DAY 28: "you're safe now"

It was hot, stiflingly so. Fao felt as if he couldn’t breathe as he ran through the desert. The sand sprayed up into his eyes, burning them and making him cough. He wasn’t sure what he was running to, or running from, but he knew he had to keep running. HIs lungs burned but he kept going, stumbling in the sand. He fell once or twice, but pushed himself up and staggered on. 

But once he fell and he couldn’t get up. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe and the sand under him was red, redder than before. He reached out, struggling for breath, and the sand was wet under his hand. It was wet with blood, and suddenly, looking around, there was blood everywhere. He couldn’t move, gasping for breath in the sand. It was his blood, his head was spinning as he bled out into the sand, staring up at the burning sun. Suddenly the blood began to choke him, trickling down his throat. Even as he coughed, he couldn’t stop it, couldn’t move to get rid of it. This was how he died, choking in the hot sun, bleeding to death completely alone. He couldn’t even call out for help, the words dying before they got to his tongue. 

He woke with a start, gasping for breath. His chest heaved and he was drenched in sweat, his heart pounding. He clawed at the duvet, pushing it off of him, and sat up, desperately trying to catch his breath. He could taste blood, but he was unsure if it was a hangover from the dream or if it was real. The panic still consumed him, the feeling of dread as he could feel his life slipping away. Despite the sweat that clung to him, he was shaking, trembling from head to toe. 

“Fao?” A soft voice broke through the dark silence of the room. Ely. 

He didn’t answer, he didn’t have the words to answer. He made a noise, trying desperately to catch his breath. 

“I’m going to put the light on, okay?” She said softly, flicking her bedside lamp on. The room was bathed in a soft yellow light, and Fao flinched. He’d not been expecting it to be so bright. 

Ely moved closer to her husband, resting a gentle hand on his bicep. He looked at her, his eyes wide with fear, and her heart broke. She hated seeing him like this, it never got easier. 

It took him a while, his head still firmly stuck in the past, but eventually he recognised her. Overwhelmed, he threw himself at her, wrapping his arms around her. 

“It’s alright.” She soothed gently, running a hand through his hair. “It was just a dream.”

He whimpered, but forced himself to focus on her. The solid warmth of her body against him, her gentle hands, the smell of her soap and shampoo. Home. 

“It’s okay. You’re safe now. I’ve got you.” She said. “At home, in our bedroom, nothing can hurt you. You’re safe.” 

It took some time, but he began to believe her. The trembling stopped, his breathing slowed, matching every breath of hers. Her hand running through his hair grounded him, as did the hum of her voice in her chest.  He was safe, he was home. Ely was home. She’d always be his home. 

“Safe.” He murmured, drowsiness beginning to overtake him. “Home.”

“You’re safe.” She repeated, settling back against the pillows with him still held close. “You’re home.” 

Fao relaxed into her, exhausted and glad of the comfort. She flicked the light off, but kept him close to her, still soothing him and reassuring him he was safe. Eventually, he began to drift, his breathing evening out, safe in her arms.

I think Our Flag Means Death needs a wee Deaf gay pirate who uses (grammatically terrible because I’m still learning) BSL and lots of knives and guns.

Because they are - as a commenter put it - a portable apocalypse. Also, how FUCKING lonely must it have been to be the only Deaf signer you know of? How messed up would it be to be isolated because no one bothered to learn your language and you couldn’t speak? They deserve a few stabbings.

(Also they still need a name. I’m thinking Eli, Urchin, Greenie, Boom, Artie, Faolan, or just You)

10. Any romance sub-plots?

16. What’s your MC’s favorite food?

This question has me like this because I have like 4 main characters all liking something different but Here Goes!

Liath: She really likes this venison stew, flavored with herbs and butter with turnips that are cooked just right

Doran: Lamb. Cooked in any sort of way as long as it's lamb. It's his favorite thing.

Orla: She has a sweet tooth, so baked sweet bread coated in honey and dipped in a sweet sauce.

Faolan: Roasted hare that he caught himself. He loves the smokey flavor.

20. If your MC(s) was in another book, what book would they be in?

I think they would fit into Juliet Marillier's books, or maybe into Cornelia Funke's world, too! (that or in the world of Eli Monpress jsjjsjssjsjs)

Recovery - Whumptober Day 30

Finn had been going from strength to strength. He'd landed on his feet with a job with the police, half moved back in with Jess and repaired their relationship. With the Irregulars quieting down, he'd gone for a job with the ambulance service. 

Obviously they'd snatched him up, agreed to his terms and trained him up to go on the road. It was something new for him to conquer, and he fit right in.

"We've got an adult male. Collapse, breathing, not responding normally. Cops are on their way." Finn reads from the screen in front of him. "Side of the road, so they're gonna keep an eye on it for us."

They pulled up with a swear from Finn. "Grab the rest of the kit? I know him." He drops to his knees by Fao's head, his parabag following.

"Fao, mate? Can you hear me?"

Fao comes to with a groan, his eyes flickering open for a second. But he recognises Finn and groans again, curling onto his side in an attempt to ease the pain. It didn’t help.

"You're alright. You collapsed, but we're gonna get you sorted, yeah? My crewmate's just getting some stuff, okay?"  

He didn't reply, just tried to push Finn away. He didn't need this, he just wanted to sleep.

"Fao, come on. You gotta stay awake for a little bit. Have you got any pain?"

“Pain.” He echoed, curling up tighter. “Fuck off.”

"Faolan. It's just me, okay. Don't swing for me when I touch you." Finn turns to his partner. "Faolan Blackwood. Served with me quite a few years ago, and is a general pain in the arse, yeah?"

“Jus’ leave me alone.” He mumbled thickly. “‘M fine."

"Yeah, that's why you're on the floor." He carefully clips the sats probe on Fao's finger. "Talk to me."

“No.” He grumbled, shivering. “Go ‘way.”

"Okay. I'm gonna call Ely then, get her to meet us at hospital, okay?"

“No.”

"Why not?"

He whimpered. “‘M fine.”

"I know you are. You think you can get onto the bed? We'll help."

“Go away.” Fao grumbled. 

"Alright. C'mon, we'll get you up." Finn turns to Ben. "We'll take our time, he's got a habit of trying to leave and just generally causing problems, haven't you?"

Fao pouts. “Says you.” His voice is thick and he's shivering.

"Yeah, I know. But you're not well, Fao. It's my turn to look after you, yeah?" Finn rests a careful hand on Fao's shoulder. "You've got a fever, mate, and honestly? You look like shit."

Fao groaned, moving away from Finn’s touch.”’m goin’.” The pain got worse but he forced himself into his back and then into a sitting position, swaying.

"Hey. Careful."

“Goin’.” He mumbled, forcing himself onto his knees and then up on his feet. But the pain just gets infinitely worse and he crumples, crying out. 

Finn's already behind him, catching him before he falls. "So much for careful. It's okay, Ben's got the bed behind you. Just sit, okay?"

Fao doesn't have a choice but to sit, the pain just getting worse with every movement. He whimpered, clinging to Finn. 

"It's okay, Fao. I've got you." He absentmindedly rubs Fao's shoulder. "Where's your pain?"

“Stomach.” He's quiet, his voice a little scratchy. “‘m gonna be sick.” He realises this very suddenly, swallowing thickly to try and stop it. 

"It's alright. Just breathe." Finn doesn't manage to fully move out of the way in time.

There's not much to come up, it's mostly bile and some blood, and Fao can taste it. It makes him groan and he mumbles an apology to Finn.

"No apologies." His hand is soft against Fao's back. "It's okay. You wanna lie down? We'll get you in and sorted, yeah?"

Slowly, Fao nodded. He laid down, curling up on his side. He wasn't sure if it helped or not but he did it anyway. He wanted it all to end, he was fed up. 

They're quick to move him into the back of the ambulance, into the warmth and away from prying eyes.

Mousefolk

The Mousefolk have a deep love of art, literature, song, and craft, and will often spend a lifetime perfecting their trade. True masterworks are rarely seen by the outside world, instead they are preserved and passed through the generations. To be a keeper of lore and heritage is among the highest honors and greatest responsibilities in Mousefolk culture. The Mousefolk who do not end up learning a trade will often put their skills to use pursuing esoteric knowledge, training as defenders, spiritual leaders, rangers, covert agents, or they might even travel the world as an adventurer-for-hire.

VIRTUOUS AND HEADSTRONG Despite their generally flighty appearance, mousefolk are a very honorable people. They believe strongly in personal honor, less so in the idea that the actions of others can impugn that honor. When a mousefolk makes a mistake, especially one that causes harm to others, they will work hard and at long lengths to correct that mistake.

MOUSEFOLK NAMES When a Mousefolk is old enough to read, they are taken by an elder to the clan's archives to study the lore and histories of their people. After several years, the individual is allowed to pick their own name, either adopting the name of a past hero, or inventing a new name for themselves. A Mousefolk reaches adulthood at the age of 5 and lives to be about 40 years old.

Alignment. 

Most Mousefolk are neutral, and tend towards good. They try to keep the conflicts of the other races at arm's length, but display remarkable ferocity when their friends, families, or communities are threatened. A reverence for nature and life is close to the heart of Mousefolk, and they are loath to take a life if it can be avoided. They prefer to live quiet and unassuming lives, giving honest work for honest pay.

It had gone so, so badly wrong. It was supposed to be a nice day out, just Fao and Ely, enjoying their time together. They rarely got any, with work and all of their other commitments, and so their time together was precious. Rather than spend it in the house, where they’d likely be disturbed by Finn and god knows what else, they’d decided to go out, get away from it all. A nice day in London. Meandering around Hyde Park before heading to Oxford Street to shop. Fao could really spoil Ely, get her all sorts of things she wanted (even though she protested it most of the time). Then they had a nice meal, talking and drinking an enjoying themselves. 

It wasn’t until the evening, when they were ready to head home, that things went sideways. They grabbed Ely first, knowing full well that Fao would fight to help her, and fight he did. He didn’t have a lot on him, given they’d been in town. He didn’t need to bring a whole armoury with him for a nice day out. Or, maybe he did. He had his gun with him, of course, but he was in a busy area, and a gun would just attract attention to them, and not the kind of attention he wanted. 

They were quick to grab him too, despite how he fought back, and they were bundled into the back of a van. Ely looked terrified and he had to admit he couldn’t blame her. He hated this, just as much as she did. At least he was used to it, it wasn’t exactly the first time he’d been taken. At least they hadn’t knocked him out this time, he wasn’t keen on the repeated head trauma. 

He sat with his knees drawn up to his chest, glowering at their captors. 

They soon dumped them in a cell, hands bound and ignored. Fao was glad of it, he didn’t want them up in their faces. He knew he’d lose his temper, and that wasn’t going to help. 

Ely looked scared, and he hated it. He tried to comfort her as best he could, but he knew it wasn’t much. They were still stuck, after all, with no explanation of what their captors wanted or why. He didn’t even know who they were. Tomas’ men? Someone Fred had pissed off with a deal gone wrong? He had no idea. It took everything in him not to shout, and eventually someone came for them. 

Henri.

“Well, isn’t this a pleasant surprise? The pair of you, enjoying my hospitality.”

“Fuck off, Henri!” Fao snapped, yanking against his bindings. “You’ve no business with us, let us go!”

“Oh, but quite the opposite.  I have plenty of business with you. Unfinished business.” He crossed the room to Ely, crouching in front of her. 

“How are you, pumpkin?” His voice was sickly sweet, and he reached out to stroke her face. 

“Don’t touch me!” She snapped, jerking away from him. 

“Now, now. I taught you better than that, didn’t I?”

“Fuck off.” She spat. 

“Leave her out of this.” Fao said, his voice cold. 

“Why? She’s the whole root of this problem.”

“She’s not! She’s an innocent party, you don’t need to involve her in this. She’s not done anything to hurt you.”

“And yet without her, I wouldn’t have anything to get to you, would I? I had a lot of fun with your boyfriend a while ago.”

“He was never my boyfriend.” 

“No? You sent him to do your dirty work, didn’t you?”

“He does what he wants to do, I don’t control him.”

“That’s what they all say. No matter, I’ve got you now. That’s all I need.”

“Leave Ely out of this, and you can do whatever you like to me.”

“I wouldn’t speak too soon. I need her. It’s no fun just to fuck with you.”

“What do you want, Henri?” Ely asked. 

“Information, pumpkin. This man of yours that you’re so besotted with is quite powerful.”

“She doesn’t know anything! Leave her out of this.” Fao shouted. 

“She might not.” Henri agreed. “But you do.”

Her blood went cold and she shook her head. “He won’t tell you anything.”

“Maybe not at first, but I can get creative.” He gestured to the men waiting behind him, and they moved forwards to grab Ely. They dragged her forwards to the middle of the room, and bound her to a chair. 

“Leave her alone!” Fao shouted. 

She tried her best to struggle, to slip her arms free as they were tied to the arms of the chair. It didn’t work. She was stuck. So she spat in one of the men’s face. 

She hit one of the men square on the cheek, a fat glob of spit trickling down his face. “Little bitch!” He exclaimed, smacking her. 

“Get your hands off of her!”

Grimacing, Ely squeezed her eyes shut for a second. “He won’t say a thing.”

“He will. I just need to find the right way to ask.” Henri said, moving close to her again now she was tied to the chair. “How should I play with you, pumpkin?”

“Fuck off.” She told him. 

“That’s not very kind, is it?”

“You don’t care about kindness.”

“I’ll be kind and I won’t hurt that pretty face of yours.” Henri said, eyes dragging over her. 

“Like hell.��� She replied, choosing to be angry over showing fear. There was no point in showing fear. 

“That bastard of yours is a bad influence on you.” Henri scoffed. 

“He’s a good man!”

“I don’t think you understand what it is he does, Pumpkin.” 

“I know what he does.” She replied. “But he’s a good man. A better man than you’ll ever be.”

“I knew you were stupid, but I didn’t realise you were that stupid. Nothing but a stupid whore.” 

“Shut the fuck up!” Fao shouted. 

“I’ve not even touched you, and look at him. All upset already. What is it they call you? The Direwolf? Yappy little shit more like.”

“Fred will kill you.” Ely hissed.

“Fuck it, I’ll kill you!” Fao growled. 

Though it was pointless, Ely still tried her luck. “Let us go.”

“And why would I do that?”

“Because you loved me once.”

Henri scoffed again. “Not anymore.”

“No? You’re jealous. You’re still upset that I left you.”

“I need you for information.” 

She steeled herself. “Then what are you waiting for?”

Henri smiled at her. “I was just thinking of what I could do to you. I’m sure I’ll think of something better, soon enough.” He withdrew a knife from his belt, and then lifted one of Ely’s legs, slipping off her shoe. 

She stared at him, daring him to do whatever it was he was planning. The knife glinted in the low light, but she couldn’t show her fear, so she pushed it down. 

He scored the knife over the sole of her foot, watching the blood bead in the mark he’d made. 

Ely cried out, trying to get her foot out of his grip. “Fuck you!”

“Ah, ah!” Henri warned, gripping tighter as he dragged the knife across her foot again. 

She cried out again. “Get off!”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

“Leave her alone! Hurt me if you want to hurt someone!”

Henri laughed. “No, I don’t think I will.” He said, and once more dug the knife into her foot. 

“Leave her alone, you cunt!”

Ely watched in horror as he dropped her foot and then lifted the other, sliding her shoe off. 

“You know how to stop this,” he said casually as he did so, “you just have to tell me what I want to hear. There’s no need for any of this.”

“Stop it!” Fao exclaimed, straining at his bindings. “Let her go!”

“Well, that isn’t the right answer. Maybe I should remove a toe.”

“Don’t you fucking dare!”

“No?” Henri asked, dragging the blade up the sole of her foot. The edge found the side of her big toe. 

“Leave her alone.” Fao’s voice was cold. 

The knife bit deeper and Ely shouted, trying to pull her foot away once more.

“Stop it!” Fao shouted, his voice hoarse. 

Henri grinned, and dropped the knife with a clatter. He had other ideas, he’d done enough to stop Ely from getting to her feet. He turned away to pick up a pair of pliers, turning them over in his hand. Then, he delicately took one of Ely’s hands. “There’s plenty of other things I can do.” He tightly grasped a nail, and pulled, hard. 

She screamed as her nail was ripped from the nail bed. “Get off! Stop it!”

Henri laughed, moving onto the next nail, which he ripped out cleanly. “Oh, bless.” He said, voice sickly sweet. 

“Stop! Let her go! Please!” Fao begged.

21. 'Does This Look Infected To You?'

It wasn’t that Fao had been doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing, but he also hadn’t been doing something that he strictly should have been. And of course, it had gone badly. It always went badly when you were pushing the boundaries of what you were meant to be doing. 

Checking out a bar that was doing more than it should, Fao had been having a nice evening when he’d had a knife pulled on him. Of fucking course, because why not? He thought he’d gotten away without getting hit, but right at the last moment one of his attacker’s mates had pulled another knife, and slashed right down his back. Straight across his shoulder blade, and it was murder. 

He’d managed to get himself home, got Ely to patch him up (though she swore at him the entire time, told him he was an idiot and she hated him, and was very pale by the time she’d finished). He looked after it the best he could, but it was deep and it hurt and he couldn’t see it very well. 

It had been getting better, but the past few days it had been worse. Painful, and really hot. But Fao couldn’t see it properly, just because of where it was, and he struggled to give it a thorough clean when he started getting worried about it. He didn’t dare tell Ely, and then she went away for a few days, some anaesthetics conference somewhere. 

In the end, he had to admit defeat, and headed down to see Steve. At least he could give it a proper look at and clean. And Ely wouldn’t be there to tell him off. Hopefully the fact he’d been freezing cold for the past few days, and consistently nauseous was just a coincidence. 

“Steve?” He called. 

Steve appeared out of his office, frowning at Fao. "Afternoon, Faolan. Everything okay?"

“Faolan?” Fao echoed. “Oddly formal, Fao’s fine. Can you take a look at something for me?”

"What have you done this time?"

“I got this cut the other day, it’s just gotten more and more sore over the past couple of days, I’ve felt a bit run down with it too.” He said. “Take a look for me?”

Steve narrowed his eyes. "How deep of a cut?"

“Ely threw a few stitches in it for me.”

"For fucks sake, Fao." He rested his head against the doorframe, his jaw clenching. "Go sit down."

“It’s Fao now, is it?” He shot back, perching on the edge of the bed. 

"What would you rather?" Steve asked, rummaging in the drawers. "Idiot?"

“Fao is fine.” He retorted, and pulled his shirt off over his head. “What do you think? Does this look infected to you? I can’t see it properly.”

Steve took a steadying breath. "What do I think? I think you're even more of an idiot than I thought."

“I’m going to take that as a yes?”

"Yeah, it's a definite yes. Let me get the local, I'll be nice."

“Oh, I get basic human decency do I?” Fao grumbled. “Guess I’ll get comfortable, then.” He settled on his stomach, comfortable so Steve could work. 

"You know the rules. You fuck up, you deal with it."

“I didn’t fuck up! I got it sorted as soon as I got home.”

"I like Ely as much as the next person, but she's not able to deal with this sort of thing. You should know that. Her skills don't lie in the surgical area." 

“When I came back with it, none of you guys were around. She might not be a surgeon but she has enough skills to close a wound. She cleaned it at the time and made sure to take it slow, I told her everything I wanted doing and she did it. What else was I supposed to do?” Fao grumbled. 

"Come to one of us sooner. We can't afford you to get ill."

“Except it was fine.” He said grumpily. “Just fix it and I’ll fuck off out of your hair.”

"Yeah, it really looks fine."

“Yeah, well, I’m here now. Fix it and I’ll leave you in peace.” Fao couldn’t help but snap. If Steve kept on being a dick, he’d end up storming out and trying to get Finn to sort it later.

"Watch your tongue."

Fao sat up, wincing. “Seriously?”

"Lie back down and let me sort it out."

“I will, when you stop acting like a dick to me.”

"You got yourself into this mess, shut up and let me fix it."

Huffing, Fao settled back down on his front, his head resting on his forearms. There was no point getting into an argument with Steve, they’d just both end up frustrated.

"Try stay relaxed, okay? Just going to give you the local."

Fao hummed. “Sure.”

"Sharp scratch."

Fao exhaled, ignoring the sting. He was quiet for a moment, letting Steve finish what he was doing to make sure the whole area was numb. “Have you been busy?”

"Busy enough."

“Anything interesting?”

"Not really. I wasn't meant to be here today."

“Oh? It wasn’t me, was it?”

"No. Not you."

“Good. Didn’t want to have left you in the lurch.”

"I couldn't get any overtime at the hospital either."

“Didn’t fancy a day to yourself? Lie in and that?”

His jaw tensed. "Not today. Can you feel that?"

“Mm, no. All numb.”

"Good. I'm going to start, okay? Let me know if you need a break."

“I’ll be fine. You going to open it an’ clean it?”

"I'm going to have to. It's all infected."

“Alright.” He said softly. “Am I okay like this? Got enough light?”

"You're fine." He said tiredly. "Just stay still."

“Okay, yeah.” He said softly. “Shout if you need me to move.”

"You're fine." He repeated. It wasn't easy work, but he'd done it a thousand times over. He knew he had to focus, and it allowed him to pull his attention to make sure he did it right. 

The more time dragged on, the harder it was to ignore them, ignore the squeal of tyres and the scrape of metal biting against metal. He was grateful as he finished the final few sutures, dropping the instruments into the tray with a clatter. He shoved it on the side and discarded his equipment.

"That's done." Steve said sharply, stalking off and slamming the door behind him. He couldn't breathe, the grief rising to his throat and strangling him. Fao would need antibiotics and fluids, but he just needed five minutes, needed to get back in control; he was no use to anyone like this. 

It had been a painful, awkward silence as Steve worked, the older man clearly not interested in conversation. He was very different to the Steve Fao knew normally, who would have told him off but at least teased him and made jokes as he sorted it out. All he could hear now was just his breathing, and the sound of him working. It didn’t hurt, though, and Fao could just sit through it, letting his mind wander to other things. He’d even managed to doze a little, comfortable on his front. 

Steve dropping his stuff with a clatter brought him back to reality, making him jump. His voice was cold, and he heard him walk away, the door to the office slamming behind him. 

Slowly, Fao sat up, mindful he’d been laying down for ages. Steve hadn’t emerged, as he glanced around the basement, and he frowned. “Steve? Are you alright?” He called, standing up to go and knock gently in the office door. “Is everything okay? Do you want me to leave? I can come back later…”

Steve took a shaky breath to steady himself, clearing his throat before he spoke. "Everything's fine. You need antibiotics."

He pulled the door open, pushing past Fao. "You'll need IV."

Fao frowned, stepping back. “Are you sure you’re alright?” He didn’t even protest the notion of IV, too confused by the way Steve was acting. 

"I've said everything is fine. Do you want to sit on the sofa? Or the bed?"

“Uh, bed?” Then he was a little more out of the way. And maybe he could nap, stop bothering Steve about things. 

"Right. Get yourself settled down."

Fao sat, still very on edge. He was perched on the edge, uncertain. He didn’t want to piss Steve off any more. 

Steve sorted out the antibiotics, as well as some fluids, and signed them out before heading across to Fao. "Arm?"

Fao offered it wordlessly, looking at his lap. 

Steve didn't bother with the usual small talk as he tried to find a vein. The infection certainly wasn't helping, and he struggled more than usual. Eventually, he seemed to have one he thought he'd be able to use, flushed it, and sat back.

“All okay? Sorry they’re so shit.”

"Does it hurt?"

“No, it’s fine. Shoulder’s hurting though.”

"You can take some paracetamol for it."

“Alright, yeah.”

"Do you need something else?" 

“No, no. I’m sure paracetamol will do the job, I’ll take some when you’ve finished with this.”

Steve narrowed his eyes, giving the antibiotics and connecting the fluids. He stood with a quiet huff, grabbing some paracetamol and passing it to Fao. "There."

Fao hummed his thanks, avoiding Steve’s gaze as he took the tablets dry. He wasn’t about to complicate matters by asking for water. 

He glanced over at Fao. "Have you taken them?"

Fao nodded. “Yeah.”

"Really? Couldn't wait for a glass of water?" He muttered to himself, turning away to tidy up. 

“Didn’t want to bother you for one.” He said simply. “Less work for you.”

"Until you choke."

“I’m careful, don’t worry about it.” He said. “Besides, if I choked it’d be less work for you overall.”

"Might as well just leave you to it."

“Exactly.” Fao muttered, swinging his legs up onto the bed. He was too sore to lay on his back, so he settled on his side (he’d get tangled in his IV on his front) and closed his eyes. 

Steve let him sleep. He didn't have the energy to continue with Fao. He also didn't trust him not to do anything stupid, so that meant he had to stay in the basement too. 

It was a distraction, whether good or not didn’t matter, not really. But the longer he worked in silence clearing and cleaning up, the more his head caught up with him. Distracted, he sent his coffee mugclattering to the floor, where it shattered into pieces. He swore loudly, the pile of folders he'd just dumped on the side toppling to the floor too. He yelled in frustration, and swiped the rest of the bench clear before dropping his head to his hands.

Fao startled at the ruckus, quickly sitting upright, his heart pounding. A little disoriented, he half expected to see his uncle throwing things across the room, but quickly realised it was Steve. 

He didn’t want that anger turning back on him, and so he settled back down, eyes closed. If Steve thought he was still asleep, he couldn’t be mad at him. 

It wasn’t long before Fred appeared in the doorway, having heard the noise from his office. 

“What the fuck is going on down here?” He exclaimed as he walked in, but stopped in his tracks when he saw Steve. His voice immediately softened, and he crossed the room to the other man. “Steve? What are you still doing here? I thought I’d sent you home.”

Steve turned, hand pressed to his lips and tears in his eyes. "I couldn't."

“You’re just as daft as the boys.” He said fondly. “I don’t expect you to be working, today of all days. You were supposed to take today to look after yourself.”

"I had to do something. I couldn't go back." He admitted quietly.

Fred reached out to squeeze his arm. “You need rest.”

"I can't."

“I know you want to stay busy, but they wouldn’t want you working yourself to the bone.” Fred said gently, his voice low. “At least come upstairs and be with us?”

"Fao needs someone to keep an eye on him."

Fred finally noticed Fao, curled up on one of the beds, looking asleep. “Ah. Can’t he come up too?”

"He'll need to be back down for some more antibiotics. And I need to clean all this up." 

“Let me help.” Fred offered, crouching to start to clear the floor. 

Steve stuck his arm out. "No, don't. It's my fault."

“That doesn't matter, I'll help you.”

"Fred, please. Just let me finish up. I'll come up later, bring Fao up too."

“Let me help you out, though.”

"No." He pushed Fred's hands away. "I've said no."

“Come on, don’t be so stubborn.”

"I'm not." He said sharply. 

“Steve…”

"So I can't do anything now? I can’t come to work, can't tidy up this crap?" He turned away, shoving things roughly onto the bench, and muttered under his breath.  "Can't fucking save them."

“Hey, hey. Nobody is saying you can’t do things. I told you not to come in because I thought you needed time for yourself. I’m trying to help you tidy up, not say you can’t tidy up.”

"Whatever."

Fred sighed. “What would they say about you being so stubborn, hmm?"

Steve didn't move. He hadn't expected Fred to bring them into it again. He turned away, heading into the office and shutting the door sharply.  

Rolling his eyes, Fred set about finishing clearing things up. He threw what remained of Steve’s coffee mug away, and cleaned the floor. He didn’t know how best to rearrange the bench; the basement wasn’t his domain, after all, and so he left it. 

He’d not seen Fao jump inches when the door slammed, and instead headed out of the room. He’d tried his best and he’d not managed to get through to him. He’d try again later, give him his space for now. 

Meanwhile, Fao hadn’t slept at all, overhearing the whole conversation. It dawned on him then that Steve wasn’t being a dick for no reason. Everyone knew he was with Fred because he’d lost his family, and Fao realised it was more than likely an anniversary of some description.  That explained why he was a bit touchy, why he’d been so upset with Fao. 

Fao felt bad. He’d caused fuss for Steve when he’d obviously just wanted to be on his own. But he couldn’t go anywhere now, he still had fluids running. He wanted to apologise, but he’d wait until he emerged from the office, rather than seek him out. 

Steve had locked himself in the office and slid down the door, head in his hands and wood hard against his back. He'd tried so hard to keep it all together, but it hadn't worked. It never did. The sobs weren't unsurprising, but unwelcome, and he did his best to stay quiet. He'd made enough noise for Fao already, and it wouldn't be fair on him - he knew he'd been short with him too. 

Fao didn’t hear anything at first, the basement oddly quiet after the shouting and slamming doors. But soon enough he was sure he could hear crying. Oh, Steve. 

It broke his heart to hear him like that, and Fao drew himself up to sitting. He was torn, didn’t know whether to go to him or leave him. He wanted his peace, probably. He didn’t want to be seen crying, and he doubted he wanted Fao when he’d been the source of his frustration. 

Eventually, Steve emerged, his eyes red despite his efforts to hide his tears. He glanced over at Fao, a flare of embarrassment as he saw he was awake. He swallowed thickly. 

"Your fluids are pretty much done. You can go back upstairs."

“Oh, thanks.” Fao murmured, not looking at him. “Do I need to keep the cannula?”

"Yeah, I'll wrap it for you."

“Thank you.” He murmured, offering Steve his arm. 

He worked quickly, making sure the cannula was tucked away and not likely to be pulled or caught. "There, it's done."

Fao stood up, turned to leave and then paused. “Steve?”

"What?"

Fao wrapped his arms around Steve, pulling him close. “Thank you. For everything.”

Steve tensed, suddenly choked up. He returned the hug, careful of Fao's injury. "Thank you Fao."

Fao sighed happily, glad Steve had returned his hug. “I know today’s a shit day an’ all… but you’re family to us, too.”

He squeezed his eyes shut to stop his tears, holding Fao tight. That meant more to him than the kid would ever know, and he knew he didn't deserve them.
