The Archetypes of Red Rose, White Rose
I need to balance my brain out due to sudden onset of depression. It is the result. Rommel is probably the only general who, even if you draw him from the back, he's still recognizable- flowers, a camera, and love for beauty. Rommel has a Venus-Mercury conjunct with a direct Neptune influence; he is going to appreciate artistic expressions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, this colored-doodle with an unintentional Mucha vibe has the energy of his wife Lucy in mind. According to some sources, Rommel wrote home to Lucy daily, as it was reported to be his mental crutch- I imagine it to be transcendental emotional support, not unlike my own experience, my own relationship with our Tumblr community here. Whether you guys interact with me directly or not, you keep me alive. My sincere thanks to you.
Lucy was a formal dancer in Danzig with a decent middle-class background, her father seemed to be a land owner- Lucy being able to do art, probably added to his admiration for her- fellow artists, angelic companionship.
I suppose he did need emotional supports, and a lot of it-- Rommel is the only high commander with whom Kessering "the smiling Albert" did not get along-- which is a feat. After all, Kessering was very renowned for his exceedingly cordial and diplomatic temperament. The same could be said of von Rundstedt, the calm, gentlemanly, old Prussian field marshal. These two could put up with some bad BS from any one else, except Rommel. He was too intense, too mentally off-balance, too difficult to deal with for his colleagues.
Tumblr media
There are a few things I noticed from Rommel's biography (including the Trail of the Fox, 2005), that allow me to make some observations. His love for Lucy appears to be non-sexual. They had their only son 12 years after marriage. That is a pretty long time, not customary with a Scorpio man who has a 8th house Mars (who is supposed to have at least above average sex drive).
As a matter of fact, Rommel had a daughter with Walburga Stemmer before his marriage with Lucy was finalized. At that point Rommel’s family felt the need to step in and strong-armed him back with his fiancée-- one reason being to prevent the young lieutenant from the pitfalls of sex and alcohol. In my humble opinion, the subtext here might be Lucy would not lead him astray in that regard, therefore his conservative family would rather have him marrying Lucy.
A side note, Stemmer family still holds a collection of hopelessly romantic letters from Rommel. Did Rommel write comparable letters to Lucy at that point in time? A bit hard to tell.
Tumblr media
I could not recall which article comments that Rommel was "hen-pecked' in the household, but Lucy was dominant at home, that part had been very true.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ouch, I don't know, some aspects of this living environment must've been toxic to Rommel no matter how much some folks wants to romanticize it. It is horrible to be in a friend group where there's a mean girl boss who takes pride in ruling over her husband and turning any girl who crosses her into a persona-non-grata. But I digress. Back to my title.
Nevertheless, for me, Lucy being archetypal White Rose still holds water as a concept.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Red Rose- White Rose archetypes originated from the same-titled short novel by Zhang Ailing, one of the 20th century's greatest female writers. She depicts love's tragedies as Chin dynasty fell apart and China marched into an era of post-colonialism, world war II, civil wars and partisan conflicts-- and eventually, modernity.
White rose is your ideal wife, the guardian of your family's social standing. She is angelic, she seems docile, she reminds you that you are from a place of honor and integrity, not of seedy backgrounds and carnal desires. White rose kills love by loving you, by being stable, by calming you down whenever you freak out. Very slowly, she castrates you, she brings you home to domesticate you.
The Red Rose symbolizes those dark desires, a black hole that sucks you in to have sex with you, a fragrant bed, a sex dungeon you do not have the will power to claw yourself out of. Red rose loves you by conquering you, destroying you and everything you represent and cherish with triumphant strides. Very quickly Red rose tears you down, burns all your bridges, until you are beyond recognition, until you are flesh, blood, fire and desire, a literal mess.
Tumblr media
It is implied in Ailing's novel that men invariably choose the White Rose, because they are human, all too human. Marrying her, he regrets it; not marrying her, he regrets it even more. Such is love's tragedy in the face of humanity, and tragedy is the only inevitability in Ailing's universe. That's why I pull Lucy in as a faint through-line in my Montgomery x Rommel fanfics... not that I am going to write any more, I don't think so.
And yes, Red Rose is synonymous with Bernard Montgomery, in my fandom brain's humble opinion.
I know I am weird.

TW: suicidal ideation and ed
can you write hcs for the recoms with a suicidal reader who struggles with self-harm and anorexia? sorry if triggering!!
Absolutely. 💞 I'll do my best to honor this struggle. I know it isn't easy. If any of you don't feel up to reading this, please prioritize your mental health. Also, please put your age at the top of your page. Trying to weed out minors. 🩵
All ageless & empty blogs will be blocked. No minors!

Zdinarsk sees you sucking in your stomach at the mirror, hands fluttering nervously at your sides. Her hands come down on your shoulders and your eyes meet in the mirror. She steers you away and distracts you with a movie.
Lyle noticed your weight loss after you got up every morning and worked out with him until he started to suspect and would subtly change the workouts to "try something new" when he just didn't want to push you too hard.
Mansk sees your struggle with food restriction and instead of trying to get you to eat a bunch at once, he's always making new recipes and will run up to you excitedly to try "just a bite".
Fike sitting with you quietly, just a comforting presence. Will make sure to cuddle and keep you warm, keeping your hands wrapped in his.
Zhang is always close behind with a giant hoodie ready for you to wear. Was worried when you felt dizzy and scooped you up to carry you around.
Warren is so quiet, you didn't hear him come into the communal bathroom and when he opened up the shower curtain, you stared at each other and he gently took the knife from your hand. He helped you clean up and put a bandage on. Right after, he crouched down and pulled you against him, squeezing you tight.
Brown always tries to make you laugh. Is constantly roping you into jokes and silly pranks on the others just to get a smile from you.
Walker always makes sure you take time for yourself and will make sure you go to the spa at Bridgehead regularly. if anyone tries to harass you, she makes sure that's the only time they ever do.
Ja always checking your cuts to make sure they're healing okay. His hands are gentle and kind.
Prager will sit quietly with you and hold you close to him. "I get it."
Lopez will cheer you on every day, arms up in the air just excited to get another day to be with you.
Quaritch caught you on the edge of the roof before, staring longingly at the horizon, just wanting a bit of peace. He pulled you from your thoughts, arms wrapping around you as he held you close. "Not today. I've got you, hon."

Note: I haven't ever had anorexia, but I have had an unhealthy relationship with food and am working to heal that. I hope you guys are all able to heal from what ails you and even if you can't, you are still worthy. Suicidal ideation is unfortunately too common in my brain, though, and I just want you guys to know you're not alone. We've already come so far.

Eileen Chang (Chinese: 張愛玲; September 30, 1920 - September 8, 1995), also known as Chang Ai-ling or Zhang Ailing, her pen name was Liang Jing, was a Chinese-born American essayist, novelist, and screenwriter.
She is a well-known feminist in Chinese history. Chang was born with an aristocratic lineage and educated bilingually in Shanghai. She gained literary prominence in Japanese-occupied Shanghai between 1943 and 1945. However, after the Communist takeover of China, she fled the country. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, she was rediscovered by scholars such as C. T. Hsia and Shui Jing. Together with the re-examination of literary histories in the post-Mao era during the late 1970s and early 1980s, her work became popular once again among Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the Chinese diaspora communities. Chang was a realist and modernist writer. Chang's most important contribution was her construction of an alternative wartime narrative, one that deviated from the grand accounts of national salvation and revolution. Via Wikipedia

欲言难止/Eternities Still Unsaid Till You Love Me -- by 麦香鸡呢
所以被忘记也没有关系,他已经遇到过最好的人。 So having been forgotten is of no consequence, because he has already met the best person. -- Chapter 85
A modern ABO story set an ambiguous alternate timeline, with a secret crush/pining A/A relationship
(no, we are not talking about Sunset Boulevard)
The story is free on Changpei.
Synopsis [spoiler-free]
Lu Heyang is the son of the Executive Minister of The Union. During an excursion to an infamous underground fight ring with his friends, he recognizes star fighter "Number 17" is Xu Ze, a fellow student at The Prep Academy. The Prep is a selective secondary school catering to elite families, but poor orphan Xu Ze attends on a scholarship due to being a rare Class-S Alpha.
Xu Ze fights for the quick money he can make in the ring, and is trapped in an exploitative contract because he needs money to treat his grandmother's mental and physical health problems. He has been harboring a secret crush on Lu Heyang for years, but he never plans to act on his feelings because they belong to different worlds.
Lu Heyang is also curious about the Alpha from the fight ring, and he quickly sees through Xu Ze's feelings in their interactions at school. Behind Lu Heyang's life of wealth and privilege is a cold an ruthless Alpha father, and beloved family members whose happiness and marriage have been sacrificed as political pawns. Lu Heyang reciprocates Xu Ze's feelings, for the break Xu Ze offers from his world of rules and manipulation, and also the sincerity and depth of Xu Ze's devotion.
Their teenage love affair ends more suddenly and dramatically than anyone has expected. The shady boss of the underground fight ring grows desperate and deranged as his business collapses, while Minister Lu applies pressure to get back control over his son. A devastating truth from Xu Ze and Lu Heyang's past surfaces, and their lives diverge again like it was always meant to be.
Fortunately, they meet again years later, as a decorated Colonel from the Air Force and a promising young military doctor ...
my thoughts
There is something so deliciously bittersweet about pinning, and this novel is dripping with it. Xu Ze secretly keeps everything Lu Heyang has ever given (handed) to him and tracks their every encounter. He never expects Lu Heyang to notice him, befriend him, and reciprocate his feelings. When they get together, he doesn't expect to it to last. But none of that matters. In an adolescence riddled with loneliness, poverty, ailing family members, and semi-self-imposed social isolation, every moment with Lu Heyang feels like a gift he has stolen from a better life that he does not deserve.
This relationship really reminds me of Zhang Jue and Chen Boqiao from Sunset Boulevard by Kabiqiu. The nearly-invisible person deep in unrequited love never expects their feelings to be returned, so there is a surprising audacity and directness in their interactions with the objects of their affection. The golden boy is almost a little suspicious about this unexpected devotion and affection, but they eventually chooses approach it with equal level of sincerity. They become the ones to teach their partners what it means to be loved back, and ironically, they to take initiative to secure the relationship since their partners don't really believe it will actually happen....
In this universe, Alpha-Alpha relationships are uncommon and unconventional, but no one actually does or says anything to the main couple about it. The main characters themselves don't really agonize over this either, other than thinking about the practical aspects of getting acceptance for their relationship.
I do wish the relationship can feel a bit sweeter -- which is a strange request, because it is really sweet all things considered, but Xu Ze doesn't dare to believe Lu Heyang could ever be within his reach. The narrative feels "unnecessarily" pessimistic and depressing because Xu Ze is narrating through his insecurity and obliviousness, even while Lu Heyang is working hard to make their relationship work.
"Right, of course I only care about my reputation and not at all concerned about you," Lu Heyang would say sarcastically, because he is a little angry that Xu Ze would think that. But Xu Ze just thinks, "Yes, that is completely reasonable, he is agreeing with me!"
I guess all of Xu Ze's brain cells are reserved for his future career as an award-winning medical researcher and military doctor, so he has none to spare for his relationship with Lu Heyang ...
Other random memorable details
Lu Heyang's Alpha father is going straight to the top of "Worst Danmei Dad" ranking. *screams into a pillow in rage* But the Omega dad loves his children and does a lot to help them.
One of Lu Heyang's best friends, Gu Yunchi, is the protagonist of another novel (that the author announced but hasn't written yet). It's kind of amusing seeing tidbits of his drama in the background knowing there is enough dogblood to fill up an entire novel.
The main couple gets a pregnancy scare as teenagers, so Lu Heyang takes Xu Ze to the Gu family's private clinic. They sign the test results with Gu Yunchi's name, who is also an Alpha and gong in his own novel .... The comment section has high hopes for the comedic potential of this detail in Gu Yunchi's own novel
Xu Ze has a really good Omega friend throughout high school and his medical career. I love how much he cares about Xu Ze, and he often calls out how stupid Xu Ze is being about Lu Heyang.
This is one of the few times where I really want the main couple to have a baby. Of course Xu Ze wants a baby with Lu Heyang, but the text also shows that he really likes kids! They left this possibility open during the pregnancy scare, but it never happens in the story ....

Qin Annexes the Six States, Part 2 (TTSJBM01)
[In Qin, Wei Yang implements land reforms and defeats Qin's main rival at the time, Wei, and as a reward he is made Lord of Shang. However when the Duke dies, the cost for severely punishing members of the heir's entourage must be paid.
With Qin now the dominant state, the "wandering persuader" Su Qin travels to Yan and Zhao to build an anti-Qin alliance. He also engineers the rise of an old acquaintance, a certain Zhang Yi, as an important minister in Qin.]
11th Year [358 BC], Qin defeated the Han regiments at Xi Mountain.
14th Year [355 BC], Duke Xiao of Qin and King Hui of Wei met at Duping.
15th Year [354 BC], Qin defeated the Wei regiments at Yuanli, cut off 700 heads, and captured Shaoliang.
18th Year [351 BC], Wei Yang of Qin besieged Wei's Guyang and took its surrender.
19th Year [350 BC], in Qin, Shang Wei built watchtowers, palaces, and courtyards at Xianyang, and moved the capital there. He ordered that among the people for father and sons, older and younger brothers to rest within the same house was to be forbidden. He combined the various small vilalges and hamlets into single counties, and for [each] county set up a Prefect and an Assistant; there were thirty-one counties. He abolished the well field system and opened up the criss-crossing paths. He made even the dou and tong [volume measurements], the balance weights and beams [for weight measurement], and the zhang and chi [length measurements].
21st Year [348 BC], in Qin Shang Yang furthermore made laws for collecting land taxes, and carried them out.
26th Year [343 BC], the King [of Zhou] granted the Seniority to Qin. The various feudal lords all sent their congratulations to Qin. Duke Xiao of Qin send Noble Son Shaoguan to lead the regiments and meet with the various feudal lords at Feng Marsh to hold court with the King.
29th Year [340 BC], Wei Yang talkled to Duke Xiao of Qin, saying:
Qin is to Wei like a person with illnesses of the belly and heart. If not Wei annexes Qin, Qin will annex Wei. Why? Wei is located west of the mountains and narrow defiles, their capital is Anyi, and the border with Qin is on the He, but they alone monopolizes the profits from east of the mountains. When they profits, they go west to infringe on Qin. When they are ailing, they go east to harvest the land. Now, due to my Lord's worthy sagacity, the state depends on it for its flourishing, while Wei in the past years have been greatly routed in Qi, and the various feudal lords have betrayed them. It is possible owing to that at this time invade Wei. Wei will not hold off Qin, but surely move east. Afterwards Qin will occupy the fastnesses of the He and the mountains, and turn eastward to arrange the various feudal lords. This is the legacy of emperors and kings.
The Duke followed him, and sent Wei Yang to command troops and invade Wei. Wei sent Noble Son Ang to command and defend against him. The armies were opposing each other. Wei Yang dispatched a letter to Noble Son Ang which said:
I at first was on friendly terms with the Noble Son. Now we both are the generals of the two states. [I] could not bear that we attack each other, [If I] could meet face-to-face with the Noble Son to swear oaths with each other, [we could] take pleasure in drink and disband the troops, and so calm the peoples of Wei and Qin.
Noble Son Ang considered it to be so, and therefore they then met with each other. The oath-taking had finished and they were drinking, Wei Yang, who had hidden armoured soldiers, assailed and took prisoner Noble Son Ang, and following that attacked the Wei regiments, and greatly routed them. King Hui of Wei was afraid, and send an envoy to present the land of Hexi to Qin for peace. Following that, he left Anyi, and moved the capital to Daliang. Then he sighed and said:
I regret not employing Gongshu's words.
Qin ennobled Wei Yang at Shang with 15 towns, and titled him Lord of Shang.
31st Year [338 BC], Duke Xiao of Qin passed away. His son King Huiwen was installed. Noble Son Qian's followers reported that the Lord of Shang intended to rebel, and he issued out functionaries to arrest him. The Lord of Shang absconded to Wei, but the people of Wei did not receive him, and he went back inside Qin. The Lord of Shang therefore together with his followers issued out troops from Shang and went north to strike Zheng. The people of Qin attacked the Lord of Shang and killed him. They tore him apart with chariots to be toured around, and fully exterminated his family.
34th Year [335 BC], Qin invaded Han, and took Yiyang.
36th Year [333 BC]. Earlier, a native of Luoyang, Su Qin, argued to the King of Qin to use techniques for uniting Under Heaven, the King of Qin did not make use of his words. Su Qin then left, and argued to Duke Wen of Yan, saying:
The reason that Yan has not been violated and robbed by armoured troops is that Zhao has been sheltering it to the south. Moreover, should Qin attack Yan, the battle would be further than a thousand li away, while if Zhao attacks Yan the battle would be less than a hundred li away. In all cases to not worry about trouble a hundred li away but put weight in what is more than a thousand li away, a plan can not be more faulty than this. [I] hope the Great King would go along and be friendly with Zhao. When Under Heaven is as one, the state of Yan would surely have no worries.
Duke Wen went along with him and gave Su Qin chariots and horses. And so he argued to Marquis Su of Zhao, saying:
At the present time, among the established states east of the mountains, none are stronger than Zhao. In being loathed by Qin none are likewise like Zhao. However, Qin does not dare to raise up troops to invade Zhao, dreading the deliberations of Han and Wei in its rear. Qin's attacks on Han and Wei are not limited by famous mountains and great rivers. Little by little the silkworms eat away at them, spreading out to their state's capitals before stopping. Han and Wei are unable to hold off Qin and are certain to become vassals to Qin. If Qin has no designs from Han and Wei, calamity will hit Zhao. Your Subject uses a chart of the lands Under Heaven to record that the lands of the various feudal lords are five times that of Qin, and calculates that the soldiers of the various feudal lords number ten times those of Qin. If the Six States are as one, combine their strength westward and attack Qin, Qin will surely be routed. In all cases, the people [in favour of] crosswise alliances [with Qin] all wish to cut of land from the various feudal lords to give to Qin. If Qin is successful, they will personally be wealthy and honoured, When the states are being troubled by Qin, then they are not with them in their troubles. Thus is it that the crosswise people day and night do their utmost to use Qin's power to terrify and threaten the various feudal lords and so seek to cut off land. For that reason [I] desire hope the Great King will carefully plan against it. [I] humbly consider the Great King's plan not as good as uniting Han, Wei, Qi, Chu, Yan and Zhao to be allies and friends in turning against Qin, make the generals and ministers Under Heaven assemble by the Huan River, and make a public pledge to join together in a blood-oath, the pact saying: “If Qin attacks one state, the five [other] states will each set out with keen regiments, some to bend down Qin, some to rescue them. They who do not like in the pact, the five [other] states will unite in invading them.” When the various feudal lords allies as friends to reject Qin, Qin's armoured [soldiers] will surely not dare to set out for the Han Valley to harm East of the Mountains.
Marquis Su was greatly pleased. He lavishly waited on Su Qin, and honoured, favoured and bestowed gifts on him, to make a pact with the various feudal lords.
It happened that Qin sent the Rhino-Head to invade Wei. He greatly defeated their regiments, more than 40 000 people, seized their general Long Jia, captured Diaoyin, and further intended to go east with the troops. Su Qin feared the Qin troops would arrive in Zhao and defeat the alliance pact. He recalled none who it would be possible to send for employment in Qin, so he therefore incited and infuriated Zhang Yi, and had him enter Qin.
Zhang Yi was a native of Wei. He and Su Qin together served Premier Scholar of Guigu, and studied the techniques of vertical and horizontal alliances. Su Qin considered himself not to reach up to him. Yi drifted among the various feudal lords but had no luck with it. Following that when he was in Chu, Su Qin for that reason summoned and then humiliated him. Yi was afraid, and that among the various feudal lords only Qin was able to make trouble for Zhao, and thereupon he entered Qin. Su Qin secretly dispatched a retainer to offer gold, money and wealth to Yi, and Yi obtained an audience with the King of Qin. The King of Qin was pleased with him, and used him as Dignitary for Guests. The retainer bid his farewells, saying:
Lord Su worried Qin would invade Zhao and defeat the alliance pact, and considered that except you my Lord nobody would be able to obtain control of Qin. The reason he incited anger in you my Lord, and sent Your Subject secretly to Qin to provide my Lord with riches, was entirely the plan and scheme of Lord Su.
Zhang Yi said:
Aha, This is among my techniques and yet [I] did not realize it. I do not reach up to Lord Su, that is clear. On account of my gratitude to Lord Su, in the time of Lord Su what could Yi dare to say!
