Day 132 – Mexican night

Last night, Ashley handed us our interim bill. He said normally guests are asked to settle their bills in 2,000 rand increments, but they had let ours get to 6,000 ($400). We wisely decided to review the bill the next morning. J had a haircut this morning, so we headed to reception to sign our bill and so J could catch her Uber. We ran into Gareth and Kirsten from room 3 as they were checking out. Once again, Gareth was dressed like Scott in a Hawaiian shirt, khaki shorts and brown shoes. It is getting a bit ridiculous at this point. We bid them farewell and J headed to her appointment leaving S to sign the bill.

J went to Steven Alan Hair Design, which was recommended by our hotel owner. Costa was great, as promised and J is returning next week to touch up her colour. When J returned to the hotel, S was in the pool. She ordered two cocktails down to the room as Ashley was working. Meanwhile, Justine gave us some low key restaurant recommendations.

As S was now in the mood for Mexican food, we headed to El Burro in Greenpoint for an early dinner. On our way out, S told Ashley that we would be back in time for aperitivo hour(s) and he was looking forward to more chicken liver parfait canapés.

Sadly, the El Burro menu had changed and they were no longer offering happy hour, so we ordered a pitcher of ‘House Margarita’. J thought it tasted odd, but S was fine with it. The mystery was solved when J noticed that there’s also a ‘Cointreau Margarita’ on the menu. Cointreau is a standard ingredient in a traditional margarita. Apparently the House Margarita only contains tequila and fresh lime juice, hence the difference in flavour.

As many of the menu items were doused in melted cheese, J loved the food. S was less impressed as he was looking for a simple beef burrito or taco, which was not on offer. Also, he wasn’t a fan of the tortilla chips, which were a bit heavy, or the salsa. Everything on the menu had a ‘modern’ touch and the restaurant was pretty popular. During dinner, S spoke to his daughter, A, who informed him she is buying her first house. She is only 25. We are so proud of her.

We made it back to the hotel just a few minutes after aperitivo hour(s) started. Ashley had a double portion of the chicken liver parfait canapés waiting for S. We had another nice chat with Ashley debating what was the appropriate glassware for Amarula on the rocks. We also learned Amarula is flavoured with the amarula fruit, also known as the elephant fruit as elephants love to eat them. J prefers a brandy snifter, but Amarula’s official glassware is the Ypsilon glass. Of course, Atlanticview has these glasses and they are even branded with the Atlanticview logo. Apparently they are primarily for martini drinkers who don’t like stems. You learn something new every day.

We also learned that another Johannesburg couple has checked into the hotel and we saw the guy briefly. They are lying low for now and only popped out to grab some takeaway to eat in their room. We are hoping they will make an appearance at aperitivo hour(s).

We also learned that by the time we leave, we will have stayed here longer than anyone else during COVID. If we come back, we might get our names on a plaque temporarily renaming our room after us.
