Netflix released, well, not a ton but some data about viewership recently and I couldn't help but look up the performance of my fandoms. They released the top 18,214 titles based on hours watched from Jan to June 2023.
Ordered in terms of rank.
ATLA: Avatar the Last Airbender (Not available globally - what countries are missing? IDK)
Woot woot! Avatar in the house. 45.5M hours for book 1, giving it a rank of 342.
Book 3 has more views than book 2. I'm gonna credit that to Zuko.
Teen Wolf (Not available globally - what countries are missing? IDK)
The top season is season 3, oddly enough, with a rank of 361! It got 43.9M hours streamed. What are you all rewatching?
Season 1 is the third most watched.
Jurassic World (Not available globally - what countries are missing? IDK)
A healthy rank of 536 with 34M views.
Yu-Gi-Oh (Not available in the US)
Season one is ranked 1,843, with 11.4M hours watched in the first half of the year. Wow! That's impressive for such an old show.
Only 54% of people moved on to the second season. Sad😢
Season 5 had more views than Season 4 or 3. Stop torturing yourselves with rewatching the ceremonial duel, y'all. It's not healthy.
Carmen SanDiego
Season one saw 5.9M hours watched, giving it a rank of 3,133! Not bad for a show from 2019. (How does YGO out rank this? And how is this show more popular than She-Ra? She-Ra is better imo)
I'm impressed the Steal or Not to Steal interactive story did as well as it did. (1.3M hours). But I also know there were some good JuliaxCarmen scenes that 100% inspired fics.
She-Ra (available globally)
Season 1 is ranked 3,213 with 5.7M hours viewed.
People then went on to watch Seasons 5 and 4. We're all rewatching the angst bits, aren't we? Or maybe it's the redemption arc.
Least watched season? 3.
Voltron
Season one is ranked 4,140 with 3.9M hours watched.
Why is season 2 the only one not available globally? Odd. 62% of people go on to watch it after season 1 anyway.
Season 8 is not the least watched season, season 5 is. However, season 5 is totally the one I rewatched twice when it first came out.
Fullmetal Alchemist (movies are global, anime are not)
It is an absolute crime nothing here is ranked high. The highest is the movie, The Revenge of Scar, with a rank of 5,666. 2.2M hours watched.
Only season 1 for both the 03 anime and Brotherhood is available, but the 03 anime is winning. It had an extra 200K hours viewed.
All of the movies had a higher hour watch count than any of the anime seasons.
BBC Merlin | Doctor Who (no data)

I live on Ao3. I always leave kudos and 99% of the time i leave a comment.
I bookmark most of the fics i read so i can find them again easily when i want to reread them. Which happens. A lot.
I don’t re-read books but i reread fanfica all the time.
If you enjoyed a fic, you should definitely let the author know.
(I'm a writer and i love to know people enjoyed my words and my stories)
I’ve seen five different authors take down, or prepare to take down, their posted works on Ao3 this week.  At the same time, I’ve seen several people wishing there was more new content to read.  I’ve also seen countless posts by authors begging for people to leave comments and kudos.
People tell me I am a big name fan in my chosen fandom.  I don’t quite get that but for the purposes of this post, let’s roll with it.  On my latest one shot, less than 18% of the people who read it bothered to hit the kudos button.  Sure, okay, maybe that one sort of sucked.  Let’s look at the one shot posted before that - less than 16% left kudos.  Before that - 10%, and then 16%.  I’m not even going to get into the comments.  Let’s just say the numbers drop a lot.  I’m just looking at one shots here so we don’t have to worry about multiple hits from multiple chapters, people reading previous chapters over, etc.  And if I am a BNF, that means other people are getting significantly less kudos and comments.
Fandom is withering away because it feels like people don’t care about the works that are posted.  Why should I go to the trouble of posting my stories if no one reads them, and of the people who do read them, less than a fifth like them?  Even if you are not a huge fan of the story, if it kept your attention long enough for you to get to the bottom, go ahead and mash that kudos button.  It’s a drop of encouragement in a big desert.
TL;DR: Passively devouring content is killing fandom.

As cameras becomes more normalized (Sarah Bernhardt encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use cameras because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by manufacturing companies. I paint not because I want a painting but because I love the process of painting. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.
if i have to explain to you that using a camera to take a picture is not the same as using generative ai to generate an image then you are a fucking moron.
#ask me#anon#no more patience for this#i've heard this for the past 2 years#“an object created and controlled by companies” anon the company cannot barge into your home and take your camera away#or randomly change how it works on a whim. you OWN the camera that's the whole POINT#the entire point of a camera is that i can control it and my body to produce art. photography is one of the most PHYSICAL forms of artmakin#you have to communicate with your space and subjects and be conscious of your position in a physical world.#that's what makes a camera a tool. generative ai (if used wholesale) is not a tool because it's not an implement that helps you#do a task. it just does the task for you. you wouldn't call a microwave a “tool”#but most importantly a camera captures a REPRESENTATION of reality. it captures a specific irreproducible moment and all its data#read Roland Barthes: Studium & Punctum#generative ai creates an algorithmic IMITATION of reality. it isn't truth. it's the average of truths.#while conceptually that's interesting (if we wanna get into media theory) but that alone should tell you why a camera and ai aren't the sam#ai is incomparable to all previous mediums of art because no medium has ever solely relied on generative automation for its creation#no medium of art has also been so thoroughly constructed to be merged into online digital surveillance capitalism#so reliant on the collection and commodification of personal information for production#if you think using a camera is “automation” you have worms in your brain and you need to see a doctor#if you continue to deny that ai is an apparatus of tech capitalism and is being weaponized against you the consumer you're delusional#the fact that SO many tumblr lefists are ready to defend ai while talking about smashing the surveillance state is baffling to me#and their defense is always “well i don't engage in systems that would make me vulnerable to ai so if you own an apple phone that's on you”#you aren't a communist you're just self-centered

I think at this point, No matter which platform you go to, you can't escape. Do you think they hire hundreds of programmers and set up hundreds of servers just to provide free services?
Nope! Twitter/X is not the product; the users themselves are the product

For anyone whose Netflix region won't have Karakasa...
How to watch Netflix from other countries in 2024
The gist of the article is that you can use a VPN to access foreign Netflix. This site recommends NordVPN, Surfshark, and Express VPN (I use this one, though I've never tried it with Netflix).

The thing is. Representation in media did change things. I grew up in the 90s and 2000s, where the only place you could see shows or movies with queer people was on Cable television on the gay channel or the sex-allowed channel. There was The L Word, and Queer as Folk, and those weren't on the main channels. On the main channels, shows were still getting told they couldn't show a clearly queer character (Xena, The Next Generation, DS9 had to fight to get the 1 queer kiss, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to fight to eventually get to show Willow and Tara kiss). Then of course there was the majority of characters being men in TV shows, and characters being white. But I'm going to focus on the queer rep thing because that's what I can for sure say has changed a lot.
By the time we get to 2010s, it was actually NORMAL enough for queer people to be in shows on mainstream channels that I could actually choose to ONLY watch shows with a queer character. And most straight people probably watched at least 1 show with a queer character. And that normalized seeing queer people for them. It made straight people start caring LESS if they saw a queer person on TV. Yes, people still probably wrote into shows and said "you better not show this!" but shows knew it was not going to kill their profits to just show queer people, so they didn't cancel shows over having a queer character or SHOWING some queer person kissing someone. (Showing interracial relationships was also a steady thing like this... Sonic 2 has a black woman and a white man together in a HUGE mainstream movie for kids! Fallout show has a black woman and a white man married as one of the main relationships! There was a time when your show got cancelled if you even tried to show a black person and white person kissing. Representing stuff shifts what society views as 'normal' and tolerates. Show enough interracial couples in media, and the main bulk of society stops caring enough to fight to get something cancelled by avoiding it, stops caring enough about avoiding it to care that it exists and fight it's existence).
We get to now. Now a straight person can watch a show like Interview with the Vampire, or Arcane, and the fact there are queer main characters are NOT something you even need to warn the straight person about. The straight person may seek out those shows ON their own, like them for their own merit as a show (or not like them on that merit), and that's it. No more concern that just including a queer person will drive the average straight person to avoid your show, or that it will be such a high risk the channel will want to prevent the queer character existing. (Except hey for stuff like Disney which... still overwhelmingly seems frightened...) I'm just saying. We came SO far in 30 years. In the beginning shows fought to show whatever little they were able (and most shows avoided showing queer people altogether for fear of the risk). And now it is such a SMALL risk that shows expect the average straight audience member to not care if they see a queer person. That's a huge difference tbh. When I was a teenager I feared just being OUT might expose me to most adults attacking me verbally, or more. Now as a queer adult, I expect most Average straight people to not care about my sexuality or at least not verbally (or physically) attack me for it if I'm just mentioning who I dated once/that I went to pride/that I'm bi. That is a huge difference after years of normalization. Yes, there's still jerks who will attack me, but its such a shift that I don't automatically have to assume every straight person by default will likely attack me - I can actually assume some won't! Nothing changed in their lives, in the past 30 years a lot of them didn't make more queer friends or anything. But they just don't care as much that some person different than them... exists.
We are to the point where a straight person, who is not queer and doesn't know queer people, may actually choose to watch Young Royals or Heartstopper or Red White and Royal Blue JUST because they like teen drama, or romance genre stuff. That's a huge fucking shift from the days when straight people would not even run into queer content unless they specifically got cable, and sought out the very rare channel that showed mostly queer content. There's way more 'stuff for average audiences' now that includes queer people, and more 'stuff for queer people that's also X genre' that average straight audiences actually are willing to check out because they like X genre and seeing queer people is not an immediate reason to avoid the media for them.

Note to self: word prayers better when doing divinatory sessions
I think I've mentioned this before, but I do yes/no stone pulls on Sundays to ask for guidance about maintaining my health re: my commute because it's 2-2.5 hours each way via public transit if everything runs on time. It's rough on me in multiple ways and can lead to even more migraines than usual or being too fatigued to work at all, and it can be difficult to tell whether I'll have the spoons to go in person.
This past Sunday I was exhausted & stressed because of, you know, the horrors, and said my initial prayer a little differently than I usually do. I still invoked Apollo and Hermes as always, as both of them cover divination by lots, Apollo's domain covers health & disease, and he's the one I turn to for divination by default.
Now, the vast majority of the guidance and lessons Apollo has given have had to do with recognizing my physical & mental limits, especially around this issue. The answers I was getting this time around were...odd but not quite in the way they have been with just dud pulls, so I started asking clarifying questions to figure out what was going on. After a few - establishing that there was a reason for the answers but it wasn't a test or punishment or Apollo messing with me (which would have been. odd) - I realized that while I'd invoked Hermes as a god of divination by lots alongside Apollo, I had not explicitly asked him to act as a messenger and aid in communication this time around, nor had I asked Apollo to guide the divination session with the wording I usually use.
I think you can see where I'm going with this.
I re-said the prayer (correctly this time) and confirmed that it was, in fact, Hermes at first while re-doing the initial set of questions (which were much more consistent in the usual way), as well as confirming that the issue was the prayer wording. Lesson learned lol
#full transparency: shortly after the initial set of re-do questions i had a panic attack/meltdown (b/c of. again. the Horrors)#that was made worse by the third part of the session (some questions i thought to ask after the re-dos) being a dud#i did another pull wednesday morning after i had had a couple days to recover & the biggest stressor was over with#& i felt ready to re-engage with it#(& also knew that not clarifying the last part of the pull would make the Everything worse)#and i asked about each section (hermes -> commute question re-do -> the Bad Times questions)#and got *another* confirmation that it was actually hermes at first & that the middle section was accurate and (thankfully) that#the last one was not#i check my work *thoroughly* b/c tangible external things like divination are the most reliable things i have#b/c i cant always trust internal cues#coriander says#helpol#apollo#apollon#hermes#hellenic pagan#hellenic polytheism#hellenic community#divination#also! to be clear! ymmv when worshipping/working with/etc. deities#just b/c this was my experience doesnt mean this will be your experience!#also also. i personally dont believe all of the gods might do the sort of thing hermes did. he's a trickster god#which is why the possibility that it was him was on my radar in the first place#apollo doesnt have trickster aspects afaik (i could be wrong!) so it seemed off. and hermes wasnt. like. *impersonating* apollo#i didnt ask explicitly who it was at first b/c that's not a necessary part of my process- you dont *need* to clarify by default in helpol#& now that i know why it happened i can avoid the situation in the future & have a data point to compare to in case it *does* happen again

some of you are so lost in the ai panic that you've lost sight of reasoning in favor of destroying a perceived threat that you are the ones actively making the art scene worse for artists. the amount of artists ive seen harassed because a stranger "clocked" their works as ai even when theyve had the same style for years beforehand or at least a very traceable pattern of progression and the amount of artists ive seen deterred from creating something for fear of it being too close to an ai-like art concept that they end up harassed about it is unforgivable. you cannot be claiming you are anti ai art for its impact on artists & their job prospects and then turn around and destroy the very community you claim to care for. some of you are just excited to have an "acceptable" outlet to be mean and it shows
