joel saved ellie but he also took away her choice and continually lied to her for years to come. but joel saved ellie and would do it “all over again” and was able to tell her that during their last conversation with each other. he loves her, but he’s also selfish in that love and you could argue whether he was right or wrong a million different ways and you would be correct - that’s part of the point. people are forgetting that regardless of the right choice, there’s still consequences.

if joel had left ellie to the fireflies, ellie would’ve fulfilled what she thought her purpose was and a possible cure would’ve been made, leaving the world in a place where it could finally begin to heal from cordyceps. and perhaps joel would be able to find peace with his brother. but for that to happen, joel would be without ellie and he would have lost a daughter for the second time and, for him, that was a sacrifice that was too great.

with where we’re currently at, joel’s actions will lead to his eventual estrangement from ellie. he took that choice from her and lied to her again and again until she finally found out the truth on her own and refused contact with him until the very end. but it also allowed for years where he was able to be with her, teach her the guitar and how to swim and show her wonderful things and just be a dad again. he didn’t deserve his eventual death, but it happened with the same reason as to how he still has ellie now: love and the fear of losing it. joel made the choice to swap a cure for years as ellie’s father, and no one can say it was the right or wrong choice, but each option he was presented with had bittersweet outcomes.

and that’s part of the beauty of the last of us. it’s not often where characters are presented with decisions that are obviously the right one, much like real life. and sometimes we won’t know our consequences until years to come. but you make the most of what you have in the time you have it, and that’s exactly what joel did.

start/finish 28.10.24 - 05.11.24, 226 pages horror, lovecraftian, mystery final score: 3/6, didnt really pull through, felt unedited

start/finish 06.11.24 - 13.11.24, 188 pages dystopia, feminism, science fiction final score: 5/6, if i was still in academia this is a book id love to read more about, as it's really saying "things" at times. recommend

the other valley, scott alexander howard (2024)

start/finish 13.11.24 - 05.12.24 , 290 pages time travel, science fiction, magical realism final score: 6/6, i was so looking forward to this one, and it did not disappoint. beginning of the second part was a bit slow, but in the end that didnt matter!! highly recommend.

finishing off the year and going into the next is the familiar by leigh barduco. enjoying it so far, but it's a bit more romance than what i normally enjoy/would choose

now, that was long lol. certainly my best reading year so far, after taking a thorough overhaul with my reading process last year. it's been good! one instant favorite, some stellar, many good, and a few duds. if you have any recommendations id love to hear! onto 2025, some books im planning to read are: the marriage portait (maggie o'farrell), queen of the damned (anne rice) the master and mararita (mikahail bulgakov) rest of the southern reach/area x books (jeff vandermeer) and many more!!

cassidy honestly didnt start off vengeful; they were just.. themself.

but you can only really cry so many tears, especially after more and more and more kids show up and share their stories, the small bits they remember.

it may take years, many years, but for ghosts thats nothing. cassidy doesnt grow spiteful, not really. just…. mad. these are their friends. their friends, who miss their families. miss their lives before this.

they didnt deserve this. none of them did.

cassidy and charlie help them warm up to their afterlife. to their new bodies. cassidy cant do much to help them with controlling their bodies (theirs doesnt move well. or much at all.) so charlie helps them. cassidy lets them talk, hears their distress over everything that happened.

cassidy doesnt really miss anyone. it didnt have friends, really. acquaintances at best. and its family didnt like it. or didnt care for it. michael hated it. elizabeth was too preoccupied with their father - with wanting his attention - to notice it. and its father…..

it observes mike, after their father- after williams death. it observed him for quite a while.

it learns why it never saw liz.

it learns more about remnant, and fire, and how the two work.

it does not move on with the others. susie waits for it. charlie does as well.

it does not answer the call to the pizzeria. it tries to warn charlie ahead of time when it finds out. she goes anyways. she trusts henry. hes her dad. of course she trusts him.

when it found out what henry did to charlie, it was frustrated that it couldnt do more.

did william really just get to leave? just like that?

……no. its not letting that happen.

and, god, does it have the strength to dig its claws in keep him here. for as long as it fucking has to.

it brushes off susie and charlies concerns. they stay by its side anyways. their friend needs them, and getting back at william is, admittedly, cathartic. but god, cassidy is wearing itself out.

fWhip huddled up near the wall, eyes black and blue, a small cut on his upper lip, head throbbing in pain, and a sob choked its way out of his throat. He flinched as something touched his face, expecting another blow, but instead his chin was gently cradled as soft thumbs wiped away his tears. 

He opened his eyes to see a familiar freckled face littered with bruises, her usually neat orange hair messy, her eyes watering, and he threw his arms around her for comfort.

She gave him a shaky smile. "It's ok, they're done. It's fine. We can do this, we're strong." she reassured him.

"Gem, I'm scared, they were really angry this time," his voice was muffled by her clothes.

Gem hugged him closer, sniffling. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry I couldn't protect you this time…" 

She murmured a simple spell under her breath, which caused some of his bruises to lighten slightly, as they started healing.

fWhip had heard crying from her bedroom later that night.

Henry paused where he was draping a blanket over Michael, hand coming to rest on the boy's shoulder from where he stood behind the couch. "Michael," he started, voice soft - even if the boy looked different now, it was still Mike. Still the same little kid he took in and cared for all those countless times that Will couldn't be bothered to. He still needed to take care of him now, especially after what had been done to him in that facility. Henry never should've let him take the job. "Of course I did. You're my boy, you know that. Taking care of you is what I do. What I need to do."

He would admit, he had been... Startled, to say the least, when Michael had arrived on his doorstep a few nights ago. The darkness and Henry's flickering porch light hadn't exactly done the poor boy's haunted, decayed features any favors, but once the man himself had gotten over his shock and registered just who exactly it was - which, granted, took him a while, and a cautious reminder from Michael - he'd ushered the boy inside without a second thought.

His feelings on the matter were rather conflicted, but not about the boy himself. Never about the boy himself. He cared for Michael like his own - nothing, especially not something like this, something this horrific that had been entirely out of his control and had hurt him this badly, could ever change that. This conflict regarded William and his creations.

He had never known about the Funtimes, not until Michael told him everything. He'd known of them, sure, he'd heard of the rental service his former business partner had started, but he hadn't been aware of the truth about what the man had been working on down there. What those machines were capable of. The news Michael had finally uncovered about Elizabeth's disappearance, the dead maintenance techs, the Scooper and that tangle of wires stealing his skin, walking his lifeless body around like some kind of meat puppet - it was horrible. He couldn't believe he had let that happen to Michael. The poor boy didn't deserve that. Any of that.

"You've just been through Hell, kid. Your whole life has been you going through Hell - it doesn't seem to know when to stop. If there's anything I can do to make it better, I will. You're my responsibility, and I actually tend to take care of those, as opposed to some people," he said, a healthy amount of spite in his voice. Not directed at Michael, of course. Directed at the elder of the Afton men.

This was about the point in the conversation where he would usually reach down and ruffle the boy's hair in an attempt to comfort him, but, well - that. Wasn't exactly going to work in this situation. Considering the fact that he didn't have much left. This was going to take some getting used to.

ive been made aware that i have strong opinions on my personal ranking of percy jackson characters so im making a post about it. bc thats what we do here on tungle.hell. experiencing brain worms? spread the word. @garecc i invite you to include your own brain worms here

for those who may not know, which i expect is most of my followers here, Travis (garecc) and i go way back to the days of a trials of apollo discord server that has since crumbled under the weight of various discourse and does not exist at this time. so if anyone understands pjo brain rot, its him.

ONTO THE RANKING. ill be focusing on main characters bc if i include side characters we'll be here all day and Sally Jackson would be every character in this top 5.

1. Hazel Levesque. Deserves better in the eyes of fandom. Gained pretty good control over the mist within one book. Has a cool magic horse. Similar tragic backstory to Nico, but not sulking about it. No shame in sulking, but its cool to see someone go through bad shit and come out still feeling mostly okay.

2. Will Solace. Unfortunately for me, I haven't finished the trials of apollo series yet, so i dont know THAT much about Will as he's primarily a background character. But Apollo kids and medics both get my utmost respect and appreciation, always. and he's a little bit of a sarcastic little shit, but the kind where people dont get annoyed with you bc its almost always funny and lighthearted. i know from hearing people talk about tsats that he's also a Sad Boy (which is to be expected as a demigod, tragedy physically cannot leave you alone.), and im excited to read about someone with my personality go through a mental breakdown :D!

3. Frank Zhang. Listen to me. How can he not be this high up. I don't even know where to begin with this guy, he's so gods damned cool. He's just such a good character and a good dude too! I'd love to be his friend. What a sweetheart, iirc he was the only person at camp jupiter who wasnt freaked out by Nico? he's so nice. children of Ares/Mars are usually mean, and he's so nice. i love him so much. also his life force is connected to a chunk of wood, which is kinda neat. he's a legacy of poseidon. he's canadian. im pretty sure his first name is Westernized bc his grandma calls him Fai, my last name was westernized when my great grandparents came over so i sort of get it though not nearly to the same degree. I ALMOST FORGOT HE CAN SHAPESHIFT!!! DUDE what a cool guy. we gotta move on, i gotta cut myself off. give him more attention in your fan works

4. Nico di Angelo. obviously a fan favorite, but im talking canon Nico here. im not talking about an uwu soft emo boi. im talkin about a sarcastic, pessimistic, deeply insecure little dude. listen, im not gonna talk about the things i love about nico because its been said a million times. its nothing new. im just gonna say that i love reading about characters that go through awful awful trauma and still overcome and find joy on the other side.

5. Rachel Elizabeth Dare. so my impulse is to put Leo here bc i adored him when i first read HoO. and if i didnt really think about it, i wouldve put him. but... Rachel!! how can you not love her! a mortal lady who can see through the mist, she fought with a hairbrush, she's the liveliest and loveliest oracle of delphi camp halfblood has ever and will ever know, she’s from money and hates it, she's an activist, an artist, way more helpful than the last oracle for sure. the mummy in the attic just left you to fend for yourself, Rachel will at least try to help you interpret what a prophecy means. she's blunt and talks a mile a minute, i love seeing my "flaws" represented positively in media.

honorable mentions: Leo Valdez of course, easily my number 6 spot. Apollo/Lester, we love seeing immense character development. Grover Underwood, probably the first time i ever had a definitive favorite character. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, romance would be dead and we wouldnt have a series without them.

First I wanna say

when they were kids Liz avoided both her brothers. they were obnoxious. the ones who got their family shot weird looks. She didnt want weird looks, and she certainly didnt want to be associated with the boys who made their family look like it was a mess.

But at home, she's chill to hang with them. michael and her get into a LOT of fights though, and shes pretty shitty to him specifically, since pushing his buttons is more fun and she hates him a lot more than she hates evan. michaels the one their father always has to complain about, and he's soooooooo annoying. if he starts something shes gonna finish it (bonus if she gets mike in trouble with will) but shes cool with them if theyre cool with her. she used to do their nails and makeup and whatnot before william told her to stop, though. she'll enjoy her hobbies with them, but she's not going to engage in theirs

As she gets older, her relationship with her father changed. the role of golden child becomes harder and harder to uphold until she finds she's hopelessly unhappy. her grades slip, she gets less and less attention from him and overall her happiness drops

at the same time evan is having the time of his life. his brother finally fucked off!!! he plays fucking. idk. basketball now!!! hes decided it was immature!!! fuck yeah win for the evan afton community

at the same time, hes making friends. hes getting along with the emilys lately, and theres a weird normalcy between him and mike. and also hes learning to get pushed around less and less.

Eventually, michael and evan arent lugged together anymore and liz is no longer isolated with her dad.

which means they finally have a reason to interact.

shes still so stubborn and snappy with him and her autism does NOT connect with his well (shes loud, excitable, low empathy, and bad with her tone of voice, while hes quiet, easily overstimulated, high empathy, and if you sound even remotely like ur mad at him he'll cry)

But they LIKE each other. like they dont click at all but they LIKE EACH OTHER.

so its a bit different from when they were kids. dont get me wrong, evan deserves better still, and liz is not the kindest, but shes nicer to him than most people.

and so elizabeth finds someone who really cares about her, and evan finds someone whos willing to try kindness with him.

all in all, they make a pretty good team. and while i think theyd eventually split their separate ways and get distant, they'd be able to fix it if they tried, yk?

where michael has years of making it up to evan, elizabeth just needs to show up. and be kind. and shes capable of both, even if she may not know it.

imagining it may take a while, but i see teen!dominic flocking to stone more so than kali. (it takes seeing how. oh. they wont be hurt here. he didnt yell or hit elizabeth back.... maybe he spreads the news to his siblings. maybe he can make them actually like it here. maybe everyone (except marcus) will stay here)

i feel like marcus is the only one who isnt scared of either of them. he didnt really get targeted by their father and views the entire foster care thing as more of an inconvenience than betrayal of trust.

(well, teen!butchet isnt really scared either. hes mainly angry, but that isnt directed at stone and kali. hes neutral in his opinion of them. theyre taking care of his siblings. thats something at least.)

anyways teen!butcher just told me hes out of the house so much because hes visiting their mom in the hospital at all avalable times. shes been worried sick about them suddenly all getting ripped away from her without her permission, but theres little she can do from her bed. (and teen!butcher is a mommas boy. its just a fact. look at canon!butcher)

Stone, calling Death when all of the kids & Kali are out of the house: Hey, you know a torturer with daddy issues, right?

Stone: I know someone he'd love to meet.

Roman is not going to be alive any longer. He does not deserve to rest in peace, either.

Imagining Stone slowly reaching out (he's doing it slowly so Teen!Dominic doesn't think it's too sudden) to pat Teen!Dominic's head. Because he wanted to give a little affection, just for fun.

He's trying his best, okay?

Kali 100% encourages all of the kids to visit their mother in the hospital if they wish to, because he understands them still loving her. And he wouldn't want anyone to feel like either him and/or Stone are replacing her in their hearts.

To be fair Michael had it coming. He killed his brother, bullied him and all that. I hate you michael. You know? I cant get how we are supposed to simpathize with him. HE KNEW ELIZABETH WAS THERE, BUT HE KEPT DOING CONTROLLED SHOCKS! HE DIDNT EVEN TRY TO TALK TO HER IN PIZZA SIM He wants to “fix” things, but he’s only breaking it more. He loves his sister, yet she treats her like just another killer robot. 

I hate when people make Michael seem like he loved his siblings. No. No he didnt. He terrorized one of them and completely neglected the other.

No, i dont think he ever cared for his siblings. He only wants vengeance against William. But really? I dont think he loved anyone else than himself.

But Michael is Scott’s pet, so no way he will see him this way. 

Elizabeth’s actions are also selfish, but in a simpathizing way you know? She just wanted the love her father should give her. Michael was even more neglected, but he could have just given up after Elizabeth killed him. He could have just tried his best living a normal life, but NOOOOOOOO he HAS to make his little VENGEANCE because EVERYONE HATES HIM oh he’s so sad and misunderstood oh my gah. 

Glammike is the worst theory EVER, in ALL games. If Michael really became Glamrock Freddy, he became a soft person NO DISGUSTING. HE IS A KILLER, A TORTURER, A NARCISSIST AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE!?!? 

EVEN SCOTT THINKS HE DESERVES A HAPPY ENDING WITH HIS SIBLINGS. NO. NO HE DOESNT. HE ABUSED AND TORTURED THEM. KILLED ONE OF THEM EVEN. HE KILLED HIS OWN BROTHER. AND EVEN SCOTT SEES HIM AS PRATICALLY THE CHOSEN ONE. 

I should draw Michael EVEN MORE emo. He thinks he’s like, so miserable and his life is the worst. And Elizabeth is literally his sister and shes right there. 

Somehow i hate the anti hero more then the serial killer of 11 kids what can i say? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
