when chai's ex-girlfriend came to his doorstep with their daughter, he was shocked to say the least. no way was he ready to be a father, let alone raising him without his ex. he didn't think he could do a good job raising a kid on his own. thankfully after a long lecture after putting his daughter to bed, his parents told him they'd step up and help him raise her.

his ex had already given her a name when she gave birth and decided on emma, but had her keep chai's last name instead of hers. she told him if she didn't like her name he could change it, it was just a name she always wanted for her daughter.

baby names were the furthest thing from his mind, so he figured it was best to just keep her name the way it was. when emma was old enough to ask about her mother, chai told her that she was busy and wanted to do a lot of things so he was in charge of taking care of her in her stead.

emma was disappointed to hear this, and even more disappointed to know that her name was given to her by her mother who didn't even bother to stick around or keep in touch with them. when emma was six she demanded that no one call her emma anymore and that everyone should call her "emmy" instead. chai had asked her why she didn't want to be called by her name but she wouldn't give him an answer.

her reasoning behind this is that emma is the name given to her by her mother who doesn't care about her or her father, and doesn't want it. and emmy is similar enough, so her thinking is that emmy is chai's daughter and that's what she wants to go by.

so because of this, everyone including chai, his parents, teachers, classmates, etc all call her "emmy" now. chai never bothered to get her name legally changed in case this was just a phase or she might change her mind later. however, that wasn't the case, but he still kept her name the way it was, but no one ever calls her by it because they know it'd make her upset.

oh the struggle of picking just one!! i don't want to be biased and choose a recent favourite so i'm going to say "abandoned love" by bob dylan bc it accompanied me on a really special trip to kamloops all the way back in may <33

2. album of the year

this was the year of hejira, and preacher's daughter, and pearl, and so many albums!! i really can't choose, they're all so good

19. what're you most excited about for next year?

i can't wait to watch my local women's hockey team make it to the playoffs!! other than hockey, i really want to use next year as a clean slate to be more creative, start an intentional writing practise and pick up the guitar properly. also i want to finally join the knitting club lmao - someone hold me to it please!
