“Sid has become a romantic hero. Like James Dean, nobody really cares what he was like, because he took such a good picture and, according to the script, flamed out so spectacularly. Sid did not care: he took a bad idea - the rock'n'roll suicide theatrically rehearsed by Bowie and Iggy - and ran with it all the way to the other side … Sid was named after [Johnny] Lydon's pet hamster, recalling the Lou Reed song that, with its slicing guitar, kicked off the Transformer album. It was a laugh, because Sid wasn't Vicious then: he was goofy, funny, very style-conscious - a Bowie boy. As the Slits' guitarist Viv Albertine says in the documentary [In Search of Sid], he was "kind of sweet really". But he wasn't called Sid Sweet. Vicious was a strong name to be saddled with. The script was set, and, like many scripts, it took over the actor to the point where person and persona became fatally blurred. "Be careful what you set yourself up for" should be one pop culture motto, and Sid was more vulnerable than most.”
/ From “Sid Vicious: Little boy lost” by Jon Savage (author of England’s Dreaming) in The Guardian, January 2009 /
Born on this day sixty-seven years ago: doomed Sex Pistols bassist, ultimate punk pin-up and half of punk’s most infamous couple, Sid Vicious (né John Simon Ritchie, 10 May 1957- 2 February 1979).

Having just finished a book that catalogs the English Punk movement, following the Sex Pistols. I saw this and fucking thought of the horror that was Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious' relationship I suck at telling when things are jokes, I assume this is one, but also like I'm pretty such this is how their relationship went...

The queen of England was chasing me through a 2D city and then she became Godzilla with badly edited 90s laser eyes and told me to cut my head off.

“Siouxsie and the Banshees played off Siouxsie’s dominatrix-style hauteur against three pretty-boy musicians. By the late autumn, they were playing songs full of awkward twists, casual brutalities, mass media trash and the intense excitement of ambition outstripping ability … The Banshees’ first album, The Scream, was very Ballardian: a cool, malevolent sweep through a landscape of decay. Together with Siouxsie’s trademark make-up and hairstyle, this was a new English Gothick …”
/ From England’s Dreaming: Sex Pistols and Punk Rock by Jon Savage, 1991 /
“In 1976, Siouxsie Sioux (Susan Ballion) and Steve Severin were part of the clique of steady suburban London Sex Pistols fans known as the Bromley Contingent … From such uncertain beginnings, Siouxsie and the Banshees quickly evolved into a highly popular band, regularly appearing on the British charts despite the group’s brooding, abrasive style. In fact, the group was largely responsible for the spread of chilly romanticism as an appealingly remote stylistic statement. The Scream capsulized the first-generation sound of the Banshees: Siouxsie’s icy, sometimes tuneless wail swooping over the metal-shard roar of John McKay’s guitar and the brutish rhythms of bassist Severin and drummer Kenny Morris. The songs are relentlessly grim, albeit often sardonic (as in “Carcass” and a version of the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter”)."
/ From The Trouser Press bio of Siouxsie and the Banshees /
Released on this day (13 November 1978): The Scream, the startling, game-changing debut album by British punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. For legions of black t-shirted punks, goths, queers and misfits, life would never be the same! Now sing along with me: “Should I throw things at the neighbours / Expose myself to strangers? / Kill myself or ... you? / Now my memory gets hazy / I think I must be crazy / But my string snapped / I had a relapse ... A suburban relapse …” Portrait of Siouxsie by Fin Costello.

I was in a murder mystery escape castle run by King Charles III of England. The more puzzles I solved, the clearer it became that he actually had murdered someone.
