Matt knew it was perhaps not the right time to talk about such serious subjects, but he knew too many people who tried to drown their pain in booze. He knew it was dangerous for them, often in more ways than one. And such a danger had currently presented itself as he moved to separate the drunken man and  Elaine.

Elaine feels a sense of dread weighing upon her chest, a feeling that is all too familiar. But she will remain calm for the sake of Matt not having to deal with a woman with a mental break down. “But… I don’t walk to think about it. It’s too much.”

What she just experienced was an event that was also all too familiar unfortunately… She’s a magnet for creepy men’s cheesy cat calling and vile comments. But this small group of men took it too far, with Elaine minding her business, a intoxicated man pulls her close against her will.

And luckily, Matthew was there to watch the whole thing.

"Just a little molasses." she lies, applying her fingers to her lips and cleaning them rather delicately. "I've been doing some baking."

Matt nodded. He could at least say he wasn’t the worst of men or what mankind had to offer overall. He feels the tension leave the air at the change of subject.

“That she is. though she’d probably chastise you over smoking if she were here. Me on the other hand, it’s your business, not mine.”

Before she goes on, her dainty hand reaches down her breast pocket from her dress and sneaks out a cigarette. Taking out her own lighter, Elaine flicks it open to bring the flame to the end of the stick, and then inhaling the nicotine. Before pulling it out from her red stained lips, blowing out the cloud of smoke.

“Your wife is a very lucky woman.”
