Ok so you're looking at the aftermath of Helene and you're thinking "shit, how would I keep my phone charged? What about my neighbors?" and you have some outdoor space and some cash. Your friendly formerly off grid sheep farmer is here to help.
You need this set up right here:
To that you will need to add:
Y connectors:
The 100aH (amp Hour) deep cycle battery of your choice - lead acid AGM will be cheaper, lithium (LiFePo) is more expensive but lasts much longer.
Finally, you need a small pure sine wave inverter like this one: https://a.co/d/70vRd79
Plug the panels into the Y connectors then into the single wire to run to the charge controller. They are now connected in parallel. Take them outside to a sunny spot and face them south and prop them up at about a 45 degree angle. This isn't perfect but it will be good enough.
Connect your battery and charge controller. Connect the panels to the charge controller. All of the places to do this are labeled and all you need is a Phillips screwdriver. I recommend doing it once in a non-disaster situation so you know you can do it but you'll be fine. Boom, you are getting electricity from the sun!
The inverter draws power even when it's not running so don't leave it hooked up when you're not using it. When someone needs to charge their phone, put those alligator clips on the matching color battery posts, turn the inverter on, and plug in the phone/radio. Voilà! A single 100aH battery is not going to run a bunch of things but it will help keep cell phones charged without using up the gas in your car.
The panels are weatherproof but everything else needs to be protected by the way so you'll need to set this up in a shed or garage or in the house. Lead acid batteries can produce hydrogen gas when being charged but just having one isn't a big risk.
FAQ:
Yes, you can permanently mount the panels to your roof if you own your home etc. They're designed for that!
It is true that places sell "solar generators" - those are a charge controller, battery, and an inverter in one box at a very high price point. When a component goes bad you will be unable to replace the component and must replace the entire $1000 box. They are also not upgradeable or expandable, this is.
You do not have to buy Renogy, I recommend them because they kept me in electricity for the years I was off grid.
You do not have to buy the kit, you can buy the components of it as and when you can afford them!
Remember to keep your battery on a trickle charger.

Found the right screwdriver shape for the weird screws, cracked open the control panel, and figured out why the washing machine knob won't pull or push. A support bracket snapped off the timer box.
Well, more than one. But this was the one I found and I can reinforce the box with some electrical tape to keep it in place.
Timer boxes aren't expensive, but I don't want to replace a completely fine part when the answer is some tape and glue.

So last month I spent $25k in electrical upgrades and getting a new water heater and a new drain installed in the basement. The meter had to be upgraded from 100 amps to 125 amps in order to provide enough juice to the tankless water heater, and they had to add another sub panel for more breakers so that they could split some things up to avoid burning out.
Turns out, that wasn't enough, and a couple breakers tripped a few times. I have the electricians come back out, and now they test the outlets and wiring in the house, and good fucking lord, I was living in a match box. Soooo many overloaded circuits and wires with visible burn damage.
So we pulled out another $25k and had the entire house rewired. Just the outlets, the lights were all chugging along just fine, but they replaced every outlet and switch and sawed open my walls and ran new up to code wiring. I'm going to have weeks worth of drywall repair ahead of me.
Anyway, the head electrician of the team doing all the work...his name. is Thor.
An electrician. Named. Thor.
This is not his nickname. His real, actual name.
A bit on the nose lol

Statement of Jade Connor, regarding a strange theme park attraction. Recorded by [REDACTED], head Archivist of the Magnus Institute.
I don’t even know why I decided to send this your way. I know you won’t believe me, nobody does, I just… I need to feel sane for once after last week.
It was last Saturday, if I’m remembering right. I had taken my friend Emma out for a day at this small theme park at the edge of town. Emma Davis… That was her full name. I have to keep reminding myself.
The park was really nothing special, just a small place with a few standard carnival rides and food stands. In all honesty, we were just coming up on finals at university and needed to relieve the pressure with some mindless entertainment, but I had a sort of nostalgia for that park. I had been going there since I was around 8 years old, so I know the place like the back of my hand… It’s no wonder that I picked the new building out so easily.
It looked a bit like one of those old “ghost train” rides, but none of it was visible from the outside. The building was just a small, weathered black box with faded murals painted on the front that I couldn’t make out at all; if I looked closely, I could have sworn I saw the remnants of painted faces, but the paint had streaked and bled too badly to see any details. The only legible text was the word “FUN” in pink and green block letters above the singular entrance door. No information, no name, just “fun.” That should have been my cue to stay away, paired with the sense of paranoia I felt just seeing that damn building, but Emma was already heading in by the time I noticed, shouting her usual lighthearted mockery of me being “too scared.”
I can’t explain how, but I knew I couldn’t let her go in there alone.
The interior of the building was… strange. It definitely wasn’t a dark ride like I expected, more like some kind of funhouse. The entrance led us into a dimly-lit hallway; the walls, ceiling, and floor were all painted black, but it looked… unnaturally dark, as if we were standing in an endless void. A series of doors were painted on the walls, each one skewed oddly in perspective and painted in neon colors so bright, they hurt my eyes to look at too long. I could have sworn there were ultraviolet bulbs set up somewhere, but I couldn’t see any visible light fixtures… or anything, for that matter. No fire sprinklers, no exit signs, no electrical panels… Nothing.
I don’t know how long I was lost in my thoughts. My mind was screaming at me to turn around and leave, that something just wasn’t right here, but I was forced back to my senses by a low creaking sound. One of those doors, the ones that couldn’t possibly be real… somehow opened. It had been replaced by an opening in the wall that looked like it had always been there, with no trace of the door itself to be seen. I could hear Emma’s voice laughing in the distance, calling for me to “find her” and “catch up” before blending in with a cacophony of indistinct background music.
All I could do was run after her.
The hallway opened up into… I can’t even say if it was a room, a hall, or something completely different. It looked like the interior of a dark ride with no track, just a winding path surrounded by these strange props and cutouts, each one painted in those same, blinding neon shades. None of them looked like they were supposed to be animated, but I could have sworn I saw them moving from my peripheral vision. Everything around me was just… constantly shifting and changing, even the path itself was winding off into oblivion. And the music… That damn music. It sounded like 5 tracks of frantic cartoon music looping over each other. I couldn’t make out any words, any instruments, whether there were actual voices or if it was all an instrumental, but I felt like there was something in there, like a message I was supposed to understand. Did I hear Emma’s voice up ahead, or was it part of the audio? There was no way I could tell, but I could have sworn I heard her laughing.
I had to have been walking for hours, maybe even days. My ears were ringing, panic building up in my chest as I broke into a run, screaming out Emma’s name, struggling to navigate this deteriorating maze of lights and colors. The walls had faces. The props were pointing at me and laughing. The path was narrowing, trailing off into oblivion and herding me in one direction until… Until I reached the room. Until I saw it.
It was a small room, completely filled with doors. They were all stacked on top of each other, defying logic and space, the walls extending upward infinitely like some twisted rabbit hole I was at the bottom of. I somehow knew not to touch them, that they wouldn’t let me leave yet. And in the center of it all… God, I can’t describe the thing.
It was twice my height, this… complete mockery of a person. Its arms were far too long, allowing its clawed, twisted hands to scrape the floor as if they’d been dislocated from their sockets. The thing smiled, the corners of its mouth extending past its face, exposing what had to be around 7 rows of teeth. Its eyes constantly shifted in color, spiraling voids that pierced right through me. It said nothing at first, but I could hear the audible snap of its neck as it tilted at a painful angle, motioning toward one of the doors nearby.
Just past that door, I could hear Emma’s voice. I couldn’t tell if she was laughing hysterically or screaming, but the sound was… completely unnatural, a noise that came from the very depths of insanity.
“Don’t worry, she’s having fun.”
The thing’s voice felt like broken glass scraping my brain, like a voicebox that was nearly out of battery. My head pulsed with pain, a primal instinct of panic overwhelming my body.
The next thing I knew, I was sprinting down another hallway. My vision was fading in and out, the ear-bleeding soundtrack returning to laugh at me as that figure blinked in and out of my peripheral vision, always behind me as if it knew I wouldn’t get anywhere. The last thing I remember was dropping to my knees, my nails sinking into my arms as I screamed, and…
..and then I was back outside. The second my eyes snapped open, I was lying on the pavement, surrounded by concerned onlookers and emergency personnel. I can barely remember what they claimed had happened, something about a “spontaneous breakdown” leading to me collapsing.
It had only been two minutes since I apparently “broke down.” The building was nowhere to be seen.
Asking about Emma led to the same response of concern… There were no records of her ever entering the park. There were no records of her anywhere; trust me, I checked. Not in the contacts on my phone, not online, nowhere. It’s like she was just… erased as soon as that thing took her.
I haven’t left my home since then. I can still hear that damn music looping in my ears, I can see that thing in the corner of my eye… It’s only a matter of time before it comes for me next, and I know it won’t let me go this time.
Statement ends. A follow-up has been requested, but we can find no records of a “Jade Connor” or their contact information in our databases, except for this transcript.

Since there was nothing to do about any of it, Jordan finished his stewing in the dust and went back to work on the bunks, fighting for time as the daylight slipped away from him. By nightfall, he had them assembled.
He stopped at Walmart to pick up some affordable sheets, a couple of toys, a break-resistant travel mirror, and some string lights that wouldn’t work until he fixed the electricity. He did plan to have electricity in here, by the way. Eventually. It was on his list of things to do. But first, he needed to replace the faulty electric panel and install a solar battery system. And well, that took money. Quite a lot of it.
He’d get there in his own time. But life didn’t seem to be interested in waiting for him to get there in his own time.
He was glad to see this day over. So he took his tired body and trampled soul to bed.
The camper was too big for him alone. There were bunks for children here, but no children to sleep in them. There was a double bed big enough to be filled with love, but his lover was two thousand miles away. And he had it all to himself.
This is what you asked for, you stupid fool.
“And you’re only just getting started,” Maya said.
“It could take years,” she said.
Years.
He’d only been gone for weeks and already his whole life was in shambles. What would be left of it next year?

The Mechanics of Magic
Read along with me :D - Chapter 2
Chapter 1 | Previous Chapter | Next Chapter
The Mechanics of Magic is a multiple-pov fantasy novel set in an original world where magic exists openly alongside early internet-level technology.
The book follows the surviving prince of a deposed magical royal family, who has been living in secret for two decades, trying to rescue his son whilst uncovering the truth about his family's murder.
Chapter 2 is below the cut!
Calling it ‘backstage’ would have been generous. The area where Alex sat was hidden by little more than a black sheet printed with the band’s logo, flung over the wooden beam above. His mother had arranged it through her business; the factory-made fabric had been imported from Vailberg, along with the T-shirts Eira had ordered for what small fan base existed outside of their classmates.
It was an uncharacteristically hot summer, and the field of yellowed grass at the edge of town was not benefitting from the swarm of final year students that had descended upon it. Alex’s clammy T-shirt clung uncomfortably to his tan skin, the usual waves of his dark hair flattened by sweat. He licked his chapped lips and reached for his magic, intending to at least dry off his clothes, but then thought better of it. It wouldn’t cost a lot but he didn’t want to risk the over-exertion, not after dumping so much of his power into his generator that morning.
Colourful lights flickered above as the heavy bass resumed, bright enough against the darkening sky to be visible through the cloth, but Eira was too skilled for him to sense any radiating magic. It hurt to miss the display. Watching countless practices hadn’t dulled any of the splendour of her routine, but as the band’s unofficial technician, he needed to be here.
Alex crouched down, ignoring the dry grass spiking his knees, and put a hand on his machine. It could almost pass for a guitar amp — a metallic box with a panel of buttons and wires running out of it towards the stage. The cool metal hummed under his fingertips as the electric generator whirred inside, but Alex explored the device with his magic instead, probing the passive spell he had cast there. The spell within the machine enabled the turbine to move, and Alex was disappointed to find its power running low. Even with all the magic he had stored inside it, the generator could only run for around three hours. Still, his framework of instruction was holding and should produce enough electricity to power the various amps and lights for one more song.
It was perhaps an indication of his inexperience that he could sense the generator’s passive spell so readily. A more focussed will as he formed the spell would have meant less waste energy as it ran — less radiation for his senses to pick up. Alex knew the generator shouldn’t have required as much magic as it did. His father could have done better.
With a sigh, he pulled a crumpled envelope from the back pocket of his jeans. It was still sealed, and his eyes passed over his name without reading it, drawn instead towards the logo printed in the top left corner.
Aedemeer City University. The letter had come from the capital that morning. It was the best place in Ardveld to study engineering, almost on par with the great universities in Vailberg. That’s if he’d made it in.
A sputtering from the machine behind him broke through his rumination. Shoving the letter back into his pocket, he spun around, sucking air through his teeth in frustration. The spell was dying. It took only a thought for Alex to draw on his magic. The passive spell within the generator glowed in his mind, accepting the gush of his remaining power. He wasn’t sure how much it would need; there must be less than a minute of show time left. But the electric lights, the speakers… Alex cut his connection with the spell and hoped for the best.
Reality replaced the feeling of magic, sharp and loud, as though he had emerged from deep water. His ears rang over the sound of the music, and Alex couldn’t separate the thumping of the bass from the beating of his heart. Black dots danced across his vision when he tried to stand, and he sunk down into the dirt as quickly as he had risen, trying to quell the shaking in his limbs.
Deep breaths usually helped to soothe away the dizzy sensation of magic over-exertion. He leant against the metal casing of the generator and closed his eyes.
A cheer from the crowd startled him back to consciousness. Blinking, Alex saw letters shining in colourful sparks across the velvet sky, but it took a moment for him to realise they were backwards, clearly directed at those looking at the stage: Thank you and goodnight! Alex groaned as he forced himself to sit up straight. His right shoulder ached where he had been leaning against the hard surface, and he rubbed at it while summoning the strength to stand. His generator had stopped its whirring, and he didn’t need to check to know that his passive spell had expired along with it. Stupid, really. If he’d bothered to add a fail-safe loop, he wouldn’t have to recast the framework. Again.
In the absence of the meagre light the electric lamps had provided, Alex saw the bobbing glow of magelights rising from the crowd, brightening the paths out of the field and illuminating those bothering to clean up. Wincing, he rotated his shoulder and pushed himself to his feet, leaning on the machine for support. This time, his vision mercifully stayed clear.
A rustle of fabric told him someone was approaching.
“Alex?” The dark blonde of Eira’s hair was hidden as usual by one of her illusions, this time cycling through a rainbow of colours that cast a hypnotic glow over her pale face in the fading light. Like the magelights he’d seen earlier, it was an active spell, requiring constant focus even if it didn’t use much power. If it was distracting her, Alex couldn’t tell.
“Is it all right to unplug the stuff now? We’re packing up.”
“Sure.” Alex bent down and started pulling the wire connectors out of the generator, hoping the movement would disguise the weakness he felt.
“You had to shut it off in the end then? I thought you’d leave the lights on at least,” Eira said as she wound the cables up. Alex passed her another, but this time she paused as she took it. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, fine!” Alex shook his head and immediately regretted it, trying to blink away the woozy sensation that had rushed back.
To his relief, Eira didn’t seem to notice. “You’ve been quiet all day.” She hesitated, then placed her hand on his shoulder. “Did you hear yet? About Aedemeer?”
“Oh.” Alex’s thoughts jumped to the crumpled paper in his pocket.
“Sort of. Well… I mean, I got a letter. Here.” Standing up straight, he pulled the envelope from his pocket and held it out.
Eira just looked at him. “You haven’t opened it?”
He shrugged, not meeting her eyes.
“Want me to do it?”
“I guess someone’s got to.”
His weak smile faded under Eira’s scrutinising gaze. Then she took the letter, slid a thumb under the flap of the envelope, and tore it open. Alex watched her face out of the corner of his vision, trying not to guess from her expression what she was reading.
“Hmmm. Interesting.” He made a grab for the paper, but the wooziness from his magic exhaustion made him slow, and she danced back, laughing. “I thought you wanted me to tell you!”
“Hurry up then!” He grinned. Eira wouldn’t tease him if it was bad news.
Her own suppressed smile broke wide across her face. “You got in!” She pushed the letter into his hand, sweeping him into a hug that almost knocked him off his feet. “You’ve got to let me be there when you tell your mum. I bet she’s gonna cry.”
“Happy tears, I hope!” Alex replied. The thought of how proud she’d be almost felt better than knowing he’d been accepted.
“You’re still coming to the pub, right? We should head back to yours afterwards. Maybe just stay for one drink, then get going. I can’t believe you had the letter on you all day and didn’t open it!”
Alex listened contentedly to Eira’s excited rambling as she collected up the last wire. “You said your dad’s got a mobile phone, right? Wanna use mine to call him? Tell him the good news?”
The question broke him from his happy daze. “I—” Alex hesitated before continuing quickly. “I mean, he’s coming down at the weekend. For my birthday. We’ll tell him then.”
“Well, I guess you can do a double celebration.” Eira’s careful response told him she hadn’t missed his deliberate avoidance. She pulled him into another hug, the fruity smell of her clothes reminding him how much he needed a shower. “You should be really proud.”
“Thanks.” Now that the excitement was wearing off, Alex realised how exhausted he was. He reached for the strap to lug the generator over his shoulder, but found his limbs shaking as he attempted to lift it. “How about you? Did you get anything from Beiriant?”
Eira flinched, and for a moment he wondered if he’d said something wrong. Then she reached across him, laying a hand on his machine.
“The spell… You didn’t— Alex, I knew you weren’t okay. Do you think I can’t spot when you’re magic sick? Why didn’t you just let it die? Or ask someone for help?”
“I’m fine, really,” Alex replied. “And I didn’t have time to ask anyone — it only needed another minute. Anyway, I sat down for a bit afterwards and now I’m good.”
“You don’t look it,” Eira said. “Let’s get you home. You should rest.” She gently tugged the strap from Alex’s hand, but he snatched at it.
“I can carry it!”
“Yeah, if you want us to take half the night.” She laughed. “I know it’s your baby. Trust me, I’ll be very careful.”
Alex frowned but stepped back, allowing her to hoist the generator off the ground, strap over her shoulder and both hands on the handle that stuck out from the top as she leant away from the weight. Together, they shuffled down the path from the field, Eira’s magelight ahead of them. The few stragglers that remained waved as they passed, and Alex focussed on standing as straight as possible to hide his weakness.
“They can’t tell, you know,” Eira whispered beside him. “It doesn’t matter, anyway.”
“What about the pub?” Alex asked suddenly. “You wanted to go. And Karla’s going to be there, right?” He might not be able to manage drinks tonight, but Eira shouldn’t have to miss out because of him.
“There’ll be other nights.” She took one hand off the generator to punch his arm, earning a disgruntled oof in return. “Hopefully the guilt will stop you pulling this again.”
“It’ll probably be the last night out for a while, though…” He appreciated Eira’s words, but most of their peers would leave for a career soon, the rest heading off to university. Either way, it meant a long time until another event like this. That’s if the field was even here when he came back. He’d heard it had been bought up, likely by one of those rich guys from Vailberg his mum was always complaining about. After so long dreaming of leaving, Alex was surprised by how sad the thought made him.
“Your health is more important than any night out. You need to rest.”
As much as he hated to admit it, Eira was probably right. He didn’t want anyone to see him like this. At least if he slept in tomorrow, he’d be back to normal by the time his father arrived.

Crown of Leaves
Ashley Freund x Ashlyn Halperin
Part two of Big Gulp, enjoy.
The Phoenix Tanning Salon smells of Body Lotion, Goggles coated in flammable alcohol.
Ashley and Ashlyn walk into the room, opening and shutting the door. Ashlyn removes her coat and hangs it up, putting her bag on the coat rack. The weight of the bag was too much for the coat rack. It started to tip over. Ashlyn then puts it on the bottom to stabilize it. Ashley walks to the other side of the room to start the beds; The lights flicker on as the fan blows; Ashley taps the control panel and sets the timer for Fifteen Minutes. “Dude, he said no drinks; if you spill that shit, we’re gonna have to clean it up like last time,” Ashlyn says as Ashley picks up the Tanning Bed cared; Ashley taunts her by drinking from it and shakes the cup, “Happy Bitch, there’s nothing to spill.” she then puts the Big Gulp on the desk between the two beds. Beneath the desk was an electrical box; it was gray and empty for the most part, but big thick cables ran from it, which led into the wall socket and out of it to the beds. An LCD buck booster read. “Warning–This device should never exceed 250 VAC.”
Ashley moved back to the coat rack before sitting her jacket on it, Ashlyn behind her, and moved to the electric thermostat ducking over the plastic palm tree. “Dude, why does Yuri keep it so cold in here?” she said, “Maybe it’s cold for the machines or whatever,” Ashley responded as she dug for her phone, seeing Wendy hadn’t called. Ashlyn sighed, “A few degrees won’t hurt….” she said before pushing the thermostat from a Seventy to a Seventy-Three. Ashley had already started taking off her shirt, but her action was interrupted when Ashlyn whined, “Shit! I forgot my iPod,” She and Ashley regularly take turns using iPods, but today she forgot hers at home. “Ugh, Sucks bitch, I mean! They have CDs!” Ashley said as she closed her Tanning Bed lid and latched onto the board above her bed, standing on her tippy-toes. “Ugh…” she scoffs in disgust, “Celion? Britney? Are we like the only cool people that come here or what?” Ashlyn zipped down her denim skirt and stopped. “Yeah,” she said before continuing. Ashley put weight onto the board; The shelf dropped to a quarter as the anchor screws drilled into the L brace holding the frame were ripped a little from the drywall; Ashley grabbed the last CD. “Greatest Hits from the Seventies–Have a Nice Decade!” she looks at it momentarily, “Whatever,” she says as she lets go of the board, making it wiggle out of the wall more.
Rain pours down on Yuri as he argues with Tanya; he kicks the wall in frustration. Yuri heads inside, removing the crushed Coke can and replacing it with Tan Lotion, which says, “Dying for a New Tan!” The door shifts before slamming down on the Lotion, making the lid make a POP sound as lotion spills over the alley; Ashley slides the CD into the player before sitting on her bed, unhooking her bra, and tossing it aside; Ashlyn looks at her and makes a questioning face, “Why are you wearing underwear? Ashley smiles, “Steinmeintz gets off on Tan lines.” she smiles, “Whatever….” Ashlyn responds and smiles before putting her goggles on; both girls pull the lids down, letting the blue lights take over. The door flattens the Tanning Lotion; white cream oozes out before the backdoor finally locks. Yuri is too distracted to notice it; the Irony of it all is that Tanya is the only girl who has given Yuri a chance. However, she was remarkably jealous, thinking he had a whole block of girls waiting.
“Hey Wen, Camera’s ready?” Wendy turned to see Julie standing in a pink floral knee-length dress, “U-Um, just a second!” Wendy stammered out, looking at her sister and the computer. Julie crossed her arms and paced around the hallway, “Y’know… Amber and Perry are about to pull up.” Julie’s tone was annoyed, “How about I take it tomorrow? When you’re not busy.” Julie said as she stopped and walked into Wendy’s room, “O-Oh… Okay, Thank you, Julie….” Wendy says as she turns around, meeting Julie’s smile, “Shit, they’re here… Listen, I’ll see you tonight.” she says as she turns on her heels and walks out of the room. Wendy flinched as the front door slammed shut. Wendy flipped through the photos until she came upon Ashley and Ashlyn’s, their mouths wide open with glee while they held onto a colossal palm tree inflatable that Ashley had just won at one of those cheap water gun games. However, Wendy felt off; something was off… The light flare is exposed; orange filters over the two girls laughing, washing them in a fiery orange glow. She chewed at her lip; She knew they had invited her to the Tanning Salon and that Ashley had given her cellphone number. Where did she place it? Oh, in the trash bin next to her, of course. Wendy got on her knees and dug through the container, but her lamp light flickered, distracting her; she finally pulled the number out and frantically searched for her phone.
Ashley and Ashlyn groove in their tanning beds as the opening scream of “Love Rollercoaster” nosedives into the funky, groovy bass line. On the desk between the two beds stood the Big Gulp cup, full of ice. Beads of condensation covered the cup, pooling around the base and forming a small puddle; a large bead rolled down the cup and fell into the reservoir, breaking it into small arms; the most extended arm rolled down the desk into the edge of the table where it met the wall. The trail pooled briefly before slipping between the desk and the wall, dripping into the empty gray buck booster box. The box hummed before white sparks flew from underneath it, spraying sparks everywhere. It stopped. The tanning beds started to heat up, and the fans kicked in, blowing hot air out of the beds. The room heated up. The LCD of the thermostat had already begun to climb, Seventy-Three, Seventy-Four, Seventy-Five, Seventy-Six, Seventy-Seven. More water fell from the cup into the Buck Booster; a loud bang and more sparks flew from the box. The Red LCD in front of the Buck Booster flickered before winking out for a second; a shadow over the walls traveled before it flashed back on. The numbers started going up– 240 VAC, then 245 VAC.
The air conditioning finally kicked in; The coat rack swung from side to side before eventually losing its balance; the top of the coat rack hit the plastic palm tree. The plastic tree hit the wall, the crown of leaves hitting the wooden board filled with CDs and hand towels. The L brace gave out, the board ripping from the drywall and landing on Ashley’s tanning bed. Ashlyn began to get uncomfortable. Finally, the beads of sweat on her forehead and breast made her anxious, “It’s a little too warm in here now, huh?” Ashlyn asked Ashley, who took out her earbuds, “Huh?” she asked; Ashlyn, uncomfortable, started to move her legs, “I fucked up. I set it too hot in here.” From the fallen bag rang Ashley’s phone, with it reading ‘INCOMING CALL–WENDY’ Wendy on the other line, anxious, biting her nails, the ringing stopped, “Hello!” said Ashley; Wendy sighed in relief, “Hey Ashley, It’s Wendy.” Wendy heard Ashley snickering and whispering to Ashlyn to stop before… “SIKE! Leave a message!” Wendy sighed as she slumped in her chair, “U-Um... Hey, this is Wendy; just call me when you’re done… I’m sorry I was too late.” Wendy hung up, but as she put the phone down on her desk, her lamp exploded, white sparks and glass flying everywhere. She turns around, facing the fiery glow overpowering the two girls.
Ashley lifted the bed lid, but as Ashley’s cover rose, the CD board slid off the top of her bed, twisting as it fell into the L brace of the bed, the bottom of the CD board banging against Ashlyn’s bed. Ashlyn pushed her lid, slowly opening it; the bottom of the board slowly slid into the bottom half of the L brace. The girls lifted their lids with no avail, Ashlyn burning the palms of her hands, “Ow!” she said as she tried again; Ashley tried, but the board latched onto the L brace and stopped her; Ashlyn let out a high-pitched scream. Panic arose as Ashlyn attempted to stop the fan from blowing hard, only making a grinding noise and cutting her fingers. The temperature rose from 245 VAC to 300 VAC to 325 VAC. Ashley pounded her feet against the wooden board covering the other end of the bed. She screamed as the top of the bed started to crack; the VAC rose to 355 VAC, which made them shatter, cutting her skin while Ashlyn’s skin began to get brownish as sweat dripped from her body. Still in the alley on the phone, Yuri looked up, and the scream came again; Yuri rolled his eyes before hanging up. Yuri walked to the backdoor, pushing it to no avail; he sighed, jogging to the front of the Salon. He grabbed the handle and twisted it; The door was locked, and he looked at the paper loosely hanging from it, “Be Back in Thirty. ♡” Yuri went to his back pocket for his keys, but his keys weren’t there. He looked through the door, “Hey, Open Up!” he yelled.
Ashley slid up to the top of the bed, slamming against the in-built fan. Ashlyn protected her face from the heat, using her arm to shield her. The girls kicked on the bed lids, but Ashlyn started to jerk and scream louder; the plastic goggles were melting. Ashlyn’s front bulbs began to crack while Ashley tried to find a way out, slamming the lid up and down, hoping the top would open. “GET ME OUT!” Ashley screamed as she started to slam the cover-up and down faster; the bottom bulbs were beginning to crack under pressure; the VAC rose again, resulting in the bulbs shattering. Ashley fell into the base of the bed with sparks flying and glass cutting the bottom of her body. Ashlyn screams with her goggles melted into her skin as her bed finally shatters; bulbs inside the bed split, which incinerates the girl, and with the VAC climbing higher, Ashley’s bed short-circuits and lights her ablaze, clawing at her skin; Ashley looks out of her bed with Ashlyn screaming in agony. They would have called to each other, proclaimed their undying love for each other, and forgiven each other for every catty comment they made over the years. Still, the bulbs shattering like firecrackers on the fourth overpowered them; they were beyond words now. They could only scream.

Universal Technology
Thermal Control
Not all Ptithians are built to survive the heat of the desert or the cold of the tundra, but many different species reside in Stilted and Howland, arguably the hottest and coldest settlements in the world. Ptithians living anywhere they want is thanks to thermal runes and thermal enchantments. Thermal enchantments can be applied to any object or piece of clothing, but runes are the most common. Items enchanted with thermal control can manipulate its heat and cold output. It can warm a room or cool it down, keep a Ptithian warm or cool them down, etc.
Thermal enchantments create efficient replacements to machines that resemble ovens, roasters, fridges (iceboxes), and clothing dryers.
More information below:
Control Panels
Developed originally in Nox to help handle multiple buttons, levers, and small mathematical computations, control panels are a simple method involving aura-energy wiring to create intended outputs. Aura can function just like electricity and can carry information, however, aura is dangerous when forcefully contained. A common feature in complex machinery, not so much in smaller technology because aura is typically "intelligent" enough to know where to go in smaller systems.
Global Positioning System
The planet has a magnetic field, so compasses are the classic way of navigating the globe.
A more useful geospatial technology was developed as Ptithians advanced their understanding in arcanology and geography. The Global-Streak Detector (GSD) is a small device programmed to detect sources of aura. The strongest natural sources of aura are from the global-streaks, essentially the jetstreams of aura flowing through the planet. The GSD detects these, finds the distance it is from the three central points in the global-streaks, and calculates the user's location on the planet.
A large-scale GSD is used in space. Instead of finding global-streaks, it finds the base output of stars and planets and calculates the distance from it to said aura output.
Sun flares, lindosts, Architects, and aura-storms can throw the GSD off and even put it out of commission depending on the size of the device. The larger spaceship GSDs are the most sensitive.
Energy Production
Aura is energy. Aura comes from stars and cycles through the universe and planets. Aura can be extracted from its invisible, senseless form and concentrated into something that can be manipulated. Any shape is possible, from orbs, thin layers, cubes, etc. The most common is an aura-capsule. These have been used for many, many years, especially among entities with a much higher power than Ptithians, such as lindosts. Capsules can hold information and have been found in ancient archives with stories and historical data. Eventually, Ptithians managed to learn how to use aura-capsules and have extracted the lost information and have used the stored energy for many new uses. Similar to batteries, except aura is naturally clean and will replace itself once removed from a concentrated state, leaving no pollution and is simply resealed again. Aura is infinite.
When in a condensed liquid state for storage such as capsules, aura is not safe to drink and can immediately cause lethal overexposure if ingested. However, lindosts have developed their own methods of creating drink-able aura. Ptithians are able to drink the custom creation, but it tastes like saltwater. Aura always tastes like saltwater.
Aura energy is managed at hubs. These hubs use ley lines of the Global Aura to connect to runic surge boxes across cities and towns. Houses on the outskirts with electricity have their own runic surges, while houses in communities have shared ones.
The runic surge boxes are susceptible to damage. High energy spells are not allowed within a certain radius of the boxes and even farther from hubs. If either are damaged, the aura electricity can go out.
Water Purification and Trash Disposal
By far, the biggest contribution aquamancy as a magic has made is the widespread ability to purify water quickly and easily. High aura spell casters talented in water control have made plenty of machines designed to install across cities and towns that can clean enough water for the population.
Magic is also critical to maintaining such a clean planet. Although all ptithians are naturally planet-conscious and care for their home and environment, trash will still exist. It is negated by particle displacement spells, which are much more taxing than most magics. The carbon materials are returned to the natural system and foreign particles are completely removed.
Sound Players
Aura can hold information, such as music and sounds. Similar to recorded wavelengths, many devices were used to take advantage of this. Shaped into a disk, it can be played on a gramophone. Gramophones never became popular outside of Nox, but new variations eventually left the islands. A smaller version without the horn, an electronic amplifier that reads the disk with a bark or bone needle. Turntables (vinyl players) spread across the globe.
Not only used for music, voices can also be recorded and saved. Whether it be discussions, personal notes, secretive recordings, etc, it can be saved and played later.
The sound read from the disks can be rooted far from the actual device and into multiple speakers. This allows for content to be broadcasted loudly even far away. Like an intercom blaring holiday music in a store.
Disks and cylindrical films are the most common storage method. Both can be constantly added onto, clipped, and written over.
Microphones
Microphones actually came before sound recording, as the construction involved for them was much simpler. They are small devices with a crystalline pit of concentrated aura inside a hull. It connects remotely to a speaker via aura energy and uplifts whatever sounds are fed into it.
Microphones and sound recording technology are easily intertwined.
Callrunes
Arguably the most useful piece of aura-technology developed, callrunes offer an array of uses. Bundled into a cube with sigils, it clicks open into different sizes with a watery screen made of an aura film. Enchanted with remote aura-energy connections, the callrunes can connect to other callrunes from any distance. Callrunes can both broadcast and receive signals, they can also use private or public connections. For example, a private connection for a call between two family members, whereas a public connection for a journalist broadcasting an event.
Callrunes have broadened the reach of news and allows any Ptithian to share their creative ideas. Podcasters talk about fun stories, artists stream their painting, reporters can broadcast real-time problems, and so much more.
Callrunes can also be programmed to display specific screens. Like presentation software.
Callrunes have also been combined with camera technology in more recent years, with the advantage of already being capable of recording video alongside its general photography.
Because of the ability to record and broadcast live video, a pseudo-television system naturally developed across the world. Callrune users were able to link their videos to their rune's frequency and could then have anyone else access it, allowing anyone to connect and watch.
Artists alike started using this system to create a new cinematic medium. Television shows, personal channels, movies, live streams, and more.
Cameras and Video Cameras
Imagery cameras are built the same as a regular camera and the current capture ratio is the equivalent to early 1990's (Earth) camera technology.
The pairing of camera and callrune technology ignited the conception of video cameras, which take the initial capability of a callrune and upgrade it into a more advanced piece of technology. Callrunes are capable of recording video, but their resolution is watery and its promise comes in connect-ability rather than quality. Thus, video cameras became the machine to produce high-quality videos that are used for movies and higher-budget network shows.
Rune Sigil Network
Callrune frequencies are powerful but have a downfall-- they are specific and typically only shared between coworkers, friends, and family. In order to create an interconnected shell where those hosting content and shows could actually receive viewers an easier and more streamlined process was needed.
Sigil loops were born. Sigil loops were a process built into much larger, more enchanted callrune-esce machines. The frequency of these specific runes were given out to everyone and dispersed as much as possible. Users of callrunes could then connect their own devices to these and "loop" their sigil frequency through it, easily giving it a custom name (like a domain name).
Once connected, a callrune had an access list to all the other frequencies looped through too. Connecting and tuning in was now smooth and custom names for channels made it simple for users to find what was where. Over time, these sigil loop lists were more and more customized and separated into categories similar to a channel service as more creators and shows made their place on the network.
With the advent of video and the sigil network, new types of jobs became available. Cinematographers, actors, directors, and various jobs required to make movies. Similar jobs and hosts for television shows too.
The network is nothing like a modern internet, nor does Ptitheros have internet culture. Movies and television shows match what would be on television channels in the 70-80s, as there is no *animation nor high-quality visual effects technology. And videos hosted by regular Ptithians is somewhat-similar to early Youtube: home videos, silly skits, homemade television shows, opinion vlogs.
Some channel examples include the equivalent of news reports, comedy shows, musical concerts, ghost/monster hunting, guard (police) shows, nature documentaries, location tours, bachelor/bachelorette, true crime, etc. Along with that, all the typical movie genres can be found too.
