The complete dynamic between Al Haitham and Kaveh (an overthinker's analysis)

So this has been bouncing around in my head for the past few months and I'm going to try and condense it into this post to get it out of my system. Basically these are the parallel themes or principles that I've seen between Al Haitham and Kaveh since they released. Now with some pictures.

1. Subjective versus objective

Kaveh is one to value the subjective, hence favoring art which is the expression of the individual even if it's the expression of his client's wishes, and will often overextend his empathy to inanimate objects like Merahk, animals, etc. Al Haitham on the other hand is more focused on objective fact that isn't malleable or sympathetic to subjective whims, he takes comfort in the stability of knowledge and that all it takes is more learning to solve problems, and considers a lot of subjective things like emotions to be 'noisy'.

2. External vs Internal perspective

Kaveh prioritizes the perspectives of others over his own as the roots from which his understanding grows, while Al Haitham prioritizes his own perspective over others'. This is why Kaveh comes off as empathetic and sentimental and maybe even naive on the surface even if he's highly intelligent, he chooses to take the more alturistic route on purpose, just like Al Haitham chooses the individualistic route even if it makes him more outwardly selfish and callous, has the potential to isolate him and has made him more difficult to understand, the important part here is that they're exercising the method that they concluded was best to realize their interests. For Al Haitham society begins with the individual (himself), while for Kaveh it begins with the collective, and so their respective truths align accordingly. While Kaveh prioritizes responsibility, Al Haitham prioritizes his personal boundaries. Also, while Al Haitham perceives external perspectives as 'noise', Kaveh uses them to actively shape his understanding.

3. Done versus perfect

Kaveh approaches the world as he'd like it to be, based on its potential, while Al Haitham approaches the world as it is. So Kaveh tends to lean into perfectionism and ideals while Al Haitham leans into efficiency and solutions. This is why Kaveh tends to overextend himself, not only does he think that his projects should be the best they could possibly be, but he also thinks the same about himself, holding himself to perfectionist standards. Meanwhile Al Haitham comes off as doing the bare minimum, sometimes even less, because he believes that as long as something meets the 'done' requirements, any extra effort wastes precious energy, time and resources.

4. Different kinds of evolution (adapting/growing versus navigating/surviving)

I think this is where the most contention happens between them, both Al Haitham and Kaveh were faced with circumstances that forced them to adapt (no family and barely any support at a young age, being unique thinkers who are difficult to understand by the average person).

They also both, early on, chose to carve out unique paths for themselves, with belonging being the trade-off. However, while Al Haitham leaned into maintaining himself as he was, finding a niche in which he was comfortable, Kaveh tried to adapt and conform as much as he could while maintaining his core. Think of it like compromising as much as you can to fit in versus refusing to change in exchange for fitting in.

Al Haitham thus sees Kaveh giving away something precious in return for acceptance from people who don't even understand or value him, while Kaveh sees Al Haitham as simply refusing to try to reach an understanding and so find the support and connection he needs. Neither of them is completely correct about the other, and this is what created the circumstances for their fallout. Because they were shaped mainly by their circumstances and did what they had to do to make it out of their difficult circumstances with their 'selves' intact. They evolved differently and thus have very different interpretations of resilience and growth.

5. Openness vs reservedness

This is a small section that ties into the previous one, but basically Kaveh wears his heart on his sleeve, often having a hard time keeping secrets, while Al Haitham is more protective of his, even going so far as avoiding vulnerability by deflecting when people try to frame the conversation in a way that he needs to be forthcoming with personal details. Don't get me wrong, they both struggle with vulnerability, but Kaveh wants to be understood, almost desperately, while Al Haitham wants to be as invisible as possible and would rather not be percieved.

6. Study vs Mastery

This is kind of a minor one but the way they process information is interesting, with Kaveh leaning more into practice and mastery of a craft while Al Haitham seems to lean more into the accumulation in knowledge and closing any gaps in his database.

7. Structural thinking vs dynamic thinking

This is a little difficult to explain and gets into headcanon territory but basically Al Haitham prefers to break things down into components and then work through the pieces systematically while Kaveh likes jumping from point to point, like traversing a flexible web of ideas or connecting stray dots. It's why Al Haitham is better at fact checking, prefers consistency and is resistant to wild ideas, while Kaveh is more creative and prone to unique and far reaching ideas. It's also why their conversations usually involve Kaveh coming off as an overthinker while Al Haitham grounds his train of thought. Imo they're both overthinkers Al Haitham is just systematic and quiet about it.

8. The past vs the future

This is an overarching theme in Sumeru but dreams, memories, and the connections between them as well as how shared experiences reinforce them are big themes even with these two. Kaveh wants to be very future oriented based on his dialogue but you can also see the past weighing him down, heavily influencing his decisions, while Al Haitham is very pragmatic and averse to thinking too big about the future, wanting a peaceful and free life, but even this was sparked by his grandmother's wish, who in a way set him free from carrying through on a dream tied to external expectations or his family's legacy. Too add, he is close to Kaveh and the gang whether he likes it or not precisely because of their shared past, Kaveh is his memory, and he ends up living in their 'dream house', he is still affected by those thread like connections that come with interacting with others and living in community.

9. Risk vs certainty

Another small one but Kaveh is more likely to make a decision based on the potential outcome than what is right in front of him like Al Haitham. This also ties back into seeing things for their potential versus how they are, with Kaveh preferring to work based on the ideal potential of something versus the factual outcome that Al Haitham prefers.

10. Hope(dreams) vs evidence(memory)

This one is speculation and might also be another reason why Kaveh leans into more speculative territory while Al Haitham prefers fact. Kaveh probably only had his dream to hold onto at his lowest point while for Al Haitham structure and evidence have always been available to him (his grandmother was a steady presence who reassured him on being himself while Kaveh was abandoned with little beyond the guilt-laced memories of his father). So for example Kaveh's projects rely on him having and holding onto a vision that he eventually fulfills, while Al Haitham documents what's already been done and established as the Scribe. This ties into Kaveh seeing himself and the world based on potential while Al Haitham prefers seeing things as they are. However Al Haitham ends up respecting Kaveh because he always follows through on his dreams while Kaveh begrudgingly accepts that Al Haitham is far more consistent due to working within realistic boundaries.

My Conclusions

1. They're both self contradictory

The reason people find the two to be confusing is because their characterization is intentionally misleading, in line with the theme of Sumeru where characters turn out to be more than their tropes once you dig a little deeper. And this is exemplified by how they also misunderstand each other when they were younger and inexperienced, hence their fallout.

A really good example is how Al Haitham believes that it's better for people to be individuals (find their own path to belonging with their sense of self intact) rather than conform or force themselves into systems that won't accomodate or appreciate them, however he just happens to fit neatly into the structures of the Akademiya, he's very compatible with how the Akademiya works, something that's not only rare but inaccessible to most people of Sumeru.

Kaveh on the other hand believes that systems should change to accommodate everyone, and that people should try to meet their potential despite the obstacles, and yet is in the one nation where his dream, his ideal, becomes an impossible task, materially but also systemically. His talents aren't appreciated by the institution that's in charge, even after proving it (and above and beyond that), and after years of putting in the extra effort to appeal to the Akademiya and pull his Darshan out of the dark.

The point of their dynamic is not that either one or both are right, it's that they grow even more through their connection and understanding the other's perspective, which is why Al Haitham takes Kaveh in and indulges his whims somewhat, or in the archon quest when he offers himself up as hostage, even if he knows it'll add more 'noise' to his life, something he explicitly avoided as part of his purpose, and why Kaveh didn't accept to continue the utopian-esque research of Sachin even if it would give him a chance to continue chasing his ideals. They were mirroring each other in action.

2. How they mirror each other

Basically they are both unique to the world, and neglected by the world (in different ways but especially in terms of understanding), and as such needed an equally unique person to help them further deepen their understanding of themselves and their world (inner and external), they also both share many core experiences and thus perspectives on a lot because of their time together at the Akademiya, and as such, their relationship is the thing with the most potential for them to both grow/evolve further. They not only understand each others quirks, routines, and flaws, but also gaps in knowledge and experiences, which is invaluable for a scholar.

So with Al Haitham, Kaveh is probably the only person who is truly empathetic towards him, who can correctly deduce on the roots of his behavior, and also anticipate his needs, and thus Kaveh is the only one who can, for example, give meaningful support and company, as well as a controlled environment to learn about others without conventional and tedious socializing. Kaveh is the reason Al Haitham got leftovers even though he forgot there was a meetup, and the reason Al Haitham now has friends to get drinks and play cards with.

With Kaveh, Al Haitham's self reliance and individualism gives him no room to empathize beyond what's necessary, and so Kaveh is forced to just exist and look inward to his own wants and needs, and then voice them, instead of distracting himself with the needs and wants of the people and institutions around him. He's also a stable anchor for Kaveh, both as a consistent and stable presence in his life, as well as the grounded voice to balance out his dreaming. Al Haitham makes space in their shared home for Kaveh to rest and be himself beyond his burdens.

3. Why Nahida prefers Kaveh's perspective but Al Haitham becomes Grand Sage

Honestly I don't know for sure. My speculation is that Nahida and Kaveh both have great potential for growth as well as the desire to fulfill their dreams, they also share the desire to understand the perspectives of others, exercise empathy that is. However this doesn't apply to when the Akademiya needed a new Grand Sage, a period of instability that needed discernment, efficiency and results, after which it can go back to dreaming about the future.

Well, it’s…. Complicated. Their personalities are the same, but every dorm’s dynamic is thrown on its head-

In Heartslabyul, nobody fears or respects Riddle, they fear Trey. They think Riddle desperately needs to grow a spine and not be such a pushover to his own Vice, Ace especially doesn’t appreciate his seniors. Deuce feels empathetic towards Riddle, wondering how he and Trey got the way they are now.

In Savanaclaw, Jack has a weaker initial impression of Leona, but grows to respect his Housewarden as he gets to know him more. Ruggie however? Absolutely shameful, always sleeps, sherks responsibilities, is rude and kinda mean- you get the point. Though of course, a flawed character only means room for character development (and angst).

Epel didn’t want to get put in Pomefiore. At all. He heard that the Housewarden there was an absolute weirdo, and he ain’t some dainty pretty boy! He is weirded out by Vil initially, but Vil’s soft approach is surprisingly effective on Epel. Rook on the other hand thinks their little country bumpkin should be treated with strictness and pressure, which Epel does not like the prospect of either. He actually grows pretty fond of Vil over time.

In Diasomnia Sebek is still impressed by Malleus, because of his strict, intimidating aura and regal manners, but when his princely seriousness just… evaporates, and a cheeky, warm and playful guy breaks through, Sebek tends to have a hard time adjusting his own behavior. He obviously respects Lilia too, but he’s honestly a bit scared of the man.

I will probably elaborate on this further when I have more time, but this is the basic gist of things. Character dynamics are some of my favorite things to write, so thanks for the question!

Last reblog had a lot of fascinating takes on the Batfam’s stances towards killing across the board. I particularly loved the bits about Cassandra’s perfectionism playing into her own stance against killing....the distinction where she’s like ‘I can understand someone else killing in self-defense, but I don’t know how not to hold myself to a standard that insists I could have found another way.’ 

I also really like the bit about juxtaposing Dick’s anti-killing vehemence in NTT versus his more varied approach to it in later years...especially when paired with Tim’s early convictions around killing. 

I think particularly with really old, long-established characters, we have a tendency to pick and choose with a lot of history in terms of being like.....this story contradicts this one which makes this character’s take here OOC or inconsistent with prior characterization....which is often true! BUT if we fall back on that all the time, we run the risk of not letting long-existing characters have room to actually evolve and grow.

And I actually think the link between Dick in NTT versus his views later in life can be perfectly in character, especially using Tim as a comparison point like in that post. Because we tend to overlook the basic fact that Dick was young in NTT comparative to later Nightwing solo runs. His views on killing are inevitably going to be a large part of breaking away from Bruce and defining his own worldviews for himself. Its the difference between parroting learned dogma and learning what does and doesn’t work for yourself.

Personally, I lean towards the take that Dick raises the issue of ‘is killing right or wrong, discuss’ as little as he does in later runs pre-Flashpoint, because I like to interpret that as he’s not inconsistent there so much as he’s figured out by that point that he just flat out doesn’t have the answers there. He’s still working it out for himself. It doesn’t mean that he’s not going to have opinions about it, and even hypocritical ones at times, but that’s also due to the fact that many times this only comes up in highly charged emotional situations where no one’s taking the time to step back a beat and go wait, what do I really THINK about this versus what am I currently FEELING about this.

And as I’ve said many times before, I think the Blockbuster issue AND the Joker one are massively complicated by the fact that one of the bigger ways I think Dick is comparable to Cass and where they overlap and have a lot of untapped potential to bond over or y’know, recognition of the self through the other, lol - is that Dick, like Cass, has never mastered how NOT to hold himself to impossible standards. It would have been totally different if it had been someone else killing the Joker or someone killing Blockbuster for their own reasons unrelated to him....but with he himself being central to all that, he doesn’t know how to separate himself and the expectations instilled in him FOR himself....enough to view those situations through the same lens he views the morality of killing as an ideological question if he’s not part of the equation. (Cass and Dick as regularly described as among the most empathetic characters in the Bat franchise, but both equally unwilling to ever extend that same empathy to THEMSELVES: Discuss!)

And I think its an interesting angle to pursue, that for Bruce a lot of the issue is just hard-wired trauma reactions. I think so much of Bruce’s personal morality crystallized around set moments in time, that he doesn’t even recognize how often his views on certain situations go hand in hand with having knee-jerk reactions to those situations unfolding right in front of him, period. Its always funny to me (not hahaha, just, y’know, funny) how as much as his kids are among the first to criticize Bruce as not being all-knowing or perfect, they’re also among the first to fall into the trap of not realizing when they DO have Bruce on a pedestal in their mind. 

It could definitely be argued that there’s a dissonance involved, where many of his kids push back against certain ideas he instilled in them or things he taught them that they disagree with later in life.....where their innate assumption is that Bruce himself was operating from like....an emotionally objective plateau when he taught them or passed down these ideas in the first place. As opposed to recognizing that some of them aren’t Bruce being hypocritical so much as just being....irrational. Not in a pejorative way, but just in terms of acknowledging how much of an unreliable narrator he can be due to his own trauma, his own rigid and impossible self-expectations for himself, etc.

But of course this overlooks that a basic staple of Bruce’s interactions with others is he over-compensates and covers up his own insecurities or doubts or anywhere he second-guesses himself, by like, doubling down on his convictions or at least the parts he DOES feel sure about. So the very fact that Bruce seemed so unwavering in his stance about something when instilling an idea or take on something in various of his kids.....doesn’t actually guarantee that Bruce WAS as sure about that thing as he seemed at the time, just convinced he was the Adult, the Teacher, the one who was SUPPOSED to have the answers, so he had to present himself as such WHILE passing down this perspective.

And yet....its not going to look that way to his kids, so....enter their own conviction that Bruce could never understand or empathize with them changing their minds about these particular things or having their own doubts....thus leading them to not come to him with their doubts or questions about the rigidity of this particular idea or perspective....at least not UNTIL they’ve already firmly made up their own minds about their new perspective on that thing, at which point Bruce is like wait where is this coming from, when they hit him with a complete 180 about something he THOUGHT they were on the same page about, as far as he knew the last time it came up. 

And thus: conflict.

Idk idk idk, my thoughts are all over the place with all of this and the other kids as well, but the thoughts, they definitely are percolating.

The T.U.A

The company both of these guys work at! Run by a slightly eccentric cryptid of a British man, their main goal is to archive a usable log of multiverse and general map of everyone and everything! Though the owner does tend of offer people "deals" in order to gain more power in the multiverse. As his presence could be considered quite "limited". from loans, to sending his men out on some kind of epic journey to acquire a magical artifact they do it all!

Sable (the spikey one ye-haw)

He's a certified cool guy wannabe, only sometimes actually delivering on this desire. of course only to immediately ruin the moment. ( From either being too nice to seem "badass" freaking out over how cool he looked. ) besides all of this sable remains one of the more sensible of his fellow employees

Impressions of this man are split into the dependence of whether or not he's working. Sable tends to develop a serious and focused front. This mainly being from the fact that sables precious attempts at a casual attitude to his work the employee accompanying him horrifically died! (Probably why he's afraid of the actual dark :D )

Sables been working at the T.U.A for approximately 5 years at this point. He's mainly sent out for things like item/debt collection, he also normally finds himself paired with clay. Which works quite well with Clay's current job of field data collector.

Clay (sans)

Clay could be considered quite a recent person, having the mental age of someone in their mid 20s but only really gaining sentience 5 years ago. As in every way he could be considered an enchanted statue.

Clay's creator actually gave him away to the company he currently works at, in order to settle a large debt they had amassed. The owner of the T.UA (who has a very strong investment in his treatment of employees and workers) hated the fact that he was basically a servant and immediately gave him the option to leave. (he did not, but now he gets dental care!)

Overall clay is described as a very chipper, empathetic and tone deaf. constantly possessing an unwavering peppy approach to the most inappropriate of situations. clay tends to take on tasks or any kind of favor from his coworkers as possible to feel a sense of usefulness. ( i guess somethings left over from before he started working here.)

-> [ While friendly and kind himself, your sweetness absolutely melts him. ] Bokuto is very bombastic and could often be described as being “too much” - because he can definitely be a bit (or even VERY) overwhelming for some. And his chipper demeanor isn’t always “soft and sweet” like yours is, and this is something that even he can pick up on. But he loves it! He loves how genuinely sweet and feminine you are on the inside, and your personality compliments his own very well. His teammates grumble about how sickly sweet and cute you two are. As a side note, perhaps unsurprisingly, Bokuto really had no qualms about approaching you. He paid absolutely no heed to your RBF, probably hadn’t listened much to the opinions of people who didn’t know you well and assumed you were on the meaner side.

-> [ He would have an absolute blast roller skating with you. ] It does take him a bit to get the hang of it, but he’s athletic, eager to learn, and quick to learn to boot. When he learned that roller skating was a big interest of yours, he practically begged you to take him with you the next time you went skating and show him the ropes. Teaching him how to roller skate was quite fun for you - he’s really goofy and funny, with big reactions any time he slips up or succeeds in one of the basics. And then, once he gets the hang of things, he loves pushing himself and trying to keep up with you. Bokuto is more likely to get hurt than you are in those first few weeks when he starts learning, but in the event that you do get a bit bruised or scraped up, he is determined to tend to your injuries.

-> [ Bokuto thinks you’d be great at teaching! ] Building off the previous point - he first realizes you have a talent for teaching when you were helping him learn how to roller skate. You’re patient, smart, able to explain things in different ways if someone doesn’t quite understand. He probably made an offhand comment when you were helping him (“you’d be a good teacher, you know?”) and if you mentioned that being a teacher has always been your dream job, he would immediately light up. Though he can be a bit dense or simple-minded at times, he really can be a good judge of character. On a side note, study dates are probably pretty common for you two. Bokuto can have a really hard time with academics, especially the act of just sitting down and actually studying, so you two are able to hold each other accountable and help each other out.

-> [ Totally jams out to your music. ] Bokuto seems like the type to like a lot of different genres - so long as he can bop his head along or dance to it, he’ll probably like it. So if you ever want to listen to music with him, play it out loud, or give him recommendations - go for it! He likes getting a good idea of your taste in music so he can make recommendations in return. One of his favorite things to do is to put some music on and dance around and just be silly with you. It’s fun, you can show off some of your moves, and it’s a good way to release a bit of energy (considering Bokuto has more than enough of that as it is). Of course, singing along while you dance around to some pop song only makes sense, too. You can hold a tune just fine, but Bokuto might not be the prettiest singer (and you two have so much fun regardless).

-> [ Sometimes get a little bit chaotic between you two. ] You each have your high-energy moments, short attention spans, and a tendency towards moodiness… so this relationship is not without its ups and downs! You both give the other a bit of grace when it comes to these shared traits of yours, understanding when the other seems to be struggling a bit - and you both offer your own forms of comfort, able to keep the other grounded when needed. BIOGRAPHY 

At the failed Battle of Hogwarts, Harry begged his friends and allies to stand down.  Blaming himself for their losses, he couldn’t stand to see anyone else fall and organized the retreat to safehouses. Utterly devasted by the loss of Hagrid in particular, he felt entirely responsible for the deaths of some of his dearest friends, Professor McGonagall and Mr and Mrs Weasley especially. Having found the bodies of Remus and Tonks he was also desperate to find Teddy Lupin and ensure his safety.

Having retreated to the Order’s first safehouse, Harry remained there for some time, regrouping with Ron and Hermione and looking after Teddy. He was now truly an outcast, but what was worse was feeling responsible for all the deaths, for seeing Voldemort grow stronger and stronger, casting the world into darkness - and knowing it was all because he had failed. He had let down Dumbledore. Sirius. His parents. Everyone who had given their lives for him.

At first the horcux hunt remained his main goal, but soon the horcruxes had to take a lower priority. At that point in the war, they weren’t even keeping even with Voldemort; Death Eater control was total and the Order could no longer play the offensive and go after horcruxes when they were so desperately needed to  try and stop the slaughter. Though Harry was deeply torn, he found it impossible to prioritse some abstract ideal of “the greater good” when there were so many people being murdered.  He decided to ignore Dumbledore’s voice in his head, and the Order switched into prioritising getting Muggles and Muggle-borns out of danger and the horcruxes fell somewhat to the wayside. Harry still doesn't know that he himself is a horcrux, tethering Voldemort to life.

In time, Harry and Ginny would also grow back into their relationship and have children of their own: James, Albus and Lily. Having a family to protect was the source of Harry’s greatest happiness and the very worst of his terror. Every night he struggled to sleep, haunted by the fear that his failures would destroy them and that he would lose his children in this fight, as he has lost almost every person he has ever loved. Not just lost them, had to live with the fact that they died for him. There was a part of him that wanted nothing more than to send them far away from him, where they would be safe from the damage Harry wreaks across the lives of all those he touches. He has always attempted to keep them out of the fight as much as possible. 

Harry’s first kill was on a rescue mission, when he came up against John Dawlish, an Auror that Harry had long disagreed with and despised for his blind loyalty to the Ministry and its worse policies. Harry’d had no other choices in the moment but to send a Killing Curse at Dawlish in order to save the lives of a Muggle family. Knowing Dawlish had turned made it easier - or it would have, except that Harry couldn’t be sure Dawlish hadn’t been placed under the Imperius Curse and now, he would never know. He was also haunted by the Confundus Charm placed on Dawlish by the Order to protect Harry’s escape from Privet Drive, which may have made Dawlish more susceptible to the Imperius. He can never be sure that what he did was the right thing, but it was done, and couldn’t be undone. The family was saved, and if Harry had blood on his hands, had torn apart his soul in the act, it was only going to get worse from here. He accepted that going forwards, there would be no other choice. 

After the first kill, it became easier. At first Harry’s stipulation to the order was to kill only when necessary, when there was no other choice, a rule that also applied to general use of the Unforgivable curses (excepting the Cruciatus), but as the war went on and things became darker, there became less and less choice. They were fighting a war, a war in which Voldemort had total control, and the only way to truly fight back was to kill. It was a burden that Harry would prefer to carry himself, or at least for the older members of the Order. Current orders are that they are to attempt to keep the younger members from having to kill unless absolutely necessary. He usually sends those younger members on defensive rescue missions or to steal supplies, though it’s not always possible.

 Harry is committed full-time to leading the Order, primarily in rescue missions, but the horcrux quest remains on the backburner when possible. He has never given up on the hope of destroying Voldemort once and for all, but there has always been very little chance of doing so when it’s a struggle to even just keep their own people alive.

Just the reason that you are such a friendly and easy going person alone was enough to actually get this friendship started to begin with. Look, the man absolutely cares about anyone and everyone, but showing that love on the outside is a whole different story. He just needs a little help.

What really got this going, to where you two officially became a pair was when he walked in on you baking. It was later in the evening, you had music playing and he couldn't help but to watch as you danced your way through the kitchen throughout the baking process. It was something that he wanted to see more of.

This then starts baking dates, cause he quite likes baking as well. So the both of you are always making something for one another that you both either sit there in the kitchen and eat, or pack it up for each other if it's a more busy day. Absolutely no one touches the little box of sweets that you made for him. He will hold onto that like a vice.

Please read to him. He finds your voice just so soothing and it can be rather crazy around as we have all seen. Bonus points if he gets a cuddle out of you. He will never refuse. But the chances are, between your voice reading to him, him cuddled next to you enough to hear your heartbeat, there is the possibility he will fall asleep. It's just too comfortable.

He does not mind at all if you space out and begin daydreaming again. It's a sign of a creative mind, at least, he thinks so. During one of these times, he actually brought a journal with him. It's a gift just for you. Perhaps you would like a place to write down whatever it is that you day dream about. Your own little dream journal.

Random thing, you mentioned bpd I heard in my abnormal psychology class that a lot of therapists won't treat someone diagnosed with bpd??? It was the teacher who is a grad student studying to be a therapist who said it. And like. I don't understand. They sound like a very in need population who was often abused and there's a whole huge book of treatment resources written by someone with bpd. I've heard they're "hard to treat" and talked about like they're hopeless. but like why be a mental health professional if you don't like mentally ill/different people?

This is also the same professor who insisted trauma is only the few things listed under dsm ptsd definition as traumatic events.. like she said parents getting divorced isn't a traumatic event because you aren't physically in danger... that class really scared me about the mental health field because of all the awful people in it aspiring to be therapists including the teacher.

Ahahaha, what IS it about undergrad abnormal psych professors? Mine said he wouldn't touch clinical practice with a ten-foot pole, and told a story about how once a student told him she had schizophrenia, and he knew that she was lying because obviously nobody with schizophrenia could actually manage to attend university.

(It's seriously untrue. I've had both friends and clients with psychotic disorders who succeeded in university. He was being an ableist bastard. Like, I know psych students can tend to over-identify with a disorder they're studying without actually having it, but that doesn't mean no psych student is ever entirely correct about their deal.)

Okay so, BPD. The thing about BPD is that it requires a special skillset that does not come standard in most clinical training. If a therapist who doesn't have that skillset tries to treat someone with BPD, the therapy will not be very effective and the process will be very frustrating for both them and their client. To be very frank, it's just as true that ordinary therapists are bad at treating BPD and don't like feeling stupid, as it is that people with BPD are hard to treat.

(And training to deal with people with BPD clinically is often not included in grad school education. DBT training is expensive and they won't accept you unless you have an adequate clinical placement.)

Also, part of dealing with BPD in particular is... people with BPD often have trouble seeing authority figures with anything more nuanced than "adoration and compliance" or "fear and loathing". As a therapist, you're signing up as an authority figure. Part of the work means letting your client express all their feelings about you, and helping them work to something more nuanced and sustainable, like, "I am furious and enraged that I'm in pain and I wish my therapist could take that pain away, but I realize that's not within her power. I have to admit that she's not being an evil villain here, so I can feel my resentment but let it go."

Which can be stressful to deal with, as a therapist. You have to live with a lot of hurt and anger and rage headed your way, and keep your perspective. Be empathetic without getting carried away in those emotions. You have to be able to face that pain and say, "I can't take that away. I can only help you learn to bear it."

Basically everyone I know in grad school had a nervous breakdown somewhere along the line because we go to therapist school because we're smart and capable and feel good about helping people, so when we encounter a person we can't help, or are put in situations where we have to stop helping, we tend to have existential crises and end up sobbing in the student lounge about What Am I Even Good For Now. I was lucky because I had a version of that breakdown before I entered grad school, and my therapist warned me to get a new shrink when I moved for my Master's, "Because if you don't need one at the beginning, you'll definitely need one by the end." So I was more equipped to help classmates for whom this was a wholly new experience.

In my opinion, the healthy way to approach the problem of A Person You're Not Good At Helping is to practice humility, set reasonable boundaries, recognize the limits of your competence, and see where you can learn and grow. But many therapists and helping professionals use what I consider to be an unhealthy approach, labelling such clients as "defensive" and "resistant" and "hard to treat" and blaming them for the difficulty.

Which like, I get that "practicing humility" is like "doing exercise", sometimes you're tired and cranky and don't want to go for a run. Sometimes you just want to blame the other person for not accepting your magnanimous help.

Anyway, within the field of mental health psychotherapy, complex trauma is a unique sub-speciality that many therapists don't want to touch at all. I had many classmates say, "Woof, you're into complex trauma? You must be so tough, I could never." 🙄

(Technically I have the ethical obligation to represent my profession in the best possible light to encourage public confidence in the field of psychotherapy. But I think it's not undermining the profession to admit what everyone already knows, which is that some therapists are oblivious assholes who do bad work. I've seen it, I've met them, I want them to piss off forever. Jordan Peterson is a blight to our names and Phil McGraw can go choke.)

So people who are on your wavelength about BPD and trauma and What Therapists Are For are out there. They're just a little rarer than the usual run of therapists. For what it's worth, I've found they cluster more in areas like complex trauma, DBT, Narrative Therapy, and the Hearing Voices Movement. Next year (knock on wood) I'l be going to a conference on the treatment of complex trauma with a friend, and this sounds weird given that it's a weekend all about child maltreatment, but I expect it to be a blast, because I'll get to be among My People, talking about the work that fills our souls.

I really wish that as an undergrad, I'd spent more time hanging out with Social Work students, and going to conferences and trainings. Those are where I met some of the coolest people I really clicked with. And in grad school, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting other people who were a lot like me. Those friendships were especially rewarding because as skilled helpers, we ended up playing a game of Needs Chicken, where each tries hide their own needs and caretake for the other, which finally ended up in a standoff where we had to agree to put down our caretaking skills and just be honest about what we wanted, even if that felt new and scary and raw.

However, I doubt he would even think about settling down somewhere, as the boy is, at his core, a wanderer. He’s very well-liked in all of those places because he has a very helpful nature. Also people tend to see him and instantly decide that he needs a family, so in all four areas, he’s basically got an army of adoptive parents and grandparents. As for where he was born, the would be some generic city in New Mexico that I do not have a name for because. Yeah. Dusty does not consider that to be a home at all, seeing as it’s still where his shitty rich dad who he hasn’t seen in years lives. Actually, he does travel back there at some point in his story (which I will be writing. soon. i’m working on it.) but not for fun ahaha. When it comes to people who make him feel at home, Dusty has no romantic interests, but friend-wise, he has Benny and Arcade. At this point, they’re basically his dads. And yes Benny adopted the kid he shot because I said so. Dusty isn’t quite sure what home means to him, but if he had to put his finger on it, he’d say it’s somewhere he doesn’t feel like he has to run from. Most of his story is about leaving things behind, so finding somewhere he’d want to return to is a good feeling.

Dusty is a very perceptive person. Very little gets past him. This mostly applies to bad things, such as someone about to attack him or a trap hanging right above his head, but it can also apply to good things. He loves seeing that plants still grow in the wasteland, especially flowers, and he has a tendency to point them out wherever he sees them. Flowers were also very important to his mother, so they remind him of her. The idea that good things can still happen and life can still flourish in the Mojave always brings him a bit of hope when he remembers it.

Dusty does feel very deeply, but he is also very emotionally constipated. His thoughts and feelings are kept private for the most part, and he tends to bottle up any kind of strong emotion. Because of that, he struggles a lot with empathizing with people and prefers to take a more logical approach, which isn’t always appreciated. He’ll always be the first to offer support, though, whether that just means sitting there and listening to you or helping you out with things you need done. Dusty also can and will murder anyone who hurts someone he cares about. You said some guy was harassing you? Not anymore.

Personality description:

From his exterior, Alieos seems distant, if not a bit cold. His expression doesn’t change often, leaning more towards stoic or even impassive at any given time. He tends to be more observant of his surroundings and quiet in most situations, only giving input when necessary or when questioned. While he seems hard to approach it’s actually quite the opposite and he has no problem holding a conversation if someone starts it or manages to ask enough questions to keep the flow going.

Contradicting his almost never changing exterior, within he is very tenderhearted, kind, and empathetic to a fault. He is very good at reading peoples moods and, while he is unable to visually express the feelings he has, he is very good at forming the words needed to bring comfort. It could be said he is soothing, much like a comfort person one would turn to when they are feeling down or scared. Background:

Born in the snow a frigid December eve, Alieos was bred as the second child to a loving mother and father, and would be the second oldest of eight children. His home was chilly but it was loving, a place where he often felt safe but still, like many, he longed to see more past their home—further past the stones and greenery that would occasionally change colors as the seasons moved past.

Being the second oldest meant that he had more freedom, but still enough responsibility that he couldn’t truly be himself. A curious and playful, if not mischievous child, Alieos often ventured out on his own or with his siblings play with other children while the elders tended to the forest. While he was still very young when the borders were harder to cross and things within the realms were closed off or withering away, Alieos remembers vaguely that they would gather the eve of the first chill and bring forth wind and frost, creating flurries and snowfall that they would spend extensive amount of time in during the evenings.

While his family and many of the other pixies he lived among had the ability to ease those suffering from sleeplessness, Alieos had garnered a reputation for getting just about anyone to sleep. Nicknamed ‘the one who catches nightmares’, it became a weekly task for the youth to flit from home to home to help young children or the elderly rest once their nightly rituals were over. It put an increased amount of stress upon him, so much so that it eventually messed with his mental stability, unable to sleep for longer then a few hours at a time.

He slowly became withdrawn, quieter even in nightly celebrations under the moon. While his eyes would still sparkle with that same light he couldn’t bring himself to smile past a barely there upturn of the mouth. The change in him made his mother concerned, unsure what to do now that her child was less outgoing and sociable, the gauntness in his face putting her worries at the forefront.

She thought bringing him to meet the humans would help, and it did… for a while. Alieos easily took to them, much like many of their kind did, balancing his unofficial duties back home and time spent among the humans that fascinated him. However, after a period of time it actually worsened his restlessness, with Alieos becoming attached to multiple humans and used his powers, while secretly, to aide them, as well. The stress behind it took a toll as he kept such things to himself. It took him finally snapping and freezing half of his younger sisters body in a blackout rage for his mother to finally seek a true solution.

Once she was sure that he had a safe location to go to while also having access to come back home when necessary, she offered him a chance to leave home to be somewhere that could help him be himself again. For the first time in over a century she saw a spark of life in his eyes, his curious nature taking hold to help him finalize his decision to attend the school in the human realm, a place he already felt comfortable enough being in.

This brought him to Insolitus with the hope that it would help him hone his powers and allow him room to grow while also sating his curiosity for something more. Something that hopefully would return him back to the person he once was.
