Hi! You were asking for questions about your aus and I've been meaning to ask you this for a while: what do you think Elaina was like as a person/ how are you characterising her in your Elaina Lives AU? Obviously, she's very important to the twins but they very rarely talk about her, which is understandable on their part but does make her slightly elusive as a figure. There's a small handful of concrete things and a small collection of implications but not much else.

I've been working on something set in an au where she's alive and I'm happy with where I've landed for the characterisation, but I know it's far from the only way she can be interpreted. So, as I've been writting I've gotten interested in what different end result someone else would make with the same pieces and I know characterisation is something you take a lot of pride and care in.

I've been approaching it very much by looking at the twins and what of their traits and behaviours they likely inherited from her. This is ... not easy necessarily but a lot of fun, because it's kind of like everything that isn't directly gained from Syngorn that's up for grabs?

Like... Vax's attitude is due to and exacerbated by Syngorn. Vex's social awareness and social caution come from Syngorn. Her tact on the other hand? Likely from Elaina! Vax's more generous and deeply caring side? Again, likely from Elaina! It's also not impossible that Vax's depression is inherited from Elaina and exacerbated by circumstance - some parts of mental health, especially any hormone imbalances, can be heritable. We know too that the twins loved her and felt loved and cared for by her, so she was likely doing her best to be a good and loving single mother to them.

Now, I'm picking and choosing for this AU based on what works best for the story I'm telling and that means that some of these differences between interpretations are mostly just gonna be... what feels right? What feels fun? And because there's so much up for grabs in her characterisation none of this is absolute; in another AU I might well change things up.

But the things I do have down are:

Vex's frugality comes from survival but her way with numbers? That's inherited from Elaina.

Vax's stubbornness comes from her; she never wanted to give up the twins to Syldor and he Charmed her into letting him. She just wanted support for their rearing, never for him to take them from her.

(Vax's ability to seethe and resent comes from her too.)

Vex's tact comes from her, and the ability to notice and think things out and sit on observations til you're ready to admit them.

Similarly, Vax's more warm social ability comes from her. Elaina didn't have the same pressures as Vex moulding her to be quiet so often; she knows when to speak up and isn't that afraid of doing so when she's sure of her standing.

She loves the twins. She resents Syldor. When given the chance to help her children again, she takes it with both hands, unhesitating and unstinting. (That's something else Vax gained from her: throwing oneself forward without caution for sake of those one loves.)

There'll be more as I write more I'm sure, but that's my starting point! I also think that, seeing the twins grown up, she'd be concerned about their codependency - glad that they're there for each other but wishing they weren't so dependent on each other. Wishing it hadn't come to that for them. She, as every good parents wishes, wants only the best for them - for them to have every chance and freedom she can afford them.

We know Gwen is 'Daddy's Little Princess' type close with Percy, and that of all their kids Vex is closest with the twins, and its really not hard to conclude that Vex is also a bit more affectionate with Vax'ildan II as he reminds her of her brother, but I also really like the idea of Vesper being a bit of a 'Daddy's Girl' too. Just picture a peaceful afternoon in Whitestone, Percy reading in the library with their bookend babies curled up on either side of him, while Vex and their wild middle children teasingly track eachother through the woods in some sort of game.

taliesin admitting gwen is percy's favorite hurts me in a very eldest daughter kind of way because like.

vesper elaina was probably heralded as like "the future of whitestone" and the sign that whitestone was set to grow and propser after the briarwoods and after the chroma conclave and after vecna

literally her uncle says "the de rolo family is born anew" during the wedding oneshot and she probably has to carry that mantle as a child because even if her parents don't force that on her or remind her of all the things she is, she's still going to hear from the people of whitestone AND even if somehow she doesn't hear it openly, she is going to be well aware that her parents are heroes and famous and then the twins (wolfe and leona) are born and her mother was a twin, so then that's a little like thorn that she probably carries with her, especially when they both become invested in the hunt like their mother (which was shown when the Hells first went to Whitestone) and then her next sibling not only is named after her uncle but has a bear just like their mother which just leaves percy as someone she can feel close to and similar to and that goes on for about two decades until gwen is born and then gwen becomes percy's favorite and even though vesper is technically an adult it's like "oh. so I'm no one's favorite and never will be. but I still carry the burden of all the legacy."

there's also something to be said for the juxtaposition of potential aasimar Vesper due to the influence of Pelor during Vex's trial versus tiefling Gwen

Percy and Vex’s children say something like this and Percy and Vex are like ‘aw they don’t know poverty like we do’ snd pat themselves on the back for not traumatising them. and then realise they should send their kids on a survival day out or something

Like Vesper is like ‘why haggle? Why build something yourself? Just buy it?’ And Vex and Percy have simultaneous heart attacks

Imagine Vax Jr and Vesper hearing this because just think about it.

Vax is named after his uncle Vax and Vesper is named after Percy's sister, both of dead relatives. And yet they both aren't the closest to their parents.

I like to think Vesper used to be Percy's favourite and was a daddys girl, but then Gwendolyn came along. Vesper definitely struggled with being the eldest daughter and keeping appearances, so she felt like she couldn't be jealous of Gwendolyn because she was an adult and Gwendolyn is a child.

Danny (Vax Jr) was named after a man who was close to everyone Danny currently knows, his aunt Kiki was Vax'ildans lover, his mother Vex was the twin of Vax'ildan and the rest of his aunts and uncles know Vax'ildan as a great friend and someone to be honoured. But Danny doesn't think he's anything like him and feels like he brings shame to Vax's name.

When Vesper finds out about how Vax is facing the same problems as her, she just hugs him. He accepts it. From then on, the two kept checking in on each other and talked for hours and hours on end in private. Vax jokely calld Vesper 'Mum' on occasion when its just the two of them but he really does appreciate Vesper stepping up to help him when Vex and Percy both were unaware of what was going on.

Keyleth is well aware of what Vesper and Vax bond over and often helps them. She makes sure to talk to Vesper often and spoils Danny a bit more than his siblings. She lets him stay over the night in Zephrah when he can't handle the rest of the family and teaches him all about the Matron Of Ravens, so he understands why he is named after Vax.

Vex and Percy one day find out (via Gwen), but decide to let them keep their secrets but start trying to quietly help them. Percy spends more time with Vesper and asks her to join him in his office with Gwendolyn. Vex tells Danny stories of Vax being a dumbass ('Those damn boots').

It's not lost on me that Syldor thinks Vex is coming to be praised for what he thinks is her highest accomplishment (acquiring Fenthras), meanwhile her speech is a clear indicator of her mental state since it's a direct callback to THIS
