November 2023 Sweden
The cold air nipped at my nose as I stood still in front of the gate leading to the home.Â
My feet shifted in the snow with a crunch. My hands shook, from nerves, as I move to cover my chest more to protect her from the cold. The home in front of me was familiar yet so new to me.Â
I look down at the door to the once loose gate.
âHuhâŠshe did end up remembering how to fix the gateâ I thought.

February 2018, Utah
The bags of groceries hit the counter top with a thud as I yelled toward Katrina, who remained struggling to lock the front door.
âYou know this wasnât what I had planned for us for Valentineâs Day you knowâŠbut hey we can celebrate you finally joining me here!âÂ
The smile on my face remained as I started unpacking the groceries.
Katrina moved through the maze of boxes that littered her apartment before stopping to look into one.
âYeah unpacking as much as possible and then dinnerâŠhas the announcement already been posted?â she started removing framed photos from the box.
I nod and follow with, âYup, they shot down my suggestion for the captionâŠâKatrina âMiniâ Gorry to join Utah Royals FC to join her amazingly charming and beautiful partner, y/n l/nâÂ
My hand gestures exaggerating the sentence to get a laugh from Katrina as I carried on.
âPlus, this absolutely beats just a Facetime call date so I donât mind doing this with you, cariño (dear)âÂ
Katrina puts down the photo frame of us together when we won the NWSL championship with FC Kansas City and heads to the kitchen and leans on the counter.
âI meant to ask, howâs your sister doing? She doinâ alright?â the question gently leaving her mouth as if preparing for any sort of bad news.
I snort, âMariana is doing great, surprisingly. Sheâs back in Mexico and just taking some time off. She met someone and it seems like itâs going well. She said âhiâ by the wayâ.Â
My little sister, Mariana, played for the Houston Dash until she had sustained an injury that completely took her out of the sport the last year. Her body was not responding to the treatments or physical therapy and, ultimately, she decided to retire. Mariana elected to go live in Mexico and stay with our grand parents now that she âhad all the time in the world for the first time in her lifeâ.Â
Katrina looks at me confused but shakes it away, âYour sister is really something, toughest girl Iâve ever metâ.
I laugh, âYeah and me the complete opposite, which is why you are the bug killer in this relationshipâ. I say talking out the vegetables from the bag and placing it amongst the rest.Â
With a shrug Katrina said, âWell, you pay me back in fixing things around the places Iâve lived inâŠby the way can you do me a favor? I, may have made the latch loose on backyard gateâŠagainâŠcan you tell me how to fix itâŠagain?â
My eyes meet hers as I feign frustrationâŠâCariño, youâre going to have to remember because what if it breaksâŠagain and Im not around. I donât want creeps coming into your backyard because you canât fix itâŠjust this once Iâll do it for you okâ.Â
I sigh and leave the groceries on the dinner table and head out the back but not before I lean down and give her a quick kiss on the lipsâŠâGod, what would you do without me?â I joke.

The gate quietly locks behind me with a click. I feel a stir under the rebozo (thick shawl) on my chest, I gently caress the top of her head through the shawl and the movement stops. I lift the top of the rebozo and see that she did remain asleep.Â
I smile softly down and whisper. âSheâll be so excited to meet youâ.
I look back at the house and see the lights on within giving off a warm glow. I begin walking and look over at the, now, empty, painted pots that line the wall underneath the window.Â
I frown a bit, âdamn, guess the roses didnât make it did they?â I thought.Â
As I continued closer to the door I notice several more âartisticâ looking pots with doodles and little Hâs adorning each and every one of them.Â
A smile returned to my face as the memory came back to me.

February 2020, Norway
The sun peaked through the clouds as Katrina and I sat looking outside the window of her home in Norway. A small heater directed at me as I meticulously continued to paint a medium sized pot.Â
I hadnât noticed that Katrina had stopped painting her own and just watched me as I seemed lost in what I was doing. My tongue sticking out of the side of my mouth as my attention was fully on the project in front of me.
âYou not worried about getting paint on your ring, darling?â she said gesturing her paintbrush towards my left hand.
I finish up one little detail on the sun that I had just painted before I looked over to the ring in question.
âOh shitâŠtotally forgot to take it off.â my hands wiping off any paint before delicately taking off the ring from my finger and handing it to Katrina.
âHold it for me?â I quietly ask before she silently takes the ring and places in her front pocket joining hers.Â
Katrina caught my attention before I could find myself back to painting the pot in front of me.
âHowâs Mariana doing?â the tone still careful.
I nod, âUh she is pregnant actually, set to get married soon. She said that she wasnât going to have a big thing and just get married at the courthouseâŠsheâs still sad she couldn't make it out to our wedding last Fall â
Katrinaâs eyes widen at the mention of pregnancy, âOh sheâs pregnant? Congratulations to her thenâŠcan I ask?â. I notice that she starts to fiddle with her paintbrush as I continued painting with mine.
âWhatâs on your mind cariño?â my attention fully on her as she sighs softly.
She puts down her brush and takes one of my hands in hers.Â
âRemember when talked about kids?...I know that you didnât want to carry because of fear and I said I would be happy to just only when I feel ready toâŠ(y/n), Iâve been thinking and I think Iâm ready to do it, thereâs a lot of support with IVF here in Norway and Iâve done the research because I know that you worry and-â she stops once I squeeze her hand. She hadnât noticed that my eyes were already filled with tears.Â
âCariño, there is absolutely nothing I would want more. I will try to be there for you as much as I can even if it means taking time off with Chelseaâ I say now holding her hands tightly in mine.
Katrina, immediately, shakes her head, âhey you have been dreaming of playing for Chelsea since you were youngâŠI canât ask for you to leave in your first season with themâ.Â
I laugh a little as I clean my eyes and nose with a leftover napkin âfine you winâŠwell I should buy more pots when our kid is around I want to make sure they have one too.â
We had started our lives together and we were making the step to make it bigger. I had intended, no matter how much money it was going to cost me, to fly to Norway on my free weekends to see Katrina through her pregnancy.Â
However, COVID completely shut me off and away from Katrina. Through facetimes filled with my constant worrying of her getting sick while she was pregnant were frequent but not enough to sustain me.Â
I had only seen her once or twice after following the strict travel restrictions and I was nothing but elated.Â
Katrina had asked how my sister was doing. I had shared with her that Mariana delivered a healthy baby girl, Corey. However, the news did not carry the same lightness as before, the father of the child had left Mariana before Corey was born.
Disregarding Katrinaâs protests, I took a bit of time off with Chelsea to just be with her when she finally gave birth to our little Harper. Mariana, joined me in crying over our little addition to the family telling Katrina that âCorey, canât wait to meet herâ.Â
Katrina would go to the Brisbane Roar for a time, while I remained in England. Katrina and I were experts in the aspects of a long distance relationship, that didnât stop my heart from aching from not seeing Harper. Mariana would fill in those gaps as she would send video after video of her and Corey. Katrina would also fill my phone with pictures of our little HarperâŠ
I wish I could just live in that moment again when my only worry was when would be the time I would see either of them.
______________________________________________________________
As I moved quietly to the front door, I stopped myself from knocking. I couldnât just yetâŠI missed Katrina and I knew she missed me but it had been so long since I had seen her. I plopped down on the steps away from the door.Â
I pulled Corey closer to me, and she, in turn, buried herself even more into my chestâŠI just needed a moment to myself. I was early so Katrina wouldnât be expecting me and plus I was hidden away from the windows; away from any curious eyes.
My breath came out white as I sighed looking towards the gate in front of me. The last time I was here I was leavingâŠleaving for Mexico as soon as I heard the news. Chelsea received a rushed email stating that I would be unavailable until further notice and Katrina saw me frantically packing.
I, absentmindly, started to play with my ring finger always forgetting that there was no ring there to play with. Katrina should have been madder at me then.

February 2022, Sweden
The soft glow of my phone filled the room before the default ringtone woke me up. I carefully reached over trying not to move Katrina as much as she was asleep against my chest. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes I look and see my grandmother was on the other line.Â
My grandmother never called without notice opting to only call when she knew that I would be awake. I answer and interrupt her before she starts asking her to just give me a minute in as soft of whisper I could muster.
I quietly leave Katrinaâs side, walk by Harperâs bed by our and into the corridor. A yawn escapes me as I finally prompt my abuela to continue with what she was calling about.
âAh mi niña, tu hermana esta muy mala, le encontramos en el piso desmayada y quieria avisar le,creo que tu necesitas a venir a vistar laâŠno sabemos cuanto le faltaâ (Ah, my daughter, your sister is not doing well, we found her passed out and we wanted to let you know, I think that you need to come and visit her, we donât know how much time she has left).Â
I do not remember what I responded but it must have been something akin to âIâm headed there nowâ as I immediately went to my laptop and bought the first ticket there. I moved through our home with complete disregard of the noise I was making at 3:30 am nor I didnât know I was crying until I felt Katrinaâs arms around me, calmly, saying my name to bring me out of my panicked state.Â
The clothes still bunched up in my hands as I broke down. âItâs Marianaâ was all I could hiccup. Katrina rubbing my back as she led me out of the room to not wake Harper.Â
âHow is Mariana?â she whispered the careful tone still there.Â
I shook my head as I continued, âsheâs dying, I have to go to see herâŠI canât be hereâŠI-â I start breathing slowly to calm my self as Katrina held me, I hadnât even noticed that we were sat on the ground, her hand running up and down my back.
She smiles and nods as she herself tries to keep the tears from falling, âYou go, I will be ok with Harper here, I know how much Mariana means to youâŠshe means a lot to me too. Go take care of herâŠjust know that I will be here for you and I⊠I still love you, even after all of this timeâŠall the times we have been apartâŠI love you. Mariana is lucky to have you as an older sister as I am to have you as my wifeâ

November 2023, Sweden
I was gone more than a year, Mariana had passed a month after I had arrived in our parentâs small home town. My parents, estranged, would not be there. Definitely not for the daughter they thought would defend their homophobia when I came out to them but defended me fiercely to her last breath.
I handled everything from the funeral, looking after my grandparents and the caring of little Corey. I watched the world cup from the bar counter of little restaurant on the corner. Bouncing Corey on me knee as I watched my wife make history.Â
Katrina kept my ring safe with her, I do not trust my aunts at all especially after the fall out I had with my mother. The final check off of my list was preparing for the adoption of Corey. Once she was, in all eyes of the law, my own daughter we said our goodbyes and headed back to Sweden...back to Katrina and HarperâŠback home.
I sighed as I rubbed my eyes when the cold breeze hit me. The door behind me opened and enveloped me in a warm glow. It took me a few moments to register Katrinaâs arms around my neck as she nuzzled her way into hair whispering, âWelcome homeâ.
I leaned back into her still holding Corey ahead of me as I then heard the pitter patter of little feet and a little âMamaâ was heard as another weight was added on my back.
I laughed for the first time in a while, âHey you two, careful donât want to crush Harperâs new big sisterâ I say getting up.Â
The sleeping bundle now with open eyes was let loose and with renewed energy hugged Harper and ran into the home pulling her in to play leaving me with Katrina.Â
She grabbed me and kissed me like it was the first time and grabbed my hand as we separated.Â
âI think this belongs to you, darlingâ She said slipping the wedding ring onto my finger as I clasped her hand once she did.Â
I bring her in close, âof course it doesâŠI love you, cariñoâ her lips capturing mine.Â
Now two little voices came from within the home, âMama!â. We enter hand in hand with our new favorite little distractions.

In January 2020, Mexico made history as the first Latin American country to adopt a feminist foreign policy. Pioneered by Sweden six years earlier in 2014, feminist foreign policy (FFP) initially began as a niche effort in the Nordic region. For many years, Sweden stood alone on the global stage, emphasizing that its FFP focused on enhancing womenâs ârights, resources, and representationâ in the countryâs diplomatic and development efforts worldwide. That effort was the result of the vision and leadership of Swedenâs foreign minister at the time, Margot Wallström, although there was widespread support for the policy across the government and it was continued by subsequent ministers.
It would be another three years before other nations followed suit: In 2017, Canada announced a Feminist International Assistance Policy. At the end of 2018, Luxembourgâs new coalition government committed to developing a FFP in their coalition agreement. And in 2019, Mexico and France pledged to co-host a major womenâs rights anniversary conference in 2021 while beginning to explore the development of feminist foreign policies simultaneously.
I had an inside view on that process having convened the existing FFP governments and numerous international experts just before Mexicoâs announcement. Together, we developed a global definition and framework for FFP. As I wrote for this magazine in January 2020, this approach was largely followed by the Mexican policy. The goals for Mexico in adopting an FFP were to increase the rights of women and LGBTQ+ individuals on the world stage, diversify their diplomatic corps, boost resourcing for gender equality issues, and ensure that internal policies within the foreign ministry aligned with this approach, including a zero-tolerance policy toward gender-based harassment.
Now, under the leadership of a new female foreign minister, Alicia BĂĄrcena, and following the election of Mexicoâs first woman president, Claudia Sheinbaum, I was excited to travel to Mexico City in July as it hit another milestone: becoming the first country outside Europe to host the annual ministerial-level conference on FFP. It was an opportunity for me to take stock of what Mexico has achieved since it adopted an FFP, and to see what progress it has made toward its goals.
Initially convened by Germanyâs Annalena Baerbock in 2022 and then by the Dutch last year, Mexico took a unique approach to the conference by focusing it on a specific policy issueâin this case, the forthcoming Summit of the Future. This conference, taking place at the U.N. General Assembly in September, aims to begin laying the groundwork for the successor goals to the Sustainable Development Goals framework. It is already a fraught and polarized process, and progressive leadership is sorely needed.
Last week provided clear evidence that Mexico is making progress in modeling that leadershipâincluding in consistently advocating for progressive language in often contentious international multilateral negotiations, such as the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP). For example, in its interventions at the latest COP, Mexico placed human rights, intersectionality and gender equity at the heart of climate action and recognized the role of women environmental defenders and Indigenous women in a just transition.
âMexico is often a lone voice in holding the line on critical human rights, Indigenous rights and gender equality language at the climate talks, even among the FFP countries,â said Bridget Burns, the executive director of the Womenâs Environment and Development Organization who has spent the last 15 years organizing womenâs rights activists in climate negotiations and attended the July conference to speak on the sustainable development panel.
Mexicoâs decision to link their hosting of the FFP Conference to the Summit of the Futureâas evidenced in an outcome document they published and are circulating for signature ahead of the General Assemblyâs high-level week in Septemberâchallenged FFP governments to engage a feminist approach in mainstream foreign policy dialogue, not just in gender-related discussions like the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women. âThe Summit of the Future aspires to a better tomorrow, but lofty goals wonât translate to real systemic change without feminist civil society,â said Sehnaz Kiymaz, senior coordinator of the Womenâs Major Group.
On the multilateral front, Mexico has shown leadership by co-chairing the Feminist Foreign Policy Plus Group (FFP+) at the UN, alongside Spain. This body held the first ministerial-level meeting on FFP at the General Assembly last year and adopted the worldâs first political declaration on FFP. Signed by 18 countries, governments pledged âto take feminist, intersectional and gender-transformative approaches to our foreign policies,â and outlined six areas for action in this regard. This was the first time FFP countries publicly pledged to work together as a group to address pressing global challenges through a feminist approach. While smaller subsets of this cohort have worked together multilaterally to condemn womenâs rights rollbacks in Afghanistan or in support of an international legal framework on the right to care and be cared for, the first big test of this more systematic approach will be the forthcoming Summit of the Future, where feminists have been advocating for gender to be referenced as a cross-cutting priority.
Mexico has also recently ratified two international instruments to directly benefit women: Convention 189 of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on domestic workers and Convention 190 of the ILO on violence and harassment in the workplace. Under the mantle of its FFP, Mexico has championed the importance of care work in the advancement of womenâs rights and countriesâ development at the U.N. Human Rights Council and at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean through the Global Alliance for Care Work.
While international womenâs rights activists at the conference largely gave positive feedback on Mexicoâs track record, the response from Mexican civil society was more critical. Activists organized a side event to present their more skeptical view of Mexican FFP. MarĂa Paulina Rivera ChĂĄvez, a member of the Mexican coalition and an organizer of the event, argued a conference could only go so far. âIt is fundamental to decenter the state, understanding that feminist foreign policies must be horizontal,â she said.
A major theme of that side event and of Mexican activistsâ interventions in the official ministerial conference was the incongruence of the Mexican governmentâs leadership on feminist approaches internationally while womenâs human rights at home have suffered. Such criticisms of the AndrĂ©s Manuel LĂłpez Obrador government are not unfounded. In one particularly troubling interview a few years ago, he suggested that Mexicoâs high rate of femicideâ11 women are murdered daily, with rates on the rise compared to other crimesâwas merely a false provocation by his political opponents. Negative biases against women are pervasive in Mexico, with 90 percent of the population holding such biases.
Mexico has made strides in improving gender equality in other areas, however. Women now make up half of the Mexican legislature and have been appointed to lead high-level institutions, such as the Supreme Court, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Central Bank, with cascading positive effects on gender equality. BĂĄrcena, for instance, clearly asserted from her first speech on the job that Mexicoâs FFP would remain a top priority. This is no accident. At the federal level, significant efforts have been made to enforce gender parity laws and implement more than 80 percent of the legal frameworks promoting, enforcing and monitoring gender equality as stipulated by international benchmarks. Mexican women have also seen some improvements in maternal mortality rates, access to internet services, and protections to the right to abortion, with numerous national commitments to improve gender equality, such as measures to alleviate the burden of care on women.
But while there has been an increase in the number of women in the legislature and government positions, women from Indigenous, Afro-descendent, and working-class backgrounds continue to be underrepresented in political roles. And there has been a steady increase over the last decade in femicides, disappearances and sexual violence which Mexican feminist organizations and international actors have found are directly linked to the militarization of law enforcement under the guise of Mexicoâs war on drugs and organized crime.
Additional criticisms of the Mexican FFP itself include the foreign ministryâs insularity and reluctance to engage with Mexican feminist activists in the development and implementation of its FFP. There was also a hesitation by the previous foreign ministry leadership to collaborate with Inmujeres, Mexicoâs gender ministry, preferring to keep control of the FFP within the foreign ministry alone. It is not uncommon for gender ministries to be excluded in foreign policymaking as they are often perceived as lacking the necessary expertise or authority on foreign policy. However, Inmujeres is an exception in this regard and the criticism was valid. This was on my mind as I participated in the conference last month, and straight out of the gate I could observe a clear departure from the past approach under BĂĄrcenaâs leadership: The foreign ministry officially partnered with Inmujeres to co-host the conference, and the heads of both agencies were equally prominent voices throughout the three-day event. Similarly, the foreign ministry also made efforts to engage Mexican feminist civil society in conference planning, inviting civil society to a consultation day in the weeks leading up to the conference.
Following the right-wing electoral successes and likely abandonment of FFP in countries like Sweden, Argentina, and potentially the Netherlands, the success of a Mexican model of FFP is all the more important. Mexican activists I spoke with expressed optimism about BĂĄrcenaâs leadership, which they had not extended to her predecessor. Certainly, there is some cynicism about whether Mexicoâs next president, a woman, will be any better on the issue of femicide than her mentor and predecessor, LĂłpez Obrador, but there is some room for hope. If the leadership of a female foreign minister like BĂĄrcena has been more effective in mobilizing political and convening power behind FFP, thereâs potential that Sheinbaum will also show more interest than her predecessor.
While Mexican civil society has critiqued that Sheinbaum did not present a plan on how she would continue and improve the countryâs FFP and repair the governmentâs relationship with feminist civil society, Sheinbaumâs planâentitled 100 Pasos Para La TransformaciĂłnâtakes a human rights-based approach to gender equality. This is promising, because political approaches, which are more common, tend to reduce the human rights of women, girls, and gender-diverse persons as a means to an end, such as better economic, education, or health outcomes. The plan proposes measures to alleviate the care burden on women, safeguard sexual and reproductive health and rights, protect LGBTQ+ communities, promote gender parity in cabinets, improve land rights for rural women, reduce femicides, and more.
That Sheinbaum has not explicitly addressed the importance of Mexicoâs FFP is not necessarily surprising. Most feminist and womenâs rights organizations are understandably more focused on issues within their own borders, and foreign policy rarely drives political power and the focus of the electorate. Discussion of feminist foreign policy is thus typically the domain of the foreign minister and in some cases other relevant ministersâsuch as international development in Germany, or the trade ministry in Sweden under its previous government. (Canadaâs Justin Trudeau stands out as a rare exception, having championed feminism and Canadaâs feminist approach to policymaking at the Group of Seven and international gender equality forums throughout his tenure as prime minister.)
But even without top-down leadership from a president, savvy officials within the Mexican foreign and gender ministries are using FFP to make progress. While there has not yet been a public accounting of the progress made in implementing FFP, the clear leadership Mexico is demonstrating on the world stage in key negotiations, its successful conference, and the anticipated new government set the stage for Mexico to boldly advance its FFP. It will serve as a valuable example to the world.

Michael Kosnar and Ryan J. Reilly at NBC News:
WASHINGTON â WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge this week as part of a plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department that will allow him to go free after having spent five years in a British prison, according to court documents. Assange was charged by criminal information â which typically signifies a plea deal â with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, the court documents say. A letter from Justice Department official Matthew McKenzie to U.S. District Judge Ramona Manglona of the Northern Mariana Islands District said that Assange would appear in court at 9 a.m. local time Wednesday (7 p.m. ET Tuesday) to plead guilty and that the Justice Department expects Assange will return to Australia, his country of citizenship, after the proceedings.
U.S. charges against Assange stem from one of the largest publications of classified information in American history, which took place during President Barack Obama's first term. Starting in late 2009, according to the government, Assange conspired with Chelsea Manning, a military intelligence analyst, to use his WikiLeaks website to disclose tens of thousands of activity reports about the war in Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of reports about the war in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of State Department cables and assessment briefs of detainees at the U.S. detention camp at Guantånamo Bay, Cuba.
Court documents revealing Assange's plea deal were filed Monday evening in U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean. Assange was expected to appear in that court and to be sentenced to 62 months, with credit for time served in British prison, meaning he would be free to return to Australia, where he was born. âThis was an independent decision made by the Department of Justice and there was no White House involvement in the plea deal decision,â National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement Monday evening.
Assange has been held in the high-security Belmarsh Prison on the outskirts of London for five years, and he previously spent seven years in self-exile at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London â where he reportedly fathered two children â until his asylum was withdrawn and he was forcibly carried out of the embassy and arrested in April 2019. A superseding indictment was returned more than five years ago, in May 2019, and a second superseding indictment was returned in June 2020.
Assange has been fighting extradition for more than a decade: first in connection with a sex crimes case in Sweden, then in connection with the case against him in the United States. In March, the High Court in London gave him permission for a full hearing on his appeal as he sought assurances that he could rely upon the First Amendment at a trial in the U.S. In May, two judges on the High Court said he could have a full hearing on whether he would be discriminated against in the U.S. because he is a foreign national. A hearing on the issue of Assange's free speech rights had been scheduled for July 9-10. WikiLeaks also published hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee that upended the 2016 presidential race. Russian intelligence officers were subsequently indicted in connection with the hacking in 2018 in a case brought by then-special counsel Robert Mueller. At a joint news conference with then-President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin days later, Trump contradicted the indictment and the intelligence community, saying Putin was "extremely strong and powerful in his denial" that Russians interfered in the 2016 election to help him win.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will return to Australia after he reached a plea deal with the US by pleading guilty.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, pressed by the opposition and members of his own coalition, claimed on Wednesday to be taking very seriously accusations of a âtroll farmâ, allegedly run by the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) on whom his majority depends, despite the party denying any illegal activity. Kristersson of the Moderate Party (MP) has taken seriously the information from TV4 that the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) party is running a so-called âtroll factoryâ. âThese are serious accusations, and I take the whole situation seriously,â he told TV4 Nyheterna. âEspecially when people and parties risk contributing to misinformation of various kinds. This applies regardless of who is behind it,â Kristersson said, adding that âAll parties must stay away from that.â On TV4âs âKalla Faktaâ programme, which aired earlier this week, SD politician Julian Kroon admitted that the party had hired around 10 people to act as âonline warriorsâ ahead of the 2018 general election. Their job, among other things, was to be visible on social media and âfight in comment sectionsâ. âYou could call it a troll factory,â Kroon told Kalla Faktaâs undercover reporter. All in all, the programme revealed that the SDâs communications department uses many anonymous accounts to spread social media content favourable to the far-right party.

Tornado devastates Texas Panhandle town, killing 3 and injuring dozens (AP) A tornado tore through the Texas Panhandle town of Perryton on Thursday, killing three people, injuring dozens more and causing widespread damage as another series of fierce storms carved its way through Southern states. First responders from surrounding towns and cities and from neighboring Oklahoma descended on the town, which is home to more than 8,000 people and about 115 miles (185 kilometers) northeast of Amarillo, just south of the Oklahoma line. Mobile homes were ripped apart and pickup trucks with shattered windshield were slammed against mounds of rubble in residential areas.
US purchases of Russian uranium (NYT) In 1993, in the pursuit of wrapping up the Cold War in a capitalist bow, Washington and Moscow inked a deal where the United States would buy and import the vast amount of Soviet weapons-grade uranium lying around the country, which would then be converted to nuclear fuel for power plants. This gave Americans cheap atoms to crack, Russians money, and the world some peace, but the side effect was that it pretty much wiped out the American uranium enrichment business. For decades, rather than invest in upgrading American centrifuges, the country just kept buying Russian uranium, which means that right now a third of enriched uranium used in the U.S. is imported from Russia, to the tune of around $1 billion a year. Naturally, this has posed a bit of a geopolitical pickle given the invasion of Ukraine and needed to stop, and the U.S. now needs to line up a new supply of enriched uranium, which will take years.
Mexico swelters as âatypicalâ heat wave grips nation (Reuters) Mexican authorities urged people across the country to take safety precautions on Thursday as an unusual late Spring heat wave sent temperatures soaring, with cooler days possibly weeks away. Health ministry data through June 9 shows that at least six people have died this year as a result of the higher-than-normal temperatures. âThe heat is intense!â said Abigail Lopez, a nurse in normally sunny but temperate Mexico City who said she was drinking more water and wearing lighter clothes to try to beat the heat. Mexicoâs national meteorological service forecast temperatures over 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) on Thursday in all of the countryâs 32 states, with highs at least 10 degrees hotter in 23 of them.
Scathing report finds Boris Johnson deliberately misled UK Parliament over âpartygateâ (AP) A committee of U.K. lawmakers harshly rebuked former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson Thursday, saying he lied to Parliament about lockdown-flouting parties and was complicit in a campaign to intimidate those investigating his conduct during the coronavirus pandemic. The release of the Commons committeeâs scathing 77-page report Thursday touched off an angry exchange of recriminations. Johnson repeated his claim that the panel was a âkangaroo courtâ bent on ousting him from Parliament. The committee said the defense he had provided was an after-the-fact justification and âno more than an artifice.â The report and reaction to it highlight the battle over Johnsonâs legacy as Britain prepares for elections that could radically alter social and economic policy in a nation struggling to overcome a cost-of-living crisis and complaints about government services ranging from healthcare to law enforcement.
Drought and rising heat bring unusual wildfire warnings in northern Europe (AP) Summer is wildfire season in southern Europe, but this year the continentâs north is also at risk, with forest fire warnings in effect across the Nordic and Baltic countries. A lack of rain and rising temperatures have led to dangerously dry conditions in the region, leading to worries of a repeat of the summer of 2018 when major wildfires swept across Sweden in particular. Small wildfires are already burning in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland and experts worry it could get much worse unless thereâs significant rainfall in coming weeks. Unlike the sun-soaked Mediterranean countries, which have to deal with wildfires every summer, the phenomenon is rare in the countries of northern Europe, where summers are normally cool and wet by comparison.
Russiaâs labor shortage (WSJ) The war in Ukraine has fueled Russiaâs worst labor crunch in decades after hundreds of thousands of workers fled the country or were sent to the front lines, weakening the foundations of an economy weighed down by sanctions and international isolation. Two waves of emigration last year, the largest since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the mobilization of around 300,000 men have exacerbated an already tight labor market plagued by long-term demographic decline. Russian businesses are short of everyone from programmers and engineers to welders and oil drillers, professions needed to boost the economy and support the war effort in Ukraine. To stem the tide, last month, President Vladimir Putin ordered officials to develop measures to reverse the population outflow.
Retaking Villages Leaves Ukrainian Troops Exposed and Diving for Cover (NYT) After months of preparation and bolstered by hundreds of Western-donated tanks, armored vehicles and howitzers, Kyiv has notched small successes in the first week and a half of a counteroffensive to drive Russian forces from southern Ukraine. In fierce fighting on the plains, the military said it had broken through a first line of Russian defenses and reclaimed seven villages. But with each step forward, its soldiers become more vulnerableâremoved from the safety of their own trenches, closer to Russian artillery, maneuvering through minefields and unprotected from airstrikes. âThey are attacking with rockets, howitzers, mortars, helicopters and drones,â Sgt. Serhiy Gubanov said in an interview while taking cover in a basement as explosions boomed outside. âItâs the complete collection of intense experiences,â he said.
Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy: Power disrupted, heavy rains lash India and Pakistan (Reuters) Roofs were blown off houses and trees and electric poles uprooted, leaving thousands without power as a severe cyclone made landfall and rain lashed both the Indian and Pakistani coasts early on Friday. At least two people died in India's western state of Gujarat after being swept away by flood waters just before the cyclone hit. More than 180,000 people were evacuated in India and Pakistan in the last few days as authorities braced for the cyclone, named Biparjoy, which means 'disaster' or 'calamity' in the Bengali language.
China seeks to expand its role in the Middle East (Financial Times) China has offered to mediate between rival Palestinian factions and facilitate peace talks with Israel, in the latest sign of Beijingâs intent to expand its diplomatic role in the Middle East. At a meeting between Chinese president Xi Jinping and the head of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas, in Beijing on Wednesday, the two leaders also said that they had signed a strategic partnership. Beijing has ramped up its political presence in the Middle East, hosting talks this year that led to the surprise resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Analysts say Beijing hopes to rival the US as a broker in the region, and replace Russiaâs waning influence.
Students meet under trees as schools shelter villagers displaced by Philippine volcano (AP) Nearly 20,000 people have fled from an erupting Philippine volcano and taken shelter in schools, disrupting education for thousands of students, many of whom are having classes in chapels and tents or under trees, officials said Friday. The Mayon volcano in northeastern Albay province, one of the deadliest of 24 active volcanoes across the Philippine archipelago, began expelling lava late Sunday in a gentle eruption that has not caused any injuries or death. But it could drag on for months and cause a prolonged humanitarian crisis, officials warned. Evacuees were directed to more than 20 emergency shelters, which are mostly grade and high school campuses. Every classroom has turned into an overcrowded sanctuary for several families with sleeping mats, bags of clothes, cooking stoves and toys for children. More than 17,000 students in five Albay towns are among affected by the displacements for the eruption. About 80% are continuing their daily school lessons through an emergency system in which parents teach their children at home or elsewhere using school-provided âlearning modules.â
Thousands of Sudanese fleeing fighting with no travel documents trapped on the border with Egypt (AP) When fighting in Sudan erupted in mid-April, Abdel-Rahman Sayyed and his family tried to hold out hiding in their home in the capital, Khartoum, as the sounds of explosions, gunfights and the roar of warplanes echoed across the city of 6 million people. They lived right by one of the fiercest front lines, near the militaryâs headquarters in central Khartoum, where the army and a rival paramilitary, the Rapid Support Forces, battled for control. Three days into the conflict, a shell hit their two-story home, reducing much of it to rubble. Luckily, Sayyed, his wife and three children survived, and they immediately fled the war-torn city. The problem was, their passports were buried under the wreckage of their home. Now they are among tens of thousands of people without travel documents trapped at the border with Egypt, unable to cross into Sudanâs northern neighbor. More than 120,000 Sudanese without travel documents are trapped in Wadi Halfa and surrounding areas, according to a Sudanese migration official.
An alien world with all the elements needed for life (Washington Post) Saturnâs moon Enceladus has enticed scientists for years with its plumes fizzing their way up from an ocean beneath a thick crust of ice. Now thereâs a new element to the story, literally: That cold, dark ocean appears to contain a form of phosphorus, an essential ingredient for life as we know it. That means Enceladus has the only ocean beyond Earth known to contain all six elements needed for life. The claimed discovery of dissolved sodium phosphate, announced in a report published Wednesday in the journal Nature, makes Enceladus all the more intriguing in the search for habitable worlds beyond Earth. The report is based on data from an instrument on board NASAâs Cassini spacecraft, which explored Saturn in its moons for 13 years before engineers sent it plunging into the gas giantâs atmosphere in 2017.
After only an hour (Science.org) Tech experts have been sounding the alarm that artificial intelligence (AI) could turn against humanity by taking over everything from business to warfare. Now, Kevin Esvelt is adding another worry: AI could help somebody with no science background and evil intentions design and order a virus capable of unleashing a pandemic. Mr. Esvelt, a biosecurity expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, recently asked students to create a dangerous virus with the help of ChatGPT or other so-called large language models, systems that can generate humanlike responses to broad questions based on vast training sets of internet data. After only an hour, the class came up with lists of candidate viruses, companies that could help synthesize the pathogensâ genetic code, and contract research companies that might put the pieces together.

Dental Implants Market Size To Reach $9.62 Billion By 2030
The global dental implants market size is expected to reach USD 9.62 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 9.8% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Rising demand for tooth replacement has provided good growth potential to the market. The increasing number of dental injuries owing to road accidents and sports injuries are some of the major factors boosting the market growth.
With growing aesthetic awareness, people are exploring more treatment options, which is leading to the growth of the market. For instance, as per the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry data, more than 95.0% of individuals across the globe believe that their smile is a vital social asset and nearly 84.0% revealed to be under increased pressure to perfect their smile, thus increasing the product demand. Dental implants are considered the only restorative technique that preserves and stimulates natural bone. Owing to the growing number of edentulous people, the demand for prosthetics is increasing, which is expected to be one of the major impact-rendering drivers for the market.
Several industries have halted their services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the dental care industry is greatly impacted by the significant decrease in elective procedures, many of which are being postponed or canceled so that hospitals can focus their resources on treating patients with COVID-19. Major Countries like the U.S and India procure raw materials and electronic components from China, which has disrupted the supply chain of many dental equipments and product manufacturers. However, with the decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases, hospitals are likely to begin scheduling elective procedures, depending on their capacity of admission and patients comfort level.

Sinus Dilation Devices Market Size, Share, Growth, Analysis Forecast to 2030
Sinus Dilation Devices Industry Overview
The global sinus dilation devices market size was valued at USD 2.74 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.6% from 2023 to 2030.
The high preference for minimally invasive procedures, favorable reimbursement scenarios, rising awareness about the advantages of balloon sinuplasty over other conventional techniques, and the prevalence of chronic sinusitis are the major factors fostering the market growth. Developing advanced surgery techniques helps increase the market dynamics by replacing traditional procedures.
Gather more insights about the market drivers, restrains and growth of the Sinus Dilation Devices Market
Technological advancements, such as surgical laser technologies, in sinus surgery ensure minimal ablation and have fewer side effects. Decreased turnaround time enables these procedures to be performed in outpatient departments. For instance, in 2022, the National Health Service (NHS) introduced an innovative laser treatment for patients with epilepsy. This pioneering therapy utilizes lasers to target and treat areas of the brain that cause seizures, providing a new and advanced approach to managing epilepsy and improving patients' quality of life.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to interruptions in routine patient care. Many healthcare organizations have canceled routine clinic visits and elective surgeries to increase and maintain the availability of intensive care and inpatient care beds and have reorganized medical and nursing staff. This has particularly interrupted care for patients with chronic rhinitis. The patients opted for teleconsultations and temporary options for sinus-related problems.
For instance, in Canada, there was a significant decline in the number of surgeries during the first 31 months of the pandemic, amounting to approximately 937,000 fewer surgeries (14%) compared to the pre-pandemic period. These figures were determined by comparing the surgeries performed since March 2020 to a baseline of 2019 without considering population growth or other factors. The most substantial drop in surgeries occurred in the initial four months of the pandemic (March to June 2020), when many scheduled and non-urgent procedures were postponed or canceled across the country to align with public health guidelines.

Electronic Voting Machine (EVM): an Indian account
Voting: an entry gate of Democracy
Electronic voting is the standard means of conducting elections using Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). Voting technologies have a long history. In the United States, mechanical lever voting machines were first used for elections in 1892 and were commonly used in U.S. elections until the 1990s. Electronic technologies began to appear in the 1960s with punch card counting machines. In the following decades, technologies such as DRE voting machines, ballot scanning machines and Internet voting began to appear.
Through the 1990s and the first decade of the new millennium, an increasing number of countries around the world also started to adopt these technologies. Several countries have tried electronic approaches and stopped because of difficulties or concerns about security and reliability.
Finland: Trialed in 2008; Review in 2016-17 concluded against internet voting â risks outweigh benefits, Germany: Trialed in 2005, but court found it unconstitutional in 2009, Netherlands: Discontinued 2007, Japan: No municipal governments use electronic voting â Last city stopped electronic voting in 2018. Other countries such as Australia, Spain, Sweden and the UK do not use electoral voting in political elections.
Also, electronic voting requires capital spending every few years to update equipment, as well as annual spending for maintenance, security, and supplies. If it works well, its speed can be an advantage where many contests are on each ballot. Hand-counting is more feasible in parliamentary systems where each level of government is elected at different times, and only one contest is on each ballot, for the national or regional member of parliament, or for a local council member.

The Nordic Council is the official body for formal inter-parliamentary Nordic cooperation among the Nordic countries.
Formed in 1952, it has 87 representatives from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden as well as from the autonomous areas of the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Ă
land. The representatives are members of parliament in their respective countries or areas and are elected by those parliaments. The Council holds ordinary sessions each year in October/November and usually one extra session per year with a specific theme.
The Nordic Council uses the three Continental Scandinavian languages (Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish) as its official working languages, while interpretation and translation service is arranged for Finnish and Icelandic (but never between the Scandinavian languages). The council also publishes material in English for information purposes. The Council refers to Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish collectively as Scandinavian and considers them to be different forms of the same language forming a common language community.
On 31 October 2018, the council established it has five official languages, giving Finnish and Icelandic equal status with Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish from 1 January 2020 onward. While the working languages of the council's secretariat remain the three Scandinavian languages, the Council emphasised that the secretariat must include personnel with comprehensive understanding of Finnish and Icelandic as well.

S.V. DĂĄte at HuffPost:
WASHINGTON â President Joe Biden on Tuesday praised the NATO alliance at its 75th anniversary celebration as he potentially became the last U.S. president to address the groupâs annual summit. Biden told the civilian and military leaders from 32 countries assembled in Washington that the alliance, founded after World War II to keep the peace in Europe and thwart Soviet expansionism, has a new mission in stopping Russian dictator Vladimir Putinâs invasion of Ukraine.
âToday NATO is more powerful than ever â 32 nations strong,â he said at evening ceremonies at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium, where the founding treaty was signed in 1949, as he welcomed the two newest members, Sweden and Finland. âOur commitment is broad and deep,â he said. âOur nations will continue to keep faith in what we pledged in years to come.â How long the United States will honor that pledge, though, is unclear. Donald Trump, the coup-attempting former president who will become the Republican presidential nominee next week to challenge Bidenâs reelection, has long threatened to abandon NATO. According to his own defense secretary, Trump planned to pull out of the alliance in his second term â a plan foiled by his loss to Biden in the 2020 election.
John Bolton, his former national security adviser, said Trump had wanted to withdraw in his first term and almost did at the summit in 2018. Bolton said Trump never understood how NATO worked and did not care to learn. âHe spent four years as president, he didnât know anything about it when he entered the Oval Office, and he didnât know anything about it when he left,â Bolton said in an interview earlier this year. [...] Although Biden told the audience that Americans appreciate the work of NATO, it is nevertheless unclear what anyone could to do to stop Trump from unilaterally withdrawing from the treaty if he is elected and chooses to do so, as presidents have sweeping power in international affairs. It is also unclear whether NATO could survive without the United States for the four years of a second Trump presidency â or longer if he chooses not to leave office at the end of it.
Last night, President Joe Biden (D) addressed the annual NATO Summit, and he could possibly be the last sitting US President to address the organization.
Donald Trump, if he gets elected into office again, would like to pull the US out of NATO, which would be a calamitous disaster and another way to pucker up to Russia.

Decivilisation
Decivilisation is the new buzzword. Emmanuel Macron uses it to describe workers who take to the streets, young people in the suburbs or environmental activists. All of Europeâs right-wing parties use the same word to say that Europe is losing its civilisation and is being replaced by barbaric migrants. âBy using the term âdecivilisationâ to describe the increase in violence in France in recent months, Emmanuel Macron is using controversial and contradictory notions to designate what he considers to be a political reality todayâ.
The word decivilisation is a concept coined by a German sociologist, Norbert Elias, in 1939 to explain how fascists called into question science, intelligence and civilisation in order to appeal solely to peopleâs emotions and destroy democracy. Fascists burn books and persecute intellectuals with the pseudo-Darwinist argument that we must favour the strong and stop protecting the weak because it is unnatural.
In France, there has been a deliberate effort to decivilise since the 1990s. In 1991, Jacques Chirac justified violence against immigrants because of the noise and smell. (https://www.ina.fr/ina-eclaire-actu/video/s1152333_001/le-bruit-et-l-odeur-de-jacques-chirac). For the first time, a political leader justified behaving like a bully instead of using the rules of society, and he was elected in 1995. In 2005, Nicolas Sarkozy and the kĂ€rcher (https://www.ina.fr/ina-eclaire-actu/nicolas-sarkozy-en-2005-le-terme-nettoyer-au-karcher-est-un-terme-qui-s-impose) reduced the inhabitants of the suburbs to filth. Itâs dehumanising part of the population. In 2018, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, says that all you have to do to find a job is cross the street (https://www.rtbf.be/article/je-traverse-la-rue-et-je-vous-trouve-du-travail-jonathan-chomeur-a-mal-digere-les-conseils-de-macron-10022373). When leaders speak in these terms, they are the actors of decivilisation. When they set up illegitimate authorities where the people have no means of expressing themselves, all thatâs left is ecoterrorism or street violence. Debate is no longer possible.
There have never been so many disciplinary sanctions in the National Assembly as under Emmanuel Macronâs term of office. Instead of having manners and dignity, elected representatives, from France Insoumise among others, are behaving like savages. The barbarians are those who cry decivilisation. (https://www.lemonde.fr/les-decodeurs/article/2023/07/21/a-l-assemblee-nationale-un-nombre-record-de-sanctions-depuis-la-reelection-d-emmanuel-macron_6182897_4355770.html). The first to encourage the process of decivilisation come from those who are supposed to set an example and implement ways of organising debates to settle differences non-violently. The same thing is happening in all Western democracies. Elected representatives compete in outrageousness and the extreme right applauds and wins the elections. When you set an example of brutality, you restore fear in people, who then look for a protector. Giorgia Meloni claims to protect the people like a mother protects her children (How are women transforming the modern far right? | ARTE Kreatur: https://youtu.be/Z4OUjrHDlQI). In Sweden, the authorities accepted a demonstration by people burning a Koran (https://www.tdg.ch/la-police-autorise-un-rassemblement-qui-prevoit-de-bruler-le-coran-434500290221). In parliaments, members of parliament get into fistfights, make noise to prevent others from speaking, and so on. If there is no justice and no police to defend him, the citizen must look for a protector who will use force. Politicians have set society on fire by endorsing violence. The first arsonists are those in positions of responsibility. We need rules to protect citizens and not leave it up to the bullies to decide, and we need to put the means in place to achieve this. It is the absence of civilisation that puts us in danger. We need to keep up the barriers that prevent people from behaving like bullies.
âItâs our society, in its toxic relationship with nature and the Other, that is profoundly violent. We spend gigantic sums of money to kill the soil, poison people, impoverish the countries of the South, slaughter billions of animals and drive migrants back into the sea. The Cameroonian historian Achille Mbembe uses the term ânecropoliticsâ to evoke this modern civilisation littered with corpses, where the âmethodical administration of deathâ mobilises science, the army, industry and technologyâ.(https://reporterre.net/La-decivilisation-est-une-chance).
