So brief explanation on how the mermaid to human transformation works
It’s not an ability all merfolk posses, and must be given to them by the elders. They can transform to a human at will while on land, and a to a mermaid while in non-sea water. However, they will be forcibly transformed back into a mermaid if they touch sea water, and must water 1 hour on land before het can transform back.

ok, so elemental might be one of my favorite pixar movies of all time. and i want to talk abt it cause no one else will.
Tumblr media
i don’t know what drew me in first. the fact that it was a love story which i was NOT expecting given the awkward vanilla mayonnaise way it was advertised. maybe it’s the fact that it’s a story about a child of immigrants first and foremost, a point that got me right in the chest.
Y’all i don’t know; it was the weird and amazing visuals, it was the relatability, it was the cute love story that didn’t feel forced or weird in the slightest.
Tumblr media
it was funny, heartfelt and fucking adorable. i’ve never seen my story told through animation like this before in such a creative and articulate way (not the love part lol but the child of immigrants bit).
Respectfully, this movie had the worst fucking drop date in HISTORY. and i know it’s gonna flop. No one’s gonna give this the chance it deserves and pixar put zero energy into promoting this the way it needed to be knowing that it had atsv AND the little mermaid to compete with it.
All i ask is that you give it some love. I really think you’d like it
8.5/10
**the theaters are draining my bank account smh**

SPOILERS FOR "ELEMENTAL"
Tumblr media
Okay so I just watched the new elemental movie and it made me realize something very interesting
Now, I'm not going to get into the plot or the side stories or the fact that movie is just OBSESSED with everyone's dad
What I'm here to talk about it the fact that this movie actually has the 2 main characters utter the words "I love you" to eachother and that got me thinking
I have NEVER once heard the love interests in a disney movie say those words. Like- NOT ONCE- Seriously!
Rapunzel and Flynn: Never said it just got married
Cinderella and the Prince: Never said it, just got married
Jasmine and Aladdin: Never said it, just got married (I have since been corrected!)
Sleeping beauty: Girly is literally in a coma for most of the movie
Snow white and Prince: Guy kisses a 12 year old's corpse, gets married to her and never says a word
And then there are the cases where one of them says it but they never once say it to eachother
Beauty and the beast: Belle says it while her man is literally dying, like–??? He says he loves her in a different scene but they don't say it to eachother
Ariel and Eric: She says she loves him to her father but Eric he never says it
Tiana and Naveen: She says she loves him he never says it back (he says he loves her in a different scene when she isn't there)
Hercules and Meg: Meg had a whole ass song about it but they never said it to eachother
And there's a bajillion other examples
This was just like a total culture shock to me. It's actually incredible that almost all the disney movies, which center around love and couples, never have the two characters who are MEANT TO BE TOGETHER say even a single "love ya shawty" "Aww radical, love ya too bb"

Mermaids: Healing and finding power within your own voice
Tumblr media
As cliché as it sounds, mermaids came into my life and my practice in an incredibly odd time of my path as a practicioner; and by that I mean, the way they came into my space and the way I came into their radar was an unexpected surprise that leaves me with a slight sense of disbelief to this day.
On contrary to other beings I have encountered, they choose to announce themselves subconsciously, that meaning they showed themselves via very vivid dreams where I would find myself in an isolated beach, of floating in a calm ocean or of the feeling of waves crashg against my body, the feeling of sand brushing in my skin.
But the most vivid one I have ever experienced was one where one of them waved at me from the waves, beckoning me to swim with her in a very childish but cheerful manner; an invitation that I subconsciously accepted, diving in after her and waking up as my legs became a fish tail.
This summer was one dedicated to silently healing from the emotional chaos that the previous year had been, so I spent most of it in quality time with my inner circle or in silent alone contemplation appreciating my own company. However one thing that I always loved since I was a child, my favourite summer activity was spending my summer days at the beach.
With this in mind, on the contrary of other experiences I have had with other elemental beings, where everything is discussed and settled in the deepest of meditations in my makeshift ritual chamber, the mermaids had other plans for me; because this time, it was not just them beckoning me but the ocean, the water itself that was calling me, enticing me to dive deeper and take the same leap I took in that dream.
So as the weather warmed up, the more their invitation enticed me to move foward with what my intuition was telling me to be the right choice.
With this, my ritual chamber became the waves themselves in a two months long weekly healing ritual. For everytime I dove in the ocean (even in the company of friends) the lighter my energy got and by consequence, the easier it was becoming for me to express myself and my emotions more fluently, as if they were also made of water.
Because water, as many know is an element of nourishment, of deep emotions, of the feminine and where all other beings on earth came from.
Settling all we know from the stories and legends about the mermaid, even as practicioners we need to understand that their energy goes beyond seduction, beauty or attracting a partner (not that it is not capable of it, but that it is simply not just it) because true attraction, a trick they know and use quite efficiently can reach many other aspects of your life, which is in itself empowering.
With this, their main focus was empowering my voice, by encouraging me to speak my truth, to express my deepest emotions and thoughts and understand the raw power that words carry themselves, mundanely and magically; and last but certainly not least, the importance of being heard and understood.
For when you walk a path that connects you deeply to each element, you end up becoming yourself like that element, with this in mind it is possible to also become like the elemental who is teaching you these lessons, adopting their traits and habilities as their own: for mermaids it was more than just empowering my voice, it was also understanding the deep meanings of the words of others, understanding and listening to the tone of their voice and perceive the true energy behind the sound of them.
Sound is like energy you see, it can be manipulated according to the purpose it is meant to fit, and the mermaids are one of the few masters of this art, even teaching you eagerly their craft if they deem you fit.
For the voice is what makes a mermaid, it is their essence, and to step into this journey with them you must first understand the power your voice carries; even if you believe you have lost it, if it was taken from you or silenced, for it can be regained, rebuilt with time and dedication, to nourish is a concept that many beings can teach you, but if your calling is a voice to be heard and understood; mermaids are quite the first step.

argh @pigtailedgirl im thinking again!!!! (many such thoughts)
BEEN THINKING ABOUT fraser bending reality and the show as a fairytale and what each part of the story is doing for fraser, with a dash of "and where will it end"
also because i was writing about rayv and using the word crutch in this one post, and it's not wholly the right or wrong word, because i think ray vecchio was (is, my man ait'ent dead) a life-altering meeting and partnership for the both of them [insert here all my meta about what they mean to one another and the ways they change things for each other] and that technically they probably could've just trundled along until they got old and retired to a cabin in canada or smth, see "we bonded" (unless ray got married, but that's another thought for another day)
but also that this relying on ray to be there became such a single strong pillar for fraser (with the less strong pillars of his apartment and wider community, one of which does still exist -- sort of like sherlock holmes' familiars) that it no longer being there opened up some doors into rooms that fraser had merely closed, rather than properly dealt with the contents of. he only admitted (badly, but still) that he had imagined murdering gerrard ("his father's killers") in season four. and there's something going on about the whole ongoing joke of "i first came to chicago on the trail of my fathers killers..." introduction, it's alllll about that in a way, this story, always was. waiting to see if it comes full circle somehow in the finale
anyway. he's Affected. the lack of support structure (singular) makes other things fall apart. i think, crucially, belief in a sense (belief that things can get better? belief that he can fix things? belief that he can heal, properly?) and that belief affects the magic
and then i think about that in terms of fraser and reality. fraser can lend a man 100 dollars and the money will return to him. he can find al capone's lost treasure. he can save a kid from getting lost in the system by giving him some money to walk diefenbaker on the promise he keeps going to school. he can ensure the return of two tsienshien heritage items after theve been kept apart for over 100 years due to colonialism. etcetc.
in s2 there were ongoing questions (that had first been raised way back in the pilot, and especially in s1 the wild bunch) about whether the city -- with all its corrupt institutions, environmental destruction, and cruelty -- is actually good for fraser. that it might "eat him alive" as it were (thanks gerrard)
and in s3-4 (im still figuring out whether to say 3pt1/pt2 or s3/4) things get... bleaker (there has been bleakness in s1-2 but the only truly helpless episode is juliet, which... i'll save the rayv part for another post, but it does belong to the thinking): the murder of a young woman is solved but she's still dead and the episode is really about her father's grief. another young woman is saved from execution, but she still spent eight years on deathrow and is severely traumatised. that ultimately quite depressing boxing episode. bruce spender discovering the betrayal of his brother. janet. and of course, the flooding of a village that fraser spent his childhood in, something he doesn't even attempt really to stop
and the thing is, i still read fraser as bending reality around him, it's just that he's been weighed down by things now, they are Affecting him more, and as consequence he simply can't be there for the world in the same way. reality is bending to fit his own pain, and so the world is sadder too
but. he's not given up. he's still doing the job and things sometimes absolutely do get fixed (mojo rising as an example). and most of all, the person who's on the receiving end of fraser trying to fix things... is ray kowalski. whose life when we meet him is not at its best. he's lost himself and doesn't really know where to go looking to do anything about that, but i do think he's proactive from the start in trying even though his first two thoughts (killing the man who embarrassed him as a kid, wooing back his ex-wife) aren't the best ones and he first has to face that in order to move forward
ray kowalski has fixed quite a lot of things for himself at this point. his confidence, his relationship with his father, his identity (literally, he has become kowalski after a good long time of having to pretend to be vecchio), past mistakes, he seems to be healed from his divorce, it's goin pretty well for him
i like the idea that fraser is offsetting his own dreams by giving ray his -- lean hard into caretaking-as-service and pretend that's the same thing as being okay. and meanwhile, ironically, ray is modelling what fraser needs to be brave enough to do (face his past head-on). i think ray kowalski will also be good for fraser, and it's a different trajectory (not immediate, they needed a good half season/13 episodes to really start), a different Structure (ray kowalski having something of a "fixed my own lifejacket, now we should get to yours" feeling happening as of earlyish s4) a different Outcome (more somber than previously, but important)
but ultimately, still a fairytale, in that fraser is still a fairytale and the very structure of the show bends around how he feels
as for where it ends (this story, not necessarily the story if one can imagine a "and what next")... well yeah. we shall see. ultimately the two halves of the arc will come together (ray'n'ray) and that will make something change again. the belief comes back?

All the recent merformers talking on a few circles I'm in made me dust off an old concept I share with my pal @nine-tailed-grimm ... at least a lore-inspired mural. I need to think for another moment about what to compose with it.

Fortshell, the kingdom of metal. Their settlements are found with underwater mountain ranges. Their technology is second to none in the merworld, and their strongholds are nearly impenetrable.
Artifridg, the kingdom of ice. Found with the Arctic circle, not much is known about this kingdom, as it’s people are isolationist.
Venamodium, the kingdom of poison, a lawless land found writhing deep sea canyons, it house a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Psyche, the kingdom of the mind. Found in coral reefs, this is deeply religious state, the people giving praise to ocean mother. While some sections of the kingdom are open minded, many are intolerant towards outsiders.
Luminarus, the kingdom of light. Often found near the shore, these merfolk are known more being pranksters, often pulling stuns(some not so harmless) on nearby humans.
Nightfall, the kingdom of shadow. Found with in the abyss, this is a gothic kingdom. Outsiders would find its inhabitants gloomy or eccentric, while they like their macabre home just fine.
