New Elton John Original Song to Feature in “Never too Late”
- Doc premieres at Toronto International Film Festival before streaming from Dec. 13
“Elton John: Never too Late” will feature a new, original song from the titular subject, Deadline magazine reports.
The film, directed by R.J. Cutler and John’s husband, David Furnish, premieres Sept. 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It moves to the BFI London Film Festival Oct. 10; begins a limited run in U.S. and U.K. theaters Nov. 15; and streams on Disney+ from Dec. 13.
Based on fresh interviews combined with previously unseen footage and photographs, “Never too Late” follows John from his childhood through to his recently completed farewell tour.
“This is where you start to think about mortality, and it proves to be a powerful motivator to take stock,” John, 77, says.

Elton John breaks down, says he ‘doesn’t have much time left’

Elton John breaks down, says he ‘doesn’t have much time left’
Tumblr media
Sir Elton John has revealed he wept for 45 minutes straight as he recorded a song for his new album.
The music icon, who celebrated his 78th birthday yesterday, had a realisation about his own mortality while working on the track and began to fear he “doesn’t have much time left”.
The Grammy, Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe and Oscar winner has previously revealed he’s suffered sight loss, after an infection left him blind in his right eye, with “limited vision” in his left.
When This Old World is Done with Me
Speaking on this week’s episode of the SmartLess podcast – hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett – Sir Elton said he broke down while writing and recording ‘When This Old World is Done with Me’.
“I wrote a song at the end of the album and I just get the lyrics, Bernie Taupin’s lyrics,” he said.
“And so, I’m writing the verse, like, ‘Oh, this is really pretty.’
“Then I get to the chorus and of course it’s about my death. And when you get to my age, which is near 100, you think, ‘How much time have I got left?’
“You’ve got children, you’ve got a wonderful husband, you just think about mortality.
“I just broke down for 45 minutes and it’s all on film,” Sir Elton said.
The emotional scene was included on his recent documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late.
Multiple Grammy-winning US artist Brandi Carlile, who also appeared on the podcast, said: “I want everybody to see it because it’s really human, like deeply flawed and embarrassing. And the kind of shit that you do when you forget that there is a camera on is what’s really interesting.
“His voice started to shake and I thought, ‘Oh, he’s going, like he’s going to really go.’ And he went into a real moment,” said Carlile, who is married to English comedic actress, writer and director Catherine Shepherd.
Who Believes in Angels?
‘When This Old World is Done with Me’ will appear on Sir Elton’s forthcoming collaboration album with Carlile, Who Believes in Angels?
It will include ‘Never Too Late’, a song recorded for the Elton John: Never Too Late documentary.
The title track ‘Who Believes in Angels?’ was released as the album’s first official single last month.
The song’s music video, directed by David LaChapelle, depicts Sir Elton and Carlile performing the song in a Captain Fantastic pinball machine, with backup dancers impersonating Tina Turner and Little Richard.

It references Sir Elton’s 1975 album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.
It also includes the current single ‘Swing for the Fences’, which both singers have described as “an anthem for young gay kids”.
“‘Swing for the Fences’ was a little gem I took into the studio with me: I’m a gay woman, Elton’s a gay man and we both have families, and our dreams have come true,” Brandi Carlile explained.
“I was thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to write an anthem for young gay kids out there that calls them into a bigger, more elegant, more fabulous life?’
“Just like, ‘Go, go! Don’t let anything hold you back!’”
Who Believes in Angels? will be released in Australia next Friday through Island EMI Records.

Original Song: Is it Diane Warren’s time?
Tumblr media
The nominees are:
“El Mal” - Emilia Pérez
“The Journey” - The Six Triple Eight
“Like a Bird” - Sing Sing
“Mi Camino” - Emilia Pérez
“Never Too Late” - Elton John: Never Too Late
With her song “The Journey” from the movie The Six Triple Eight, Diane Warren earns her 16th Academy Award nomination, and 9th in the last 11 years. She has yet to notch a competitive victory (though she does have an honorary award from 2022).
As a former professional musician, allow me to be blunt. The reason she does not have a victory is because her songs are… to use a Gen Z word… mid. They’re generic pop tunes, similar in timbre and affect — solid in structure but void of any exceptional creativity. To be fair, many songs like this end up winning the Oscar for Best Song. But Warren has failed to produce a standout, other than perhaps “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” from Armageddon, which was a mainstream success.
There are many who think Academy voters will cast their vote for her just because she’s reached Susan Lucci status. I don’t buy that argument. Once again, I just don’t think her song is good enough to overcome the favorite (though it did win the SCL award for Best Song).
“El Mal” is a pivotal scene in Emilia Pérez and a key scene in Zoe Saldaña’s inevitable Oscar-winning performance. Whatever it lacks in musicality, it makes up for in significance to the film. And, for what it’s worth, it is at least interesting, creative, and powerful. “Mi Camino” is the more melodic piece from Emilia Pérez and is sung by pop superstar Selena Gomez. However, it lacks the emotional punch that “El Mal” has.
Elton John always has a chance because people love voting for Elton John. But my favorite is “Like a Bird” from Sing Sing, which I find to be the most musically interesting, engaging, and emotionally moving of all the nominated songs.
Who will win: “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez
But look out for: “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight
Who I’d vote for: “Like a Bird” from Sing Sing
If I could add one more: “Compress/Repress” from Challengers

The Weekly Gravy #229
Julius Caesar (1953) – **** Is it a stretch to say I owe my life to this film? Maybe so. But the fact that my father saw it at an impressionable age (he was 13 when it premiered) was doubtless a milestone in a career which would see him pursue a Ph. D. in English with a focus on Elizabethan and Jacobean literature, then accept a job at a college in a town in Kansas he’d never heard of, then find…

Elton John: Never Too Late ('12A'): Sanitised, But Ultimately Moving Documentary.
One Mann's Movies Film Review of "Elton John: Never Too Late". A surprisingly well-made and vibrant documentary of the great man. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Elton John: Never Too Late” (2024) (From the 2024 London Film Festival). I must admit that if there had been anything else that I really wanted to watch in this press review slot at the LFF then I would have probably chosen that. I *like* Elton John’s music… doesn’t nearly everyone? … but I wouldn’t define myself as a ‘fan’. But I have to say that I was really very…

This whole interview is awesome, but my absolute favorite moment is at 7:18
Bernie says "She knows that man the same way that I do, and I'm just happy to share him with me--I mean share him with her"
Interviewer: Either way!
Elton: The funny thing is I haven't slept with either of them
Brandi: There's still time!!
Elton: (under his breath) It's never too late
Brandi: IT'S NEVER TOO LATE!!!! omggggg lmao hahahahahaha the shenanigans

Note: I’m not including “Lavender’s Blue” from Cinderella (2015) because it was not written for the movie. It’s a 17th century English folk song.

Song Review: Elton John & Brandi Carlile - “Never too Late”
It’s never too late - or too early - for clichés. And Elton John and Brandi Carlile squeezed a ton of them into “Never too Late,” which is such a cliché, it’s John’s second song under the title.
Writing with Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt, John and Carlile allow themselves to sing of shooting the moon, dancing in graveyards, dwelling in the past, runaway brides, first dates, iron men and more, then set the sappy words to a sappy piano, synth strings and rhythm section arrangement.
Somewhere, Diane Warren is turning green.
The song serves as the theme from “Elton John: Never too Late,” which streams on Disney+ beginning Dec. 13.

Review: Elton John: Never Too Late - Thank You For All Your Lovin'
Tumblr media
Title: Elton John: Never Too Late Directed by: RJ Cutler, David Furnish Cinematographer: Jenna Rosher Year: 2024
Elton John: Never Too Late is a lovely compilation of archival footage, interview soundbites, animated re-imaginings and contemporary footage, documenting both the earliest years of John's career and the final year of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
Unfortunately, there's nothing new or enlightening in this documentary for fans already familiar with the ups and downs of Elton John's life and career. John has willingly spilled all of the sordid details in both his autobiography Me and the biopic Rocketman and while Never Too Late ticks off the greatest hits - John's first night at the Troubadour, his collaboration with John Lennon, his decades-long friendship with Bernie Taupin, the iconic Dodgers' Stadium gig - it is less interested in the past than it is in the future.
In one of his modern-day interviews with Alexis Petridis, John expresses an awareness of his mortality - a factor contributing to his decision to stop touring - but gives no indication that he wants to slow down. Footage shows John collaborating with energetic producer Andrew Watt on a new version of Tiny Dancer, promoting young musicians on his podcast Rocket Hour, and collaborating with the singer Dua Lipa for one of his final shows. Most importantly for John, is the time he is carving out for himself to spend with his husband and their two young sons.
Elton John: Never Too Late is a sweet tribute to a music legend. While there's little in it that we haven't already heard, there's never a bad time to sit back and listen to the Rocket Man's greatest hits.

ELTON JOHN ‘NEVER TOO LATE’ DOCUMENTARY ON DISNEY+
Captain Fantastic takes a stand and rocks down the Yellow Brick Road of His Past
The documentary on ICON/LEGEND Elton John, “NEVER TOO LATE,” debuts on Disney+ December 13th, 2024, to a record number of subscribers. Unlike the biopic ‘Rocketman,’ the doc is Elton in his own words as it chronicles his turbulent childhood to his self-described “five years of fun” 1970-1975, climaxing with his performance at Dodger Stadium in front of 100,000 fans. The full circle moment is Elton’s retirement from the road; the Farewell Tour in 2022, the final American date, Dodger Stadium. The movie co-directed by John’s husband, David Furnish and R.J. Cutler gives a more personal sense rather than some odd director who has no context with the subject.
Within those initial five years, Elton John with lyricist partner, Bernie Taupin, released a staggering thirteen albums. Many number one hits including their biggest songs to date: YOUR SONG, BENNIE & THE JEST, CANDLE IN THE WIND, CROCODILE ROCK, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, etc. You get the idea. Their 1975, “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy,” made the record books by being the first release to enter the charts at #1. It is a feat they would later repeat with ‘Rock of the Westies,’ a year later. The archival footage of those early days in this documentary is a music historian’s dream, most has never been released or seen. For a fan like me, it was glorious to relive the most magical and successful time in his career. Seeing how he composes songs (TINY DANCER, for this segment – the footage was actually first seen in ‘Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say Goodbye to Norma Jean and Other Things’ documentary in 1973), and the inner working of the band and studio recordings. The sequences jump back and forward again from the 70’s period to a countdown of the Dodger show in 2022. But don’t be fooled. Red roses and accolades are not all that is portrayed in this film. The rollercoaster and sometime abusive relationship with his manager and first love, John Reid. His introduction and deep dive into drug and alcohol addiction, his loneliness, longing for love, and final acceptance. I felt a great sense of empathy watching some of the later footage and hearing his own narrative. The most surprising and telling was the audio of the infamous interview with Rolling Stone magazine, where in 1976, Elton came out as bisexual.
Much can be learned and taken to heart about John. For one, he is one of the most resilient people in the music industry, the world, today. At age 77, he keeps moving forward, never looking back. Which is why, “NEVER TOO LATE,” is so important. Given his history, which at times, is sorrowful to watch, he never gave up. He kept touring, recording, giving all to his first true love, music. But at what cost? As his health issues began to mount, he finally asked for help and became clean and sober in 1990. Which is not depicted here. Maybe in part 2? It is clear what has become the most important thing to John is his home and family life. He and Furnish have two young sons and that’s where he wants to be. By his own admission, he’s pretty old to have become a father, and told the press he was retiring from the road to spend as much time with them and Furnish as he can in the years he has left. “This is where you start to think about mortality,” he says, adding that his sons “think about my mortality…because they know how old I am. I want to see them get married and have children, but I don’t think I’m gonna be around for that.”
“NEVER TOO LATE,” is not a perfect documentary. But it’s awfully good. All I can do as a fan is keep believing and hope there’s a Part 2 somewhere down the yellow brick road.
