Jihyo felt good about asking Mina out in the moment, and while photographing on assignment, she was able to quiet her mind, getting lost in fine tuning her aperture and changing lenses for the haunted house shoot. But when she finally got home that night, she threw up, her body and mind at war. 

Creatures like Mina were the reason her parents were dead. She shouldn’t want to be around them, let alone want to flirt with one. I should want to kill her, Jihyo thought. She threw up again, body heaving violently. That was the problem. Jihyo didn’t want to kill Mina. If only her parents could see her now. Thank god they can’t. Her eyes burned with tears of guilt and shame, but there was no doubt in her mind now that she really had a thing for Mina. She got up shakily, gripping her bathroom sink tightly to support herself while she steadied her breath. She reached for her toothbrush, and decided to wash her face too while she was at it. With a fresh face, she finally was able to look at herself in the mirror and admit to herself what it was she really wanted: Mina. Now there was only one thing left to do: be up front with Mina about knowing what she was, and about how she knew. Maybe, if she was honest, Mina would still stay.

That night, Mina dreamt of Jihyo. The vampire found herself riding in an elevator up to the rooftop deck of a hotel. When the doors opened, Jihyo was there to greet her. She looked gorgeous, her tanned skin peeking out beneath a blue and white summer dress. The air was warm, and the stars were already out. Jihyo had been waiting for her. 

“There you are,” she said, smiling up at Mina. Jihyo extended her arm forward, holding out a glass. Mina recognized the dark liquid swirling inside instantly as blood. “I got you a drink,” Jihyo said casually. “I thought you might be thirsty.” But as Mina reached forward to take the drink from Jihyo’s hand, the glass suddenly shattered, cutting Jihyo deeply in multiple places. Her warm blood began to mix with the dark, cool blood from the glass, and Mina froze. She felt unable to move suddenly, helpless as she watched the blood seep out of Jihyo’s badly cut hand. And then, to her personal horror, Mina felt her mouth watering.  

“Mina?” Jihyo asked. Her blood dripped down her fingertips, adding to the wasted puddle of perfectly good blood on the floor. Mina knew she should help– Jihyo was wincing in pain from her injury. Her once pristine dress was now getting stained with blood. “Mina? Are you okay?” Jihyo’s voice sounded far away. Mina could feel Jihyo’s big, brown eyes on her. The vampire didn’t respond and instead licked her lips. Her breathing felt heavy and labored, and her hands were starting to shake. She willed her claws to stay at bay, to maintain her humanoid form for just a little longer, to ignore the free flowing liquid she so desperately craved.  

“Ji–” Mina’s voice faltered. She was about to lose control, and she knew it. But her mouth felt full, and she couldn’t warn Jihyo. She tried to clear her throat to start again, but there was now so much saliva building up in her mouth that she couldn’t speak for fear of actively drooling in front of Jihyo. She felt like she was about to throw up from how hard she was suppressing her instincts, disoriented as the stars in the sky suddenly became mobile, shooting across the dark nightscape at lightning speed. There was a ringing in Mina’s ears as she lurched forward, against her will, baring her fangs now. She grabbed hold of Jihyo’s bleeding hand. Warm, she’s so warm. And she smelled so good, just like she always did. It’d been a long, long while since Mina had a drink from a living source. 

Mina pressed the woman against the ledge of the rooftop, lacing her fingers with Jihyo’s. She could feel the warmth from Jihyo’s blood running over her own fingers, and she desperately wanted to taste it. But as thirsty as she was now, she was also aroused. She wanted Jihyo, she realized. Badly. Mina trapped the woman there, using her body to press up against Jihyo’s so she couldn’t run. The vampire could see Jihyo’s chest heaving, and she listened intently to Jihyo’s heart as it pumped all of that warm, delicious blood around her body, out through her wounded hand. Mina leaned in, inhaling Jihyo’s scent for a moment while preparing to do the unthinkable and sink her fangs into the side of the woman’s neck. Suddenly, the vampire felt a shooting, radiating pain in her chest. She looked down to see a pure, silver stake lodged in her heart. Had Jihyo just stabbed her? 

Mina woke up then, gasping for air. Breathing heavily, the vampire turned on her side, throwing her covers over her head, trying to rid her brain of the dream. That’s funny, she thought. It’s like I can almost hear my heart, as if it were still beating. Her eyes snapped open. It was indeed not her own, undead heart. Someone was in the room with her. Before she could plot her next move to deal with the intruder, a voice beside her asked, “Who was that?” 

Mina leapt out of her bed and clutched her chest, stifling a scream. Going straight into defense mode, the vampire immediately started to transform into one of her more lethal forms, an oversized black mamba snake. 

“Wait!” the voice called, sounding more familiar. “Mina it’s just me! Eww, oh stop it, you know I hate when you turn into a snake,” Sana wailed. The succubus pouted, now sitting up on her knees on Mina’s bed. “I just wanted to cuddle,” she explained innocently. “But then I saw you were sleeping…”

Mina let out an unearthly irritated sound, half hiss, half exasperated “Ugh!”, as reverted back to her humanoid self. “Jesus Christ,” she said, exasperated. The vampire didn’t even have a wildly beating heart to soothe, but she clutched her chest anyway. “I thought we agreed you’d ask first!” she scolded. But the demon’s puppy dog eyes were no match for her momentary annoyance and fear. The vampire sighed. “Oh, alright,” said Mina, waving an arm toward her bed. “Get in.” Sana squealed with delight and dove back under the covers, her curled horns peeking out. The moment Mina got back in bed, Sana wrapped herself around the vampire. “Um…” Mina cleared her throat a bit, trying to angle her hips away from Sana’s body. She hadn’t realized just how excited she’d gotten by her dream.

Sana had already noticed, though. “So…” she murmured, nuzzling her face against Mina’s. “Tell me who that woman was.” The succubus grinned. “Wanna roleplay, MiMi? What was her name? Jean? Gianna? Jisoo?” 

Mina blushed. “Jihyo,” she mumbled, unable to meet Sana’s eye. “And no, I don’t want to role play. She’s a human. She’s just a– a friend.” 

Sana gasped. “You made a human friend?” She pulled away from Mina and rolled on top of her, straddling the vampire. “Tell. Me. Everything. How did you meet her? And when?” Sana bounced a bit on top of Mina excitedly, making the vampire hold back a whine. 

“S-Sana please,” Mina begged, putting her hands on the demon’s hips to try and steady her. “You’re not helping…” 

“Ohh, I’m sorry,” Sana said mockingly. She ground her hips teasingly against the vampire. “Do you want me to stop?” 

Mina grunted, covering her eyes. It was no use, though, she was painfully hard. The succubus tossed her light brown hair over one shoulder and leaned down, grinding herself against the vampire’s abdomen again. “Oh, don’t be shy. Tell me, pretty thing,” she cooed. “Should I stop?” 

The vampire could only whine in response. It didn’t happen often, but every time Mina woke up with morning wood, the succubus was always there to take care of it. Ever since she had met Sana last year, the demon held powerful holds on her and Momo. Mina was never sure if the love she had for Sana was devotional, romantic or platonic, but it didn’t matter. In a way, she knew she belonged to Sana, just like Momo did. It didn’t matter if the three of them slept with or had crushes on others. They always came back to each other. It was just how Sana liked it. 

Mina hesitated, then, after a few moments, shook her head. Sana smiled wickedly. “That’s what I thought,” she purred, sliding her hands under Mina’s oversize t-shirt. “You poor thing,” she said, planting light kisses along Mina’s jawline while her hands travelled up toward Mina’s chest. “That cruel woman got you so worked up, didn’t she? I’ll take good care of you, my sweet vamp, and then you can tell me allll about that pretty little human friend of yours.”

Leo was an active 5-year-old. In many ways, Wyatt was grateful for that. He was always willing to go for a swim, a walk with Eloise, skating at the rink, basketball in the park. He was an easy-going kid, too; he wasn’t fussy, was very polite, friendly and a bit shy. All in all, Wyatt counted himself lucky to have such a wonderful son, such a wonderful wife, such a wonderful life.

This day, however, was testing his patience. 

“Leo, honey,” Eloise was saying, a bit exapserated. She had driven them out to a cove on their motorboat and was sat on the high stool near the wheel. “Please be careful near the windshield, I don’t want you to hit your head.”

Wyatt could tell Leo was also exasperated, but he nodded anyways. “Yes, mama.”

She leaned down to frame his head with her hands and kissed his blonde curls. “I don’t want you getting hurt.”

“But it’s easier to grip there if I move the ladder!”

Eloise sighed and looked over at Wyatt. “Then have your daddy and I help you on further down the side, okay? Please? Just until you’re older and your arms are longer.”

Leo bit his lip. Even as a young boy, Leo was very careful with his words, just like his father. Wyatt smiled at him and nodded encouragingly. 

“Okay,” Leo said. “I’m sorry, mama.”

“Don’t be sorry, baby,” she replied gently. “Why don’t you hop back in, huh? Then we’ll go back home. Daddy’s going to grill some steak.”

Wyatt sat up. “You wanna help me bud? I’ll teach you how to use the grill. We can make the steak sauce together, too.”

Leo nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah!” He scurried to the ledge, stood with one foot up, and yelled as he jumped off into the water. 

Eloise laughed and came to sit on Wyatt’s lap in the shade of the canopy. “You know, we’ll make a chef out of him, yet.”

Wyatt rubbed a hand up and down her thigh. “Or an athlete. He’s got enough energy for an entire army.”

“Eats enough for one, too, my Lord.” Eloise blew out air through her cheeks. “He’s going to cost us a fortune in food when he’s older.”

Wyatt just took her cheek in his hands. “Hey,” he said. She turned and smiled at him, leaning in for a kiss. “We did good.”

“Yes.” Eloise’s teeth were white against her tan skin, her blonde curls, exactly like their son's, bobbing as she nodded. “We did.” She pressed their foreheads together. “He’s a very special boy, our Leo.”

Before Wyatt could agree, Leo was calling out for them.

“Mama, daddy! There is this huge plant that’s growing from the bottom, come-” 

There was a clunk, and a cry, and then Eloise was looking up abruptly and pulling out of Wyatt’s arms, rushing over to where Leo was lying on the floor of the boat. There was blood, stark on the white paint of the material, and Leo was curled up and whimpering. Eloise jerked her head to Wyatt. “Get me the First Aid Kit! We gotta go back to shore.” She hushed Leo gently, elevating his head in her arms while Wyatt scrambled for their emergency bag. “Sh, sh, baby it’s okay. Mama’s got you, sweetheart, you’ll be just fine.” She placed a kiss right beside the cut just as Wyatt kneeled down beside them. “The gauze please, Wy.”

Wyatt didn’t know how his wife was so calm, cool, and collected while he was inwardly freaking out. His hands shook as he opened the case, pulling out a roll of the white fabric and handing it to his wife. She thanked him, holding Leo in the crook of her elbow with one arm to press the material to her son’s head. When Wyatt still didn’t move, she turned to him. 

“Wyatt, to the shore. If we need to go to the hospital, we need to be on land.”

Wyatt scrambled up. “Right. Right, okay.” He took the key from the seat and turned on the motor, muttering to himself. “Right, the shore. The land, then the hospital.”

And with Leo’s whimpers as their background music, he turned them towards the boat launch.

“When did it start going gray like this, Le?”

Leo looked up at Finn and then to his father with questioning eyes. “I don’t know. Dad?”

Wyatt walked over to find Leo and his boys sat on the couch in their living room, where Eloise had once again brought out a photo album for them to peruse. The particular photo they were looking at was Leo in the hospital after he’d banged his head. He’d gotten a few staples, the scar not incredibly visible now due to the sheer quantity of hair he had, and the photo showed him with a bandage wrapped around his head and smiling with a lollipop in his mouth. Eloise was sat beside him, laughing, and stroking his hair back from his face. 

“I don’t know,” Wyatt answered. “Not for a couple of weeks.” He chuckled softly. “I remember when you first noticed it. You got really freaked out that you’d been possessed or something.”

Leo rolled his eyes and blushed when Finn laughed. “Did a New Orleans monster of the deep possess you, baby?”

Wyatt smiled fondly. “Let’s just say he had an active imagination.”

Logan reached up to play with the gray strands. Wyatt couldn’t count the number of times he had done the exact same thing during Leo’s childhood. It jolted his heart, still, to see someone newer doing that to Leo. Finn and Logan were gentle with him in a way not many other people were. Mostly, people tended to look over Leo, or used his sweet disposition to their advantage- Wyatt didn’t know all of the details of his high school relationship, but he knew that Leo was treated unfairly. He and Eloise had noticed him retreating in on himself, and they were slightly worried when he’d gone off to the NHL, alone and newly out to them. But then he’d call them and talk about his roommates, at home and on the road, smiling and laughing and with a twinkle in his eyes that had Eloise and Wyatt exchanging knowing looks. It hadn’t been the plan, their Leo dating two of his teammates, but though it was a surprise, it was also a joyful revelation. He smiled more easily now, laughed harder than he ever had anywhere else, except for maybe in their home. And he was obviously in love and committed for the long haul. Wyatt remembered that exact feeling when he’d brought Eloise home for the first time to his parents. They were out in the country, a typical Cajun household, and were overjoyed that Eloise wanted to know them, to cook with them, to speak French with them. He remembered feeling so in love the first time she’d gone fishing with him and his father, prepared crab with his mother and older brother. He felt proud of Leo for finding that love, even if it was in an unlikely place.

“I think it suits you, soleil,” Logan said, interrupting Wyatt’s musings. “It’s like a ray of sunshine.”

“Yeah!” Finn agreed. “Sunshine for our sunshine.”

Leo was blushing really hard now. “Guys stop that.”

“Don’t you dare,” came Eloise’s voice. She came in from the kitchen with a plate of butterscotch cookies, and Logan’s eyes widened in excitement as she set the it down. She took Leo’s head in her hands, just as she had the day he’d fallen on the boat, and every day before that, and every day since, and kissed him hard where the gray streaks grew from his temple. “Don’t you let them stop, you hear me, sweetheart?” She patted his head. “And please still be careful near the windshield.”

“Mama, I’m six foot three, I can get on the boat now.”

Eloise smiled mischievously. “Well, then make sure Logan is careful near the windshield.”

Logan choked slightly on the cookie in his mouth as Finn burst out into laughter, his entire body shaking. “Oh man, Eloise. You should hang out in the locker room more often, the boys would get a kick out of you.” He reached across Leo’s body to scuff Logan’s head. “Way to take him down a notch.”

That made Leo laugh and turn to look delightedly at Logan. “That’s what Kasey said to me the first time I made fun of your height in the locker room.”

Logan rolled his eyes so hard Wyatt thought they might permanently stay back in his skull. “Va te faire.”

“Language, Tremblay,” Finn scolded.

Eloise tisked. “Oh, we’ve heard it all, don’t you worry. We’re a hockey family.” She turned her raised eyebrows to Leo. “But Leo knows not to repeat those words.”

Leo’s mouth hung open in surprise, which set both Finn and Logan off into laughter once more. “Mama, I’m twenty-two-”

“And you will use appropriate language in this household, I don’t care what your boyfriends do.”

“What? How is that fair? Dad swears all the time-”

“Leo.”

Wyatt knew she was just teasing, but he still couldn’t help but be amused at Leo’s narrowed eyes. “Sorry, mama.”

Eloise nodded. “Very good.” She clapped her hands and wrapped her arms around Wyatt’s waist. “Now, how about we have some cookies and then we go for a boat ride, hm? All this talk makes me want to get on the water.”

“Ouais, sounds good,” Logan said, swallowing what must have been his third cookie. He and Finn both gazed up at Leo adoringly. “Will you drive the boat?”

“If you want, sweetheart sure,” Leo replied. He pressed a kiss to Logan’s forehead. “Since I’ve got older I’ve basically become a chauffeur.” 

“A very handsome chauffeur,” Finn corrected. He gently brushed the gray tuft of hair. “Very handsome.”

As the boys continued talking, Eloise nudged Wyatt’s hips. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and turned to look at her.

“We did good,” she said in soft French. “We did so good.”

Wyatt pressed their temples together and kissed her lightly. They both turned to look at their son, who had an arm around each of his boyfriends, Finn with a hand on his thigh and Logan with his on Leo’s chest. They were laughing, and Leo’s gray hair bounced with the shake of his body. Wyatt smiled. “Ouais. We did good.”
