Ser Emmon Cuy, the Yellow Knight of the Rainbow Guard

“Wicked woman!” screamed Ser Emmon, he of the sunflowered steel. “Away from him, you vile creature!”

Not a character I have vast amounts to say about! From what we see of him, he's certainly the bad cop to Robar's good cop, and I'm certainly a bit less broken up about his death at Loras' hands.

I like the sculpt a lot, the axe in his off hand visually conveys him being a hot head, without looking as cheesy as most dual wielding. He's also got a beautiful face, very angular and expressive, fun to paint. I chose to stick with my method of painting silver and using inks to add the colour, and I'm glad I did as it definitely gives a more vivid yellow than just using gold. The blue cloth looks very nice with the yellow as well.

AN ARRANGMENT OF FLOWERS

The marriage of Douglas and Esther brought together the House Malus of Sweetgrove and House Cuy of Sunhouse. Together they had three children: Adelaide, the current Lady of Sweetgrove, Lucillia, and Felicity. Lady Esther passed away at age forty of a prolonged illness.

Their family line is established as the following: Paternal: Everett Malus married to Sybell Hawthorne. Together they had three children: Douglas, Alon, and Saede. Saede Malus and Sybell Malus died of a fever at twelve and fifty two years of age respectively. Alon Malus passed a few months after the marriage of Douglas and Esther at age twenty one from a broken neck as the result of an accident while horseback riding. Everett Malus also passed away five years later, at age fifty nine.

Maternal: Hyle Cuy married to Lucinda Mertyns. Together they had four children: Esther, Laurane, Myranda, and Cecily. Lucinda passed at age forty four, cause unknown. On Lady Lucinda’s death Hyle remarried to Lady Alyce Kidwell. Together they had two children: Emmot and Ellyn. Hyle Cuy passed away at age sixty seven in his sleep.

Laurane married a member of the junior branch of House Hightower, Bryen. Together they have three children: Lorence, Edwyn, Denyse. Myranda married Triston Santagar. They have two sons: Arron and Lewyn. Cecily married a common merchant named Rolland, they have no children as of yet.

Emmot married Rylene Lowther and they have no children. Ellyn is currently unmarried.

Answering another question you said: 'Brienne dies, murdered by Loras in a blind rage.' What if Brienne manages to kill Loras in self defense after he has already slain Emmon Cuy and Robar Royce and manages to run away? Or if she stays to prove her innocence, any chance of Brienne getting a fair trial? Would Mace defend the hypothesis that Cuy, Royce & Brienne were in cahoots to murder renly? If only Brienne is accused of regicide Loras still has killed 2 of his companions for no real reason.

I don't think that's likely. Brianne was quite distraught after Renly's death so I don't think she'd be fighting at her best - on the tourney field she bested Loras but in the aftermath of Renly's death was fighting Emmon Cuy (said to be rash and tire easily) and not showing the same dominance.

But in the hypothetical, I imagine if Brienne runs, she's declared guilty in absentia and marked as a fugitive - though this would obviously have to come from the Iron Throne and Joffrey might not care enough to issue the verdict since Renly was a traitor anyway (his advisors might suggest it though as a cheap way to make nice with House Tyrell). Mace leans pretty hard on any potential judges to ensure a guilty verdict. Loras was the pride of House Tyrell after all.

Of course, in the event that Brienne was incarcerated instead of fleeing, she could demand trial by combat. Cersei demands one after all, and names a champion to fight in her stead. There's no reason Brienne couldn't as well, though she probably would prefer to simply fight her own trial. Likewise, I imagine that there would be no shortage of knights hoping to make good with House Tyrell willing to stand as Tyrell's champion. Of course, Garlan could easily be named as well to showcase that House Tyrell is not spent of its strength. Which means either Brienne or Garlan dies, which makes Westeros all the poorer: both characters are good fighters and good characters.

A Clash of Kings First Read - Chapter 36

(POV: Tyrion VIII.)

Setting: The Red Keep.

Favorite character: Tyrion. It looks like he is working on protecting Sansa too (with trying to send Joffrey to a brothel for example). And he just makes me laugh, though Varys and Littlefinger had great quips too.

MVP: In the chapter itself, I'm gonna go with Tyrion, because he just broke off Sansa's engagement to Joffrey and perhaps gained more swords for the Lannisters (I'm not rooting for them at all, but objectively speaking, they do need them).

Things I loved/liked:

Holy sh*t! Tyrion did it! He did it, right? He broke Sansa's betrothal to Joffrey, right? (Not sure if it will make her "stay" in court more bearable, but at least now she doesn't have to marry the little sh*t).

Okay so I'm going to say it now: Cersei might be plotting something, but it felt great to hear her acknowledging Tyrion: "Tyrion, I know we do not always agree on policy, but it seems to me that I was wrong about you. You are not so big a fool as I imagined. In truth, I realize now that you have been a great help. For that I thank you. You must forgive me if I have spoken to your harshly in the past."

The level of sarcasm in the Small Council session, with Varys's "You and your noble brother will leave His Grace with no council at all if you continue," or Littlefinger's "Before you, Varys? I should never dream of it," or Varys's (yes, again xD) "Mayhaps we will be brothers on the Wall together, you and I." I just love their interactions so very much, because they're two very cunning and sarcastic men!

I guess I liked that Loras Tyrell, Randyll Tarly, Mathis Rowan and Cortnay Penrose stayed loyal to Renly even after he died. I'm pretty sure I'd actually like to see Ser Loras Tyrell more, because he sounds badass and loyal (apparently not to his sworn brothers of the Rainbow Guard but that's another point).

All the rumors about Renly's death. I mean, it's very realistic in my opinion that there would be so many of them, because it happened with only Renly, Catelyn and Brienne in the tent and one is dead while the other two ran away and thus look suspicious, and so there's no way for anyone to really know.

Things I disliked/hated:

Sh*t. I liked Ser Robar Royce. And to know that he was slain by one of his own sworn brothers makes it even worse. (I liked Ser Emmon Cuy a lot less in Cat's previous chapter so I care a lot less that he died.)

What on earth is Cersei plotting? Is it gonna hurt Tyrion? (I have a very bad feeling it will...)

I do not trust Petyr one bit. Just like Tyrion. Still, it's true that Tyrion going instead of him would be... bad, to say the least. And for a moment I thought Cersei would go herself, but well, that was kind of too much to hope for.

It's just creepy the way the men in the Council talk about Margaery Tyrell and Sansa. I know, again, that it's the way it probably was even in our world, but hearing them talk about women like they're nothing more than objects to be bedded and used to gain more soldiers revolts me.

Quotes: Varys's "Have you ever considered that too many answers are the same as no answer at all?" See the point above about rumors.

Thoughts overall: Intriguing. So many threads that still need unweaving.

28mm A Song of Ice and Fire: Rainbow Guard

Hi! I’ve been working on a bit of a project to build up some tabletop-wargaming versions of ASoIaF characters for a couple of years, so figured I might as well share what I’ve been working on here! I’ve been posting on a thread on the LeadAdventureForum for a couple of years, so these are also posted there!

So for a start here, here’s Renly Baratheon’s Rainbow Guard from A Clash of Kings, the figures are mostly builds from the Perry Miniatures Agincourt Mounted Knights set, with some added cloaks, while Loras is a War of the Roses man-at-arms. I tend to imagine ASoIaF as being sort of...fantasy 15th-century so I try to keep things in-line with that sort of period (minus the anachronistic heater shields!)

Ser Brienne of Tarth, Brienne the Blue of the Rainbow Guard

"He said that all his other knights wanted things of him, castles or honors or riches, but all that Brienne wanted was to die for him."

The truest not-a-knight of the Rainbow Guard! I think this is my third take on Brienne, and my favourite so far. Certainly the first where I've been brave enough to take on her Tarth heraldry. I love the contrast the warm colours make with all the blue. I also love the rainbow cloak double wrapped around her.

I have to imagine Parmen Crane and Emmon Cuy were pissed off when Renly told them they couldn't have the Blue role, presumably because he was saving it to make Barristan the Blue, only for Brienne to sweep in.

House Words Wednesdays: House Cuy

Welcome to House Words Wednesdays! Each week, I take a House without known canon or semi-canon words and present what I think could make sense as that House’s motto. You’re free to suggest more as well, if your favored House has not yet been suggested; take a look at this link to see what has already been suggested, and shoot me a tweet or ask through Tumblr if you have another House you’d like to see done. 

House Cuy of Sunhouse (or sometimes Sunflower Hall) is a noble House of the Reach, one of the bannermen sworn to the Hightowers of Oldtown. The Cuys trace their descent to Andal adventurers given lands by the Three Sage Kings of House Gardener, although unlike (perhaps) other families so made (e.g. House Graceford and Varner), the Cuys were sworn to the Hightowers, rather than directly to Highgarden itself. How this came to pass is unknown, although it might be noted that the Cuy seat of Sunhouse (with the town of Cuy right outside its walls) is located in the southwestern part of the Reach, with the two nearest (known) seats, Uplands and Three Towers, both sworn to Oldtown. Perhaps the Sage Kings, fearing the displeasure of their powerful Hightower vassals if they planted a Highgarden bannerman in old Hightower territory, felt it wise to give the relatively unimportant Cuys to the Hightowers, to keep them sweet.  

Whatever their specific origins, the Cuys were certainly notable enough by the time of the War of the Five Kings for the self-styled King Renly Baratheon to take notice. While forming his Rainbow Guard, Renly made Ser Emmon Cuy one of his sworn knights, Emmon the Yellow. Unfortunately, we readers see very little of Ser Emmon during his short tenure as one of Renly’s seven: he only appears on the page after Renly is killed by the shadow assassin. Emmon Cuy begins to fight Brienne, whom he furiously accuses of assassinating Renly, but Robar Royce (at Catelyn’s urging) intervenes, holding off Cuy while Brienne and Catelyn escape. Eventually, both Robar and Emmon are slain by Loras Tyrell, “mad with grief” over Renly's murder. According to Bryce Caron, Emmon Cuy swore with his dying breath that it was Brienne who had killed Renly - though, of course, we readers know that Emmon is mistaken.

The Cuy sigil is six yellow flowers on a blue field (probably sunflowers, as Ser Emmon wears them on his armor and the seat is sometimes called “Sunflower Hall”). Given their sunflowers and their seat’s other name, Sunhouse, I wanted something sun-themed for their words, so I went with Grown in Light. A sunflower needs the sun to grow, of course, with young sunflowers even tilting toward the sun to soak up its rays. But this motto is also a cute nod toward the Cuy lieges, the Hightowers; as Lord Hightower is called “Beacon of the South”, the Hightower sigil is a flaming watchtower, and the Hightower words are “We Light the Way”, this motto suggests that the Cuys grow in the light provided by the Hightower and the Lords of Oldtown. I think this motto also nicely reflects Emmon Cuy's brief career in the series: come to prominence in the light of Renly's “summer”, he was killed in the literal darkness brought by Melisandre's shadow-assassin.
