oh my goodness yes hsmtmts headcanons! I have some that I’ve been thinking about so apologies if this is a horrific mess that jumps all over the place :) also this is going to be very very long so apologies 🥰

after the whole “Romeo and Juliet announcement” for Christmas they get twin golden retriever puppies, one for each of them, and name them Romeo and Juliet. Juliet belongs to Ricky and Romeo belongs to Gina. Romeo is affectionately known as ro or romey and Juliet is affectionately known as ju or juju. (pretty sure this one has been said by people already but I LOVE the idea of it and i had to add Juliet)

furthermore on the Romeo and Juliet topic after Mack leaves Quinn asks Ricky to step in 😍

this is more down the line but I have a vision for in the future when Ashlyn and Maddox want kids. they want to adopt though, and as soon as they find the perfect little red haired munchkin Maddox immediately goes to the hardware store and buys tons of paint and they redo an entire room in their cute little cottage for their kid. idk why but that just came to me in the middle of the night, I had an image in my head of Maddie FaceTiming jet covered in paint laughing/crying as they finish up the room.

jet asks Kourtney out at the big New Year’s Eve party at Ashlyn’s. Enough said. she giggles and accepts and the two become a power couple and a force to be reckoned with.

ricky and Gina continue to meet in the secret stairwell and he continues to climb up through her window even after their relationship goes public

We don’t know what ej is majoring in (at least I don’t remember) so during the middle of his freshmen year he switches it to education. he becomes a teacher and goes somewhere else (somewhere in the Midwest maybe?) to teach middle school sports.

ricky pursues music through college and ends up becoming a famous singer/songwriter/music producer similar to nini but he ends up writing a lot of the songs and soundtracks for Gina’s movies.

Gina pursues her acting career and ends up becoming a total rockstar but she never changed her values and who she is. her and Ricky attend every premiere together

when Dewey gets too old to run camp shallow lake anymore, guess who he asks to take over? Maddox. she happily accepts and moves her and Ashlyn and their red haired baby (ash and Maddie are not married yet btw - can you adopt and still not be married? Dumb question maybe lol) over to California. and one day as they’re going through each of the cabins seeing what shape everything is in, they stop by the honeycomb bunk. Lo and behold as they walk in is a magnificent beautiful romantic picture before Maddox, with a huge framed picture of her and Ashlyn and tons of wild flowers and all her favorite guitars and things. She turns around… and there’s ash with a ring. Ashlyn doesn’t even get to pop the question until Maddox screams and tackles her, laughing and saying “I have to show you something!” She pulls ash behind her over to the theater barn and there is almost an identical setup on the stage, except all of Ashlyn’s favorite things. and now Maddox has a ring. You can guess how it ends. (sorry this one was super long but once I got started I couldn’t stop)

ricky has always enjoyed doing public things for Gina, as we’ve seen. He’s always shouting about his love for her in public, serenading her randomly as they walk through town, etc. well his proposal is exactly the same. They’re on the red carpet for a movie Gina had been kicking butt in (literally, it’s an action movie). (like everyone else has said, they got married young. You decide what age you want specifically) Ricky had been acting a bit nervous and Gina didn’t know why. once they got on the red carpet, in the very center of all those cameras and fans, Ricky took her hand and got down on one knee. Gina’s jaw dropped as Ricky gave the most beautiful profound speech in the world since “I love you forever” and immediately Gina started crying as she said “yes yes infinity times yes!” and everyone cheered and Ricky gave her the biggest hug of his life and spun her around did not let go of her for the rest of the night. *side note: when a reporter asked Ricky if he was nervous about proposing to Gina since it’s very public and what if she says no, Ricky replied with a “that’s not why I was nervous at all. No, I wasn’t nervous that Gina would reject me. We’ve been dating for so long, it’s just- we just get each other. We complete each other. I promised her forever and I’m never going back on that promise. because I do love her forever. No, the only reason I was nervous is because it’s so loud here and I didn’t know if she would hear the things I was saying. I was speaking from the heart! and because I’m on tv being recorded, obviously, what if I mess up and do something stupid? but no, I wasn’t worried at all that Gina would say no.” 🩷 (this one was also extremely long sorry!)

Saw some other rina headcanons (sorry this post might be a lot about them bc I’m in love with them so yeah) but one of them was Ricky gets Gina mystery childcare’s every Valentine’s Day and she literally knows who they’re from but plays along anyway because he’s adorable

Carlos and Seb continue to be a little on again off again through college but eventually settle down in a far-style version of glamping with a huge fancy central house and then a rusty old barn for Seb to do this thing with the cows and such

they have both boys and girls and Carlos insists on having a quince for every one of them (I’m thinking big family…)

all of the respective couples when they have kids name miss Jenn as the godmother 🥹

kourtney is a cat person. idk why. but you cannot change my mind. she’s gonna be a crazy old fashionista grandma with tons of cats telling her grandkids stories while her is half asleep next to her waking up every so often to say “and then I…” and then falling back to sleep

speaking of jetney, jet needs 60 million pep talks before he proposes to kourt - it takes a LOOOOOOOONNGGGG time

i imagine their proposal to be somewhere like iconic. idk I don’t have any ideas where - maybe somewhere overseas?? Kourtney makes her Sharpay dreams come true

Kourtney becomes a world renowned fashion designer and jet is just along for the ride. they have twin boys and a girl and he raises them while working some boring 9-5 job but he loves raising his kids and teaching them all about music and their mama since she’s gone a lot. But they FaceTime every day after school whenever Kourtney’s away for her job, it’s the best part of any day

jenn and mazzy love New Zealand so much that they end up moving there once miss Jenn retires (don’t worry, it’s not for a long time) and when everyone goes for a big reunion party to celebrate the 25th anniversary of hsm4

mike and Lynn don’t actually get back together… do they actually get back together in canon? Or are they just like more friendly towards each other and not so standoffish? Because I dunno, a divorce is very final and then getting back together just offsets the whole change thing Ricky’s gone through. But anyways, that’s just me

nini goes on tour Ricky and Kourtney’s freshmen year in college and Kourtney comes back from Lewis to see her perform in Salt Lake City. nini gets everyone prime seating - even Emmy and jet and Ricky - and they all go and have the best time ever. Ricky and nini don’t kill each other on sight and turns out nini is the biggest die hard rina fan ever and ends up writing a song for them on their wedding day. her and Ricky go back to being better friends and things aren’t so tense after they have a huge raging private concert between them too where they sing all of the thoughts they’ve ever had about each other and just let it all out. It’s very therapeutic for them and helps them understand each other a bit more (same vibe as portwells lil thing in season four where Gina apologizes to ej)

idk i think ej got the ending he deserved. he was such a nothing character to begin with (his redemption story was trite and nothing close to being as interesting as gina's was) and he served no other importance on the show since his character was already a senior going into college near his last season as a lead anyways.

um you're definitely entitled to that opinion however i think one of the main things wrong with where he ended up is that he said "you will never meet another family like the wildcats" to ricky but after he graduated and everyone, including his cousin, just didn't seem to talk to him anymore....

so even if 'he served no importance', it's just bad writing to give him that line and then show no evidence as to why he would still think that, given his situation

also if him being in college and physically away from the other characters excuses his treatment from the writers then by that logic, if kourtney, biggie, and ricky had gone off to college on-screen, it would've been fine if we heard nothing about how they're doing until they visited east high/were visited by someone else

but again your opinion is your opinion and this obviously isn't gonna change your mind so-

I'm still unsure about who's parents I like the least.

Honestly, it's between Lynne Bowen, Terri Porter and Cash Caswell

What Ricky's mom did: letting her boyfriend answering her phone, then showing up with him without asking her son when it's been only like two months since she left them, and knowing that her son didn't react well to the separation. She also left for Chicago, which is not close from Salt Lake City at all.

Then, there's Cash Caswell, EJ's dad. He called some people, pulled some strings, so that his son would be admitted to Duke, and then wasn't supportive of his son decision to take a break for a year and tried to send him to The Caswell Success Training School, located in St Louis, Missouri. Now EJ said in the song Speak Out "I call my dad, but never talk ; Can't ever say quite what I want ; No, it's never enough, never enough ; When the words just don't add up ; So I call my dad, and never talk". The lyrics reflect his relationship with his dad who is strained since he refused to follow his wishes.

And finally there's Terri Porter, Gina's mom. She left Salt Lake before the end of season 1 with her daughter. Then in season 2 she left her daughter behind because she wanted to stay. And she came back at the beginning of season 4. So if we do the maths, she left for less than one year. At the end of season 2, Gina waited for her for the opening night, buh she didn't show up and send her son to excuse her.

In season 4, she wanted Gina to be focus and said no boys. The mother is someone very ambitious who wants her daughter to go far in life. She's very happy that Gina got the movie. Then she meets Mack and her no boys policy is forgotten because he's a successful man, he's already famous.

To Ricky, she dismiss him because he's just an average boy trying to figure out his future, she doesn't care that he loves Gina. She's VERY happy to tell him that Gina got that movie, that she will go to New Zealand and insist that it's "with her co-star Mack". Yeah we know you like him and not Ricky. She's here to see HSM3, Miss Jen noticed that it was a big metaphor for Ricky and Gina's lives. But if the mom notices, she doesn't care. It's only after Ricky sang to Gina that he loves her that she's like "yeah maybe I can accept you".

A parent can not like their child's lover, but she didn't even tried to know him when Gina said that it was him that makes her happy. She was just rude without any reason. She liked EJ but she doesn't care to know Ricky...

None of them is at the same level, but they all hurted their child, they all weren't great parents and persons at some moments. They all hurt their child, intentionally or not.

Lynne is better than Cash and Terri, but do I like her because she was there to Ricky after his breakup? No. Because Mike was there all the time, he stayed, he tried for his son, even though he wasn't living well the divorce. Lynne just left, she didn't even tried to stay close to Ricky, she went to Chicago.

Terri wasn't physically there, but she still done things for Gina like their Valentine's tradition, and she sent her son when she couldn't come so that someone was there for Gina. But she still left for her job, and announced that to Gina a few days before leaving. It was the middle of the semester, Gina just got here, and she finally had friends and a project she was implicated into. She could have found a solution so that she would at least stay for the musical. She sent her son but Gina was still excepting her. The last time they saw each other was during the spring holidays, when Gina went to see her. But the mother wasn't able to come back just for one night.

And Cash at least let EJ go to college even of it wasn't what he wanted for his son. They don't really talk anymore, but he didn't forced him to go to his school.

Objectively talking, Cash is the worst, but do I really like him less than Gina's mom? 🤔

1.) the character everyone gets wrong

…i’m actually gonna go with an hsmtmts answer on this one and say EJ Caswell! as a whole i have some hsmtmts opinions i haven’t gone into but people just don’t understand EJ’s character arc (or they don’t appreciate it, rather, because he momentarily got in the way of rina 😐). it’s like me and two other people on here that truly get that boy, it’s slim pickings out here 🥲

i will also say, as far as pjo—i’m not going to pretend to be the number one expert on leo valdez (or maybe i will lol), but…there’s a very small circle of people on this webbed site that fully /get/ him. like people get him, but there’s always something that’s just /off/…or to be fair maybe i have a very particular version of the boy in my head, and they have theirs, so whatever works for them (i’m too nice for this ask game lol)

i think no fandom is free from its fandom-y tropes, character archetypes, and shipping that utterly chips away at a character until they are nothing but Character A and Character B in an Incorrect Quotes post.

that being said, nico is a complex character. i was talking with my friend @cottieclub and my super sexy personal assistant editor @heavens-vault (lol) about this just yesterday. nico is a character that has these great and powerful arcs over time, and it can be hard to pinpoint how exactly to express his character. some people have different versions, kind of like what i said about leo—hell, I explore a different version of him in every different piece i write with him

but the point is about capturing the essence of his character, and i think sometimes the fandom can fall short and typecast him as The Emo Guy who lays in bed listening to mcr (same) and is Saved by his love interest (i was in that rabbit hole with Virgil sanders in sanders sides for Years don’t do this to me pjo fandom—).

i think as long as you acknowledge his nuance it’s fine to explore his character in a variety of different ways, but…part of a character being a blorbo is that you rotate them in your mind like a microwave potato, and you can’t rotate them if you…take away all their nuance…

So High School Chapter 1

“A new school year” Vania heard her best friend say as they walked into East High. “I know Ash, we have been here before” Vania teases looking at Ashlyn. “Some are a bit longer than others,” Ashlyn replied, nudging Vania. “Just by a year,”  Vania answered, getting to her locker. Ashlyn stopped next to her locker to open hers. “Well a year is a year” Ashlyn stated. 

“Anyways, have you given any thought about what we talked about?” Ashlyn asked hopeful “I have and it’s going to be a big no from me” Vania answered, closing her locker, leaning on it. “What? Why?” Ashlyn asks. “Cause everytime that I audition for a play. I got put in the ensemble. So I will just accept my part gracefully. “ Vania replied 

Ashlyn was about to speak when the school speaker rang out. "Good morning, students. Please make your way to the gym for our annual back-to-school kickoff" Vania smiled and held out her hand for Ashlyn to take. Which she did but not before letting out a huff. Both girls made their way when EJ walked up to them. “Hello ladies” He sing out, walking next to them. 

Ashlyn looked at Vania in pity but Vania just shook her head. Vania grew up with the Caswells. Well more like she lives next to Ashlyn and since they were little, they have been friends. EJ came around all the time and became friends with Vania as well. No surprise, when Vania started to have a crush on EJ. 

Until this summer, Vania didn’t have hope that EJ would have feelings for her, which she was fine with but apparently Ashlyn talked with EJ and found out that he might’ve also had feelings for Vania. So Vania was building up nerve to ask EJ out but two days before he was set to come back from camp. He was gushing to Ashlyn and Vania about his new girlfriend. 

“Are we excited for yet another school year?” EJ asked, putting an arm around Ashlyn. “Oh yeah, school work does it for me,” Ashlyn said in a monotone. Vania just giggled at her friend's words. “And let’s not forget the oh so amazing school food” Ashlyn piped up, rolling her eyes. 

EJ held the gym door for them, Ashlyn and Vania walked in swiftly sitting down in the bleachers. “I’m sorry” Ashlyn apologized, looking guilty. “What for? There’s nothing to apologize for.” Vania shrugs, looking towards the front “I gave you hopes and then-” Ashlyn began but Vania stopped her. “Trust me Ash, you know me better than anyone. My hopes weren’t that high. Remember? I always expect the worst.” 

Ashlyn just sighed and looped their arms together. “I’m sorry again about your grandma” Ashlyn whispered, “It’s fine, she’s going to get better. It’s just cancer. She has been beaten before, remember,” Vania said but it sounded like she was trying to convince herself as well. 

The principal came to the podium. He started to state his rules and what rules are changing. “And I am also pleased to announce that this year seniors will be allowed to wear baseball hats on Fridays” Principal Gutierrez stated. Ashlyn and Vania shared a look, trying to hold their laughs. 

“And now for a special introduction This year, East High has a new drama teacher with an announcement that she swore in writing, would not cost too much money” Mr.Gutierrez gave the podium to the new drama teacher.  “Please hold your applause” she said before grabbing a launcher from the podium before launching a shirt to the student next to them. “Go, Wildcats!”

She walked to grab the mic “My name is Ms. Jenn and when I heard that the high school where High School Musical was shot had never staged a production of High School Musical, the musical I was shocked as an actress inspired as a director and triggered as a millennial. Auditions are tomorrow after school. This show could change your lives and I'm saying this as a background dancer from the original movie Third from the left back row, red headband and those are my real teeth so… Oh, and meet your student choreographer, Carlos You know him as captain of the color guard I know him as an unpaid rising star” 

The bell rang, making everyone get up and started to walk to their classes. “Come on, new teacher. That means a new set of eyes. “ Ashlyn said , walking out of the gym. “Ashlyn, I just don’t have the skill set to be the lead.” Vania replied. “Now that’s a lie. You do and I have heard it” Ashlyn stopped, making Vania stop as well. “Ash, I say that I will audition. Will you let me go to my class” Vania said. “Yes,” Ashlyn smiled. “Fine, I will give it a shot,” Vania said , before running to class. Ashlyn cheered, before making her way to her own class.

The next day got Ashlyn doing the warm up and Vania standing off to the side watching them in amaze. Once the music was done, Vania heard Carlos say, “Great! That's it for the warm-up” 

Vania looked at Ashlyn with fear in her eyes. “I’m sorry, that was the warm up” she whispered to Ashlyn. “Don’t sweat it. You will be fine.” “Everyone, pair up not with a friend. Theater is a community” Ashlyn quickly finds her partner. Vania started to panic, just thinking that she needed to find a partner.“Hey, do you want to be my partner?”  Seb walked up to Vania. She knew him but just from afar.  “I would love that” Vania sighed out of relief.  They quickly walk out to the stage. 

After doing another warm up. Miss Jenn had some students line up to do some reading. She walked up to Vania. “You are giving major Taylor vibes” She said, smiling at Vania before walking to the next student. Carlos quickly gave her the Taylor script. Vania looked over to Ashlyn and she gave Vania a wink. 

Miss Jenn then turns to Ashlyn. “You're giving me uncommon depth. Ms. Darbus?” “I'm dying, I'm deceased, yes” Ashlyn nod happily.  “Oh, your application says you play piano?” Miss Jenn asked. “I dabble,” Ashlyn replied, Vania smirked, knowing that Ashlyn was amazing at the piano. 

“You ever written a song?” Miss Jenn questioned. “I mean, nothing I've ever shared with anyone” Ashlyn answered shocked. “ I always thought the drama teacher should have an Act Two power ballad We'll sidebar,” Miss Jenn whispered before turning to the others in line.  

Ashlyn slowly turns to Vania in shock. Vania returns to the wink from before. It feels like something might change like Ashlyn mentioned in lunch.

In Season 4 is going to be a Halloween episode. My theory is Ashlyn is going to invite the drama club and EJ to a Halloween Party at her house. Even though EJ has already graduate he is still invited because he is Ashlyn’s cousin and it looks like EJ will appear in the Halloween episode. My guess is 4x05 is going to be the Halloween episode b/c the week of Halloween Bart Johnson tweeted about they are filming episode 5 that week. It’s possible Portwell could have moments in this episode.

I have a theory about Portwell in Season 4. I think episode 4x05 might be a good episode for Portwell because the writer of 4x05 is the same writer that wrote episodes 2x08 and 3x04 both those episodes have good Portwell moments.

well, anon, you certainly seem to have much better knowledge of the episodes than i do! and i trust your detective work, so fingers crossed you're right. truthfully, i'm not expecting much from s4, least of all in the way of portwell.

that said, i'm really curious to see ej with all the other characters. i'm honestly not sure what the dynamic will be after everything that happened over the summer, especially with ricky and gina as an official couple (as i think we can safely assume they will be). i think it would be great to have some portwell moments. even if they don't get closure, just to see them interacting will be really interesting. potentially somewhat painful lol, but interesting nonetheless.

and anyway, i hope portwell accidentally turn up in matching costumes à la tsbu (@lovelyserpentines your brain is so big) because that would make me belly laugh
