Agustín Madrigal As a Villain
Tumblr media
I was inspired by the song Melodic Massacre by Lydia the Bard and I draw Agustín as a villain in the other universe and tormented Alma for being harsh on the family before the house falls down

Villain!Leandra AU
Tumblr media
What level of fandom is it when you start making AU’s of your AU’s? I mentioned that if the kids didn’t come along in Love and Fury-verse, the pressure of being Bruno’s sole lifeline while half the village sings songs about how evil he is would have eventually led to Leandra becoming very bitter and possibly a villain. So! Encanto if Bruno was married to a villainess (sort of, tried to keep the conflict as grounded and complex as it is in canon).
The AU's branch off from at Leandra's Labrynth, or whatever I called that fic. To sum up that story, Leandra is head over heels for Bruno and happy to take on half his burdens if it means being with him. He worries his burdens are too burdensome and will eventually strain their marriage. He starts waiting for the other shoe to drop.
It does not drop. Leandra loves him, and although being married to him isn’t always easy, she feels lucky to be the person that faces his challenges with him. Of course she does, he’s witty and handsome and treats her well.
So his anxiety keeps spiraling, he starts trying to earn love he already has. He keeps trying to take over her chores, he keeps buying her nice gifts she doesn’t need, it affects their sex life, it's very overwhelming to be on the receiving end. Leandra is the sort of person who goes a bit stir crazy without a project so the whole No Chores thing is not good for her. In the main version the kids come along and not only does this help anchor Bruno to the family, having the common goal of Raise Children puts Leandra back in the partner category for him. Without the kids, Leandra stays firmly planted in the inexplicably-loving-wife-who-I-can’t-lose-or-I’ll-be-completely-alone category no matter how many times her and Bruno try to talk it out.
Leandra, for her part, starts feeling sort of useless. She doesn’t know what’s wrong, she doesn’t know why she can’t make Bruno happy. He says the fact that she does make him happy is the problem, but that implies that his baseline is not happy and that’s worse (“You get how that’s worse, right Bruno?”). She slowly gives up fighting the gifts, and the pampering, because the fights themselves only serve to make Bruno more anxious. She tells herself these are temporary concessions, when she figures out how to reassure Bruno once and for all that she'll never leave him, she can then remind him she's his partner. Now she's looking for the source of his unhappiness, and because she doesn’t know what mental illness is, she concludes Bruno’s two problems are the village and his gift. She throws herself even harder into trying to get people to see how wonderful Bruno is, even though she’s sometimes in tears at night because “Why are they so stupid?! What is wrong with those people?!”
So, for a couple of years, Bruno and Leandra are caught in a vicious cycle. He’s aware that without her he’d be completely isolated, and her helping him maintain relationships with others just reaffirms that. He’s overly-protective/affectionate, she understands it’s coming from a place of fear so she tries to assuage his fear, this confirms to him he needs her and he continues to be overly protective/affectionate.
On the outside, the family doesn’t fully register the fact that Leandra is drowning. They see her volunteer to watch the kids so Bruno can have some time with his sisters, they see her arrange for weekly story time with the rest of the village so that only half the village is afraid of Bruno, they see her staunchly defend Bruno's reputation, and they see Bruno treat her like a queen. From the outside the marriage looks very healthy. It’s a little awkward, sure, that Bruno won’t let Leandra do any chores and that he freaks out if she gets a cold, but he’s always been a weird guy so as long as this works for them, no judgement. (This is not working for them).
The breaking point comes when Mirabel doesn’t get her gift and Bruno has that vision.
Like in canon, Bruno smashes the vision and tries to go into hiding. Like in the main AU, Leandra lies to protect Mirabel.
But now Bruno is in this weird in between that he isn’t in either canon or my original AU. He’s still connected to the family/miracle because he still has a loving wife who knows he’s in the walls and keeps bringing him food, but he’s not doing any visions anymore because “my gift wasn’t helping the family”. The visions start piling up, the future trying to break through and he is stubbornly trying to hold it back.
Outside the walls, Leandra has told Alma the truth, “Bruno is convinced his gift is hurting the family and now he’s hiding and trying to refuse his visions so he doesn’t hurt anyone any more and they're making him sick and I'm scared and I love him and I don't know what to do.”
To which Alma doesn’t know how to react. She also low key believes Bruno’s gift was hurting the family, but she didn’t realize Bruno felt that way too. And she had forgotten that he loved the family enough to do something as self destructive as this. She has Leandra bring Bruno messages, trying to convince him that it’s ok, he can come out of hiding, he does not have to give visions anymore. She and Bruno become weird sort of pen pals because they’re arguing back and forth on whether he can live in society without hurting his family. This strengthens their relationship, which strengthens Bruno’s connection to the miracle, which strengthens the visions.
A year after Mirabel’s gift ceremony, the visions break through, they start flowing through him and they don’t stop.
Leandra finds him, incoherent on his hammock, eyes glowing. She drags him out of the walls, into his bed, and gets Julieta to look at him. She can’t stop the visions. Nothing stops the visions. Bruno is stuck like this.
This breaks both Alma and Leandra.
From this point on they’re foils and low key in conflict. Alma blames herself for what’s happened to Bruno, and thinks the miracle can save him, she takes a step back from her role as family matriarch to start studying the miracle.
Leandra’s bitterness at the village means she continues to blame them for Bruno’s problems, them, and the miracle. She thinks if she can put out the candle she can save Bruno, and if the rest of the village hates her for it, well fuck ‘em. So whenever Alma is by Bruno’s side, Leandra studies the miracle as well, only she's trying to figure out how to kill the miracle once and for all.
Bruno is, thankfully, not in a lot of pain. The visions flow through him almost easily, and as long as he doesn't fight it, he spends the nine whole years this is happening not having any migraines. He is effectively blind, sometimes deaf if the visions have sound, and sometimes he doesn't even register the present at all. He gets exhausted seemingly randomly, some visions take more out of him than others and there's no way to predict (pun unintended) which ones. Leandra helps him train his rats and her dog to effectively be service animals for what is essentially a magic chronic illness. On good days he can wander around his room without any help other than his seeing eye posse of animals, when he does he leaves a trail of vision tablets in the sand. Leandra will find them, record them in a secret journal, then smash them so nobody benefits from her husband's illness. On medium days he'll sit in his old story telling tent and tell Mirabel and Antonio about any interesting visions that pass by his sight. On bad days he stays in bed, Leandra, Alma, or one of his sisters holding his hand, even though he has no idea they're there.
Ironically, he's closer to his family than he has been in years, which unfortunately keeps the visions flowing. Bright side, he’s finally convinced that nothing will scare his wife away.
The status quo for the rest of the family is that they're a little more fragmented than in canon. Bruno didn't disappear, his gift is making him sick, sometimes they can go talk to him, but sometimes they'll visit him and he'll be completely out of it. This shakes everybody up a bit. The miracle isn't supposed to hurt them. They know Alma is trying to figure out how to fix it so the unspoken rule is not to disturb her and if she asks you to help her with some sort of experiment, drop everything to do it. Pepa's gift is more volatile because instead of telling herself she's angry at her brother for the wedding thing and sweeping all other emotions under the rug, she's stuck watching him suffer, so the family gets used to not bringing her any of their problems. Julieta is now splitting her time between being the village healer and helping Leandra care for Bruno, so everybody agrees she's too busy to be bothered with your thoughts or problems. Isabela and Camilo end up the faces of the familia Madrigal, so they're also probably too busy keeping the villagers calm to bother. Luisa is always busy with chores, Dolores is always trying to block out the sounds of her mother, aunts, or grandmother crying over Bruno, so on and so forth, until the only people who consistently sit through the entire "family dinner" everyday are Félix, Antonio, Agustín, and Mirabel.
Casita seems to shrink over the years, and lose most of its color, while all of the doors other than the nursery recede back the way Bruno's did in canon. There are no communal sitting areas, the dining room is smaller, and Mirabel's quinceñeara is the first time in over a year the whole family (even Tio Bruno) come together.
And that's where the movie would start. But this is already pretty long so Imma stop here.

I Bet All I Have to See this House Collapse
Tumblr media
During my Once Upon a Studio of Wishing Upon a Miracle by Two Cousins, I had so many ideas for the confession of Matre (Agustin's father) before I listened to Lydia the Bard two new songs of When Will My Life Begin (Rapunzel's Villain Song) and Nothing Left to Loose (Mirabel's Second Villain Song and I thought I would try and blending the colours just like the animatic of Mirabel with a hint of purple/blue of Rapunzel. But to be honest, I can't decide which one is better. What do you think?
Tumblr media
Anyway, Marte and Agustin's relationship was a mix of perfect and imperfect until Agustin married to Julieta and his father's hatred for Alma Madrigal was unnoticed by others until the truth came out. He cared about the rest of the family but Matre knew that Alma's grief and her obsession of being perfect was unacceptable to not move on and not being themselves. She might have crossed the line for hurting Isabela and Mirabel. During that song, Agustin couldn't believe that his own father turned out to be a Real Villain of Disney as he was behind of Sakina's father's murder...

Villain Antonio???? Plez???
This is haunting me. It took so long to figure out what his reason would be and I realized if we lean heavily into pre-movie mama Mira headcanon, we really only need to start with a change at one scene.
If You Are Good
Antonio had come out of his room when Hiro told him that he heard Mira and Isabela come back. He had known that Abuela was looking for Mira but he didn't know what she wanted. He did know that Mira was trying to fix things.
All the animals kept talking to him. Telling him everything they knew. From Bruno being in the walls to his mom Pepa and Abuela having fought about what to use his gift for.
He loves his mom! He thinks. It's... Well, it's hard to say. How well can someone love what's essentially a stranger in his house? Antonio knows that's not what they all meant to have done but… the village came first. Abuela’s orders came first.
Except with Mira. He remembers when she'd break the rules and sneak him snacks or bandage his wounds or when she spent the whole day by his side while he was sick. She'd gotten in trouble for not helping pass out things or something.
It was funny. His Mira got in trouble for helping and for not helping.
“The cracks started with you.” He hears from his abeula and he feels cold. He looks down from his spot on the second floor and he doesn't need to see his Mira’s face to know she's hurt. Hiro growls and the others give out chirps and squeaks and more as they get upset on Mira’s behalf.
“Bruno left because of you. Luisa’s losing her powers,” Which isn't true! Bruno chose to leave to protect her! The rats said so. Earlier Dave the donkey said that he agreed with Mira and that Luisa deserved a break.
Barry is the one who comes up with the idea.
“Isabela’s out of control,” Flowers was out of control now? Antonio hears from some of the birds. He kind of agrees. Her having fun was out of line? “Because of you!” There's a bad feeling that feels like it's consuming him. He feels like he's on fire and covered in ice at the same time. Like he's gotten hundreds of paper cuts all at once.
He decides to do what Barry suggests. In a matter of moments, he and the animals are making their way up. Everyone else is focused on Abuela’s yelling at his Mira once again so they don't see him climbing.
“I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift,” Because his Mira, his Mami was perfect already. She was kind and caring. He'd always thought of her as good, as what good was supposed to be. “But it is not an excuse for you to hurt this family!” Now he knows he's the only one to think this way.
The walls are shaking. The animals say it's cause of the cracking.
There's a candle on a plate. It sits atop a windowsill to decide your gift and change your fate. He hears in his head. Something his Mira told him for as long as he could remember. Especially when he was feeling bad or scared. Well, in that impossible scenario, you’d stay here in the nursery with me.
He sees the candle. He doesn't hesitate to grab it.
“Don’t you ever- Antonio?” He turns around, candle in hand. They all start calling out to him but he focuses only on Mira.
And the hurt. The pain and fear, the doneness in her eyes when she first turns around are what does it. Even as it changes to concern and worry for him, he knows it was there.
If being good like the others will make him hurt his Mira for Abuela, if being good is what they are… he doesn't want it. Barry’s right.
If they're gonna call Mirabel bad then he’ll just have to show them what bad truly is.
He blows.
And
Everything
Crumbles.

So any ways I got this idea from Just talking about encanto and possibly characters becoming villains with @toaverse and I had this idea where Isabela was like Tomie from junji ito. Like she completely broke after being stuck perfect and she ends up being more narcissistic and manipulative, especially towards men.
She grows out of her jealousy of Mirabel but is still a bitch. Because she believes she’s much better, I might draw her picture.
Quick author’s note: I am a fan of both Junji ito and encanto, the funny part of this is that I’m not really a fan of Tomie 😂 (no offense to those who are) because she truly is a monster.

Dolores’s Villain Song
Hey friends! So. I did a thing. A thing called I STAYED UP UNTIL FIVE AM AND RECALLED THOSE MEME POSTS BEING ALL LIKE “the kids are the villain in Encanto!” “The trees are the villain in Encanto!” “Encanto is the villain in Encanto!!” and it got me thinking. I then fell asleep and proceeded to have a dream in which Dolores was the villain of Encanto. Yeah yeah I know, MatPat did a theory that some people thought was bonkers ̶b̶u̶t̶ ̶a̶c̶t̶u̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶m̶a̶d̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶l̶o̶t̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶s̶e̶n̶s̶e̶ so yeahhhh. I can’t just let this slide, so here! Have a bogus Encanto AU!
Tumblr media
Basically, the movie, but throughout the film more focus is shown on Dolores’s expressions and stuff. She’s as she usually is, but seems more easily annoyed, and whenever Mariano is brought up she seems to literally despair, but it’s implied Abuela doesn’t want her to be loud and literally just wants her to be the listening ear (you can like see her glaring at Dolores after she spills at the family argument lmao) and then things go to crap. Isabela and Mirabel see Abuela coming near after “What Else Can I Do?” and they rush outside, trying to get away from her, and the family dramatically crowds around the two. Isabela is genuinely terrified of Abuela. Well, everyone goes outside but Dolores, whose gift in this AU is more than just hearing but has to do with absorbing sound waves as a hall..
TRANSCRIPT TIME BABY WHOOOOO! Mirabel’s yelling about how Isa doesn’t wanna marry Mariano and then and then—
~~~~
ABUELA, from outside: But look at Mariano! He’ll be just so perfect for you, Isabela! Perfection or no perfection isn’t he just wonderful?! He loves you, Isabela! Are you seriously going to leave the poor boy on his own?! [Dolores is inside, near the door as she’d tried to head out, but she hears Mariano’s name and flinches, backing away and giving a glimpse to the candle, which is still exceptionally bright from Isabela and Mirabel’s hug. She pulls her hair down from its bun and sneaks from the hall into Isabela’s room. She finds a purple flowery dress and slips behind a flowery changing screen and comes out, spinning, wearing the dress. It doesn’t fit her very well and she itches at it.]
DOLORES in a high voice, mimicking Isabela: Yes, Mariano, aren’t I just beautiful and perfect and graceful? I grow cacti, I grow flowers and.. well, just forget about Dolores. She wishes she were as perfect as me—
[Dolores trips over her feet as she tries to prance and falls face-first into some flowers.] DOLORES: Ugh, ¡¿por qué?!
[She stands and heads outside the hall, itching again at the flowers and grumbling under her breath.]
ISABELA, muffled: But Abuela—
ABUELA: Isabela, please..
[Dolores’s eyes widen, and she seems to crumple in on herself as their words become unintelligible. She rushes to her room and sits on her bed. She starts to cry. The camera moves up to a small photo of her; her room is full of instruments and part-soundproofed areas, but she obviously can’t unhear Abuela still so adamant Isabela should marry Mariano. The photo frame shows her as a young girl next to Abuela during her gift ceremony, but she looks worried as her hand presses to her ear. A flashback sequence starts, showing a younger Dolores at the dinner table. She reacts to a noise nobody else can hear and flinches.]
YOUNG DOLORES: Abuela, my ears hurt! I keep hearing so many things from around town and I can’t turn it off! Kids are yelling. It’s so loud!
ABUELA: Don’t worry, Dolores. It may be bad for now, but just think! Your gift will be helping our family.
[Flash back to the present. The muffled sounds of people talking grow louder and Dolores stuffs her hands to her ears, still crying. She mouths the words “shut up” over and over again, but no sound comes out. An instrumental plays— it’s a reprise of “What Else Can I Do?” but it’s sadder, yet somehow sinister. Dolores slowly stands and steps towards the picture, moving her hands to wipe her tears away.]
DOLORES, singing:
Never do the unexpected
Stand up straight, stick it through
Uphold the family that wants you to hear it all and never asked you..
What else do you want to do?
[Dolores walks outside her room and paces around the halls, her head downcast.]
Bury weakness that exposes
You can hear things as far as a mile
Doesn’t anyone think I don’t wanna hear
Everything going on while
I must support the family, act like I’m okay, listen while he says she’s perfect
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
I can hear, you’re hard on them all, but I feel like I can’t even speak
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
I’m not something who’s feelings you forget
What if I’m done with your games?
I’ll go my own way
[DOLORES walks out downstairs and sees the petals Isabela made all over the floor. She tosses them in the air and mimics her cousin again.]
A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs
Hanging vines
Isa, I love you, but have you ever asked what I think?
It’s cold in your shadow
[She picks up a flower petal.]
When you neglect a flower, it will wilt away
Until all of its colors have drained away
If you know that, why don’t you know cousins are the same?
Don’t want to be your amiga if you don’t care
Oh, Bruno said he’d only love you!
[Dolores punches the petal and it breaks in her hand. She slams it down and rushes to Julieta’s kitchen, and starts to hack at the flowers on her dress with a cutting knife]
You are no prized, precious flower
Tried to hide my sorrow but it will erupt
Yeah, you’re a rose with thorns
That’s great, but I too can shine
I can shine!
[As she holds the high note on “shine”, she throws down the scissors and the camera quickly moves to Dolores’s door, which suddenly shifts, as the sound waves that are depicted going towards her move so that they’re coming from her, her hands turning outward as if she’s directly sending out the sound. Dolores doesn’t notice, and meanwhile slams her foot down. A sound wave seems to come from her, rattling the floor boards. Pan to outside, where the Madrigal family looks around.]
MIRABEL: What was that sound?
[The music pauses and Dolores looks down, a bit confused. She nervously plays with her hair, wondering if she really did that. She backs away and memories of Dolores’s past in the movie and in her childhood play over the screen briefly: a scene of her hearing other kids talk about her being weird as a child, her having to listen to Mariano say he wants five babies with Isabela, her hearing Bruno in the walls and refusing to tell anyone as his prediction for her echoes in her mind. She hears the family members outside discussing the sound and dashes to a previously-unseen sunroom in the Casa, slowly smiling. The music starts again, now actively sinister and no longer resembling the original song, more distorted now.]
DOLORES, singing again. her voice not quiet as it was before but much louder:
A quiet world, I can be secluded
I’ll be the one everyone has to listen to
(I’ve weaponized my curse)
My life is mine to do with as I choose
And I don’t have to hear all of you!
(Any of you-ooh-ooh)
[A sound wave comes directly from her, so loud it rattles the floor. Casita attempts to fix things and rattles back, the windows shaking as they put up the covers from the light so they won’t crack, casting Dolores in mostly darkness.]
What could they possibly expect was going to happen when they made me be quiet?
They never cared when things got too loud for me
I just wanted someone to turn it down
[A brief crescendo as the music changes.]
Turn it down..
[Another sound wave leaves her body, breaking the ground beneath her, and she rushes out and faces the candle head on.]
I have a mama who’s gift is a curse
I have a cousin who was lost without a gift
I have an Abuela who weaponizes us all
What could I do to fix this?
Oh, what could I do?
(What else can I do? What else can I do? What else, what else..)
[As the background words of her voice slowly get louder, the candle flickers.. as if in fear, and another sound wave comes out. Pan out to the Madrigal family. Mirabel covers her ears, Isabela rushes towards the door, and Luisa nervously mutters to herself. Pepa tries to use her mantra of “clear skies” to calm down.]
You’re weak and
You’re helpless
To stop me destroying you
(You aren’t even a miracle, all you do is ruin lives, my power was a curse all my life)
My power’s made anew
[As Isabela flings open the door, another sound wave comes out, so loud it practically makes the screen flicker breaking the fourth wall. As it goes out her dress flickers around her and changes to her colors— red, pale orange, and flickers with sparkling sound wave designs.]
What else can I do?!
[Isabela rushes over and the music slows down. The song ends just as the candle flickers and goes out, and the candle falls down. Abuela runs in and sees it, and Casita starts to crumble. Dolores laughs.]
~~~~
Do not ask what happens next. Figure it out for yourself because this was a midnight thing yk and a wacky dream. Do with this AU what you will and thanks for putting up with me (but seriously Abuela was toxic and I think it could have benefited the movie to show the very realistic resentment at least one of the kids would have for Abuela so fite me on this)
