Houdini - Eminem

Well, Tommy Richman has now lost his spot at the top of the charts, ceding the #1 position to Eminem's 'Houdini' and making this Eminem's first #1 in 11 years!

This is definitely a whoooole lotta nostalgia, and I'm guessing that seeing Eminem throwing it all at the wall again (and particularly, doing so by calling back to his early 2000s hits) is what's gotten people excited about 'Houdini' and secured him the #1 spot on the charts. The music video also reunites Em with Dr. Dre, and has cameo appearances from 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg among others, and has a fun little storyline of modern-day Emimen going up against his 2000's alter-ego Slim Shady.

'Houdini' interpolates a pretty great sample from Steve Miller Band's 'Abracadabra' (which peaked at #8 in the charts back in 1982), and throws in a whole bunch of references to Eminem's old songs, 'My Name Is', 'Without Me', and 'Just Lose It' (which charted at #4, #1, and #1 respectively).

The song itself is fun (and, as I said, nostalgic), but the lyrics are more than a little eye-roll worthy in parts. It's always nice to hear Eminem rapping, and there are definitely some good bars here, but there's a also a bunch that just make Eminem come across as an old, out-of-touch guy. He's no longer in his twenties and trying to be deliberately edgy and provocative just doesn't have the same effect as it did in the 2000s, even if you're 'in on the joke'.

I think 'Houdini' may stick around for a week or two at the top of the charts, but my hunch is that it won't have legs. Sabrina Carpenter has two songs in the top five and is still trying to get her first #1, plus we have some heavy hitters releasing new albums over the next few weeks, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.
