Episode 2 ~ Bound By Blood
Narrator: Cons had called a personal and private meeting with the Great Alpha and after being made to wait a day or two he was finally granted one. He watched as Emerson Tolman approached, a scowl on his face, but he wasn’t alone, unfortunately he was dragging the fairy named Athena Lutz into this situation. He wondered if they were dating or...he couldn’t let her distract him or rile him up but he knew he couldn’t trust her.
After all, in the mind of Cons it was Athena’s fault that he was here at all. It was her fault that werewolves were a thing, at least from what he knew, and the full blame for his curse was her fault but that was a story for another day perhaps. Today he had to clear some things up with Emerson...

New fall shows
So there were a number of TV festivals and events here in New York over the last few weeks and I wound up seeing the pilots of a number of the new shows (like 13 of them).  So, with the US TV season starting next week, here's what I thought of what I saw.
ABC:
Emergence is really well acted.  Allison Tolman plays a Long Island police chief who finds a young girl (Alexa Skye Swinton) as the sole survivor of a plane crash.  When odd government forces – official and unofficial – try to take custody of the girl, Tolman, her father (Clancy Brown), ex-husband (Donald Faison) and their daughter (Ashley Aufderheide) all fight to protect the girl.   While the acting is great, there is a "plot twist" at the end that has me thinking if they're doing this in the pilot, what are they doing next week?  May give it a second episode but like Manifest, I'm worried about where this is going.
Stumptown is great.  Cobie Smulders plays Dex Parios, an Afghanistan War vet with issues.  She lives in her hometown Portland with her developmentally disabled brother in their childhood home.  She has a best friend, a dead fiancé with a powerful family, a running joke of a car and some PTSD issues.  There's nothing new here except it is a woman with issues trying to make her way in the P.I. business instead of a man but it is really well done.  The supporting cast is strong with Jake Johnson, Michael Ealy, Camryn Manheim, Cole Sibus and Tantoo Cardinal.
CBS:
Bob Hearts Abishola is the typical Chuck Lorre comedy where there is a little heart and some fart jokes.  Folake Olowofoyeku is terrific as Abishola.   You'll learn more about socks than the average sock wearer probably needs but hey – learning is good.
Evil sort of taped into all my good X-Files feelings.  He's a believer, she's based in science, they team up to find the truth.  I'm there.  It does not hurt that Mike Colter is the believer.  Katja Herbers is really strong in the non-believer role.  The two work with Aasif Mandvi and against Michael Emerson.  Christine Lathi shows up the mom of Herbers's character, Kurt Fuller from Supernatural is there as Herbers's shrink.  Concerns about what they're doing next week are there but the way the case was resolved makes me think the producers are not picking sides (in The X-Files, Mulder was always right).
The Unicorn took Walton Goggins, who was a villain in not one but two of my favorite programs - The Shield and Justified - and made him into a charming, likable leading man.  Goggins’s character is a widower, a year after his wife’s death, doing his best to run his gardening business and raise his two teenage daughters.  He has help from two couples who are longtime family friends who want Goggins’s character to start living for himself.  It sounds like another dead wife show but it has real depth.  It also has a great cast around Goggins with Rob Corddry and Michaela Watkins as one of the couples.  Omar Benson Miller and Maya Lynne Robinson are the other couple (and Robinson is great).  Since I lost LIfe in Pieces, I’m giving this one a spin.
CW:
Batwoman fits right in with the whole Arrowverse world.  Ruby Rose as Kate Kane is a stunning screen presence.  Demands attention in every scene even when she's just standing in the background.  Dougray Scott plays Kate's father.  There are family conflicts, crime in Gotham, missing family members and the Batman vibe without the Caped Crusader actually appearing.  I've been out of the Arrowverse for a while – the time travel baby Sarah is now baby JJ stuff had me check out – but this is a good way to return.
Katy Keane is the anti-Riverdale in a really great way.  Sunny, happy, positive – this is a "making it in the big city" (with the big city being a real place – New York) story for four young folks interested in fashion (Katy), singing (Josie from Josie & the Pussycats), performing (Jorge/Ginger) and sports (K.O.).  There are ups and downs for everyone with rivals all around but these are characters that are easy to root for.  This show isn't targeted at me as I am old but it is really cute.
Nancy Drew is Riverdale 2.0 in a not so great way.  Dour, depressing and physically dark – the program is about yet another dead young woman and the town full of secrets.   Been there, seen this going back to the original Twin Peaks.
FOX:
I don't know who thought Almost Family was a good idea but I did not one.  Brittnay Snow is the daughter of world-renowned fertility doctor Timothy Hutton.  As Hutton's character is getting a lifetime achievement award, a reporter asks about fraud at his clinic.  Seems Hutton was providing more than just medical treatment at the clinic – he was providing biological material.   Some of this is played for laughs, some of it played as jealousy between friends.  It is just tone-deaf about what a violation this is (and an early season Law & Order episode).  They push how great it is only child Brittnay Snow has all these siblings!  Not good.
Prodigal Son has serial killer Michael Sheen helping his FBI Profiler son Tom Payne solve crimes.  Lou Diamond Phillips shows up.  I'm in as this is my type of show.
NBC:
Bluff City Law has Jimmy Smits as a civil rights/victim rights lawyer in Memphis whose estranged daughter Catlin McGee works for big corporations.  After a family tragedy, the two team up in Smits law firm.  Based on the pilot, it looks like there is a case of the week (high school gardener dying of cancer after using certain pesticides) and what looks like a season long case (high school teacher serving life for killing a student who he didn't actually kill).  The performances are fine but this seems likes season one of Bull where every client is innocent/a victim of a big corporation/super sympathetic and our heroes will always find a way to get them justice even if it means bending the rules.   Nothing new but nice to see Jimmy Smits again.
Perfect Harmony and Sunnyside have the same basic set up.  A person in a position of importance (Bradley Whitford as a Princeton music professor; Kal Penn as a New York city council member) suffer professional fall (Whitford is a prick who threw a chair at a student; Penn is a prick who tried to bribe a cops after at DUI).  Wallowing in failure, person accidentally comes across a plucky group who all are working toward a goal (Whitford finds a choir; Penn has a group of green card holders trying to be citizens).  While still being mostly awful, person finds some heart working with the rag tag group.  There are differences – Whitford's character just lost his wife to cancer and is in competition with John Carroll Lynch's choir, Penn's character lives with his sister, a doctor.  But they're the same show.

PILOT season!!
When I was young, Brandon Tartikoff was a hero of mine. I always fancied myself a closet programmer, so I love pilot season. THR published a list of the projects moving forward and as I was procrastinating, some are already on the air.
Let’s start with Stumptown. Inspired by the Oni Press graphic novels, Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders), a strong, assertive and unapologetically sharp-witted (but, let’s face it, hot mess) Army veteran working as a P.I. in Portland. Michael Ealy plays the cop because there must always be one. His boss is Camryn Manheim (yes!!), and the whole reason I heard about the show is Tantoo Cardinal, a powerful local Native American tied to Dex’s past. Oops, almost forgot the best friend, JakeJohnson of New Girl. His past is a little messy, too. He now owns a bar and employs Dex’s brother Ansel (Cole Sibus). It’s a tight cast, and Dex really is a hot mess nut she gets things done.
All Rise, it looks like, was originally pitched as Courthouse, good thing they changed the name! Simone Missick is a former DA who just became a judge and is encircled by Ruthie Ann Mills as her assistant, Lindsay Mendez as her stenographer, J. Alex Brinson as the deputy in her courtroom, and Marg Helgenberger as her mentor. I was not familiar with the first three when I started the show but they are a strong team. The 2 main lawyers are Wilson Bethel, a DA and old friend of Missick’s judge, and Jessica Camacho, a VERY determined public defender. I like the dynamics of the show, it’s very seldom a case of the week situation (even though there is one). Viewers get little snippets of most of the characters’ lives organically so, in my opinion, you enjoyed the show more the more you watch.
Evil is one of the most unique shows on the air this season. It pits science and religion, Katja Herbers plays a skeptical clinical psychologist who joins a priest-in-training (Mike Colter) and a blue-collar contractor ( Aasif Mandvi)  to investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there's a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work. The give and take between science and religion is truly engaging and Michael Emerson is truly creepy and possibly playing for the other side in this battle.
Bob Hearts Abishola follows Bob (Billy Gardell) who, after having a heart attack, falls in love with his Nigerian nurse (Folake Olowofoyeku). I think I saw the pilot, the rest of the episodes are on my DVR at the moment and thanks to some of the promos and Christine Ebersole, I do plan to get to them. ETA: I’ve watched a couple.  Folake Olowofoyeku is really great but because this whole thing seems to involve the progress of their relationship, it runs a little slow for me.
Carol's Second Act is also piling up on my DVR.  I’ve been on bedrest because of an injury and have been mostly streaming. But, like Bob, I do plan to get to it. I do like that Patricia Heaton is the lead, a med student of all things. I have to think it’s also still on the air because it also has a strong male lead, Kyle MacLachlan, although I’ve never personally seen him do comedy.  Cedric Yarbrough is a strong motivator for me as well as I saw every episode of Speechless. ETA: Well, plans change. I erased them all. I thought if I hadn’t gotten to them by now, watching them would be a chore.
The Unicorn is a sitcom I actually have been watching. I didn’t want to at first because, although I’d heard of Walton Goggins, I had never actually seen him in anything. But it’s kind of like Seinfeld in that there is such an impressively strong group playing the couples who are his friends. Omar Benson Miller (yes!!) and  Maya Lynne Robinson are a couple with 4 kids and essentially a no nonsense approach and Rob Corddry and comedy goddess Michaela Watkins are the white color kid with a single kid who is well on her way to nerdhood.  These four a Goggins’ lifeline after his wife passes and he becomes a single father. The whole widower thing is handled well. His wife is mentioned or remembered in a completely organic way and allows the show to stay away from a trajectory that could have become maudlin.
Prodigal Son is another fairly unique concept for this season. Tom Payne plays Malcolm Bright, the son of a notorious serial killer called The Surgeon (Michael Sheen) who understands how killers think. The criminal psychologist uses his skills to help an NYPD unit led by Lou Diamond Phillips, a cop he’s known since his youth. What is interesting for me so far is that Bright’s mom, Bellamy Young, is her own kind of nuts, and Malcolm, who started off as a little nutty (I mean consider his past), is well on his way to possibly off his rocker.
Bluff City Law is a case of the week legal drama set in Memphis. The viewer is getting smidges of the character’s private lives each week but character development seems a little slow. I like Caitlin McGee’s performance but I’d never heard of her before watching this. The anchor for the show and the law firm in it is Jimmy Smits. The supporting cast, especially Barry Sloane who’s mostly navigated a single case for the first part of the season, is just starting to get noticed. It’s not something I race to watch but I like it. ETA: It has gotten cancelled. Poor Barry Sloane.
Emergence was a show I was waiting for as it marked the return of Allison Tolman.  She plays a sheriff who takes in a young child that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation so far has been weird and sometimes violent and definitely is affecting her family, including father Clancy Brown and ex-husband Donald Faison. But, bless her, she is nowhere near ready to give up. The cliffhanger before Christmas break was very illuminating.
I have watched a couple of episodes of Perfect Harmony (the rest are on my DVR). I love that Bradley Whitford is doing outright comedy although his character, an Ivy League music professor, is quite cranky. But I’m not in a rush to get back to it because it doesn’t seem like there’s enough material for it to run for multiple seasons. ETA: Like Carol’s Second Act, these got dumped off my DVR.
While we’re talking about enough material, Sunnyside was one of the first casualties of the season and, I have to say, I saw it coming. The pilot was well done, Kal Penn played Garrett Shah, a disgraced former New York city councilman who finds his calling when faced with immigrants in need of his help and in search of the American Dream. I know the immigration and nationalization process in the US is a lengthy process but it just didn’t seem like there was enough to keep people coming back despite the presence of talent like Diana Maria Riva.
Almost Family revolves around Julia Beckley (Brittany Snow) having her life turned upside down when it's revealed that her father, a pioneering Nobel Prize-winning fertility doctor, used his own sperm to conceive dozens of children over the course of his career. She connects with two “sisters” in particular and I think that’s what they’ve built the show on but I had a hard time believing any of the negative effects of all this coming from Snow and chose to stop watching. I do have the Australian show it’s based on as part of my Netflix list, I think I will probably end up watching that first.
I did start watching Batwoman before my injury, it being female led and all. Ruby Rose does inspire a bit of monotony in the voiceovers that populate the show but I get it, she’s tired, she’s working hard and only making minimal progress, I understand she’s not full of pep. It is kind of weird to watch her slip into the suit and try to make it work for her and watch Camrus Johnson, the steward of the life Bruce Wayne abandoned, do his best to both avoid and become her Alfred. ETA: That got dumped off the DVR, too. There’s SOOOO much TV.
FBI: Most Wanted is a spinoff of FBI (somebody may have to stop Dick Wolf) featuring
Julian McMahon of Nip/Tuck as the head of team tasked with hunting down fugitives. Sadly, it’s been pretty run of the mill so far except for McMahon’s in-laws, which include Nathanial Arcand as his brother-in-law and a member of his squad.
The CW did reboot Nancy Drew and while I did not hate the concept, I’m still loyal to Pamela Sue Martin and chose not to watch it.
These are the shows that are on the air. Some mid-season shows are still ready to roll out. Some are already being bolstered by promos like Deputy. I am looking forward to that one and watching Stephen Dorff unexpectedly be made the sheriff of LA County. I think and really hope Yara Martinez, last seen and underutilized on Bull, will get to be a meaty part of this drama. ETA: Yara has gotten some featured episodes and done well but she’s essentially in the same boat as David Conrad on the Ghost Whisperer and Jake Weber on Medium.
Tommy is another cop show but thankfully Tommy is Abigail Thomas’ nickname and Edie Falco is front and centre as the first female chief of police for Los Angeles. She got the position as part of a court mandate after some ugliness in the department and often has to deal with the mayor, Tom Sadowski. Tommy’s assembled a pretty tight circle so far and, of course, does things her own way, so I’ve been trying to watch this live.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is SOOOOOO good. I’ve missed Jane Levy so much and this has not only a lovely story but singing and dancing (with choreography by Mandy Moore). After an accident in an MRI machine, Levy’s character can hear people expressing their feelings through song. Her supporting cast is top notch. Alex Newell of Glee plays her neighbor who is trying to help Zoey figure this out, Skylar Astin of Pitch Perfect and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is her BFF, Lauren Graham is her boss, and Mary Steenburgen and Peter Gallagher are her parents. Some of the most touching scenes (and songs) have involved Levy and Gallagher, who has lost many functions, including speech and a lot of movement. Thanks to Zoey’s condition, he is able to express himself to her through song and Gallagher’s voice is so sweet.
Geniuses has become Outmatched and features Maggie Lawson and Jason Biggs as parents of 4 children, 3 of whom are geniuses. I’ve seen 3 episodes so far. Everyone except the “normal” child seems to be waiting for a rimshot. I did enjoy Tony Danza as Jason Bigg’s dad but I am not going to be busting my butt to watch it.
Uninsured has become Indebted. Adam Pally and Abby Elliott end up having to take care of Dave's parents (Fran Drescher and Steven Weber), who have mismanaged their finances and need help paying down a sizable debt. Sadly, like Outmatched, everyone seems to be waiting for a rimshot and the jokes seem really repetitive. Weber’s character, for example, is constantly talking about spending extravagant amounts of money even though he is deep in debt and I doubt they’re going after a dementia storyline with him. When the name Dan Levy popped up on the credits I did a lightning fast search on IMDB to make sure it was not, in my mind, THE Dan Levy of Schitt’s Creek, and thankfully, there are 2 of them.
Lincoln Rhyme, who was played on the big screen by Denzel Washington, is now Russell Hornsby from Grimm and Fox’s failed Proven Innocent. There’s still an Amelia Sachs, there’s still a Bone Collector, and Michael Imperioli is always a strong utility player but I’m finding it collecting on the DVR because of the plethora of good stuff available on Thursday and my need to get through that because sampling Friday’s mostly guilty pleasures.
Katy Keene has made it air. It’s a Riverdale spinoff on the CW and they are spending a lot on advertising but not enough to rope me in. Not that I think it’s not a good show, I’m just not the target audience.
Of the rest of the list, I know the planned reboots of New York Undercover and NYPD blue did not make it out of the gate.
I’m never going to get this post finished if I included all of the pilots on the list I still haven’t talked about, so I’ll go with bullet points about the ones that stood out to me:
Nana: Katey Sagal playing a grandmother. Yeah.
An untitled comedy pairing Leslie Odom Jr. and Kelly Jenrette: GREAT team, well matched I think.
The Republic of Sarah: Sarah Drew of Grey's Anatomy goes from mayor to president. So much story potential there.
Broke: Jaime Camil and Natasha Leggero plus Pauley Perrette - uh, yes please. Sounds like a very strong team to me.
Next is a vehicle for Jon Slattery of Mad Men, who I adore, but I don’t recognize much of the supporting cast, which could be a problem if none of them are able to rise to his level.
Filthy Rich features Kim Cattrall and Gerald McRaney, a very strong base but I’m wondering how the religious community will respond to a story about how imperfect true believers can be. Another plus for me, it’s supposed to be filmed in New Orleans.
Richard Lovely is a vehicle for the uber talented Thomas Lennon, who plays the disgruntled author of the best-selling children's book series, Mr. Mouse. It looks like he’ll have Wendie Malick as a frequent scene partner and I believe that to be an ideal pairing.
Council of Dads is getting a lot of advertising but will involve death. If they handle it as well as The Unicorn has, I think it might have a chance.
That’s all I’ve got. I wish I’d finished this sooner. My DVR is 63% full. I’m going to match more TV.

2019 broadcast shows worth your time
CLOSE
Tumblr media
A new season means you need a new show to watch. Here are five series coming this fall. USA TODAY
The TV world has been buzzing this fall with the debuts of Apple TV+ and Disney+, two new streaming services joining a world that already has too much TV. But that doesn’t mean broadcast TV is dead. Far from it.
Three of the best new shows this fall are airing on ABC and CBS, and they’re worth your time – and a DVR season pass or a watch on Hulu or CBS All Access – at least as much as fancy “Star Wars” shows or Jennifer Aniston soaps.
ABC’s “Emergence” and “Stumptown,” along with CBS’s “Evil,” are smart, well-crafted series that are not only good but getting good-enough ratings. (“Evil” has already been renewed for a second 13-episode season). That’s a difficult feat for broadcast dramas, but these series have done it, somehow, with super-powered kids, Portland, Oregon, humor and a lot of priests. What else do you need for your TV diet?
More: Early ratings hits and misses: ‘Stumptown,’ ‘Prodigal Son’ lead TV’s new season
“Emergence” is a network version of “Stranger Things”: A Long Island, New York, police chief (the great Allison Tolman) discovers a mysterious superpowered young girl with memory loss, chased by men in suits. “Stumptown,” based on a graphic novel, stars Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”) as a down-and-out private detective in Portland. “Evil” is a religious variation of “The X-Files,” in which a priest-in-training (Mike Colter, “Luke Cage”), a forensic psychologist (Katja Herbers, “Westworld”) and a tech specialist (Aasif Maandvi, “The Daily Show”) investigate whether demonic possessions, miracles and prophets are legitimate or hoaxes. (One’s a believer, and two are skeptics, to keep things level-headed.)
Tumblr media

Although the three series are quite different, they all have perfectly cast leading women. Smulders, always a gem on “HIMYM” and criminally underutilized in her few Marvel films, finally gets to flaunt her talents in a lead role.
Dex Parios, the ad-hoc detective she plays, is a type you’ve seen before – a messy personal life, a history of trauma, a hard-edged personality but fiercely protective of her loved ones – but Smulders makes her seem new and fresh. Dex has a surprisingly strong moral compass and sense of duty that seems at odds with her penchant for punk rock.
More: ‘Stumptown’ star Cobie Smulders: ‘Going through cancer has made me a better person’
The series relies on a case-of-the-week format, and so far it’s managed to be compelling but not overly complex. The supporting cast, which includes Jake Johnson and Michael Ealy, is also delightful. The characters genuinely like one another, and many times that makes for a more pleasurable watch than tense police dramas.
Tumblr media
Allison Tolman as Long Island chief of police Jo on “Emergence” (Photo: Zach Dilgard/ABC)
Tolman, of ABC’s canceled-too-soon “Downward Dog” and the first season of FX’s “Fargo,” is also a strong leading actor who just needed the right project. “Emergence” feels, at times, like the latest in broadcast TV’s long line of “Lost” remakes, but the writers make it more family drama than supernatural caper, which helps strike the right tone and balance. Jo’s job as a cop makes the unraveling of the central mystery far more expedient, so the series can concentrate on the emotional ramifications of the sci-fi revelations rather than trying to make every mystery more confusing than the one before. A steady diet of questions and answers keeps the series chugging along easily, as does the cute kid (Alexa Swinton).
Tumblr media
Katja Herbers as Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as David Acosta and Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shakir on “Evil.” (Photo: Jeff Neumann/CBS)
Perhaps requiring a bigger leap of faith than an indestructible little girl is “Evil,” from Robert and Michelle King, the creators of “The Good Wife,” and led by Herbers as Dr. Kristen Bouchard. She and Colter definitely have Scully and Mulder vibes and nearly as much chemistry. The series mixes religious oddities of the week with a bigger, season-long arc involving an evil Michael Emerson (as creepy as he ever was on “Lost”) and debates about science versus faith. The series is also genuinely scary at times, especially in a Halloween episode with a new twist on the somewhat tired exorcism story. Parts of the story can lean into the fantastical, but Herbers, with her expressive eyes and cool dialogue delivery, is a grounding constant.
Investing in a new broadcast show can always be a risky proposition when it comes to quality and cancellation risk. But this year the trio demonstrates the big-network platform is not yet dead, creatively speaking, and hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of Dex, Jo and Kristen in seasons to come.

Evil  |   The science vs. religion drama from The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King is the frontrunner at CBS. The procedural starring Westworld breakout Katja Herbers, Luke Cage grad Mike Colter and network favorite Michael Emerson is considered to be already on the air, with the Kings officially back on the network (vs. subscription streaming platform CBS All Access). Also looking hot is Dick Wolf's FBI spinoff, Most Wanted, starring Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck). The very on-brand CBS drama Courthouse — starring fellow network favorite Marg Helgenberger — is considered a strong contender as well. Drama Tommy, starring Emmy favorite Edie Falco, is a priority for CBS but may need to be retooled.
Prism  |  The murder trial drama — told through the POV of a different version involved in the case in every episode — is NBC's leading drama contender. Malin Akerman stars in the drama from CSI grad Carol Mendelsohn that has remained hot since the Billions actress landed the leading role. Elsewhere, Allison Tolman-led genre thriller Emergence — a rare off-network buy from ABC Studios — is said to have turned out well. Jimmy Smits drama Bluff City Law also has a shot.NBC has already renewed the bulk of its dramas for next season — only Blindspot remains on the bubble with a This Is Us renewal all but a formality — so it's unclear just how many of seven dramas will make the cut.
Untitled Hannah Simone  |  With the Black-ish prequel spinoff Mixed-ish already picked up to series, ABC's other comedy frontrunners are about what you'd expect. Hannah Simone may finally get the right call from ABC a year after the network's surprising pass on Greatest American Hero. The New Girl grad stars in the single-camera comedy about a woman and her Indian-American immigrant father. In addition to starring, Simone wrote and exec produced the pilot, which would fit in nicely to ABC's comedy brand. Also in the mix is the untitled Leslie Odom Jr. multicamera comedy inspired by real-life progressive pastors Toure Roberts and Sarah Jakes-Roberts. The comedy boasts Hamilton grad Odom Jr. as a leading man and is produced by ABC favorite Kerry Washington (Scandal).

Episode 2 ~ Bound By Blood
"Isn’t it obvious?” Emerson said, finding humor because he felt Cons was far too naïve. He wasn’t. He had dealt with the beings fighting for control He had been face to face with Julius. He had been invited into the realm of magic and plead for mercy for his newly created pack before the likes of L. He had been a hunter of vampires himself before being kidnapped by Sims In Black and apparently becoming some test subject. The experiment had given him the ability to not only transform into werewolf but pass on the ‘curse’. Emerson had known that mysterious forces were at play and they were all fighting for power. “You are so foolish Cons, you think you can just live a normal life and-”
"Not this again...”
"Yes, this again. This again until things are set right, Cons.” Emerson said with finality. This was the path he had chosen and there was no turning back now.
"So what do the pups in my territory have to do with this war you want to start? Or rather this war you want to pull us into?”
"Everything. Since one of Julius’ own is currently in your city. We plan to make an example out of her and I demand that you stay out of this business. I care little that you’ve taken interest in her. That is your mistake.”
Cons started shaking his head at once. He knew this was what it was about. He had a feeling in his gut that Laverne was the reason a group of pups had popped up in his territory and he didn’t want to imagine what they would do to her if they got a hold of her. “That girl is innocent. She just wants to live a normal life,” he found himself pleading now.
"Too bad, I’ve wanted a lot from my life and everything I’ve wanted was taken away by vampires, specifically those of Clan Tourneau. I mean to take revenge as it is owed to me,” and from behind he could see the fairy Athena stand proudly behind Emerson. He wasn’t sure what she had to do with all of this but he had a feeling this was partly her fault.
"This is not going to end well-”
"You’re right, it isn’t, but it WILL end.”

Episode 2 ~ Bound By Blood
"What is your issue now, Cons?” The impatient demand came out as a growl. Emerson and Cons did not have the best of relationship as it was built entirely on tension. Emerson believed in the superiority of the wolf, that the reason his species was driven to extinction was because they were a threat to all. He believed that he was chosen by some divine power to put the werewolf in its right place. Cons thought otherwise, it was a curse, nothing more. “What is-”
"Why are there pups in my territory?” Cons replied, getting right to the point. They could discuss philosophy of the supernatural world another day. “Hunting on my territory?
"Because they wish to be there? Because I’ve told them to be there”
"They are within the city limits E, they put us all at risk, they-”
"All part of the plan Cons, a plan you are not part of and so it isn’t your business,” Emerson said smugly, always happy to remind Cons that he was low on the power structure. The only reason he was allowed to call a city like San Sequoia his territory is because wolves typically did not enjoy urban centers, not like vampires at least.
"What are you talking about E? What’s this new plan of yours I’m not privy too then?”

Episode 11 ~ My Immortal
Narrator: Somewhere deep in some Simerican desert an experiment continued. An idea progressed behind the power and will of a man defeated by the love of his life. A man nearly killed who was chosen, by fate itself it seems, to rise again as something other than a man. S.I.M.S wasn’t sure what they were about to unleash upon the world, nor were they sure if they could eventually control it if things went awry, but they were sure they would learn a lot from their live experimentation and perhaps that knowledge would bring them closer to their goals...

Episode 7 ~ Past Is Past
Narrator: Emerson was ready to leave. He would be back again the next night as he had committed himself to visiting her more often. The idea was that if she saw him she would always be reminded of her past, the past of her humanity that is. He was dedicated on finding a cure and fixing her but he also needed to make sure she didn’t go over the edge. That she always remembered where she came from.
Before he could leave she stepped in front of him, gently blocking his path. He knew what this meant and at once he was shaking his head.
Emerson: Vio, how many times-
Violante: Just...just a little? I won’t bother you about it anymore this week.
He looked into her eyes, cherishing their verdant gaze. It wasn’t that he had a thing for green eyes but he adored the humanity that the color represented. He knew her vampire form had purple eyes that were hauntingly beautiful but as long as he could see the green of her eyes he knew she was in control.
Emerson: V, you have to learn to deny this urge, even if it is just a sip.
She whined as if she were a toddler denied her toy. Taking his hand and gripping it tight as if she wasn’t going to accept a no this time. In response to that he caressed her face, hating that her flesh was so cold to the touch but telling himself that this was still the same Vio, he just needed to keep her sane until he found a cure, that’s all.
Violante: Just a sip, please! Your blood is the only thing stopping me from, well, you know...
He did. Violante out hunting was his biggest fear. He knew with certainty that if she hunted and killed there would be no turning back. This was Violante, after all, a woman that thrilled in the chase of killing vampires, what if she suddenly found killing humans more amusing? There was always a darkness to her that he knew was not wise to deny. Now more so than ever.
Emerson: Just a sip, same as before, just a sip, Vio.
She grinned at that, knowing that she would get her way in the end and without waiting for further confirmation dug the points of her teeth into his flesh, enjoying each teaspoon of blood that he allowed her to have. He watched her with some disgust as she sucked, drooling blood all over her blouse without a care, moaning as if she were being pleased more intimately, her fingers tightening around his wrist letting him know she would finish when she decided she was finished. She had always pulled away, always restricted herself from hurting him, but he feared that one day she wouldn’t stop. His free hand found the dagger in his pocket just in case. Tonight wouldn’t be that night but he knew if he didn’t find the cure soon he might become her first victim...

Episode 8 ~ The Thirst
She wasn’t going to fight it because the fight had already been lost. She was here and the scent of him had dragged her here. She knew it was a trap. She knew it was Jana’s plan. She knew that Jana had captured him, cut him, and set him off knowing she’d follow and that she would ultimately submit to her thirst. Jana had known all this because she had been around long enough to know that the thirst always wins and Vio had known she was being manipulated but that didn’t matter. The blood mattered. Quenching her thirst, mattered.
Emerson tried pleading some more but Vio put her hand over his mouth, not caring.
Violante: It’ll just be a sip! No! Stop struggling Em! You’re making this harder for me!
She pleaded of him as he put up as much of a fight as he could but found her strength far greater than his. Soon, her lips were on his neck and she was taking what she felt she needed. Gnawing and sucking and slurping as if it were her last meal...

Episode 8 ~ The Thirst
That was not the voice of Jana, the crazy vampire that had started all of this, that was the voice of the woman he loved.
Emerson: Thank the watcher. I knew you’d come.
He said through ragged breathing, laughing some, loving the woman that had sensed him in peril and was now going to save him.
Emerson: She’s a strong one, old, one of those ones that works behind the scenes and-
Vio: Emerson...
The way she said his name had frozen his heart then and there. The tone of it was sad and haunting and at that very moment he realized he wasn’t running from Jana, at least not entirely, it had been Violante that had chased him.
Violante: Your scent Emerson. I-I couldn’t help but follow it.
Emerson: V? What are you saying?
Violante: Your taste is so sweet Emerson, you don’t understand! It’s so pure! It’s like raw power and joy in each mouthful. I need it.
Emerson laughed again but this time it was a sound that cracked and revealed a man that knew he was done for. This was a trap but not for him. For Vio. He knew she would break he always understood it was a matter of time really but he was sure she was stronger and that they had more time.
Emerson: Fight this, V, fight it! This is what she wants-
Violante: This is what I need.

Episode 8 ~ The Thirst
But as the night passed and the sun rose Alice never showed up.
Instead, a man clad in black appeared. He flipped out a phone, sleek black of course, and dialed a number for a more special kind of pick up.
Agent: I’ve found the perfect specimen...

Episode 8 ~ The Thirst
Narrator: He wasn’t sure how long he had been running for but doing so in the cold of winter and the dead of night didn’t make it any easier.
He also knew that there wasn’t a point in running. His attacker, a vampire, an older one, could catch him with ease but she had decided to play with her food. That, he hoped, would be her downfall. Violante would come, that he knew, and maybe together they could take her down?
He just had to stall for time and head for Vio’s home. That’s all he had to do. She would pick up on the danger and she could help.
Emerson: Shit...
He cursed, finally slowing down. His lungs burned with the chill of winter and his arm, the one the crazy vampire had cut, was throbbing with pain. It was a deep slice of course, deep enough that his blood was spilling down his arm and making him all the more easy to track for one of her kind.
Emerson: Shit, shit, shit...
He hated this. He wished she had just killed him and not humiliated him like he was some toy for a kitten because in reality, at this moment at least, that was all he was....

Episode 8 ~ The Thirst
When she was done she shot to her feet and looked down at her victim. The realization piercing her like a dagger to her heart. She was a woman who rarely cried and yet there she was, choking back sobs as she saw the one man she had loved lay nearly still before her, a pool of his blood soaking the snow beneath him.
Violante: I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I took too much! I made a mistake, a mistake, a mistake, a mistake...
She said perhaps a hundred times and in complete disbelief.
Jana: Love is always a mistake.
She heard but didn’t care. Not now. She put herself back on her knees but this time to inspect the damage she had done. He was breathing but she knew this wouldn’t be for long. For a moment she thought to give him her blood, that’s how it happens right? She could save him, they could be together forever and-
Jana: It is an illusion, really, a made up word we use to ignore the necessities of the relationships we form and why we form them. It’s a hard lesson for a woman to learn but one she must, eventually.
Violante: What do you want?
She asked between sobs. Finding that she wasn’t angry at Jana, not completely, this was her fault after all. She should have been stronger. She should have been ready for this. She should have killed her when she had the chance.
Jana: I want you to accept your reality
Violante: You want me to submit to Julius, whatever that means.
Jana didn’t respond right away, she took in a deep gasp of cold air and pushed it back out, as if her reply would be obvious.
For Violante she understood it was the only option now. She couldn’t control herself. Soon, she’d hunt again and since she was a former hunter she would know just where to look. She could kill Jana, yes, she thought that as well but then she would have only followed her urge. She was done following urges.
Violante: I will do it.
Jana: I knew you’d see things my way, eventually, everyone does.
But Violante also understood that the closer she got to Julius the easier it would be to kill him. Then, she could leave this planet content and satisfied.
As for Emerson and his dying body there was nothing left to be done for him. She thought of calling 911 at least but then that would scare away her witch friend. Maybe, she thought, maybe Alice could save him? She would leave him there on the chance that she might...

Episode 8 ~ The Thirst
He was only human and he could only push himself so far. Soon, he was on his hands and knees gasping for air, his body demanding he take a break and catch his breath but soon it would be the last breath he would take. She was coming. He didn’t need super hearing to know that. He could feel her presence behind him now, watching, smiling, and victorious.
Emerson: Get it over with leech. V-v-vio will make you pay for this.
???: Oh Em, I’m so sorry...
