MRAU: The King and the Reaper
(This is the telling from this, @elleleh’s AU, and artwork, approved by her. Please go follow her for more of these beautiful stories and artwork!!)
***
A loud clatter of the prison door sent it's occupant shying away from the noise, and into a nearby corner. Shivering, the man looked akin to a stray dog, cowering in the filthy cell. The visitor stood tall in the dusty shadows. A dim red glow appeared at his lips, hinting at the sneer. The stream of smoke replaced the glow, and his expression was hidden once more. But it had been enough to identify the spectre.
“Reaper."
Purring, the scarred man kneeled before his captor.
"You know me."
"Of course. You're the second most feared man in these parts."
Cocking his head to the side, he let out a tsk.
"Second? Someone must have heard something." His face shifted from bravado to intensity, and he leaned in over the man. "Tell me."
Even as the man shivered and cowered away, he shook his head.
"Not even to you, Reaper."
Eye's squinted in frustration, and the glow from the cigarette in his mouth lit them up.
"You will tell me."
Resolute, the old drunkard stood surprisingly firm.
"Better death at your hands, than at his."
Removing the cigarette from his lips, he extinguished it under foot. As he spoke again, the smoke slipped from his lips.
"We'll see about that."
***
It was a cold night on the coast of northern Vale. A sound of fluttering wings startled a drunk man stumbling out of a nearby inn, and he turned to the source. Emerging from the black, a darkly clad man with a scarred visage, rose a brow to him. The charm at his throat glinted in the moonlight, and the scar caught the shadows unnaturally.
The drunk tried to look behind him, to spot the source of the sound, but the imposing figure stopped before him.
"Light?"
Shaken from his stupor, the drunk dug into his pockets, producing a lighter. Snagging the flimsy tool from him, the larger man puffed at his cigarette. Tucking the lighter back into the other man's shirt, he turned away. Without a backwards glance, he threw a parting statement.
"Your ass is hanging out."
Still confused by the interaction, he let out a 'huh?' before the words connected with the cool breeze he felt, and he reached for his belt loops to pull up what remained of his dignity.
Pressing deeper into the port town, Qrow took in the sights. There was only one ship docked at the port, he had confirmed, but it was obvious that most of the men were stretching their legs on land. A skeleton crew had remained aboard. But he hadn't wanted the sober crew tending the ship, he wanted the sloshed lowlifes that filled the less than reputable inns.
A breeze whipped down the road from the harbor, carrying with it a misting of rain- a warning of the storm to come. Turning up his coat jacket, its large lapel kept the almost freezing water off his neck. A large crash caught his attention, followed by laughter. He had found his target.
He made no attempt to hide his presence, opening the door with an air of certainty. The men within sobered immediately. One let out a soft curse, and they all straightened up. Qrow squinted after them, and after taking a puff on his cigarette, stepped further in and out into the brighter light.
The men heaved a collective sigh. He raised a black brow at their responses, but it was the man who let out the curse that his attention was most drawn to.
Stepping up next to his space at the bar, Qrow threw down a few lien.
"Seems you mistook me for someone else."
"Got that right, pal." The man sneered at him.
Qrow sat beside him. "Well, the least I can do is pay for a round of drinks for you all."
Gesturing to the barkeep, he bought them all another round, and himself a whiskey.
"Fair enough. Guess you're alright."
"That was a pretty strong reaction, buddy. Who's got you all running scared?" A disarming smile, and a hearty laugh was enough to embolden the young man at the bar.
Slurring his words slightly, his new friend rounded on him.
"Our captain. Terror of the seas."
Qrow parroted amazement.
"You mean you all sail with the Pirate King?" He forced a little bit of awe into the last few words.
Knowing that this man had most likely signed his own death warrant with those words meant little to Qrow. If you're crew wasn't loyal, they weren't your crew. The young man pressed on, pride filling his chest.
"Sure do! He's down at the harbor still. Hear he don't leave the ship."
"You hear?" The lanky man's heart sank- this might be another dead end.
"Well, I just finished my first 'tour' of the ports, if ya will."
Ah. Fresh blood, drunk on their success. He wasn't going to last long, with or without Qrow speeding up the process. Those types never did.
"So, then, I'd guess you would have to go to the ship itself to meet him, huh?"
"Good luck. He don't take to visitors kindly. And he rarely talks, let alone notices anyone but his crew."
A small doubt nibbled at his brain. Luck wasn't his forte, but he hadn't needed either type on his side yet.
"That's not a man, that's a legend."
The smaller man scoffed into his drink.
"That's only cause you haven't met him. See there was this stowaway, see..."
Plied with drinks and encouragement, the young man spun tales that even his other crewmates would have hard times believing, but within those stories, crumbs of reality were hidden. And Qrow was good at piecing together the crumbs.
An hour later, he feigned great exhaustion, and squared away his tab and lodging. Saying his farewells, he entered his room and locked it. Kicking off his shoes and removing his coat, Qrow flopped onto the bed, fully dressed. It was one less step he'd need in the morning.
His appointment was an early one.
***
It was still dark when Qrow arose, but the edges of the overcast sky were starting to redden. The ground was slushy under foot, and the eaves dripped icy water, with one particular drop finding itself between his coat collar and the back of his neck.
Growling at his luck, he pressed out into the dim light. A few men stood outside the doors of the inns, uttering insincere farewells to ladies of the night, while others stumbled away from their perches at bars, empty bottles in hand. A few years prior, the draws of the night might have been tempting, but now, he just wanted to get the mission over with so he could go home.
Pulling a cigarette from his coat, he patted at his pockets again for a missing lighter. Cursing it's absence, he stepped to a nearby lantern and made use of it's fire.
The crew were beginning their trek to the ship slowly, stumblingly, steadily, and Qrow quickly outpaced them. However, as he neared the dock, the crew grew steadily more sober, having manned the ship through the night. His presence was quickly noted.
A flurry of sword points and cocked pistols steadied themselves at his bemused expression.
"I'm merely an... ambassador, if you will, here to speak with the Pirate King."
The sky was steadily reddening behind the heavy gray clouds, casting it's unearthly pall onto the boat and it's alert crew. A sneering voice queried, unseen over the rails of the ship.
"What would he want to talk to you about, Reaper?"
A spindly silhouette emerged at the top of the deck, backlit by the bloody sky.
"From what I hear, you don't talk much."
Curling a corner of his lips, Qrow jeered at the oily creature at the top of the gangplank. His eyes lit up with a pull of his cigarette.
"Mainly because you're not the one I'm here to talk to. Besides," the imposing young man, leaned back, moving unaffectedly by the surrounding weaponry, "from what I hear, he isn't much of a fan of others speaking for him."
Shrugging, he pulled out another unlit cigarette, using the smoldering butt of his previous one to light it.
"But I guess that's your funeral."
***
The dogs had been slow in returning to the ship, and it's captain was not pleased. It had been a while since they had been back at Harbor's End, he knew, but the itch to be gone had been there since they had docked a week prior.
His face and fingers felt cold, and he was desperate for the heat of the flames to warm them again.
Absently, two days into their respite, he considered marshalling the forces to pillage the town, but talked himself out of the pleasure. He had resorted to obsessing over the condition of his ship instead.
So when, on the day of departure, the men were slow to return, his mood had further soured. The sky was aglow red, an ill omen, when he finally withdrew the curtains on his cabin. Growling, the King of Pirates ground the heel of his palm into the aching empty socket. All signs led to bad luck for the crew and it's planned setting off. He pulled a cigarette and lit it. It was going to be one of those days. If he didn't end up putting down one of the dogs before sunset, he'd be amazed.
And then he heard it.
That damned Dreg running his mouth. This Bird of Prey wasn't going to even make it to sunrise.
Speaking as with any sort of right to command. The captain didn't care to who or what about- he was tired of that slime on his ship.
The door opened without a sound, and he emerged on deck. Of the crew still at the port, all surrounded an unwelcome visitor, weapons at the ready. Dreg had not heard or seen him emerge, and his lips curled in disgust.
"... But I guess that's your funeral."
The visitor spoke with confidence, but sounded young. Out of clear sight angle, the only things ascertainable were the dark clothes and hair, along with a thin stream of smoke. He'd make short work of the interloper when he was done.
As he moved forward, the captain made no attempt to hide his footfalls. The rest of the crew noticed it, but Dreg pressed on, oblivious to his fate. Jeering, the dogs hooped and whistled, and the fool felt emboldened.
Unsheathing his sword, he drew up behind him even as he continued to seal his fate.
"I'm not going to waste the captain's time with a minion like you!"
Like a mouse discerning it's fate as a hawk's shadow falls upon it during it's last moments, Dreg spotted the imposing shadow fall upon him. Before he could turn, the Pirate King's sword slipped effortlessly through him. Trembling hands, the slimy cur turned to his captain, muttering out protests to an indifferent expression.
His words became distant, as his eyes rolled back into his head, and he slid off the blade. Crumpled to the ground, the captain used a boot toe to encourage the carcass to tumble off the gangplank and into the waters below.
The crew growled and hooted when the body hit the water. Pulling a cloth from his side, he wiped clean the blade before he would turn attention to the visitor, and the men turned their glee in the same direction.
Sheathing his sword, he turned his gaze to the young man, and froze. In the early sunrise, the charm around his neck glowed as red as the eyes staring back at him.
Steadily, he stepped down the gangplank, stopping a few steps away.
He took in the scarred visage of the man before him. For the first time in many years, the captain wasn't sure of what to do next. A pause passed between them, and the crew, expecting immediate bloodshed died down.
The Reaper knew who stood before him, and the King of Pirates held no doubts either. What time had passed for them both, for their titles to mean more than their names?
"Qrow."
A raven brow rose, waiting.
"You're alive."
To say he was surprised would have been a lie. And to blame him would be a greater one.
The young man withdrew the cigarette from his mouth and extinguished it under foot.
"I'm just as surprised to see you drawing breath," he paused, and Kite Branwen saw him roll his shoulders, before forcing out the final word. "Father."

Qrows Ruby’s Father
Okay, First off, SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THE END OF RWBY SEASON 6, Second, I would prefer this to be a conversation and not an argument, so during this (probably long) post I am going to be stating theories, evidence etc but I am also going to posting the evidence against them, so its fair. At the end of the day this is all just theory making. I will state that I support this theory, although I have no problem with anyone who doesn’t. You believe whatever you want to believe, I’m not going to fight you over it. Finally, this post is going to basically be an essay as I am going to try put everything together that I’ve seen, their counter arguments and a bunch of images.
Point A
So for point A I’m going to state that throughout the series when it comes to the younger characters, they very much seem to follow the looks and traits of their parents, especially when it comes to what clothes they wear, what colours those clothes are generally their fighting style has at least some hints of their parents.
The Schnee Family
One of the best examples is the Schnee Family. As you can see in the picture the entire family has white hair (although I believe that WorstFatherTM dyed his), the same skin tone and in general they all wear smart, formal clothing that is coloured white. The entire family has also seemed to inherit blue eyes. Personality wise, Weiss began out as very formal, closed of from emotion and rather stuck up, which she likely comes from being in a very upper class, rich family. When it comes to fighting styles, we don’t have any information on whether either of Weiss’s parents were huntresses or had a fighting style etc, however Weisses family owning one of the biggest dust companies definitely contributes to her use of dust. It is also likely that Weiss chose her weapon and a lot of her elegant fighting style techniques from her older sister Winter, who she seems to have looked up to when growing up.
The Belladonna Family:
Next is the Belladonna Family. The entire family has black hair, blake has also inherited Kali’s ears and seemingly her long hair with bangs that cover her forehead. While from Ghira she has more seemed to inherit a sense of dress code when it comes to clothes that reveal a bit of skin. The family also have the same cat like, yellow eyes.Blake also follows the same color scheme as her family, With the White, Black and purple clothing. Personality wise, Blake has seemed to inherit the trait of wanting to fight for justice and rights for her race, just like her parents. She also has a strong sense of brotherhood when it comes to the White fang. One thing I however cannot connect are fighting styles, as Blake seems to be more of a rogue/finesse type of Fighter where as Ghira is definitely a head on brawler, Kali doesn’t really have a fighting style, she just hits people over the head with trays.
The Ren Family:
Ren and his family. When it comes to inherited traits, from season 1-3 Ren has a similar short hair style to is mother, An, he has also inherited her pink eyes, however he has also inherited his dads, Li, black hair. From season 4-6 he has also grown his hair out longer and is now at least a similar length to what his fathers hair was. Rens personality definitely seems to have at least a bit of each of his parents, most of the time he is calm, collected and thoughful. Ren follows the colour scheme of his parents where it comes to the colour of his clothing, with the greens, blacks and gold-ish outlines. Ren has not seemed to pick up a fighting style from either of his parents, from what we know it seems like only Rens father was a fighter. However Ren didn’t inherit using a bow like his father. Personally I would put this down to that her didn’t have his father to teach him how to use the bow and he also didn’t like to look back on his past due to how terrible it was, so he likely learned his fighting style from scratch. The Xiao Long Family:
Like everyone else, Yang has inherited a lot from her parents. Yang has blonde hair just like her father but it seems to be a darker compared to Tai’s. This is likely due to Ravens hair being Black and making it a darker shade, her hair is also very similar to Ravens in both its length and style. Yang has inherited Ravens deep red eyes, but only when she becomes angry, usually her eyes are purple, which is a colour mix between Tai’s blue eyes and Ravens red. Personality wise Yang seems to follow more in Ravens footsteps, fighting more aggressively, using her anger as a funnel in fights. She has also seemed to inherit Ravens lighter skin tone and complexion. Yangs clothing colour scheme is very close to Tai’s with brown, orange and pale colours. She has also copied his red Bandanna like material wrapped around his arm, however choosing to wrap it around her leg instead. Her fighting style is definitely inherited from Tai, as we have seen them both sparing and training together, this is likely due to the fact that Tai was the only one around when Yang was younger, as Raven wasn’t present.
The Rose Family:
In the picture above we can see A LOT of Ruby in Summer. The short hair style, Silver eyes, Light skin. However from this image it does seem like Summers hair is a straight red colour, Where as if we look at Ruby, her hair seems to go from a Black to a dark red towards the tips of her hair. Ruby even dresses the same with the cape and high cut clothing, The inside of Summers cape being a very similar red as to Ruby’s entire cape, outfit and weapon. Ruby even seems to inherit Summers petal effect, However we don’t see anything from Tai, there are no prominent inherent body features like skin tone, hair or eye colour (granted that the silver eyes are story driven and likely a more inheritable feature) Ruby also doesn’t seem to follow a colour scheme similar to Tai, nor wear similar clothing. However, if we look at Qrow..
Qrow has Black hair just like his sister with hints of grey throughout it. He also has bangs in front of his forehead just like Summer and Ruby. Qrows dark hair could explain how dark Ruby’s hair is. Qrows skin tone is also similar to that of Ruby’s, or it is at least a lot lighter than Tai’s. Clothing colours are similar with dark colour, especially black and red, The cape is also a feature of Qrow however Ruby’s cape is very must tailored to be like Summers compared to Qrows. When it comes to Ruby’s personality, ruby has been seen to be quite stubborn at times, but thats only when it comes to doing whats right. Its kind of thought that out of the four members of team STRQ, Summer was likely the Kindest, most bright person in the group, likely followed by Tai, this could go a lot towards Ruby personality as Ruby is always one who seems to be holding out hope and never giving up. Ruby’s fighting style is exactly like Qrows because he is the one who trained her, just like Tai trained Yang. This is likely due to not only Ruby wanting to be like her uncle by having the same fighting style and weapon, but also because Tai would of likely been busy training Yang in his fighting style at the time. This could also be down to Ruby being physically strong enough to be a brawler like Tai and Yang. Point A Summary: Every Character Inherits something from each of their parents, however Ruby only seems to inherit something from Summer and not Tai. Where as if you match Summer and Qrow together it makes a pretty good case on how Ruby looks and acts. Points A Counter Argument: As far as I have seen for a counter argument on this point, people point that Ruby’s fighting style has only come from her looking up to her uncle and following his steps, which does make sense. However so far I have not seen an explanation as to why she doesn’t seemingly have any of Tai’s inheritable body traits (feel free to tell me if there is one)
Point B
Point B is a quick and short one that has a really quick counter argument. Qrows song, Bad Luck Charm. Bad Luck Charm is about Qrows semblance of bad luck and how it effects the people he’s close too. The song in general talks about everyone near him, however there is one line, “ You don't want the burden of my name” that can be more turned towards someone a lot closer to qrow compared to anyone else, likely a family member. Taking on and using someones name, specifically their last name is most likely due to either marrying said person, or being their child. This continues on with the theory of Qrow being Ruby’s dad with the idea that qrow is terrified of his semblance and maybe even superstitious of it, Possibly believing that by even inheriting his last name, Ruby could be cursed with bad luck, let alone even being in Ruby’s life as a father figure.
Point B Summary:
Some Lines in Bad Luck charm could be giving hints towards such things
Point B Counter Argument:
Jeff Williams, the creator of the RWBY Soundtrack has stated that none of the songs are Canon material and they are just made by him from scratch
Point C
Point C is a continuation from point B, Qrows semblance. Qrows semblance is literal bad luck, not just to himself but everyone around him. And he no control over it. However he is close to is going to experience it. This has most prominently come up so far in his fight with Tyrian, but theres definitely other moments of it being shown. Because his semblance is uncontrollable, having anyone close leads to them having bad things happen around to them, this loops over to my previous point that if Qrow was around Ruby as a father when she was a lot younger, this could of caused a lot of bad situations. One theory that I’ve seen a lot is that Qrow may feel he himself is responsible for Summers death (leading him to become an alcoholic) and you could believe in this whether you ship Qrow & Summer or whether you don’t, the theory doesn’t rely on them being together. However, if we go with the idea that Qrow is Ruby’s father, being close to someone with such a semblance you believed led to the death of not only your loved one, but the mother of your child, would be no easy task. It would be an a lot better cause to keep your distance from the daughter, to try spare her from not only the semblance, but the truth at what Qrow believes the cause of Summers Death
Point C Summary:
Qrows Semblance makes qrow not want to be near anyone, but even more specifically Ruby due to the possibility he believe his semblance had a hand in Summers Death
Point C Counter Argument:
Qrow could still feel responsible for Summers death even if Qrow was not in a relationship with Summer. This goes the same with him trying to stay away from Ruby as much so that he doesn’t effect her life.
Point D
Point D is about the 3 photo’s we see of Team STRQ, but mainly about Qrows photo in particular.
Tai’s home photo:
As you can see, Tai’s home photo of the team is in pretty much pristine condition and is framed, there’s no markings on the photo and it doesn’t seem to have suffered any type of damage. Where as Qrows:
Has definitely seen a lot more use. For starters the colours on the picture have began to fade, likely meaning its been out in the open air a lot or at lead has been looked at a lot. The material the picture is on is also bent meaning its likely always carried in a pocket or something similar, which makes sense as Qrow is not the type of person to settle in one singular spot. Next is the ring over Summer, this is likely to be either a glass or bottle ring from where they have been places on top of the image. Specifically the bottle or glass would be covering Summers face, which could suggest that Qrow doesn’t want to look at Summer or maybe even can’t bear to see her (this goes back to him feeling responsible) Next are the droplets on the page, I believe these can be seen as one or two things, tears or drink stains. If drink stains, it could mean that Qrow has been looking over the photo while he’s drunk, or even looking at it may have started causing him to drink even more. If they are tear stains then it could be seen as a sign of mourning, grief or regret, and Qrow covering up Summers face becomes even more meaningful. Point D Summary: Qrow carries around a damaged picture of team STRQ which shows a lot of connotations that he has dealt with some emotions over the picture Point D Counter Argument: Qrow could just be sad about the collapse of his team, or solely over Summers death.
Point E
For point E I want to Solely talk about Qrow and his line of work. Qrow is likely considered a master huntsmen. Due to the clan he was born in he has been trained almost all his life to not only fight Grimm, but also other people as well. He is highly trained and likely a major threat to almost anyone he faces, he is also affiliated with Ozpin and has been working with him for years. As he does work with Ozpin, this essentially puts him on Salems kill list as one way or another he is a threat to her plans. We also know that Salem will do pretty much anything to make her plans successful, so if qrow was found to have a daughter, who also happened to have Silver eyes, its likely that Ruby would of been targeted by Salem a lot sooner, most definitely when she was younger. This would of destroyed the possibility of a silver eyes warrior getting in Salems way and hurting qrow in the process Point E Summary: Qrow would of stayed away from due to his line of work so he wouldn’t put her in danger Point E Counter Argument: The Same can be said whether Qrow is Ruby’s father or not
Point F
For this point I want to talk about the timeline between Yang and Ruby’s birth. From what we can tell from the timeline we’ve been given, their births goes in an order similar to this: Tai and Raven are together - Yang is born - Raven leaves - Tai goes through grief and evidently gets with Summer - Ruby is Born - Summer dies According to their ages, Ruby is between a year and a half to two years younger than Yang, I believe, according to their birthdays, they are 1 year and 8 months apart. Now this is where my knowledge gets a bit Hazy so please forgive me, but I believe it takes 9-12 months to fully conceive a baby. Which means that within 8 months, maybe even less, Tai moves on from someone who he loves and had a child with, to someone else and then also has another child. Personally that seems very out of character for someone lie Tai but then that also could possibly come down to the stages of Grief. The 8 months also drops considerably when you consider that Raven most definitely wouldn’t of left home directly after giving birth to Yang. If you consider that it can take up to or over 2 months for someone to recover their full strength after giving birth, Raven may have not left for 3-4 months, which means Tai would of have to gotten with Summer with 4-6 months, which in my mind is rather ridiculous. Point F Summary: Tai would of had to move on very quickly and thats a very shitty thing to do Point F Counter Point: I can’t think of one for this tbh, let me know if you can
Point G
Qrows Closeness to Ruby, For point G I would like to talk about how close Qrow is to Ruby, this is kinda a hit or miss point as it depends on each individuals persons opinion. However, I believe I and a lot of people who think of Qrow being Ruby’s dad, think that Qrow is a lot closer to Ruby then he is with Yang. Which could seem odd since Qrow is physically blood related to Yang. Of course Blood doesn’t mean everything, however from what the show actually gives us, Qrow and Yang don’t even have that many direct conversations and when they talk with each other someone else is usually present (Qrow, Yang and Ruby playing video games comes to mind) Where as Qrow and Ruby have definitely had several personal and more alone conversations comparatively. This shows that Qrow is definitely a lot more in contact with Ruby over Yang
Point G Summary:
Qrow is a lot closer with Ruby than comparatively to someone who is blood related, like Yang
Point G Counter Argument:
This could be due to Yang being older, Qrow may feel he needs to support Ruby more than Yang due to her being Younger, Yang also has a close relationship with her father Tai, meaning she likely doesn’t need to converse with Qrow in such ways often.
Point H
I wanna leave point H up to @anthurak with their amazing post on what happened during Season 6 and what Qrow and Ruby’s relationship is like in comparison to other parents https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard/blog/anthurak/182407206555
My Counters to what people say against this Theory:
This is just going to be a bunch of stuff I’ve seen written against the theory that I’d also like to discuss.
“Monty, Miles & Kerry have all debunked this theory” - True, that does mean its not likely to be cannon, however there has been cases in the past where creators will say something will not happen and it eventually does. But, whether it happens or not. Its still no reason to fight over it, just let people be, ship what they want and theorize what they want.
“Why would they add this? it seems unnecessary to the plot” - Personally I don’t think any kind of character development is unnecessary and anything that changes the character in some form is welcome. But just as an example if it was revealed that Qrow was Ruby’s father, we could have several things like these:
It could lead qrow and ruby to have more heart felt conversation, including a deep conversation about Summer
It would take the weight of the secret of both Tai's and Qrows conscience it could lead qrow to taking more adult responsibility and further his journey of not going back to the booze.
It could make Ruby and Yangs relation even stronger because it says "we'll still be sisters even if we're not related"
It would bring conflict along with resolution. Conflict: Ruby finds out, it makes her question a lot of things and look for answers Resolution: She ends up confronting Qrow about it, learns more about his and summers relationship, why the hid it etc. It could also continue on with Ruby telling Tai that she know sand they go from there, or even telling Yang and they have a conversation about how it doesn't change anything about them being sisters
There’s a lot of possibilities that could lead to great character development and could make characters a lot more conscious of their choices.
But yeh, thats about all I got so far. If you read the entire thing then I very much appreciate it. I felt the sudden urge to write this after getting my first ever Tumblr hate mail, so thank you random anon! If anyone wants to have Conversation about any of this with me, whether you believe the theory or not then I am more than willing, as long as it doesn’t turn into a rage contest.

A Midsummer Rest
(This lovely drawing is by @ellelehman Now, she had told me to remind you all to repost and ask permission before using her art for anything. This fic is dedicated to the queen of Flown North, and I hope she and you enjoy!)
It was the middle of Summer in Vale, a time for the students of remnants to take a breather and enjoy themselves til next semester. Many of the teams had left to see family, make the most of their limited time, or just do absolutely nothing. One such team was team STRQ.
Raven had planned to return to her tribe, but decided to instead hang around Tai a little longer. For some reason, she couldn't think about leaving him for a week let alone the entire Summer!
Tai planned to make the most of his Summer break, and took Raven to do what could be summed up as a "list of fun". To her dismay, she couldn't bring herself to tell her enthusiastic boyfriend no. Thus, they left. This left the only two other teammates to do as they please.
Qrow had expected Summer to want to do something similar, but instead the two hung around and did pretty much nothing. Currently, the two were in there dorm. Qrow laying on his bed and Summer using his chest as support so she could read a book.
"Hey shortstack?" Qrow asks.
"Yes Qrow? What's up?" Summer placed a bookmark in her book.
"I was wondering if you we were going to do anything this break. You usually are off the walls as much as Tai when it comes to wanting to "carpe diem" as he puts it."
"Weeellll I wasn't really going to do anything this time. You worked really hard this year, and I figured you'd want to spend the break "vegging out" as you usually put it."
"Huh. Is that so?" Qrow realized what he's going to do. "How about we have a picnic tomorrow?"
Summer perked up, and looked at him with surprise. "A picnic? Really?"
"Yeah, could be fun."
"Okay! Sure! Let's do that!" Summer was overjoyed. Seeing Summer that happy had Qrow slightly grinning. How he got this girl is beyond him. Maybe there is fortune to be had for the unfortunate...
Tomorrow arrives. Qrow and Summer began walking in the afternoon, and got there a little later. The lovebirds settled down on a nice spot where the trees were just dense enough to block most of the sunlight.
The basket was filled with various sandwiches, chips, water, and cookies (Summer likes cookies). The two chowed down, talking about what they plan to do after break, funny stories that they usually kept to themselves, and what the other two team members were up to.
"I can't believe Tai managed to get Raven to stand next to the fluffy mascot! It's so cute!" Summer showed Qrow the picture.
The picture was of a very enjoyed Tai hugging a beowolf mascot with a extremely livid Raven. She looked like she was ready to kill everyone there.
Qrow lost his shit. Almost choking on the sandwich he was eating. He bellowed in laughter to the picture in pure joy.
"You HAVE to give me the picture shortstack! I think I found my new wallpaper for the year!"
Summer shook her head, "What kind of a team leader would I be if I did that?"
"The best one."
"No Qrow." She crossed her arms.
Qrow huffs, accepting defeat. He still however, will not let her live this down.
After finishing the food, the two walked around the forest for a bit. The two came across a beautiful looking tree. In fact, this tree was the same tree where the two professed eachothers feelings for one another. It even still bore the marking Qrow etched into it.
Q + S
The two rested at the tree, sitting down and nuzzling up to each other. Summer laid her head on Qrow's shoulder, and the two began reminiscing about that day. Soon enough however, the two dozed off into a slumber from the calming sounds of the forest.

Embers - MRAU Kite Branwen pt. 2
Back again with Part 2 of the MRAU Kite origin story (again, with approval and glee from @elleleh , which makes me so happy 😁)
I'll link Part One at the end, and Part Three when I finish it.
***
Even though he had walked through the night, by the time the sun rose, he could still see the inky black column of smoke blotting the horizon. His village was still smoldering.
Kite Branwen knew the feeling well.
Like the night after a binge, his entire body ached, even as his aura worked frantically to heal what could be mended. There were scars he knew he would carry for the remainder of his life, and the physical ones were the lesser. The bleeding from his useless eye had finally stopped, along with all the rest of his wounds, but singed and caked with blood and ash, he looked a mad man. But few traveled the beaches south of Volgenest, and none that were lost. He crossed paths with noone.
His body begged for respite, his mind for the blackness of sleep, but his soul spurred him on.
There was a town- it wasn't far- his men often traded at their port. It was a quick stop for the men, one final jaunt before home, but there had been a ship due there any day. Hardly even a day's walk away, and since he had been on foot since nightfall prior, he entered the town at midday, under the gaze of bewildered eyes.
Stopping to speak to no living soul, he walked with purpose.
"You'd think," one man whispered in hushed tones to another, as what remained of Kite Branwen strode past, "that he was a king of this land, how he's walking through here."
"Maybe a mad king." The man's compatriot nodded, a brow raised.
The young man continued his trek through the town, pausing only once, at the docks, to scan the ships at port. Spotting the ship bearing the colors of Volgenest, he returned to his steady pace.
As his foot hit the dock to which they were moored, he heard the whispers go out among the crew.
"Chief Branwen? What's he doing here?"
"Has something happened?"
"He looks like hell."
Turning up the gangplank, he mounted the steps with ease. But as his foot hit the deck, the whispers ceased. He paused to scan the crew.
The post captain moved to address him, a question on his brow. What remained of Kite Branwen rose his hand to ward it off.
"Bed."
He hardly recognized his own voice. Rough, scratchy, it felt guttural and unearthly, as if he hadn't spoken in years. Swallowing, he spoke no more. Doing more would cause more damage, and the fire, the roar in his belly was already growing as he looked upon the men that had yet to learn that there was no going home.
The post captain nodded.
"As I'm sure you know, Captain Reed died on the last run. Have yet to find his replacement, sir. The main cabin can be yours?"
Nodding, he turned aft, and without a word more, entered the cabin and locked the door.
***
The next two days were spent in a seesaw of the exhaustion-fueled black void of sleep, or replays of the destruction- both real and imagined. It was after one of the latter - a particularly gruesome possibility - that Kite Branwen awoke with a start.
Still in his tattered clothes, he reeked of old smoke, sweat and blood. He wrinkled his nose in disgust. Stripping, he was surprised to find water in a jug waiting for him beside the wash basin. Someone must have entered and prepared it for him.
Slowly he began to clean, taking stock of the multiple injuries now new to his body. He began with the most obvious- the one that had nearly killed him. Gently cleansing the healing wound, he was surprised to find the skin under the old blood was pink. The scar would be small and deceptive in regards to the damage it had wrought. It was still tender to the touch, and he wondered if it would ever be completely whole.
The small cuts and lacerations had become mostly razor thin lines across his skin, and the burns to his hands and forearms were minimal.
Saving his face for last, he hesitantly took in his new visage in the mirror.
Even before cleaning, he knew there had been no saving his eye. If he had been brutally honest, he had known since the moment the wound was inflicted. He surprised himself to find his hands shaking as he began to clear away the detris. The water was replaced multiple times before the wound was fully revealed.
His socket lay empty. There had been nothing left to heal. This hasn't surprised him. However, the cascading scar underneath it did.
Gently, he touched the edges of the wound and shied away. It was tender, unnaturally so, that even the slightest breeze felt like a toothache, and any pressure felt akin to a fire. He was going to need something to protect it, now that the caked blood had been removed.
Taking a moment, he scanned his body in the mirror. There were three times in his life, that Kite Branwen was broken. It took the third one to leave nothing behind to remake. Like a clay pot broken too many times, the pieces were dust, and the wind had taken too many away.
No, the man before him looked like Kite; the correct scars, the right build, the striking hair color. Even the few days worth of scruff, though out of place, was not disjointed. But the eyes; they belonged to someone else. Broken, feral, and with nothing to live for, their copper color had grown dark.
A small breeze slipped through the aft windows, and he noticed the sea stretching for miles. It chilled him. His heart always longed for the sea, but it's wind was bitingly cold on his skin, for the first time. He yearned anew for the fires of destruction and their indiscriminate cleansing power, to warm away the chill.
Rubbing his chilled fingers together, he moved to a nearby sea chest, searching for something to wear. Reeds had been mostly similar in build, but he was lucky to find a simple shirt and pants to fit him. Stopping at the door, he took in a deep breath, preparing to face his men. A brown naval coat sat on a hook near the door frame. Respectable and well-maintained, he shrugged as he put it on. It fit well, but felt… off. It would do to keep the cold off his back for the time being, and that was enough.
Taking another look at himself in the mirror, he allowed a small moment of sorrow, but the embers in his belly grew, and they begged for more than resigned woe. They lusted for revenge, and the man who used to be Kite Branwen agreed.
Lips thin, jaw set, he opened the door to a new world. One he was going to set ablaze one city at a time.
