Headcanons of wha I think the HSMTMTS characters call their parents to them:

(This is bc I was writing Ash’s and thought how would everyone else say it)

Ashlyn: Dad/Momma (specifically when talking to them, otherwise I think she just tells people mom and dad casually. But to them it’s momma and dad)

Maddox/Jet: they canonically say mom and dad but I think to their faces they’d say something like Eoma and Appa

(for their Korean side- or whatever the writers think the characters are, I just feel like bc Saylor’s Korean that’s what they’d be)

Or something less basic, I don’t know.

Seb: mom and dad/ Papa (specifically papa at home, but to others in conversation he says dad, like when he was telling Carlos about his dad not being at the farm during his Quinces. But also papa to refer to a grandfather, if he has one.)

Gina: she canonically says Mommy, and I have no notes.

Ricky: simple Mom and Dad just fits. And it’s canon.

Kourtney: She says Mommy canonically, but I feel Ike the inflection is giving more of it being spelled ‘mommie’ or something

Big Red: mom and dad, but with the air of someone who talks about their parents as small business owners. Does this make sense?

Like he’s a family business kid and it shows bc he sounds so proud and smiley all of the time.

Nini: canonically it’s Mama (mama c and mama d) and I have no notes on this either shout-out to her gay moms

Carlos: something Spanish but in a sweet way like, his parents love him so much and he’s the same back so it’s just endearing and their all so proud of each other)

oh my goodness yes hsmtmts headcanons! I have some that I’ve been thinking about so apologies if this is a horrific mess that jumps all over the place :) also this is going to be very very long so apologies 🥰

after the whole “Romeo and Juliet announcement” for Christmas they get twin golden retriever puppies, one for each of them, and name them Romeo and Juliet. Juliet belongs to Ricky and Romeo belongs to Gina. Romeo is affectionately known as ro or romey and Juliet is affectionately known as ju or juju. (pretty sure this one has been said by people already but I LOVE the idea of it and i had to add Juliet)

furthermore on the Romeo and Juliet topic after Mack leaves Quinn asks Ricky to step in 😍

this is more down the line but I have a vision for in the future when Ashlyn and Maddox want kids. they want to adopt though, and as soon as they find the perfect little red haired munchkin Maddox immediately goes to the hardware store and buys tons of paint and they redo an entire room in their cute little cottage for their kid. idk why but that just came to me in the middle of the night, I had an image in my head of Maddie FaceTiming jet covered in paint laughing/crying as they finish up the room.

jet asks Kourtney out at the big New Year’s Eve party at Ashlyn’s. Enough said. she giggles and accepts and the two become a power couple and a force to be reckoned with.

ricky and Gina continue to meet in the secret stairwell and he continues to climb up through her window even after their relationship goes public

We don’t know what ej is majoring in (at least I don’t remember) so during the middle of his freshmen year he switches it to education. he becomes a teacher and goes somewhere else (somewhere in the Midwest maybe?) to teach middle school sports.

ricky pursues music through college and ends up becoming a famous singer/songwriter/music producer similar to nini but he ends up writing a lot of the songs and soundtracks for Gina’s movies.

Gina pursues her acting career and ends up becoming a total rockstar but she never changed her values and who she is. her and Ricky attend every premiere together

when Dewey gets too old to run camp shallow lake anymore, guess who he asks to take over? Maddox. she happily accepts and moves her and Ashlyn and their red haired baby (ash and Maddie are not married yet btw - can you adopt and still not be married? Dumb question maybe lol) over to California. and one day as they’re going through each of the cabins seeing what shape everything is in, they stop by the honeycomb bunk. Lo and behold as they walk in is a magnificent beautiful romantic picture before Maddox, with a huge framed picture of her and Ashlyn and tons of wild flowers and all her favorite guitars and things. She turns around… and there’s ash with a ring. Ashlyn doesn’t even get to pop the question until Maddox screams and tackles her, laughing and saying “I have to show you something!” She pulls ash behind her over to the theater barn and there is almost an identical setup on the stage, except all of Ashlyn’s favorite things. and now Maddox has a ring. You can guess how it ends. (sorry this one was super long but once I got started I couldn’t stop)

ricky has always enjoyed doing public things for Gina, as we’ve seen. He’s always shouting about his love for her in public, serenading her randomly as they walk through town, etc. well his proposal is exactly the same. They’re on the red carpet for a movie Gina had been kicking butt in (literally, it’s an action movie). (like everyone else has said, they got married young. You decide what age you want specifically) Ricky had been acting a bit nervous and Gina didn’t know why. once they got on the red carpet, in the very center of all those cameras and fans, Ricky took her hand and got down on one knee. Gina’s jaw dropped as Ricky gave the most beautiful profound speech in the world since “I love you forever” and immediately Gina started crying as she said “yes yes infinity times yes!” and everyone cheered and Ricky gave her the biggest hug of his life and spun her around did not let go of her for the rest of the night. *side note: when a reporter asked Ricky if he was nervous about proposing to Gina since it’s very public and what if she says no, Ricky replied with a “that’s not why I was nervous at all. No, I wasn’t nervous that Gina would reject me. We’ve been dating for so long, it’s just- we just get each other. We complete each other. I promised her forever and I’m never going back on that promise. because I do love her forever. No, the only reason I was nervous is because it’s so loud here and I didn’t know if she would hear the things I was saying. I was speaking from the heart! and because I’m on tv being recorded, obviously, what if I mess up and do something stupid? but no, I wasn’t worried at all that Gina would say no.” 🩷 (this one was also extremely long sorry!)

Saw some other rina headcanons (sorry this post might be a lot about them bc I’m in love with them so yeah) but one of them was Ricky gets Gina mystery childcare’s every Valentine’s Day and she literally knows who they’re from but plays along anyway because he’s adorable

Carlos and Seb continue to be a little on again off again through college but eventually settle down in a far-style version of glamping with a huge fancy central house and then a rusty old barn for Seb to do this thing with the cows and such

they have both boys and girls and Carlos insists on having a quince for every one of them (I’m thinking big family…)

all of the respective couples when they have kids name miss Jenn as the godmother 🥹

kourtney is a cat person. idk why. but you cannot change my mind. she’s gonna be a crazy old fashionista grandma with tons of cats telling her grandkids stories while her is half asleep next to her waking up every so often to say “and then I…” and then falling back to sleep

speaking of jetney, jet needs 60 million pep talks before he proposes to kourt - it takes a LOOOOOOOONNGGGG time

Kourtney becomes a world renowned fashion designer and jet is just along for the ride. they have twin boys and a girl and he raises them while working some boring 9-5 job but he loves raising his kids and teaching them all about music and their mama since she’s gone a lot. But they FaceTime every day after school whenever Kourtney’s away for her job, it’s the best part of any day

jenn and mazzy love New Zealand so much that they end up moving there once miss Jenn retires (don’t worry, it’s not for a long time) and when everyone goes for a big reunion party to celebrate the 25th anniversary of hsm4

mike and Lynn don’t actually get back together… do they actually get back together in canon? Or are they just like more friendly towards each other and not so standoffish? Because I dunno, a divorce is very final and then getting back together just offsets the whole change thing Ricky’s gone through. But anyways, that’s just me

nini goes on tour Ricky and Kourtney’s freshmen year in college and Kourtney comes back from Lewis to see her perform in Salt Lake City. nini gets everyone prime seating - even Emmy and jet and Ricky - and they all go and have the best time ever. Ricky and nini don’t kill each other on sight and turns out nini is the biggest die hard rina fan ever and ends up writing a song for them on their wedding day. her and Ricky go back to being better friends and things aren’t so tense after they have a huge raging private concert between them too where they sing all of the thoughts they’ve ever had about each other and just let it all out. It’s very therapeutic for them and helps them understand each other a bit more (same vibe as portwells lil thing in season four where Gina apologizes to ej)

Happy HSMTMTS Appreciation Week :DD!!

Day 1 - Favorite Character

I love them all that I really would be hard pressed to rank them. But, admittedly, Carlos and Seb are at the top lol. Them I couldn't choose between.

However, I currently have walking pneumonia, and while it may keep me walking, it does not keep me able to make posts easily xD. So, I'm going to share a bit of a WIP I started over a year ago and never finished. I wanted to at least start a Seblos fic before season 4 started, as I'd always meant to but never gotten around to it. Both of their characters are immensely important to me, together and separate. I know this seems more fitting for ship day but also consider: I don't care :p. Also, quickly, I'll share a few things a love or relate to about some of the characters.

Kourtney: Love seeing representation of anxiety, especially surrounding college stuff - that's so relatable 😭. And I love that it while it was ongoing, she did eventually find what she wanted (and stuff that helped her anxiety) - even if it took a few tries.

Ashlyn: Absolutely loved seeing her queer journey. As a bi person myself, it was amazing :'). And seeing Carlos welcome her into the community was just <3. Also, I love seeing her confidence grow throughout the show!

EJ: Love that he wasn't the villain forever! I adore EJ, and I'm glad they showed that redemption is totally possible

Gina: So happy to see different lights on her ambition - sometimes bad, sometimes good, but never forget those who are important to you <3. Love that.

Big Red: Another bi realization!! Not happy with how it happened (and I will stay in denial about how it was genuinely accidental or a cheek kiss or something until the day I die), but glad it did, and that he and Ashlyn stayed together for a while after it happened - bi doesn't mean you immediately leave your partner to be gay. Also, Big Red is a really great friend and I love that :').

Ricky: Love seeing the outsider to theatre perspective! Same goes for Big Red. It's such a crazy thing to be thrust into lol. But also, seeing how entrenched and happy he becomes in it and its traditions by the end of the show is :').

Nini: I love that she knows her own worth, and also has to take a minute to find what's best for her. Arts school? Nah, not at the moment. East High? For a bit, and then things changed. Music on her own? Yeah, maybe :'). I do wish she could've been there at the end but in my mind she was <3.

Seb: I honestly love that he gets to be the innocent one and that's okay. As a long-time innocent one (even if I do actually know things just don't talk about/do them lol), it's nice to see him being accepted :'). And of course, the queer representation <3. I'll talk more about that during favorite ship, but especially seeing Seb play with gender presentation is so amazing ❤️.

Carlos: I'm so glad they explicitly said he was bullied, because while I agree that HSMTMTS is overall a positive show and don't want it to be bogged down all the time by negative stuff like that, it's so important to acknowledge. And that going from that, he found his family in theatre :'). Even though he worried that they wouldn't accept him, even though he might've participated before (a common headcanon) and just didn't have it as much, he found it. And again with the ambition - it's not a bad thing to be ambitious :). And, like I've said, the queer representation <33.

Maddox: Not an OG but I don't care :). Once again, love the queer representation, but I also just totally relate to the "too much, too loud" worry. You have great moments with people and then it's "yeah! Cool. . See you next time :')". I'm so glad she found her family <3.

Jet: Also not an OG but again, I don't care :). Another point for redemption, but also that stuff is complicated. He hurt Maddox, even if he didn't intend to, and that's just how it is sometimes. You have to try and do better, and he does :'). Although she also does have to readjust some things, which I love <3. Also just his mistrust of the theatre family - so real, but I'm glad they stick together :').

Emmy: Again not an OG, but I don't care :). I love her silliness and creepiness lol. But also, I so relate to that "younger siblings" energy. And the "I'm trying to hold it together for everyone", especially "I'm trying to hold it together but I'm the young one and I shouldn't have to do this". I've been putting my soul into theatre for years, through some rough times, and I just totally feel her <3.

Mr. Mazzara: Another point for redemption! Also I'm glad he acknowledges later on that he shouldn't have let his personal stuff influence stuff he did or said (in a bad way). It happens to the best of us and it sucks but I love that he acknowledges it :').

Miss Jenn: Feeling lost. My gosh, feeling lost. So relatable. It's terrifying because you have a dream and you want so badly to achieve it, but you also know that you can "fail" and get sent on a totally different path. And that's terrifying. But I'm glad that, after everything, she's happy :'). I so love to see that she doesn't need her big dreams, realizes that while she didn't fail, she's happy just where she is :'). That's okay <3.

Okay those got longer than I thought I'd be up for but yay!! Lastly, I just love that it's about theatre. That they're all involved, some way, with theatre. I know I didn't include side characters but trust me I love them all <3. And I love seeing the different ways everyone is involved in theatre, their different roles and niches and experience levels. It's so great to see, and to see my process, our process, that I'm so familiar with reflected on screen is honestly really important to me :').

just finished binging the entirety of high school musical: the musical: the series in six days and now i'm going to ramble about it for longer than anyone would care to read. it's gonna be generally positive but definitely nini and olivia unfriendly so if you dont wanna read that... dont ♥️♥️

so i suggested to my sister a while ago that i wanted to watch the show bc the videos that youtube commentary channel "pretty much it" did for it were hysterical. and she had watched the first couple of eps by herself and was like "i dont think you'll like it. its not as funny as they make it seem". but we finally decided to start it anyway

(also i dont know the entire casts' real names so i'll mostly refer to them as their character names)

season 1:

that first season was kind of rough. especially the pilot. it got better over time but its definitely my least favorite season over all. im not even a fan of high school musical so it lacked the nostalgia enjoyment for me

and i definitely did not like nini and her main character syndrome. and sorry to say but i think olivia is the least talented cast member over all. pretty privilege is so real like she didnt deserve to be the break out star she was just the most marketable. kourtney and ashlyn's voices were so strong and stellar, and they might not've been Dancers but they could definitely move. and gina was the best dancer in the fucking world and while i do think her voice wasnt as good, she could obviously still sing. nini's best talent moments were when olivia was shining thru imo (that one taking it for gra-a-a-anted song comes to mind first) but i was not here for the acoustic numbers and honestly i dont think she was a great actress

so i definitely wasnt a fan of the whole nini ricky gina ej love square. i know its a tried and true teen show staple but goddamn it got tiring. i just never liked rini and i didnt like how nini treated him right from the start asklfjlds. she was also rude as hell to everyone else, especially gina, being all passive aggressive towards her. literally saying she wanted to kick gina in the face bc gina is a good dancer and she's intimidated?? but also all the talk in general about gina being intimidating or aggressive or a bad seed like ??? the microaggressions were off the charts

not to mention the fucking macroaggression of kourtney's entire s1 "character". i think hattie mcdaniel had a more nuanced role in gone with the wind. it was so fucking painful to watch. she didnt exist to be anything other than nini's personal soundboard, cheerleader, stylist, life coach, and whatever else she needed in the moment. thank god they gave her a real character by s2 bc kourtney was way too talented, too gorgeous, too charismatic to be forced into the role of nini's handmaid the whole time

i dont really have much to say about s1 cause i wasnt into it at the time lol. it was okay. all the actors did a good job, it was kind of funny, the only song that really stood out was miss jenn's fantasy sequence song with lucas. the actually high school musical show they put on was painful to watch but thats high school theater for you babyyy

season 2:

this was such an improvement from s1 and my favorite season over all. there were a handful of eps in the middle where i was constantly like "this is my fave ep" "ok this is my fave ep" "ok now THIS is my fave ep" it was a delight. i love beauty and the beast and was so happy for ashlyn getting belle, and everyone else was very well cast. although idk why seb was chip and not cogsworth?? my sister said it was bc disney didnt want to confirm that they were gay 💔💔

the music was obviously better bc we've got fucking alan menken on the track. all the numbers from the show were perfect. i wish ej had gotten to sing the gaston reprise bc he didnt get to reach his full gaston potential and i think we deserved that 💔

the debacle with the whole rose song was sooo annoying. nini deserved to be that fork. she dragged the whole show down like it was always so much better when she wasnt there aklfjlksd

the rivalry with the other school was lots of fun. i liked all the new characters. my favorite original song was miss jenn's number with derek hough

season 3:

this season was likeee a pleasant mid for me??? idk it was fine and fun but it didnt have anything in it that blew me away. i think this season was screaming for extra episodes more than any other, since we were missing a chunk of the cast. we deserved to cut back to salt lake every now and again and see what the non-camp-goers were up to

kourtney and gina as elsa and anna was a dream. not the biggest fan of frozen but they did a good job. everyone looked so cute in their costumes and kourtney's solo was amazinggg. the new characters were fun but i dont have strong feelings towards them lol. but i loved getting to explore kourtney's character and her struggles with anxiety, that was very real

them filming a documentary was funny bc have they not been filming one this whole time? my headcanon was that the to-the-camera interviews were all in their heads and everyone was practicing for when they became famous lol but then ricky ruined that in s4 by acknowledging them directly rip 💔

i liked after their show ended and they all got sharpies and wrote their names on the walls back stage. that was definitely a potent theater kid memory and got me a lil teary eyed

i liked ej taking on the role of director and copying miss jenn's hand holding and high pitched singing at the first read thru. i liked ej and gina together i thought they were cute. it was disappointing that the show wouldnt commit to them for even a minute and they always had to be teetering on the edge between being a couple and not. that was frustrating

very very fun season again. loved the chaos of filming the movie at the school while school is happening. as if every movie set in a real school doesnt shoot in the summer. oh well. gotta have a season!

there was too much mack for me personally. i dont think he gave wanted they wanted to be given. i needed more dani tho. her actress was so good at bad acting. she couldve been a much bigger comedic presence also she looked like a cross between sofia carson and emma roberts but sometimes just looked like a latina emma roberts ??? is that just me??

and still the lack of seb and big red at the beginning like ?? did they specifically piss off the writers so they had to banish them for nearly half the show?

loved that the little girl from camp was there. she stole the show. and maddox and jet are fine alskfjsldk i just didnt form strong opinions on them but i do like them

ashlyn's "i need to give her mouth to mouth! AS A FRIEND!" was the funniest line of the entire show hands down

so happy they finally had a halloween episode! it was lots of fun and everyone looked so cute in their costumes uwu. but that guy from camp that was stalking carlos??? that was so bizarre and it never paid off likeee what was the reason

and gina's mom was pissing us off so bad. she was acting wild this season. like gina has to focus on her studies so no boys but she can work from sun up to sun down on a movie lmao. and her mom had the nerve to be like "well i never came to your shows bc that was just high school theater but THIS is a movie" like wooow. and i swear it felt like she was about to sell gina off to mack bc he was famous. and when she started with that "porters dont wait around" mess and ricky cleared her with a quickness with that whole "well i seem to remember gina waiting around for you on opening night" like damn

and omg when mack was over for dinner and ricky came over with chocolates but saw him thru the window. i was like ugh fuck its gonna be the stupid thing where he sees this and gets the wrong idea and its gonna be a stupid wedge between him and gina that doesnt need to be there bc no one can communicate BUT THEN gina sees him outside and runs to him and i think i screamed bc i was so relieved aslkjskl but their kiss was very cinematic and cute ♥️♥️

and omg on sunday night im sitting there trudging thru s1 like "yeah starting this might've been a mistake" and by friday im bawling my eyes out bc the story is ending 💔💔 sofia deserved the whole fucking egot and a golden globe too for that scene at the end. and i was SO invested in her acting career and like pleading with the show for her not to pass on it and stay at school but fucking genius that she is found a way to do both!!!

and i honestly didnt know what i wanted miss jenn to do like i was rooting for her both ways but of course she staaayed. and the show ended and it had the "skip credits" button and my sister was like "oh there's something after the credits?" and then i saw "for good" listed at the end of the songs and i screamed again. and was bawling again when everyone was singing that. who knew this silly little show would have such a death grip on me by the end???

so over all it was really very good and not a waste of time. i liked pretty much every character and it was just a lot of fun! would definitely watch it again

my favorite characters from the start were gina, miss jenn, carlos, ashlyn, and big red lowkey alskfjdskl. kourtney got up there in s2 and beyond. and i do really like ricky, ej, seb, they're my secondary faves. (kinda wish ricky had more to do bc aside from his parents, i feel like every single one of his issues had to do with a love triangle and i just wish the character was granted a little more texture) and the camp kids were good, they were fine, they're like third-iary faves. and the only ones i dislike are gina's mom and nini lol

and i wasnt like screaming over any ships but generally i liked them all except rini. ej and gina was cute, i liked ashlyn and maddox, i liked ashlyn and big red, carlos and seb probably were my faves if i had to pick, i liked kourtney with howie (wish we saw him again) and jet, and yes by the end i was rooting for rina they just won me over this season and were super cute and im glad they ended where they did ♥️

in the time it took to re-stitch maddox's wound, somehow, lily had escaped from her bonds. maybe she had a knife hidden, maybe the ropes were too loose. either way, not many of them really care, at least not more than they cared about maddox surviving, and miss jenn and mazzara swore they'd take care of it with a fire in their eyes, and miss jenn had glanced at maddox's wound as she spoke.

EJ wanted to go with them, as did nini and jet and everybody else, but ashlyn unfortunately had to turn down their offers to accompany them; it'd be fastest if they had just one horse rather than have a whole herd with them. jet was the hardest to say no to, and he shouted at ashlyn, but maddox pulled him to the side, talked to him, and hugged him. neither of their eyes were dry after that, and he finally (begrudgingly) agreed to let her go.

they tried to put maddox in front on the saddle, but she couldn't not-slump over and nearly tip off the horse, so it was decided ashlyn would go in front with maddox leaning on ashlyn, and the rule was that maddox had to keep her hands tightly wound around ashlyn so she wouldn't fall off.

which ashlyn was happy with. more than happy with.

(as it turns out, as much as she likes holding the outlaw's waist, she likes being held too. she'll unpack why she's blushing so hard at travelling on horseback with her later.)

as they're travelling (quickly, but not too quickly), ashlyn speaks, making conversation which forces maddox to reply, so she focuses on that rather so she doesn't pass out.

as ashlyn is replying to a question from maddox about childhood stories, maddox interrupts her.

"hey, ash...?"

and oh. maddox saying that name, in that breathy voice—she'll unpack the warm feeling in her gut later on. really, she has too much to unpack later on. she should keep a larger mental suitcase for what to unpack.

"mhm?" she asks, and it's a high-pitched hum.

thankfully, maddox seems to take notice. "you're... you're good. kind." maddox remarks, and it takes all of ash's willpower not to beam at the compliment. "and i..."

there's an audible moment of hesitation. all sound seems to have stopped.

"if i don't make it—" she starts again, and ashlyn immediately has to protest.

"you will—"

"if i don't," maddox says, a little more forcefully. "if i... if i don't make it to this village or the next one, then... can you please look after jet? i—i just... i need to make sure that..." her voice breaks. "that he'll be alright without me."

they get to the village. maddox has made ash promise things she never thought she would promise. she's told her jet's favorite foods and where the best place is to get them. ash remembers it all, even through all of the persistence that maddie will make it.

the village is back to how it usually was. people go about their day to day, with the saturday market in full-swing as maddie and ash made it in. some of the kids rushed over at the sight of ashlyn's return, cheering and calling her name proudly. she wants to say things and tell them about the adventure she's been on- but all that's running through her mind is maddox's name.

she takes the girl inside of the infirmary and finds the first doctor she can, telling her exactly what needed to be done. the doctor has a confused look painted over her face but begins to move them towards the one room they had free. as the doctor begins to do basic checks on maddox's wound, ash begins to finally relax.

"i told you it would be fine." ash tells her. sure, had she seen anyone else since getting there? no. but that didn't matter right now. nothing else mattered but right now.

maddox holds ash's hand and doesn't want to let it go. her grip isn't strong as it would've been days ago. its weaker. maddie is barely holding on anymore.

the doctor confirms she's about to start her work, and ashlyn doesn't dare stop her. the silence sits between all three in the room, and it seems they're all fine with it until the door opens- revealing cash caswell.

he holds a bright and welcoming smile for his niece with words spewing out about how much he missed her and how the town will never be the same without her. then he stops. he stares at maddox sat on the table, the wound, and then at ashlyn. "get her off the table. now."

the smile that was once on the mans face was gone. he was back to a look of business and determination. one that not many in the public saw. "she's injured. let her be-"

"now." he says it again, cutting ashlyn off from whatever she had to say in her defence. if ej was there, it would be a different scenario.

ashlyn lets go of maddox's hand and turns to fully face the man in front of her. maddie was getting this surgery. "cash. let her have the surgery. she could die-"

"someone like her doesn't deserve it." he spits back at her. it reminds ash of the conversation at the fire and again in the tent. oil and water. no. that's what cash thought. ash didn't need to think that.

"in that case, you can find yourself another sheriff." she says. maddox's ears perk up and she begins to slur something about ashlyn taking it back, but ash places her hand defensively over maddie's, which caused the girl to be too busy looking at it. what were those butterflies inside of her stomach? why was her cheeks feeling warm and going red all of a sudden?

"what?!" the man didn't know what he had expected, but it certainly wasn't this. what the fuck.

"i am not working for a mayor who cannot find the heart within him to respect those in need." she says, helping maddox off of the table slowly. "and that includes my uncle." ash says, glaring at cash.

he appreciates praise so much (i don't even mean this in a sexual way, he just needs so much reassurance that he's doing well)

when it comes to pda, he's good with hugs and holding hands but kissing in public makes him uncomfortable half of the time (but if his partner really wants to, all discomfort will go out the window)

he's one of those movie/tv watchers that will ask a lot of questions (even if everyone is watching for the first time), he has this in common with big red

he used to own a bunch of brand name sneakers but they were mainly for the caswell image so he doesn't wear them anymore

he either swears by candles or hates them with a passion

he used to want to be an astronaut as a kid (this is so out of left field) and he has definitely run around with an astronaut helmet on his head at one point in his childhood

It's been almost a full hour of you and Gina working on the project together. You both were focused on completing it, although neither of you can understand a damn thing.

“Do you know the answer for number two?", Gina asks, hoping her her prayers work so she can finish this assignment. Bad thing was you were struggling with the same question. “No, I'm on that question.", You say, your eyes glued to the paper, erasing the last few mistakes of the problem. You both thought being paired for this project would be good because of the cute study dates at Gina's house, yet both of you suck terribly at math. Gina sighs, even though it's always a dream come true that her secret date can come over without suspicion from her mother. Luckily Gina had a backup plan for in case this scenario happens.

“I'll text Kourt or Ashlyn if they have the answers.", Gina says, grabbing her phone from her back pocket. You took a brain break from the amount of math you had to learn in a day. Gina did too, looking at you with a tired look but a lovely smile. Looking back at her you adore her beautiful brown eyes, feeling sentimental at the promise ring you gifted her on Christmas. Feeling distracted upon Gina's polished nails you didn't hear her question.

“Are you wearing my shirt?", Gina asks, causing a flushed look upon your face. You thought she couldn't notice by the baggy gray sweatshirt you stole from EJ. But still the purple collar from the pink crop top was visible to Gina. “Oh...yea, you left it at my house last week and I ran out of laundry so I stole it.", You say, feeling happy but nervous. It was true you were too lazy to do any laundry but sometimes you loved the feeling of Gina's clothing. Her scent and her warmth were still connected to the shirt. When Gina leaves away from her acting gigs you cling onto her accessories, feeling apart of Gina when you miss her.

“Are you okay with that? Do you want me to take it off?", You ask, trying to take off your sweatshirt as if you had a spare shirt to change in. The pink crop top was one of Gina's favorites, she's been on a search for days trying to find it. All for it to end up being worn by her girlfriend who mostly wears baggy clothing. “No, it's okay. You can keep it on for now. But...", Gina says, pausing with a smile. You weren't catching on to her giddy smile and excited hands playing with yours.

“But what?", You ask so innocently. Gina smile has on a smile, holding in her question wondering what response you'll have. But from the big ass grin you had and not recognizing Gina's hands were close to your thigh she knows you'll be quite oblivious to her trap.

“Would you mind...taking off your sweatshirt?", Gina asks. You did as you were told and took it off, with Gina's help. Because of Gina's more feminine fashion sense you rarely borrow her clothes. Yet if you took a deep dive in her closet you can see five of your sweatshirt hung up and ironed. You felt a chill from your lower back after taking it off. You felt as if a part of you was stripped away as you usually don't sport the crop top fashion. You sit up awkwardly, feeling insecure about wanting to rock a shorter, and tighter shirt.

“Hey, you look like a rockstar in my shirt okay? I love it, and I love you.", Gina says, reassuring you of all your insecurities. Feeling comfortable in your skin you lean in to kiss Gina. You stop a few times before Gina closed in to create a delicate kiss. Leaning back you felt her touch wriggle around your sides, feeling a small probe. It was ignorable after the first few, but Gina relentlessly went harder to get a reaction out of you.

“GINA! GINAHEHEH!!", You say, giggling thru the kiss. You tried to take her naughty hands away but she fought back harder, and deeper against your side and hips. You tug from her but you felt her weight on you, continuing to attack you with tickles. “IT TICKLESHEHEHE!!", You say, laughing out loud with speaky fits of laughter.

“Yea you don't say.", Gina says, teasing you,“Honestly I didn't know how ticklish you were until now." She teases you as if she isn't tickling you almost everyday. It's a battle to get thru Gina's tickles. Her impeccable strength and quick fingers leave you helpless against her. “SYPPSTOPHAHAGAHA!!", The laugh gets louder, and now you start to understand the truth behind Gina's trickery.

You try to pull down the crop top to cover any piece of skin possible. It was no use, it was stuck on you for good, and exposed all the areas Gina was feasting on. “Aww what's wrong? You can't cover that cute belly?", Gina teases, having you in a smile you can't tame. You tried pulling up your sweatpants but you still felt Gina's pokes. You couldn't escape, especially not with Gina's nice lips on your tummy ready to blow raspberries. “EEEEHAHHAHAHA!!", You say, laughing while your hands turn into fists. They cover around your red face, laughing thru Gina's scribbles.

“I should let you wear my clothes more often. They seem to really fit you.", Gina says, still scribbling your tummy and dipping her finger upon your belly button. You laugh, still not budging against Gina pinning you down. For Gina to complain that sports aren't her thing she sure is strong. “I WON'T WEAR YOUR CROPTOPS HWHHWHE!!", You laugh, swearing you won't make this mistake again (but you will). Gina knows you will if she ever plans on leaving her whole wardrobe at your place again.

“STOPHAHAHHQHQ!!!", You say, laughing at the raspberries and tummy kisses she's giving you. But it all stops once Gina hears a car pull in at her driveway. She decided to go softer upon your tummy so her mother doesn't suspect any funny business.

A Caswell Apology

EJ got up off his very comfortable position on the couch and dragged his feet over to open the front door. Lately, he found it hard to find the motivation to do anything but sulk on his bed or couch.

He went over to open the front door, at first blinded slightly by the sunlight but then surprised to see his cousin at the door. She was shivering and bundled up in a coat, scarf, and gloves. He hadn’t really realized when summer had slowly transitioned into Utah’s typical cold fall weather. Huh, had it been that long since EJ stepped outside his house?

“Oh Ash! Hey, come in.”

Ashlyn smiled at him graciously before stepping into the house, taking off her shoes and many layers.

“Um, it’s a surprise to see you here” EJ mumbled awkwardly, “My parents aren’t really home”

Ashlyn’s heart broke at the fact that EJ assumed she was at his place for his parents and not for him. She really needed to fix things with her cousin.

“No actually, I’m here for you”

EJ tilted his head slightly in confusion. Ashlyn sighed, trying to form a proper apology. But she couldn’t at the moment so she just threw her arms around her cousin, pulling him in for a tight hug. A hug that she should’ve given him months ago, at the beginning of the summer. EJ blinked before reciprocating as he tried to make sense of why his cousin was so troubled.

“Ashlyn, hey. What’s wrong?”

“EJ I’m… I’m so sorry!” she blurted out as her eyes glossed over with tears.

“Sorry? Whatever are you sorry for Ash?”

Ashlyn had broken out into intermittent sobs so EJ pulled her to the couch with one hand behind her back as he massaged her to try and calm her down.

“I’m such a horrible… cousin!” she said in between sobs, “I completely neglected you this whole summer when you needed me the most! I cant believe I didn’t realize- And after everything you do for me!”

EJ looked at her sadly. While he didn’t want to admit it, he had been lacking in his favorite confidant and counselor or a cousin this whole summer. Although he had Val by his side to keep him sane, Ashlyn knew a lot about the relationship he and his father had which he hadn’t told anyone. But if EJ ever felt neglected, he definitely did not show it.

“Hey, hey, look at me. You are not a horrible cousin Ashlyn. You had your own things going own this summer, with Maddox and Val and stuff” EJ spoke softly, squeezing her hand.

Ashlyn chuckled, “Why are you like this Eej?”

EJ tilts his head away from her, confused at her comment.

“Why are you so nice?” she blurts out exasperately. “You make excuses for people’s actions towards you even if they don’t deserve it. You put everyone’s needs above everyone else. You forgive too easily. Eej this why your dad takes control of your life! This is why you and Gina-“

EJ raises his eyebrows, letting go of Ashlyn’s hand. She immediately stops herself, looking at him concerned. A wave of guilt washes over her as she scrambles to stop EJ from punishing himself for the downfall of his relationship.

“I didn’t mean that… you were not- are not why Gina broke up with you.. it was“ she looks at EJ’s eyes avoiding hers and takes his hand in hers, “either way, she didn’t deserve you Eej.”

EJ looks up at her with shock in his eyes

“Ash, she’s your best friend”
“And you’re my cousin”

He looks at her dumbfounded as Ashlyn continues.

“I know she’s my best friend and my roommate but that doesn’t mean she can’t make mistakes. And the way she treated your relationship wasn’t right. I mean I can’t even imagine what it would feel like if Big Red strung me along in a relationship while he had feelings for someone else. I should’ve realized that. I shouldn’t have…” she looks up at him sadly, “I shouldn’t have yelled at you that day during rehearsals. And in front of everyone, too.”

“I forgive you”

Ashlyn looks up at him, “Really?”

“I do”

“Thank you, Eej”

Ashlyn wraps EJ in a hug, as he hugs her back with a soft smile on his face.

“Now what do you say we go out for some thai food? I could use a trip to the other side of this door” he joked.

Ashlyn chuckled, “Yeah you kinda lost touch of society in these last couple months. Plus it would be nice to spend some time with my favorite cousin”

“Let me take a quick shower and I’m all yours, Ash”

Ashlyn smiled at him as he got up off the couch. As he was walking back upstairs he stopped at the foot of the stairs with a slight smirk on his face. Without turning to look at her he said, “maybe then you can fill me in on your little ‘discovery’ with my good friend Val?”

“Eej!!” she exclaimed, blushing furiously as he laughed running upstairs. Ashlyn shook her head with a smile on her face, proud to see her cousin’s obnoxious yet charming self back. And she knew then that no matter what, they would be okay.

Favorite thing about them: So this might sound a little like Kourtney’s, but I promise I see them as two very distinct characters. I really love Ashlyn’s ability to unapologetically be herself. She knows herself inside and out and is so willing to go the extra mile if it is for the sake of authenticity. Integrity seems to be a common theme for her throughout the seasons. Kourtney is more about self-discovery whereas Ashlyn is more about knowing who she is already and not letting outside sources shock that system.

Least favorite thing about them: I know a lot of people were “bugged” by her season 3 but honestly she didn’t really bother me. The only time I remember getting frustrated with her was in s2 when Gina was obviously going through something and she had that line “it’s not that serious”. I have heard other people say this before and it is so invalidating. Nothing irks me more than someone thinking because they’re fine, everyone else should be too. Even writing about it now gets me heated 😂

Something I expect from them season 4 (if applicable): I talked about this before, but I very much could see the show going in a “Ashlyn accepting herself/queerness” s4 type of vibe. I think she and Red could break up so she discovers herself, but Maddox takes that as Ashlyn wanting to get with her. So Ashlyn is like “I meant time for myself… play the field ya know” but the whole season ends up being Ashlyn not being good at playing the field and Maddox pining/always being there for her. So then the last episode we either get Madlyn endgame or Ashlyn accepting herself/pursuing single life and hinting towards a future of them as endgame.

Random Headcanon: When Ashlyn comes back from CSL, she tells Red that she’s queer and then they spend the majority of their time checking out boys and girls together (with Red’s uncanny lip reading)

Unpopular Opinion: I love Redlyn and Madlyn equally. I think they both could be good endgames and I would have been happy with the show going either way.

Song I associate with them: “Home” from Beauty and the Beast. I know it’s technically in the show, but I was listening to a Broadway version of it and all I could think of was Ashlyn Caswell. That performance could have won Emmy’s it was so well done. I sob in that scene every time (especially her just hugging Gina without any words, but those unspoken words were enough to redeem their relationship… TEARS)

Madlyn headcanons!

-Ashlyn calls Maddox Bub

-when everyone goes back to camp the next year, Ashlyn takes the bunk Maddox’s bed is on so that she can hold hands with her from the top bunk, and she starts writing her little notes and sending them down to her with a string. Maddox makes them a little mail box out of the wood she uses for sets so that she can send notes back. (They paint the mail box like Carl and Ellie in up)

-Ashlyn gets one of those shirts that says “I don’t need google, my girlfriend knows everything” and Maddox gets them both shirts that say “if lost return to Ashlyn” and “I’m Ashlyn” like that cute old couple with shirts that said “if lost, please return me to Dee” and “I’m Dee”

-Ashlyn says I love you first, and Maddox is so stunned she literally can’t get any words out and had a panic attack cause she wants to say it back but didn’t know what to do on the moment. She ends up asking for tips from Big Red, who is more than happy to help, and she ends up going backstage at the barn at camp and working the stage managers panel to drop a note on a string

(like they would do in the honey comb) where she tells her she loves in the note. (Including that Bug Red helped, cause who else could’ve inspired that -after all his little things like the light up sign, who else was gonna help her think of something that cute-. everyone is waiting outside and being nosey -in a sweet way- to their cute moment)

-Madlyn goes on double dates with Big Red and Andy, -I’m thinking Bandy or Brandy for their ship name, idk. Do we know if they have one and what it is?)

-Maddox becomes good friends with Big Red and bc they’re both neurodivergent they have a sort of symbiotic understanding in certain things. Big red knows all the best spots in school to go for quite. when Maddox gets overwhelmed for the first time around him he takes her to one of his spots, and some time afterwards he shows her where they all are in case she’s in a retain area of the school and needs one

-Maddox is ace and Ashlyn isn’t but she doesn’t necessarily need anything more than to have Maddox by her side and she doesn’t mind going her whole life without that side of a relationship as long as she has Maddox.

(Maddox eventually voices her worries about that when she tells Ash that she’s asexual and subsequently tries to avoid her -Ash is too good at knowing her girlfriend and finding her in a room full of people to not track her down to talk about why she’s avoiding her- it goes very well but Maddox can’t promise her reaction to stress won’t always be her running away and trying to avoid the person or thing causing it)

-For their one year anniversary, Ashlyn gets Dewey Wood to keep the camp running late (they keep it open for field trips and events during the year until camp over the summer) and she gets EJ as Val to drive them to Cali and sets up a movie night where they watch Maddox’s favorite Disney Channel original movie, Camp Rock 2 (the final Jam)

-after opening night Maddox’s mom asks why the hell she put a chunk of a tree in her room until she see’s what’s on it and they have a cute moment where Maddox gets to tell her mom Ash is her girlfriend offically. Her mom’s just happy Madison is out of the picture (she didn’t know what it was but she never liked Madison), but she’s so happy for her cause Maddox has been unknowingly gushing about Ash for weeks.

-When Maddox tells Ashlyn she’s autistic, Ashlyn does some research and gets her a little stuffed animal with the weighted beads inside it, (you can decide what animal cause I couldn’t pick between a d purple triceratops-which is what I have- and a raccoon -this one feels very Maddox I can’t explain why-) (Maddox likes the pressure of it on the side of her face for some reason)

-one of the first times she was there when Maddox was stressed and feeling overwhelmed and had darted to of the the nearest places big red had showed her, Ashlyn went after her and turned off the lights and sat with Maddox on the floor. (Eventually Maddox leaned against Ashlyn and fell asleep from being drained)

-The Balloons, sat in Ashlyn’s room until they deflated, and after that until Gina convince her that they needed to go because they were literally taking up space on her floor just sitting in their original spot. Ashlyn compromised and kept one folded in her drawer (including the note from Madison about how the way she talks about Ash is the way people talk about someone when their falling for them)

image 1: I just think it's funny that rina and rini are compared so much when in my humble opinion rina was MADE for each other. everything in the first three seasons was set up. rini walked so rina could fly.

image 2: imo, the rini and rina comparisons are 🙅🏼‍♀️ not valid because two completely different people, completely different times, completely different relationships yet there are similarities but who lasted longer? who's more intentional and more pure and more everything? rina. thank you.

image 3: tangled is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies ever and flynn rider is my dream guy and comparing them to rina just makes my heart happy. both of their love is so pure and so wholesome it just 😍😍

image 5: okay I love this one because a) rina chemistry is ON POINT like the soulful stares I'm sorry but b) ASHLYN. she is Gina's sister. her best friend, dare I say it? ash has probably heard so much pining and complaining from Gina about Ricky being dumb, being ignorant, not realizing his feelings or how he was ignoring and hurting her at the time. Ashlyn is Gina's number one confidant, in my mind. and so to have her recognize their look and know, immediately, what is going on is so special to me. so shout out to Ashlyn too!! 💕

I'm sorry, thirty seconds into meeting each other and one walks away with a lasting impression of unremarkable dam that girl was cool and the other walks away with a gut instinct of maybe this is where I find where I belong. and the way they pulled each other closer UNINTENTIONALLY pulls my heartstrings 💗 and also, the way Gina entered the theater program looking for a home. for a family. and got so much more than she bargained for, and while she did find her friends in Ashlyn and Kourtney and Carlos she also found her home (a sacred kind of home 😌) in Ricky. and while Ricky walked into theater for ulterior motives he ended up finding that home and that family too. and to get all that and more from a minute and a half conversation with someone you've never met before is pure romance to me. watch out Romeo and Juliet 😜

image 7: I loved how Ricky and Gina got closer over season three. because while they started out awkward and near strangers because of ej and everything Ricky had/hadn't done over the course of the last semester you could tell. both of them wanted it back, badly. and they fought for it because you can't deny the incredible chemistry and the incredibly feelings and friendship they have for each other. season 3 was so special in the way you can see them grow closer all the while dealing with their own drama. because even in the darkness of each others problems Ricky and Gina have always managed to find their way back to each other - their light. 💡

image 8: for the longest time I didn't understand the point of "say yes to something that scares you." and really, it was Gina all along! Ricky was absolutely terrified of what his feelings for Gina truly meant (doesn't he say this at some point) and also terrified of losing her if she didn't feel the same. he knew it was going to be hard and he knew he was going to have to fight for it and he knew it was going to be the biggest change, the biggest curveball, life was possibly going to throw at him. but he said YES. he said yes to all that, to taking risks, to exploring something unknown and unexplored before, and that is so so special because while Gina didn't scare Ricky, the idea of her - of rina - did. of what they could be. of what they could become. and after their journey of the ups and downs and lefts and rights and all that life had to throw their way, he said yes. Gina said yes. and I love the way they conquered everything in season four together.

A/N II: My writing style in this isn’t my favorite but I never realized how hard it would be to do hsmtmts as a series fic. I still love the plot though so I’m going to see it through but serious thank you to all the readers that enjoy this story because I’m honestly not sure about my own writing here.

“What’s this?” you asked in the morning when you left Honeycomb to see Ricky at the door with a cherry popsicle from the food hall. 

“They don’t have smoothies here and I’m pretty sure the nearest McDonald’s is twenty miles from here.” 

You sighed. “I’m guessing I’m not Anna or Elsa.” 

“Sorry.”

“What did you get?”

“Kristoff,” he said, not quite looking at you. 

“Really?!” 

Ricky stood at the door for a moment after you ran back inside. You came out with an instant camera around your neck. Taking Ricky’s hand, you practically pulled him towards the cast list. Yep, there you were as the ensemble. But Kristoff was a big deal. Ricky gladly let you move him to stand next to the cast list so you could take a picture. You turned after feeling a tap on your shoulder. 

“Morning, Val,” you said quietly.  

“I know casting directors don’t have to justify their choices but I feel like I should explain.”

“You don’t have to. I know I’m shy but I’ve been in the professional program since I was nine, I’m used to not getting parts. Just wasn’t for me. Or it was but someone was better. I can never remember how Bennet says that phrase.” 

“Well, I love the attitude. But, no, this one I do. You were honestly one of my considerations for Anna or Elsa but paired with Gina and your voice is too light to be Elsa. And you both are amazing dancers but you played Clara s—”

“Playing the lead cost me the lead?” You asked in confusion. 

“No. Well, yes. But I want to use your ballet in the show. So you couldn’t be Anna. You did bring your ballet stuff like all the years before right?” 

“I have a sneaking suspicion I’m playing a personified snowflake.”

Val clicked her teeth while giving you finger guns before walking away. You had to laugh. You turned back to Ricky to take another picture. Gina and Kourtney were dragged into your picture. They all smiled largely. You handed each of them a polaroid that they held like a porcelain doll. Ricky took your camera from you. 

“I heard Val. You need a picture too, Prima.” 

“What’s Y/N doing?” Ashlyn asked. “It says we’re both ensemble.”

“Is it playing a person?” Carlos asked, still salty he was Olaf after being Lumiere.

“A snowflake,” you answered. 

Ricky held up the camera. “A very special snowflake… That came out…”

“Just take the picture, Ricky.” 

You were fighting everything in you not to laugh. He handed you the picture and your camera back. You agreed to show him around the camp while waiting for the hours to pass until the campfire. He had seen the entire camp by lunch time. Instead of eating in the food hall, you and Ricky ate on the pier of the lake. 

“So why is it called Shallow Lake if this giant thing exists?” He asked as he took a bite of his sandwich. 

“It used to be a lot bigger than this way before it became a camp. It’s also not nearly as deep as it looks. Almost everyone can touch the bottom, you might need to be on your tippy toes but still… Hey, you don’t mind if Gina and Jett join our log, do you?” 

“No but wouldn’t Gina be with EJ?”

“He’s working on the script tonight cause of the read-through tomorrow. It’s kind of eating up all his time so I told Gina to just hang out with us and try to forget about it for a bit.” 

“Well, I’m totally fine with them joining.” 

You both started to head back to your cabins to get stuff for the campfire. It was supposed to be a night to sleep out in the woods so you advised Ricky to bring a sleeping bag or find a tent buddy. The two of you met back up at the actual site. You went to your favorite log right in front of the fire. The large brooding presence behind you was clearly Jett. Without looking, you handed him a blanket. 

“You could try to look a bit more enthusiastic… Hanns.” 

Jett just sighed. 

“That’s a big deal! Ricky, please tell Jett playing Hanns is a big deal.” 

Jett didn’t really seem to care if the message came from someone other than you. You decided to drop the matter for now. Ricky was pleasantly surprised when you sat in between him and Gina. He honestly thought you would sit by Jett. He didn’t know what was going on between you two but Ricky wasn’t sure if you even lit up that much with him and Gina. 

“This is Maddie’s favorite time,” you said as you dropped your head onto Ricky’s shoulder. 

Maddox gave you a smile before turning her attention to the other campers. You weren’t kidding about this being her favorite night. She loved scaring people with the story of the woman in the woods: Susan Fine of Shallow Lake. Despite hearing the song that started the story, you still tapped your foot as EJ and Maddox sang it. EJ disappeared back into his tent as soon as it finished. Maddox stood up to walk around while speaking, she felt it really enhanced the story. You listened intently so she would always have someone to look at in case she felt the others weren’t paying attention. 

“And what Susan Fine when she wandered out here by herself?” 

“Corbin Bleu’s helicopter?” Jett half asked, half stated. It earned a light round of laughter from the others. 

Maddox stumbled over her next lines. “N-no. She was out in the woods for so long that she never came home. And it was so long ago that she still roams to this day lost, hungry, and angry.” 

“You guys, am I Susan Fine?” 

“You are pretty angry dude,” Ricky joined in on the joking. “Like all the time.” 

The laughter died when Maddox got visibly upset. Her scary story time was turning more into campfire laughter than anything. She stormed off, making you and Jett look at each other. You tilted your head but Jett just looked away. With scary story time effectively over, everyone started to retreat to their tents. You stayed at the fire with Ricky while Gina and Jett both left the log. 

“We have all the stuff for s'mores. Gadget kind of stormed off before handing them out. You want some?” 

“Sure but first I promised Carlos I’d help him scare Kourtney.” 

“Well, I will be here, eating a s’more and acting like I know nothing.”

Ricky patted you on the shoulder before walking off. You weren’t sure how they were going to scare Kourtney but you were positive it was going to be elaborate. It must have worked according to the screaming you heard minutes later. Ricky came bounding back in a fit of laughter. He accepted a s’more and dropped back down on the log. 

“Wow, it’s quiet without everyone out here,” he said as he reached for a bottle of water. 

“Yeah, a little too quiet.”

“Don’t tell me you’re scared?” 

You rolled your eyes. “Oh, you wish, Ricky. I just meant usually you can hear the other campers doing stuff. I guess everyone called it in early tonight.”

“Or Susan Fine got them.”

“I’ve been hearing that story for seven years in a row. You can’t scare me with it.” 

“Are you sure you’re not scared? Because my heart is racing.” 

Ricky grabbed your hand and placed it flat against his chest. You felt his slightly fast heartbeat underneath your palm. After a few moments, you pulled away with a scoff. He wasn’t going to prank you like he and Carlos just pranked Kourtney. You refused to get scared. Ricky smiled as you bit into another s’more. This was the first proper alone time he had with you in a while. And while it wasn’t the park and milkshakes, this was definitely just as good as Midnight McDonald’s. 

“You’ve got some chocolate right… Here, I’ll get it.” Ricky’s thumb gently wiped at the corner of your mouth. 

“This is why I don’t eat these often. That and Jett refuses to even look at marshmallows. How do you hate marshmallows?” 

Ricky’s hand faltered. Right, Jett was a thing. Potentially? You looked up at the sky after finishing your last s’more. Ricky looked up for a little bit before looking back at you. 

“What if we slept out here? I think I’ve only slept under the stars twice in all my years of camp.”

“Why not?” 

The two of you grabbed sleeping bags from your tent and went back to the campfire area. Sleeping under the stars proved more peaceful than either of you thought because you didn’t wake up until you heard singing. 

“Is that Sharpay?” you asked a bit groggily. 

Ricky sat up straight. “Sharpay song… Carlos’ voice. I think we might have missed something important.” 

“Well as long as we aren’t late to rehearsal, I think we’ll live. Speaking of which, we don’t have much time to get ready.” 

You both jumped out of the sleeping bags and began the brief walk back to the main camp area. While you were changing into proper clothes after taking a shower, Maddox was lovely enough to tell you that Carlos’ singing was because they were trying to impress Corbin Bleu. Well, the plan was to impress Corbin Bleu. His helicopter hadn’t arrived at the time they thought it would. You couldn’t care less about that and were actually kind of glad that you slept in. 

The more you thought about the documentary, the more it sounded like a bad idea. If you had only looked closer at the release forms but you assumed it was the typical release forms for when Camp Shallow Lake wanted to film campers for promotional videos. Your goal with the documentary was to not bring much attention to yourself. If you were in it then you were in it. But you wouldn’t go out of your way to garner Corbin or his cameraman’s attention. There were enough stars at camp who could do that. 

“You clean up nicely, Mr. Bowen,” you said as you entered The Barn. 

“Back at ya.” 

“What is Val having us do?”

“Stretch and a compliment circle. I think we got the compliment part out of the way.” 

“We are such overachievers.” You started to stretch properly. 

The stretching circle could have been comforting if it wasn’t for the fact EJ was circling you all like a hawk while he read the script over and over again. You weren’t sure why he was so nervous. This might have been his first time directing but it wasn’t like the cast was full of newbies. If he thought this was hard, he should see a week of classes with the Guppy Troupe. Eventually— and hopefully soon— he would get over the perfectionist director persona he seemed to have randomly adopted. 

Corbin and his cameraman came marching through the doors. You weren’t sure how it was possible that they had more enthusiasm in the morning than the entire cast combined. He started walking past each of you one by one. You snickered when it looked like Ricky tried to get a hug that was rejected when Corbin didn’t even pay attention. He gently pushed you but that didn’t stop you from snickering again. As you all gathered in the friendship circle to give light back massages, you looked over to where Corbin and his camera guy were talking. The camera dude gave you weird vibes. You weren’t sure why he just seemed odd. Corbin was kind of weird too, though. Maybe that was Hollywood for you? 

He had some odd advice to try and pull emotions out of people. At one point he suggested that Kourtney and Gina use their real life to inspire. The idea itself made perfect sense except the example he gave was asking if they both liked the same guy. You and Ricky laughed off to the side. Gina and Kourtney had completely different tastes in men. Also how pretentious of Corbin to assume they both liked the same boy, what if it was a girl? Not with those two but he didn’t know them to know that. You laughed even harder when it was suggested that Carlos was the guy. His face deadpanned. 

“Yes, that’s me. The notorious womanizer of the group. Somehow pulling all the ladies I show no interest in.” 

The cameraman— Channing— turned the camera away from the two girls and focused on you and Ricky since you two had been laughing. He got an extra tight shot to really highlight that you were resting your head on Ricky’s shoulder. As an ensemble member, you didn’t need to look at the script for lines. If you guys weren’t singing then you weren’t speaking. So there wasn’t much else to do but just listen to everyone else. Ricky held up a hand slightly. 

“There’s no drama between any of us. We’re all just really good friends.” 

EJ agreed. “This is a pretty drama-free zone.” 

Corbin gave a forced smile. “Okay let’s just move on. You were at Kristoff’s part.” 

“Hey, my ice,” Ricky read. He poked your cheek. “That’s you.” 

“That’s me.” You did spirit fingers, making the others chuckle. Val had let everyone know the extra role you were taking to really make the show next level. 

“Kristoff picks up his bag of ice while Anna and Hans are oblivious,” Val read the stage directions. 

Gina picked up. “I’m sorry, so sorry… Jett’s line is next.” 

You lifted your head from Ricky’s shoulder. “He’s not here?” 

With a sigh you got up from your chair. Channing kept the camera on Ricky who just kept watching you. Maddox grabbed your arm before you left the doors. 

“Why do you still try with him?” 

“Maddie…”

“Go, fine, go find him.” 

You looked around the entire camp multiple times. Either he was actually lost or was oddly good at evading you every step of the way. But it wasn’t in Jett’s nature to avoid you. He might’ve ignored you but that was after you sat next to him. He never got up to leave and he never purposely tried to make you leave. So where the hell was he? You gave up looking but told Dewey who was going to call someone. Stomping your way down a small hill, you found Ricky and Gina practicing lines. Wow, you didn’t realize you had taken up that much time looking for Jett.

“Y/N!” Gina called out, holding up a piece of paper. 

Ricky tried to grab it from her but she stepped out of the way in time to hand you the paper. The words Ricky’s Bucket List were plastered at the top. The first idea that immediately caught your attention was hug a celebrity. 

“Is this why y—”

“Gina already laughed at me on your behalf.” 

“I wasn’t going to laugh… Say yes to something that scares you?” 

“Was agreeing to date Lily not scary enough?” Gina asked. 

“Will you two leave me alone?”

You linked arms with Gina. “Come on, G, let’s go find a space rock so Ricky can complete his dream of walking on the moon. 

She threw her head back in a fit of laughter as the two of you left Ricky to keep practicing his script. It was important to get ready for movie night anyway. You were glad to have missed the rest of rehearsal with Corbin and Channing. You tried to fill Gina in on all the details of how everything worked at camp including movie night and which popcorn flavor was worth it. The movie was supposed to be High School Musical 3 but apparently Gina had asked Val to change it. 

“I’m not trying to say anything to anyone but I think you could help Kourt,” Gina said as you kept walking. “I think it’s anxiety maybe.”

“I’ll keep an eye out for her but asking Val to put on her comfort movie was a great idea.” 

To make sure Kourtney felt comfortable, you and Gina left Ricky and EJ to share a blanket and shared with her instead. Of course, Gina still took the side that put her next to her boyfriend. Kourtney seemed to feel calmer as she ate popcorn and watched Camp Rock. Almost all your attention was on the movie. The rest of it was thinking about your individual rehearsal with Val tomorrow. It was necessary that she and EJ split responsibilities to get the show done in time. That meant you needed private time to figure out what she wanted from you as a snowflake/ice block. 

All you knew of Val’s plan so far was that you would be there for Kourtney’s Let It Go number to help with the magical effects and then you were doing a little bit of Carlos’ In Summer and then dancing with Ricky because Kristoff’s entire personality was that he loved his reindeer and ice. It wasn’t nearly as intense as ballets at the Saltwater, especially the upcoming one, but you were still nervous all the same.

Ricky left movie night a bit early, not feeling up for watching the mini talent show afterwards. He wanted to be up early to work on lines and enjoy more of the nature side of camp. The boy nearly jumped out of his skin when he opened the door to the cabin and saw Jett laying in bed while reading a book. 

“You’re back?” 

“Look, I already got a lecture from Val. I don’t need one from you.” 

“We were counting on you dude. Y/N spent the entire day looking for you.” 

“She always does that, it’s kind of our thing I guess.” 

Ricky scoffed. “That’s a bit messed up to do to someone who cares about you. I get it grumpy sunshine is like your thing but you could’ve even tried to tell her you weren’t gonna be there instead of wasting everyone’s time.” 

Jett closed his book and propped his head up on his hand. “Just a question. Are you actually upset because I took off or does this somehow have to do with Y/N?” 

“Whatever.”

“Great comeback.” Jett went back to his reading.

Ricky ignored him for the rest of the night. It continued into the morning, even when Jett reluctantly stood next to him as they walked to The Barn. You weren’t there yet, probably listening to the music and trying to figure out a dance to it. It wasn’t like you were really needed until lunch. This morning was supposed to be Kristoff and Anna work mainly. Ricky took a seat in one of the chairs set up in the middle of the room. Carlos, Val, and EJ were standing in front of everyone with creepy smiles and a posterboard presentation on a stand.

3. wish we could be honest by steambend: When Princess Gina was betrothed to her neighboring country's Prince EJ, she had to uproot her life and move to the Caswell family palace, where Gina progressively felt more and more out of her depth. The only thing that kept her afloat was her assigned guard, Ricky, who Gina couldn't help but feel inexplicably drawn to.

Of course, her relationship with Ricky was only one of friendly companionship, and not at all romantic in any way. Right?

She meets his stunned eyes. “When was the last time we talked about anything except Nini?”

5. Everybody Talks by CanaryWidow: “We should get our cover story together and establish some rules,” Gina stated. “Like they did in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.”

Ricky furrowed his brow. “To All the What?”

Gina rolled her eyes. “Ok, we definitely need to do a movie marathon date, because you literally have no taste.”

6. homesick (for you) by spider_eli: This fic starts in the summer following Beauty and the Beast and things between Gina and Ricky have never been weirder. Ever since Gina stood her ground at Carlos' Quinceañero, the pair haven't really been acting like friends. Gina's founds new friends in the other theatre kids (and more), while Ricky has spent his time figuring himself out. But they can't ignore that things feel unfinished between them...

title inspired by the avett brother's lyrics, "i have been homesick for you since we met."

7. A Little More of You by spider_eli: Gina Porter and Ricky Bowen have been at each other's throats their entire lives. The only thing they have in common is their best friend, Howie Lawson. But something changes when they start spending more time together.

Because I've been tearing through Dawson's Creek during the HSMTMTS hiatus and Joey and Pacey really set the bar. This'll just be little Jacey scenes but with Rina instead !! It's very dialogue heavy because if you've ever seen Dawson's Creek.... yeah.

8. pluto projector by adhdsoras: "What… what is Gina to you, Ricky?" Red's voice was barely above a whisper, his hesitation clear as he stopped in his tracks, chewing on his nails, his eyes finding interest on his shoes. Ricky swallowed thickly, his heart pounding in his chest, confused and distraught by the question more than anything else. Silence grew between them as he struggled to find the right words, the air hanging cold and thick around them. He opened his mouth but no words came out, his foot tapping more intensely against the concrete wall.

"I have a girlfriend," He managed to croak out the words, finally, after minutes of struggle, "I love my girlfriend."

9. please don't say you love me by adhdsoras: EJ rejected Gina's invitation to be her date to camp prom, much to Ricky's surprise. So, when Gina comes up with a plan to get back at her boyfriend, who's Ricky to say no to her?

He would do anything for her, even if it meant breaking his own heart.

10. waiting room by mariiposie: 'The first time it happened, she said, ‘I couldn’t sleep,’ and Ricky said, ‘Neither could I,’ and she sat down at the end of the boardwalk next to him, letting her feet make ripples on the sleeping surface of the midnight lake, and said nothing more. This wasn’t allowed to happen; so they said nothing at all, until the sun came up, and two of a kind, they found their way back to their respective cabins. And they did not say another word of it until the next night, when Ricky found his way along the gravel paths to Gina’s cabin, and she’d been standing there, and he’d said, ‘We could do it again, if you’d like.’'

11. Answer Garden by busyheadinthedark: A note in a locker. A message from a known stranger. A teared up book page with smudged handwriting. A sticky note found by accident— or was it? Different ways in which they were contacted by the same person but they all ended up the same way.

12. Decline to answer by fandomwolfx: Gina must have walked around the whole of camp Shallow Lake at least three times now.

The tube of blue paint in her hand is starting to dry out from the relentless July heat and her boyfriend who insisted he wanted to wear some so that they could match is nowhere to be found.

Not that she should be surprised, EJ has been MIA for most of the camp so far too busy spending time with the other counselors which is… whatever.

Or, how did Ricky end up with that blue facepaint during 'It's On'?

13. plus one by bunnoon: after their individual breakups and years of on and off friendship, ricky and gina decide to team up and take on wedding season together by making a pact to be each other’s plus one to every wedding of the year. however, what they didn’t plan for was the feelings that arise along the way.

He finds himself on a writing retreat of his own design skipping out on duties as Lord and husband to Duchess Nini Salazar Roberts. He comes home to his entire world changing. Baroness Genevive Porter arrives in town and the world shifts on its axis again.
