Under The Spotlight #1 | Barbuta (UFO 50, PC) (SPOILER FREE)

Last week I was finally able to get my grubby mitts on UFO 50, an expansive compilation of fifty fleshed out retro-styled games with a pretty funky premise. The lore behind UFO 50 goes that, in the 1980s, a group of misfits with boring day jobs and dreams of making games for a living got together and formed a game studio called Ufosoft and made thrilling home computer games through the decade. All these decades later, these games are being dusted off and released to the public once again in one giant collection!

Barbuta, canonically solo-developed by one of these would-be game designers on a company computer in 1982, is the title that kicks off the collection. It is a very slow-paced platformer affair and can be completed within 5-10 minutes if you know what you're doing, although it is still pretty fleshed-out and isn't intended as a silly minigame. In fact, none on the compilation are.

There is no direction on where to go or what to do, your appropriately barbute-clad character moves slowly, attacks with a sword with strange hit detection that can make enemy encounters a bit frustrating, jumping can also be frustrating as some jumps require pixel-perfect positioning and timing... BUT! It still manages to be fun and rather addicting as I've logged over 30 sessions of it and counting as of writing. It captures that endearing clunkiness games of that era had, which is the whole point of the perceived shortcomings.

Also, there is much more to this little gem than you might think too. It is teeming with secrets and other fun little easter eggs that you can discover the more you explore the game screen-by-screen. It is an adventure platformer where you feel like you're on two adventures, one being the main objective of the game and the other being the hunt for the secrets that the game holds within. It really helps the game feel more 'full' and gives you more reason to play through it again and again.

I've only completed the game once to date and am currently pursuing a cherry run (a cherry is UFO 50's reward for beating a game without losing a single life) and have been having issues with the quest so far, but once I obtain it I will move on to another game in the collection. When I've got more direct insight and experience with it, I will write a more detailed review and even a walkthrough or guide kind of deal because it can be a doozy, and I don't think all of its secrets have been fully uncovered yet a few months on from UFO 50's release.

And when that's all said and done, I may do the same for other titles in the compilation that catch my interest as much as Barbuta has. It really is a charming experience that has managed to eat into my ventures with Red Dead Redemption and Vampire Survivors... more on those to follow too.

Chapter 428: Manageable Households

The one thing I forgot to re-do was Eirinn's hairstyle and outfits.

He's simply adorable in his layered outerwear with the blue freezer bunny.

I can't help but think he grew fond of it after spending time with Katherine.

She autonomously went into the nursery and picked him up to play with him.

She's definitely a keeper and I like her more than ever as Aeric's partner.

But now it's time to get back to toddler skills before the new baby arrives.

Juliette claps excitedly as Eirinn gets even closer to maxing the skill.

Then she settles down with him on the living room tiles to finish his talking skill.

He's pretty close to maxing it, so no worries there.

Ewen's busy playing with his peg box.

I can't resist just watching him play for a bit as he's such a cutie.

Since he still needs some fun, I leave him to it.

And head across town for that visit I promised the spares.

Here's the renovated Sanctuary, their new home!

It doesn't look all that different from the front.

But that extra roof along the backyard was built to accommodate our two hate-the-outdoors spares.

Because it covers the now enclosed pool house!

And even extends over the outdoor bar area, to protect everyone's light skin.

I did a bit of renovating on the main floor.

Removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room so it's now open concept.

I think I may have even changed up the color scheme a bit, leaving the turquoise as it's Cam's favorite color.

And I turned the room in the back left into a nursery.

The main floor also has a living room, computer room, and a 3/4 bath with a shower off the entry.

The 2nd floor has three bedrooms with double beds, one of them an ensuite.

There's a fourth bedroom with two twin beds for the girls when they age to children.

And a full bath in the hall.

Providing them with four bedrooms and two baths in this section.

But there's a bonus 5th bedroom with an ensuite that's separated from the others via an upstairs balcony!

It even has a staircase to the ground floor, providing easy access to the work out room, sauna, and pool.

The perfect place for a teen boy to have some privacy and assert his growing independence.

Or as a guest room for out-of-town visitors.

I catch Aeric giving their new home an appreciative look as he says, "Nice place, Watcher!"

"It was a beautiful home to start with so I can't take the credit. I just tweaked it a bit to suit all of you."

"All of us?"

"Yes. The covered pool for your mother and uncle. An extra napping mat for the twins  in the nursery, as well as an activity table on the covered back porch."

"But what about…"

"Take a look in the side yard, near the garage."

One the side and back porch, I've placed two easels, mostly for Daeric, but available to anyone who wants to paint.

And I added Aeric's all important martial arts equipment, both a training dummy and a board breaker!

If Leila chooses to brave the outdoors to use it, that's on her.

I honestly couldn't find a spot big enough inside to accommodate it.

Besides, Aeric's the disciplined one and he doesn't mind being outside.

Not yet anyway.

Then I spot Alana in the yard and realize, as a sim who can't stand art, she may not appreciate those easels!

But maybe it's only art hanging on the walls that bothers her?

I never noticed her having an issue with all the easels and paintings-in-progress back at the main house.

Or even paying any attention to all of Juliette's photographs in the basement.

Art aside, I was hoping that Alana was going to pick up Gwen and bring her inside.

But since she's carrying her laptop, I guess she's planning on doing some writing.

Luckily, Leila's bringing little Sarah inside.

So, at least one of the twins is being cared for.

Maybe Leila will come back and get Gwen.

Unfortunately, she doesn't.

She just puts Sarah down on the floor in the nursery and complains about the potty chair!

Speaking of potty chairs, back at the main house, Ewen finally gets potty trained.

Now he can use the potty on his own.

With Ewen more comfortable, Jaeger sits down with him in the living room and teaches him to talk.

Of course, Jaeger can't resist talking about painting, "One day I hope to paint something that will rival the masters!"

But Ewen doesn't seem at all interested in the topic.

Ewen does seem to have a bit more interest in the movies as he repeats that word excitedly.

Another budding couch potato or maybe a movie star?

But there's a lot that doesn't interest Ewen at all.

Simoleans, jellyfish, and cooking having him remaining stubbornly silent.

Finally, "I got a promotion before I quit' prompts him to say, "po'motion!"

Jaeger definitely has his work cut out with teaching Ewen to talk.

But since they share the Insane trait, I'm sure they'll work it out.

Given enough time.

So, I head back to the spares new home.

This time with Tabatha so I can accomplish a certain task.

Getting Gwen into the nursery!

No one in the house seems to care that she's been outside all day.

She's not outside currently, as she's in the garage playing with her IF doll, Peaches.

But when I have Tabatha, who was obviously heading for the enclosed pool, visit the home, she rings the doorbell by the door to the garage!

Great. This lot makes the door on the back of the garage the 'front door'.

I click on the door to the actual house, hoping to be able to reset it to it's proper function, but the option isn't there.

I guess it's only available on your home lot.

I give up on that and focus on my sims as Aeric has now invited his grandmother inside.

Of course, that means inside the garage!

Well, it's where I need her to be so that works out.

Even if it makes no sense to consider the garage the house.

Once Tabatha's inside, she picks Gwen up and gives her a comforting snuggle.

"There, there sweetie. Gamma's got you now. I'll get you settled in the nursery with Sarah."

With Gwen being properly looked after, I check back at the main house.

I arrive just in time to see Fallon and Eirinn playing together.

Well, not exactly together, but at least near each other.

And they look super cute playing with their toys.

Checking their needs, Fallon just needs fun, no surprise as he just got home from school.

But he's already working on that by playing with Peanut.

Which is the 2nd Peanut in the current family as Aeric's IF is Peanut too.

At least they have different last names with Aeric being a Cullen.

Eirinn's not playing with his IF doll, thankfully, but a green dinosaur and his fun need is fine.

But he needs to get to the potty and fast!

Juliette gets him there just in time and encourages him, saying, "You're so close, sweetie. I think this will be your last training session."

And she's right, with Eirinn's bar so close to the top, when he finishes, potty training is mastered!

Juliette changes his diaper to max his hygiene and dresses him in his everyday sailor suit.

So even though I didn't manage a photo of him mastering potty training.

I do get this adorable shot of him playing with his IF doll, Hesper.

While in the living room, I get to see Ewen master talking with Jaeger pleased as punch.

"We've done it, my boy! With daddy's help you can now chat with everyone!"

He's so thrilled with Ewen's accomplishments that he pops a wish to see him become a genius!

It could happen, but with randomized traits, it's a long shot, so I don't promise it.

Juliette and Jaeger's twin sons, Ewen and Eirinn, have mastered both potty training and talking.

All that's left is teaching both of them to walk.

I'd thought Ewen had learned the skill using the walker previously, but I guess that happened in the playthrough I lost.

Maybe that will give one or both of his parents a chance to pop the wish to teach him the skill.

Especially once their baby wishes complete, which should be happening soon!

The spares are settling into their new home and I've kept my promise to stop by and show it off.

I've even had Tabatha visit to spend time with them.

Since she's still over there, we'll get another peek into the spares lives at the mercy of NRaas Story Progression.

It definitely handles keeping your town alive and progressing better than the EA version, but it can still throw in a few surprises!

Samhain will dawn, from the sunset or the 31st till the sunset on the 1st of November! How honourable a day it, when Celtic men are proud and glad of their hearth and kindred. But as we celebrate and invite spirits of all walks while warding off mischievous fairies we cannot forget in our mourning of them and the deeds they have done. For though Samhain blankets us with the year’s first frost, we must celebrate more than the end of the harvest or the spirits of our ancestors. For there are those who fought and died that we might live on more.

Our history is full of those who stood against colonial powers, and tonight, I light a candle for the brave souls who fought in battles and uprisings. There is no greater honour than to give ones life for their Celtic race. Brave men like William Wallace! Of course, not the Hollywood version played by Kiwi anti Semite but the real man who rallied a nation with grit and resilience. Or the fierce and venerable Gaelic women of Cumann na mBan who resisted in the fight for Irish independence and never surrendered. And how can I remove honour from who fought silently? Those that continued to speak our languages, customs, and beliefs when both state and society tried to erase them? The faithful elect who lived away for centuries in shame and dishonour? All for that hopeful promise that their country would survive and our fathers legacy would not be stained by the filth and the impure stain of collaboration?

Our race is going to survive. Despite everyone and everything her tongue and blood have endured. Despite England we are still here, Despite the Danes we are still here and despite the Romans we are still here and we will outlive them. What remains now of Rome? That great Empire which conquered the Brythonics but were taught rightly in the misty hills of Alba? It's now simply ruins while our people still live, while our race still beats high with hope. The Danes? What remains of the Viking hordes who were beaten by the Gaels of Eirinn and Alba? Or of the proud Saxon? Who was resisted, with varying fortunes, by all Celts bar our Vretoned brothers?

We are just one race, all of us. The seed of the Gael and Brythonics must join hands for Celtdom and Celtdom alone. No more foreign imposition and diktat which brings only misery nor internal petty squabbles but instead a single host. A single flag, a single race which will surely be glorious. Once the Celts unite you can be sure that the vile Saxon will abandon his post and lose his fighting spirit. Once the Celts unite we will again be prosperous, trade and wealth will flow freely between the nations. The Celtic Man is naturally industrious and an intellectual with great venerable attributes. Alas, sadly, who is pulled down by foreign impositions of vice like alcoholism, drugs and the like which has made our race weak. We have fallen asleep, a deep sleep of domestication, of being conquered, of sufferance and shame with great dishonour. Which infest every carpet or our society, but if the promised day comes and all the Celts awaken then the dogs shall become wild again! And the wild dogs will chase out the foreigner and the traitor and the Celtic spirit will never again be wrong to us. I guarantee a united Celtic nation would become a prospoerus Republic within ten years of unity. It would surpas the living standards within five and he comparable only to the Nordic lands within ten and would surely outgrow them. We are an industrious race of hard workers, of intelligent men and woman and a race deeply stubborn and proud and those are good things! If we work hard the Celts can achieve anything under the sun and we will obtain our dream of a prosperous, peaceful, stable and loving pan Celtic state from Scotland till Kernow till Vreton.

I have total confidence that this will happen, it's a divine promise. I've done some early divination for the year and I am certain it's due to happen. I can give no date but all the signs suggest that the lot awaited day is coming. I'm unsure if I should ever had the great joy of seeing it but probably not.

With all WWE content live and past now being hosted on Netflix, I had been mulling over subscribing to the service mainly just to catch some live shows for the first time in a while, but I've also grown resentful of Netflix as a company and its practices as they pretty much define the phrase "you will own nothing and be happy" despite fleecing customers with ridiculous ever-rising subscription prices.

I was generally gravitating towards just following the live posting from accounts on social media as I normally do... then this segment happened on RAW, perhaps the final to ever air on TV, between CM Punk and Seth Rollins, who are set to headline next week's RAW as it makes its live debut on Netflix.

Punk/Rollins is a feud that has been heavily built up over the past year since Punk returned at Survivor Series 2023 after nearly a whole decade away from the WWE. The two have a lot of history, with Seth being openly critical of how Punk has talked about the company since the bitter parting of ways in 2014, and this been woven into the rivalry itself, and this war of words just really blurred lines and hit home the deep and personal nature of it all.

Every word these two blasted at each other felt deeply bitter and personal, and it was what motivated me to finally subscribe to Netflix because I would hate to miss this match. I have a feeling it will be one of those "you HAD to be there" instances. I'm not expecting pristine livestream quality, but what matters is that I am guaranteed nothing less than quintessential pro wrestling artisanship from these two.

THIS is how you hype a match.
