10. What is your favorite genre book to recommend to someone who doesn’t usually like that genre?

Usually when people ask me for a rec for a genre they don’t usually like, they are asking for sci-fi, and I start by trying to figure out different access points based on what they already like. I’m not much of a hard sci-fi person, tending more to the space opera and political thrillers, so here’s a few “if you like x, maybe try y”:

If you like romance, give Everina Maxwell’s Winter’s Orbit a try. It’s definitely sci-fi in setting and plot, but it also hits nicely in the formulaic patterns of a arranged-marriage, strangers-to-lovers story that will help you through it even if the sci-fi elements are throwing you off. The author has another similar book that increases the sci-fi elements and is enemies-to-lovers as well, so if you like Winter’s Orbit, Ocean’s Echo is a good next step.

If you like non-fiction, The Martian by Andy Weir is a great pick. I have multiple friends who got into reading again as adults via The Martian. It’s well-written, well-grounded, funny, and very sci-fi. If you’ve already read it, then maybe give To Be Taught if Fortunate by Becky Chambers a try. It can be described with all the same adjectives, plus it’s a short novella, so if you’re hesitant, it’s less intimidating.

If you like mysteries or political thrillers, boy is there a lot of great sci-fi out there for you. The crux of a lot of sci-fi is space or high-tech settings with a plot that asks questions about personhood, and that mixes really well with detectives and spies wandering around trying to solve problems and find truths. Try Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells (it’s partway through a series of great books and novellas, but that one’s the most traditional mystery plot) or A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (ambassador solving her predecessor’s mysterious death while trying to do his job)(I’d also recommend this one if you read a lot of classics) EDIT: just realized I mistyped - book 1 by Arkady Martine is A Memory Called Empire.

If YA/ Bildungsromanen/ New Adult figuring the world out through trial and error is often your jam, try Provenance by Ann Leckie (for the kid who really wants to do things right) or The Warrior’s Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold (for another kid who wants to do things right, but is also a high-energy chaos gremlin).

If you like fantasy, you probably already have read some sci-fi; it’s all under the speculative fiction umbrella and genres are vague anyway. All the same, I know this is the Locked Tomb Website, but give Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir a shot (it’s got magic and mayhem and an epic locked-room whodunnit mystery). The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord is also good - it has a team of people traveling together and thinking about morals and discovering new abilities, plus some romance.

I’m sure there’s lots of genres I’m forgetting right now, but feel free to send me another ask for any specific one!

Chapter One: Extended Contracts

The probe was dead.

I knew it the moment I lay eyes on the thing. And no, it wasn’t because of the layer of icy crust surrounding the shaft nor did it have anything to do with user error. I knew it the moment they told me what the issue was. The probe had been running non-stop for four months in a freezing cold vacuum. AKA; space. And they were using a standard run-of-the-mill type-13. No way could that handle a four month operating time with no breaks.

Dumbasses.

The two techs that had brought me out here were arguing through their helmets on the main channel; I could hear everything from the saliva smacking against their lips to their stuffed up noses they wouldn’t stop snorting through as if that would help them breathe any better.

Just use a goddamn tissue.

“What’s the application?” I asked again. I knew what it was, I just wanted them to stop barking at each other. The techs got nervous when I came up here. At first I thought it was because my job was to report back to HQ and let them know if the tech’s were doing their jobs; RJ told me it’s because I’m a woman.

One tech, the one that only had one front tooth and was clearly the follower of the other guy responded after snorting mucus down his throat. “Temp and pressure of the atmosphere surrounding the pipes. Gotta know how much they can handle before being blown to shit.”

He looked at his bro for approval and smirked at me after receiving a nod.

“Can you tell us what the problem is so we can get back down? Boss don’t like us being up here too long wasting oxygen.” Leader boy said this nonchalantly but I knew who his boss was and also knew that a guy had been fired last week for using more than the mediated level of oxygen for a site run like this one. Found out he had brought his girl up for some “sight seeing”.

Fucking idiot.

“It’s dead. You’ll need to get a new one. A Type- 15 to be exact if you want it to run longer than 4 months out here.”

Elijah's relationship with Kassandra

Their relationship is my Roman Empire! I'll write for the other siblings as well, but Elijah goes first since he's my fave (and kassie's lol)

Elijah remembers the day Kassie was born very well (also he was like 10 btw)

It was a bright and sunny day, despite it being autumn

He wondered if it would be another girl, since their mother gave birth to Rebekah only a year prior

Klaus and Kol were saying it would be a boy, but deep down he wished for another sister

He was with his brothers, training with wooden swords under their father's supervision

Then, Ayana, his mother's friend came down running toward them

"Good news, Mikael! It's another healthy girl!"

He remembers holding her for the first time, her little face red and wrinkly

"What shall we name her, Elijah?" His mother asked him softly

Elijah thought about a name and said the first one that came to his mind

"Kassandra. Like the Greek Princess from your stories"

As he was much older than them, Elijah was quite protective of his little sisters

He remembers Kassie asking their father if she could also train with a sword and later he comforted her when their father yelled at her

As a child (even as an adult) Kassie was scared of thunder. Often when there was a storm brewing, she would hide in Elijah's arm

Many times, little Kassandra would be plagued by nightmares

She was too scared to wake up her parents so instead she would wake up Elijah

With teary eyes she would shake the dark-haired boy and ask if she could sleep in his arms

He never refused her

Elijah also remembers the day Kassie died, because, well, they died together

After the death of their youngest brother Henrik, his parents started acting strange

One fateful night, everything changed

He and Kassie were put in a room and told to wait. Elijah had a bad feeling about the whole thing

Their father came into the house, closed the door, and stared at them

"Father? What's happening?" Kassie asked quietly

Elijah's heart dropped when their father pulled out his sword and lunged toward Kassie

Elijah stood in front of Kassie, shielding her as their father plunged the blade of his sword into his heart

The last memory of Elijah's human life was the screams of his little sister echoing in his ears

Kassie screamed as she fell to her knees. She was in too much shock to defend herself.

She felt the blade piercing her chest and fell next to Elijah

Her last memory was the sight of her brother's dead body

In the early days of their new life, Elijah tried his best to keep everyone under control

Out of everyone, Kassie seemed to struggle the most with their new vampiric urges

She had a hard time accepting the fact that to survive, she had to kill innocent people

Over time, they learned to feed without killing

Kassie would never admit but Elijah was most definitely her favorite brother

Elijah, ever the peace holder, refused to admit Kassie was his favorite sibling

The others knew well that she, in fact, was his favorite sibling

Bookworms, both of them lol

They would spend countless hours in libraries, reading together and discussing the current state of the world

She almost sees him as a father figure, since Mikael wasn't the best father to any of them really

Kassie always had a gentle heart and her vampirism only magnified that

Elijah would always shield and defend Kassie from Klaus when the latter would raise his voice at her

One look into her big blue eyes and her pouty lips and this man is crumbling (see gif above lol)

She knows she has Elijah (and Klaus) wrapped around her little finger

She's aware that manipulating her brothers using their love for her isn't the right thing to do, but a girl sometimes has to use morally dubious means to make her life easier

"Elijah?"

"Yes?"

"Can you give me your credit card? I saw these really cute boots, I have to have them! Please???" She asks while batting her eyelashes

*he sighs and pulls out his wallet*

*she squeals and kisses him on the cheek*

"You're the best brother in the whole wide world!"

Elijah smirks while shaking his head and continues reading

He knows he's being manipulated but doesn't to anything about it
