Princess Elisabeth Marie Alice Viktoria of Hesse and by Rhine (11 March 1895 – 16 November 1903) was a German Hessian and Rhenish child princess, the only daughter of Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and his first wife, Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

An autopsy following her death confirmed that she had died of virulent typhoid, although it was rumored she had eaten from a poisoned dish intended for the Tsar.

Ernest Louis (25 November 1868 – 9 October 1937) was the last Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, reigning from 1892 until 1918.

Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha VA CI RRC, later Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia (25 November 1876 – 2 March 1936), was the third child and second daughter of Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia.

She was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and of Emperor Alexander II of Russia.

The Husbands of the Four Graces

Some time ago, I read a very interesting book about Queen Victoria's Hessian Granddaughters (Victoria, Elizabeth, Irene, and Alix.) The title was "The Four Graces," and ever since I read it, that is the way I think about the daughters of Grand Duke of Louis IV of Hesse and by Rhine and the beautiful princess Alice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, second daughter of Queen Victoria.

These young women were among the most marriageable princesses of their generation. They were beautiful, accomplished and Queen Victoria's granddaughters. There was no need to look for husbands for them. Among their suitors could be found future Kaisers, Tsars and Kings of England even though it was well known that any or all of the princesses could be carriers of hemophilia (inherited from their august grandmother Victoria.) Their sons might be bleeders. One of their brother's had been, therefore Princess Alice, their mother, had been a carrier.

The four men they married appear in the first photograph above; one marquess, one prince, one grand duke, and one Emperor (all of them very handsome):

👑Louis Mountbatten, first Marques of Milford Heaven (the man all the way to the left on the picture) married Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and By Rhine. Victoria and Louis had two sons and neither one of them had hemophillia.

👑The Hohenzollern Prince and brother of the German Keiser, Prince Heinrich of Prussia (the man to the right of Mountbatten in the photograph) married Princess Irene Luise Marie Anne of Hesse and By Rhine. They were first cousins since Heinrich was the son of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, the Princess Royal, who was the older sister of Princess Alice. They had three sons. Two out of the three had hemophilia. One died in childhood of causes related to that disease.

👑 Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia (the man to the right of Prince Heinrich) married Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Louise Alice of Hesse and by Rhine. Sergei and Elizabeth had no children.

👑The soon-to-be Tsar Nicholas II of Russia married Alix Viktoria Helene Luise Beatrix. Alix had one son, and he had hemophilia. (gcl)

Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine

Born Elisabeth Marie Alice Viktoria on 11 March 1895, the only daughter of Ernst-Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and his first wife, Princess Victoria Melita of Coburg and Edinburgh.

On 6 October 1903, Ernst hosted a large family gathering at Darmstadt for the wedding of his niece, Princess Alice of Battenberg, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.A few weeks later he took Elisabeth to stay with his younger sister, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna , Tsar Nicholas II and their family. At the Imperial family's hunting lodge in Skierniewice, Poland, Elisabeth went on long walks and had picnics in the forest with her cousins.Her nanny, who called Elisabeth "my baby," woke Elisabeth in the middle of the night and settled her in a window seat of the nursery so that she might look out on the game spread out upon the grounds below.One morning, the eight-year-old awoke with a sore throat and pains in her chest, which the Russian Court doctor put down to too much excitement with her cousins ​​the previous day. Her fever rose to 40 ° С.The imperial party didn't believe her illness was a serious one and went ahead with their plans for the day and attended the theatre as planned.By the evening Elisabeth was in even more severe pain and had started gasping for breath. Ein Porträt der beiden Schwestern Prinzessin Alexandra (1872-1918) und Prinzessin Marie (1874-1878), Töchter des hessischen Großfürsten Ludwig IV. (1837-1892) und dessen Gemahlin, Großherzogin Alice (1843-1878), gebürtig Prinzessin Alice von Großbritannien und Irland. Prinzessin Marie, die in der Familie liebevoll "May" genannt wurde, starb im Alter von vier Jahren an Diphterie. Am 6. November 1878 wurde bei Viktoria Diphterie diagnostiziert, und sechs Tage später auch bei der 6-jährige Alexandra. Stunden später lief Marie in das Zimmer ihrer Mutter, kroch ins Bett und küßte sie. Am Nachmittag traten bei Marie ebenfalls die Symptome der Krankheit und hohes Fieber auf. Am nächsten Tag wurde auch noch ihre Schwester Irene krank, und am 14. November erkrankten auch ihr Bruder Ernst sowie ihr Vater. Elisabeth war das einzige Kind, das sich nicht ansteckte, weil sie zu ihrer Großmutter väterlichseits geschickt wurde. Die Mutter und die Ärzte pflegten die Familie rund um die Uhr. Am Morgen des 16. Novembers erstickte Marie aufgrund der Membran in ihrem Hals. Die zutiefst traurige Mutter hielt den Körper ihrer Tochter und küßte Maries Gesicht und ihre Hände. Sie beobachtete, wie Maries Sarg auf Rädern zum Mausoleum der Familie gebracht wurde. Alice verbarg Maries Tod vor ihren anderen Kindern, die nach ihr fragten. Anfang Dezember wurden den anderen Kindern schließlich auch erzählt, daß ihre kleine Schwester gestorben war. Am 7. Dezember erkrankte Alice selbst an Diphterie. Sie starb am Morgen des 14. Dezembers. Die anderen Kindern und ihr Vater überlebten die Krankheit. Alice wurde neben Marie beigesetzt. Ein Monument geschaffen von Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890) zeigt die kleine Marie in den Armen ihrer Mutter. - Das Foto datiert 1878 ist von Carl Backofen (1853-1909).

HRH Prince Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel, KCVO (* 15. September 1984 in London; genannt Prince Harry, deutsch Prinz Harry, Herzog von Sussex), ist der zweite Sohn von Prinz Charles und Prinzessin Diana. Er steht nach seinem Vater und seinem älteren Bruder Prinz William sowie dessen Kindern Prinz George, Prinzessin Charlotte und Prinz Louis an sechster Stelle der britischen Thronfolge. Er ist ein Enkel von Königin Elisabeth II. und deren Gemahl Prinz Philip und entstammt damit auch dem Haus Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, einer Nebenlinie des Hauses Oldenburg.

Leben Kindheit und Jugend Prinz Harry wurde im Londoner St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington geboren. Er besuchte wie sein zwei Jahre älterer Bruder William die Mrs. Jane Mynor’s Nursery School in West London, die Wetherby School, die Ludgrove School in Berkshire und das Eton College, ebenfalls in Berkshire. Im Juni 2003 machte er seinen Schulabschluss (A-Level, entspricht dem deutschen Abitur) in Kunst und Geographie. Er wurde schon in seiner Jugend von Paparazzi verfolgt; Magazine der Regenbogenpresse und Boulevardzeitungen berichteten ausführlich über Harrys Partybesuche, Flirts und Kneipentouren (in Großbritannien ist „underage drinking“ verboten, aber verbreitet). Im Alter von 17 gab Harry zu, Cannabis geraucht zu haben.[1] Im Januar 2005 war er auf einem Kostümfest in einem Kostüm mit Hakenkreuz-Armbinde zu sehen,[2] das eine Uniform von Erwin Rommels Afrikakorps darstellen sollte.

Militärische Laufbahn Von Mai 2005 bis April 2007 erhielt er an der Royal Military Academy Sandhurst eine Offiziersausbildung. Im April 2006 wurde er in Anwesenheit seiner Großmutter Königin Elisabeth II. vereidigt und Mitglied des Gardekavallerieregiments Blues and Royals. Im Mai 2007 sollte er mit dem Regiment im Irak eingesetzt werden. Seine Vorgesetzten entschieden jedoch, dass sowohl er als auch seine Kameraden dadurch einer übermäßigen Gefährdung ausgesetzt wären, da irakische Untergrundorganisationen mit Anschlägen gedroht hatten. Von Mitte Dezember 2007 bis Ende Februar 2008 war Prinz Harry im Rahmen des ISAF-Einsatzes in der Provinz Helmand im Süden Afghanistans stationiert und nahm dort wie andere Offiziere an Fronteinsätzen teil.[3] Dieser Umstand war zunächst nur wenigen Journalisten bekannt; nach öffentlichem Bekanntwerden wurde er wegen Sicherheitsbedenken am 29. Februar 2008 vorzeitig aus Afghanistan abgezogen.[4] Prinz Harry in London, 2013 Ab Januar 2009 absolvierte Harry eine Ausbildung zum Hubschrauberpilot bei der britischen Luftwaffe[5] und schloss diese im Mai 2010 erfolgreich ab. Daraufhin wurde er zum Colonel-in-Chief bei den Heeresfliegern ernannt und ihm wurden die „provisional wings“ durch seinen Vater verliehen. Von Juli 2010 bis Februar 2011 setzte er seine Pilotenausbildung mit dem Kampfhubschrauber Apache fort.[6] Am 14. April 2011 wurde er zum Captain befördert.[7]Prinz Harry nahm im Dezember 2013 – gemeinsam mit verwundeten Soldaten – an einem 335 Kilometer langen Marsch zum Südpol, zu Gunsten der Hilfsorganisation „Walking With The Wounded“, teil. Am 13. Dezember 2013 erreichte die Gruppe den Südpol.[8] 2014 wurde er zurück nach London versetzt, wo er anschließend administrative Aufgaben der British Army wahrnahm. Zu seinem Aufgabenfeld gehörte unter anderem die Koordination von Projekten und Zeremonien in London, bei denen die Garderegimenter der Household Division involviert waren. Im Juni 2015 wurde mitgeteilt, dass Prinz Harry nach mehr als zehn Jahren aus der Armee ausgeschieden ist.[9]Er übernahm, wie viele Mitglieder des britischen Königshauses, die Rolle eines Ehrenobersten bei einem der Garderegimente. In seinem Fall waren es die Life Guards, die das zweite Gardekavallerieregiment sind und zusammen mit Harrys ehemaligem Regiment, den Blues and Royals, die Household Cavalry bilden.[10] Im Dezember 2017 wurde er in der Nachfolge seines Großvaters, des Duke of Edinburgh, zum Captain General der Royal Marines ernannt.[11] Privates Prinz Harry und Meghan Markle, 2017 Prinz Harry war von 2004 bis 2010 (mit einer Unterbrechung im Jahr 2009) mit Chelsy Davy (* 1985) liiert. Am 8. November 2016 ließ Prinz Harry über sein Pressesekretariat eine Verlautbarung herausgeben, worin Meghan Markle (* 1981) als dessen neue Freundin bezeichnet wurde. Am 27. November 2017 wurde die Verlobung des Paares öffentlich bekanntgemacht, die Hochzeit fand am 19. Mai 2018 auf Windsor Castle statt.[12][13] Offizielle Aufgaben

Harry ist Prinz von Großbritannien und Nordirland. Nach britischer Nomenklatur führte er bis zu seiner Hochzeit den Höflichkeitstitel „Prince Henry of Wales“, wobei sich „Prince“ auf Großbritannien und nicht auf Wales bezieht. Der Titel „The Prince of Wales“, zu deutsch „Fürst von Wales“, ist dem jeweiligen Thronfolger vorbehalten, also seinem Vater. Kurz vor seiner Hochzeit mit Meghan Markle verlieh ihm die Queen die Titel Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton und Baron Kilkeel.[14]Im April 2006 gründete Harry zusammen mit Prinz Seeiso von Lesotho eine Wohltätigkeitsstiftung, welche sich um HIV-/AIDS-Waisen kümmert.[15] Die Stiftung wurde „Sentebale“ getauft, was so viel wie „Vergiss mich nicht“ bedeutet. Der Name bezieht sich auf seine verstorbene Mutter Prinzessin Diana. Er will das Engagement seiner Mutter für Aids-Waisen fortführen[16] und sich generell stark für wohltätige Zwecke einsetzen.[17]Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder William organisierte Harry am 1. Juli 2007 ein Gedenkkonzert und zum 10. Todestag am 31. August 2007 einen Gedenkgottesdienst für Prinzessin Diana.[18] Bei Letzterem hielt er eine sehr persönliche Rede, die in der Öffentlichkeit und in den Medien als überaus positiv aufgenommen wurde.[19] Er ist außerdem Patron der Invictus Games, die er 2014 ins Leben gerufen hat. Bei dieser Veranstaltung treten verwundete Soldaten in sportlichen Wettkämpfen gegeneinander an.

Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and By Rhine.Born Elisabeth Marie Alice Viktoria on 11 March 1895 as the only daughter of Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and his first wife, Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She was named after her paternal great-grandmother, who was born Princess Elisabeth of Prussia. Her paternal aunt had the same name and was also nicknamed Ella.

Elisabeth died of a virulent type of typhoid on 16 November 1903.

Grand Duchess Alice of Hesse and By Rhine ~ the mother of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia and Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna Romanova of Russia.

Born Princess Alice Maud Mary of the United Kingdom on 25 April 1843 as the third chird of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Alice was engaged to Prince Louis of Hesse on 30 April 1861.Between the engagement and the wedding, Alice's father Prince Albert died on 14 December 1861. Despite the Queen's grief, she ordered that the wedding should continue as planned. On 1 July 1862, Alice and Louis were married privately in the dining room of Osborne House, which was converted into a temporary chapel.

On 13 June 1877 she was elevated to Her Royal Highness The Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine.

They had seven children :

•Elisabeth Alexandra Luise Alix 1 November 1864-18 July 1918.

In November 1878, the Grand Ducal household fell ill with diphtheria. Alice's eldest daughter Victoria was the first to fall ill, complaining of a stiff neck in the evening of 5 November. Diphtheria was diagnosed the following morning, and soon the disease spread to Alice's children Alix, Marie, Irene, and Ernest. Her husband Ludwig lV became infected shortly thereafter. Elisabeth was the only child to not fall ill, having been sent away by Alice to the palace of the Princess Charles, her mother-in-law.

Marie became seriously ill on 15 November, and Alice was called to her bedside, but by the time she arrived, Marie had choked to death. A distraught Alice wrote to Queen Victoria that the "pain is beyond words". Alice kept the news of Marie's death secret from her children for several weeks, but she finally told Ernst in early December. His reaction was even worse than she had anticipated; at first he refused to believe it. As he sat up crying, Alice broke her rule about physical contact with the ill and gave him a kiss. At first, however, Alice did not fall ill. She met her sister Victoria as the latter was passing through Darmstadt on the way to England, and wrote to her mother with "a hint of resumed cheerfulness" on the same day. However, by Saturday, 14 December, the anniversary of her father's death, she became seriously ill with the diphtheria caught from her son. Her last words were "dear Papa", and she fell unconscious at 2:30 am.Just after 8:30 am, she died.[64] Alice was buried on 18 December 1878 at the Grand Ducal mausoleum at Rosenhöhe outside Darmstadt, with the Union Flag draped over her coffin.
