sorry wait actually its so funny how ppl have no idea how many interests and hobbies i have and research holes i've fallen into in my lifetime. older adults try to make some snide comment about something gen z is doing or how xyz insect is a pest and should be exterminated entirely or etc etc etc and my autistic ass pipes up with an "um actually 😁💬💬💬💬💬💬" infodump about how what they've said is not entirely true, but instead of being snarky about it i'm just happily explaining things bc yay !! i get to share knowledge !!! and they just have to sit there looking vaguely baffled as I happily tell them all about the cool things i know bc i'm insane and love to learn and share HFHDGJKL

trans women are not listened to because any connection to femininity makes their viewpoints "less valuable" by misogynists
trans men are not listened to because any connection to femininity (even in the past) makes their viewpoints "less valuable" by misogynists
trans women are demonized because any connection to masculinity (even in the past) makes them "dangerous and predatory" by radfems
trans men are demonized because any connection to masculinity makes them "dangerous and traitorous" (or infantilized for being "corrupted") by radfems
nonbinary people are forced into one of these two categories because of what either of these groups perceive their "true sex" as, regardless of whether or not it's true, because "Only Two Genders" and "We Can Always Tell" (nevermind the fact that gender is unquantifiable and they can almost never reliably tell in my experience lmao) and then completely dismissed as "not real", "faking it", "dangerous", or "confused"
all forms of transphobia joined at the hip, and exist because of the same root problem: gender/bioessentialism. there are different types affecting different groups of people, and those types are separate with different consequences, but it's all the same motivation: the upholding of the strict, sex-based gender binary, which not only ignores trans people but forces intersex people into categories that often do not fit them
so when a fellow trans person tries to recreate or uphold what they were fed by a society largely created by those who wish to see them dead, my heart hurts a little for them. it's a poisonous idea that has spread like wildfire, and the only way to stop it is to construct a fireproof home, not to build a shack of wood and pray the embers have died. they haven't. they never have, and they never will so long as flammable homes keep burning down

MORE WEI QINGWEI YAPPING BECAUSE YOU GUYS SEEMED TO ENJOY IT BEFORE!!!!!!!
So, I promised yapping about how Wei Qingwei got his scars (amongst other things), and I did some thinking in Sociology (always seem to do things in Sociology lmao)!
Wei Qingwei has scars all over his body, from training with real swords that he shouldn't have had at his age (previous Wan Jian peak lord was also extremely enthusiastic about swords - the bane of the previous Qian Cao peak lord's existence). I like to think that he n Liu Qingge have been friends since head disciples - Liu Qingge always needed more weapons because they all broke, and Wei Qingwei was always the first to volunteer his time to make them on top of all of his other duties. Because they're friends, they always had scuffles n shit, meaning more scars; Liu Qingge obviously has a more aggressive fighting style even without weapons, whereas I think WJP would definitely have more of a weapons based fighting style that he wouldn't deploy with Liu Qingge.
He also gets scars from missions - often acts as a human shield of sorts when others are in danger (there have been multiple occasions where Mu Qingfang stands and watches in utter resignation as WQW stands in front of cowardly loser disciples so they don't get hurt and then immediately gets thrown to the side by the beast/demon of the week).
I know that previous paragraph was a bit tiny, but this is the one I really want to blab about. You know how I said he had facial scars? He has three, really jagged claw-like scars across his face (including his eyes) from wrestling with some form of bear/tiger/beast mix away from another disciple - it was an incredibly gory sight, practically choking on his own blood and some more dripping from where one claw had caught his throat. MQF completely panicked, only being a head disciple and therefore not completely able to deal with such a serious situation.
WQW often regales this tale like a super cool story, while MQF uses it like a warning tale to all of his disciples about getting too cocky. The other peak lords gain a look of horror on their face whenever it's so much as mentioned. WQW also has pretty bad eyesight (wildly varies based on the day) because of this attack, and almost lost his role as head disciple but managed to hold on through a mixture of learning how to work the forge without being able to see and Shang Qinghua (the one WQW saved) managing to get ADP to engrave characters on necessary equipment for WQW's benefit - he doesn't need them anymore, but he definitely keeps them handy.
Usually he wears glasses but, on account of him spending most of his time in the forge due to threat of melting, he doesn't wear them in the forge which accounts to more burns than not.
Despite popular belief of WJP not being the best for pupils who may have certain accessibility issues due to the danger surrounding the peak n the forges, WQW will take on any goddamn student willing to learn - which is why he keeps the accessible tools n other jobs for students, like helping out with enchantments for weapons or making different sheaths and designs for swords n shit.
WJP is also incredibly useful for children who have what can be perceived as "behavioural problems" that don't gel well with other peaks -> there's nothing more relaxing than beating up metal and casting enchantments, according to WQW. The peak lord himself has become very adept in all fighting styles so it's easier for him to help out with other peaks, and will happily spar with any of his martial siblings for a bit of a laugh - LQG appreciates this and is very gruff with his friendship (he froze up when WQW was attacked by the beast that gave him the bad eyesight n facial scars), dumping helpful monster parts onto WQW's doorstep (depending on when in the timeline/AU, either MQF or Shen Yuan tell LQG which parts WQW would find use for).

As a nodal, I want to agree and disagree about "draining" yang people. They do come to us first usually, they see that we don't show interest even when we like them (at least ketu ruled moons) and they simply stop giving a fuck. I think its possible that in some cases we drain them, but I also feel like they are expecting us to show a lot of interest and as someone else said, nodals are used to be gatekeepers (moon people too) of stuff, including feelings. We dont have light to give anyway. I find that we can drain solars as much as they can overwhelm nodals. I always hear nodals complaining about solar people overwhelming them with their energy. So at one point i feel like it's mutual, they may feel like nodals drain them but we feel like they are too much? Idk if that makes sense to other nodals reading this. I know a few solars who I really love and all but I try to stay away because I know if I get into a convo with them they will either start asking a bunch of questions or they will start talking about themselves to the point I will be exhausted. Especially uttara ashadhas, I find all of them to be too intense for me, although i had and still have great friendships with them. when Krittikas are angry for example, I just stand there and dont have any idea of what to do. I find it so hard to give a fuck about things so I dont understand why they're angry and they end up making me tired when they keep talking about the same frustrations over and over.
i feel like they both get tired of eachother, or at least, it could be any of the parts feeling drained, not just yang.
For rahu, I feel like rahuvians are really hard to control, they are chaotic af. they crave yang energy but I dont think they can stand yangs giving them the structure they crave. at the end they will try to destroy it over and over, until the yang person is drained and just gives up.
I want to agree about us being delusional, but I also want to say that Sun and Jupiter people feed our delusions as well. It's not about blaming them for our things. I really dont want to sound like that nodal who isnt self aware. 😭 I enjoy reading shit about us because its funny and it helps. but if we are being real 😭 Sun and Jupiter people validate nodal's delusions. I think I already talked too much so to make it as brief as possible I will give you a personal example. My friend is a punarvasu sun and moon, my other friend UA rising. Sometimes I tell them my delusional stories and they just find a way to literally amplify it or make it worse...... Like if I say "my crush broke up with his gf, i have a chance" they will tell me sometbing like "oh, it's because she is in love with you, she broke up because now she wants you" i told them just yesterday "i know im delusional but dont you guys think thats a lot and also kinda dangerous to tell me" damn
SJSJJSJJSJS lmao
Nodals or Ketuvians being overwhelmed by yang energy is interesting, I've definitely felt like I was "too much" for some of these people
The not being able to care part took me out lol 😭😂my ex friend who had Mula Moon was like that, I'd have a breakdown in front of her and she'd just be like 🧍‍♀️like girlie had no idea what to say or how to react and literally did not give a fck 😂😂
I think these energies are mismatched and it's interesting to hear about it from the perspective of a Nodal
That's one example of them feeding your delusions but I meant being delusional/lacking self awareness in a different way? like many of the Nodals ik have no idea how they are perceived (maybe this is a consequence of them being a shadow planet and literally being in the dark) they will do batshit crazy stuff and blame others for it, act completely unhinged and think they're just being funny or charming or adventurous. It's like my alcoholic broke deadbeat loser senior who acted like he was a catch and that I wanted him. I meant being delusional in a completely different way and cited examples as well of more extreme behaviour? And you really cannot blame anybody else for that lol, those people weren't acting that way bc anybody fed their delusions, they simply were a little bit unhinged

Hello please perceive my Azem OC
Okay thabk ye for looking at her I will now ramble abt her under the cut
So Lucifer's whole deal is that she inspired Emet Selch a lot as his senior. Like, his theatrical nature largely comes from her and so did quite a lot of his ideals. That is to say, we should be glad that Lucifer didn't survive the sundering bc uh... that would have been messy. I mean she'd be super unpredictable and she just generally has very off-putting vibes.
She's Emet Selch and Hythlodaeus' senior- not by a lot but enough that she still kind of sees them as kids/younger siblings lmao. She always used to kind of baby them... much to Emet Selch's chagrin lmao.
Anyways ON our dearest Emet Selch-
He puts her on an unrealistically high pedestal to kinda parallel how everyone holds impossibly high standards for WoL. See, the thing is, he probably shouldn't have put her up on such a high pedestal because she's highkey a sociopath. Yeah uh, he knows and elects to ignore it. Emet and Hyth both think they can fix her and yk what good for them but they look like a fuckin construction crew lol.
I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say that Emet got all of his problems from her. Like A LOT of his Solus persona comes from Lucifer. Like it's not healthy at all lmao. He is imitating her as a (fucked up) form of love and also to remember her. His love for theatrics and the arts? Lucifer. Fat fucking liar? Lucifer. Sadism? Lucifer. General apathy and/or detachment? LUCIFER. Seriously the degree to which he looks up to her you would think she was a SAINT. Something something, when someone dies you only try to remember the good things about them.
As for Hythlodaeus, at least he's aware that something is wrong with her and actually wants to help her. Emet kind of just bought into the persona she put up and while Hyth did to an extent as well, he tries to dig deeper.
Hyth has actually seen Lucifer be vulnerable, but only sort of. Honestly, Hyth is the therapist friend oftentimes to his own detriment. He gives that vibe to me. And about Lucifer being vulnerable; it's not exactly her unloading her sad baggage (bc you best believe she has it) but it's more of her being a little more honest about the fact that she just doesn't feel anyway about anything. She is very self aware about that whole thing but she also struggles with whether or not all of the stuff she says while putting up her act is genuine.
To an extent, Lucifer did genuinely care for those in her circle. She genuinely liked being around Hyth and Emet, and she genuinely respected Venat as her mother/teacher figure. It's just that she's never really honest with them, you know? Listen, Emet, Hyth, and Lucifer have been friends since they were teenagers but if you asked either of them any questions about her that go deeper than the surface you would get nothing. Lucifer on the other hand, despite her troubles with empathy and general emotions, is a little too good at recognizing what makes people tick. She is kind of a piece of shit in this regard because she will use that knowledge.
She uses this knowledge to gain favor with others, to get information, and even to preserve herself. Venat especially is really good at recognizing this and it's something they tried to work on when she took Lucifer under her wing. Key word tried bc you'd best believe when she deserted the Convocation during the Final Days she guilt tripped Emet to hell and back.
One other thing about her I want to highlight is that Venat, Hyth, and Emet are her moral compass. Not exactly in the "I love you and I will follow you" type way, but in the "oh okay you don't like it when I do this" type of way. She has no real concept of right or wrong nor cares much for the moral codes of others, she just kind of cares about how it makes her look and if it'll make her fit in.
Like, maybe she creates a concept and it's dangerous. She doesn't see a problem with it unless Hyth or Emet go "Hey girlypop, this is a little fucked up" and then she'll do a complete 180 and be like "oh haha yeah I guess it is" but she won't destroy the concept. Because why would she? A little personal project won't hurt anyone...
As you can probably tell by now, she is not the ideal person to be Azem. But of course, nobody actually knows what's going on in her noggin and by virtue of being very likable and appearing to enjoy helping other people (it's really just her trying to copy normal human behavior) to the average outsider. Does the Convocation think she's messed up? Yeah, they're not blind- but they think she's just depressed/despondent or something not that she's a high-functioning sociopath.
Now, given all of the above information, we should all be happy it was Emet Selch who survived the Sundering because Lucifer would be much worse. I think out of their little trio, Emet was actually the most merciful outcome because I also think Hyth has the capacity to be a terrifying villain. Dude just think about it; you could either have the sociopath, the one that attaches his entire identity to his friends (who would be dead in this scenario so where does that leave him) or the guys who's just a little grumpy. Shockingly enough, Emet is the most well adjusted one in this polycule. And that is saying a lot.
Lucifer would be worse than Emet because hey, at least Emet has something resembling a moral compass and only works to restore the status quo and get all his friends back. Lucifer? She'd do it for the hell of it. Everyone guiding her morals is fucking gone, what is she going to do? Without them, she has no idea what qualifies as right and wrong anymore. No she doesn't care about restoring the star or whatever she just wants her ego to be fed again. So she'll sort of go along with whatever the hell the Ascians are doing.
Anyways yeah that concludes this essay. In my next one I will go over her parallels with my WoL.

I am a little worried this ask could be easily misunderstood as being in bad intent, especially seeing the amount of fans assigning every possible diagnosis, I mean the ones they consider “evil” (which I do find pretty ableist to be honest), to Griffith. Nevertheless I am quite interested in your opinion on the matter. So. Would you say that Griffith has some types of mental disorder? I do not know anything about you so I do not know if you have proper knowledge to actually determine him as such, nor if you are comfortable with answering this type of question, obviously feel free to ignore me, hiding behind anon, trying to get some answers from you😅. But I must admit, I can see some signs of different types in him? although it could be just projecting. I doubt it could be Miura actual intention, but I could be wrong, he did surprise me with his knowledge and openness in his interviews already. Doesn’t matter if you decide to post this, or not, I’m thankful for your content brightening my everyday and making poor little heart who feels such deep weird connection with Griffith so happy ❤️
Honestly, I mostly ignore the weirdos when it comes to Griffith diagnoses so I have no idea wtf they’re saying about him - I mostly see a lot of "sociopath" and "narcissist" but he doesn't actually qualify for either one so like.... mostly it’s a bunch of pop culture-fed armchair psychologists talking shit about characters they don't like.
AS FOR ME
I do know a fair amount about psychology - I guess more than your average person in an armchair playing Freud - but I am in no way a medical professional or qualified to be diagnosing people. Characters are extra difficult because we can only judge from what the writer puts on the page and even the most complex character is ruled by like... story logic, which obviously doesn't apply to real life.
Which is to say take it with a grain of salt regardless of who's saying it, but since you asked...
...for me personally, Griffith mostly comes off as having I guess a combination of ptsd (along with almost everyone in the series, lmao) and what's colloquially called Smiling Depression, which is a form of major depression with atypical presentation where the person internalizes their symptoms so that their emotional issues are invisible from the outside despite being just as debilitating internally.
If you're curious about it, you can read about that here, and here's a nutshell rundown from someone who is, let's stress this again, not a mental health professional:
The people most prone to this particular variant of depression will tend to be ambitious or perfectionistic. They may feel like a fraud - they may not even realize that what they're feeling is depression and certainly not a lot of people outside would know as they appear to be active, high-functioning individuals - even unusually high-functioning. They may even be seen as "perfect," with a steady job and healthy active social life, but they have few real friends or confidants and often unhealthy coping mechanisms. They often have poor  self-esteem and suffer from low self-worth. They may think that showing their feelings would be perceived as weakness and like they don't want to burden people with their problems. They may not have the energy deficits that people with more typical depression presentations have in public, but it may hit them when they're alone. Smiling Depression is considered by some to be potentially even more dangerous than typical depression because of the suppression, reluctance to seek help and, well, the excess of energy that they sometimes use in self-destructive ways? Thus they are sometimes at a high risk of suicide.
Now, was Miura sitting there thinking about what mental disorders Griffith might have had... no idea. I mean I wouldn't necessarily doubt it, he did talk about Griffith being unable to love women and probably being a victim of child abuse + his inability to reroute his life's path, so obviously he was thinking about Griffith's psychology.
But either way what I do think is that his own mindset colored the way he wrote Griffith - Miura has said that he was depressed while creating the Golden Age which is why the Eclipse so so extreme, for example - just like his own experience of childhood trauma and abuse obviously colored everything in the series and every character he wrote.
Plus Griffith (like Guts) is based on both him and Mori, and they were both depressive survivors of childhood abuse and/or neglect, so ptsd + depression seems to make sense.
Anyway, I don't know if that's what you were looking or hoping for, but hopefully it's interesting. <3

what a dim fkn lesbophobe.. ofc most prostitutes don't enjoy most times the crusty johns f*ck them but if they're osa they at least have the capacity to enjoy sex involving males and their dicks which lesbians innately do not. it's overdramatic to say that every single encounter a prostitute (who had picked this job) has is SA, that's trivializing the very meaning and victims of SA. there absolutely are het and bihet women who enjoy being promiscuous and getting railed by random males and have decided they may as well make money from that as incomprehensible and dangerous and anti-feminist as it is. but lesbians could never willingly be with a male, so yes, ofc if a male r*ped me - a gold star lesbian, it would be 100 times worse for my psyche than a fellow woman r*ping me. that is not the say that r*pe isn't always traumatic. female heteros can't ever really relate to this because they are female themselves and are attracted to males who oppress them so they'll never understand how revolting the very idea of any physical contact with a male is to us, the softest seemingly consensual hetero 'love-making' 🤢 would still be aggressive r*pe to a lesbian. on the other end, most het women will never that viscerally disgusted by the idea of intimacy with a woman, they don't desire it, but they know and have female anatomy themselves and female genitalia isn't as weaponizable and physically endangering as male either. if you asked most het-attracted women, they'd still choose to be assaulted by a woman if they were forced into such an awful choice. most of them are so lesbophobic and heteronormatively brainrotted anyway that they wouldn’t even perceive lesbian sex as 'real' so being r*ped by a woman wouldn’t be as traumatic for most. so while all r*pists should die eternally in the pits of hell no matter the compatibility of their orientation and their victim's, you are simply lesbophobic and insanely cruel if you think that the doubly inhumane: homophobic and misogynistic 'corrective' r*pe isn't most horrific and traumatizing to lesbians in particular.
So first of all i think you're like completely misplacing your anger, hope it made you feel better to type all that out at least? Like I think you've misunderstood my post maybe lmao, because the POINT of that post about "no prostitutes are lesbians because any real lesbian would kill themselves rather than get touched by a male is very unkind TO LESBIANS who have been sexually abused by men or prostituted. But maybe because I suggested I think its fucked up to say that "osa" women suffer less from being raped you don't care abt the rest.
So to clarify, I dont think attempting to quantify who suffers from rape "the most" is a reasonable conversation to have, it's neither helpful nor compassionate to any victims of sexual assault.
You can recognize that corrective rape is awful (it is and I've never said otherwise) and think that.
Why do we need to build a hierarchy of the different types of sexual abuse and assault lmao? Who does that help? What gives you the right to quantify the pain of other people as well? I could hit you with "well what about victims of incest?" Or something like that and maybe you would double down or make a concession "well okay, under those circumstances MAYBE it's as bad for """osa""" women to be raped as it is for lesbians" but the point of what I'm saying is actually I think that this conversation is gratuitous and I think we've lost by entertaining it at all. You can have a conversation about factors which might exacerbate the suffering caused by sexual assault/abuse without devolving into "and that's why none of you will ever suffer like *I* have suffered" etc and so on. Why does it even seem attractive to you to feel like no one could ever understand how particularly damaged you are? Would you not rather try to relate to people who are trying to reach out through similar experiences to you than like languish alone like this? Like refuse to let people relate to you and then claim that they can't/won't? Idk lol

Got a couple of questions from the Artist Ask Game I reblogged a bit ago from someone who asked to be anon-ized! (So, if you're shy, that is an option! I'll still know who you are, but the world doesn't have to.)
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by.
I feel like maybe I'm lucky that this hasn't happened in awhile or in ways that bothered me often, haha! But back in college I remember getting pretty salty about this happening once and so that stuck with me. During constructive criticism time, someone's sole comment on my work for one assignment was that it looked Tim Burton-y.
In that it had goth theme matter and some stripes and some lurid colors, sure, I guess? If Burton was your only other exposure to spooky themed art by nerdy goths. In an animation-related class in art school. I think Burton and I shared some inspirational overlaps in a fondness for German Expressionism and 1960's Hammer films, but stylistically, Burton's aesthetic tends to play with odd proportions and distorted forms far more than my work did (or does). If I had been drawing inspiration from Burton and had intended to do a Burton-esque piece, I would have tried to include those traits and not stuck with an approximation of my own style and a late 60s/early 70's palette.
Also, as constructive criticism, this was not helpful. It was clear from the tone that she was dismissive of my piece based on it's "Burton-esque" qualities, but she didn't come out and say anything useful. Did she hate Burton, but begrudgingly agree that Technicolor goth was working for my spooky scene? Did she think this perceived Burton-esque style was holding back my piece? Impossible to tell.
I managed to dig up the file, but given that this was for a class in Illustrator and Flash (neither of which I ever got comfortable or good at using, lmao) and I don't have either of those programs now, it got a little mangled when I asked Photoshop to open it. But I think we can all agree: not particularly Tim Burton-y!
Tumblr media
(please don't ever ask me to use Illustrator or Flash again. I will cry. the only part I enjoyed about this project was picking music and sound effects...and jumpscaring my class at 9am in the morning.)
26. What’s a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended.
Hmm...again a benefit of being relatively obscure on the internet means that I rarely get people projecting wildly on my art. And also, if it matters how things are interpreted, I will usually include that in my comments or descriptions below a piece. I'm sure it's happened! But apparently I am less bothered by that than by uselessly-framed dubiously-constructive criticism comparing me to Tim Burton, so I recall nothing right now.
I'll pivot this to writing and tell you about the wildest feedback I ever got.
I took a short story writing class waaaaay back when I was in community college in my hometown. It was very much full of the community. Our big assignment was a short story which the class would read, write comments on, and discuss in class. I wrote a version of the fairy tale "The Fisherman and His Wife" about an aspiring artist with an ambitious wife. Rather than a fish, our protagonist meets a strange being in his dreams and helps this being out, because to the being, the dangers in dreams are real. In thanks, the being grants the artist inspiration and success in the real world. Like in the fairy tale this escalates and things get weirder and weirder in the dreamscape, until the mysterious being gets fed up and punishes the artist and his wife.
After class, one of my classmates, an older woman, approached me, convinced that I did "dreamwork" to have written of lucid dreaming and the weird symbolism of dreams so well. I tried my best to accept this as a compliment. But lady, where ever you are, I was and always have been just a weirdo who loves using dreams as an excuse to go wild with surreal almost-logic and weird descriptions and symbolic landscapes.
I think this was the first time in my life where I was really sharing work with strangers and having strangers come to conclusions about me based on my writing and so it felt and feels bigger than it is.
And while I'm not upset about this conclusion being drawn and can definitely understand that this lady was excited to discover I had written something that resonated so strongly with her passions that she assumed I shared them....it did feel kinda weird and put me in a weird position to have her approach me assuming I did dreamwork rather expressing that it reminded her of dreamwork and asking me if was into such things.
Heh, both of these questions kinda made me think of situations where people made an assumption about me and my work and acted on that, rather than leaving me any space to explain or discuss. Very....
Tumblr media
Anyway! That was a lot of words! It turns out, I am very verbose! Feel free to scroll way back to the beginning to find that link to the Artist Ask Game to ask me more questions and see if I can stay on topic!

ooohhhh permission to word dump in your ask box??
but no my head is mostly [happy static], i'm just thinking a lot about names and how the 'infantilizing' joke name JollyBaby uses as its public name isn't all THAT dissimilar from "Murderbot", in that can probably both be taken as jokes on the way humans perceive them, except "Murderbot" is private because identity and perception and direction are things it's still struggling with, and the name "SecUnit" is safe, allowing an amount of ambiguity and freedom with regards to "feelings" and "friendship" and "having to decide your life's direction for yourself"
like, yeah humans do basically see SecUnits as murderbots, which is funny and a joke because it's wrong - SecUnit is not a bot, and it is not optimized for Murder; that isn't its job because it is not a combat bot and why would it need to spend so much time babysitting humans then. but also it deactivated its governor module after an incident where it killed its clients, and it isn't actually sure how or why that went down. so maybe "murderbot" isn't so wrong. which is not very funny. and even in NE, Thiago is very pointed about insinuating that SecUnit could have left some Targets alive, and either chose not to or can't help defaulting to killing. which, SecUnit doesn't think he's right or anything, but it rankles. and it Knows that calling itself "murderbot" is going to go down so badly
and then you have Murderbot 2.0, who does not have any of that, uh. baggage. 2.0 does not consider its name private because 2.0 knows exactly what it's for, why it's here, wherr it's going, and how to get to the finish line, and none of that is in conflict with its designation as "Murderbot". 2.0 has its "win condition" written in.
and at the end of Network Effect, seeing SecUnit verbalize a sense of belonging (not as an object, but as a person-with-a-Home) as well as a desire and direction. and surrounded by people who would hear "Murderbot" and associate it with security rather than The Terminator. hhhhgghogh
i think this turned out both longer and more incoherent than i planned for but mobile is a finicky creature that will not let me scroll up or edit so i am very sorry but ALSO thanks So Much for being the push that got me to finally pull this out of my eternal "to read" list. aaaa
ok first of all yall have 24/7 permission to come and word dump in my inbox anytime over whatever intersecting interests we have
and secondly "murderbot as a name is a sort-of joke except it's Not Funny" is a good point!! i guess BabysittingConstruct was taken?
[rest of text under cut]
it's that one night vale tweet that goes like "confused? sounds like you're human. good luck!" except it's not just humans (the audience is shocked and offended). life is so much simpler when you're just MurderWare 2.0: killware on your planet, having perfect alignment between its name and purpose? it's more likely than you think!
and that just brings So Many questions. at which point post-ganaka pit and/or the hack did 1.0 decide on a name? (or even decided to have one?) imo it's interesting that 2.0 has enough of 1.0's memory archives to recognisably be murderbot but doesn't automatically Nope at using murderbot as a name. 2.0's name/purpose alignment aside, it also means that whatever memories 1.0 felt was enough to maintain 2.0's integrity/prevent a killware spree did not also contain the idea that P.S. Hey We Don't Tell People We're Called Murderbot Thanks!!!! different subsets of memories or something.
(2.0 does point out this wasn't in its instruction set, but tbh it's pretty understandable that 1.0 didn't put it in, given it would obviously never think to use it. maybe it assumed 2.0 would use its local feed address if needed?) (except killware ain't got hardware lmao)
this is getting as long as your ask but names are just Very Neat. rereading the setting-feed-ID bit in fugitive telemetry and on the one hand i appreciate that indah didn't insist on it providing a ~Real~ Name Which Is Not SecUnit. but. on the other hand, this is (a) in line with her desire to post a warning of DANGEROUS SECUNIT ON BOARD *siren noises*, and (b) possibly closer to how inanimate software like secsystem is treated, since many preservation bots seem to have names (though idk if they set those in their feed)
ANYWAY names as in "word you call yourself" vs "identifier you want others to call you", etc etc. i don't think this was coherent either but i'm glad i managed to get you around to reading the books!! also you should check out the two short stories if you haven't already

Technoblade’s Dream SMP Character
Once the hero’s quest has been established and the goals have been laid out, all there is left to do is set out to achieve them. The hero, determined and willful, grows desperate in the face of looming and near undefeatable odds. Their ragtag team is strong in will, but not strong enough to fight against the massive forces of evil that assail them.
Enter the Ace. According to TV Tropes, “The Ace is someone who is ridiculously good at what they do, whatever that happens to be, and everyone knows it. People look up to them, envy them, and are in awe of them. They'll drive the protagonist to greater efforts either out of envy or by inspiring them.”
Does that sound familiar?
*ba ba badada ba ba badada ba ba badada ba*
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ TECHNOBLADE (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
I’m going to make this SO incoherent you thought you’d be able to read this??? *slams papers on table* WRONG i am Back on my Bullshit
Anyway Technoblade fits the TV Tropes description of the ace among a few other tropes and using this information we can draw some interesting parallels between Techno and Roy Mustang as well as potentially project ways the smp plot could develop. In this essay I will-
WhEres tHe eSsAy OP-
HERE you may stop complaining i have provided what nobody asked for.
The main characteristic of the Ace is just that they’re so overpowered. They’re just like terrifyingly overpowered and it makes them a really interesting character. Often paired with other character tropes like being really dead inside, really dramatic, everyone’s favorite, and is often paired with some really traumatizing backstory that made them the way they are. They’re also often used as human weapons because they’re So Strong that they can be turned on entire cities and just demolish them.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with roy Mustang because I remember more of Roy’s plot than Levi’s lmao
Roy Mustang was an incredibly ambitious young man who sought out fire alchemy, and once he mastered it pledged himself to the military. Because fire alchemy was so incredibly dangerous, once he mastered it he was literally like a walking nuclear weapon. The military used Roy along with a few other alchemists to commit genocide against the people of Ishval, but Roy did a lot of the heavy lifting because he was, well, a weapon of mass destruction.
Technoblade, similarly, has always been recognized as incredibly powerful even before he went in search of Great Wealth and Greater Power. He came back from his journeys with six wither skulls and honestly probably more that he’s saving for future usage. Tommy thought whitelisting Technoblade would be a good idea to use him to overthrow Manburg, which Tommy knew he couldn’t do on his own. “You really think you can destroy Manburg without my help, Tommy?”
Never fear! The blade is here! Here to protect the squishy main character from all of the people that might do him wrong or kill him before Technoblade wants him dead. “I have the Blade.”
One thing that Roy has that Technoblade doesn’t have are his *:・゚✧Morals*:・゚✧
Except that isn’t quite true is it? Technoblade does have morals just not ones that we’d like. His anarchy, and whenever those morals get violate, he goes berserk and kills everything in his path. Sound familiar? If it doesn’t just trust me that Roy does the same exact thing.
Technoblade is unfortunately one of those characters who believes that all of humanity are the bad guys (if given governmental power). He’s been quoted saying (paraphrased), “This destruction is the work of one person, imagine what would happen in the hands of an organized government.”
In this way, Technoblade fulfills another character trope, Then Let me be evil. Humans are the real monsters and the only way to defeat them is to be as evil as he perceives them to be. Technoblade then ironically ends up blowing up Manburg out of his fear that letting a government exist there would be even worse. This is also somewhat similar to Mustang in that Mustang understood the evils of government and was horrified by them, but Mustang thought that he needed to take control for anything to be done properly rather than wanting everything destroyed.
Technoblade repeatedly says that he is trying to prevent the evils of government and tries to remind the audience that he isn’t just allied with Chaos like Dream and Wilbur, so he breaks the Anarchy is Chaos trope that so often occurs, “While anarchy and chaos are not mutually exclusive (chaos is anarchic, although it often devolves into despotism, but anarchy is not necessarily chaotic) such an un-mindset is properly called nihilism, the belief in nothing. However, the actual definition of Anarchism is the belief that rulership should not exist (as indicated in its Greek roots, an- [no] -arkhos [ruler]).”
WhAT WILL HE DO NEXT
From a storytelling perspective someone else would generally catch up to him and be on the same level of power so that the story wouldn’t be completely unbalanced but come on, who’s going to actually do that? Even with all his gear, awesamdude almost definitely can’t take Techno in a fair 1v1 so Techno’s place as the most powerful on the server is fairly well protected.
“The villain normally gets to this point by being rejected by the resident morality enforcers and treated to demonization and assumptive behavior. They just cannot get a break; even if they try to do good deeds, it will only lead to being horrifically punished for them at worst and having them be disregarded or treated as insincere attempts at fostering good will at best. As they see it, their reputation is so tarnished that there is absolutely no way of changing anyone's mind that they are not a monster. So what is the use of trying to be anything other than the monster which they are already seen as?” -TV Tropes
Technoblade gave his gear to Pogtopia and they set up a government, betrayed him, and then robbed him. Rejected from society he moves into the winter wasteland. Or at least tries because awesamdude has already been there
Now perhaps he will stop playing so much by his morals and trying to win people over onto his side. Wilbur is dead, his ties to society are severed. Nothing is holding him back anymore from destroying everything. Maybe that means taking over everything and setting up his own form of “government” making him technically a dictator the likes of which the smp has never seen before.
We’ll see c:

What is your opinion on straight passing privilege? I (bi) don’t think it exists, but a close (lesbian) friend of mine insists that it does bc “You can hold hands with your SO (nb cis passing man) in public without risking being the victim of a hate crime.” I have been researching but keep seeing this same argument coming up, and I’m unsure and don’t want to be making anyone upset if I’m being ignorant here.
I think that there's a lot of fucked up internet politics around who is and isn't allowed in the community. Which is ridiculous.
Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Pan, Poly, Ace, Aro, Trans, Intersex, etc.
The only people who shouldn't be in the community are cishets, and pedos, none of that 'it's a sexuality' nonsense, it's predation.
The concept of straight-passing is ridiculous, primarily because it's all based on assumptions. If you're in an m/f relationship, and you are both cis and heterosexual, it's straight.
But here's the catch, if you identify as any LGBPT+ then it's not straight.
Two trans people in an m/f relationship is not straight passing.
Two bi people in an m/f is not straight passing, it's queer babes, it's in the name. If you're bi and your partner is like, straight, it's still queer from your side of the fence.
It's the 'pick a side' argument from another direction, this straight passing nonsense. Where you are villified by the straights if you have a same-sex relationship (or fetishised, let's be real, every part of the acronymn has it's own p*rn category aimed at straight people with a kink), and if you have a relationship with the opposite gendered person, the queer community gets cranky.
Two things:
1) Is this friend between 13 and 25? Bc they could still be working this out or being mentored by t*rfs, or had some bad info. IT could be jealousy or fear of being open where you live. Perhaps you could question what makes her say that; has she had a bad experience, or did someone say this to her. where are you Are you in america? are there snake wielding jesus warriors near you? Blink SOS if you need an escape route, child
2) Who wins when everyone in the queer community is divided and policing one another? Telling everyone off for dating this person or that person or not at all
I didn't get an invite to the big queer conference to make these decisions, so like, they're not valid. It's some pocket of internet active idiots who think they can speak for everyone.
What we need to do is stop pulling this bullshit on one another and get back to asking just why the fuck it's not okay for people who are perceived as not-straight or cis etc to hold hands in public.
There's a problem for every facet of the acronym, babes and dudes and theys. Lesbians are heavily sexualised by straight cis dudes. Gays are heavly fetisihed by straight cis women. to the point where even saying 'I'm gay' is considered to be an obscene, sexual act that you should not let children be exposed to.
And there's always someone from the opposite gender who thinks they 'are confused' or 'haven't met the right (gender) person yet', or 'they could fix them with their magic genitals' or mumbled religious nonsense. There's such intense stereotypes that people can't stand women who look butch, but also you can't 'really' be a lesbian unless you are' or gay men can't just be, like, a normal dude, instead of some flamboyant in-your-face charicature.
Of course people who match the stereotype exist, too. And they get no respect for fitting into the stereptypes either, it's just another reason for disrespect. There's no winning.
Bi's can't talk to anyone without hearing a question of a threesome come up or being attacked from either side for coice of partner.
Pans, same, but also kitchenware jokes. Both Bi and Pan are considered sluts and whores and can't decide or are going to cheat, etc. Or the 'you're being special snowflakes', 'choose a side', 'you're secretly gay and won't admit / you're secretly straight and want attention' etc.
Ace/Aro - everyone under this banner gets the whole 'you just haen't found the right person' or 'when you're older/you're a late bloomer' or 'how do you know?' or 'maybe you're straight/gay and haven't worked it out yet?' invalidating them completely and trying to push sex onto them. The queer community has always let Ace and Aro in under the Bi banner, and they are welcome. But the internet community, usually young people, are tearing each other to shreds over it lmao.
Chill.
Non-binary, trans, intersex. They have been here for ages, but people from one community try to destroy their credibility, despite them existing since humanity has. It's big on p*rn and fetish sites too, lot of straight dudes think these things are hot and sexy, but would spit on trans people in the street. Hypocrites (I mean, every second low-brow comedy movie out there makes a thai-l*dyb*y joke, and how it 'doesn't count' like yikes).
Nb has only just been recognised, which is funny bc society literally made up gender and the rules and pretended that was how its encoded in DNA lmao.
Transpeople have it bad though. Between the cis straights, the cis queer community (primarily t*rfs and those who fall for misinformation) and the fetishists, and the medical community who treats them like an illness rather than people. Like, they are afforded respect if they 'pass', but even then it's still an EW factor.
Transwomen are seen as 'men in dresses who want to break into women's spaces' and treated horrifically; assaults are very high. Transmen are seen as butch women, and 'gender tr*itors' by the Crazy Motherfuckers we mentioned before; their assaults are high. They're not considered Real People unless they meet the ridiculously high standards for each gender; unless they perform Right.
I remember, but did not understand at the time bc I recall i was little, that there was a gameshpw bachelorette style and there was a big twist. You know what the twist was? That the bachelorette they'd been dating and trying to win over... was trans. I don't think that she knew it would be the big twist, either; of the two men remaining, bother were angry and one might have been sick. Might be on youtube.
But like, that's funny to the non-queer community. They put a huge fucking target on this woman's back, put her in danger of being hurt, abused, killed, by anyone who watched it. By the men who she had 'lied to' as they chose to frame it, of their weird white american families who could have sought revenge. Like yikes.
And intersex people (called h*rmaphrodites for a long time even by medical personnel) were also a p*rn category and/or medical curiosity for centuries. Not to mention all the cases of parents who just went with 'make them a (specific gender)' if there was mixed presentation, at birth, and got mad at the kids for being like "Hey so, you flipped the coin wrong and I'm ___" even thought the potential for this was always on the cards.
And the parents often make a big messa bout how their baby ___ is dead and gone, even if they DO accept the person/child as who they really are. It's like, I get it they have changed but you didn't mourn their first haircut or lost baby tooth like this and that was change too, chill.
-
Straight-passing is a projection and a weapon. Like, is it the people in the relationship's fault that society looks at the pair and decides they are m/f, straight and cis? Nah, it's what people are conditioned assume and that's on them.
We can't bring it into the queer spaces and keep perpetuating that shit, because it's nonsense. Queer people are dying in other countries and your friend wants to being smart-assed about the fact you hold hands with your nb datemate in public?
-
Nonsense. That's right up there with t*rfs and the gold-star bullshit that was going on for a few years there. Probs still is among the younger people lmaoooo.
'Passing priviledge' is a myth, and it is used to hurt people. Vulnerable people and those who need support / guidance and assistance from their queer communities more than ever. So try to talk to your friend or try The Whole Friend disposal services, either way, chill.
The real issue here is that any of us are at risk of a hate crime for daring to even show affection in public. That even in safe spaces, 'allies' and those wise enough not to be openly homo/trans/bi/pan/ace/aro/other phobic are still side-eyeing you and wanting to talk 'for you' without listening to the community itself.
We have bigger issues than this, and your friend (and some others on the internet) need to get a grip and prioritise.
[Insert strained analogy about being pro-child but childfree in a suburb where everyone got married out of high school and anticipates you and your partner will too, no matter how often you remind them No Thanks. But you babysat the other day and people thought you and your partner looked like 'naturals' when you took child to the park and played with them. And you remind them, hey, chill, we like kids too but it's not for us. And they get pissy and pushy.]
---------
I can only point it out from my perspective, I'm certain there other queer people from the above acronymn community who can present their thoughts on the matter to and what it means to them.
Thanks for the question, good-bi.

I'm reading through some of your meta and in the one about WWX possibly weaponizing MXY being gay you mention how MXY being a molester was fabricated. I agree with this but I always thought that this was a personal headcanon and didn't realize that it was supported by canon. If you're up to it, please may you point me to where it might say this?
Hi anon,
I’m sad to report that there isn’t a scene where JGY admits before a jury that yes, it was I, I fabricated the claims against Mo Xuanyu, who was a hapless victim all along! which would be convenient for winning arguments quickly and easily. But, I promise you, so long as we read between the lines, it is undeniable that we are meant to understand by the end of the novel that the accusations leveled against Mo Xuanyu were baseless and that he was another victim of JGY’s (and NHS’s!) machinations.
Beyond a purely thematic reading of the novel, which would  therefore highlight  that the theme around how public opinion is willing to believe accusations and condemn without material or sensible proof (particularly so when it comes to people who do not hold a lot of power within society, those who are the Other) is one that is repeated across many characters, the narrative reveal of JGY’s true personality and actions indicates that the accusations against MXY were just  another ploy of JGY’s.
At the very beginning of the novel, when WWX looks through Mo Xuanyu’s things, he’s able to piece out together that Mo Xuanyu’s “lunacy” seemed rooted in a deep and paranoiac fear of.... something. MXY didn’t just get thrown out of the Sect in disgrace--something clearly happened to him, or he clearly witnessed something that scared him out of his senses.
“after he returned, he seemed to have gone completely mad—although no one could tell what kind of shock he’d suffered. He had good days and bad ones. It was as if he had been scared witless.” [Chapter 1]
Further into the novel, it is revealed that MXY didn’t actually harass his “peers” but actually only one person: Jin Guangyao. Right after this reveal, we also learn that MXY used to treat JGY with the utmost respect and deference. While Jin Ling seems to misunderstand this past deification of JGY as a side-effect of MXY’s presumed feelings for him, as readers we can see how it actually raises doubts into the claims leveraged against MXY, as it would then seem very out of character for MXY to disrespect JGY by harassing him (especially if one considers that the risks of harassing his powerful half-brother definitely would not outweigh the benefits....).
“Don’t listen to [JGY],” said Wei Wuxian. “Let me tell you—when you grow older, you’ll find out that there are more and more people you want to beat up, but you’ll have to force yourself to get along with them nicely. So, since you’re still young, go beat up all the people you want. At such an age, if you don’t have a few proper fights, your life won’t be complete.”
Jin Ling’s face betrayed faint yearning, yet he still sounded contemptuous, “What are you talking about? Shushu’s advice is for my own good.”
After he spoke, he suddenly remembered that the past Mo Xuanyu had always regarded Jin Guangyao as a deity. He definitely would not have disagreed with Jin Guangyao in any way. Yet, now he was saying not to listen to him. Was it that he really did not hold any improper thoughts toward Jin Guangyao anymore?
(we also learn that Zewu-jun never knew about what supposedly happened, or even who MXY was, which again.....fishy.... JGY what are you hiding...... not mentioning someone harassed you to your bff is one thing, but not introducing him to your half-bro?.... )
Then! Almost right after we learn all this new information, it is also revealed through WWX’s paperman adventures and NMJ’s adventures that JGY is not who he has presented himself to be: he is a master manipulator, who has lied and continues to lie to preserve his position and to eliminate people he perceives as threatening the place he carved for himself in sweat and tears and blood.
At this point, the deal is pretty much sealed: we have an unreliable witness in the man we now know to be able to do incredibly scary and cruel things (a knowledge that will only be reinforced by the end of the novel once NHS’ plan is completed). What actually happened, how MXY went from someone who deified JGY to someone who would need to be sent away in disgrace and scared into silence and compliance, all this is not told to us by the novel. It is possible that JGY might have seen MXY as a potential accomplice to his deeds (like he did his other half-brother, XY) (EDIT: I DREAMED UP THAT XY was one of JGS’s bastard children, please disregard it), or that he might have seen MXY as a potential threat to his position because of they shared a father--honestly, I can see many possibilities here!
Also, it is important to consider that even the claim of MXY’s “lunacy”  is pretty fraught and ambiguous. The novel ends up setting up the idea that MXY’s erratic behaviour was related to him being scared (as we see in the and frustrated at the injustice he received at the hands of both the Jin Sect and his family (for example, this piece of shino meta)
Finally, it’s a good time to remember that even MXY’s sacrifice was not a decision he made on his own: he was once again the victim of a mastermind with much more power and influence than he could ever dream to have. After all, the novel takes pain to explain to us that NHS’s schemes for revenge depended on MXY sacrificing himself (passage under the cut because this post is getting long!)
“Nie-zongzhu,” Wei Wuxian asked again. “I heard that you often travel between the Gusu Lan sect and the Lanling Jin sect, am I right?”
“That’s right.”
“Then did you really not recognize Mo Xuanyu?”
“Ah?” Nie Huaisang’s face twitched slightly.
“I remember that the first time I met you after my soul had been offered into his body, you acted as if you did not recognize me, and even asked Hanguang-jun who I was. Mo Xuanyu was then entangled anyhow with Jin Guangyao during that time* and was able to access even his secret collections, and you often went to find Jin-zongzhu to complain. Even if you and Mo Xuanyu were not familiar with each other, did you really not see him before at all?”
Nie Huaisang scratched his head, saying, “Wei-xiong, Jinlintai is so huge, I can’t possibly recognize everyone, even if I’ve seen them, I can’t remember. Moreover…”
Looking rather awkward, he continued, “You know about Mo Xuanyu’s identity back then, it’s slightly…...the Lanling Jin sect had tried their best to hide it, so it wouldn’t have been surprising if I had never met him before. Even Xichen-ge may not have met him before.”
“Oh, that’s true. Zewu-jun did not know who Mo Xuanyu was either.”
“Right! And what I don’t understand is, even if I had seen Mo Xuanyu before, why would I pretend not to recognize him? Was there such a need?”
Wei Wuxian laughed and replied, “Nothing much, I just thought it strange and was casually asking.
However, he thought, He was simply trying to see whether the ‘Mo Xuanyu’ he met was the real one.
For someone who was said to have been cowardly and weak, where would have Mo Xuanyu gotten the courage to sacrifice himself and offer his soul?
And as for Chifeng-zun’s left hand, why was it discarded? It could not be that Jin Guangyao would accidentally lose it.
Moreover, why was it that it happened to appear right at the Mo family residence, just when Wei Wuxian had been reincarnated, but not somewhere else?
If Chifeng-zun’s body had been buried by the QingheNie sect, would Nie Huaisang, who had always respected his older brother, not notice that his body had disappeared all these years?
Wei Wuxian was inclined to believe an alternative situation.
[...]
As such, [NHS] thought of another person; Mo Xuanyu, who had just been kicked out of the Golden Pavilion.
Perhaps in order to let Mo Xuanyu listen to him, Nie Huaisang had already spoken to him before and heard from an upset and anguished Mo Xuanyu that he had seen one of Jin Guangyao’s scrolls of forbidden spells recording a certain ancient demonic spell. He then took advantage of the Mo Xuanyu, who was then humiliated and bullied by his clan, to persuade him to perform the spell as revenge**.
And which fierce corpse would he summon?
Naturally, he would summon the Yiling Patriarch.
Unable to bear the days of humiliation any longer, Mo Xuanyu finally drew the array, and Nie Huaisang also took the chance to throw out the hot potato that was burning his hand: ChiFeng-Zun’s left arm.
From there on, his plan had begun and he no longer had to spend his own time and energy to find Nie Mingjue’s remaining body, leaving the dangerous and troublesome job to Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. All he had to do was watch their actions closely. [Chapter 109]
*I changed the translation here, which originally said that “Mo Xuanyu was harassing Jin Guangyao” since I find (at least with my limited linguistic skills lmao) that the original is much more ambivalent. The clause is  莫玄羽当年好歹也纠缠过金光瑶, and the use of  好歹 signals to me toward ambivalence, which is further compounded by the fact that the verb  纠缠 does not necessarily translate to harassment. So I doubt that the original intent was to suggest that WWX was saying to NHS: shouldn’t you have known the dude who was harassing JGY? Anyone who knows Chinese more than I do is free to come and correct me if I am completely wrong in my assessment.
**Okay I changed the translation here again because the translation I was working with made it seem as if MXY was motivated by shame? but the original Chinese says  他便怂恿当时饱受族人欺辱的莫玄羽 which to me clearly points to his treatment by the Mo family/clan and to the fact that it was something being done unto him, not a state of mind he had.

working that muse to the bone while I've got her lol
Title: Winter's Frost Chapter: 16/? Fandom: MCU Rating: R to be on the safe side Pairing: Loki/Bucky Summary: Loki never told anyone the real reason he became so obsessed with Midgard. Much better to let them think he wanted to hurt his brother than draw their attention to the one thing in the universe that makes the God of Mischief truly vulnerable. WARNINGS: all of the emo! Reference to trauma Notes: I cried writing this. I hope that's an indication of quality and not just that I'm pathetic lmao
It had grown quite late. With Bucky sound asleep on the sofa, Eira still nestled safely in his arms and even Darcy retiring to bed some time ago, Loki was left alone with his brother. They'd moved to sit outside to avoid waking any of the house's slumbering occupants, both having changed into simple Midgardian-style clothing in the hopes of escaping any unwanted attention. Staring up at the clear black sky, they sat in almost companionable silence for a long moment; oddly, it was Loki who broke it first.
"Go on."
"Hm?"
He rolled his eyes and waved one hand with a flourish. "You've been nearly silent all evening. It must be tearing you apart not to be the center of attention; not to even speak. Get it out. All the judgement, the mocking, the condescension. Let's have it."
"Quite a story you told today."
"I haven't lied nor embellished a thing."
Chuckling, Thor held up his hand to forestall any further defensive jabs from his weary, stressed brother. "No, I know. For all your tricks in this life, you've rarely outright lied." He glanced back at the house, and the most remarkable look transformed his face; if Loki didn't know him better, he'd swear the oaf looked almost... empathetic. "Seeing you together, and hearing what he's been through-"
"Tip of the ice berg. I've seen the memories he hasn't yet regained access too. They're barbarous."
"No, I'm sure..." Turning a level, surprisingly gentle gaze on Loki, he told him, "None of that story was for my benefit, I know that. And I don't think there's a force in the universe that could make you lie to him."
Unable to bear sympathy from any member of the house of Odin, Loki turned back to the sky, pretending to be transfixed by the stars. "No. Even before they raped his mind for decades and scrambled his sense of reality, I'd have died before ever lying to him."
"Remarkable." Thor nudged him, and Loki could hear the smile in his voice. "The God of Mischief, in love! I never thought I'd see the day."
"That's because you haven't been paying attention."
"So you keep telling me."
With an exasperated sigh, he forced himself to look at his adoptive brother again. "Not once in over a thousand years have you ever bothered truly getting to know me. Don't presume now to know what's in my nature. You've only ever been wrong."
"Then tell me," Thor shot back, voice still soft but now with an edge to it that the Trickster couldn't quite identify. "How does this love story end?"
When did this moron learn to cut so deeply without benefit of a blade? Tense all over again, Loki turned away and stared at the dusty ground. "I don't know."
"You must have some idea of-"
"I can't see the future, Thor," he snapped. "I'm not a witch."
With the lightest of touches to his hand, Thor finished, "Of how you want it to end. I may not know you as well as I'd thought, brother, but I know enough. I know there's no way you grieved this man alone for fifty years and spent twenty driving yourself mad trying to rescue him, without a single thought to what might come next."
"I'd thought to bring him home to Asgard," Loki admitted with a shrug. "When I thought Asgard was home. Now... Frankly, Thor, I have no idea. Eira's birth and then being held hostage by Thanos on his deranged venture... I'm not even Aesir. Everything I'd once thought... It's all changed. My world wasn't simply turned upside down, it was taken from me. I feel I'm still spinning in the abyss with no hope of landing anywhere."
"That's the most I've ever heard you speak at one time." Thor glanced at the house again and snorted. "To me, anyway."
"Don't read too much into it. I've had no one but a baby and my captors to speak to for several years." That wasn't the true reason for his candor and they both knew it, but Loki hoped his brother would be merciful and not point out that his life and everything he held dear all depended partially on convincing Thor not to drag him back to Asgard in chains, nor reveal his location to Odin.
The Avengers, he felt he could avoid easily enough, but Odin and Thanos... They were the real danger to his little family. He knew he couldn't hide from either of them for long, not with a traumatized, amnesiac lover and a helpless baby to look after. Both Bucky and Eira needed stillness; they needed a place to stop and to orient themselves. Eira simply couldn't grow up on the run, and Bucky had seen too much upheaval in his life already, since long before the war and the draft.
It hit him all at once, then, and suddenly Loki was a child idolizing his strong, perfect brother again. For all that Thor had hurt and humiliated him, the realization that he was all Loki had left to lean on was hitting home.
For the first time in longer than he cared to calculate, Thor perceived his distress without him having to say a word. In an instant, the already small gap between them was closed and Loki was enfolded in his brother's abnormally large arms. That broke open the flood gate and shattered all his hard-won and carefully maintained control. Shaking violently with the force of his sobs, Loki clung to Thor with all his might, and somewhere under all the pain and fear and hopelessness, he felt a small, warm glow of gratitude for this thoughtless, stubborn meathead.
"I'm sorry." He was a bit surprised to note that Thor sounded as though he was crying, as well. "You're right, I never once really tried to understand you, and I'm so sorry!"
"None of you ever have," Loki choked out, trying desperately to get his emotions back under control. He'd been too stressed for too long; now that he had his first moment in years to breathe, to feel, it was all coming down on him at once. With a pitiful exhalation that was supposed to be a derisive laugh, he muttered, "At least now I know why I'm so different. Dress me up however you like, but a Jotun will never fit into a house full of Aesir."
"Loki, I don't care that you're a Frost Giant – I don't even care that you're the world's smallest Frost Giant." That got a half-hearted laugh out of him, but at least this one sounded like a laugh. He righted himself just in time to see the last traces of Thor's weak attempt at a teasing smile. "No matter where you've come from or what's gone wrong between us, you're my brother and I love you."
As he swiped furiously at his tears, Loki grumbled under his breath, "It is utterly humiliating how nice that is to hear."
"Face it, you're stuck with this 'big, dumb puppy' forever."
With a startled but finally sincere laugh, Loki nodded. "It would appear so. You're even more stubborn than your father."
"Our father."
"Oh, no. We're not there yet."
Thor grinned, nudging him again. "Alright, fair enough. He'd only muck things up, anyway, and you might lose your daughter."
"Unacceptable."
"I agree. So, we keep Father out of things until we can sort them out properly. That leaves only one other direction we can go in for help – and don't embrace the family stubbornness yourself, you know you need help."
"Don't say it." Loki cringed, covering his face with one hand. "Do not say The-"
"We need The Avengers."
"I should have just lit you on fire in Siberia!"

🤔 / 😱 / 👿
@undxroos
//
🤔: Any angst tropes you’re not really fond of?
Cheating. I get it happens but it’s so often a cop out plot device for thinking out some actual drama, my muses aren’t the type that would cheat and would probably be devastated if it did happen, I have my own life experience of that fallout happening with my parents, etc. It just holds literally no appeal to me. Now can I do cheating accusations for some other reason and having to sort through that mess? Depends, if it’s organic, sure. But the “oh whoops you caught me fucking someone else” memes? Ew. No thank you. Other than that, just outrageously inaccurate occurrences? Basically the “oh look we had a car accident or I got pushed slightly and now I have a miscarriage” one in movies makes me want to commit violence because that’s really not how that works. So things along that line, can’t do either. I need you to science out even your fantasy. I don’t care if it’s comic book bullshitted science, or dragons producing  two different chemicals from glands that allow them to breathe fire, just make it make sense for the love of all things holy.
😱: Has angst ever killed your motivation for thread(s)?
No, it’s resulted in me dropping everything to write the reply right then and there if it was painful enough. Like the more it hurts, and the more in-depth and lengthy the pain...the more likely it is I’m not going to be able to control myself and yeet a reply directly back. There’s a satisfaction in sharing the suffering I had in writing something that made me cry writing it lmao.
👿: What are your muse(s)’ fatal flaws? Any wishlists to do with them?
Rogue’s is she’s always going to question if she’s good enough and think she’s undeserving. Her ADHD (yes that’s how I see her if y’all don’t like it, too bad there’s other Rogues) doesn’t help, at all, whatsoever. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria is a bitch, as is overstimulation not helping an extremely feeling, passionate person who can sometimes see things a little too black and white to not lose their shit.
Nilza will cut and run if people get close. She’s also an addict and an adrenaline junkie. She could end up getting herself fucked up on a hunt, or in an accident. Have considered what her not being an alcoholic anymore would look like. Given her regular intake, withdrawal could be very dangerous for her, even in a hospital with medication helping the process. (movie/tv show cold turkey withdrawal...isn’t a thing? That can literally kill you). She also has no real trust of vast majority of people.
Farrar’s is his contentment with the status quo. He doesn’t really see himself as being able to do anything else with his life even if he wanted to. He doesn’t know how to set a life goal past the next hunt.
Sara’s is her fear of getting close to people as well as not being in control of things. She doesn’t like feeling helpless or vulnerable, thus falling naturally into a leadership position but out of patience when things are literally rock and hard place, or always carrying her weapons on her. Although they’re still problems, she is admittedly getting better with both of those.
Kaylee’s is failing those that need her. She’s perceived as strong both in character and physically, so she doesn’t like not being able to fully fix a situation. She will stretch herself thin trying to make sure everything is done perfectly.
Padmé’s quite literally fatal flaw is seeing the best of a situation and sticking to her moral ideals no matter the cost. Girlfriend, you don’t argue with the husband in the middle of a psychotic break, you nod along, and then you deal with it after he’s had a nap and a snickers (and five hundred hours of therapy).
Cisco’s is his love of dangerous women, that’s gonna bite him in the ass eventually xD (not really...maybe...depends on the verse). But in all seriousness he doesn’t have enough confidence in himself when it’s valid, but sometimes exhibits hubris. It’s a weird combo.

firewolf1117 refuckingceipts (it's all been removed now but people archived it)
this bitch:
When you say “All Cops are”, here’s what you’re really saying:
All Blacks are Criminals All Mexicans are Illegal All Americans are stupid, fat, and lazy All Rape Victims are liars All Suicide Posters are Attention Seekers All Muslims are Terrorists All LGBT deserve to die
Are you outraged yet? GOOD.It means I touched a nerve.
You would never, ever, EVER say those things about those groups of people because you KNOW that it’s not true, even in the slightest. There are so very very FEW Cops who are actually corrupt and using their power and position inappropriately.
So what gives you the right to say the same about cops? COPS! Who are practically SOLDIERS! EVERY DAY their family lives with the fear that they won’t return. EVERY DAY they put their lives in danger to PROTECT you! They, as a whole, deserve your RESPECT!!! MOST ALL “Brutality” cases are from the CRIMINAL fighting, disrespecting, grabbing a weapon, etc. If you’d just COOPERATE AND BE RESPECTFUL you’d be treated FAIRLY!! Cops don’t have the time to sort things out. Their snap second decisions PROTECT them AND nearby Civilians. You can’t possibly understand the FEAR AND TERROR they hold EVERY SECOND of EVERY DAY! So don’t you DARE judge them for mistakes.
and here’s the response of one brave user, this legend, this badass mofo, who replied to their bullshittery and got banned for a day for posting in the whiny crybaby bitch’s journal without permission:
Replying to this, because FireWolf1117 is intentionally spreading misinformation and hate. I don’t care if the staff is going to tell me off for this — for once, I care a little more about setting this right than following the Journal rule.
First of all, United States cops are legally not required to save civilians. It’s not considered unconstitutional, according to the case Warren v. District of Columbia (444 A.2d. 1, D.C. Ct. of Ap. 1981). To keep it short, cops can literally see crimes being committed and decide not to intervene if they feel like it. This has been quite common among police departments if you (objectively) compare the police’s actions during BLM protests and anti-lockdown protests.
Anyways, let’s get to your generalizing logic. I have to agree with you on one thing: generalizing is bad. No group should be generalized because of some rotten apples. However, this doesn’t count for cops. Here’s why not:
The police force isn’t a marginalized group. A police officer is a profession. A job. Cops are public servants. They work for the state, for the civilians. And that’s why they need to be held accountable for any misconduct they commit. Which is, unfortunately, is objectively not the case. According to statistics from https://mappingpoliceviolence.org, 99% of United States cops who have killed citizens have not been criminally charged, because police departments literally protect officers from getting tried. Of the 750+ shootings done by police this year, only four cops are getting tried. So much for “there are only a few corrupt ones”. Black people are also way less likely to carry a weapon compared to White people, while Black people get shot by cops thrice as likely.
What’s more, because the police force is a profession, people can quit being a police officer. This doesn’t count for most of the groups you mentioned: Black people can’t stop being Black, Mexican people can’t stop being Mexican, Americans can’t stop being American (also you including Americans kinda makes you look embarrassing lol no offense), rape victims can’t be ‘unraped’, Muslims (or even just Arabs in general) can’t stop being perceived as Muslims (even Sikhs get seen as Muslims nowadays…) and LGBTI+ people can’t stop being LGBTI+ (unless they discover they’re not). Police officers can literally take their uniform off and be perceived as normal human beings. As soon as they are on duty and take on their uniform, a huge responsibility awaits them. A responsibility that has been abused by them to the point that marginalized people will hesitate before calling the police, fearing that the police will either come too late or escalate the situation. Cops aren’t endangering their own lives. They’re endangering the lives of those they’re supposed to protect. No good person would shoot a man in his back SEVEN times for being 'aggressive’. No good person who claims to protect and serve would kneel on someone’s neck for eight minutes while that person was cooperating with them. No good person would shoot a completely innocent woman in her sleep because they raided the wrong house. (BTW, Breonna Taylor’s murderers are still walking free as if nothing happened.) No good person would shoot a 12-year-old kid for having a toy gun. No good person would kill a man in his car for… picking up his ID to show it to the cop. Just because you cooperate, doesn’t mean that you’re safe.
Your logic is clearly flawed, because you judge cops on their personality, and not on the bigger picture. All cops are “bastards” not because we see all of them are evil killing machines that shoot people on sight — it’s because they contribute to an oppressive system, whether it’s directly or indirectly. It’s more than 'just a few cops’: the government wants bad laws to be enforced, the prison system is getting used as a business model, minorities are forced to live in poor socioeconomic areas on purpose BY the government, gentrification exists, multi billionnaires are exploiting low-class working people even more, there’s a damn pandemic that’s not being taken seriously… And guess who’s at the front of keeping the fragile capitalist system intact? Right. The police. The face of the government, that’s laughing at Black people, people of color, disabled people, LGBTI+ people… No good cop exists, even if they’re nice to everyone. Good cops who speak out against the abuse of other cops get fired, because the police departments don’t want the truth to be exposed. If you truly want to be someone who saves people’s lives, then stop being a cop and get a better job, like a firefighter, an EMT, a psychologist… Anything that isn’t completely corrupted.
Even during the recent BLM protests, cops are showing off their power. They escalate situations without provocation more times than BLM protesters start shit. Also cops are committing literal war crimes by using tear gas and other chemicals against civilians (IT GOES AGAINST THE GENEVA CONVENTION FOR FUCK’S SAKE). Not so protective now, aren’t they? The only thing BLM protesters have hurt are cops’ ego. Trust me, protesters being a little mean to cops won’t ever be as bad as all the innocent lives cops have taken and covered up.
I want to go on forever, because I have a lot more to say (such as why “All Lives Matter” is reactionary and racist, how the police force was formed in the first place, how the effects of slavery and colonialism are still being felt by Black people to this day, how and why 'riots’ can be 'justified’), but I’ll leave it at this. At least I got to give counterarguments to your points. Take care and educate yourself! (Tip: stop watching FOX News and Infowars if you do that, you’re going to develop brainrot! ;__;)
ladies and gentleman of the jury, as you can see, this user not only came into this argument prepared, but they were civil and had links (that aren’t links now oop soz). they gave this bitch plenty of opportunity to learn and grow from this without attacking her.
but your bet your ASS the poor little white girl went crying to her daddy about people ATTACKING HER and BULLYING HER FOR HER OPINIONS!!!! she uses her anxiety as a get out of jail free card CONSTANTLY, bitching and moaning about how, and these are directly quoting from HER own journal:
MAY 29, 2020
I log in to this game to have fun and escape the stresses and problems of real life. I do NOT want to be going about my business, and see “BLM” in someone’s Trainer Card, and have to deal with a surge of overwhelming emotions (whether positive or negative). I simply cannot handle the Anxiety that results.
This is a GAME site. NOT a place to share your political, racial or other stances. PLEASE keep ALL such topics OFF this site. I understand you want to talk about them, and that’s fine. But out of respect for people like me, can you please do so in private with the people you know WANT to see and discuss it?
just admit you’re racist dude.
She uses CSS. SHE CAN FUCKING HIDE OTHER PEOPLE’S FUCKING CARDS. PEOPLE CAN TALK ABOUT WHATEVER THEY DAMN WELL PLEASE ON THEIR OWN DAMN PAGES. THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND YOU.
Also! You know she only put “whether positive or negative” to quell any hate she might’ve gotten because ANXIETY is usually not a positive emotion. There’s not even a positive CONNOTATION. and she hopes to be published by the end of the year lmfao yeah right.
and then, on JUNE 16, 2020:
I WAS going to make a post in response to the most recent announcement, but now I’m just too frazzled and upset about it. Still making a post. I’ll just be posting it off site so I can say things how I want to say them, and so I don’t have any in game repercussions.
Honestly, though. I log onto this site to ESCAPE reality. I do NOT want to see ANY stance on ANY “cause” ANYWHERE. NONE OF IT BELONGS HERE. NONE!!!! Because of this “decision”, I’m going to make one of my own. I am gone from this site until current affairs are resolved. Heck. Perhaps even after. I will NOT be a part of a site that allows…Ugh. NOT going to get into this here.
but like… she came back a month later lmao
OH AND!! Earlier this month on AUGUST 6, 2020 she posted this!
It really breaks my heart seeing derogatory remarks against Cops in people’s Trainer Cards. It’s upsetting that you feel that way, and even more so that you make your hatred so vehemently known.
Personally, I don’t know why any of those Cop comments are allowed. If someone had something in their Trainer Card against Religion, LGBT, or POC, I guarantee that statement would be removed. So why is it alright for people to make hateful, vile, disgusting remarks against Cops? Despite it being someone’s personal opinion, it’s still Hate Speech, and shouldn’t be allowed.
this bitch is part of the lgbt+ community. she’s part of a marginalized group.
The “"derogatory remarks”“ she’s talking about? #AllCopsAreComplicit #CopsStinky #AllCopsSuck
which brings us back to Exhibit A, ladies and gentlemen! Her equating #AllCopsAreComplicit and #CopsSTINKY to "All LGBT deserve to die” and a Shitton of other stereotypes. Well fucking done.
Despite bitching and moaning about I DONT WANNA SEE ANYTHING, despite there being ways she can fucking hide it HER DAMN SELF she chooses instead to bitch piss moan bitch piss moan bitch piss and fucking moan and then when someone calls her out on her genuinely harmful bullshit, pulls the wounded gazelle gambit, claims she’s being attacked, and puts in her Card that “anxiety attack! again! waaaah!” like anyone has a shred of sympathy left for her ugly ass. She can’t handle looking like the bad guy so she plays the anxiety card. She bitches about never having any friends, only depression and anxiety, and it’s like bitch no fucking wonder.
Both the top posts have been taken down, but the user who responded to her has gotten nothing but love for her mad courage in saying something when no one else dared.
Firefurrywolf made a halfassed apology (August 30, 2020) which I won’t go into but there is one line that sticks out to me because it’s such a goddamn lie:
When I state my opinion, I usually do so with grace and eloquence. I did not think about my actions this time.
… do you?
This is a GAME site. NOT a place to share your political, racial or other stances. PLEASE keep ALL such topics OFF this site.
Do you… really?
I log onto this site to ESCAPE reality. I do NOT want to see ANY stance on ANY “cause” ANYWHERE. NONE OF IT BELONGS HERE. NONE!!!!
I don’t think so. You vile, disgusting, manipulative, obnoxious, PRETENTIOUS, racist, terfy bitch.
Oh, before I forget, yeah. Terf. She looks like one too. All over her insta. Gross.
NOVEMBER 19, 2019
My response to a LGBT post in one of my writing groups.
I don’t know most of these terms within the community. Don’t really care to know either, cause your preferences won’t change my feelings about who you are. I probably should, though, cause the Its and Xes really confuse me.
I knew I was a Demi-Ace for a few years. I’ve also known that I was Poly since I was early teens. But I’m also attracted to beauty and care more about who you are as a person than your preferences, so apparently I’m Panaesthetic as well?
Also firm believer of “True Love Knows NO Bounds”
Her journal got moved to 18+ because there was a post talking about sex. Might’ve even been alluding to rape. On a CHILDREN’S SITE. In her CHILD-FRIENDLY journal. It sat there for at least two months. TWO MONTHS. But I will not be posting that here, but it’s still there if anyone wants to snoop. All of this is public. Well, it was. But at least minors won’t be exposed to this histrionic little whiny whitey who is absolutely drowning in her white privilege.
Just because she changed her pfp from her face to a shitty drawing she did doesn’t hide the fact that she’s white, and the worst kind of person with little to no actual coping skills.
She claims to be an artist, a writer, all this, blah blah, but then why doesn’t she channel any of it into her work so she can get fucking better at them? She says she’s working on losing weight, so do that. Instead of shrieking and stomping your fucking feet like a toddler at the peak of their terrible two’s, throwing tantrum after fucking tantrum on a CHILDREN’S SITE about your shitty stances, go for a fucking walk. Punch a fucking punching bag. Literally anything else. You’ll feel better, you’ll lose weight faster, you’d be keeping your vitriol to your damn self and no one will “attack” you.
“Are you ourtraged yet? GOOD. It means I touched a nerve!”
She fucking wanted a reaction. But couldn’t handle it when she actually got one. I’m so embarrassed. Grow some fucking thicker skin, you’re older than I am. Grow a pair and shut the goddamn FUCK up.
For now, the evil is defeated, and I rest my fucking case.

so I watched brief encounter last night because I was curious... I don’t understand what the main character meant by her committing the violence of falling inlove. I don’t think I understand how being in love could be violent- is it because she’s married?
hi anon! ahhhh! im so happy you decided to watch it! and then came to discuss with me pls do you know how delighted that makes me ;^; if youre not used to classic cinema, or even classic melodrama, i can see how the film would be a bit slow or a bit difficult to connect with. so i really appreciate you taking the time to watch and come up with questions for things. when i say this made my day i mean it lmaooo
the quote i believe youre pulling from is this:
I’ve fallen in love. I didn’t think such violent things could happen to ordinary people.
there are several layers to this statement - emotional, moral, political, societal, etc. im happy to break these down contextually so you can have a better understanding of why this statement is painful and, also, why love is an extremely violent experience. going under a cut because...i have this entire masters degree in film and im not using it so im gonna use it here lmao
at its most basic, yes, you are correct. she says love is a violent experience because she is already married. to love, really love, is an act of violence, especially when you are already promised and making a family to another person. there is an element of ruination here that plagues laura, love as a threat to the stability of the home and family. and we can see this when her son is playing in the street and gets into an accident - a completely innocuous event, but one she sees as an omen of her violence against her own family. karma, but at a level that would start a war among her family and community.
in most filmic universes, romantic comedies especially, we are used to the relatively easy expectations that come from learning to love someone - you meet, you flirt, you are both, ideally, free to experience these types of intense emotions, you come together, you separate (due to...any sort of obstacle), you come back together. in this traditional narrative, we are presented with the notion that falling in love happens in a linear fashion and that, once the two characters have ended their arc and achieved their happy ending, there is not much else that occurs. they lived happily ever after, ever after being an indeterminate amount of time in which we are meant to assume they exist within this state, ceaselessly.
in general, there are two types of love stories - tragedies and comedies. where romantic comedies (in the modern sense, and i am stressing modern sense) end with ‘happily ever after,’ the other alternative for lovers is death. you either overcome your initial obstacle, or you perish, in love, where love becomes a death. so where does that leave brief encounter? neither party have been put to death, but the death is of the will, the passion. and, in brief encounter, it is killed by morality. by choice. i will be coming back to this. because passion is an extremely important element of this film, and it carries the narrative from start to finish.
at its core, brief encounter is a melodrama. melodrama has its own sect of film theory, but in this case ill do my best to keep it simple. and its really important to recognize that this film is british - british melodrama are two extremely different experiences and come from two completely different places of expression.
american melodrama, the most broad sense, was a stylistic set of films, usually from the 40s-50s (even some released in the early 60s) which use a lot of the tropes of classic cinematic narrative story telling - but as irony, parody, or pastiche. great examples of these films would be rebel without a cause, mildred pierce, from here to eternity, imitation of life, etc. in all of these films, and again i am paraphrasing because there is so much relating to melodrama as its own theory and practice, there is an onus on emotional expression and sensationalism. the narrative is driven by passionate action, emotional action, and, almost always, the swell of music weve come to recognize in hollywood cinema. music swells with character emotion, thus assisting in informing the audience in how to feel, and so we are ok regardless if these characters are successful in their plight, because we have felt.
british melodrama operates from an entirely different perspective. yes, like their historical theatrical roots, they favor spectacle and avoid realism. and, again, there is a reliance on the music to lead the narrative. however, the focus shifts from the societal body to the familial body; body concrete rather than body politic. culturally, this is a significant change from the usual reserved emotional experience within britain. and that is where brief encounter becomes something extremely important.
brief encounter was released in 1945, in a post-war period when there were significant changes to womens daily and societal lives, and this film really hones in on the causative anxieties that are born from these sudden changes and, yes, sudden notions of emotional liberation from their families - a new found independence. with the context of this film coming off the tails of WWII, in a post-war society in which there is meant to be peace, laura calls the act of falling in love violent which, for an audience member at the time of release, would have immediately associated that element of violence with war time violence. love is a threat. its dangerous. love at this level is repulsive. love is an insurrection - love is a revolution. and it came to her without her permission. she is bereft. she is on the brink of collapse - and ordinary women, the traditional family house wife, is never meant to feel so eager to ruin her family for a sensation that is, inherently, selfish.
so this brings us back to passion. something that comes up quite a lot in brief encounter, most explicitly at the cinema when alec and laura see a trailer for a film called flames of passion (this is a real film btw! and you might be able to watch it - it too is a melodrama. theres also a queer reading within brief encounter, because of the inclusion of flames of passion, but thats for another day). this brings us to the moral question of love as violence. for this, we can turn to hume and his 4 thesis on moral philosophy, the morals that drive humanity. primarily we will look at the following points:
1. reason alone is not enough to motivate the will, but rather is a slave to passion 3. moral distinction is derived from moral sentiment: feelings of approval (praise) and disapproval (shame, blame) through our inter-relations with others, or through the perceptions of others as they perceive us
for hume, the passions are simply emotions, but they are broken down as direct or indirect. desire is a direct emotion and it arises, without thought, from a place of good or evil, pain or pleasure - and it is only after these feelings have arisen that we are able to consider the feeling. by that same token, bodily or carnal appetites, our carnal desires, is another instinct that arises from unknown origin and only is able to be thoughtfully experienced after we have been confronted with it. and that is the most important piece - desire and carnal desire is an instinct. for hume, love, on the other hand, does not directly cause action - because love is not an instinct. love is learned.
in brief encounter, laura is admitting that not only does she thoughtfully love alec - love in a way that would not necessarily cause action, but brings her unparalleled pleasure in comparison to a man who simply helps, but she desires him. desires him enough to take action, to release the shackles of her political body and engage in her carnal body, with an appetite that is almost reductive in theory, aligning her with something base. this pleasure inherently causes her pain, yet still, she craves it - without morality.
and through her perception of those around her - her friends, her acquaintances, her own husband - she distinguishes this moral experience as shameful. but, in that shame, she still does not surrender her carnal body. her apetite is awakened, unable for her to be returned to its normal, thoughtful state. at war, now, with herself and her desires, laura is conflicted and ruined, simply because she learned to love and to desire, a violence an ordinary housewife should never experience.
