“Elton John: Never too Late” will feature a new, original song from the titular subject, Deadline magazine reports.

The film, directed by R.J. Cutler and John’s husband, David Furnish, premieres Sept. 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It moves to the BFI London Film Festival Oct. 10; begins a limited run in U.S. and U.K. theaters Nov. 15; and streams on Disney+ from Dec. 13.

Based on fresh interviews combined with previously unseen footage and photographs, “Never too Late” follows John from his childhood through to his recently completed farewell tour.

“This is where you start to think about mortality, and it proves to be a powerful motivator to take stock,” John, 77, says.

Captain Fantastic takes a stand and rocks down the Yellow Brick Road of His Past

The documentary on ICON/LEGEND Elton John, “NEVER TOO LATE,” debuts on Disney+ December 13th, 2024, to a record number of subscribers. Unlike the biopic ‘Rocketman,’ the doc is Elton in his own words as it chronicles his turbulent childhood to his self-described “five years of fun” 1970-1975, climaxing with his performance at Dodger Stadium in front of 100,000 fans. The full circle moment is Elton’s retirement from the road; the Farewell Tour in 2022, the final American date, Dodger Stadium. The movie co-directed by John’s husband, David Furnish and R.J. Cutler gives a more personal sense rather than some odd director who has no context with the subject.

Within those initial five years, Elton John with lyricist partner, Bernie Taupin, released a staggering thirteen albums. Many number one hits including their biggest songs to date: YOUR SONG, BENNIE & THE JEST, CANDLE IN THE WIND, CROCODILE ROCK, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, etc. You get the idea. Their 1975, “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy,” made the record books by being the first release to enter the charts at #1. It is a feat they would later repeat with ‘Rock of the Westies,’ a year later. The archival footage of those early days in this documentary is a music historian’s dream, most has never been released or seen. For a fan like me, it was glorious to relive the most magical and successful time in his career. Seeing how he composes songs (TINY DANCER, for this segment – the footage was actually first seen in ‘Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say Goodbye to Norma Jean and Other Things’ documentary in 1973), and the inner working of the band and studio recordings. The sequences jump back and forward again from the 70’s period to a countdown of the Dodger show in 2022. But don’t be fooled. Red roses and accolades are not all that is portrayed in this film. The rollercoaster and sometime abusive relationship with his manager and first love, John Reid. His introduction and deep dive into drug and alcohol addiction, his loneliness, longing for love, and final acceptance. I felt a great sense of empathy watching some of the later footage and hearing his own narrative. The most surprising and telling was the audio of the infamous interview with Rolling Stone magazine, where in 1976, Elton came out as bisexual.

Much can be learned and taken to heart about John. For one, he is one of the most resilient people in the music industry, the world, today. At age 77, he keeps moving forward, never looking back. Which is why, “NEVER TOO LATE,” is so important. Given his history, which at times, is sorrowful to watch, he never gave up. He kept touring, recording, giving all to his first true love, music. But at what cost? As his health issues began to mount, he finally asked for help and became clean and sober in 1990. Which is not depicted here. Maybe in part 2? It is clear what has become the most important thing to John is his home and family life. He and Furnish have two young sons and that’s where he wants to be. By his own admission, he’s pretty old to have become a father, and told the press he was retiring from the road to spend as much time with them and Furnish as he can in the years he has left. “This is where you start to think about mortality,” he says, adding that his sons “think about my mortality…because they know how old I am. I want to see them get married and have children, but I don’t think I’m gonna be around for that.”

“NEVER TOO LATE,” is not a perfect documentary. But it’s awfully good. All I can do as a fan is keep believing and hope there’s a Part 2 somewhere down the yellow brick road.

Never Too Late (2024)

Hello, dear friends. I went and saw Elton John's 'Never Too Late' in the cinema last night! I loved it so incredibly much. I couldn't sit still! If I had the means to, I'd watch it every single day. But, alas, I must wait until December. Bummer. I need the entire Madison Square Garden segment on YouTube! I loved that part. It felt like you were actually there with the surround sound of the cinema. There's also a photograph in it that I can't seem to find anywhere! I love the photo. Maybe I could snag a photo once it's on streaming. I hope there's a DVD release. I'd recommend watching it. As much as I am passionate for Elton and his music, I may be a tad biased. But goodness it's wonderful.

Francis hums, removing his hat before placing his arm back over her as they cuddle up on the couch.  It’s not the most comfortable, he would be fine going to bed but he has a plan in mind for tonight.  He’s wanted to do this for a while, but he’s always been too exhausted. “It’s quite alright, I do get to come home to you, after all.”  He presses a kiss to the top of her head, his lips lingering for a moment.

“Always the charmer, huh?” She quips, though the way her cheeks flush show just how charmed she is just by the simple sentence.  She has always found solace in his loving words, no matter how cheesy they were.

It’s never too late - or too early - for clichés. And Elton John and Brandi Carlile squeezed a ton of them into “Never too Late,” which is such a cliché, it’s John’s second song under the title.

Writing with Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt, John and Carlile allow themselves to sing of shooting the moon, dancing in graveyards, dwelling in the past, runaway brides, first dates, iron men and more, then set the sappy words to a sappy piano, synth strings and rhythm section arrangement.

Drago-nita - Jamie’s left to take care of Trevor’s lizard while the forward is on a road trip. Things don’t go as planned, so he calls the reader for assistance.

Island Of Love - Jamie falls head over heels for a girl he never expected to love. But they’re from two different worlds, and he can’t stay away from his forever.

Lady May - SongFic, a recollection of the times the reader was Jamie’s rock, leading him to one fateful decision.

The Ugly Duckling - being written, angst and fluff, title’s kinda self explanatory.. gonna make you guys wait for it anyway.

Orange, Orange, Orange - The reader visits Jamie and Trevor during playoffs only to receive a rather startling surprise.

Blind Dating - Jamie is new in town and managed to get himself set up on a blind date. The reader isn’t too sure about him. At least not at first.

Smile Again - Nico’s injured and the reader has to leave town for a week. She returns to her lover in a horrible state, and there’s not much she can do but comfort him back to contentment.

It’s My Footwork - Knee surgery leaves Nico’s leg a bit weak, so he seeks out creative conditioning to get him back on track.

Soulmates ‘N All That - SongFic, a summary of the meeting, the dating, and the marriage.

Dearest Nico, - Two strangers falling in love over the exchange of letters and phone calls. Loosely based off of the song “Travelin’ Soldier” by the Dixie Chicks. But at the same time it’s really not.

Comfy - Nico comes home from a hockey game ready to relax, and though the reader isn’t in a bath mood, they’ll gladly sit outside the tub and talk all evening with him.

Too Much To Drink - The reader went to a simple bachelorette party and took part in the festivities, especially the drinking. And of course, Nico comes to the rescue.

Sun Days - Enjoying a perfect day on the New Jersey beaches with Nico and the team.

When you Wake - Nico went out with the boys, and the reader is left with a surprise when the Hughes brothers bring him home far less than sober.

Wishing For Angels - The reader comes home from work one evening and spends the night watching early Christmas movies with Nico.

Light My Love - SongFic, An art major and a hockey player who’s mind works a mile a minute. He’s her inspiration.

The Best Recovery - The reader’s overwhelmed, and slips into a nonverbal state for the night. Mitch is waiting at home to provide comfort and reassurance.

Noise Cancelling - The reader can’t hide their Amazon Wishlist from Mitch for forever, but this is by far the best gift.

Depths Of Love - Loss and grief. Acceptance and moving on. Mitch lost the love of his life, only to realize he doesn’t have to continue alone.

College Despair - The reader is overwhelmed with assignments, and needs a break. Cole just got back from a roadie, and needs quality time.

Misunderstand Us - The reader is invited out to the lake house. Quinn forgets to mention that he told Cole about them, and Cole’s rather forward introduction causes a feud between himself and the reader. Until the truth comes out. Enemies to lovers.

She’s Taller - Cole fell for the girl across the street. There’s just one thing that held him back. His height. Turns out, that might not be an issue for her at all.

Linear Progress - Cole has just returned from an injury, and can’t get out of his own head about the fact that he’s struggling.
