going on a roadtrip would fix me
#the endless highways. the blue skies. the sticky humid heat when u open the door to run to the rest stop. shitty coffees and melting ice#cream. sunscreen hastily applied on ur arms and legs. stopping by the road to take pictures. that flat expanse of land and the mix of sweet#smelling forest and the burbling of the creeks and rivers and the lake like a pearl....

I’m kind of baffled about the state of dawntrail discussions having two parties in regards to Living Memory, one being “shutting it down is amoral” and the other being “it’s moral and not at all like what Emet-Selch wanted to do with us”. It’s like a lot of people refuse to engage with the narrative from any other perspective other than their own when the game essentially hits you over the head with the message.
Yes, the existence of Living Memory is unsutainable and amoral and, frankly, pointless – you can make the very valid argument that the people there were just AI chatbots trained on the memories of a given individual, leeching off of the souls of others, their existence demanding the genocide of the entire universe in the end. I agree, in our eyes, Living Memory is an affront to life, sure!
Nobody seems to talk about that this is the exact same perspective Emet-Selch had about us, or when mentioned, people say that it isn’t the same. It is? He very explicitly tells us that the people living on the shards today are pale imitations to what he considered to be life, and thus shutting it down and trying to undo his mistake IS the solution (he is very much like Solas from DA in this regard), because in his eyes there’s nothing to lose but everything to gain. Emet-Selch saw us in the same light we see the people of Living Memory, and the game is painfully unsubtle in drawing this parallel. Even with the differences (we are not recreated memories but actual souls being reborn from the aetherial sea, etc-etc), the game WANTS you to make this connection between Emet and what we do. It is quite literally the point!
Yes, Living Memory has to be shut down because its biggest drawback is that it’s unsustainable and would continue to destroy what we deem to be lives. It is also arguably an affront to what we consider life and its natural end (directly opposing the message of Endwalker). The Endless aren’t even too hung up about this shutdown, bar Sphene. Shutting down Living Memory is necessary.
But you can’t say it was morally good and unquestionable if you can’t give Emet’s views the same grace. In the end, both his plans (and the Ascians at large, frankly) and Living Memory had to be stopped because that means survival for us, but to divorce the two narratives to maintain the WoL and co.’s moral superiority is disingenuous and does the story a disservice.
#and frankly divorcing the two schools of thought is also incredibly boring. the expansion talks about so many things (some topics done#better than others) but I never would have guessed that people would be so willing to miss the literal point of the comparison that crops u#yes there are differences but the main point is that if you don't see the Endless as living then you have to understand why Emet didn't see#us as living and if you do see them as living beings then you have to wrestle with essentially genociding them. you not seeing them as#living beings is the exact same thought process Emet utilised. IT IS THE POINT!#anyway I agree that the Endless had to end but my god the surrounding discussions drive me up the wall#(this is the Solas-Veil conversation all over again where both vocal sides miss crucial points)#ANYWAY#dawntrail spoilers#dt spoilers#dawntrail#ffxiv#had to get this out of my system#I'm travelling for work and yet my thoughts are consumed by the discourse

i dont know what assumptions are running rife abt certain animal species but my default response to things like "bees can do maths?!" or "do earthworms feel grief?" or "can ants tell time?" is simply that all creatures absolutely Know Things so if u were to tell me that like....idk sea cucumbers can do calculus i would 1000% accept this bc clearly why WOULDN'T they?
#idk if sea cucumbers can do calculus but if not im fairly certain other species can like...easily#the vast unknowability of other creatures cognition....the expanse of their perceptions which are miles from ours & the endless potential#of what experiencing the world through that perception must be like........astonishing stuff!!!#idir lúibíní#p

i played the remastered alan wake a while back and am replaying the original on steam, and, honestly, they’re so similar, I couldn’t tell which is which if you held up comparisons. ive come across reviews about the game looking outdated and bad (mostly compared to other releases in that time), but the original looks great and I like the hazy dark lighting for both this and awan
#might delete#I can’t wait to run into all the product placements#like yeah I know it’s not. top graphics of that year. but I’ve stopped and looked at the environment So many times. it’s pretty!#this is because im biased but I *loved* AWANs choice of scenery. although I wish it was as detailed and expansive as the original games#all of remedy’s games do pretty great in terms of the environment. ignore controls terrible map and the Oldest House is an incredible space#to navigate just by following signs and all the little details. the atmosphere!#don’t even need to explain how aw2 is good with that#but even Max Payne 1 has this beautiful eerie quality where everything is this fever dream of grungy or old environments#even before the literal nightmare sequence it felt like navigating a dream of this Not New York City. like of course it’s likely born from#the limitations the developers had when making it. but the emptiness and placement of npcs added to the experience#QB so far is my least favorite in its style and environment but it’s still had some good moments. the use of flashbacks + time overlapping#onto abandoned and destroyed environments was genius. the college campus itself and the train(?) cargo(?) area was neat to go through#there’s some really good stuff there! *im also. not done with QB so im still hoping things get more wild!!#im honestly more forgiving of QB as a whole and find it interesting since it went through a lot of hell in its development#this might seem negative but it’s not! it’s a shockingly beautiful game. graphics exceed expectations#the style and some locations is where it’s more boring for me. but still good. im so tempted to buy it on steam to finally finish it#endless apologies if u opened this and ur entire page opened up an essays worth of tags

listen, listen
I know this is gonna be a controversial take, but the more I think about it, the more obsessed I am with the idea of Varric voluntarily helping The Crimson Knight (especially in a worldstate where Hawke was left in the Fade).
I’ve talked before about how I view Meredith as the type of person who is motivated by her desire to protect her own at all costs, and how this leads her down the path of Well-Intentioned Extremism, and culminating in becoming the embodiment of the uh, Knight Templar trope.
And Varric is obviously motivated by his motivation to protect Hawke: he shielded them from the Inquisition, and when push came to shove and he was forced to expose Hawke to the Inquisition anyway, it can result in Hawke’s death. The Inquisition fails Hawke, who is basically Varric’s moral compass — without Hawke’s influence, he defaults to siding with the templars at the end of DA2.
Most of the Inquisitor’s inner circle scatters over Thedas and Varric returns to Kirkwall. Varric loves Kirkwall; he’s a Kirkwaller through and through: even though he’s never envisioned nor wanted a life of politics, he becomes the fucking viscount, because there’s nobody else left who wants one drop of the poisoned chalice of that role.
And Kirkwall is a city that has always been dependent on its templars for protection. They are the city’s military force, and the city is noticeably weaker once the templars abandon it — depending on world state, it can lose a significant portion of its territory to one of Varric’s former companions. If someone he knew and trusted can do that to Kirkwall, who else might take advantage of Kirkwall in its weakened state?
Varric is isolated and alone, away from anyone who might be able to help him see the situation in a different light: his main support network is Aveline and Seneschal Bran, neither of whom are known for their ardent support of mage rights. They’re doing their best to clear Kirkwall of the impacts of the war, of the red lyrium, and even though they’re doing their best to avoid exposure, being around that much red lyrium cannot be healthy. Slowly, the paranoia and increased penchant for violence settle in. It becomes impossible to resist spending more time around the substance — and sometimes, it talks! And it sounds like Meredith Stannard.
Varric is desperate and scared and has lost everyone he has ever loved. The Inquisition has been downsized or disbanded, and his only purpose is to serve his city: the same intention with which Meredith started, the same intention and fears that the red lyrium feeds upon in them both.
Varric fears becoming his parents: people who failed to protect him because they were too caught up in their past mistakes.
But sometimes, as people, in our attempts to avoid our fears, we end up barreling into them headfirst instead.
#do i actually think bioware is gonna give us a varric tethras corruption arc? no#but the narrative parallels are there and i just think they’re neat!#and like i never expected in my wildest dreams that meredith stannard would have actual plot relevance in 2022 so!!#and back when dragon age exodus the da2 expansion was still being considered#varric was meant to die at the end 🤔🤔🤔#tbh i don’t expect this to crop up in da:d bc there is SO much to cover and doing the writing for a world state with alive pro-mage hawke#would be tricky#but that’s why we have fanfiction#bless transformative fiction for letting us explore endless possibilities outside of the limitations of commercial interests!!#also emo about how both varric and meredith carry so much GRIEF about their families#and grief can cause people to do dangerous things#and when that’s coupled with positions of power …!#this is also tangentially a meta about the intersection of trauma and how power corrupts#thedas is not an environment conducive to healing lol#anyway i will continue to spin these thoughts around like a plate in a microwave#da absolution spoilers#dragon age#meredith stannard#knight commander meredith#varric tethras#dragon age meta#asha meta#asha’s villain manifesto#also warning that the trope links lead to tv tropes lol#bc I’m tired of people acting like fictional characters (vehicles for a narrative) are real people (capable of causing real world harm)

The good news: The Quorum finally trusts Colonial Fleet enough that we get access to nukes
The bad news: the Cylons did not appreciate this development so they're gonna start using nukes now
#bsg deadlock#Battlestar Galactica Deadlock#at least they warned us but maybe we should stop escalating the situation so much friends#i feel like jf we keep this going then one day they might carry out a simultaneous nuclear carpet bombing on the twelve colonies#and then chase a fleet of desperate survivors through the endless expanse of space#but it might just be me being paranoid and it'll actually all work out in the end and we'll live in peace
