Tata’s Secret Santa Drabble

I got @cheetour for the SPLAT Secret Santa gift exchange, so here is a little fluffy drabble combining her hyperfixations of Encanto and Pokemon!

It was the dawning of a new day as little Mirabel and Camilo Madrigal raced down the stairs to start their first official day as Pokemon trainers. Just a few days past her tenth birthday, Mirabel was excited to get her first Pokemon while Camilo had been waiting several months so they would get their first Pokemon together. It was, as Camilo would lament about for months, freakin’ ridiculous.

Waiting for them on the kitchen table surrounded by flowers and confetti were two pokeballs for the children – each with a card with their name on it containing their first Pokemon picked out specially by their parents and with the aid of their siblings who helped catch them.

It was a fact Isabela rubbed in Camilo’s face the past couple days knowing just how excited he was to find out what Pokemon his family had chosen for him. Very much a long weekend of “I know something you don’t know” and Dolores playing dumb whenever Camilo would go begging for her to tell him what he got.

Mirabel on the other hand was about as ditzy and aloof during her waiting period as her Tio Felix’s Dragonite.

“Good morning, ninos.” Julieta was busy preparing for the clinic that morning, letting her companion Butterfree sprinkle sleeping powder into an ingredient pouch. “Are you both excited for your big day?”

“Morning, Mama. Is this one mine?” Mirabel ignored the question and picked up the pokeball for Camilo who snatched it from her hand and tossed her the one with her name on it. Without missing a beat she smiled wide – teeth missing. “Oh, I hope it’s a Butterfree like yours Mama.”

“You know, when I got Butterfree, she was just a little Caterpie.” Julieta pet her hair and slipped the pouch into her apron. “Just like your father’s Beedrill used to be a-”

“-Weedle!” Camilo interjected.

“Well, well,” Julieta beamed and ruffled his curls too, “someone’s been studying.”

“I sure have. I’m going to be the resident Encanto Pokemon Master!”

“I just think they’re neat,” Mirabel said, looking at her pokeball.

“Your Tio’s waiting for you outside.” Julieta finished packing her basket as her Butterfree got ready to head out the door with her. “He’s going to teach you everything you need to know about Pokemon.”

Isabela passed by into the kitchen with her Ivysaur to which Mirabel shouted, “Hey Isa! I got a pokemon now!”

“She knows.” Camilo glared at his cousin.

Isabela on the other hand ignored him and returned her sister’s remark with a kind smile. “You sure do! Why don’t you open it up and see what it is?”

To the shock of her older sister, Mirabel slammed the pokeball down with zero remorse for the creature inside, and out sprang a...

“How come I got an Eevee, Tio?”

Outside Casita, Bruno was stretching, as if he himself were about to go into battle. His niece and nephew stood a few feet away, both their new Pokemon sitting on the grass looking about as absent-minded as Pepa’s Raichu.

It was safe to assume the couple’s Dragonite and Raichu were a match made in Heaven.

“Because Mirabel, your gift has the potential to be so many things,” Bruno said. “A perfect blank slate destined for so many options without being confined to just one gift.”

Camilo raised his hand. “Why did I get a Ditto, Tio?”

“You change shape sometimes.”

“Cool!” both children shouted.

“Alright.” Bruno stood up and clapped his hands together. “You guys ready to learn how to battle?”

Mirabel raised her hand.

“Yes, Mira?”

“What if we don’t want to fight?”

“Well, you have to.”

“Why?”

“You just have to. If someone sees you walking around minding your own business, they’ll block your path and say some random shit like “The important thing is not how long you live, it’s how you live it” or “I like wearing shorts!” and then that’s it – you have to fight.

“Even if we’re kids?”

“Especially if you’re kids. Most of these troglodytes have like 3 Level 8 Pidgeys and they see some marks like you two and think “Yeah, this is an easy way to earn some money.”

“What’s this about money?” Camilo asked, hand raised again.

“Well if you lose, you have to pay the winner.”

“Tio?” Mirabel raised her other hand and kept both in the air. “Who made these rules?”

“They’ve always been around.”

“But Abuela’s in charge of Encanto. Can’t she change the rules?”

“Abuela benefits the most from these rules. You think Casita makes your fancy clothes and pays for all your food? No, that’s your Abuela and her Kangaskhan standing outside the plaza bars on Friday nights. Some nobody paid for all your ceremony clothes because he was too drunk to remember his Kingler doesn’t know Flamethrower.”

“Oh.” Both children said with as much enthusiasm as a eulogy.

“Yeah, so no more questions.”

Bruno took his two pokeballs from his ruana and let out his Raticate and Magikarp.

“How come you have two Pokemon and everyone else only has one, Tio?” Camilo asked.

“A certain someone who shan't be named thought I predicted her fish would die, but he’s just like this.” He gestured to his Magikarp flopping about in the dirt. “I felt bad for the poor thing so I took him in.”

“Easy defeat,” Camilo boasted and ordered his Ditto to transform. Instead of transforming into the Raticate, he chose the way of the fish, and he too flopped about in the dirt.

Mirabel’s Eevee immediately fainted after the Raticate looked at it. Poor thing had social anxiety.

“See that?” Bruno said to her. “You just lost your first match, Mira, so pay up.” He held out his hand and Mirabel begrudgingly handed over her birthday money.

“Let this be a lesson,” he said, “don’t let this happen to you out in the wild.”

Camilo walked over and picked up his Magikarp-Ditto to put in front of the Raticate. He immediately transformed into a Raticate, went feral, and bit the shit out of Bruno’s. Bruno’s Raticate immediately threw the match because damn, biting hurts.

“Pay up, Tio.” Camilo held his hand out.

Bruno grumbled and handed over Mirabel’s birthday money to him.

“Hell yeah, I’m gonna be a pokemon master!”

After Alma Madrigal and Dru Gru die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. Isabela here is from Paldea and is definitely a Grass type trainer. She follows the Gym Leaders Tulip and Brassius as inspirations. I feel should would have both Bellossom and Vileplume but Bellossom just screams Isabela.

Performer Mirabel Madrigal, Up And Ready To Steal The Show!

In a nameless region, born in the hidden town called Encanto. Mirabel Madrigal is the second youngest grandchild of the esteemed Alma Madrigal. But unlike the rest of her family, she didn’t receive any gift due to a complication on the day of her ceremony, making her family very protective of her. But determined to be as helpful as the rest of her family and not to worry them, she learned to sew and embroidered and be the family tailor and make them dresses or repair them if they damage it by accident.

When she isn’t at home, she goes out to the village. She isn’t much of a battler, finding it too difficult and frustrating to her liking (And her being accidental-prone like her father didn't help). So instead, she does performance, partnering up with her favorite (and only) partner Eevee. Doing various acts with Eevee’s ability in an unexpected and surprising way. Most of her audience are childrens who are entranced by the various ways a pokemon move can be used. And everytime, she would change her act. But her most favorite was when she acted as a cocky and bold ‘trainer’ and used a lot of cool and awesome moves. Sometimes Camilo joins her and they would ‘battle’ in the most exasperated and over-the-top way possible, hamming it up until the kids cheer as loud as when a competition happens. Seeing them all work up and excited like that brings a smile to her face.

And when not entertaining the town kids, Mirabel would often be in Casita with whoever else available at the time. Not liking being in the town due to several of the people harassing her for favor and benefits after her failed ceremony. Forcing her to constantly be in Casita for her own safety and in turn, Casita is off-limits to people of the town besides the more trusted few.

But despite all of this, she is happy with her life.

146.... 146!!!!!!! Its taken me 12 years to get that many...

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 

468,189...... 8D and 1/4th of that... was all from Last Year, 2023, the year of Dracfield

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Well if I list all of the ones I have written for, its a pretty big list. But like... The Passenger, Renfield/Dracula media in general, Dead by Daylight, Stranger Things, Rise of the Guardians, Encanto, Gravity Falls, Pokemon... Lots of other misc horror media, too~

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

GOD can I skip this?? Because its a fast way for everyone to look at me and condemn me because the one thing all these fics have in common are problematic ships around One Type of Problematic and im anxious but like. Fuck it.

HAHA..OH BOY... that would be Si Tú No Estás Aquí an Encanto fic with double main character death so like. Heads Up if you read it. Proud of it but man it hurts

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? 

God I have to think uhhhh.. Probably Father's Day, a DBD AU fic that's tooth rottingly sweet, imo. I know Babies Ever After isn't for every character but I really do hold it close to my heart for Evan and Meg ;3;

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not in a while, but it's not uncommon. I write everything from Incest to underage to bestiality to snuff to necro... so it usually sets people off. Doesnt happen as often as it used to though

9. Do you write smut?

Looks at 85 of my 146 fics being marked Explicit

Sometimes! But it has to be an idea that reeeeally grabs me

God. idk. Tell me what my strengths are??

I'd like to say 'capturing characters voices'. I think im good at that...

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Probably writing action. I can see it so cool in my head but writing it down?? uggghghhghh

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't usually write dialogue in other languages BUT I have done it for Encanto fics! I usually try to find someone who speaks the language if I'm not confident in writing it but with Spanish I know my way around it enough to feel relatively confident.

19. First fandom you wrote for? 

Harry Potter waaaaay back 2011-ish? on FF.Net lol. Always loved Drarry and Snarry, you can see even back then I had my Tastes figured out XD

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? 

idk man, I really don't. I've written a lot I enjoyed at this part, fics Ive gone back and read more than once! But I just cant make myself Pick one or even a top three.... So you'll JUST have to read all 146 and figure out which one YOU guys like (just avoid the ones that make you wanna die inside I wont blame you!)

Some different crossovers.

Bruno the Kadabra. 2023. Pokemon/Encanto crossover. Firstly, Bruno is a touching character, secondly, he reminded me of my favorite psychic type, just as thin, can seem sinister and is considered a harbinger of trouble, but in fact he is not without charm. Thirdly, Nintendo for 16 years: "Not a word about kadabra!"

Anzati Hunter D. 2016. Star Wars/D: Bloodlust crossover. I think it's rather stylish.

Lysandre Cafe. 2022. "Do you want to be with those who give or those who take?". Idea of a crossover with "Menu" (I can't vouch for the accuracy of the quote, as I watched the film in my native language, but its theme, in my opinion, suits Lysandre)

I, Mewtwo. 2014. Crossover with "I, Frankenstein" made for fun.

Fuji's Monster. 2023. Mewtwo as Frankenstein's monster from "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" movie. "Have you thought about the consequences of what was started by you? Who am I? Do you think I'm evil? You hardly know how much love and affection is in me, and hardly believe how much hate is in me. And if I can not meet one sense, I am completely give myself for other!"

Rose Red. 2013. Sabrina's youth associates for me with S. King's "Rose Red", that's why I wanted to draw her like this. 

Bonding. 2015. Mewtwo and Indominus Rex. Crossover with "Jurassic world"

I did it 35 minutes ago. 2016. Mewtwo as Ozymandias from "Watchmen", just for fun as a perfect ending for "Mewtwo strikes back"

Guilty! 2014. «I was weak. That's why I needed you... Needed someone to punish me for my sins...» Professor Fuji as protagonist in "Silent Hill" game series. Crossover is based on SH 2, but totally AU.

No Man in the Mirror (Fantastic Beasts). I think this counts.

He stood there and breathed, felt the pain, the question racing around inside his mind, never quiet, always asked, by him, by others, by the man in the mirror. But there was no man in the mirror now, just as there was no longer any sign of any of the ones he had been any longer. Those men were gone. There was no man in the mirror. But still, the question remained: Who are you, Percival Graves?

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I would have to say For Remembrance (Holes in the Floor of the Mind). Amnesia fic with vital memories finally being partially recovered in the end, after years of trial and tribulation.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet.

9. Do you write smut?

Um, I've written some sexual content, but nothing hard-core

10. Craziest crossover?

Either Pokemon/The Jewel (which is a magical version of The Handmaid's Tale), or Fantastic Beasts/Tangled.

I haven't written it yet, but Doctor Strange/Encanto is probably going to top those.

Not that I know of.

I have attempted to write one with @sarcasticsciencefictionwriter that is a Hannibal/Supernatural crossover, but it is not going well.

Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter and Newtina. They are tied.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

The Jewel. Pokémon anime crossover that I haven't been able to work on in over two years due to computer issues. And, unfortunately, it seems like All Night or a Hundred Years (Fantastic Beasts) might be that way due to writer's block.

Vulnerability and emotions, it seems. I get complimented on it in my fics so I guess I'm doing something write.

Humor.

I do it all the time.

I have been possessed with the concept of an Encanto/Pokemon crossover where basically everything is the same except the Madrigal family’s gifts are accompanied by an associated pokemon.

Explanations/rationale under the cut:

Abuela Alma - Volcarona

Fire type, which makes for a sensible link with an undying flame

Moth imagery, which fits for her given the butterflies that are associated with both her and the candle itself

Pseudo-legendary: roughly half its ‘dex entries talk about how it saved humans and pokemon in the past, which makes it pretty reasonable to associate it with a miracle

Julieta - Chansey

Known for its highly-nutritious eggs that even people without an appetite will devour -- fitting for someone who heals with cooking

Also very rare, making it a clear blessing to have around

While it does evolve, all of Blissey’s ‘dex entries mention that its eggs are filled with happiness, rather than having healing properties, so it makes more sense for her Gift partner to stay a Chansey rather than evolving on

Pepa - Castform

Weather control, which is a perfect fit for someone whose emotions affect the local weather

While the Castform would definitely be her Gift partner, I could definitely see her with something like Cherrim (which also changes form with the weather)

Absol was dubbed ‘The Disaster Pokemon’ because it kept trying to warn people of foreseen danger, only to be unfairly maligned for the attempt -- seems pretty fitting for someone that gets blamed for telling people the future when they ask

While he undoubtedly has a collection of rat pokemon (Rattatas and the like) the Absol was his Gift partner, and I can’t help but think it went with him when he disappeared -- after all, the visions aren’t Absol’s fault, and it’s nice to have someone that knows what you’ve been through

Absol is also one of my favorite pokemon so

Isabela - Roserade

She obviously needs a Grass type, particularly something floral

I ended up searching through the ‘dex for something that would fit, and ended up with Roserade specifically because one of its entries talks about how the sweeter its scent, the more toxic it is (a nod to her hidden depths)

While the Roserade is undoubtedly her Gift partner, she probably has other floral pokemon around like Lilligant, Bellossom, etc.

Dolores - Clefable

It’s ‘dex entries literally note that it can hear a pin drop from half a mile away, which is how Mirabel introduces her cousin in the first place -- what more is there to say?

Another extreme rarity of a pokemon, so also likely to be seen as a blessing or sign of good fortune

Clefable is another one of my favorite pokemon okay

Luisa - Bewear

Her gift is super strength, so a fighting type was a no-brainer, given that so many of them lean into being strong physical fighters

Bewear fits particularly well, though, because not only is Luisa incredibly strong, she’s also very feminine: having something pink and cute seems like a perfect match for a young woman that embraces her femininity as much as she does her raw power

Camilo - Ditto

Shapeshifting and perfect copies: there are only two pokemon that naturally learn transform, and the only other one is Mew (and I’m not doling out actual legendaries)

Though he does have chameleon imagery on his ruana, Kecleon is geared toward invisibility and ‘blending in’ rather than actual transformation

Zorua and Zoroark were also considered, but both of them rely on illusion rather than actual shapeshifting, so ultimately Ditto feels like the strongest fit

Mirabel - Audino

It’s all about the empathy: Audino uses those little feelers on its ears to understand how others are feeling, and Mirabel is able to reach out and understand the hidden insecurities and traumas of her family

Also, its ears look a bit like butterfly wings to me (particularly in its Mega-Evolved form)

The Audino is definitely a Gift Pokemon, but probably isn’t known to be one until the end: it showed up around the seemingly failed Gift Ceremony, but not from the door the way the others did, so no one made the connection

Her parents probably decided on their own to let Mirabel take it on as a partner in an attempt to cheer her up, given how hard that lost door must have hit her

Antonio - Liepard

We really need more big cat pokemon, Liepard is about as close to a jaguar as I can get

He undoubtedly has a ton of other pokemon hanging around like Toucannon, but given that the jaguar hangs with him through most of the movie after the Gift ceremony, Liepard seems like the best choice for a Gift pokemon

Felix - Oricorio

Not actually a Gift pokemon, just his buddy

Felix is a joy and so encouraging and upbeat, so coupled with the warm color palette for his clothes, the pom-pom variant seems like a perfect fit

Agustin - Buneary

Also not a Gift pokemon, just a buddy

Buneary having Klutz as an ability, coupled with how much of a punch those ears pack when they uncoil, does nothing to mitigate Agustin’s accident-prone nature

I’ll be real, though, I also considered a Teddiursa (because of all the bees he has to deal with)
