Establishing and maintaining strong social bonds are vital for any age group, more so for the elderly. There is a paradigm shift toward senior care that focuses on engagement and socialization rather than only on medical attention. More than providing care comfortably in their homes, service providers concentrate on making seniors a part of a community. Home care in Baltimore, Maryland, has seen major strides in this context.

“[Gay physique artist George Quaintance’s] isolation pushed him to read history, and his imagination allowed him to identify with the characters and events he found there. ‘I came to feel and to know all the past great events and the many lives I was sure I was mixed up with in some way through a thousand years of History.’ He wasn’t sure if this understanding came from his books, his dreams, or even what he believed to be his former lives. Whatever its source, he felt that we all have ‘a background of knowledge that has nothing to do with our parents or our direct ancestry.’ Although Quaintance’s understanding verged on the paranormal, he was describing a sense of an imagined common cultural past, one not conveyed by one’s immediate family. It was a vision in harmony with the mission of the [physique pictorial] Grecian Guild, which also posited a collective, imaged past distinct from one’s biological ancestry. But rather than rely on scholarly argument or historical exegesis, Quaintance felt a visceral commonality with the past.”
David K. Johnson, Buying Gay
#queer history#the firebending masters#while there is (as with all things) a danger with this approach to historical identification#wherein one claims exceptionalism through random cultural legacy#there is also a way in which it can be used empathetically#especially in a queer manner#whereby a narrative of linear and biological progression are replaced by an approach that’s more accepting and poetic/spiritual

I have to do a presentation on three people I think are good leaders and I’m so tempted to write about Keeho, you don’t even know
#I kinda want to write about the way he uses a more traditionally feminine approach to leadership#and how he frequently complements the members in awkward or unpleasant situations#and that he’s very communicative and empathetic#but if I’ll actually have to present it I’d have to do it in front of 40 year olds#and I don’t know if I want to take the risk of talking about kpop in front of them lmao

i really like ericka and wolf's interactions in the pilot. and honestly just generally wolf's interactions with the interns
#brilliant minds#unpopular opinion: the romance aspect is so far the least interesting aspect of the show to me. by far.#particularly dr wolf and nichols . sorry. i am not that invested#i love me some gay ships but i'm just not vibing with it for some reason#kinda liked the cute principal but wasn't mega invested either#really i like oliver's interactions with dr pierce most#and the interns#and his mom is.... well she's certainly interesting!#dr wolf is of course my favorite though#cmon hes zachary quinto. he's gay. he's incredibly kind and empathetic. he even has mommy issues! how could i resist#anyway as i was saying#like the bit in the parking lot where ericka approaches him and hes like ............. and she ahs to introduce herself again#and he gives this little lost Totally Not Panicking look past her to the others almost like. just. a nervous little mouse#and she seems to read the issue and slowly introduces the others with like#confusion/curiosity but not really judgment#idk man#oliver wolf#grembospeak#like she GETS it like when she defends wolf and their case#she GETS it#she IS the real quarterback#she's my second favorite character and it's a close second#*to be clear when i say im enjoying these interactions i dont mean in a shippy way

Here we are now; entertain us
#kinda realizing that one's approach to this whole life thing is a lil sociopathic#one's ok with most of it but one wants to be more empathetic towards other humans

watching this clip again and thinking about girlhood and reflection and time and gender roles. like, i see my 7-year old niece, and it's gut-wrenching to watch her be pushed into the same eldest-daughter patterns of performance and forced perfection that i was as a kid, knowing what waits for her and yet not being able to save her.
#as a kid/teen i was forced into perfection -- top grades. constantly performing. constantly being responsible. no fuck ups EVER.#ALWAYS empathetic. always compassionate. always having to regulate my emotions when adults around me exploded in fury.#i could go on. but all this screwed with my self-perception and sense of self-worth + self-esteem for literal DECADES#so it's just absolutely gut-wrenching to see those same patterns played out again and again and again#and i don't know how to fix it#does this make sense? i'm rambling again. it's late and i'm tired but god is girlhood so heavy#disclaimer: i'm approaching this as a white middle class person in the global north so my perception is influenced by those privileges#experiences of girlhood are affected by intersecting identities of race/class/etc. so my pov is very limited in that regard#on girlhood#feminism

i kind of have a bit of beef w/ that therapy speak article though implying that choosing to cut someone off for your mental health is always a shitty thing to do in the opening. and honestly like 95% of the time if someone is complaining about how theyre mad about someone 'selfishly' cutting them off its a BIG RED FLAG
#like. listen. i get it its a horrible thing to be ghosted or cut off by someone it SUCKS#but there is an empathetic approach to that. you know like you still have to be a normal person who respects other peoples fuckin boundarie

i always appreciate how clearly you lay out your thoughts, even if i don't agree with them. you're a very interesting person to follow, and i enjoy seeing you on my dash, even if what you post may be unhinged
im really glad you appreciate it, thank you so much for this ask! i always try to explain my thought process as thoroughly as possible, but i often feel like i don't do a great job of that, so this means a lot to hear. i hope i can continue to further enrich your dash experience 🙏
#ultimately the person i want to be approaches everything without judgement and with an empathetic rational mind to make sense of things#i definitely fail at that on many occasions right now but i really am working on becoming a clear lucid reasonable person.

if u finish reading the catcher in the rye and walk away going “ugh holden caulfield is such a spoiled rich kid” i am going to scream so loud into your face that your eardrums explode
#did you read the fucking book#sorry i just cried over holden caulfield in real life and im making myself angry#its just so upsetting to me how a so clearly empathetic traumatized abused kid who is so lost and overwhelmed by life gets so little#sympathy from most audiences#people want to approach it with the mindset that holden caulfield is acting like hes the saddest worst off person on the planet#and they judge the book by saying his position isnt the lowest on the totem pole so his complaints are invalid and not worth anyones time#and thats not... the point... of the book.......#holden is supposed to represent basically young men with ptsd who have no idea how to process their trauma or emotions#people with trauma who act in self destructive ways because theyre suicidal and lost#people who have been hurt so badly that the thought of others losing their innocence is enough to drive them to tears#holdens dream is to keep others from experiencing the hurt he feels#he fumbles his way through life because he doesnt think hes worth anything#hes such a deeply empathetic character and i just. GRAAHH.......

probably shouldn't be reading about Doctor Faustus and religious trauma at 1 am but here's some good quotes: the top one is from top from Mark James Richard Scott, "'That’s hard': Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus and the Trauma of Reprobation" (Early Theatre 23.2, 9-20) and the bottom one is from David Bevington's intro to the play in the Norton Anthology of Renaissance Drama.
#doctor faustus#hot faust summer#i studied the play with bevington as a spiritually struggling 22-year-old#his empathetic approach to it was really meaningful to me#the scott article basically argues#marlowe's play seems to be set in a calvinist universe but from the perspective that that sucks#and that maybe some people just being left out of salvation makes sense from the perspective of god#but makes no sense at all on the ground#so the other point is that the play offered people an opportunity to sort of confront their own doubts in a safe environment#marlowe's faustus doesn't really do much that's all that bad in terms of his interactions with the world#it's entirely about his lack of faith#he doesn't have it because he was never given the capacity for it#(contends this piece anyway)#like he's absolutely an arrogant shit with a juvenile sense of humor but#his desire for power is much more expansive than the things he actually does with it when he has it#he does not create the level of collateral damage that goethe's does#and the feeling of 'what if my emptiness and lack of faith is a sign that god has rejected me before i was even born' is sheer horror#and one i have experienced#anyway i get you johann buddy

Ah man, I hate asylum episodes.
Human cruelty gets to me way more than monsters. And asylums have uh. No shortage of the former!
Plus you rarely escape without horrifying dehumanizing depictions of mental illness so. Good fun all round
#spn watch#1x10#asylum#I don't trust supernatural an inch#but it does tend to take a basically empathetic approach#to ghosts#in that if they weren't actively horrible in life#they're not really judged for the trauma-driven actions after death#so we'll see what approach it takes with this#could go either way
