Look the other way from time to time. The world is full of surprises. One day we will think it obvious that elephants and other animals are persons, non-human persons with real legal rights. The right to not be abused, enslaved, exploited, killed and consumed. If we don't get this soon then it will be the end of what we call our civilisation. A new relationship with the other beings and systems that inhabit this planet is needed if we are going to thrive. Let's face it, 99% of us are not thriving while we destroy our home, so we need to find a better way, a way in which humans can be part of the solution rather than the biggest problem on this planet, AND truly thrive at the same time. The elephants overlooking Woolwich Ferry are no more! Amazingly, a brave citizen confronted the the elephant thief and positively roared in outrage and indignation at the miscreant, who it has to be said was wearing a local council vest and drove a local council badged car. He ran away and left the small elephant but the big one got smashed. Heroic citizen Stuart Ellis didn't leave it there. He called the council to find out if they had sanctioned the removal of the elephants, and apparently they are aware of them but had NOT asked for them to be removed. So he was a thief in a council vest! BUT! I hear you say, an elephant is not a person because a person is a human! Aha! I say, only recently have we understood a person to be human, a slave was never a 'person', they were classified amongst the furniture in bills of sale back the day, and there were court cases to establish that WOMEN, yes half the population, were persons. Before that they were not persons under the law. In the US a corporation, a sociopathic entity by anyone's estimation is a 'person' under the law, yet it is not human. SO I put it to you, dear recipient of this message, that 'person' is a fluid definition and one which we should broaden to include other beings with whom we share this planet. Personhood confers legal benefits which are not enjoyed by animals at present, they are merely 'things' to be used and abused for 'product'. This is the biggest issue and ongoing horror of our times, yes we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and yes we must stop throwing plastic into our oceans, but these will have scant effect if we ignore the elephant in the room: animal agriculture, the environmental devastation caused by meat, dairy and fishing added to the cruelty on an epic scale, as these sentient beings are turned into 'product' for our consumption.
