Eileen Chang (Chinese: 張愛玲; September 30, 1920 - September 8, 1995), also known as Chang Ai-ling or Zhang Ailing, her pen name was Liang Jing, was a Chinese-born American essayist, novelist, and screenwriter.
She is a well-known feminist in Chinese history. Chang was born with an aristocratic lineage and educated bilingually in Shanghai. She gained literary prominence in Japanese-occupied Shanghai between 1943 and 1945. However, after the Communist takeover of China, she fled the country. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, she was rediscovered by scholars such as C. T. Hsia and Shui Jing. Together with the re-examination of literary histories in the post-Mao era during the late 1970s and early 1980s, her work became popular once again among Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the Chinese diaspora communities. Chang was a realist and modernist writer. Chang's most important contribution was her construction of an alternative wartime narrative, one that deviated from the grand accounts of national salvation and revolution. Via Wikipedia

For International Women’s Day, I thought I’d shine a light on some of my favourite female authors, as well as a few that I’m wanting to read this year. . For anyone who’s followed my website, you’ll know that one of my all-time favourite books is Geek Love by Katherine Dunne. It was one of those books that I happened to read at just the right time in my life. With an incredible sub-text and an engaging storyline, I highly recommend it to everyone. . Under the Net was a book I picked up on a whim at a charity shop – as you can tell from the completely battered exterior. Iris Murdoch is a writer who knows how to weave in the comical alongside the serious, jumping between the two when necessary. . I’ve spoken in the past about Zadie Smith and her importance within British 00’s literature and White Teeth being the epitome of this honour. . Eileen Chang was an author that, initially, I didn’t connect with. I thought her work was over-celebrated and dated. Yet, as I continued reading her short stories, I started to see the importance of her work. Chang often openly portrays China, which gives her a lot of charm. I’m hoping I can continue my reading journey with Naked Earth. . The Good Women of China by Xinran is another book that I will read this year. After setting intentions to read more of what I want to learn about, I quickly stumbled across her work. The book tells the story of the Chinese children living in poverty – some being adopted abroad, others suffering from the communist party’s mishaps. It looks to be an interesting read nonetheless. . . . #Zadiesmith #Irismurdoch #KatherineDunne #GeekLove #Xinran #China #EileenChang #womensday #internationalwomensday #women #womenempowerment #strongwomen #happywomensday #empoweringwomen #happyinternationalwomensday #womensrights #genderequality (at Liverpool, England, UK) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMK4FoIg1Cj/?igshid=1vyzvbjo7g6xo

Located in Shanghai's city center, the Changde Apartment is often associated with Eileen Chang. Born in Shanghai in 1920, Chang is a key figure in Chinese literary history. Because of her, the café has a steady stream of visitors every day.

“If getting married is about maintaining one’s basic life, then marriage would be a long term prostitution.” Love in a Fallen City is a collection of stories by Eileen Chang. The collection is considered to be a classic. The stories are all love stories that occur during the fall of Hong Kong and right after WWII. Other than being beautifully written stories about love set during wartime, that…

#WomenInTranslation month continued: modern Chinese writer Eileen Chang(张爱玲)’s book Little Reunions (Chinese title: 小团圆) was translated into English earlier this year by Jane Weizhen Pan and Martin Merz. Have you ever read any of her works? There were many which she co-translated herself! “She wasn’t a bird in a cage. A bird in a cage, when the cage is opened, can still fly away. She was a bird embroidered onto a screen – a white bird in clouds of gold stitched onto a screen of melancholy satin. The years passed; the bird’s feathers darkened, mildewed, and were eaten by moths, but the bird stayed on the screen even in death.” — Eileen Chang

Spaces don't lie
Do you believe that spaces eventually imbibe the living cells & become the person that has lived in them? Like how pets begin to look like their owners or how couples start looking alike over time.
I walked into a quaint #bookstore cafe by chance few weeks ago. It was called L's cafe and had another Chinese name. It conveyed a special vibe, different from many of our contemporary #spaces. The walls, the artefacts, & the air in general was oozing an ambiance of art, culture, love and melancholia. My skin felt the faintly breathing walls, but I think it could have mostly been in my head or may be it was my own breathing that I was hearing. Nevertheless something was certainly alive at that moment.
This is where we decided to have our next #book club session which was on last Sunday. One of the members was thrilled that we had chosen this cafe and through her I discovered something beautiful about the building. This bookstore cafe was once home to one of China's most influential modern writers #Eileen Chang sometime in the 1930's. Some of her greatest works were produced in this very space!
Voila! spaces don't lie! :) .———————• #Eileenchang #chinesewriters #shanghaidiaries #history

Quote
Shanghai's clocks were set an hour ahead so the city could save daylight, but the Bai family said: We go by the old clock. Ten o'clock to them was eleven to everyone else. Their singing was behind the beat, they couldn't keep up with the huqin of life.
