Beer and wine “empanadas”, typical from the area around Agost (South of the Valencian Country).

Recipe under the cut!

Ingredients for beer empanadas

For the dough:

2 kg of flour

3 glasses of beer

3 glasses of olive oil

2 envelopes of powder yeast

200 g of butter

A bit of salt

1 egg to paint them

For the stuffed:

2 kg of onion

2 kg of tomato

6 boiled eggs

Canned tuna

Red and green pepper

Ingredients for the wine empanadas

Ingredients for the dough:

1 kg of flour

1 and a half glass of white wine

1 and a half glass of sunflower oil

1 envelope of powdered yeat

50 g of butter

A bit of salt

Preparation (for both)

Put the flour, yeast and a bit of salt in a bowl. Melt the butter in the fire and add the liquid butter to the bowl. Add also the oil, beer/wine, and mix it all.

When the dough is ready, make little balls with it. The size of the balls depends on how big you want the empanadas to be. Spread the dough of every ball on top of a wax paper (this will avoid them getting stuck to the oven tray).

add the stuffed in half of the circle of dough you have spread, and close it with the other half. To avoid the stuffed getting out of the empanada, roll the outside a little bit or pinch it to make both sides mix.

Lastly, pinch with a fork so that air will be able to come out and the empanada won’t explode. Paint the empanadas with egg to make them look more golden.

Oven them at 170ºC for about 25 minutes.

The team was on their way to a designated location that was private so they could discuss the next move. Somehow, Harley managed to get Flag to stop at a local food truck to get food. What a softie.

Your introduction to Harley was, well, memorable to say the least. After making her way into the bus, she smacked Flag with her javelin, tripped over Cleo's leg while she slept, and fell into the seat in front of you. Once again, you were seated on Nanaue with your legs slung over Abner's.

"You guys had a shark and you didn't tell me? How cute!" She fixed her hair before holding her hand out. "Harley Quinn, nice to meetcha!"

You stuck your arm out in an awkward position due to Nanaue and shook her hand. "Mimic, good meeting you too."

"Mimic? What a neat name! What do you do?"

"What the name implies," you said in Harley's voice.

"Neat! Hey, you think you could copy Rick's voice and say somethin' funny?"

"Like what?"

"Hmm... not sure. I'll let you decide."

"Uhh, okay," you thought for a minute. What would you say? When you finally figured it out, you let out a little giggle before clearing your throat.

"Attention everyone, I have an announcement to make," you started. Everyone looked at Rick who wasn't paying attention. "This is long overdue, but Bloodsport, I'm in love with you."

"Hey, man, what the fuck."

Before the joke could continue, Harley, Abner, Nanaue, and eventually you filled the bus with laughter. The rest joined quickly after realizing it was you.

"This is what America's best do for entertainment?"

Cleo smacked Grieves over the back of the head again.

You later made it to the vantage point; it was a couple story building with the roof destroyed. This brings us up to speed.

"Mine were very good. I had chicken."

You and Abner were off to the side still eating. You may have taken an extra one when no one was looking.

Flag wiped his hands on his pants before addressing Grieves. "All right, here's the deal. We fail the mission, you die."

"We find out any information you gave us is false, you die," added Bloodsport.

"If we find out you have any personalized license plates, you die."

"What? Harley, no."

"If you mismatch blacks, you die."

"No."

"If you cough without covering your mouth-"

"Harley," Flag interrupted before turning his attention back to Grieves. "Those last three aren't things. Although, probably don't need to say this, but that isn't an open invitation for you to cough without covering your mouth."

You let out a chuckle as Bloodsport started talking to Grieves.

"All right, we're gonna need you to drive the minibus, with all of us inside, past the guards at the front gate."

"Once through the gate, we'll use you to get through the retinal scanner."

"There are security cameras everywhere," Grieves pointed out.

"They're being dealt with," Ratcatcher II said while petting Sebatian. Flag continued.

"We'll neutralize the soldiers there and enter."

"Once we're inside, we seperate into teams."

"I am walking back and forth," exclaimed Harley.

"Aw come on," Abner whispered from beside you. You look over your shoulder to see him holding an empty empanada bag.

"What, you finish yours?"

"No, Nanaue stole mine while I wasn't looking."

Nanaue was still smacking his mouth before giving you a shrug.

"Here, I grabbed this from the pile when no one was looking." You passed him an empanada that you took out from one of your tactical pockets.

"Oh, thank you," he said while taking it from you.

"No problem."

"Okay," Flag sighed. "You're gonna lead me and Ratcatcher II to Project Starfish."

"I'm going with you 'cause I don't trust this guy."

"No, no, no," Bloodsport told Peacemaker. "You're coming with me. Our munitions expertise are needed to place the explosives, starting at the first floor, going all the way to the top. Once we're clear, we blow the tits off that thing, and go home."

Gaius Grieves had an incredulous look on his face. "This is suicide."

"Well, that's kind of our thing."

"Yeah," Abner said, stepping forward with his empanada in hand. You had to cover your mouth to stop yourself from laughing.

Grieves was silent from that point until he was driving the van. "This is insane."

Everyone stayed quiet as he drove past the gate. Abner, who was laying beside you, let out a heavy sigh of relief in your ear as the van successfully made it past the guards. You smiled over at him as you squeezed his hand.

The rain that just started to pour offered excellent coverage for your team. Everyone quickly double checked themselves and started loading the guns.

"Yeah, no."

Milton had tried taking a rather large gun for himself before Flag confiscated it.

"Maybe stay back, Milton? You know, we could always use a getaway driver," you suggested. Milton gave you a thumbs up as he took a seat.

Opening the door to the van, Harley commented, "I love the rain. It's like angels are splooging all over us." Bloodsport made his way out before the rest of the team followed.

Unceremoniously, Bloodsport started the small battle by shooting a soldier in the eye with his crossbow arm. King Shark, Peacemaker, Bloodsport, and Colonel Flag made quick work of all the enemies as you and the rest of the team ushered Grieves to the front of the building.

"Open it!"

"Why would I do that?"

"Oh, for fuck's sake." Rolling your eyes, you mimicked Gaius Grieves and scanned your eye into the retinal scanner. The door made a satisfying hiss as it unlocked.

"Good job, Mimic," complimented Polka Dot Man as you returned to normal. You smiled in reply.

Not even two seconds later did the rest of the team join you as you shoved Grieves inside. Peacemaker, ever the strategist, destroyed the scanner before joining you.

"Input the emergency code, now!"

The doors shut with another satisfying hiss. Everyone inside made quick work of opening the bags that contained the bombs and distributing them.

"You get a bomb, and you get a bomb, and you-"

"Harley and I will meet you up on the second floor," Bloodsport ordered.

It wasn't until after you placed the bombs in the main room and started dispersing that the soldiers watching the security footage noticed.

"Atención! Atención!"

"Come on, Mimic, you follow me. King Shark and Peacemaker got the first level."

"On it," you yelled as you quickly followed him and the others to the upper levels. It wasn't until you made it to about the sixth floor that reinforcements were coming.

"All right, troops are coming. This floor and then nine floors left. Let's go!"

The room you entered looked like an ordinary office space with cubicles. As you made your way down the main aisle, Polka Dot Man's bag broke which caused the bombs to scatter.

"Aw, fizzle sticks. Hold on-"

Gun fire began raining on you as the soldiers found your location. Everyone dropped low to the ground behind a cubicle. Unfortunately, you were a little too late which allowed a bullet to pierce through your arm.

"FUCK," you yelled as you dropped beside Abner.

Shocked and angered that they hurt you, he quickly released his polka dots onto the soldiers without another thought. As they dropped to the ground, Abner scooped you up beside him to the best of his abilities so that you'd be behind cover. You made a pained sound in protest, but you didn't stop him.

"Does anyone got eyes or ears on any more?"

"They shot (Y/n)!" Abner yelled to Bloodsport.

"Who's (Y/n)?"

"What?!"

"I don't remember any (Y/n)," said Harley.

"Fuck! They've been with us the whole time!"

"Somebody named (Y/n) has been with us the whole time?"

"Yes!"

"I don't think so, I think I would've noticed if somebody named (Y/n) was with us."

Abner gently removed himself from you before standing abruptly. "Are you messing around right now? They've been with us the whole time, and now look at them. They're hurt."

"Abner," you strained while trying to sit up. "It's just a bullet wound, I'll be fine."

Upon hearing your voice, Harley peeked over to look at you. "Oh, Mimic! Well why didn't you say so?" She picked herself up—along with the javelin—before helping you up. Using her to stabilize yourself, you announced that you were going to check on the others that were with Grieves. Turning invisible in front of them, you left.

It took some time to finish bombing the room, but eventually they did it.

"So when did this great love affair happen with Mimic?" Robert asked Abner.

"I liked them from the beginning, okay? I just didn't want to say anything in case-"

It wasn't until you made your way to the lower level that you heard a giant explosion. Off in the distance, you thought you could pleading. Was that Cleo? Picking up the pace you quickly found yourself standing in the presence of Peacemaker aiming his gun down at Ratcatcher II.

"...destroy the hard drive! Why kill me?"

"Because I'm thorough."

Una Prueba de Vida

Now, the topic you’ve all been waiting for…FOOD!

Argentina has many different kinds of foods that are unique and popular that I have never heard of before. One thing that contributes to this is their meal schedule. Breakfast is very small and lunch is typically a little smaller than typical ones back in the U.S. As I’ve mentioned before, they have dinner very late—my homestay usually eats around 9:15-9:30—so in between lunch and dinner there is a snack (like a tea time) called merienda to hold everyone over. In turn, there are many cafes around that people eat at for a quick snack and a lot of their foods consist of little pastries or small bites to eat like empanadas.

One drink that Argentina is very well known for is something called mate (mah-tay). As a part of our program with CEA we had a mate tasting at a restaurant called Los Picasso. Since we were a big group we shared about six or seven cups full of different kinds of mate. Normally people just drink the general kind of mate, but at this restaurant we had a selection of Mates from the company Mate & Co. which had flavors like Tres Mentas, Lemon, Chocolate, etc.

We learned from our guide how to prepare the mate ourselves. For some background, mate comes from a plant called yerba which is grown in certain areas of Argentina and it is harvested and used to create the mate. To prepare it, first you pour the cup full of mate and then shake it to a diagonal angle so we could put the straw in without having to dig through the mate and it also provided an area to pour the hot water. After putting the straw in you would take a thermos of hot water and pour it into the slanted side of the herb where it would soak up starting at the bottom (be careful not to wet the entire top so the mate lasts longer). Mate is kind of like tea in a way that the hot water soaks up the plant and you drink from it, but it is different since it is not in a bag and is prepared differently.

According to our guide, the way mate works is that when there is a group of people the server would prepare the mate and then test the temperature themselves until it was ready to pass on to the first person to their right and they would drink until they passed it back to the server and this process would continue around the circle until someone says “thank you” meaning they do not want anymore. If someone new came, they would get the next cup of mate. Personally I wasn’t a huge fan of mate but apparently it is an acquired taste so maybe one day! (But I’m also not a coffee or tea drinker which doesn’t help.)

People all around Argentina drink mate, we even saw people carrying some on the trails around Iguazu. They have warm water stations for the cause.

They also had a lot of food at the tasting and they had very sweet snacks to our surprise.

Medialunes, panquques, alfajores de dulce de leche, torta frita, and more!

Medialunes are croissant looking pastries that differ in the fact that they have a sweet layer of glaze. Alfajores are like little oreo cookies but the cookie part is more like a powdery sugar cookie and they are filled with dulce de leche. Panqueques are a kind of desert here that I learned about on accident. I thought I was getting a panCAKE, but got a panQUEQUE at a restaurant. They remind me of crepes because they are a thin layer of dough sort of like a crepe or tortilla and they can be filled with things like cream and dulce de leche.

Dulce de leche is also a HUGE Argentinian thing and I love it. Dulce de leche’s consistency is like a midpoint between caramel and peanut butter, not quite dripping but not solid either. It is a hard taste to describe but I would relate it to caramel with a little something extra, maybe more milk? Either way it is amazing and a new favorite dessert flavor of mine.

I’m personally a big cookies n cream flavor girl, but I expanded my horizons for this trip when I went to try ice cream and usually got a form of a dulce de leche flavor. I’ve heard that the best ice cream place in Buenos Aires is called “Rapanui” and we’ve also visited one called “Lucciano’s”. Both had amazing ice cream, but I found Rapanui’s ice cream a bit creamier—both still very good though.

A fun fact is that they put olives in lots of places like on every pizza (despite the fact that I don’t think they belong there - in my opinion)

Now now, I know it would simply be a crime to not talk about the steaks but bear with me because I don’t know much about steaks in general besides being able to say whether they taste good or not.

Argentina is known for their beef and they eat a LOT of it. Los of restaurants have many different food options and many include meats whether that be a steak or a milanesa (breaded meat). I find that a popular kind is called the ojo de bife or bife de chorizo. Big meat restaurants here are called parillas (barbecue places) and have not disappointed me yet.

They do not lie about how good the beef is, just look at these!

You can also find different kind of meat sandwiches all over Buenos Aires and Argentina. Choripan (a sausage sandwich) is very popular and I got a Bandiola with great sauces at San Telmo one day.

Another form of food you can find beef in is empanadas which I’ve talked about and shown before. Empanadas are filled pockets of deliciousness. Restaurants typically offer many kinds like ham and cheese, meat, chicken, corn, spinach, etc.

When we were in Salta we went to a town called Purmamarca for lunch where we ate at a restaurant the guide recommended to us. Here they served llama! I’ve never been one who has tried very exotic foods, but I figured while I am here I might as well try it. I got it in the form of a milanesa and found it oddly chewy at parts. Another thing I got in that tour was a ham and cheese tortilla that they sold at a rest stop on our way through the valley which was very good.

More recently we went on a trip to Mendoza where we went on a tour that offered a five course meal or different things. The meal included things like squid, duck, trout, creamy rice in rabbit broth, and more! I’ve never had a five-course meal before but I was very happy with how it turned out. The portions were very small but for five courses I don’t know how I would’ve eaten it had it been normal meal proportions.
