BOTD: Emperor Goose
Tumblr media
Photo: Thorsten Hackbarth
"This tidewater goose of the Bering Sea region seems less wary than most other geese. Uncommon and localized, it ordinarily migrates only short distances, from the Alaskan and Siberian tundra to the Aleutian chain; only a few stragglers are seen south of Alaska. Generally does not mix with other geese, and usually travels in small groups, although large numbers may concentrate at a few key spots in migration and winter."

Third Place Final

Hooded Mergansers nest in trees cavities, and their nest sites can be up to 27 metres or 90 feet off the ground, though they are typically somewhat lower down. Brood parasitism, the practice of female birds laying their eggs in the nests of other females, is common in Hooded Mergansers as in many other duck species. As a result, while Hooded Mergansers typically lay 5-13 eggs, nest may sometimes contain twice that many eggs, or more! Ducklings are dark brown with lighter brown cheeks and bellies. They have very rounded heads and slender, slightly hooked bills.
Emperor Geese are ground-nesting birds and, within the North American portion of their range, nest exclusively in Alaska. While all species of geese, ducks, and swans have “precocial young,” meaning the young are relatively well-developed and capable at the time of hatching, Emperor Geese take this a step further. The goslings leave the nest within just a few hours of hours of hatching and are ready to begin foraging for food. Goslings are grey all over with stubby black bills.

adult cry
“Far less noisy is the Emperor Goose, whose adult cry is an infrequent “Kla-ha, kla-ha.”

Casually looking up late 18th century paintings for a personal project and found out that Archduchess Maria Christina the two had a romantic and most likely sexual affair with her sister in law Isabella of Parma. why were the habsburgs so iconic and insufferable, oh my GOD.

birding is so great, someone will post "hey i was hanging out in the bushes behind this country-ass casino parking lot and saw a Harris's hawk, seems a lil weird, also there was a bell and leather tether attached to its legs, so... anyone missing one"
and within an hour the Voltron of every falconer in the region descends into this country-ass parking lot to retrieve their bro's Wayward Son

The Common Merganser is a cavity-nesting duck and, like other merganser species, tends to build its nests at impressive heights. Common Mergansers sometimes select nesting cavities as high as 30.5 metres or 100 feet off the ground! The ducklings leave the nest within a couple of days of hatching and while they can swim on their own, it is very common to see females carrying their ducklings on their backs.
Emperor Geese are ground-nesting birds and, within the North American portion of their range, nest exclusively in Alaska. While all species of geese, ducks, and swans have “precocial young,” meaning the young are relatively well-developed and capable at the time of hatching, Emperor Geese take this a step further. this sitcom that is playing on the tv (I'm watching youtube and only vaguely listening, it makes me feel less anxious) is doing an episode where the generic housewife's ex boyfriend is mentioned. nothing in particular except for the fact that his name is Chad and he wrote her poetry about her eyes (so the husband writes poetry about her ears or smth idk). whatever but my point is that now I'm imagining this guy as the himbo from emperor's new groove and keep snorting as I laugh about it
