🎄💾🗓️ Day 11: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The SEL 840A🎄💾🗓️
Systems Engineering Laboratories (SEL) introduced the SEL 840A in 1965. This is a deep cut folks, buckle in. It was designed as a high-performance, 24-bit general-purpose digital computer, particularly well-suited for scientific and industrial real-time applications.
Notable for using silicon monolithic integrated circuits and a modular architecture. Supported advanced computation with features like concurrent floating-point arithmetic via an optional Extended Arithmetic Unit (EAU), which allowed independent arithmetic processing in single or double precision. With a core memory cycle time of 1.75 microseconds and a capacity of up to 32,768 directly addressable words, the SEL 840A had impressive computational speed and versatility for its time.
Its instruction set covered arithmetic operations, branching, and program control. The computer had fairly robust I/O capabilities, supporting up to 128 input/output units and optional block transfer control for high-speed data movement. SEL 840A had real-time applications, such as data acquisition, industrial automation, and control systems, with features like multi-level priority interrupts and a real-time clock with millisecond resolution.
Software support included a FORTRAN IV compiler, mnemonic assembler, and a library of scientific subroutines, making it accessible for scientific and engineering use. The operator’s console provided immediate access to registers, control functions, and user interaction! Designed to be maintained, its modular design had serviceability you do often not see today, with swing-out circuit pages and accessible test points.
And here's a personal… personal computer history from Adafruit team member, Dan…
== The first computer I used was an SEL-840A, PDF:
I learned Fortran on it in eight grade, in 1970. It was at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where my parents worked, and was used to take data from cyclotron experiments and perform calculations. I later patched the Fortran compiler on it to take single-quoted strings, like 'HELLO', in Fortran FORMAT statements, instead of having to use Hollerith counts, like 5HHELLO.
In 1971-1972, in high school, I used a PDP-10 (model KA10) timesharing system, run by BOCES LIRICS on Long Island, NY, while we were there for one year on an exchange.
This is the front panel of the actual computer I used. I worked at the computer center in the summer. I know the fellow in the picture: he was an older high school student at the time.
The first "personal" computers I used were Xerox Alto, Xerox Dorado, Xerox Dandelion (Xerox Star 8010), Apple Lisa, and Apple Mac, and an original IBM PC. Later I used DEC VAXstations.
Dan kinda wins the first computer contest if there was one… Have first computer memories? Post’em up in the comments, or post yours on socialz’ and tag them #firstcomputer #retrocomputing – See you back here tomorrow!

Meet Yahya Jan: The Architect Behind Dubai's Ciel Tower, the World's Tallest Hotel
Tumblr media
Gazing at the Dubai skyline, you’re likely admiring the work of Yahya Jan, president and design director of the architecture and engineering firm NORR. His portfolio includes notable landmarks like the Atlantis and Shangri-La Hotels.
Jan's latest endeavor is his most ambitious yet. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, the Ciel Dubai Marina, also known as Ciel Tower, will feature over 1,000 rooms and suites across 82 floors. Standing approximately 1,200 feet (365 meters) tall, it is poised to become the world’s tallest hotel.
A Passion Project
Jan was challenged to design the skyscraper on a triangular plot at Dubai Marina, spanning just 2,500 square meters—remarkably small for such a tall building. “It’s a property that’s very compressed,” he told CNN in 2021. “The constraints were tremendous, and yet we had to make it work.”
A rendering of Ciel Tower at night. Courtesy of NORR The design includes a glass observation deck offering 360-degree views of the city, the coastline, and iconic landmarks like the Palm Jumeirah. Visitors will also enjoy a rooftop swimming pool and restaurants.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the project is energy efficient, using 25% less power for air conditioning compared to similar buildings. “This project is not just about architecture. It’s about architecture and engineering coming together,” Jan said. “That’s why I love the project so much. It is my passion, the convergence of science and art.”
Throughout the construction, Jan has remained deeply involved. “When you design a project as complex as the Ciel, you can never let your guard down, you can never say it’s over,” he stated. “It’s a continuous process.”
An Extended Stay
Arriving in Dubai in 1996, Jan never envisioned leaving such a legacy, having designed many of the city’s iconic office developments, residential towers, and malls.
Jan, who grew up in Karachi, Pakistan, moved to the US at 18 on a scholarship. After studying structural engineering at Princeton, he earned a Master’s in architecture. He worked in the US for nine years before a job offer to design the Emirates Towers office and hotel complex brought him to Dubai.
Now 61, Jan has spent 28 years in Dubai, despite not planning to stay so long. “I got carried away with the excitement here,” he said.
Regarding Ciel Tower, named after the French word for sky, Jan hopes it will achieve timeless status, akin to New York City’s Empire State Building or Chrysler Building. “The reason I like the name Ciel is because in our own lives, the sky is the limit,” he said. “I’ve had a chance to grow and do things I didn’t think I would get a chance to do. It’s been amazing.”

Feather nRF52840 Sense is born anew! 🎉🔧🪶
Like the CLUE board, another one of the boards that has been out of stock for a looooooong time is the Feather nRF52840 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4516) - so many of the components got discontinued or were unavailable on this board it took till now to get enough parts to put it back in stock! The biggest one is the LSM6DS33 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4480) is discontinued, so we replaced it with the LSM6DS3TRC (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4503) - the tester code required some updating so we also swapped it from using a Teensy 3.6, now entirely discontinued, to our Pico Brains. The complete program and test take about 30 seconds. We're excited to restock this prodigal board!

Watering the Hills: Bamboo's Role in Northeast Indian Agriculture.
Bamboo Pipes!
If you have spent some time in the hilly areas of North-East India, you might have stumbled upon an engineering marvel—crafted entirely from bamboo. This isn't just any setup; it's a bamboo drip irrigation system.
The bamboo drip irrigation system is based on gravity and the steep slopes facilitate in implementing it. Water from an uphill source is tapped and brought to the plantation by a main bamboo channel. Usually these water sources are far off from the plantations and the main bamboo channel runs hundreds of meters — in some cases even few kilometers.
Sometimes water is diverted to distant houses for domestic use.
If you know of any such examples of communities using locally available resources to address local challenges, tell us below.
