@saiikavon asked a very good world-building question (or pointed it out), about something that happened in the history of my What Happens In Vegas world. While I don’t know EVERYTHING about this world yet (though I could easily BS it because that’s how I roll), I do know this answer. 

I mentioned before that there was a pandemic, and that mostly Omegas suffered from it. Hence low populations, and now really shitty laws. I’m going to explain that a little more since it actually doesn’t have anything to do with the story itself, but is part of the reason why the environment in the story exists at all.

This gets quite long. Sorry mobile users.

The pandemic (I used epidemic before, but pandemics are world-wide and that’s what happened here) they refer to was nicknamed Omega Flu. The idea was more in line with the Spanish Flu than Swine Flu, SARS, or West Nile.

Spanish flu, which happened 100 years ago now, was bad to say the least. About 1/3 of the world’s population at the time was infected with it (estimated around 500 million infected). Out of that, more than 2.5% died. That death rate is actually terrifying since most flus have a less than 0.1% death rate. (To put it in perspective, that’s roughly 12,500,000 people if I did the math right).

So yeah, it was bad, and for whatever reason, it most impacted Omegas (dynamics used to be split about 1/3 evenly so you can see where I’m going with that based on what I said above), though there were others too. It’s death rate was terrifying, and many of the survivors that were infected became infertile. This lead to both a high loss of Omegas, and also eliminated the possibility for many of them to be able to produce children. Some Betas can carry children too (they have to be tested to see if they can since they don’t go into heats or anything like Omegas do), though it’s always hard on their bodies, and hard on the children too. High death or birth defect rates.  It’s why Omegas are SO coveted in this messed up world, and why many Betas are super overlooked.

Laws aren’t usually slapped down overnight. Not extreme ones like this. They needed to get some scientific facts behind it. So, the pandemic happened roughly about 30 years before the start of this story. Lotor said it was his 27th birthday, and he was born towards the tail end of it all since there were medications to try and stop it at that point, but some people were still infected. (There’s a reason Lotor’s an only child, something that’s very rare for a combination of Alpha and Omega parents). The laws were put in place roughly around the time Keith was born.

At the time, Omega rights weren’t…terrible. They could be better, but not bad. They had more options for school and work, though they still couldn’t really do either of those when pregnant or when their kids were young. Of course there were ways around that, family businesses, working with their Alpha/Beta partners, etc (some of these loopholes still exist and are taken advantage of…thanks to Fairia ( @aknazer ) who presented me with the idea that Lance, Keith, Pidge, Hunk, etc could work together to take advantage of that when we were talking and brainstorming).

Anyway, at the time, a lot of Omegas were choosing to wait to have families, or weren’t having huge ones.

So the factors so far: huge percentage of Omegas world-wide were lost, and many others were rendered infertile (look I’m trying to think of one of the nastiest bugs I can to explain why it’s so bad). On top of that, birth rates were already slowing down some because kids are expensive little demons (I’m a teacher, I love kids, but they also asked me if they could bring an ouija board to class to play with so I have a right to call them demons okay. I never thought I’d utter ‘we are not opening up a portal to hell in my classroom’ when I became a teacher but here we are).

Some countries had it better off. This fictionalized version of the United States got hit hard, and that may or may not be slight a jab at the state of medical care/insurance from an outside source. I’m Canadian and you can wrestle my universal medicare out of my cold, dead, but freely hospitalized hands.

Of course, other countries with similar medicare systems weren’t hit as hard, but to have such dramatic laws, you need to have a dramatic reason they exist.

Also, old, rich, white, Alpha men. That too. If Lotor using slurs to describe Lance wasn’t enough to show that racism still exists here, let me say that yeah, it still exists, because sometimes people suck.

Anyway.

Many countries world-wide went into a bit of a panic over this, because populations dropped drastically and alarmingly. So, in the US (and many other places) the Omega Laws came into play, which is the world you see Keith living in now.

So Keith’s generation is the first one to grow up in a world like this, which is why there’s still so much commentary on it. The generation (you know what I mean when I say this) before saw it as a necessity, as something to survive. Now, other younger people are wondering if there was a better way to do it after growing up in that world.

So still new enough to comment on, but old enough where that the people graduating don’t know a time where things weren’t like they are now.

This is why someone like Krolia, who is an Omega, was able to work for the FBI, whereas now Pidge (also an Omega), who would be someone that would have been recruited out of high school nearly 30 years ago in this world, is overlooked. Of course, governments have a way of working around this too, under the table stuff.

Krolia left the FBI when she met Keith’s dad, wanting to stay with him because she loved him, but also taking the proximity to keep an eye on Daizabaal Industries. That’s important. She wasn’t kicked out because of some laws, or even because she was pregnant at the time and had to. She CHOSE to leave, because at the time, she had choices. Keith and Acxa came very quickly after that.

It also makes a ton of sense why the FBI, when trying to track down and break an Omega trafficking ring, would want Omegas on the team. If they found victims, they would absolutely be more comfortable with other Omegas compared to any others (and you can bet there would be more Alphas than Betas in field positions in the FBI based on personalities alone).

So now you know how Krolia could work for the FBI, what happened to decease the population of Omegas so badly, and why the laws are absolute shit for them.
