Happy Birthday
Tumblr media
(continuing from this post)
Texas woke up the next morning to the sound of someone in her kitchen; after a brief moment of internally-resolved panic, she sighed as a slight smile crept onto her face. That was the Doctor, no doubt - he’d stayed the night, saying he’d make sure they both had the day off so they could make the most of her birthday, but even after being together like this for the past few months, she couldn’t say for sure what he was planning...Was that sausage he was cooking?
“Good morning, Tex,” he smiled as she walked into the living/dining room. Just as she’d suspected, there was a pan on the stove and sausage frying in it. “Happy birthday.”
“Thanks. What are we doing?”
The Doctor shrugged. “Nothing crazy - I’m making breakfast, we’ll go to lunch, and after everyone’s done with their shifts tonight, PL wants to celebrate with us. Those are the only plans I made, but if there’s something you want to do, just say the word and I’ll make it happen.”
“No, that sounds good.” She hovered by the kitchen table for a minute before walking over to hug him from behind. “Actually, there is one thing.”
“Like I said, just say the word.”
Texas took a moment, making sure this is absolutely what she wanted. “I want Projekt Red to fluff my tail.”
“Really?” He nodded. “I can make that happen, no problem. Do you give presents on your birthday?”
“I don’t like being scared of anything, Doctor. My present to myself this year is overcoming this one.”
The Doctor turned off the burner, slid the pan he was working with to the side, and spun around to return her hug. “When we’re done with breakfast, I’ll let Kal’tsit know and ask her to send Red over.”
“Thank you. Doctor.” A quick kiss. “I’ll let you finish.”
“How do you like your eggs?” He asked before letting her go.
She shrugged. “Warm.”
“...I can work with that.”
After eating, the Doctor did as he’d said, and less than an hour after she’d made her request, Projekt Red walked through Texas’ door. “Kal’tsit told me you wanted to see- Texas?”
“Good morning, Red,” he smiled, gesturing for her to come in. “We were hoping you could help us with something today.”
“Good m-morning, Red,” Texas greeted her, half-mumbling.
Red looked from one to the other, her eyes gradually wandering to the fluffy Lupo tail so close to her. “Good morning. Why do you need my help?”
“I...” She took a deep breath. “I want you to touch my tail.”
“You want me to?” Her eyes were shining.
The Doctor gestured to the couch. “Let’s all take a seat. Can I set a few boundaries before you start, Red?”
“Boundaries?” Red grabbed onto his sleeve as they walked across the room. “What kind of boundaries?”
“If Texas or myself say ‘Stop’ at any point, you’ll stop right away; take off your jacket and leave all of your knives in it; and don’t try to touch anywhere but her tail.”
She cocked her head. “Why would I touch anywhere else?”
“...No reason,” he smiled to himself, earning a soft glare from Texas. “I’m going to sit at this end; Red, go ahead and sit over there. Texas, whenever you’re ready.”
“Okay.” Deep breath. She looked from the Doctor to the spawn of He- Projekt Red, wondering why this creat- child scared her so much. She was harmless to her friends, and the Doctor seemed to like her, even, so why was this murde- young Operator so terrifying to her?
Texas sat down, letting her tail settle in Red’s lap. “Alright, Red. Go ahead.”
“Thank you~” As the fur touched her, there was a look in her eye that it took a moment for the other Lupo to place, partially because looking at her made her head spin: gratitude. Projekt Red, for all her coarseness and practical savagery in the field, gently stroked Texas’ tail, as if it would break at a moment’s notice. Her face was a ray of sunshine brightening the entire room. “It’s so soft.”
“Thank you,” she whispered, her heart still racing but calming down. This was...nice. Why didn’t the Doctor ask to touch her tail more often? It was certainly fluffy enough, wasn’t it?
With her mind suddenly far away from Red, Texas didn’t notice when the younger Lupo’s tail drifted within arms’ reach, and it was only when the Doctor spoke up that she returned to reality. “Hey, Texas?”
“Yes, Doct-” Instantly, she was aware of the tail in front of her...and her own hands running through it, slowly but steadily removing the tangles from it. She frowned. “Red, your tail needs brushing.”
“Does it? Is that how you make a tail soft?”
The Doctor chuckled. “She’s so precious, heavens above.”
“Yes, that’s the best way. Brushing it yourself is hard,” Texas glanced at her paramore as she said this, “but I can take care of- it worked.”
“Now we just need to figure out how to show the others,” he nodded.
Red glanced between them. “You want to help me not scare the wolves?”
“Today is all about Texas,” the Doctor shrugged, “but that’s something we can do from tomorrow on.”
“Oh. Happy birthday, Texas.”
For some reason, hearing that from Red caused her to have a sudden allergic reaction as water pooled in her eyes. “Thank you, Red...Doctor, please get my brush.”
“On it.” He dashed off to her bathroom, thinking to himself, ‘I wonder if I can get a turn with their tails...’
-
The rest of the day was exceptional - arguably her best birthday yet. Projekt Red left once her tail was thoroughly brushed by both Texas and the Doctor, and from there they spent the day watching TV on the couch together. As was tradition, the party with the Emperor and the rest of Penguin was fun as always, especially since the Doctor, Bison AND Mostima were in attendance to absorb some of the insanity for themselves. Some good-natured ribbing, some high-octane brawling, and a decent amount of alcohol later, and the two of them were walking back to Texas’ place in good spirits.
“Hey, Doctor, tell me somethin.’” They were supporting each other evenly, knowing if either of them slipped, they’d both tumble to the ground. “Do you not like my tail?”
“What d’ya mean, I don’t like your tail? I like everything about you, darlin.’” He’d caught on to her native accent earlier in the evening, and now he couldn’t stop himself from talking the same way.
She huffed. “You never brush it, or fluff it, or aaaanything. Do you know how hard it is to keep it soft like this?”
“Nope.” He shook his head. “I don’t even have a tail.”
“I know that.”
The Doctor snickered. “You really want me to give your tail more lovin’, then? I can do that.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it.”
“Oh, you’ll feel it, darlin.’” He let his hand drift into her tail-fur as she opened the door and chuckled as she let out a yip. “Told ya you’d feel it.”
Texas pulled him inside and half-slammed the door behind him before following him to the bed. Things got a little blurry, but the next morning, she woke up in the Doctor’s arms. She licked his cheek. “Doctor, it’s time for work.”
“Huh? Oh, I forgot to tell you...” He yawned, his stretching being one of his hands drifting along her back to stroke her tail.
“Tell me what?” She scratched at his back just enough for him to feel it. “It’s time to get up, either way.”
The Doctor shook his head. “I got us another day off...You still have to open my present, anyway.”
“Present?”
“Yeah...” He finally relented and sat up. “Stay here, I’ll go get it.”
Several minutes later, Texas was staring at a box roughly the size of a dresser. “What did you buy?”
“Something I know you’re going to like.”
“Let’s see what’s inside.” She ran a finger along the outside, and the paper shredded without any trouble. Looking inside, her eyes widened. “This is all Pocky. Doctor, where did you find somewhere that sells this much at once?”
The Doctor tapped his temple with a smile. “I’m the head of a company, Texas; they let me buy in bulk.”
“Have I told you how much I love you today?”
“You haven’t,” he shrugged, “but you and I both know you do.”
Her eyes flashed. “Let me rephrase that.” So saying, Texas bounded forward and tackled him. He’d given her another day, and she knew exactly how she wanted to spend it...

Title: An Extraordinary Day Pairing:TogaFuka Series: Dangan Ronpa (Main AU) Characters:Toko Fukawa, Byakuya Togami Warning:This is based on an AU Author’s note: I’m late writing this, but it’s ok. Summary: It’s Togami’s birthday, and he expects today to be just an ordinary day...
(Note, if there are any grammatical errors, I’m sorry)
Today seemed like an ordinary day, at least, that’s what he thought it was supposed to be...
He woke up to the smell of coffee. Coffee? In his room? Odd.
He opened his eyes to see Fukawa, still in her nightgown, standing next to him. “Good morning Byakuya.” She cooed, and picked up a tray of food off of the nightstand next to his bed, and set it on his lap.
Togami rubbed the sleep from his eyes, as he saw what was presented on the tray. Toast, coffee, and a card. He took the card and opened it. He smiled, as it contained a little poem that wished him a happy birthday that can only be conveyed by the one he called his wife.
After breakfast, he headed downstairs, almost getting trampled by Zelda in the process. She was getting big, considering she was barely over a year old. Another individual that nearly trampled him at the bottom of the stairs was Miyuki, his daughter.
“Happy birthday, Dad!” she chirped, hugging him as hard as she could. “I got something for you! It’s on the table!” Togami smiled, lifting his little girl into his arms, and walked to the dining room table, where a wrapped up package sat. “Mom had to wrap it for me, but i picked it out!” Miyuki said with pride. “Well then Miyuki, let’s see what you picked out!” He set Miyuki down, and picked up the neatly wrapped gift.
Removing the wrapping paper with ease, Togami discovered a small stuffed penguin was hiding under all of Fukawa’s late-night work. It looked somewhat like an emperor chick, with big blue eyes, and a little yellow patch on it’s chest. He could feel warmth in his chest, and a stupid grin form on his face. “They’re beautiful.” Was all he could say, making little Miyuki’s face light up, as she gave her dad another hug. “I knew you’d love it!”
The rest of the day went smoothly. From Zelda’s afternoon walk, to watching a movie with his family. Fukawa even took him out to dinner! He insisted on paying, but she demanded that since it was his birthday, she would treat him. He had to pay anyway, since she forgot to bring any money with her. She got so excited about going out with him for supper, that she forgot her wallet on her desk.
It was late, and Miyuki had gone to bed. Zelda was curled up on the couch, with their black Maine coon, Lucifer, lying beside her. Fukawa was at her desk trying to get a little writing done, still in the semi-formal dress she wore to dinner. Togami was removing the makeup from his face, and getting his pajamas on.
He walked in on her taking off the dress. She flinched for a second, followed by a sigh of relief. It was only him. Togami admired how pretty she was, from the tally-like scars all over her body, to her pudge, to the stretchmarks on her thighs and sides. How lucky he was to marry someone like her.
She had hung up the dress when he pulled her in for a hug. “Hello, Schönheit.” he purred in her ear. She grinned. “Do you even know what that means, Byakuya?”  “No, but you’ve been calling me that for years, so i assume that it can’t be that bad. You already taught me most German swears, and ‘Schönheit’ isn’t in there.” She sighed in response. “Do you want to know what it means?” He rested his chin on the top of her head, “Very much so.” She sighed again. “Alright.” with that, she moved herself back, and raised herself onto her toes, moving so that her mouth was an inch away from his ear. “It means ‘beauty’.” His eyes widened. “That’s it? You’ve secretly be calling me a beauty for eight years, or so?” Fukawa lowered herself back to flat feet, and tensing up her shoulders. “Yes.” He pulled her in, and gave her a kiss on the forehead. “I wish you had told me that sooner.”
After some playful banter, and Fukawa getting her nightgown on, the two were lying in bed, finishing up some late-night rambling, before finally deciding that they needed some sleep. Fukawa curled up next to her husband, one arm over his chest. “Goodnight, Byakuya.” He smiled, and stroked her soft, dark hair. “Goodnight, Toko.”
Fukawa had fallen asleep first, for once.Togami lay there, recalling the events of the day, before heaving a deep sigh, and closing his eyes.
  Today was anything but ordinary.

Solo travel to South Georgia and the Falklands Islands: the low down
What’s the one place in the world that has been calling to you? What’s your number one country you dream of visiting? For me, it’s always been Antarctica. The last continent. The icy land of historic explorers and penguins.
And once my interest in Antarctica deepened, so did my knowledge as I began to research more and more, and there was one place above all, that I knew I had to go to: South Georgia.
South Georgia, the remote subantarctic island a couple thousand kilometers east off the coast of Argentina, that you probably have never heard of. It is one of those places you’d probably only ever come across in National Geographic magazines or David Attenborough documentaries at the dentist’s office.
Unless you’re a super conservation geek like me and saw the “viral news” earlier this year announcing South Georgia was finally eradicated of rats and is now pest free! (read more here on the Guardian). A fragile wild environment, it’s home to some of the most incredible landscapes and wildlife on earth, not to mention South Georgia a place few make the long journey to, leaving it pristine and wild.
There are no regularly flights, or any flights really. In fact, there population is roughly 30 souls who aren’t permanent and roughly a bajillion penguins.
Unless you are a scientist or very wealthy modern-day adventurer, your chances of getting to South Georgia are slim to none unless by expedition cruise. Quark is the leader in polar expeditions, and to get to a place like South Georgia, your only option is by ship, which is what I did for almost a month earlier this year.
I’ll preface this by saying I hate cruises. Cruises are not my thing. Not remotely. But since the only way I was getting my little feet on South Georgia was by ship, I had to change my attitude.
Lucky for me, and my fellow non-cruise squad, Quark’s trips are very much expedition style trips, and not cruises. There aren’t any massage rooms (sad), there is no pool with a waterslide on deck, no neon cable lighting and definitely no scheduled group karaoke nights, though there might be some impromptu ones held in the lounge by us younger folks after 3 days at sea at 3am but that’s a story for another day.
There are no tropical beach holiday vibes on board, and the incredible ships feel very much like an adventure/expedition ship, it reminded me of Russian icebreakers I’ve been on or scientific research vessels, but more comfortable.
So while you’re on a ship, it truly feels like an expedition and not a cruise, with the landings and experiences dictated by mother nature, bolstered by a real sense of adventure. For example was so windy our first morning in South Georgia, when I rose at 4am out of sheer excitement and went to open the door on deck, well, I couldn’t actually open it because it was THAT windy. Excursion postponed til door-closing wind abates, off to somewhere else!
This kind of trip is not that’s not really a cruise, instead it’s an expedition by ship to some of the most remote places on earth. You gotta be flexible, eager and go with the flow.
For many travelers, South Georgia is the ultimate bucket list trip with their partners and significant others. But what about the rest of us single people? Friendless people? People who can’t find a travel buddy with the same budget? Or people who just like traveling alone, like me?
A lifelong solo traveler, I have never shied away from an experience because I didn’t know anyone else or had to travel alone. In fact, I usually find the opposite. I knew going into this that with several weeks on board a ship, I was going to get to know people whether I wanted to or not, which made it much easier.
With butterflies in my stomach boarding the ship in Ushuaia, I walked into my room for the first time. I was in a three bed girls bunk, the entry level room, with a porthole. Cozy.
The cheap rooms are on the bottom of the ship, which trust me, is a good thing. The higher up you go, the nicer the rooms, but you have a lot more motion as the ship moves through some of the roughest seas on earth. The more you pay, the more you sway.
Anyway, where was I? It’s basically like your first day of school but less dreadful and with no homework. And with baby furry penguins.
You arrive on board and meet as strangers, everyone is in the same boat—literally—and all unified by a profound excitement for the adventure ahead. You pick up your new school uniform, the iconic Quark yellow parka, and begin to familiarize yourself with the ship.
Here’s the library, there’s the dining room, oh and most importantly, the bar is just over there. The perfect place to meet new friends. Hello open bar tab and $5 cocktails! What up!
Pro tip: do not drink more than 2 cocktails at night on open sea days.
The ship is your home, and you quickly will familiarize yourself with your new surroundings. From movies in the evenings to intriguing lectures during the day from the knowledgeable expedition team from everything you could want to know and more about their work and adventures in Antarctica, you won’t be bored.
We often were surprised with bbq’s outside and fun activities where we could all hang out and get to know each other, really making it feel like you weren’t alone.
Because you’re in a confined space and all connected over a mutual love of penguins, nature, adventure and travel, it’s very easy to meet new people on board as a solo traveler.
Many of us share rooms with strangers, and I’m still great friends with my bunkmate, who I’d stay up late every night with reminiscing over the day to dance marathons. In the beginning I would recap the best bits of Shackleton’s Endurance to her from the bottom bunk as I plowed my way through it “can you believe they ate baby emperor penguins?!” and we would sometimes get dressed up and put on lipstick and then go take ourselves on a date to the bar and dinner.
It was awesome!
Additionally, Quark offers lots of activities, events and fun surprises to guests where you can meet new people. And with free seating in the dining room, I often made a point to sit alone at a table, just to see who would join me and chat.
Once you make your first landings on the Falklands and South Georgia, you’ll notice you’re bonding with passengers over truly unique moments. Once your groups get to land, everyone disperses around so often you’ll find yourself observing something remarkable next to a stranger. Before South Georgia most ships will also call into the Falkland Islands, another incredible conglomerate of islands, a British Overseas Territory home to a few thousand hardy souls and lots of birds.
From sitting down on the rocks as a horde of penguins waddle pass and turning to each other to say, “wow, did you see that?” to raising a toast to the legendary Shackleton over his grave, the remarkable moments you’ll witness together will make memories that will last forever.
After all, there is nothing quite so powerful as a shared moment in an extraordinary place.
Solo travel is an incredibly rewarding way to travel and experience the world, offering you all new insights and views into a particular destination; a Quark Expeditions trip to South Georgia and the Falklands is the perfect place for solo travelers, because you can have the best of both worlds.
You have a whole new group of like minded friends on board with you, but you also have the freedom to wander and explore at your own pace too.
From the great people you’ll meet to hanging out with the expedition team to discovering things about yourself you didn’t know about before, solo travel on South Georgia is a guaranteed phenomenal experience for the intrepid traveler.
There are no shortage of new friends on board an adventure to the subantarctic. I have found over the years when you travel solo you often will meet more people; there is something more open and easy about approaching others when you’re alone.
I’d often hang out with the expedition team (who were very patient haha), ask them questions and encourage them to share some of their incredible stories, many of whom have spent seasons and seasons in some of the most wild polar places on earth.
There was a solid group of about a dozen of us solo travelers or young couple and we were always hanging out, commandeering the biggest table in the dining hall at breakfasts and running ridiculous games and pranks in the evenings and even making a bit of mischief.
Did I drunkenly steal a guide’s radio on the dance floor on the last night? Maybe. Was there a bit of midnight streaking around the deck of the ship one night that led the Russian Captain to waking up the expedition leader to send us back to bed? Perhaps. Did we leave each other all anonymous kind notes and cards in each other’s elaborately decorated vomit bags? Sure did.
All in good fun, guys.
The best part is that we are all still good friends, have a somewhat lively Facebook chat and are all meeting up in Uganda in June for our friend’s charity!
As a solo traveler on South Georgia and the Falklands, there’s also heaps of alone time too. I often found myself wandering to the edges of the designated landing sites all by myself. I really enjoyed the opportunity to sit down and observe nature. I do love my on company.
These islands are home to many amazing bird colonies; if you sit down quietly and just watch them, they will often do some spectacular things.
South Georgia and the Falklands are the kinds of places that unifies travelers; everyone shares the same joy and excitement and love of nature and adventure.
Because the nature of the expedition brings people together, especially if you are a solo traveler, there is still profound wonders and experiences here for you. From walking in the footsteps of the shared explorers to narrating your own unique moment on land over lunch back on the ship, solo travel in South Georgia and the Falklands is a great way to experience this incredible corner of the world.
Would you go on a solo adventure to the Antarctic? Have any tips to share? Spill
Many thanks to Quark Expeditions for helping get me to South Georgia and the Falklands. Like always, I’m keeping it real, all opinions are my own, like you could expect less from me!

Auld Reekie
Hi from Auld Reekie or to use its more polite name, Edinburgh. I post this while dining in the Tower restaurant that sits atop of the National Museum of Scotland. The food here is splendid, and the views over Edinburgh to the castle are a wonder. Well, they would be if this was a clear sunny evening. It’s not. It's grey and wet. I am in Scotland after all. Never mind. The fact I am in Edinburgh, enjoying some great food and looking forward to tomorrow’s activities is my ‘positive’ this week. I have visited Edinburgh many, many times over the years. Not sure how old I was the first time, but I have a photograph of me at a very young age sitting on Mons Meg (I will leave you to Google that), and also a picture of me looking somewhat wary of an Emperor Penguin in Edinburgh Zoo. I was a small child and the Penguin, big enough to look me in the eye. I also recall being both fascinated and captivated by what I saw as the magic of the camera obscura. It may have been simpler times in the late 50s, but it was good to see through FB that my grandchildren on a recent visit here seemed to enjoy the camera obscura too. As well as many leisure trips to Edinburgh, for a few years through the mid-nineties, I was a frequent visitor to an office for which I had responsibility. Overall, therefore, it’s a city I know well although it’s been a few years since my last visit. Tomorrow’s activities include a personal tour of the Scottish Parliament, and in the evening it's something from my Bucket List. My first visit to the Tattoo. In between, it will be mixing in the atmosphere of the Edinburgh festival and to see a few sights. There may even be a wee dram or two sampled along the way. PS best pub advert of the day, "why not try our haggis balls in beer batter!" .... ummm maybe not
