luck be a (leading) lady | part 14.
[Posted 2023.08.12]
Summary: Y/N has always been a background character. That’s just life for some folks isn’t it? But what if she’s determined to not just be another member in the ensemble? What if someone helps her step into the spotlight in her own special way?
Warnings for the Series: a teeny bit of angst but mainly fluff
Pairing: ricky bowen x black!reader
Word Count: 3.0k
Previous Part | (Series Masterlist)
Tumblr media
Despite the documentary trailer coming out, the general public didn’t believe you and Ricky were together. According to everyone, the whole show was an act. A very entertaining act but an act nonetheless. Not that you or Ricky minded. With the increase in auditions and booking small roles, you wanted your personal life to stay personal for just a little longer. You told Gina that much as you helped her finish packing.
Her mom was back into so your roommate turned sister was officially leaving your house. Gina dragged her entire closet into your room so you two could pack up and watch a movie on the projector screen in your room.
“I can’t believe your moving. Seriously,” you said as you shoved her jackets into a box.
“You act like I’m leaving the state, I’m literally across the street.”
“Yeah, I can’t believe that old couple finally chose to live in a nursing home.”
You and Gina paused before you bursted out in laughter. It was really nice to have her stay near by. While you were friends with the rest of the drama club, Gina and Ricky were still your only close friends at East High.
“You know what I can’t believe,” Gina started. “That two of my best friends are leaving me next year.”
“Senior year. I still haven’t processed it yet,” you admitted.
A knock on the door caught your attention. Your dad was standing in the doorway with a plate of fruit. “My lovely senior and junior…”
You and Gina rolled your eyes.
“Gina, your mother wants me to remind you that she’d like you home by ten thirty and that you two can talk tomorrow at school.”
“Got it.”
“Thank you, here you guys go. Let’s try to finish packing before the night is over.”
“If you really want us to finish. Dad, you could he—”
The sound of your window opening made you all turn. You laughed as Ricky practically fell into your room. He jumped up with a quickness.
“Hi, Mr. L/N. Y/N, Gina.”
“Hello, Richard. You do know we have a front door, right?” you father pointed to downstairs.
“Yeah but since you guys said I’m allowed over any time, it’s not as much fun unless I’m going through the window.”
Your dad looked up at the ceiling. “I have clearly overstayed my welcome talking to a bunch of teenagers. Okay, Gina, home by ten thirty. Richard no sleeping in Y/N’s room but you are welcome to take any other room upstairs. Bed time is eleven, no negotiations. School’s tomorrow… I can’t believe my baby is a senior.”
“Dad, Dad, there’s plenty of time before I graduate. We don’t need to start crying now.”
“Oh, whatever.”
You chuckled as your dad left the room before focusing on Ricky again. He had no problem showing affection towards you with Gina in the room because she was the only person that knew you and Ricky were a real couple. She wasn’t exactly sure how she felt about being sworn to secrecy no matter the reason but she was still just happy to be let in.
Your boyfriend sat on the bed, actually helping you pack up Gina’s closet. “I wanted to give you something but I couldn’t really wait until tomorrow. Well, both of you, kind of.”
“What is it?”
“So, I’ve had this melody stuck in my head all day and it reminded me of Y/N.”
“Sap,” Gina muttered.
“I think it’s sweet.” You leaned over to give him a peck.
“Anyway, I know you don’t really write songs but you have an ear for music Y/N and Gina does write lyrics so I thought maybe we could work on this together?”
“Of course.”
“Okay.” Ricky stood up to leave. “I actually do have to get home. One of Dad’s only rules is bed by ten on the first day of school.”
“Seriously?”
He nodded. “Yep, it’s been a tradition since I started… and it is nine thirty so I do need to go.”
You gave him another kiss. “Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow… Oh! Did Lucille send you the filming schedule?”
“Yeah, I’m just glad the filming is here. Senior year away from East High would’ve been such a bummer.”
“I know right. Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
~~
You leaned against Ashylnn’s locker, chuckling as you watched Kourtney and Carlos take pictures with fans. It was weird to say you guys had fans.
“So what do you think, Y/N?”
“Hmm?” You focused back on Gina and Ashlynn.
“About Ash and Maddie giving each other relationship advice.”
You and Gina shared a look before you stood up straight. “I think that’s for Ashlynn to figure out but we need to figure out how to get to the drama club before we’re late for Ms. Jenn’s big announcement.”
Ashlynn’s eyebrows furrowed. “For me to figure out what?”
“Nothing,” you said with a laugh before grabbing her and Gina’s hands and leading them to the drama club.
You guys weren’t sure why Ms. Jenn called everyone in for a “surprise.” It was pretty obvious that the next play was going to be High School Musical 3. Without stupid Zacky Roy around to throw the Drama Club off their game, you guys were going right back to doing Disney TV shows for musicals. You just hoped that next semester you guys did Teen Beach Movie before you graduated.
You felt Ricky squeeze your hand once before you guys broke apart and left the drama room with everyone else to go to the Pep Rally. Staying lowkey was going to be so hard. You let Ashlynn and Gina walk in between the two of you on your way to the field.
“Can you believe auditions are this Friday? I need to pick a song,” Ashlynn said as she started searching through a list written down on her phone.
“What part are you going for Ash?”
“I’m thinking Kelsey or Sharpay. You?”
You shrugged. “Whatever doesn’t interfere with filming and my calculus homework. You know I’ve been demoted at Saltwater.”
“What?!”
You chuckled at your friends’ expressions. “Not like that. Bennet agreed that Principal dancer is too much to handle with school and filming so I’m only principal for the fall ballet since we’ve been rehearsing it before filming next month and then I’m just a first soloist for the rest of the time. It’s better this way anyway. This is the exact arrangement I’m going to having at Berklee. I’m thankful to get but my academic advisor sends me an email like every other day with updates. My inbox is dying.”
You guys sat down in your seats, finally moving to be next to Ricky.
“That still means we get to come watch you perform at Saltwater, right?”
“Yeah, you are looking at Coraline Jones in our fall production.”
Before your friends could celebrate you, the pep rally started much to your relief. You were still getting used to being the center of attention without losing the ability to breathe. Part of the reason you weren’t so prepared to be the lead in a feature film. A small film but still… The first Twilight movie was an indie film.
At least you didn’t have time to overanalyze that because the dude who played Coach Bolton was at the pep rally? You and Ricky rolled your eyes and sighed at the same time with the announcement of High School Musical 4 being filmed at your school. Just why?
Of course all the students were cheering no matter what, hoping that filming would mess with classes a little. You had a little fangirl moment when they announced one of the new stars of High School Musical 4. Mack and Dani.
Kourtney played Dani’s TikToks over and over again when you guys were at camp. Hopefully she could act because her TikToks seemed so nice. And Mack? Well you couldn’t help but squeal a little when they announced him.
Your friends looked at you causing you to laugh. “You don’t understand, I had one of the biggest crushes on him when I was little.”
“Me too!” Gina said with excitement. “Mark and Spark was my comfort show.”
“You know, he was supposed to be the first male lead in the movie I’m filming and my heart stopped until he cancelled of course.”
“Well now we know why,” Ashlynn said before focusing back on the stage.
You leaned your head on Ricky’s shoulder, having felt him tense up behind you. He relaxed when you grabbed his hand for a brief moment.
“You know I don’t mean anything by it. It was just a stupid celebrity crush,” you whispered.
“Celebrity crushes are still crushes.”
“Well then it was a stupid little crush. Is that better?”
“Yeah,” Ricky said with a squeeze of your hand.
You made a note to stay at Ricky's for a late dinner later after ballet rehearsal just to make sure he wasn’t still jealous. This relationship really was new territory for the both of you. But that would have to wait because now it was time for a second surprise in the drama room. You were getting real sick of surprises. And super sick of the security guard trying to block access to the drama room because of “filming”.
“Ahh!”
You all turned at Kourtney’s scream.
“Corbin Bleu?”
“Oh great,” Ricky muttered.
“Okay, okay. I deserve that a bit. But I am here to make amends. I know that documentary wasn’t what any of us expected.”
“Seb isn’t talking to me.” Carlos pointed out.
Ashlynn nodded along with him. “Yeah and Big Red is in Cairo for six months.”
“I hear you but we’ve found a way to make it up to you.”
“Uh, who’s we?” you asked with a raised hand.
You heard footsteps before you saw the people attached to the noise. You couldn’t believe it. Standing right in front of you was the original cast of High School Musical. Honestly, Corbin might have actually gotten you guys the best apology gift ever.
Featured extras in High School Musical 4? That was sick! So was everyone character development. You had to admit that you didn’t see Troy and Gabriella being in couples’ therapy… because you thought they would’ve broken up freshman year of college since they were such an on and off again relationship. The entire class was giggling uncontrollably at the prospects of being together on set.
Kourtney raised her hand. “Well, if the movie is going for authenticity casting a drama class to play Ms. Darbus’ drama class then Mack and Dani should consult us. The real life kids of East High.”
“This is why she’s the smart one,” someone said as you all high-fived.
Apparently, the OG cast thought she was brilliant as well because it didn’t take them any convincing. She was immediately assigned to Dani. You playfully shook her shoulders to let her know you were proud of her.
“Do we have any volunteers for Mack?” Lucas asked.
“Right like someone who grew up loving his tv show. Or two someones?”
You tried to back out of being Mack’s guide but it was too late. You were stuck co-guiding with Gina. All you wanted to do was focus on movie rehearsals, ballet rehearsals, your relationship, school, and drama club. That was a lot of things. Guiding Mack was not on your list of things.
You acted like that wasn’t the case when you went to go see the superstar, putting on your best smile. Your eyes went wide at an almost naked man getting his calf measured.
“Oh my,” you and Gina said at the same time.
Mack looked over. “Can I help you?”
You let Gina take over as you tried to look everywhere but at Mack, feeling embarrassed and more awkward than usual.
“We are so sorry. We are real students here, only one credit on IMDb so far but anyway, we were assigned to give you a hand.”
“Yeah, I’d love to know who assigned you to interrupt my costume fitting.”
“No. That was our bad.”
“Yeah,” you offered up. “If we had known you weren’t dressed we would’ve come way sooner before school ended… Soo-sooner because you’d have clothes on. Not whatever you l-look like you, like you’re thinking of. Oh my goodness.”
“Would you mind turning around?”
You and Gina looked at each other before doing just that. “That was probably the first thing we should have done.”
“Okay. So, I do have to ask,” Gina started. “Do you still keep in touch with the dog from the show?”
“There were seven of them and they all retired to a farm upstate.”
“Oh that’s so swee—”
“Uh, G,” you cut her off. “That means they aren’t, um, currently pr—”
“It means they’re dead.” Mack had put on a shirt so you guys could turn around. “The farm is heaven.”
“Well that ruined everything,” your friend muttered. “Okay, we’re going to leave now and we can all pretend we never met.”
“Oh, I’m way ahead of you.”
“Good luck on the movie, Mack. Hope you break a leg, literally.”
“Good luck with your lives, superfans.”
You felt your face get hot as you marched up to him. “Her name is Gina Porter and can I just say, I’m so glad High School Musical 4 took you in. Acting alongside you in Sweet Pea Americano would have literally killed me… G-Gina, why did I just say that?”
“I’m proud of you.” She swung her arm over your shoulder so you guys could leave. “Even with anxiety, you always stick up for your friends.”
“I think I’m going to pass out.”
“Come on, let’s go see if Ricky got a smoothie for us at the food truck.”
While you were mortified at your actions, Gina proudly recanted the entire story to Ricky who echoed her sentiments. You guys went you separate ways. There was no carpool with Gina today. Carlos called her over for an emergency meeting of the Finer Things Club at Kourtney’s house, leaving Ricky to drop you off at Saltwater. You guys stopped at a salad bar first so you could get some real food into your system.
“Oh, Gina finished the lyrics to the song.”
“Already?”
“You know her. Once she gets started on a mission, she can’t stop until it’s complete. Do you want to hear it?”
“Of course, do you have the lyrics on you?”
You handed Ricky your phone to look at the screenshots of Gina’s song journal. Your harmonies were rough and sometimes the melody fell off but the two of you had fun singing all the way back to the car.
“Are you sure you don’t mind picking me up?” you asked him as you leaned into the driver’s side window after getting your bags from the back of the car once you guys reached your destination. “Because we don’t get out till eleven and Mrs. Porter said it was fine for her to pick me up since Saltwater is between Kourtney’s house and ours.”
“It’s fine, baby, I like picking you up.”
“Okay. Oh, don’t forget. Gina’s driving tomorrow morning.”
“I can’t believe she got a car.”
“I can’t believe she got a license.”
You said bye one last time and headed inside for you ballet rehearsals. While you were dancing, Ricky was doing homework, and Gina was laughing as she got into Kourtney’s room. Ashlynn and Carlos were already there and Kourtney… well, she was meditating at the edge of her bed. While, Ashlynn had nearly forty missed texts from Maddox. Gina so had to tell you about that when you and Ricky came over for breakfast tomorrow morning.
Her smile faded at the announcement that Kourtney wasn’t sure about doing the school musical or not. She wasn’t sure if Dani was the best thing for Kourtney. She especially wasn’t sure when her friend suddenly became supper eager and chipper to answer her phone call. Kourtney put Dani on speaker after the others swore to be quiet.
“Hi, so I was studying you. Not in a creepy way but I’m really trying to get into character as a real East High drama student.”
Gina made a face when Dani suddenly stopped the speak pretty harshly to the driver taking her to the airport.
“Anyway, you’ve got that X factor, Kourt, and I want to help you grow your footprint. But I’ve been looking through your post and to be honest I’ve noticed something.”
“It’s the honesty for me,” Kourtney said with a nervous lilt to her voice.
“If I’m going to show you exactly what it’s like to grow an audience and you’re going to do the same for me as an East High student, I want you to tell me everything you know about Ricky Bowen.”
Gina bit her tongue as her other three friends stared at each other with suspicious looks on their faces. She got strange vibes for some reason but didn’t want to act on what could be nothing. Besides, she promised you two that she wouldn’t say anything to anyone. And how could she tell Kourtney not to mention Ricky to Dani if she didn’t ended up revealing something?
~~
You looked down at your phone to see a text from Ricky.
I’m still on my way, baby. Don’t worry, I’m stopped at a red light. I’ll be there in like 10 minutes. I wish your rehearsal didn’t end so late so we could’ve stayed up cuddling.
You smiled at the text before sending a little heart emoji, nothing that would require Ricky to look down at his phone after the light turned green. You ruffled around your bag to get your water bottle, reaching for your phone again when you felt the familiar vibration of a text. Another one from Ricky.
This red light is long. Do you want to get McDonalds after this?
You shook your head, deciding it was better to just answer him in person. A groan left you mouth when you felt the vibration again. That light wasn’t going to be red forever, if he was texting while driving then you were going to scold him because that could seriously inju—
Why was Mack now following your Instagram?

post-season 3
Terri will freely admit that she wasn’t overly enthusiastic about her daughter suddenly deciding (with less than a month’s notice) to spend two weeks of summer at a camp run by her boyfriend and otherwise minimal adult supervision. Yes, a lot of it was because she (selfishly) wanted her daughter to spend that time with her after not being together for half a year, but she was also concerned on a more general level: across the country with no cell phones? The summer before her junior year? Terri would much rather she stay home, focus on SAT prep if anything, and prepare for her future—not go to some theatre workshop where she’s unlikely to learn anything of value.
It did help to find out that Gina has been cast as the lead in the first-ever stage production of a wildly popular Disney movie and will also be starring in the associated documentary. This is a novel experience, can go on her college apps and résumé, and really, who is she to judge when all expenses are paid in exchange for signing a few release forms?
Still, she misses the days she could hear about each rehearsal straight from the source instead of random teasers dropped on the Disney+ twitter account, and she especially hates that she has to work and miss Gina’s big debut. By the time intermission is called on the livestream, Terri (ever-so-grateful for the weekend off) is already en-route to California.
Terri pulls into the Shallow Lake parking lot and spots Gina immediately among the throng of campers checking out and saying their goodbyes. She’s grown at least an inch, Terri realizes with a jolt. Gina is nearly seventeen now, on the brink of adulthood, and the way she’s carrying herself now demonstrates a demeanor entirely different from the teenager she’d dropped off at MSY just a few months ago. Why does time always move so fast with these kids?
Gina whips around as soon as Terri slams the car door shut, as if she was able to hear it from all the way across the yard, letting out a loud squeal of delight that sends Terri’s heart melting before launching herself straight into her mother’s arms. Terri is instantly reminded of a five-year-old Gina doing the exact same thing at kindergarten pickup.
“Hey, sweet pea,” she whispers, returning her daughter’s tight hug. Some things never change.
“Mom? What are you even doing here? I thought you were closing on the house? Oh my god, I had no idea—"
“I finished all that yesterday, and since I have a free weekend, I thought we could take a mother-daughter road-trip back home – just like old times.” While their last few moves had been too far apart to drive, she and Gina used to spent nearly every school holiday or long weekend transporting their lives across state lines while eating their fill of fast food and pancakes, touring random obscure roadside attractions, and making some of their fondest memories.
Gina beams. “I’d love that,” she says, bouncing on her heels excitedly. “I finished packing, actually, so I just need to take care of one thing real quick and we can head out.”
Then she smiles big and wide again, an expression she saves for truly special occasions (like, apparently, 10 hours with her mother in a car), and quickly kisses Terri’s cheek. “Love you, mommy. Be back in a bit.”
Gina sprints off in the direction of, according to a nearby sign, a “Yurt Locker”. Strange name, Terri thinks. She doesn’t have a chance muse on it (or what the hell it even means) further, though, because someone bellows GENEVIEVE MARIE! so loudly that both Gina and Terri, now at least 20 feet apart, jump at the sound.
The source of the voice appears a second later—or at least Terri assumes that’s who the curly-haired boy with a shit-eating grin on his face now standing in front of Gina is, given her daughter’s currently crossed arms, flushed cheeks, and, surprisingly, equally playful smile. Terri eyes the boy curiously. Gina doesn’t give out her full name to just anyone and rarely allows anyone to use it (Terri can’t remember the last time she herself even said the word Genevieve, let alone added her middle name to the mix). But Gina seems entirely unfazed now, as if having this boy yell it for all to hear is a regular occurrence. Who is he?
Then she notices the acoustic guitar he’s clutching, and it hits her. Kristoff: Ricky Bowen.
It had been a while since Gina had mentioned Ricky in their weekly FaceTimes. His name had only ever come up in relation to Ashlen’s role of Belle in the spring musical, and even then, it was mostly to complain about his two left feet. If it weren’t for a panicked text conversation on Valentine’s Day (Gina’s teddy bear got lost in transit, long story), Terri would have entirely forgotten about him.
Clearly, not only has his dancing greatly improved this summer (if yesterday was any evidence), but so has his friendship with her daughter.
Ricky pulls out a set of keys and gestures to the parking lot, fanning his face with his free hand, and that’s when Terri realizes he’s wearing…a pink-and-blue snowsuit. Gina laughs and rolls her eyes at him, clearly teasing him about his ridiculous attire for an LA summer, but when he says something else, Gina suddenly shakes her head, pointing straight at Terri.
Terri gives a small wave to the kids, and Ricky immediately waves back excitedly.  Okay, then.
Turning back to Gina, Ricky says something else and Gina smiles shyly and nods. Terri watches as the pair hugs goodbye, a motion that is simultaneously so natural neither think twice about it—falling into a tight embrace that nearly lifts Gina off the ground—but so awkward when they separate that Terri can feel the tension from all the way over here. Okay, then, indeed.
Ricky meanders toward the bright orange bug almost double-parked in the last slot of the lot. Terri recognizes the car from her driveway last fall – but also remembers Gina mentioning that Ashlen’s boyfriend also drives an orange bug that the three of them and EJ would carpool to school in, leaving Terri to wonder which possibility is weirder: that Ricky and his friend got matching ugly vehicles together, or that Ricky transported his friend’s car across state lines for two weeks and his friend actually agreed to it.
There isn’t much she knows about Ricky Bowen, actually, except that he has an apparent penchant for nabbing lead roles out from under everyone else’s noses and—surprisingly—actually justifying those casting choices. Gina’s scene partners are often so dry she has to work double-time to make the chemistry believable. Last night, however, Ricky showed a level of talent that nearly matched her own daughter’s in the way he was able to hold the audience captive even without Gina on stage with him. There was one solo of his in particular that had actually caught Terri’s attention (she had taken the opportunity to answer some emails) when, right at the end, he suddenly directed the final line of the song away from the audience and into the wings: you’re what I know about love, he sang, straight to Ana. Straight to Gina. It was not only a genius move but one she doubted he was directed to do—he must have come up with it himself.
Still, something about him sets Terri on edge. Questionable decisions (seriously, snowsuit?) aside, he has the demeanor of a class clown, someone who stays while it’s fun but bolts when things get hard. It makes Terri uneasy, especially since it’s clear that this is someone Gina cares deeply about.
“Sorry about that.” Gina’s back, suitcases in hand, shaking Terri out of her reverie. “I had to tell Ricky I didn’t need a ride first.”
“Oh, I thought EJ was giving you a ride home,” Terri says, taking one of the suitcases from Gina.
A tense silence. “Mom, I told you we broke up, remember?”
“I know, sweetheart,” Terri quickly assures her. Gina had called early yesterday morning from Kourtney’s phone, relating the news with a quick “it was a long time coming, we’re still friends, prom was super fun otherwise, see you soon” and hanging up before Terri could even get an I’m sorry out. “I just assumed you’d keep the same arrangement since Ashlen and your other friends are there, too.” She winces. “I see how silly that sounds out loud, though.”
“Yeah.” More silence.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Terri asks gently.
Gina shakes her head no emphatically. “I told you, it wasn’t really a surprise. I’m fine.”
“Okay, okay, got the hint.” Terri laughs, sighing internally with relief when Gina gives her a (albeit watery) smile. She opens the car trunk and shoves the suitcase inside.
“So, why was Ricky wearing a snowsuit?” Terri asks as they settle in and buckle up, unable to keep the question to herself any longer.
“Oh, he wasn’t supposed to be at camp at all, and showed up without a ton of clothes, so he mostly borrowed from others I think, and got pizza all over his laundry yesterday, too.” she giggles slightly, then continues, “plus the guys dumped ice water on themselves last night and he put is wet towel on top of his open suitcase, like an idiot.” She says all this with the nonchalance of someone explaining 1+1=2, not…whatever she just said about sudden enrollment, pizza, and ice water.
“That doesn’t explain the snowsuit,” Terri says, now even more confused.
“Rumor has it he was supposed to go skiing with his ex? he didn’t say, though." Gina shrugs.
“that girl Jamie’s working with?”
“No.” Gina doesn’t elaborate.
“Well, regardless, he’s very talented,” Terri supplies. “I did enjoy that one ballad of his yesterday, the one with the guitar and lights.”
“Oh.” Gina smiles softly, almost to herself. “I liked that one too.”
Terri’s stomach twists, like they’re about to go barreling off a cliff they can’t see and can’t stop.
“Is he doing the fall musical as well?”
“I dunno. Probably. It’s his senior year, he won’t have many more chances.”
“I didn’t realize he’s a year ahead of you,” Terri says, surprised. “How are his college apps coming along?”
“Mom,” Gina groans. “It’s literally summer vacation, and believe it or not, I didn’t ask. He probably hasn’t even started thinking about them yet.”
“Fair,” Terri says, although, internally, she disagrees. if Ricky were truly serious about his future, he would have had his summer plans set in place long ago, and a solid school list by now.
I can tell you like him, Gigi, she thinks. And then, suddenly, I wish you didn’t.
It’s a strange thought, and a foreign one—Gina has yet to make a friend that Terri straight-up disapproves of.  What Ricky does with his life is really none of her business, and Gina’s a smart girl—she won’t go rushing into poor decisions even if her friends are walking bundles of chaos. Plus, from the little she’s seen, it’s clear he cares about Gina, too. Maybe as much as she does him.
But Gina in a relationship is…different. Gina in a relationship was more carefree, a little less focused. She begged to go to prom despite having an exam the next Monday, she shifted her summer plans around for a camp she showed no interest in before, and she prioritized FaceTimes and texting every night over reading or sleeping. there were no lasting negative repercussions for any of this, but if there was ever a time for Gina to conserve her extra energy for something worthwhile, it’s now.
Ricky a good friend, Terri decides. As friends, he keeps her grounded—but anything more than that? She’s just not sure.

sneek peek of my hsmtmts season 5 (madlyn edition) fic 😈
~
Lively Christmas music sounded from the living room as the Wildcats gathered around the tree at the Caswell house. Maddox was lazily sprawled on the couch with her head in Ashlyn’s lap as Jet showed off a new drone that he had just unwrapped, smiling excitedly.
“Okay Maddie, it’s your turn,” Ashlyn said, gently nudging her shoulder. Maddox sat up with a yawn and reached for her last gift left under the tree, wrapped in EJ’s signature sparkly red wrapping paper. She tore it open to reveal a retro digital camera, decorated with funky stickers and had ‘Gadget’ written across it with paint pen.
“Whoa, this is awesome!” She held it up, examining it closer.
EJ beamed. “Thought you might like it. Especially since you’re the head PA of Romeo and Juliet.” He nudged Maddox playfully, who swatted him away with a laugh. “It’s not a big deal.”
EJ rolled his eyes, but left it at that.
Maddox smiled tiredly. It had been a long few months working as the head Production Assistant of such a big movie, which was so close to wrapping. Between twelve hour shifts, logistical nightmares, and keeping all the various departments running smoothly, Maddox was definitely feeling burnt out. Not that she’d ever admit that to the ever-worrying Ashlyn.
Maddox watched fondly as her girlfriend modeled the hat and scarf that Gina had knitted her, heart warming at the girl’s obvious joy. At the same time, though, a thread of fear nagged at the back of her mind. Would she have enough energy to support Ashlyn during the spring musical as a stage manager? Ashlyn said that she had previous luck with spring musicals at East High, and Maddox didn’t want to let her down.
But there was no way she was admitting any weakness, not when Ashlyn always got that anxious crease between her brows when Maddox so much as yawned too loudly these days. It was better to pretend that Maddox was still her usual energetic, spunky self.
As the gift exchange wound down and conversations shifted to dinner plans, Maddox curled into Ashlyn’s side with a content sigh. Her girlfriend’s arm wrapped around her waist, comforting as always.
“How are you feeling?” Maddox heard Ashlyn’s soft voice pull her away from the distinct conversations that she was eavesdropping on from all over the living room. Maddox sighed. Of course Ashlyn saw straight through her attempted nonchalance.
“I’m okay Ash, I promise,” Maddox reassured, her voice stern but soft. “Just ready for a nice, quiet break is all. But then it’ll be time for the musical!” Her voice was laced with forced enthusiasm.
She watched Ashlyn study her face carefully, clearly not convinced. “You know, if you need the semester off from extracurriculars, no one would blame you.”
“No way, I need to be with you guys for the musical. It will be fun, I swear!” Maddox insisted, sitting up straighter to prove her energy.
Ashlyn still frowned, her eyes full of concern. “I don’t want you to burn out, that’s all. You work so hard and deserve a break.”
Maddox opened her mouth to protest, but was cut off by Kourtney’s excited squeal.
“Guys, look! A Christmas Story is on! We have to watch, it’s tradition,” she said, grabbing the remote.
A reprieve from a difficult conversation– Maddox shot Ashlyn a reassuring look and snuggled back into her side to watch the movie. Her girlfriend still seemed wary, but dutifully wrapped both arms around Maddox and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
The movie played out as they all chatted and snacked, buoyed by the nostalgic Christmas spirit. But too soon, it was over, and they began packing up to head to Denny’s. Maddox stretched with a groan and got up slowly, drawing a worried glance from Ashlyn.
“If you want to stay here and rest, we can. You clearly haven’t had a full night’s sleep in weeks and I don’t want you to keep pushing just for us.”
Maddox flashed Ashlyn a quick smile, standing up quickly. “I’m fine, I promise. Let’s go get some pancakes!”
The Wildcats soon piled into cars, Kourtney riding shotgun with EJ as Maddox followed behind with Ashlyn and Jet. The diner was packed with other last-minute Christmas patrons, but their usual booth was still thankfully open. They squished in together; Maddox happily sandwiched between Ashlyn and EJ, with Kourtney and Jet across from them. Ricky and Gina arrived soon after; Gina taking her place beside Kourtney while Ricky pulled up a chair at the end of the table.
After placing a multitude of food orders, easy conversation flowed as everyone recalled highlights from the gift exchange, and discussed the possibilities of the spring musical.
Maddox chimed in when prompted, but found herself drifting in and out of focus, exhaustion catching up to her at last. She leaned heavily into Ashlyn’s side, barely noticing when their plates arrived, filled with pancakes, eggs, and hashbrowns.
A concerned call of her name brought Maddox’s head up with a start. Ashlyn was peering at her worriedly, gently pushing her plate closer. “Your food’s here.”
Maddox rubbed her eyes with a sigh. “Thanks, sorry. I think you might be right about the ‘no sleep’ thing catching up to me,” she joked halfheartedly.
Ashlyn only nodded slowly and put a hand on the girl’s knee. “We can go home after you eat, okay? EJ won’t mind if we take his car.”
Maddox nodded gratefully, too tired to protest further. The idea of curling up in Ashlyn’s arms for the night was all the motivation Maddox needed to tolerate the Wildcats any further. She dug into her pancakes quickly, listening into her friends’ conversations once again.
By the time they finished eating, Maddox was drooping where she sat. It was quite funny to the group, who made jokes about both Maddox and Gina practically falling asleep in their food the entire dinner. Maddox didn’t even notice that Gina was as exhausted as her.
Ashlyn took charge immediately, hugging her friends goodbye and hustling Maddox into the car. The girl looked back to see Ricky doing the same, giggling to herself at the idea of the rest of her friends being stranded at Denny’s. She heard Ashlyn call something back to EJ, telling him that she’d be back soon.
Soon enough, Maddox was being driven back to her girlfriend’s house. The street lights were almost hypnotic out the window as Ashlyn drove them through the quiet Christmas streets. Maddox drifted in and out, lulled by the smooth rumble of the engine and the rhythmic sounds of the wipers against the light snow.
Her blinks became slower, until finally, they stopped. Her breathing evened out as sleep claimed her in the passenger seat of EJ’s car.
~
erm yeah there will be multiple chapters, and this is just the prologue, AND i have it all planned out already, so expect that soon!!!

This is for chapter 3 of my second saddest fic called I can't, take it, my heart's breaking, please don't say it
He saw EJ standing in the doorway crying. Carlos got up, walked over to EJ and pulled him into a tight hug. They stood there hugging and crying together for 10 minutes. When they separated Carlos walked out of the room and EJ sat beside Ricky. Carlos didn't make it out of the hall before breaking. He slid down the wall next to the door. TK walked over to Ricky's room to see if Carlos needed anything. He noticed someone sitting next to the door. TK couldn't see the person's face because it was between their knees. He then recognized the person from the uniform, TK hadn't been able to convince Carlos to go home yet. “Baby are you okay?” TK lightly touched Carlos's shoulder to get him to look up at him. Carlos looked like a mess and it broke TK’s heart. TK knew that a person is never this distraught over a brother. “Carlos I hate to ask you this, but is it really just a family connection with Ricky?” TK didn't want to jump to conclusions but also had to know. “Ty, how would you feel if the person you always turned to for help attempted suicide? Ricky has been there for me through everything. He was the one who encouraged me to come out to my parents. He helped me love the body I'm in during a time where I hated my appearance. And I just found out that I wasn't there when he needed help.” TK didn't know about everything Ricky did for Carlos. TK knew that high School was dark for Carlos but he didn't know it was that dark. He didn't know that Carlos once hated how he looked. TK never knew why Carlos wouldn't show him high School photos. “Babe, do you still hate how you looked back then?” TK also helped Carlos stand up so that he could sit in an actual chair. TK's heart broke when Carlos nodded his head at the question. “Sort of, I don't hate it anymore but I do feel like it wasn't my best look.” TK once again attempted to get Carlos to go home and rest. “Carlos, you look a mess. Let's go home so you can change and get some sleep, okay?” TK expected Carlos to refuse and was shocked when he didn't. “You're right, I really need some sleep, a shower and some actually edible food.” They were about to leave the hospital when they saw Gina crying. She was getting water so she had her back to them. Carlos lightly touched her shoulder to get her to turn around. Gina looked just as bad as Carlos did and it worried TK. “Gina, when was the last time you ate anything, or got any sleep, or even showered?”

*SET AT CAMP SHALLOW LAKE*
“LET IT GO” S3, EP8 of HSMTMTS (REIMAGINED)
Ricky Bowen woke up on his 18th birthday feeling congested as hell but he was not going to let a little cold stop him.
He sat up in bed, his nose tickled and he let out a wet sneeze. “Aah-tschieww!!”
“Gesundheit” Carlos said, looking up at his sneezy friend.  Ricky muttered a thank you, pulling the covers off of him and swung his legs over his bunk to face his friend.
“Great. I got a cold for my birthday” Ricky announced with disappointment in his hoarse and nasally voice.
Carlos scrunched his face at him, “Maybe you should go to the nurse,” he suggested. Ricky’s eyes bulged, jumping down from the bunk. He sniffled, “No way, dude! It’s opening night. E.J. will kill me if I’m–” Ricky paused, unable to say the word.
“Sick” Carlos added, finishing his friend's sentence. “No, no, no. It’s just a cold. I’m perfectly fine” he said feeling another tickle in his nose, “Aah-tschieww!!” he leaned into his elbow, catching the sneeze.
“Bless you. Right…Maybe a hot shower will help?” Carlos suggested. “But make it quick, we have to get over to The Barn for the final run-through.”
“Good thinking!” Ricky replied. As Carlos gathered his Olaf costume, he rooted around his bag with first-aid supplies including a packet of tissues and Vicks Vapor Rub.
Then a familiar brooding voice chimed in, “You might be able to get around E.J. But Val will smell you from a mile away. She’s like a hawk” Jet added looking at the two boys, wearing all black as usual. Ricky shuddered, forgetting about his other roommate.
“What…do you mean?” Ricky answered, slowly. Jet was right. E.J. could be gullible. So he shouldn’t have a hard time hiding this from him, but if Val was on high alert, he was doomed. The show would be ruined as well as his birthday.
“Val is a super sleuth. She can smell a sickness before it’s even coming” he said, his voice low and mysterious as if he were telling a ghost story, “A few summers ago, when some of the cast for The Music Man got food poisoning, she knew the minute it happened. Last year, she sent home a girl with pink eye during auditions for Annie. You can’t get anything past her” Jet said, shrugging his shoulders.
The mysterious boy walked toward the front door and wished his roommate “good luck” as he disappeared out of the yurt.
Carlos walked over to his curly-haired friend as he gathered his shower essentials out of his duffle bag. He tapped him on the shoulder, startling the boy. Ricky jumped in place and turned around to face his friend.
When he looked down at the gifts, Ricky grinned.
“Happy Birthday, Ricky” Carlos said, handing him the sick supplies.
“Thanks, Carlos,” he croaked, his voice hoarse, giving him a side hug.
The two parted ways, Carlos to The Barn for rehearsal and Ricky to the showers. He grabbed his towel, clean clothes, and toiletries, hoping and praying that no one saw him.
Ricky tried to hide himself from any friend he saw which wasn’t as easy as he thought it’d be. As he walked, he hid behind trees and bushes, trying to hide himself from his fellow Wildcats.
As he walked closer to the showers, he saw Ashlyn walking right toward him. The fortunate part of being at camp was the trees. They made great hiding spots. As he stood behind a tree waiting for Ashlyn to pass him, he started to sniffle. “Nooo”, he groaned at the thought of sneezing again. How was he going to make it through the day unscathed when he was drowning in mucus and his nose wouldn’t cooperate.
Ricky groaned loudly. “Oh, Ricky! There you are” Ashlyn said, looking at her friend with a puzzled look as he stood by the tree pinching his nose.
“Happy Birthday!” she exclaimed giving him a big toothy grin.
He tried to hold in the sneeze which was successful at first. He sighed of relief, “Ahh” feeling the sneeze pass. Unfortunately, the sneeze crept back up without warning.
“Hnn'gtt!!” Ricky caught the sneeze in his elbow, pulling out one of Carlos’ tissues.
He sniffled, “Thanks, Ash. Allergies, right?” he said laughing nervously, trying to play off his symptoms casually.
Ashlyn was quiet for a moment, noticing his pink nose. Maybe he should be playing Sven tonight…
Ashlyn was healthy as a horse. “Nope, not me!” she answered, patting him on the back. “See you later!” she said, walking off toward the girl’s yurts.
Ricky sighed, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Today was going to be difficult and his chest was starting to hurt.
Carlos was right, a hot shower did help. His congestion had subsided for now which was going to help in convincing everyone he was perfectly fine. He wore his Kristoff costume which consisted of a dark pom-pom hat, a long sleeveless tunic with a long sleeve dark gray thermal shirt underneath paired with black pants and winter boots. Despite it being 92°F outside in sunny California, Ricky shockingly felt warm and cozy.
He cleared his throat, puffed his chest out, and fixed his posture, then walked into The Barn with a brave face on. Everyone was rearranging furniture, transforming the small space into a suitable arrangement for friends and parents to come watch their children perform their role on stage. Luckily since everyone was preoccupied, the attention would be off of him for the time being.
Ricky walked over to Gina who sat on the edge of the stage holding a piece of paper, mumbling to herself.
“Because she’s my sister!” she enunciated.
Ricky furrowed his eyebrow. “Hey G,” he said, standing next to her with a big grin on his face.
Gina put the paper down beside her on the stage. She furrowed her eyebrows and looked at Ricky, suspiciously. He was acting strange, she thought. Ricky was a chipper guy but to her, it seemed today, he was playing up his positive vibe.
“Hi” she said hesitantly, furrowing her brow at him.
“Ready for the big night, Anna?” he said playfully elbowing her in the side. Gina laughed, cracking a big toothy grin at him.
Moments later, E.J. stood by the stage shouting to get the room’s attention. Ricky held his ears at the sound as it felt like the boy was screaming in his ear. “I don’t think that was loud enough” the curly haired boy teased, plugging his ears which were beginning to ache.
His stomach dropped, anxiety fluttering in his chest as Val came and stood beside the director. Ricky got up and walked to the back of the clutter of people, to hide himself from Val as much as he possibly could. As everyone began to move and get to their places, Ricky couldn’t help but feel on edge.
Finally, it was Ricky’s turn to rehearse for "Kristoff’s Lullaby", his solo. He cleared his throat and crossed his fingers, hoping that his body would cooperate for the duration of the song. He grabbed his acoustic guitar, strummed the strings by the sound hole, and began to sing.
♪ What is this hollow kind of helplessness I'm feeling? ♪
♪This type of terror is new ♪
♪And, the fact that I can hardly breathe is now revealing ♪
When the chorus came, that is when all hell broke loose. His voice cracked as he tried to reach the high note, but his scratchy throat wasn’t doing him any favors.
Ricky’s chest tightened as E.J. started to bark at him, “Ricky, this is not what we rehearsed! You’re not supposed to sound like there’s a frog in your throat. This is Frozen” the taller boy flailed his arms in the air in disappointment.
Ricky frowned, holding his throat and stood up. “Why don’t we take 5?” Val intervened. She stood for a moment staring into Ricky’s eyes. This gave him goosebumps. He shuddered and turned his back toward her.
As he and his castmates were backstage taking a breather, Val worked on calming E.J. down. Ricky sighed loudly, relived to be out of the spotlight. He felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned to see Gina with her long-braided hair in Anna’s winter costume.
“Hey, are you feeling okay?” she asked furrowing her brow. “Yeah, yeah. It’s just allergies” he said clearing his throat and wincing at the discomfort. He tried to brush it off with a grin but seeing Gina frown, he knew he was doomed.
“Ricky, you have to tell somebody” she said cocking an eyebrow at him, placing a hand on her hip and stared him down until he confessed.
Ricky shrugged, “But the show!” he whispered, his voice cracking as he spoke.  “I’m sure you can still do the show. Why don’t we go and ask Val?” Gina suggested. Ricky immediately put his hands up in defense. “No way” he cried, envisioning the worst outcomes.
If what Jet said earlier was true, Ricky would be saying goodbye to his friends and fellow campers. Ricky started to feel sad as he thought about packing his bags and going back to Salt Lake. During his daydreaming, he completely missed Gina pulling him by the arm and over Val and E.J. who sat next to each other on the chairs for tonight’s audience doing breathing exercises.
“Hey guys. Ricky, how’s that cold?” Val asked, smirking at the curly haired boy. Ricky stood dumbfounded. Jet was right.  “How did you—what?” he said frantically, stumbling over his words.
Val stood up and placed a hand on Ricky’s shoulder, “I have eyes everywhere” she told him. Ricky gulped in terror. “It’s just allergies, really!” he tried to reassure her, flailing his arms in the air to prove he was “healthy.”
His shoulders slumped as she nodded in disagreement.
What came next didn’t help Ricky’s case. A big ole’ sneeze escaped from his nasal passages.
“Haa'ekkSHIEW!!” Val stood in front of him holding out a tissue which he grabbed, blowing his nose hard.
“Don’t worry ‘bout me, guys. I’b fide! It’s just by dose, by ears, by throat, by chest” he explained in his nasally voice, as E.J. pulled up a chair for him to sit in.
Val kneeled on the ground making eye contact with him. “Ricky, I know it’s your birthday” she began. The barn erupted in chatter all wishing him a happy birthday. Ricky waved, thanking everyone and looked back at Val. “But you’re clearly not 100%. So, I have a proposition” the barn grew quiet as they awaited the girl’s next words.
“You have to go to the nurse with me, get some medicine and some rest. Then, you can perform tonight. But these are the conditions” she explained. Ricky frowned. His list still wasn’t fully complete. He checked the pizza off yesterday at Camp Prom but he was missing a lottery ticket, still.
Finally, as he thought about it, he was surprised Val wasn’t shipping him off on the next bus home.
“Fide” he muttered. “The show bust go od. Ab I right guys?” he announced to crowd. Everyone erupted into applause mixed with laughter.
Val stood up and gestured Ricky to follow her. He complied holding the packet of tissues in one hand and walking out of the barn doors following her lead.
When he got back to the yurt, hopped up on cold medicine, he raised his arms and yawned. The nurse checked his temperature, it was normal. That was a relief. But his sore throat, congested nose, aching ears, and headache confirmed it was indeed a cold.
“A cold on my birthday. Pssh” he mumbled in frustration as he slipped out of his costume, storing it away for that night and changed into joggers and white shirt and dozed off to sleep.
He woke to Carlos shaking him. “Ricky! Wake up! Curtain call is in 20” he said. Ricky woke up groggy, his throat was hurting, and his head pounded. He pulled himself out of bed slowly and walked over to his bag, grabbing his costume and leaving the yurt quickly with Carlos.
When they got backstage, it was dark and quiet. Ricky thought this was strange as Carlos had informed him about curtain call. This close to curtain call, everyone was usually pretty frantic. But maybe they did things differently at Shallow Lake than at East High?
Ricky shrugged and walked closer looking for a light. He turned on the light and jumped, dropping his costume as everyone surprised him. All of his cast mates and Wildcats including Big Red and Miss Jenn smiled big. “Happy Birthday, Ricky!” they shouted, cheering. The room was filled with balloons, streamers, and there was a cake sitting on a lone table.
Ricky sniffled, standing there in disbelief. All of the sudden commotion had him winded. He began to catch his breath and walked over to everyone giving side hugs and thanking them.
Maybe this wasn’t an awful birthday after all.

i'll leave my window open
Ricky’s used to the sounds of November Beach by now. He knows all of the patterns – knows that it’s pretty quiet in the off-season, the easy lull of the waves crashing against the sand, knows the seagulls’ squawks, knows the chime of the bell on the door of the café he lives across from, how it rings every time it opens. The sounds don’t bother him until a random Sunday in February.
This is how every good Sunday night goes. Gina loves the routine. Sitting down next to her dog, half a hip on the windowsill lip beside him is routine. Turning to look out the window and admire the sunset while you enjoy that cupcake you worked so hard for is part of the routine. Locking eyes with the guy in the window across the street, is not.
(or, neighbors in a small coastal town Ricky and Gina get to know each other through their windows)

"It is 105 degrees outside and Ricky Bowen’s blood is boiling. Not literally. It would need to be at least 212 degrees for his blood to boil, and at that point his skin would have burned off already. He and Nini looked it up on a particularly slow (they both knew better than to say “quiet”) shift. No, Ricky’s blood is boiling because he’s barely even changed into his uniform and EJ Caswell is already preening. Like a rooster. Or a peacock."---Aka "the first responders au." Ricky's a paramedic. EJ's a firefighter, and even though they work in the same station, they can't stand each other. At least that's what EJ's telling himself.------GUYS @justowrites AND I DID A THING!!
After like a YEAR of planning, this passion project is finally live! It's a caswen first responders au and I CANNOT WAIT to hear what yall think - and just in time for the finale!

Carlos stood there expectantly as Ricky processed what was in front of them, the bushel of mistletoe swinging directly above them like a ticking clock. And as the moments passed, he tried to summon that quick wit he’d claimed to have, find a way out of this, regardless of how they were holding on to each other just now.
The last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable, cross that line she’d so carefully drawn – I'm not kissing you.

Or, Ricky and Gina go on a fake date that's anything but.

It would depend by the request, but yes.

and you wish you could live in between (part two to “i wish”)
broadway actress gina and future portwell
thank you for reading!
Gina sighed as she walked in the large theater when a familiar face met her at the door. “Gina?”
“Carlos? What are you doing here?”
“I’m choreographing this show. You?”
“I’m here for a chemistry read!”
“You’re the Giana they were talking about? I shouldn’t be telling you this but they’re really looking forward to it. Let me show you around.”
Carlos let an assistant director know Gina was there and showed her around backstage. As they walked by the lighting booth he asked, “So how have you been? I saw on Insta you and EJ got hitched!”
“Yeah, and we have a kid now. He’s in Kindergarten.”
“Is he going into the family business?”
“He loves to dance just like his mama.” Gina smiled widely. Gina loved that her son was a dancer just like her. “He’s been taking lessons since he could walk.”
“That’s awesome. Do you guys live nearby?”
“No, we moved out to LA right before Benji was born. Finally got EJ away from the Caswells.”
“Is he still acting?”
“No, he’s working at his dad’s company. He manages their LA branch. He’s doing well and he’s so great with Benji.”
“Seb has been talking about kids but I’m still not sure.”
“Well, if you’re ever in California, I’m always looking for a sitter.”
“Hopefully, the family will move with you to New York and we can take you out to dinner.”
“Oh I couldn’t do that to them.”
“How will you do the show then?”
Gina laughed awkwardly “Well, let’s not count our chickens before they hatch.”
———————————————————————————————————
Gina pressed her phone to her ear as her cab driver took off towards her hotel. “Hey, Eej.”
“Hey! How was the callback?”
“It was great! The theater was beautiful-you would have loved it. Guess who’s choreographing the show?”
“Please don’t say Ms. Jen.”
“No!” Gina laughed loudly. “Carlos! We talked for a while. He and Seb are still going strong up here.”
“Small world!” EJ’s voice cut out slightly. “Hold on, I’m pulling into the pickup line…Benji!” EJ’s loud voice filled Gina’s ears. She heard a door open and close. “B, Mama’s on the phone.”
“Mama! Did you get it?”
“I don’t know yet, Bud.”
“But you did your best, right?”
“Yep, that’s all I can do. How was school?”
“Great! Emily invited me to her birthday party!”
“That’s great! I’ll text Kourtney when I get to my hotel and ask for details.”
“Mama, I’m gonna do a report on a planet-“
“Oh my gosh. I’m getting another call. It’s my agent. I’ll call you back, okay? Love you guys!”
“Love yo-“ The phone cut out before EJ could finish his sentence. EJ looked at Benji through the rear view mirror. “Pretty exciting for Mama, huh?”
“Yeah,” Benji sighed.
“What was the report you were talking about?”
“It’s nothing.” Benji sighed and looked out the window.
———————————————————————————————————
“Sarah! Hi!”
“Gina! I hope I’m not interrupting anything?”
“Not at all.”
“Well, I have some good news. They’re offering you the role of Cinderella in Into the Woods! They were so impressed with your audition and it didn’t hurt that your friend was the choreographer. Congratulations!”
“Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! Obviously, I need to call my husband and-“
“Oh, I bet, dear. Rehearsals start in a month so hopefully that will give you enough time to relocate.”
“Relocate…”
“We can negotiate a shorter run but typically those making their debuts prefer a longer run. At least a year.”
“Right. Well, thank you, Sarah. I need to discuss logistics with EJ-“
“How is Elton? And Benny?”
“Benji is great. They both are. Thank you, Sarah.”
“One more thing. Looks like this show will be more of a reunion. I just heard Elton’s cousin, Ashley-“
“Ashlyn? Is she involved?”
“She was also cast! Congratulations to both of you!”
——————————————————————————————————
Gina raced to Ashlyn’s apartment as soon as she managed to get off the phone with Sarah-which didn’t prove to be an easy task. Ashlyn opened the door with a startled look. “Gina?”
“Ash! I just got off the phone with my agent. When were you going to tell me you also auditioned for Into the Woods?”
“Come in come in!” Ashlyn hugged Gina. “Wait, I didn’t even  know you were here! New York is my turf!”
“Yeah, the second I got back from my reading, my agent called. She set this all up but I didn’t think it would actually happen! And Carlos choreographing? It’s like an East High reunion!”
Ashlyn led Gina to the kitchen. As Gina spoke excitedly about her audition, Ashlyn grabbed two wine glasses from the cabinet. She quickly poured two glasses and handed one to Gina.
“I’m sure EJ is excited to see everyone again! I’m sure glad I’ll actually get to see Benji!””
“Yeah, you’re the only one who knows right now. I need to call him but…”
“But?”
“I don’t know. He already moved to LA for me. I don’t know if he’ll be able to leave.”
“I’m sure he and Uncle Cash will work something out. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, G! You can’t just walk away.”
“I know. I just…I need to call him…I’m happy, Ash. Really. Just nervous about how it’s all going to work.”
“Well, our guest room is always available if that’s helpful.” Ashlyn put her hand on Gina’s shoulder gently. “Go call him and then we’ll have a movie night. I’ll tell Red to bring some food home when he closes.”
“You’re the best. You know that, right?”

Hey, I have a prompt for you! How about A and B are broken up, and A has to go over to Bs to get some of their stuff only to find B really sick and they feel they can’t just leave them. As B is miserable but things are really awkward at first and B is mad but eventually they relax and let A take care of them.
Hi! Thanks so much for your prompt. Here's one I did for HSMTMTS.

rina + iconic couples in media
this is my fun way of responding to the alternate universe prompt for @rinaweek <3. rina and their parents in every universe, finding each other and falling in love. alsooo this post was slightly inspired by this absolutely brilliant edit linked here (x) and if you want rinatroyella or rinajacey edits, please lmk and I'll send my favorite ones <3333
troyella
Tumblr media
the essays that can and have been written about troyella and rina are extensive (and I'm happy to do a longer form one in a separate post). but from being the new girl x boy who's never moved, girl encouraging boy to audition for the musical and actually commit, kissing in the rain, starring in the school musical together, to making a huge commitment to the other person on a stage in front of a bunch of people, rina is quite literally troyella reincarnated. and yeah, lots of people can argue that troyella is perfect as is, that they didn't need another version. and on one hand, i agree. but the way in which rina takes core parts of troyella's story while standing on their own as a ship is beautiful and truly does justice to the original franchise by anchoring the story around these two, both individually and as a couple, just as was done with troyella in the original trilogy. my favorite troyella parallel moment from s4!
4x01 - ricky sneaking into gina's room just like troy would come into gabriella's room through her balcony
4x02 - the note ricky gives gina in the hallway to meet in their secret staircase is just like the note troy slips in gabriella's locker in hsm to meet on the rooftop. (honorable mention to them auditioning for and getting the roles of troy and gabriella in this ep as well <33)
4x03 - of course, it has to go to their rendition of can i have this dance. their voices sound gorgeous and though the choreo they do has similarities to the original, they've made it their own.
4x04 - this one is kinda reaching but I wanted something for each ep! in hsm2, sharpay forces troy to sing a song with her, one she prepared for the talent show, instead of allowing him to go on a date with gabriella. in a similar vein, though with considerably less scheming from dani's side, dani is selected to replace gina as gabriella because she is so busy with the movie, though this is done behind her back.
4x05 - has to go to the rain kiss obviously. although troy and gabriella only ever kiss under sprinklers, it's the same vibes. there's also a still (not included in the scene) of the rain kiss of ricky holding gina's waist as she throws her arms up that's so reminiscent of troyella in the rain during cihtd.
4x06 - ricky and gina running down the hallway at the beginning of the episode feels like a direct parallel to troy and gabriella running to auditions in hsm. also rina fighting to save the show is super similar to gabriella (and troy once gabriella convinces him) pushing for the theater department to put on a show about them for their spring musical.
4x07 - they're literally playing troyella in this ep so I could say so much. i'll just use this space to talk about how much I love them in a night to remember and how much it looked like they were dancing at their wedding. I will say that terri, gina's mom, telling ricky about gina's movie with a smile on her face, reminds me a lot of gabriella's fans setting troy up to talk shit about her on camera to convince her to focus on the decatholon. also reflects sharpay telling troy about stanford, again with a smile on her face.
4x08 - again, this ep is rife with toryella coding because they're literally playing troyella, but the show goes super meta in having them sing the right here, right now reprise as ricky has just found out that gina is potentially moving across the world to film her movie, just as troy finds out about stanford and struggles with gabriella not being there for the rest of their senior year. on a much less angsty note, ricky singing love you forever to gina has the same vibes as troy choosing gabriella and going to school close to her, not to mention that lines in the song directly reference the song "high school musical" (which you can read more about here <3). gina also deciding to move the movie to salt lake is very much her "I choose basketball but I also choose theater but more than all of that, I choose gabriella" her version is "I choose filming this movie but I also choose theater but more than all of that, I choose ricky" just a beautiful perfect scene all around.
these s4 moments only scratch the surface of the troyellarina tether but i'll stop ranting for now and move on to rina's teen drama parent sets.
jacey
after s1, tim federle did an interview where they asked him about him about the ricky / nini / gina triangle, he directly mentioned dawson's creek in guiding his writing process, stating that at the center of his thought process was "how do I surprise audience members with who they're going to ship?" (x). for those who don't know the jacey lore, to make a long story short, their love triangle centered around joey, pacey, and dawson. joey and dawson were childhood best friends and joey has a crush on dawson. pacey and dawson are best friends and joey and pacey do not get along initially. after events of life, dawson asks pacey to "look after joey" at the beginning of s3, the two get super close and eventually catch feelings for each other and they secretly date as they figure out a way to break it to dawson (sound familiar?). they do break up but come back together at the end of the show and are endgame. the parallels between jacey and rina exist both on and off screen. dawson and joey were the initial endgame for the show, just like rini was the show's s1 endgame. however, electrifying chemistry between katie and joshua (jackson) & sofia & joshua (bassett) in their respective shows changed everything. rina is one of the strongest examples of continuing this legacy of disrupting the initial plans concocted in the writer's room to make way for insane chemistry. some of my fave jaceyrina parallels
rina and jacey having a formative, chemistry presenting moment in a car (rina in 1x05 during homecoming, joey and pacey in 1x during their science project)
the sheer parallels between them in 3x19 of dawson's creek and 3x08 of hsmtmts with their kiss scenes. just watch here (x) and here (x) to see. the "stop me" "wait" parallels actually make me go crazy
joey tutoring pacey in 3x09 and gina (presumably) becoming ricky's tutor after 4x06
i'm rewatching 3x09 in preparation for this and jacey has a scene where dawson catches them talking about pacey helping joey with a ballroom dance scholarship thing in exchange for tutoring and he asks them what no one can find out about and a) pacey sucksssss at improv just like gina it's like that 4x02 scene with rina and ashlyn and b) it also feels like rina with the chocolates, again with ashlyn LMAOOO in 2x04
ALSO in this ep (wow it's a goldmine), when dawson and jen catch joey and pacey ballroom dancing, they're forced to join the class and the instructor psychoanalyzes both couples. for jacey, she mentions that the tension and bickering between them suggests their underlying attraction for one another. this is literally what val (their choreographer!!) does after watching rina perform wdykal in 3x05
too much to explain for the final scene of this episode but i just encourage everyone to watch 3x09 to get the same sense of a major scene in a coat check and an ensuing apology
pacey telling joey he remembers everything in 3x22 and ricky telling gina he's never forgotten a thing she's said in 4x03
pacey telling joey that the simple act of loving her is enough for him and that she's "off the hook" and ricky telling gina that of course she has to go and be a star, as well as singing lyf not knowing that she was staying in slc, so he just wanted to let her know that he loved her for the sake of it, not to convince her of anything
pacey having to tell joey something but lying to protect her (and ricky having something to tell gina but lying to protect her (3x07)
naley
another paragon of teen drama royalty is naley. literally the best people ever and it makes sooo much sense that rina is similar to them because they're actually rina's grandparents. naley birthed troyella, who birthed rina. a beautiful family tree. anyways, naley doesn't seem to, on the surface at least, seem to have a lot of parallels to rina. a shy tutor girl and a cocky basketball player who get married after knowing each other for less than a year? (though I will go down with my headcanon that rina gets married super duper young, will not be taking any arguments). despite this, at their core, naley's love for each other is so reminiscent of rina's love for each other, not to mention some incredibly direct parallels that the two have, listed below:
nathan dropping haley home after a party & ricky dropping gina home after homecoming ("yeah, this is my house" & "so, this is where I live")
connecting over dubious circumstances (nathan requesting haley as a tutor/getting close to her to get back at lucas & gina convincing ricky to stay in the show so she could get gabriella, attending hoco with ej to psych nini out but instead connecting with ricky)
nathan putting haley's hand to his heart after telling her it's racing (it was because of drugs but still, it beats for haley) and ricky putting gina's hand on his heart after telling her that his heart's racing (i'm telling y'all this scene is the same, just with the characters and setting swapped)
alllllll of naley's s2 angst is like the intense and more painful version of rina's angst in s4
naley invented rain kisses (even if they existed before them, no they didn't) and rina obviously does justice with their own rain kiss in 4x05
when nathan proposes to haley (their first proposal), he tells her that "I could love you forever." audience, what's the title of ricky's love song for gina? i rest my case
haley being nathan's tutor and gina being ricky's tutor <3333
nathan sneaking into haley's bedroom to study and makeout and ricky sneaking into gina's bedroom to sing and makeout
nathan and ricky being haley and gina's biggest fans when it comes to their careers, putting their success over their personal feelings (nathan collecting clippings of haley's tour, paying chris to let her record music & ricky decorating gina'ss trailer, encouraging her to go to nz to be a star)
rina served cheerleader x basketball player (though at different times and both were fictional but wtv) just like naley
this was super nonexhaustive as rina also has parallels to jam, mondler, sethmer, romeo & juliet, and so many other ships. however, I'm lazy and didn't want to write all of those out. maybe I'll return to them another time, but for now, pls enjoy this <3333
