Darley – recently tamed, but still recognised as one of the most challenging courses to play to your handicap. Eight courses within 25 miles of Ayrshire Coastline. Darley golf course is a 2.2 mile (5,000-step) route located near Troon, Scotland. This route has an elevation gain of about 26.2 ft and is rated as easy.

Historically, golf has been played on the site since 1910, but the course as it is now was established in 1951. Though shorter than many of its Ayrshire neighbours, including sister course Lochgreen, Darley was exceptionally tight and unforgiving, with banks of heather and gorse lining the narrow landing strips. However, this course is now a must-play for all golfers as the green staff have done a great in creating a playable course for many handicap egolfer. Troon Links sits at the Train Station and has easy access from Glasgow. Darley is one of 3 courses and allows the golfer to walk from the town centre and experience the Open town of Troon. Darley heads East towards Kilmarnock Barassie with great views of the Isle of Arran.

What’s the best way of warming up your electric car? - Technology Org

What’s the best way of warming up your electric car? - Technology Org
Until now, car manufacturers and others have been recommending using electricity from the grid to warm up your car on cold winter mornings. This will save the battery and ensure maximum range. But research is showing that this isn’t always necessary. Nor does it save you money.

“We don’t need a fully-charged battery for most car journeys, so preheating in this way puts an unnecessary strain on both the electricity grid and our wallets”, says researcher Åse Lekang Sørensen i SINTEF.
She and her colleagues at NTNU have been calculating how much mains electricity is being used to preheat electric cars (EVs) and how this impacts on the supply grid.
Smart people charge at night
Our increasing use of EVs means that preheating is putting a significant strain on the electricity grid. This makes it important to know how our use of EVs impacts on total electricity consumption and raises issues about the smartest ways of using electricity.
“The amount of electricity we use to preheat EVs is small in terms of the big picture, but it nevertheless impacts on consumption when the load on the grid is greatest.
After parking their EVs at home in the afternoon, many people wait until nightfall before charging them. This is smart because capacity in the grid is greater at night and the electricity least expensive.
However, preheating takes place mostly in the morning on the coldest winter days, when the total load on the grid is at its highest and the electricity at its most expensive.
“The amount of electricity we use to preheat electric cars is small in comparison with the big picture, but it nevertheless impacts on consumption when the load on the grid is greatest”, says Sørensen.
For a single household this will often lead to higher electricity bills because the spot price is normally highest in the mornings.  In some cases, it may also result in a higher grid tariff, if the electricity you use for preheating means that you end up in a higher standing charge band. The standing charge band is that part of your electricity bill calculated based on your highest 24-hour peak use each month.
Many makes of EV allow you to use electricity from the battery for preheating. Sørensen recommends that it is better to charge your EV at night, as many people already do, and use the battery to preheat the car in the morning, without connecting it to the mains. She only recommends preheating from the mains if you are starting out on a long journey in cold weather.
Calculating energy consumption during charging
A research team from SINTEF and NTNU has been testing the preheating of some standard electric car makes under different weather conditions. The project has been carried out at the CEER research centre Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities, also known as ZEN.
Five of the most common EVs sold in Norway were tested as part of the experiment –  the BMW i3, Jaguar I-PACE, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3 and VW eGolf. Together, these make up 38% of the electric cars currently on Norwegian roads. The results were as follows:
Most of the EVs consumed between 3 and 8 kW electricity at the start, which was later reduced to about between 2 and 4 kW after 10 to 20 minutes.
The preheating process lasted between 15 and 45 minutes.
Energy consumption during preheating was up to 2 kWh for the majority of EVs, with a maximum value of 5 kWh.
The researchers also calculated how a number of different variables impacted on energy use.
“We measured how the electricity consumed in the preheating of EV cabins is influenced by the car itself, the charging point, the time it takes to warm the car, the exterior and interior air temperatures, as well as charging habits”, explains Sørensen. “Charging habits refer to when, how long, and how often we connect to the charger”, she says.
Finally, the team compared the energy consumed for EV cabin preheating with other uses of energy in a typical apartment block.
“This is relevant because it tells us how great a proportion of the total electricity consumed by a household goes towards preheating the car, and thus how the preheating process impacts on electricity bills.

Roadtripping with an Electric Car
We did it: we took a long road trip with our 100% electric car. Here’s what we discovered:
Tumblr media
1. It cost us about $90USD in charging costs from the southwest coast of B.C. to the San Francisco Bay area.
2. It took us WAY longer to get down there. Partly because electric vehicles have reduced range in the cold weather, (and we woke up to -1C in Medford, Oregon), and partly because we didn’t realize that not all fast chargers are created equal. The bottom line is that it took us 14.5 hours to do what normally would be an 11 hour driving day. We changed this up on the way home, never actually doing more than 4-5 hours of driving, so it took about 6-7 hours depending on our charging. However, as we entered the Bay Area and hit unseasonably warm temperatures our range increased.
3. There’s no shortage of fast chargers down the I-5 corridor. Although beware, the Electrify America and EVgo ones are the quickest, (about 45-55 minutes to fully charge), others can take up to 75 minutes. While 75 minutes is still ‘fast’ compared to a trickle charge at home with your 110V plug, after a full day of driving it seems painfully slow.
4. Get the PlugShare app. This was our lifeline. The brown icons are the fast chargers and when you click on it here’s what I think are the two most important things to check: a) what company it is, (see above for preferences), and b) look at the check ins. That’s where you will see when it was last used, and whether it was working. We cruised into a charging site with only 12 miles, (19kms), left on the battery only to discover the charger was out of service. Fortunately, there are toll free numbers on the chargers and the fellow at the other end was able to redirect us to a new nearby charger, even though it was a different company.
5. Get a few charger apps. I recommend the Electrify America and EVgo ones. Those two are all over the place and they’re the fasted ones. You get a better rate with their app, as well as notifications when your car is almost charged and a receipt.
6. Make the charging work for you: enjoy a meal, do some shopping, whatever.
7. You can walk through a drive through. Totally irrelevant until it’s not. We were charging beside a fast food restaurant, (on our very long day of driving), when we realized we weren’t going to get to our hotel in time to get a pizza. I tried to go in to order a take away, but only the drive through was open, so I walked through, explained my situation, pointed out the car charging, and they were great! This was in the middle of nowhere southern Oregon!
Once we got to the Bay Area, the electric car was great! It’s small so it’s easy to zip around and park on their narrow streets and short driveways. Of course it seemed like every 2nd person there drove a Tesla, (that’s fair, as Tesla is a local company), so we saw the opposite of what we have experienced here in B.C.: the Tesla charging stations were packed, sometimes with cars waiting in line, while we, (in our e-Golf), could just cruise right up and plug in.
Driving home was far more relaxing, as we figured out how it all worked and make it work for us. We did some wine tasting, saw some family, and did some much missed U.S. shopping while our wee car charged away.
Some charging stations had beautiful views, but many are located at Super Walmart parking lots, which come complete with the whole Walmart cultural experience, lol!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bottom line is that if you’re in a hurry, taking an electric vehicle may not be the way to go, but if you have time slow down and enjoy the ride, you can’t beat the cost.
