I resonate with this statement sooo much. Every time I sit down to create art, it's like the weight of the world is lifted from my shoulders. I've been on a forced hiatus from art for a little bit & I'm surprised at how a week or so has been so impactful on me mentally. I feel so drained. Meet Breakthough! This large, heavily textured painting is 24" x 36". You probably know I have a love of The Home Depot and unusual art materials. The texture in this piece is sanded grout, left over from a home repair project of mine. You can't buy grout in tiny quantities as it turns out so I had almost a full quart laying around. I hate wasting stuff so I put to use!⠀ .⠀ The gray coloring comes from Higgins Artist Inks. The unlaying colors are acrylic paint. Orange is probably my least favorite color. Because of that I try to use it periodically. Today’s 5-minute paint exercise was all about orange. This texturelicious painting is called Lush. It features vibrant greens and teal acrylic paint over a layer of sanded grout on canvas board. Grout can be fun to work with, especially when you mix in a little varnish. I didn't figure that out until after this piece so this one took a lot longer to create than it should have. This is how all my space abstracts start. Paint in cups mixed with pouring medium, a touch of water and a few drops of silicone oil. Then magic happens....usually. Some of this year's Intergalactic series were born from pours that didn't quite look right on their own. Painting on stars, planets, and comets make a so-so painting into a little universe of it's own. Hi everyone! I know most of you have no idea what I look like so I'm going to work on that. This photo was taking a few years ago but I chose it because I'm standing in front of a spray painted planet. It fits with my new Intergalactic theme really well. ⠀ .⠀ I've always had a love of science & astronomy. It started with the original Star Wars, which my dad took me to see at least 50 times at the $1 Theater back then. All through high school, & up until they closed, I had a subscription to Omni magazine (still miss it!). I still love a good sci-fi novel & try to keep up with science news. This is me creating the texture painting in my last post. The piece is dry but I’m not sure I like it that much. I’m letting it ‘rest’ and I’ll look at it with fresh eyes in a few days. . Over the years I’ve learned to let questionable art sit in a drawer for at least a few days before deciding if it’s a success or failure. This will me my next painting in the Intergalactic Series. (sorry about the glare!) Oddly, I completely forgot about this little 9" x 12" painting. I put in the drawer unit I used to dry paintings before the construction project & then it slipped my mind (oops). ⠀ .⠀ The first shot shows it just as I started putting down some 'stars'. The second shows my progress. I have a LONG way to go yet. The second image shows the addition of blue stars but I've also added yellow & red in there too since I know there are yellow, red, & blue stars in real life. I'm an abstract artist but I do try to include those little extra details. ⠀ .⠀ I'm thinking of adding a comet streaking across this one. I absolutely love hardware stores, especially after I learned that Painter's Caulk is chemically identical to the expensive molding compound in art stores. The texture is the same but one is thicker than the other. Caulk is like cream cheese in brick form whereas molding paste is like whipped cream cheese (it has air in it). Painter's caulk takes ink & acrylic paint beautifully & is exactly like buttercream frosting (I'm hungry can you tell?). If you want rich saturated colors, you'll need pigment powders. ⠀ .⠀ I think I'm going to play with some texture this afternoon!
