue or the Black Speech, the language of Mordor).

It really adds to the immersion when you have an expansive story that doesn’t just assume English/Common is the law of the land, or that all your fantasy/alien species can or want to speak it.

Finally, the introduction of the Ultimates! Yay! First, let's start with Hifumi's self-introduction, which I thought would be absolutely difficult to translate.

Oh, I see. "すべての始まりにして終わりなる者" is translated as "The Alpha and the Omega". It's a nice way of translating.

One thing I was very curious about in the translation of Hifumi's lines is how he refers to others, because this is related to a trick in chapter3. It seems that he calls others "Mr. + last name". I see, I see. In the original, he refers to other people as "their full name + an honorific (殿)". So if it was reproduced in the English version, he would call Makoto "Mr. Makoto Naegi", but the trick in chapter 3 would only work if the last name came first, so I guess the first name was omitted.

Leon has a lot of interesting lines for me because I have a limited vocabulary of informal English. But I think he speaks more normally than I expected. I think the original version is even more disorganized in its wording. (It is difficult to give a detailed explanation, so I will leave out the details!)

I think "super cool to the max!" is a good translation because it gives a silly impression. In the original, it was "マキシマム(maximum)にカッケー". I think the literal translation would be "maximum cool!" or something like that. It is a silly and grammatically odd expression that is halfway mixed with English.

haha, in the EN text, the fact that Sayaka bowed was removed. A literal translation of the original text would probably be something like this:

"The way she bowed is beautiful and I can't help but admire..."

Yeah, bowing is an act based on Japanese culture, so I guess it was removed to avoid confusion about what it means.

The original text only says that fishermen have become very popular, but the context means that fishermen have become popular as romantic partners, which is expressed in the English version as 'fishermen quickly shot to the top of every "Hottest Men" poll ', and it is very clear.

Ah, the word "お姉様" has been omitted, perhaps because it is difficult to translate. Actually, I am very curious as to how this can be translated. hehe, it's funny how Makoto's line is much harsher in the original. In the EN text he said he WAS way off, but in the original one, he said "作家としての豊かな想像力が間違った方向に働いた例だな…". If I were to translate it, it would probably be something like this:

Ah, apparently I did not understand how difficult it is to translate Taka's lines. He's smart enough to use difficult words, so it's hard to translate that into English while keeping the word count within the limits of the line!

The translation "educational crusade" is interesting. In the original, he's just using a little difficult wording to say let's do our best to do schoolwork together. But as it is, it doesn't convey that he's using exaggerated language, so it feels like it's been largely changed.

Ohhh, I finally got to see the line that explains why he is called Taka in the English fandom. The corresponding line "Anyway, you can call me Taka." does not exist at all in the original text. Is Kiyotaka hard to say from English speakers' point of view, so it became Taka? I am curious why.

Mini-Review: The Vampire Dies in No Time

"Invincible" vampire Draluc is...incredibly vincible, actually, turning into a pile of dust at the slightest provocation; he just revives almost immediately. When vampire hunter Ronaldo blows up Draluc's castle, the vampire decides to move in with the hunter, become a partner and metaphorically-popcorn-munching observer of all the weirdos, both human and vampire, who lurk in Shin-Yokohama.

This is another one of those shows that got me because I thought I wouldn't care about it, and then ended up enjoying myself. I came across this on Crunchyroll's 24/7 live Roku channel, looking for something to put on in the background while I did chores, and it's a good, effective show for that purpose! It came on frequently and hit that sweet spot of "entertaining to watch" and "I don't need to pay attention the whole time" that I want for background shows; eventually I realized I was enjoying it enough that I went and watched the whole series, both seasons, as my after-work dinner accompaniment.

Now, the entire reason I thought I wouldn't care? The title bugs me. I can't say that it's wrong, because Draluc sure does die in no time. (Witness:)

But there's something about the title that doesn't sound like natural English for the subject: Draluc dies all the time for virtually no reason (or every reason). It doesn't actually affect enjoyment of the show, and anyone on the English localization side of things didn't have a choice because "The Vampire Dies in No Time" is there, on screen, in English, every episode in the original Japanese version, which makes me assume it was a decision made more by people in Japan. But I wonder what localizers would've come up with to convey the same thing if they'd been given the opportunity.

Because I initially watched whatever episodes were on TV, I didn't start at the beginning, and that would be my recommendation: starting with an episode that's not the first. The first episode sets things up, true, but it's nothing you can't figure out within two minutes of the second's beginning, and because it's invested in setting everything up, it's one of the weaker episodes.

Instead, start with the second episode. Literally all you need to know is 1) Ronaldo is a vampire hunter who 2) lives with Draluc, a vampire [so clearly all vampires aren't bad] because 3) he kinda caused Draluc's castle to explode. And 4) Draluc dies a lot.

(You can watch the first episode later, like a flashback, after you've actually had a chance to decide if you like it. Because seriously, the first episode felt like it was dragging so much.)

Anyway.

It's funny, and each episode is comprised of a couple mini-sodes following a character as something happens. That might be Ronaldo having to hunt or take in a vampire, or it could be a coworker in the vampire hunter guild, or it could be John the armadillo going on a donut run, or it could be Draluc's family reunion.

It doesn't take itself seriously at all.

It's worth noting that much of the humor is going to be borderline-appropriate depending on your situation; this definitely isn't something I'd feel comfortable watching at work, for instance. Nudity and light sexuality are common topics—one vampire foe, Nudenium, is just a guy with a bunch of flowers for a groin and his bite will similarly turn people nude with flowers, because...he wants to spread groin-flowers, I guess? When he's not doing that he's pretty reasonable and friendly, as later episodes show; Micro Bikini's bite will turn people into a hypnotized horde of micro-bikini-wearers; Mr. Lewd Talk is self-explanatory. (Not all vampires are sexual, but these three show up with some frequency, to the point where they are legit secondary characters who contribute to the plot in various ways.)

(Also, it becomes clear as the series progresses that many of the vampires are just, for lack of a better term, dicking around. Sure, some want world domination. Some just want to spread weird flower-children-with-legs throughout parks. Some could be normal people except they just really, really prefer to dedicate their lives to playing strip rock-paper-scissors.)

What I enjoyed about it is how it balances humor with entertaining character stories. Nothing is going to get really deep, but you do get to know characters, and the same secondary and tertiary characters—both the good and theoretically-antagonist— come up again and again. Some of the vampires are related to each other! Some of the hunters are related to each other, or have been friends for years. Ronaldo went to high school with one of the police's vampire division guys, who's mad because his mom likes Ronaldo's blog-turned-bestseller-book about vampire hunting.

Draluc and Ronaldo make a fun pairing in an odd couple-type way. Draluc is, to Ronaldo's chagrin, a good roommate: an excellent cook, pretty clean, generally handles social situations well. Doesn't have (or need) a job, so he's available to follow along and help with vampire hunting situations (although probably a solid 50% of that is him following out of curiosity and boredom). The two are emotionally around the same level (young adults functional enough to live independently but childish enough to try and settle an argument with a dance-off).

I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Draluc's familiar, an armadillo named John. We all love John, in-universe and out. He's sweet. He can DJ. He has a fan club. He has a backstory. He is a cinnamon roll.

Verdict

English dub? Yes, only the first season (there are two seasons). It's very good matching the cadence and character of the original, and I really missed it when I watched the second season. Dub Draluc is given a stereotypical "vampire" accent and sounds pretty smooth and put-together, which goes with his high-class family background, which is context I can't get from his Japanese voice.

Visuals: Modern and fine. Nothing stood out to me, but neither did I find myself thinking about any problems.

Worth watching? Yes. It's a solid, consistently-funny comedy, pick it up if you're looking for a laugh. Don't be scared off by the often low-brow humor I mentioned; it tries to walk a fine line between jokes and going too far, and I think it generally succeeds, so it's worth at least trying. It helps that the episodes move at a brisk, but not breakneck, pace, meaning jokes usually don't overstay their welcome.

Ok so I just wanted to say this : I got some people telling me that I was arguing semantics when debunking the vid. And that worries me cause in media analysis, you ARE supposed to play semantics...

Which actually made me realize that most of the video essays on ytb analyzing supports or dialogue never really questionned why a character speaks in a certain way and how it conveys their personality, what does it shows about said character and the overall effect.

While there is not one way to analyze a media, in general the literacy ask you to try to ask yourself what something represent symbolically and that can comes through the use of words. Which is why I insist on using the jpn version for Engage. Each language has its own rules, system and own semantics with all the subtlelty and nuance possible. This is what makes translation so hard, the fact that you have to choose the right words to properly render the nuance of the original sentence without adding or removing in meaning. Even then, you can't rely on translation one hundred percent to study the writing of a media. Words are tools, and they create effects by creating meaning. That's why studying semantics is important and checking the original text is.

In japanese there is several words with different nuance that English can't take into account. You can say "I" by either using watashi, boku, ore, atashi, washi, ware/waga/ga, jibun etc. And all of those have slight different nuance due to the practice linked to those words, the context in which they are usually refered to and so on and so on. Each information transmitted by the text is important, the wording and how it is said, all of this are another way of showing something.

And also, taking into account the subtext behind a character's silence.

Take chapter 2 for example, in chapter 2, when Lumera told Alear she hoped they would view her as a mother like they used to 1 000 years ago, Alear remained silent and made a rather sad face, showing their uneasyness. This silent is playing into the many instance of foreshadowing in Engage, where Alear's lack of familiarity towards Lumera is apparent. Their awkward reaction comes from the fact that Lythos Castle and Lumera don't ring a bell and when you know the truth behind all of this, it all makes sense that Alear would not feel familiar with that place.

Yes I play with semantics, but playing with semantics is essential in an analysis. I know the meme of the "curtain are blue means nothing deep" made a lot of damage, but every choice matters. The "curtains are blue" means something : either it is linked to the mood of whoever choose the curtains, either it is a choice made by the author to create "un effet de réel" to quote Barthes, an element that might play later on, existing for aesthetic reason to create a sonority like Flaubert used to.

If you never try to look into a sentence, you won't obtain a deeper analysis and will only stay on a surface level.

Translation notes:

"OP sort of powerset" was literally translated as something like "cheat-like." I feel like OP is the more common English term for that sort of thing, so that's what I used, but some of the meaning was probably lost there.

"Older-tween-ish" was specifically a reference to a particular middle school year for children who are about 12-13 years old. Since grades and names of grades vary a lot from country to country, I just went with "older tween."

There is a close up of the ceremonial dressing's fastenings underneath the metal decoration. Some more notes highlight details on his staff, emphasizing the hourglass on top and the small wheel to the side that can be turned to flip the hourglass. A larger piece of text underneath one fullbody drawing reads, "Character Who Manipulates Time."

On the second half of the second page, there are drawings of some beta designs for Quahaug. He looks much more punk-ish. On one bust-up portrait, there are the captions, "The burden of the time demon caused some of his hair to go gray…." and "All-natural highlighted tips." On the same portrait, he is snapping his fingers, and there's a note that reads, "Manipulating time is as easy as snapping your fingers. You just have to want it or whatever." In March, I did a search for Pedro, and Google took me to Tumblr. I knew nothing about fanfiction and a new world opened up to me.

I discovered the accounts of @swiftispunk, @toxicanonymity 🖤🫶, @walkintotheriveranddisappear, @javiscigarette… and so many more since then. Each of them has a different writing style, different ways of conveying feelings and emotions, different Joels and Javis.

For several months, I’ve been reblogging my favorite stories, gifs, photos. I started to interact shyly, little by little.

And then, three months ago, I thought, why not write something of my own? Except... I'm French, I learned English by watching films and series in their original version with french subtitles. Writing in another language was quite a challenge.

Thanks to this community that I tiptoed into, I met @not-a-unique-snowflake-blog . She’s an angel who reads and corrects each of my stories before I post them. Without her, I would never have written, so Kate, thank you babe 💕🫶

Japanese text - English - French - German - Spanish

I couldn't help but notice something different about the English translation of this interaction between Sidon and Yona at Mipha's Court, while watching someone play that part. It felt like they added a lot of romantic connotations to it, so I searched for various versions to compare with the original Japanese and choices in translation. I don't know enough subtleties about all of the languages I looked up to be sure what kind of tone exactly they went for but something like the added very last sentence of the English version do stick out a lot.

In other versions, Yona tends to simply call him Sidon but in the English one, it's like she can't address him without a variety of affectionate/romantic add-ons.

One or two "dear Sidon" (or something similar) here and there to convey closeness/affection wouldn't have stuck out but the fact that it seems to be almost every sentence makes it feel so exaggerated, almost to the point of ridiculousness? At least that's how it felt to me, compared to my first impression with the French version.

There's not as much level of hate in JP spaces because they read the original dialogues in the way as intended by the author and not the shitty localised version by a biased translator. Idk if you are on twitter but the translator has ruined the last 2-3 chapter translations. And also when Tomura escaped AFO's control and when Hawks lost the quirk. And that's why JP fans understand the themes better than the English fans.

Not gonna say Caleb Cook has never gotten anything wrong, but I generally think he gets it right more often than not. I've seen when fans try to correct the translations, and sometimes the nuance is captured, sometimes not at all. And as if fans can't be biased as well.

I distinctly remember when English-speaking fans tried to claim that Dabi in chapter 306 was saying something along the lines of 'the exposure of Endeavor's abuse was not enough for people to care'. That was completely wrong. Caleb's translation of Dabi saying 'he didn't go far enough/Endeavor needs more bullying' was the correct one. I know this because I took a look at it myself. However, my translation could be flawed too. So I look to the Japanese tweets that quoted that sentence saying things like “Dabi-kun, are you taking lessons from demons (in sadism)?" or "You've tortured your family enough... stop it," or cheered him on, wanting to know what horrible moves Dabi will think of next. What the author intended here was to show Dabi wants to completely break Endeavor's spirit and soul, but English-speaking fans point blank said 'no, that's not how I want it'.

Meanwhile, English-speaking fans are very eager about Caleb's translation of Yoichi saying Shigaraki was groomed to be full of hatred, or Shigaraki telling AFO that he knows AFO groomed him. The original japanese is actually "that was how he was raised/brought up," and "that was how you raised me/brought me up". With context, yeah, Yoichi and Shigaraki is saying that AFO raised him up in a negative way, he was raised in malicious conditions - 'groomed' is indeed one possible translation, but I personally think that word is loaded with connotations that makes it more charged than the original japanese. I would've gone with 'brought up', maybe 'trained'.

I'm not defending Caleb here, exactly. I think he did a disservice when he translated Toga's line about Saito thinking she's not human as 'Saito will think I'm a freak'. The gist is the same - Saito will be repulsed by her - but for me, 'not human' better fits the context of Toga's life's journey to be seen as normal, as a regular human being. I have no idea what he was thinking when he translated Spinner's 'Shigaraki-tachi' (Shigaraki and the others/Shigaraki's group) as only 'Shigaraki' when Spinner woke up Kurogiri.

For the most part, Caleb's just trying to capture the feel of things, then make sure it's convey in a natural sounding manner. Lots of potential for disagreement in the process. As someone once puts it, you are guarantee to fail when translating, so what you're doing is deciding how to fail. And failure also means different things to different people.

Caleb gets things right, and gets things wrong. From my observations, English-speaking fans think Caleb gets things right when the translations fits into their pre-existing conceptualizations and never question it; and English-speaking fans think Caleb is so terrible he should be fired when translations don't fit their pre-existing conceptualizations. Where does the bias come from? Trick question, it's in everyone.

So is the hate because Caleb's translation isn't accurate and people misunderstood bnha's themes? I gotta say, not really. Is the hate because people have a vision of what bnha should be like in their head, and get angry when canon goes a different path? I think this is more likely. I don't think it's the whole reason. But its contribution is there.

Whether or not this is the reason why Japanese fandom spaces seems - to me - to have less hate than English speaking fandom spaces, I don't know. Like I said, maybe the hate levels are the same because I'm just looking at the nice things that floats at the top as I wade through Japanese fandom, but haven't dive down into the deep sea hate, while I enter a submersible to be crushed by the high pressure hate every time I return to the English speaking fandom.
