I'm not sure why some try to argue Subaru is a 'pervert' when he often awkwardly tries to play himself off as a gentleman and wants to avoid making people uncomfortable if he can help it. He just doesn't have any experience outside of the games and anime he's into.

I love Subaru and Emilia's bond in the first loop. Emilia tries to push Subaru away through her attitude due to her past trauma of how people treat her once they get to know her. However, due to a mix of his lack of knowledge and his eager need for connection, Subaru perseveres.
Tumblr media
Subaru doesn't care if she's a half-elf, or even the identity of 'Satella' not being something that'll stop him trying to get closer to her. Despite his flaws, Subaru doesn't care about the differences others may have from him and other people.
It entirely makes sense why Emilia grows attached to Subaru so quickly. It also makes sense that she'd be confused and have uncertainty over his intentions of trying to get closer to her. Their dynamic is explored really well in this single section of the series alone.

Something interesting about Subaru is the way his messy self perception and struggles with his body dictate a lot of how he acts as a person. It's unique to me for a protagonist of an isekai series. He accepts his current situation straight away as an escape from his old life.
Tumblr media
Subaru decides to make the most of it, in hopes he could become a better person in this new reality, unlike the disappointment he was in his past life. However, straight away he quickly realises he doesn't have any powers, nor was he any different from how he used to be.
This changes when he meets Emilia. A girl who represents his ideals but also someone he feels he can change himself to be around. Due to this he spends the entirety of the first loop trying to get into her good graces. He plays up an exaggerated version of himself to do so.
Emilia's honesty is something he appreciates about her. He received this from the people in his old life. However, he then dies in his attempt to do this and awakens where he started. His initial efforts seem wasted, and he becomes more frantic in his desire to do something.
Subaru focuses all of his attention onto others who helped him in a way to distract himself from his self. Subaru's sense of self is fractured, he takes in aspects of the people he admires into the self he portrays in public. Despite this, he's honest about himself to others.
It's also interesting how one of his biggest insecurities is the way his body developed during puberty. The happiest he was with himself was when he was an androgynous child. It can be implied Subaru gender nonconforming in some regard, whether transfem or just out of the binary.
This fact is why he idealises women so much. He feels like his life would be easier if he didn't have all the pressure of the masculine hero stereotype to fulfil. Due to this, a lot of his strength actually comes from his intelligence and the way he adapts to situations.
I find it really interesting how the storyline of Re:Zero is a story of a boy discovering himself through trial and error from the strange new world he found himself in. Subaru is one of the most complex fictional characters to me and this aspect is one of the reasons why I love him.

This was the moment Emilia fell for Subaru. The pure honesty he has to his base desires makes her feel at ease around him. As someone who desires honesty from others due to struggling to tell how people really see her, Subaru keeps her at ease in a way most others can't.

My review of Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 1:
Tumblr media
To start with Tappei Nagatsuki's character and world building writing is really well done. I've rewatched the Re:Zero anime countless times over the years, but the amount of depth the novels go into in regards to Subaru's adjustment to his new setting and reasoning why he accepts it.
The small details such as Subaru's lacking desire to be a normal part of society due to the mounting stress he had to achieve his parents' desires. The way his confidence in his self got worse the older he got, and he hated his body, the older he got.
It all is done really well at characterising the smaller aspects of Subaru's personality that become increasingly obvious across the volume. The sudden insistence to just enjoy the new world is because he already was desiring an escape from his real life beforehand.
Subaru and Emilia 'Satella's first meeting is also portrayed so beautifully and it's fun to notice how hard Subaru had to work to get into Emilia's good graces across the first loop and being lucky, into needing to fight to earn that again during the third and fourth loops.
It goes to show how quickly Subaru adjusts to his surroundings and how well he can analyse other people. Yes, he may be able to revive and try again each time he dies, but he himself is a smart and intelligent person who improves himself very quickly.
I also like how the novels portray Emilia's struggle to fit into society, despite her beautiful appearance, and it foreshadows the struggles she has around her own body and identity that only become clear to Subaru much later on in the series.
Emilia's attachment to Subaru makes complete sense. However, she struggles to read into his intentions, which adds a layer of distrust towards his intentions but a desire to get to know him better and has hope he could be someone who'd accept and understand her.
The novels have so many small details which add a lot of weight to the character's motivations and the story. I'm excited to keep reading further as it's making me fall in love with the series even more than I already am.

Subaru and Emilia's dynamic is so cute because they're both awkward people who don't have experience with romance or even friendships, so they bounce off of each other well. They're discovering themselves slowly over time with their small interactions, Subaru especially, who knows her longer by now.

Subaru Natsuki's mind is in the gutter due to viewing every situation through his nerd brain and expecting anime tropes. I love him.

My favourite ship dynamics are just two idiots who mess with each other half the time. I love Emilia and Subaru's dynamic even in small scenes like this.

Subaru emotionally attaches onto Rem after his trauma during the first two loops in the 3rd Arc. He was abandoned by Emilia, but Rem fought so hard to save him, despite his weaknesses she saw firsthand. This is where he begins to grow attached to her in a similar regard he is towards Emilia.

My review of Re:Zero Light Novel Volume 4!
Tumblr media
This was my favourite volume so far. There is a lot more depth in regards to what happens during the Royal Selection arc and a lot of the Volume was weirdly missing from the anime adaption. I love the way this volume characterises Emilia and Puck and the conflict with Subaru.
When Subaru first came into Emilia's life, she saw him as someone who could possibly treat her like a real girl, and not 'the half witch' or 'the witch of envy'. The way he acted intrigued her for the better. However, she started getting bothered with the way he is so secretive around her.
No matter how often she'd try to get him to open up. Subaru would always dodge the question and tease her. While she was fine with this initially it became a problem once she started seeing how he'd act without regard to her own wishes. He overidealises but also doesn't respect her as an individual.
Puck warns Subaru earlier in the volume, but Emilia gives him one last chance to show he can listen and respect her. Unfortunately, Subaru's desire to be included and be relevant in every aspect of her life made him ignore her again. This felt like the ultimate betrayal.
Subaru then went on to fight against Julius due to him hurting his pride without any regard to how this'd look back on Emilia. Emilia decided to be upfront and ask him why he cares so much on doing all this in her name. Subaru doesn't respond, then shows his true nature.
Yes, we as the reader understand Subaru's side in things, but Emilia's reactions do make sense. If not for the wake up call Julius gave him, Subaru wouldn't have begun to mature and come to terms with himself after a lot of trial and error.
One other thing I love about this volume is the way it characterises Aldebaran. The revelation that he is also a human isekai'd into the world, much like Subaru gives him a bigger relevance that the anime left out for some reason. This also makes Priscilla stand out more for later on.
Overall, I love this volume more than the previous 3, due to amount of depth it has into the character dynamics that the anime didn't depict as thoroughly. Even Rem's insistence towards Subaru's wishes come from Roswaal instructing her to allow him to do as he pleases, which foreshadows to later.
