In truth, though, there is only one question Emet-Selch wants answered by this place, and it is thus: from whence have you come? All other quandaries posed by the Tower, its keeper, his eight-times-Rejoined soul, and what he truly means to accomplish by dragging himself and it across the rift to a doomed shard can, Emet-Selch believes, be explained by that single answer - or if not explained, at least further opined on, and if there is something he is singularly good at doing, it is having opinions. Thus Emet-Selch’s unannounced materialization in the Umbilical at half past four in the afternoon, when a cursory inspection of the Exarch’s other usual haunts, including his favored sitting room, turned up nothing but scattered papers and a long-cold pot of tea that must have been brewed and summarily forgotten.

being on opposing sides of the war, both losing yourselves for causes that are at odds

loving somebody and feeling dirty and wrong and disgusting for it but in their arms is the only place you feel at peace (and then they leave, or maybe it is you who leaves, but either way you are back on your respective relentless pursuits, forgetting again who you really are. or maybe the mission is all there ever was of you)

being with them only reminds you of who you are and renews your resolve that sometimes you shamefully feel slipping. they remind you of what you are fighting for (even if it is against them)

ok it is important to me that the ship name i use is emetexarch. because it's a romance between emet selch and the exarch, not hades and graha tia. they're two exhausted, old, isolated men, and it is the weight of their titles that draws them together
