Teen Challenges
https://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/124072/teen-challenges
“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Franklin Roosevelt
Rachel Glass hosts a show focusing on teen challenges. She begins by reading then resonating with the chapter, The Gift of Youth by Victoria Whitebread from the book, Be the Star You Are! Millennials to Boomers Celebrating Gifts of Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World. Rachel also reads the chapter she wrote for the same book titled, The Gift of Self-Love and provides an update on how she has grown and changed since writing the chapter. Her chapter’s purpose is a call to action for people to individually look inward and be thankful. People across the country are facing real issues like hunger, poverty, and racism, and it’s not as simple as just staying positive and being thankful. We must help and love others. Author of For Teenagers Living with a Parent Who Abuses Alcohol/Drugs, Edith Lynn Hornik-Beer, is interviewed. Edith was inspired to write her book after she was approached by teens after they read her newspaper column, The Young World. The book answers many questions including: What causes alcoholism? What can I as a teenager do to protect myself from abuse? Where can I get help? Should I stay at home? How can anyone expect me to concentrate in school? Why do I fight with my parents even when they are sober? Where can I go for help?
Edith wants everyone to remember: You are not alone. You can do so much with your life. You do NOT have to be a prisoner of your circumstances. Establish a healthy lifestyle. There is help.

She has been invited to talk on local TV talk shows in Michigan, Colorado, New York, and on national TV shows such as Good Morning America, and such radio shows as Health Line, Harvard School Of Public Health. She has lectured at various colleges and institutes including Chautauqua Institute, Touro College, Long Island University, Colorado Mountain College. Her writings are collected by Simmons College Archive of Women Writers. ON APRIL 18, instead of concocting a game plan to possibly defend Giannis Antetokounmpo on the opening day of the NBA playoffs, Garrett Temple was locked in on antithesis passages in his online LSAT prep course.
With the 2019-20 NBA season on hold since March 11 due to the coronavirus, the Brooklyn Nets wing has been putting in the hours studying, listening to law podcasts and talking to professors as part of his weekly preparation for the Law School Admission Test.
While some players have tried to fill the basketball void with video games or training routines, others have taken on new challenges to stay sharp. From mastering a second language to becoming handy around the house to diving into a Lego world, players are finding ways to stay engaged.
And one might even be law school-bound, with sights on a perfect 180 LSAT score.
“I can’t let — what’s-her-name on ‘Legally Blonde’ got a 179 — Elle Woods [beat me],” Temple said. “I really want to do it and get a great score.”

Garrett Temple has been spending his time away from basketball with LSAT prep. “It’s providing structure. I’m really enjoying it,” he said. Courtesy of Garrett Temple
BEFORE THE SUSPENSION, Temple had long been contemplating life after basketball. The 10-year journeyman graduated from LSU in 2009 with an undergraduate business degree and considered getting his MBA. His father, Collis Temple, told him that a law degree would be more beneficial.
Collis is an entrepreneur in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was the first black varsity basketball player at LSU after Temple’s grandfather, Collis Temple Sr., was not allowed to attend graduate school at LSU because of his skin color.
Temple’s interest in pursuing a law degree was further piqued after watching a TED talk by Adam Foss, a former assistant district attorney in Boston and advocate for criminal justice reform. The final push came when Temple met Bryan Stevenson, the nationally acclaimed public interest lawyer and social justice activist depicted in the 2019 film “Just Mercy.”
“I think you can create a lot of change in your own community,” Temple said. “Help change the prison industrial complex and school-to-prison pipeline in my community, the black community.”
Temple has immersed himself in science podcasts and magazines with help from his fiancée, Kára McCullough, a scientist with a concentration in radiochemistry.
She has also often forced Temple to take breaks from hours of studying. The veteran guard just can’t help himself.
“It’s providing structure. I’m really enjoying it,” Temple said.
“I mean, we ain’t got nothing else to do. So I’m studying, man. Just trying to better myself.”
CODY ZELLER KNEW next to nothing about carpentry before the season went on hiatus. But a month and a half in, the Charlotte Hornets center can now build a closet befitting a 7-footer. (It’s a skill that has been quicker to learn than playing the guitar, which others such as Antetokounmpo and Patty Mills have also picked up.)
Zeller’s brother Tyler, a free agent who most recently played with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2019, purchased a home in Indiana, and Cody has been helping with do-it-yourself home improvement projects.
“I took responsibility for [Tyler’s] master closet,” Zeller said. “I had no woodworking ability before. I’ve learned how to use a miter saw, a table saw. We put it together.”
“Everybody and their mother is gonna have a podcast when we are done with this quarantine.”
Georges Niang
Lack of experience? That was nothing a few YouTube tutorials couldn’t solve — almost.
“I will say, full disclosure, I had to [build] it twice,” Zeller said, “because the first time I messed up.”
Zeller cut, sanded and painted all the wood and built a seven-tier shelf rack. But when he went to fasten the frame to the wall, he had forgotten one tiny yet crucial detail.
“I realized I hadn’t accounted for the space between the closet rod and the shelf above it, so there was no room for the hangers to hang on the closet,” Zeller said. “So it was back to the drawing board.
“That was like three days’ worth of work down the drain. Anyway, long story short, it looks great now.”
THIS EXTRA DOWNTIME has given John Collins the chance to master a second language and get more in touch with his family heritage. Collins, whose mother is part Puerto Rican, has been taking Spanish lessons via Rosetta Stone and the Duolingo app.
The Atlanta Hawks big man took Spanish classes in high school in West Palm Beach, Florida, before continuing courses during his two years at Wake Forest.
“I never had a chance to finish — obviously I left school early,” Collins said. “But it’s always been something that I’ve wanted to finish just ’cause I have been around it so much, and I want to learn.”
Monday through Friday, host Mina Kimes brings you an inside look at the most interesting stories at ESPN, as told by the top reporters and insiders on the planet. Listen
Although he could grasp what his grandfather and other relatives were saying during conversations, Collins found writing in Spanish to be difficult. After the first few weeks of quarantine, Collins wasn’t sure how much his Spanish was improving.
“I’m better than where I was,” Collins said. “To get real growth, I got to go over to a Spanish-speaking country.
“Hopefully one day I will get the opportunity.”
USED TO MAINTAINING a strict in-season schedule, Utah Jazz forward Georges Niang found the extra free time jarring.
The team dropped off a stationary bike and weights so he could keep up with daily exercises, but video games have grown boring, Netflix has provided only so many hours of entertainment, and sleeping in has lost its appeal.
So he started the “Drive & Dish” podcast and video series with help from the Jazz.
“Everybody and their mother is gonna have a podcast when we are done with this quarantine,” he said.
After an unsuccessful foray into Instagram Live — “It was horrible content,” Niang said — “Drive & Dish” debuted on March 31 and has delved into quarantine life with Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell, the Olympics postponement with two-time soccer gold medalist Amy Rodriguez and the Michael Jordan Game 6 winner with former Jazz player Bryon Russell.
Niang even has his own theme song and logo.

The podcast’s name is inspired by his team nickname. In the Jazz locker room, Niang is known as “the minivan” because he likens his teammates to Ferraris while thinking of himself as a less luxurious vehicle.
“I need a couple laps around the block before I get warmed up,” Niang said. “Hop in the minivan and drive and dish.”
KENT BAZEMORE HAS been teeing it up at some of the best golf courses in the country. Virtually, that is.
The Sacramento Kings swingman has been regularly retreating to the basement of his Atlanta home, honing his skills on a golf simulator that would rival Tiger Woods’ personal setup. Video cameras and sensors track Bazemore’s every hook, slice, chip and putt.
It is about as in-depth as I can get without being a professional golfer,” said Bazemore, who earlier this month took down former teammate Stephen Curry in a virtual match at Pebble Beach.
2 Related
Now the lefty has a chance to get serious about his golf game. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, Bazemore takes virtual golf lessons with his instructor, Jon Tattersall, the 2014 Georgia PGA Teacher of the Year.
And Bazemore still drives to a real golf course once a week — Georgia is one of a handful of states allowing courses to stay open.
“I am on a quest to become a scratch golfer,” Bazemore said. “My handicap right now is at 8 and I need it to be down to 0.”
To get over the next hump, Bazemore said he plans on working with a sports psychologist.
“There’s a lot of things that go into becoming [a scratch golfer],” Bazemore said. “I’m on the fringe. This is the closest I’ve ever been.”
THOUSANDS HAVE FLOCKED to social media over the past month to listen to DJs such as D-Nice spin sets on Instagram Live.
Now Andre Drummond has joined the wave.
On April 20, the Cleveland Cavaliers center kicked off “Drummond Quarantine Radio,” which features Drummond with DJ Drewski from the center’s Miami home.
Last week, Drummond hosted a “ladies night” set, when viewers could make song requests. And he put on “Talent Show Thursday,” which featured an appearance by actor and comedian Michael Rapaport, among other special guests.

Drummond’s no novice. He goes by the rap name “DRUMMXND” and is planning on releasing his second album, “FYI 2,” soon.
He won’t be the only NBA player releasing new music during quarantine. Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon dropped his Dwyane Wade- and dunk contest loss-inspired diss track “9 out of 10” on Monday.
On Tuesday, Gordon made a guest appearance on the seventh episode of “Drummond Quarantine Radio.” Drummond pointed out that for as long as they’ve known each other, he never knew of Gordon’s desire to put out rap songs.
“I mean, we got a lot of time on our hands right now, ya hear me?” said Gordon, who started making music before this season and is working with Grammy Award winner Austin Owens, also known as Ayo The Producer.
“I get to tap into my creative side,” Gordon added. “Get in touch with emotions and express myself.”
Gordon then gave DRUMMXND his next quarantine endeavor — to deliver some new rap hooks.
“We putting together a project, [with] athletes, with Ayo,” Gordon said. “We need you on the project.
“We need a couple of verses for the project. Please.”
LOCAL GYMS SHUT down after Dallas County issued a shelter-in-place order on March 23, but Myles Turner had to find a way to get in weight training while staying in the guest house of the Texas home he built for his parents.
So the Indiana Pacers center jumped online to find the nearest squat rack — more than 100 miles away in Waco.
“In Texas, that’s nothing,” said Turner, who embarked on the four-hour round trip along Interstate 35. “That’s just an easy drive, right down the street.”
Turner then built the multipurpose squat rack and bench press in under two hours with help from friends. It’s now the centerpiece of a once near-empty garage he’s converted into his personal gym, complete with medicine balls, adjustable dumbbells and a padded floor.
“I gotta improvise,” said Turner, who last week shared his passion for yoga via a live class on the NBA’s Instagram page. “I’ve always kind of been into just putting stuff together.”
And when he didn’t have a screwdriver or wrench in his hand, Turner was still busy building. He assembled one Lego set, and his latest creation — a 2,000-piece Star Wars jigsaw puzzle — was completed in about a week.
“I am about to go to Target right now,” he said, “and get a basketball hoop for outside.”

Mom Hilariously Mocks Celebrities and Their Glamorous, Ridiculous Lives
Kate Casey mimicking Kristen Stewart. (Photo: Instagram)
Everyone has something to say about how celebrities and magazines depict a ridiculously unrealistic way of living, but no one has a more hilarious than Kate Casey, author, comedian, fashion critic and podcast host.
On Instagram, the mother can often be seen mimicking celebrities and magazine spreads in way more realistic settings, like a side-by-side of Kim Kardashian getting her hair and makeup done by her glam squad and Casey getting her hair brushed by her toddler daughter. She frequently captions the images with a witty description and, “same, right?” It’s pretty hard not throw Casey a like with her take on the way celebrities “live,” if you can even call it that. Casey would probably agree that it’s more like floating or dreaming.
My hair team consists of myself and a 3 year old who only brushes the front of my head and enjoys glitter barrettes. So basically the same as @kimkardashian
A post shared by Kate Casey (@katecaseyca) on Mar 21, 2017 at 5:09pm PDT
“My approach is to compare a magazine or celebrity photo to a normal mother,” Casey, who has four children, tells Yahoo Style. Upon seeing a ridiculous image, she begs the question, “how normal is this photo?” But she’s not trying to tear down Hollywood and the glam front it puts up. “I think my posts are a combination of ode and funny criticism. I am also making fun of myself in these pictures. For example, I wish I could wear Kim Kardashian’s plastic boots, but the closest I could come was wrapping my legs with saran wrap.”
I miss Kim.
A post shared by Kate Casey (@katecaseyca) on Dec 8, 2016 at 5:36pm PST
She’s referring to the clear, plastic thigh-high boots Kardashian wore in New York City this past September, and the side-by-side she created with her legs wrapped up like chicken cutlets.
How @kimkardashian travels compared to me. #coachwithkids Same, right? #sameright #loveandknuckles Photo cred ????@jasminemajor

“I started making the collages for my followers years ago. I just want to make people laugh,” she says. And that she does. Anyone in need of a good chuckle should just look at Casey sitting in a bath in a gold dress beside a bunch of Barbie dolls as she takes on one of Mariah Carey’s infamous hot-tub pics or hanging from monkey bars to recreate Beyonce’s Ivy Park ad.
Ah, a luxurious dip in a gold sequin dress. Why let this festive moment pass? I get it, @mariahcarey – I get it.

She was first inspired to compare her life to that of Hollywood’s elite when she saw Kristen Stewart’s 2014 Elle spread. The actress walked the aisles of a grocery store in designer duds, including a pink Chanel suit from the French brand’s Fall 2014 collection. “Who goes to the grocery store in luxury clothes?” Casey recalls of her reaction to the photo. “I strapped my new baby into a Bjorn and dragged my other two kids into the grocery store and had my babysitter take the photo. I have been taking similar photos ever since.”
Grocery stores are my runway. Memories. @ellemagazineus #kristenstewart

And while it looks like some of these photos are dumb luck, she plans them out. “I search for photos and in many cases I am sent suggestions. It feels like a team effort at this point. I am often asked who takes the pictures for me and the answer is anyone standing nearby,” Casey, who now has 10.7k followers on Instagram, says.
Super practical workout outfit @mariahcarey Same, right?

While she’s not trying to get the attention of the celebrity in the image necessarily, sometimes she does. Like when she completely recreated Gwyneth Paltrow’s supermarket spread for Harper’s Bazaar (clearly, she has a bone to pick with celebrities pretending supermarket aisles are catwalks — who can blame her?).
One more… Who doesn't lounge on the conveyer belt in the checkout line, especially in a bathing suit? Same, right? #loveandknuckles #sameright Photo cred ???? @jackieculmer

“The photo editors at Harper’s Bazaar loved my photo parody of Gwyneth Paltrow in the grocery store,” she gushes. “When I saw she commented on the photo, I spit out my drink. It turns out Gwyneth Paltrow has a good sense of humor!” On the side-by-side of both women wearing LBDs in the cereal aisle, Paltrow commented, “This is awesome.” What a good sport.
I always shop for 16 boxes of cereal in evening gown attire too. Same, right? #sameright #loveandknuckles Photo cred ????@jackieculmer

Having the opportunity to walk a mile (or should we say…aisle?) in a celebrity’s shoes, it begs the question: what is wearing a swimsuit to the grocery store really like? “During the Gwyneth Paltrow photo session a man in the checkout line yelled at me for only wearing a bathing suit and a suit jacket,” Casey recalls. “Later that morning I received a note from the manager of the grocery store letting me know how much the staff enjoyed watching me walk down the cereal aisle. I apologized to the other customers, but for the most part they would laugh and then continue shopping for ingredients for dinner that night.”
As Casey would say, same, right?

LAST UPDATED: 02/12/2020 (GRAMMAR REVISED, ADDED HEADSPACE and SMOKERAFT by ELLE)
UPDATED: 02/03/2020 (ALL PASSAGES UPDATED by ROSWEL)
UPDATED: 07/18/18 (Added ROSWEL by LUKAS)
Active:eden, elle, tom, roswel, luka, magnus, johnny, jay, Smokeraft
EDEN: they/them, age 10, angel, [the innocent]. ACTIVE
A child who calls themselves an angel, they are: high spirited, positive, mindful to others, and are best friends with another great kid named Pit[dormant]. Eden is very supportive and will do what he can to make any situation a positive one by being silly or otherwise cheerful. When they front they sound very awake/bright in the vocals with a small gasp before starting a sentence, they also giggle more. Eden has progressed towards maturity, and calls themselves 10 years old now. They miss Pit quite a bit, and they get sad about this from time to time. Eden fronts fairly regularly now, and is out more when others are not feeling well emotionally.
Elle/Elliot: they/she/him, age 20, [the mother]. ACTIVE
She/He is GenderFluid, a heartwarming introvert who can get overwhelmed/confused quite easily, and they will do their best to make sure everyone is content just as a caretaker would. They are long term partners with Eve[dormant], Elle/Elliot will get overwhelmed very easily but is such a sweetheart and is too pure for this world. They have lots of sympathy towards others, they’re a huge supporter, and is a worry wart. When he/she fronts they sound very soft in the voice and say “honey” quite often. The vocals they give out are soothing/calm. Their voice is never high or low, it’s just the Elle tone. Elle is always there for their friends, and cares deeply for others. They front more often when we are faced with friends in trouble, especially if someone is sick, or the vessel is not feeling well.
Eve: he/him, age 30, ghost, [the father]. DORMANT
This man is very respectable as well as a parent figure to most of the children. He is known to be: Relaxing, supportive, understanding, tolerant to others, a very genuine person, and easy to get along with. He has a serious type personality that is very soothing to be around, as well as someone who can be quite stern when needed to be. When he fronts he makes the voice as low as possible to express the man in him, has a similar tone as Tom and can be difficult to tell the two apart. The best way to find out who it is: mention anything clean and see if the reaction is total support or just unsatisfied responses that may sound like acceptance or confusion. He loves Elle very deeply, but he shows his love quietly. He is bashful about showing his emotions.
Flicker: they/them, age 15, fae, [manic pixie]. DORMANT
They are full of life and sparkles with similar personality as Lukas, this bundle of fluff is over the top with kindness as well as child like hyper moments despite being an adult.
Imagine a glitter bomb hurricane, that will describe this lovely creature. When they front the voice is all over the place and sounds like Lukas, Johnny, and Eden all mixed in one. They love clowns, neons, and raves, and they are constantly high energy. They are also VERY mischievous towards those around them.
Ghost: she/her, age 20, ghost, [the maiden]. DORMANT
She is very generous with her words and personality, she will always be more than happy to talk to anyone though she can be a little shy with interaction: she still manages to make a splendid impression with communication. Ghost is simply divine to talk too, she’s the best to talk too for casual discussions and such. When they front they sound like a mix of Eve and elle combined in the tone. Professional and light in tone- Ghost may be shy, but she is very straightforward and honest.
Jamie: he/him, age 5, human, [the toddler]. DORMANT
This little guy is a mimic machine, he will copy anything new he sees/reads/hears so be careful what you do/say around this little one, he is a bundle of joy with a bit of sass, and just a hint of spunk in his attitude. He is what a curious child would be if there was no one to tell him what to do. He is related to Sam and will call almost anyone with a hobby “a nerd”.
When they front it sounds like a wide awake kid, they do not sound adult whatsoever.
They cling mostly with Eve[dormant], their main caretaker.
Jammy: he/him, age 7, sheep, [the traumatized innocent]. DORMANT
A child who likes to sleep and is very open about what they like. They are the sweetest bundle of joy who will share a lot of their hobbies and interest quite often. When they front it sounds like a sleepy mumbling murrs that are hard to tell what they’re saying. Jammy is easily triggered, and needs to be focused on in further therapy, as they hold a lot of trauma from early childhood.
Jay: he/him, age 15, human?, [the sad]. ACTIVE
This young man is quite sensitive and is prone to sadness. He has a very loving and gentle personality, easy to get along once he feels comfortable. Currently dating Sam[dormant], he’s very clingy to those he cherishes the most. He sounds sad even when he’s happy so it may be confusing to some, he is an introvert,he is calm and seeks comfort. When he fronts he makes the voice sound shaky, slow, calm soothing tone, and really likes to talk about mothman including other cryptid discussions. They front occasionally, most often when we are sad. He deals well with depression, as he has the worst symptoms out of all of us.
Johnny: he/him, age 20, corpse, [the avenger]. ACTIVE
He is someone that you can rely on with down to earth situations. He likes to joke around, he is mischevous, he is annoying(to me-roswel). If he has a problem with anyone then he will proudly address it or talk very little to the person to at least be polite to some degree if the person is close to someone else in the system, although being polite means very little to him. He is loud, proud, funny, passionate, and angry. He doesn’t deal well with sadness and directs it into anger. He feels VERY vindictive of the traumas we have suffered, and he has stabbed one of our abusers before.
When he fronts he makes the voice sound as high pitch as possible and likes to repeat “hey hey hey hey” multiple times if he wants your attention, kind of sounds like a sassy valley kid only doesn’t say “like” in every half paragraph. He will also say Amigo 50x.
He fronts quite often, especially when we are angry.
Luka: he/him, age 20, human, [the host]. ACTIVE
He’s been in the system longer than anyone else. He’s mostly pretty calm, but prone to nostalgia. He spends practically all his time with Smokeraft. [He’s been absent in the system for a while now. (note circa 2017- Lukas is back as of august 2018.] He loves games and spending time with his mom, who he holds VERY dear. Luka has been feeling much more comfortable fronting and with his friends. He is still a bit emotionally unstable, but he has developed a lot of coping mechanisms to help him now. Lukas has been more outgoing, outspoken, and happy as of late.
Smokeraft: it/he, ageless, ANUBIS, [the Mirror] ACTIVE
(I do not know why Smokeraft didn’t have an addition- he has been in this system for 12 years now.-Elle) Smokeraft does not front. He has fronted 3 times in our life- once when Lukas was in court, once to tell an abuser to leave Lukas alone, and once when someone pointed a gun to our chest. Smokeraft is a protector who serves only Lukas, and he is also a manager. For these reasons, the only two people he speaks to are Lukas and Tom (business only with Tom). He can only be seen in headspace locked in his office. He has the head of a black jackal and the body of a tall, muscular-ish man. He wears only black button-ups, slacks, and a bloody apron. He will not make eye contact with anyone. The only times he can be seen out of his office is in the presence of Lukas, who sees him as his Dad above all else. Smokeraft will not speak in the presence of others while around Lukas. Despite knowing Smokeraft for 8 years now, I(elle) only know about him as much as Lukas tells me. Smokeraft is quite warm to them, and he often reads to Lukas, and tucks him into bed.
Magnus: it/its, age ?, ghost, [the instinctive]. ACTIVE
[ This kid is very good at whispering when he needs too, he speaks of simple words consisting of “yes” and “no”s. ] Magnus has developed more than anyone else through the years. He has learned to speak, he has made friends, and he is learning social cues. He’s a bit of a weirdo to most, but he’s a great kid. He loves anatomy and podcasts. He spends most of his time with Rutta[dormant], who became his best friend. Magnus’s intersts includes animal anatomy (particularly bovine), medicine in general, dolls, and earth sciences.
Pit: they/them, age 10, monster [the child]. DORMANT
They are a pure bundle of joy with a bit of a speech impediment, though they do love to communicate with others, they find it difficult to annunciate most of the time and consists of saying things related to bubbles or that rhyme with bubbles. They are sensitive about not being understood and do try their hardest to speak correctly even if it’s too much sometimes. Patience is a must along with kindness and support. This child is a blessing to have around and will always try their hardest to be able to say words correctly just to have a conversation with you. They are best friends with Eden and both of them are usually never separated except for fronting sometimes.
Rutta: they/them, age 20, human, [the traumatized]
This person is the anxious type who gets startled easily from things that are unexpected, They’re a very sweet nonbinary fellow with little to say. Rutta is an introvert that enjoys podcasts, fashion, and spending time with his best friend Magnus. Rutta carries a good bit of our sexual trauma from ages 12-14, causing them to have many specific triggers.
Sam: he/him, age 25, human, [the lover]. DORMANT
He is a genuine child who is occasionally an adult, he mostly fronts with Jay who he is currently dating. Sam is an introvert who assumes people don’t like him despite it usually being the opposite. Sam does not have much experience fronting, and is mostly focused internally at keeping everyone emotionally balanced. He is very close and friendly with everyone in our system, and is one of few that everyone enjoys, making him great at his job of maintaining ourselves internally.
Todd: he/him, age 15, human, [the perfectionist] DORMANT
He is a fabulous stunning man who is well known to be a cheerful dude, he is always on top of looking his best and may surprise you from time to time. Todd is a perfectionist in his work, which often involves maintaining our vessel and living space. He is also a perfectionist when it comes to socialization- he feels the need to have a point in talking to everyone (a definitive list of topics to discuss to avoid pauses, awkwardness, or loss of interest), making him a bit withdrawn. He has few friends in or outside of our system. He is a big fan of anime and k-dramas (mostly Boys over Flowers), and dresses more boldly than most anyone else. He has a love for completing everything he does, making him quite dedicated to our school work. Todd shows extreme dedication yet restraint with his few friends.
Tom: he/they/it, age 25, demon, [the manager]. ACTIVE
[This young gentleman is a huge germaphobe.] Tom has progressed from externally showing his germaphobic tendencies. He is not a fan of humans unless they are decent to talk too. He has the same speech pattern as Eve[dormant. Although he is more closed minded to his feelings towards strangers, to close friends he has simplicity- he is a simple person who does simple things. He likes to keep things neat and organized to keep his mind clear, he can get angry rather quickly if caught at the wrong time or having to be pressured into things he does not want to do. He still feels awkward fronting, as he has only done so for the past 3 years or so, compared to the 7 years he spent never fronting. His speech pattern is very simple, he also chooses his friends very carefully. Once you get to know him he’s a wonderful person to talk too, there is much to learn from him as well as learn about him. Although he doesn’t share this with most, Tom thinks carefully about how his actions affect others. He is morose and shameful of his poorly chosen behaviors, and often chooses to withdraw from people he likes. Tom has had bad experiences with love, being that the only 2 people he chose to pursue romantically abandoned/hurt him. For this and more reasons, Tom keeps people at a distance.
Vallis: he/him, age 15, human, [the substitute]. DORMANT
He used to go by Axton, it is now Vallis. This kid is a very outgoing child who expresses himself with noodle puns, has quite the amount of energy, and tends to bounce from topic to topic. He is very sweet to others, he can be a bit of a handful if you’re not used to hyper personalities. Vallis has calm moments though usually when he’s calm it’s rare from either anger, stress, or he’s happy without being hyper. It’s obvious when he’s happy in the calmest way due to the skill of being able to stay on topic with positive attitude. He gets lost a lot in headspace which causes no one to know where he is and what he is doing which causes him to almost never appear. He needs a leash tied to a poll in order to keep track of him honestly. He is quite fond of Magnus, who interests him due to his instinctive traits. Although Vallis does not have any friends, he is very friendly, debatably too friendly with his headmates.
Wil: they/them, age 25, human, [the creature of habit]. DORMANT
they has a very stern way of handling situations as well as who decides to talk too, they usually don’t hesitate with words. They stay on their guard and refuses to take someone else’s responsibility if that person has created it themselves. They consider themselves as mean/rude though to someone he slightly respects may be a little different. They are not afraid to speak their mind as they will be completely honest with how they feel towards an individual.
They front mostly for School Lunches.
Roswel: they/them, age 20, humanoid, [the knight]. ACTIVE
They are a very relaxed individual who likes helping others. They have little care for personal indulgences, and prefer to spend time helping others. They are fairly new (as on Dec 2018- the newest in the system) They don’t like to tell other people they exist because of their inherent distrust of others. They are highly protective and illusive. Although they’re out often, other people generally don’t know about them. Their favorite color is gray. They love knights and medieval tales. They love TAZ Balance.
THE HEADSPACE: (ACTIVE)
Our system has a complicated history with our headspace, as we have, for a short period of time, integrated. For a while, it had vanished, and fronting was similar to blipping in and out of consciousness. As of November, our headspace is back in order. Although most of our system is currently dormant, their doors still remain, albeit locked. Our headspace appears the same way it always has- as a 4 story apartment/dorm building. We have a living room attached to our fronting room, and the living room is attached to the circular hallway surrounding the courtyard. Off the hallway, there are doors, and on the opposite side of the hallway is a set of stairs leading to the next floor. All the floors share a similar pattern. We have a basement, only accessible to Smokeraft, Tom, and Lukas. We have an office where Tom and Smokeraft conduct their business; the office is on the second floor. On the top floor is the attic, which is full of boxes of photographs containing memories. Despite having a room, Magnus often sleeps in the attic because of its messiness and access to the vents, which he uses to spy on his headmates while they are unaware. Between fronting, we retreat to our headspace to spend time with each other and time to ourselves. Time is distorted, and our memories surface all at once the next time we front. We rarely speak to others about the goings on of our headspace anymore, since more often than not, no one is interested. We cannot summon things to headspace that are not already there, and we may gain objects as our brain determines we need them.I will follow this passage by what each individual’s rooms looks like.
Lukas: Luka’s room is very remnescient of our childhood room (trailer). It has a wooden twin bed in one corner with green ivy bedding, a huge container of stuffed animals, and a small box tv on the opposite wall. He has a small closet with his clothes and pictures of his mom in there. Lukas is rarely in his room.
Eden: Eden shares a room with Pit[dormant]. The room is very childish, full of toys, and is centered with a large bunk bed, housing the sleeping[dormant] Pit on the top bunk. Eden spends most his time at his tea table, playing pretend with his large stuffed bunny.
Elle: Elle has a large yet cozy room. She has a huge king bed covered with several layers of thick blankets, topped with a huge, heavy brown and green blanket. The room is full of incomplete paintings that she and Eve started, stacked against the walls. Tapestries of horses and dogs hang on all walls, making the large room feel more full. Her bedframe has huge wooden posts, with hanging veils covering the sides. Her bed is most often full of others coming to her for emotional aid. Eve sleeps on the left side while dormant. Elle’s room smells like cinnamon cake.
Johnny/Jay: Johnny and Jay share a room, as Jay does not like living alone. Johnny’s side of the room is decrepit, and only has two pieces of furniture on it. He has an upturned milk crate as a night stand, which houses a partially broken alarm clock-radio, and a rusted metal bed frame with a thin blue-stripe mattress with a wool blanket atop it, with a single pillow. Jay’s side of the room is more full. He hangs several posters on the wall (x-files, cryptids, sloths, lizards, and moths), has an elaborate bedframe that includes some shelves and an attached desk, and he has a pet lizard (cannot be removed from terrarium). Jay’s side is humid, comfortable, and dark. He does not like guests in his room, aside from johnny, who often sleeps with him. Due to jay, the room smells like pine needles.
Roswel: Roswel’s room is quite simple.. They have a mattress on the floor, a vase with a single white rose in it, hanging dried flowers from the exposed rafters, and a suit of armor in the corner. Roswel does not deny guests to their room, and their room smells like honeysuckle.
Tom: Tom does not welcome guests into his room, mostly due to his germaphobic nature. He has a line on the floor on the edge of his room, and a stick which he pushes people away with if they step over his comfort line. His room is mostly an office space, with a single bed along one wall. He has a door leading to a second room (no one will tell me what is on the other side) on the back wall. He has a poster of a bunny above his bed.
Magnus: Magnus’s room smells like cleaning products, is white floor to ceiling, and is mostly barren. He has a cot that he rarely sleeps on, and 3 books (Bovine anatomy, doll restoration, and human anatomy), and an exposed steel sink and toilet. He spends more time in the attic or vents than his room. He comes across a bit differently than the rest of us due to his inherent disinterest in the attention of others.

There are a lot of ways to define wellness. Renowned yoga teacher Elena Brower defines it as “your ability to respond rather than to react;” Dr. Mark Hyman says it’s the integrated care of every aspect of ourselves: Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational. Wellness activist Kerri Kelly believes that “wellness is the culture of how we take care of ourselves and one another.”
However you define it, one thing is certain: Around the world, people are becoming increasingly interested in what it means to be well. And while we wholeheartedly disagree with the idea that wellness necessitates consumerism—you do not need expensive cushions, treatments, or infused juices to be well—a not-so-deep dive into social media reveals that superfood smoothie bowls, cupping marks, and guided meditations are definitely having a moment. Wellness, that is, is trending. And it’s not just in the US: Around the world, teachers, practitioners, and consumers are redefining mindful living through buying choices they make every day.
In celebration of Passport—your ticket to an unlimited number of the 50+ Wanderlust events around the world—we’re taking a deeper-than-social-media dive into worldwide wellness trends looking toward 2019. Journey with us as we stretch our scope and explore both the similarities and differences in our global community.
This week: What’s trending in wellness throughout Western Europe.
Bringing Women Together
Creating safe and sacred spaces for women to come together, support, and empower one another is undoubtedly less of a trend and more of necessity. Thankfully, it’s a necessity the world at large is realizing, responding to, and bring to reality across the globe.
Red Tents are just one display of how women from all ages and walks of life are being brought under one roof to authentically be, together, in various forms. As explained on Red Tent Temple Movement, these gatherings offer an “opportunity to tell our stories, share our wisdom, cry and laugh and rest inside a place that we collectively create to honor our place in society.” The idea of Red Tents was introduced to many through a novel written in the 90s by Anita Diamant. It has since blossomed into an incredible community worldwide. Noemie Fontelle, a devoted yogi, and UK-transplant by way of Poland, told us that this sisterhood community gives women a space to gather, share, and create. Red Tents are popping up all throughout the UK, as well as much of Western Europe—you can find one nearest you here.
Free-From Foods
In Western Europe, there’s been a broadening focus on making healthier choices at meal time. In particular, ‘free-from’ foods are at the top of the list in terms of what consumers are looking to spend their hard-earned dollars on most. What are they free from? The trending items are free from dairy/lactose, allergens, gluten, and meat, according to EuroMonitor International’s Monthly Health Series. While these free-from products initially derived out of a need to accommodate food intolerances in consumers’ diets, they’ve since become more popular as a means to make more healthy, mindful dietary choices.
An increase in desire for more natural, unprocessed foods has led to the rise in popularity of “free from” products and packaged meals. When heading to the market, it turns out that Western Europeans are looking for, and most attracted to, labels that include a list of ingredients that they recognize—ingredients that they’d find in their own cupboards. That is to say, simplified products with wholesome ingredients that are comparable with what we’d create ourselves at home are what’s in demand now.

Living Sober
With the rise of drink-free months, like Dry July (and January, too!), and Ocsober, sober living seems to be having a moment, but in the UK it’s becoming more and more apparent that you don’t have to wait for a specific month to make sobriety a priority. With the appearance of alcohol-free bars, sober living is becoming a more accessible, and sustainable choice.
In 2017, UK native (and Wanderlust presenter!) Ruby Warrington launched a mindful drinking movement with Club Soda, which has created an exhaustive guide that highlights bars and pubs throughout the UK with alcohol-free or low-alcohol offerings. According to The Guardian, “young adults in the UK are more likely to be teetotallers than their older counterparts.” The article continued to state that, “more than a quarter of 16- to 24-year-olds do not drink.”
The new sober social scene offers up a pub-like atmosphere—lively, fun, and bursting with good vibes—with a health-conscious, sober-friendly menu of mocktails proving that you don’t have to indulge in alcohol to have a good time. Redemption may be one of the most buzzed about locales to catch an alcohol-free buzz, serving up non-alcoholic beer, sparkling wine, and shots (turmeric and ginger, anyone?) but it’s certainly not the only option available.
Embracing Silence
Regardless of what hemisphere of the globe you’re in, you’ve likely heard this age old adage, “Silence is golden.” Across Western Europe a wellness trend is emerging that’s taking that saying and putting it into action in expected spaces like spas, and salons, and some unexpected, like restaurants, and even airports.
Practicing silence often goes hand in hand with thoughts of mindfulness practices like meditation, forest bathing, yoga, and the like—silent dining is likely not one of the first things that comes to mind.
When you think about it, though, without the distraction of overpowering background music, or constant conversation, one might have the opportunity to really experience a meal in every facet. The flavors, the textures, the smells, the colors, even. A 2017 Global Wellness Summit highlighted eating in silence, noting that in some Western European spas’ programs in Austria and Germany the mindfulness practice is “an absolute pillar.”
The Ambiance of Wellness
Certain images come to mind when thinking of zen spaces, right? Candles, maybe, soft lighting, cozy, tactile textures, warm color tones… We’re feeling relaxed just imaging these soothing elements. In Western Europe, it appears that ambiances that support and promote wellness are trending, and there’s a heavy focus on lighting and its subsequent effects.
Trend Watching put the spotlight (pun intended) on this trend. Dubbed “ambient wellness,” both Starbucks and Qatar Airways have made changes keeping the effect that lighting has on people’s moods and overall wellbeing top of mind.
In the Netherlands, Trend Watching reported that various Starbucks brought in Phillips EnergyUP lamps to positively enhance the overall vibe of the cafes. “The lamps are designed to have a mood-lifting, revitalizing effect after around 20 minutes of use; Philips say they produce this effect by mimicking natural daylight.”
Spas are putting an updated, and more experiential focus on lighting, too. By using lighting in treatments, combined with other mood-affecting elements, spas are able to offer in-depth sensory experiences. According to Global Wellness Summit’s exploration of wellness trends, Toscana Therme Spas in Germany and Austria offer a next-level bath experience that involves floating “in warm salt water, gently manipulated by therapists, with over-water light shows and underwater music turning the pool into a mind-melting concert hall.”
Mad For Mud
Loved playing, and lying, in mud as a child? You may have been onto something there. Western Europeans are very much in favor of a muddy day of fun, or a more refined day of rejuvenation and relaxation.
For fun? A walk along the mud flats of the Wadden Sea during low tide offers up a free, nature-surrounded, mud bath to indulge in. Its status as a UNESCO site keeps it protected for both locals and visitors alike to enjoy it for years to come.
For rejuvenation and relaxation? Spas around the region use mud from thermal baths/spring in their treatments, but Italy could arguably be the destination for a mud bath. This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill mud, either, fango, or mud, from Italy is rich in minerals and has a host of wellness benefits, too. According to ELLE, the “sulfur and iodine-rich water and clay” have “skin smoothing and sore-muscle relieving properties”
From women’s gatherings to tuning in to silence, and every (muddy) moment in between, Western Europe seems to explore wellness through sensory experiences and building community. Can’t make it to Western Europe? Get creative, and inventive. Find ways to bring trends from around the world that inspire you to where you are. Introduce them to your community. Experiment, and explore new wellness initiatives.
Wellness is a state of being and a way of living. For some, a wellness practice could be laying in a hammock, listening to a podcast, watching the clouds roll by; for others it’s bounding up a 14,000-foot summit, blood pumping, adrenaline screaming. There’s no wrong path to take on the journey to mind-body wellness, and there are countless interesting and inspiring trends within the wellness world to get you there.
We hope this series will bring new practices, new experiences, and new thoughts around wellness, and how to find the perfect recipe of what works for you—wherever you are in your wellness journey, and wherever you are in the world.

What Will 2018 Mean For Your Life? (And a Giveaway)
Every New Year, the cynics are quick to tell you how arbitrary all the motivational messages, resolutions, and new beginnings are. It’s just another day, they grumble. And, sure, they have a point.
You could start that new diet, join that new CrossFit box that just opened down the street, and finally pursue the dream job you’ve always wanted on March 7th, February 15th, or August 3rd. It doesn’t have to be January 1st. Any day will do. The New Year is somewhat arbitrary.
But we’re social animals who thrive in the presence of others. We feed off the energy around us to fuel our own initiative. On some level we’re always looking to what the group is doing for motivation, if not direction. The New Year presents a unique opportunity that way for all of us. Why would we not take advantage of the tailwind?
Taking that first step toward substantive change isn’t always easy. Taking the next steps each day can get lonely. The mood changes, however, when those around you are buzzing with the same intention. This time of year, whatever space you’re in, it’s often full of humans doing, planning, and discussing big changes. Some of it is false bravado of course. Many will fail. Many will never even begin. But the energy is there, it feels real, and it’s infectious. Wasting the global and local momentum would be a big mistake.
New Year’s cynic or no, there’s no better day than today. There isn’t even any other day than today. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow hasn’t materialized. This moment is all that exists. It’s your only option. And—zip—there it went. Moments go fast. Better grab the next.
Yesterday’s post was a fantastic start. Erin’s WHY x5 is an essential tool for digging into your root desires and motivations for change. If you haven’t already, read it and go download the WHY x5 PDF. Fill it out and then come on back. I’ll wait.
Once you’ve figured out what you want to do, change, or become—and you have something (or somethings) very specific written down—it’s time to gather or shore up any knowledge and know-how you might be lacking. It’s important to know the nuts and bolts of Primal living, eating, and training, as you’ll presumably be utilizing them to enact the changes you desire.
Primal Resources Ready and Waiting
Many of you know these topics inside and out. Others do not. The former group can take the opportunity to discover what they’re missing, what they’ve forgotten, what they never knew. The latter group will be in uncharted territory. Here’s how to navigate:
1. Primal Blueprint Challenge page – On this page you’ll be introduced to the basics of the Primal Blueprint and can follow numerous links to learn more (including a link to join the 21-Day Challenge community on Vimify).
2. The Books – I’d especially recommend The New Primal Blueprint book if you haven’t picked it up already. With loads of updated information, graphics and details, it’s a comprehensive, go-to source for Primal living.
3. What to cook? – Check out the Primal Blueprint Recipes on MDA and our cookbooks as well as the suggestions in the 21-Day Total Body Transformation book.
4. The Newsletter – Sign up on this page to get several free ebooks, a 7-day course on the fundamentals of lifelong health, and more.
While we won’t be doing a formal 21-Day Challenge on MDA until late spring, we’ve got plenty of good in store.
As for the MDA blog, this month we’ll be focusing on practical, actionable information you can use to fuel your healthy 2018 intentions, and we’ll have giveaways throughout all of January to celebrate. Check back each day so you don’t miss your chance to take part!
Steep Yourself In Community
We’re social beings, remember? Books and blog posts and research can only get you so far. We also need the community, a living breathing thing that reacts and responds to you.
Sometimes you want to hear health and fitness experts have conversations about the types of topics that could change lives—like yours. Check out the Primal Blueprint Podcast hosted by Elle Russ (and sometimes Brad Kearns and myself), and the Primal Endurance Podcast hosted by Brad Kearns. Both are excellent.
There’s a great MDA Facebook group, extremely active and full of motivated posters, Primal Health coaches, and other enthusiasts. Go join so you can take part in the conversation (and have questions answered).
There’s also a Keto Reset Facebook group that you should join if you’re thinking about going keto. It gives you access to thousands of enthusiasts and experts who love talking about everything related to keto.
For either FB group, lurking is fine. You don’t have to participate, though you’ll probably derive more pleasure and success if you do.
The MDA forums are archived and read-only as of last month, but those archives contain valuable information and fascinating conversations between members on thousands of topics. It’s hard to summarize. Just go look.
You’ve got the tools, the knowledge, the goal in mind. Next comes the hard-easy part: action.
You stand at the base of a tall mountain, gazing up at your New Year’s goal glittering at the peak. There’s a path up, and it looks perilous but possible. Daunting but doable. You can do it. Will you? Take that first step and find out.
And Now A Giveaway For Your Thoughts…
Now I’m going to ask you to fill in the next part. What do you need to make your intention happen—and what can we do on Mark’s Daily Apple to help you? What resources, topics, or ideas will give you a leg up? I’m looking for a whole swarm of possibilities, folks, so don’t be shy.
Let me know what your 2018 intentions are and how the bees and I can help you find success this year. No matter what your goal or your situation, the New Year can be the start of something big for your life.
I’ll choose 15 random commenters from the comment board below to receive a bottle of Primal Kitchen® Ranch Dressing—well, because the more, the merrier. Comment before midnight tonight (1/3/18 PST) to be eligible.
Thanks, everybody. Let’s make 2018 the best yet!

'Winter Love Island' has been confirmed and we're SO excited
Missing Chris and Kem? What about Cam and Jamie? Maybe even Jonny a little bit? Ok, ok, we took it too far – but the point is, we all have a Love Island-shaped hole in our hearts. The good news is, the makers of the hit dating show have answered our prayers by confirming ‘Winter Love Island‘ will be coming next February.
Survival Of The Fittest will be based in the South African savanna and will see a group of young single men and women take part in physical and mental challenges against each other. So, kinda Love Islandy, but with an interesting spin.
What heats it up a little is the opportunities the contestants will have to go on dates with their rival team-mates, designed to test loyalties and group strength. Much like our fave summer-long ITV2 show, the winners will score a cash prize at the end, and viewers have the power to decide who stays and goes along the way.
Laura Whitmore will host the show and comedian Brennan Reece will provide the voiceover.
We. can’t. wait.
