I was reading up on the prompts for the UC Celebration next week and the prompt go Day One (Favourite Arc/Roll for AU) did get my mind percolating on something which I find deeply amusing:

Arc 11 Off the Rails: Coffeeshop AU

Does this count as an AU? Yes but like only *barely* and that’s what makes it so funny to me.

Some highlights of this concept that make me smile:

- They work at Albion Coffee Roasters. It’s just ✨Fantasy Starbucks✨ including shitty union busting tactics. This is still fantasy world with magic but also with like… cars and cell phones and shit.

- Foq is (obviously) not an employee. He is a trust fund baby who makes everyone else’s life difficult in the best possible way, as usual. Still always dressed in something fabulous but incredibly over the top. Pretends to be a college student, no one believes him.

- Suds was fired for tinkering with the various coffee machines. He was trying to make them better, and probably succeeded but like… it’s a shitty corporation.

- Piper is a harried appliance repair tech because I love her.

- Chet is an employee but no one is actually sure what his job title is because he never seems to do anything that an employee would be required to do. Yes, I know this is not particularly different from the arc. It is just Who Chet Is

- Rian and Atelut are exactly the same in every way as they were in the arc because working as a bartender and middle manager on a train owned by an evil corporation is essentially the same as working as a barista and middle manager in a coffeeshop owned by for an evil corporation. Probably fewer demons and plane shifting at the coffee shop tho. But not like… none.

hello (for the fanfic guessing game)

Turns out, I don't use "hello" in any of my ongoing wips! So here's a sneak peak in the first draft of what eventually became "You're the Boss" which you can check out here on ao3.

As you can tell, the final thing I published was REALLY different than what I first wrote.

The bit is below the cut.

“The Last Stop.” Atelut read aloud. “That’s what the message said. Yeah.”

“Before we had to burn it.” Suds wiped his hands off, as if he was a mechanic readying himself for work. “Let’s head in.”

They enter, and a gray Herengon stands in their way. Unmistakably Chet, but in disguise with a dubious mustache plastered right under his rabbit nose.

Atelut nearly did a double take, but before she could react,

“Password?”

She cleared her throat, “The passengers have arrived at the station.”

Chet cocked his brow, something that irked her when she was his manager but now seemed rather hilarious. Then he gestured into the bar. 

“Near the back.”

“I thought y’all didn’t open till dusk.”

Chet narrowed his eyes. “Sure feller. Sure.”

Atelut walked in, each footstep hitting crisp onto the bar floor. 

“Hello?”

“You showed up early.” Chet butted in. “Settle down here. Get some alcohol. I’ll get Rian.”

Now what she had to do was wait.

Happy UC Celebration Week! I finished a little bit of fic... I hope y'all enjoy me being shamelessly indulgent over my favourite ship.

Just a Handshake

Bartolomeu Albion grabbed Atelut's hand, begrudgingly but cordial. That was how the Albions shook hands. For him, this was just another handshake with yet another scapegoat. She should be grateful! Most discarded employees do not get the courtesy of a face to face termination, let alone a handshake. Still, she earned that much. She was reciting company line, even still, even after he explained that she would be watched and demonized. Atelut dedicated her life to Albion Rail, and she would continue to do so - in a way. So, Mr. Albion, of the goodness of his heart, felt she earned a parting gesture. It was only a handshake, after all.

The shake went on for longer than she recognized. Atelut kept her grip strong, the wave of anger, resentment, and grief flooding her judgment worse than Foq’s drinks did the night before. As she imagined her life without the only purpose she ever knew, an urge welled up inside and for just a moment she wondered what would happen if she channeled all of it right into the very hand she shook. She thought about it as Rian talked, and her attention shifted to how boldly he tried to defend her.

Chapter 2/2 is finally up!

The resistance is growing, and that means plans, and allies. Rian and Atelut haven't spoken since they departed Scenda some time ago, but maybe it's time to rectify that.
