Eldritch Archer (Pathfinder Second Edition Archetype)

Though it has gone through a curious name change, today’s archetype is another blast from the past in the form of a prestige class turned 2nd edition archetype.

Whether it was because of weird legal reasons (like making treants “Arboreals” or the primary name for sahuagin “devilfish” despite keeping the sahuagin name) or something else, (such as being open to all mystical disciplines, not just arcane) the arcane archer of yore is now the Eldritch Archer!

Much like it’s past incarnations, this specialization is built around combining magic with archery. However, unlike previous editions, there is no stated connection to elves, and you don’t even have to be a mage of any kind beforehand to gain the benefits! All that is required is some level of expertise with a bow, and the archetype will happily provide the missing magic should your character lack it. That being said, having a proper arsenal of spells will diversify your magical options, but if you want to be more martial with a slight mystical edge, you are perfectly welcome to.

As you might imagine, this archetype retains many of the classic magical archer abilities, geared towards the 2nd edition assumptions, of course.

 The basic dedication of the archetype grants them the ability to infuse a spell they have to aim (either a melee touch or ranged attack) into an arrow and firing it, conducting the spell through the arrow. If the character lacks magic, they also learn a basic attack spell to add to their arrows.

Naturally, those without normal spellcasting can learn basic, expert, and master spellcasting in their own, limited way.

By infusing their arrows with psychic trauma, they can inflict greater pain upon foes from afar and even debilitate them from afar.

They also learn how to add temporary minor enchantments to their arrows for offensive or utility purposes, learning three such techniques. Obviously they must quickly use these arrows before the magic dissipates.

Similarly, they can infuse arrows with the essence of silver, cold iron, or even later adamantine to help pierce the defenses of foes and exploit their weaknesses.

They can also bend the path of their arrows, letting them veer around corners and obstacles to strike around cover.

Alternately, they can imbue their arrows with the ability to phase through matter other than their target, passing through such cover and obstacles, even their foe’s shield, though magical barriers can still stop it.

Perhaps their most powerful magical enhancement allows them to make a single arrow supernaturally lethal, seeking the most vulnerable part of their body, dealing grievous injury and potentially even slaying the target outright with lethal necromantic magic.

Additionally, the most powerful are able to unleash an impossibly fast volley of arrows, unleashing a withering rain of arrows in a close cluster.

If you are planning on being a ranged damage dealer with both spells and arrows and the combination of the two, the eldritch archer is certainly a tempting prospect, and the fact that you don’t even need to be a casting class or take a multiclass archetype to get spells in the first place to take it means that nearly anyone can benefit from it. Of course, classes that grant extra benefits to their ranged attacks are probably the best bet, though again, you can either focus on the martial side or the spellcasting side, or some combination of both. Obviously, if your spellcasting comes entirely from the archetype, your spell choices will be entirely combat-related ones you can add to your arrows, while you might diversify if you have a proper casting class.

 The biggest thing that has changed about this archetype from the 1st edition prestige class is that it is no longer limited by the types of spellcaster you have to be to make use of it, which implies the tradition either evolved to accommodate every casting tradition, or four entirely separate spell-archer traditions evolved separately or arose from cross-study and cultural exchange, which can be a nice bit of lore if you work it into your game somehow.

  Though she is small, Velka the shoony has a strong, harmonic voice that lends itself well to her bardic training. However, she is more than a mere bard, for she learned how to “sing” her arrows to enchant and direct them, striking foes with uncanny accuracy and various magical effects.

 The captain of the Westfort reserve is legendary for his aim, as well as the various elemental effects he can imbue into his arrows on the fly. He doesn’t talk about where this power comes from or where he learned it, but visiting mages confirm it is primal in nature.

 Typically, one thinks of flesh golems as hulking things with little grace, but the creations of Kalkras the Death-Archer are different, wiry things with massive longbows grafted to their limbs, and granted a measure of their accuracy, if not the foul spells they lace their arrows with.

Hi it’s been a year since I’ve posted. Did some drawings since I picked up CROB for it’s 7th anniversary. I finally got the Primal Mercy costume so I’m hyped about that. So I finished a couple of doodles that’s been sitting around for a while.

So... recently I got into DnD

And I don't mean like haha roll to seduce the doors and dragons, I mean like, actually getting into it.

Honestly, I can't be surprised. This should be expected. I play friggin Undertale, Deltarune, Pokemon... hell, I watch the Owl House. That show is legit the equivalent of making a campaign and animating it.

But ye, here's Lulu but Dungeons and Dragons edition. We went through so many species for her so she can at least keep some of her traits and powers.. Changling, Trifling, Vampire.. But they either didn't fit fully or were just too op (coughs at the vampire) so we settled on a hybrid the we tinkered with a bit.

Since she's a warlock, I didn't want her to be completely useless if she ever used her magic slots fully, so I gave her some extra weapons, just in case. However, I did nuke her a bit artificially by giving the second lowest stat I rolled to her intelligence. So she probably won't be upgrading from her basic non magical bow for a while anyway.

Also, yes. she has a familiar with a dumb name. Fight me.

She doesn't know why people are attracted to her. She just says hi and people suddenly want her to be their goat mommy (Looks at the asks in the other account). In reality she's kinda introverted, has anxiety, and any flirts she throws at you are by complete accident. All she wants to do is get rid of her curse, eat kale and play music on occasion.... and beat up a little trifling and his fox.

Context: I play what is effectively a Fighter who is a Lesser Eldritch entity (seriously emphasis on the Lesser my DM and I went at lengths to make this work and not be bullshit overpowered or stupid) that hunts Spirits and Ghosts. Recently they found themselves on the wrong end of the law (espionage is not a crime I swear) and a Guardsman archer was shooting downhill, prompting the following:

Archer: Fires off first shot that misses.

Me: I'm gonna move behind another try while projecting my voice throughout the woods and say, "1."

DM: Okay, I'll say they get disadvantage on the next shot because they got thrown off by what, to them, sounded like a loud but source-less voice and they don't know exactly where you went, but they know you moved.

Me: Okay, now centering my voice I mesh it together with a bunch of whispers and say, "Where did he go? Where did it go? Where did they go? I lost it." And then peek my head out from behind the tree with my glowing red eyes and stare at them.

DM: You know what, f### you and your analogue horror, roll intimidation with advantage because I hate you.

2. Thank you for this blog. I am looking for a fic that I read a few years ago, focused on Lan Sizhui. I think the pairing was ZhuiLing or else it was focused on Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, and Jin Ling in some combination. They were still cultivators, Lan Sizhui was a monster/tentacle monster/eldritch kind of creature when he wasn't in human form and the Lan clan helped keep this secret. I think it was because he was a Wen but I don't remember the exact explanatiom now. It was a bit long, as I think it had some chapters, and the juniors were still cultivators who went on night hunts and trained. 8. Hi! I need your help once sgain. Because once again I thought I had this fic bookmarked, but can't find it, and my Google-fu has failed too, so here goes: x number of years ago, Wei Ying and the Wen Remnants vanished from the Burial Mounds. Lan Zhan has never stopped searching for Wei Ying. There are strange rumors everywhere that WY & the others are in a resentment-filled no man's land (kind of like the void in the Shadow & Bone novel) where huge deadly monsters roam. Word is also that people who really need help have safely disappeared into this void. As time passes, rumors of strange cultivators suddenly appearing to aid people are also circulating. And I think Lan Zhan actually meets Xiao Xingchen in an inn at one point & it's clear he knows Wri Ying (he & Song Lan turn out to be Wei Ying's right-hand men). LZ does try to get into the void thing, but the energy is too strong & he barely makes it out of the area. After a number of years they get a message out of the blue, i think, from WY saying that the monsters are getting out, and WY ends up bringing the Wei Sect back to the cultivation world to help fight. Wei Ying will have nothing to say or do with Lan Zhan, at least to start, which Lan Zhan is devestated by. Um...and Lan Yuan is there, grown up & still the Best Boy ever. I think A-Yuan tirns out to be a Gusu Lan fanboy. Anyway, it turns out Wei Ying created a ghost path that allows the Wei Sect to safely use resentful energy. But you find out WY got too damaged back in the beginning and by the end they defeat the monsters but he's dying, so Lan Zhan gives Wei ying his golden core. I think LZ actually does the whole transfer himself in the Jingshi.

He wanted to kill all of them. Wangxian comes their to save Ayuan and they get saved in the process. They got some cursed so Ayuan request wangxian to let them stay in their house until their cursed is solved.they stay in their house and yanli tries to connect with wei wuxian but he doesn't. Wen Ning is also married. Also, wangxian are immortal. Wei ying form is crow which he uses to spy on his son for safety reasons. Also, lan xichen repents himself and tries to make amends and connect with the kids. Lan zhan is also trying to connect with his family. Also, that Jiang family is a bit#h (bitch), cheng verbally abuses wei wuxian at any chance he gets and yanli only knows to cry. Same with lan qiren,he is still the same. Nice mingjue is still alive but he also already got cursed. I don't know about lan zhan. I didn't read after because it was not completed.

I would swear I bookmarked this one but I can't find it anywhere!

It's a modern au where LWJ and WWX are college students. Iirc they are already in a relationship.

Iirc it opens with WWX and LWJ in a wrecked car which is possibly half hanging off a bridge - they'd been run off the road (though that's not established until later).

When the emergency services arrive, LWJ is taken to hospital but WWX is arrested for some bullshit reason - resisting arrest or something. Iirc the cops on the scene were Jin Zixun and Xue Yang.

There is worry from LWJ's family because they don't know what happened to WWX. Just that he was in the car and he should be in the hospital but isn't.

Later, WWX is in an interrogation room not making much sense because he's injured and hypothermic (it's winter and he was soaked through but he wasn't allowed to even dry off) then he gets left on his own.

I *think* he was tracked down by police (chief?) NMJ who got to WWX shortly before his heart stopped due to his injuries, the hypothermia, and the mistreatment while in custody.

That's all I can remember. Does this ring any bells for anyone? @greywake

14. Hi! This is for the fic finder. I'm looking for a fic where WWX takes A-Yuan and flees the Siege on burial mounts. He heads towards the ocean and meets XXC and SL, who travel in the same direction. He gives them a fake name and they eventually get to a seaside town where XXC and SL have a house that they offer WWX to stay in. I think in the last few chapters NHS found out he was there and WWX started to teach some town children (well, teenagers) so that the town has more protection and he doesn't have to use demonic cultivation.

I'm sure it's just one chapter and it's about Lan Wangji being cursed as a rabbit in the middle of his class, Wei Wuxian has a small bout of madness that involves torturing the spell caster because he thinks LWJ was killed in his presence (there's a mention that Jiang Wanyin was scared and didn't look him in the eye for a while, I think) until Lan Qiren pulls Bunji out of the fallen clothes. 16. I’m looking for this fic where Wwx is dead and while dead his (memories?) are shown to the cultivation world and when Wwx comes back everyone (or most people) consider him a good person. I believe in the description of this fic the Wwx that comes back this world is a different one from the one who dies in that universe. I also remember a scene in the fic where Wwx is overhearing people passing by talking about the compass he invented and he swore he named it something different, or he named something differently. Wei Wuxian is not strong, or at the very least his brute strength is not something he take prides in as much as his speed and flexibility, but those can only get you so far, and when going against stronger enemy, your mind is your trump card. Or, Wei Wuxian develop a time traveling array during the Sunshot Campaign in case everything went wrong but forgot about it after. It was during the Siege that people have disturb it along with Some other experimental talismans and truths was revealed a little to late.Wei Wuxian woke up in a world different from what he remembers.

What I remember is at some point Jin Guangyao did something to contradict his father I think so in punishment he was thrown to some abandoned mine. Lan bros, Nie Mingjue and Wei Wuxian were searching for him and WWX said he will use the spirits of the dead for the search. Others disagreed but he said that JGY doesn't have much time since it was really cold in the mine for someone without a good golden core. At this point LWJ started to suspect WWX doesn't have one, I think. Does this ring any bells? Thank you in advance! @themorrana

And I think it was time travel but I’m not too sure. It might not have been, I’m 90 % sure it was in the cloudless days though.

Anyway the only thing I really remember is that wwx tells lwj that the older disciples used to make him drink with them when he was younger, like he started young around 12 I think?

He mentioned to lwj that it took around two bottles of wine to get him drunk and that usually he didn’t have to drink that much around his year mates as they got passed out drunk pretty quickly.

I also remember lwj or someone telling him that his golden core had burned away the alcohol the entire time. Which had put it under some kind of strain I think?

Would guns be wands, badass Crossbows, or straight up magic, or different based on the game? They could also just be guns but that wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

Consider pistol=dagger, rifle=longsword, shotgun=axe? Grenades could be hand bombs or magic.

Or pistol=hand crossbow, rifle=light crossbow, shotgun is either special bolt or a spell

If we go dnd 5e rules, Chris is a fighter for sure, Jill is like a rogue I guess? Leon could go either. It could be fun to make Claire like a sorcerer since she gets the grenade launcher

In later games I think Chris definitely fits either paladin or barbarian, where Leon goes for more rogue/maybe ranger vibes. Jill seems more rogue+fighter but magic rogue is cool, maybe artificer. Claire would be sorcerer multiclass I think. Keep any mages low powered that way.

Sherry in 6 is maybe warlock or aasimar instead of Cleric? Blood hunter would be cool. Rebecca starts as a Cleric in 0 for sure. For a low magic setting where research and Rituals are matched by quick, small combat spells, how high of a DC do you think enemies would go?

Of course, in a classless system like gurps or all flesh, this would be a lot less restrictive. What would be the best system for resident evil normally? What would be the best one for its fantasy au?

Wesker very much fits the low-fantasy vampire theme. He has a reflection and can step in he sunlight but wow it hurts his eyes. Chris rolls a 20 to punch a boulder to death.

Leon has the lucky feat or 20 in dex or something to pull off his stunts. Chris also gets Charisma as a leader for the bsaa, so paladin is up his alley. Leon's secret service requires more rogue skills, but his time in operation javier trains his skills as a Ranger under Krauser maybe?

Jill and Claire both get grenade launchers, but Jill is more Rogue with her lockpicking so it makes sense for them to switch level ups later on as claire learns more professional skills for rogue training.

Barry definitely hits fighter/barbarian with his heavy weapons. Jake is maybe more monk/barbarian but with something like a dhampir ancestry feature? Sheva is maybe rogue/fighter or paladin fighter since thats when chris starts taking paladin levels. Billy has to be rogue/fighter I think, or maybe fighter/rogue, if he even gets a second class. It would almost make sense for him to be pure rogue and rebecca be cure cleric, since she retires to become a researcher and hes never heard from again. Helena is I guess just plain rogue, hinting at her role in 6, while Leon has his ranger levels. Piers is more rogue/Ranger (or fighter archer). A lot of the one off teammates just don't get super interesting classes as a consequence of their limited appearance. Carlos... Fighter? Just fighter is fine.

Now, the problem here is that each game starts off with little to no equipment for various reasons. In the case of our spell casters like claire and jill, we can't just de-level them between adventures in the resident evil campaign. But we could give them more limited access to spell components to match the resource management of survival horror.

This is more complicated outside of dnd 5e, where a game like All Flesh Must Be Eaten has very different spellcasting rules, so you'd need to stray from a low-magic to a straight low-fantasy setting. Alchemist tools and one use spell scrolls replace your grenades and spell casting maybe? That's the issue you'd run into with treating the setting as one campaign instead of each game as an individual campaign though.

The easiest one to do is RE8. It's literally the same. Ethan starts 7 as a human Commoner, takes levels in artificer as the game goes on, since that one introduced crafting, and comes back very subtly as a human variant with a few new levels in fighter from chris' tutoring. Hey that means we can give Hiesenburg an artificer friend! Class buddies ♡ hiesenburg is probably artificer/sorcerer, giving him charisma and intelligence. Dimetrescu is maybe barbarian if she even gets class levels.

I don't think we can justifiably say Rose is a variant human, I think she gets her own custom ancestry features for this. Sorcerer also feels better than Druid for her, but a couple levels in - you guessed it, rogue! Cover her gun and Stealth skills. You get a lot or rogues and fighters in low powered/low fantasy settings, who knew lol

More Eldritch Steve

Holly does not get scared easily she knows that her Stevie, her monster will protect her from anything she is afraid of no matter what or who it is.

Holly has always known Steve was a monster, she saw him as he really is when Nancy first brought him home.

She should have been frightened, should have hid from him in fear, but Holly has seen monsters, she saw them in Will's wall, she knows that Steve isn't a bad monster, not when he crawls under her bed to growl at the ones that live there or the way he sat all night against her closet door to keep the one that lived there inside.

He's a monster but he plays dolls with her when she asks, even after Nancy broke up with him.

Nancy got upset when Holly didn't warm up as easily to Jonathan as she had Steve.

But Nancy doesn't see Steve, not really, she sees his human image, his mimicry of humanity, she can't see, or maybe won't see, the monster that Steve is.

But Holly sees it, him, sees too many teeth bared at Ted the first time Holly heard him raise his voice at her mother, she sees him in the darkness that crawls through her window to check on her late at night.

Holly can see Steve the way he really is, he's her monster, her protecter, her safety net that she knows will always be there for her when she needs him.

So, when Holly gets scared, when Ted raises his voice and her mother's rises to match, she crawls out her window, uses the tree to get down and starts off to the dark of the woods where she knows her monster hunts.

Holly knows Steve will know she's there as soon as she enters the woods, he has never once lost her while babysitting with Nancy, even when she wondered off too far from them, he knows where she is, always.

He's her monster, he'll always find her and keep her safe.

Holly yawns and lifts her hands up when Steve looks down at her, she's safe now, nothing bad would be allowed to happen to her now.

Safe and sound in Steve's hold Holly Wheeler falls asleep, unaware of how her life is about to change.

Why do I feel like if leshy used (or had used in the past) a weapon that it would be a bow? Idk maybe it's the idea of a blind archer combined with his nature/hunter asctetic.

I do like that idea! Maybe the crowns change weapon types depending upon the bearers preferences, and one of Leshy’s is/was a bow! That would be neat! Unchained chaos Leshy would probably have liked using a bow, and maybe the claws! After he becomes blind he likes curses that take a wide range of affect, like the explosive ones. And the one he uses in his eldritch form, that sends spikes/thorns across the entire stage.

I do like the idea of him using or once using a bow! Like you said his nature/forest themes and he would fit pretty well as a hunter (which fits really nicely for Darkwood, it’s the only realm to reliably get meat without getting lucky with room layouts or relics. Sorry birds but the followers need to eat)
