"TOY FACTORY SEEKS HELP FROM COUNCIL," Toronto World. May 16, 1918. Page 5. --- A deputation appeared before yesterday's session of the board of control on behalf of a toy factory, which aims to employ only soldiers or their dependents. Controller Robbins pointed out that the factory was as yet only so in name, and hoped to gain bond surety from the city council to enable the firm to go forward with the work. The factory is at 227 Gerrard street, and $10,000 in bonds would help along the good work. Controller Maguire expressed the opinion that the vocational committee. was taking up the re-education of the soldiers. "This is a matter," said the mayor, "which belongs to the provincial and not to the municipal authorities. The government is always saddling the municipalities with its responsibilities. I shall be glad to consider the grant if possible of a free site to encourage this industry." Controller McBride was solidly entrenched against any grant of money s or bonds as a pernicious business principle. Mr. McAndrew (for the depntation). "We are not asking for $10,000, but for cash to help us hold a bazaar. We want to aiso money to continue our business." The deputation was advised to make its application in writing.

I feel like in the U.S. we should be holding protests against U.S. military trainings in Africa or something. Not that it would convince the U.S. government to stop doing something they’re so heavily invested in financially but it would be a good central message to direct some of the current energy towards and would make more people aware of one of the ways that neocolonialism operates and would hopefully be carried forward into future movements

hot take but if you fight for a country's government it is the government's fucking job to pay for your support, not the job of butcher haig's pet philanthropy project (which by the way spends 10% of its operational budget on the fucking poppy appeal and a further 3.5% on "remembrance" according to its 2023 report, plus at least 17% on fundraising, and only 57% on anything that actually benefits the veteran community - I hate the charity I work for for its focus on branding over actionable support, and even then we spent >67% on actual charitable activities in the same period. this is not "just a normal charity" levels of branding costs.)
and I mention it being Haig's pet project because you cannot fucking convince me that the company that sells Haig tartan knick-knacks right beside the poppies meant to commemorate (among others) the victims of the Somme offensive gives a single blue fuck about actual remembrance of war atrocities.
Hey about the poppy stuff… yeah it started as for WW1/2 soldiers but to this day the campaign gives money to the families of dead soldiers from current conflicts. It’s not just an historic thing xxx
I'm well aware, but that doesn't justify egregious displays of faux patriotism.
Families and veterans should be receiving support regardless, remembrance is about remembering - not about hyping up the next conflict for people to participate in.

Employing a Veteran
Photo by Benjamin Faust I decided to write this article based on the typical behaviour of the new entitled generation or “snowflakes” that are now in the workplace, giving managers like me a hard time. In my current role I am actively employing veterans and demonstrating the terrific benifits. I want to champion the benefits of employing a veteran. To keep things straight, I write this from…

The Sullivan siblings, from youngest to eldest.
By surprisingly popular demand, Spike the (Baby) Dragon.
When Simon was a baby, he was found on the doorstep of the Sullivan's, who quickly adopted him as the family's little brother. The Sullivans live in Washington D.C. The mother is a writer and activist and the father is an educator. Captain Samuel (33) is a veteran of WWI, Thea (21) is a recent graduate of Howard University, and Simon (12) is still surviving junior high school.
Simon and Thea now live in Ponyville, Nebraska together, following Thea's employment as the small country town's resident librarian.
