Josephine Signing the Act of Her Divorce
Artist: Edward Matthew Ward (British, 1816-879)
Date: 1853
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia
Description
The Emperor NapolƩon and the Empress Josephine signed the papers confirming their divorce on 16 December 1809. Josephine was unable to bear children; therefore the couple were incapable of ensuring the succession of the Bonaparte dynasty. Their divorce was thus more a matter of State than the diminishing of their mutual affection. Here, Ward focused on the noble sacrifice that Josephine in particular made for the apparent good of France. He also incorporated many symbolic references to NapolƩon and has even extended this to the elaborate decoration of the picture frame.

Edward Matthew Ward - Leicester and Amy Robsart at Cumnor Hall. 1866
Amy, Lady Dudley (nĆ©e Robsart; 7 June 1532 ā 8 September 1560) was the first wife of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, favourite of Elizabeth I of England. She is primarily known for her death by falling down a flight of stairs, the circumstances of which have often been regarded as suspicious. Amy Robsart was the only child of a substantial Norfolk gentleman. In the vernacular of the day, her name was spelled as Amye Duddley.

Ages of Dracula casts
This ask made me wonder how close past Dracula casts were to the ages of the characters as established in the novel. Looking at these adaptations:
Dracula (1931)
Horror of Dracula (1958)
Dracula (1974)
Count Dracula (1977)
Dracula (1979)
Bram Stokerās Dracula (1992)
Dracula (2020)
In some cases characters are merged or changed; I've associated each character with the person who comes closest to having the same name.
Jonathan Harker (early 20s)
Dracula (1931) - David Manners, 31
Horror of Dracula (1958) - John Van Eyssen, 36
Dracula (1974) - Murray Brown, 37
Count Dracula (1977) - Bosco Hogan, 28
Dracula (1979) - Trevor Eve, 28
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Keanu Reeves, 28
Dracula (2020) - John Heffernan, 39
On average, Jonathan Harker is cast as 32.
Mina Murray (early 20s)
Dracula (1931) - Helen Chandler, 25
Horror of Dracula (1958) - Melissa Stribling, 32
Dracula (1974) - Penelope Horner, 35
Count Dracula (1977) - Judi Bowker, 23
Dracula (1979) - Jan Francis, 32
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Winona Ryder, 21
Dracula (2020) - Morfydd Clark, 31
On average, Mina Murray is cast as 28.
Lucy Westenra (19)
Dracula (1931) - Frances Dade, 24
Horror of Dracula (1958) - Carol Marsh, 32
Dracula (1974) - Fiona Lewis, 28
Count Dracula (1977) - Susan Penhaligon, 28
Dracula (1979) - Kate Nelligan, 29
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Sadie Frost, 27
Dracula (2020) - Lydia West, 27
On average, Lucy Westenra is cast as 28.
Jack Seward (29)
Dracula (1931) - Herbert Bunston, 57 (aged up to be Mina's dad)
Horror of Dracula (1958) - Charles Lloyd-Pack, 56
Dracula (1974) - none
Count Dracula (1977) - Mark Burns, 41
Dracula (1979) - Donald Pleasence, 60 (Lucy's dad in this one)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Richard E Grant, 35
Dracula (2020) - Matthew Beard, 31
On average, Jack Seward is cast as 47, and also assigned Dad.
Quincey Morris (mid to late 20s)
Dracula (1931) - none
Horror of Dracula (1958) - none
Dracula (1974) - none
Count Dracula (1977) - Richard Barnes, 33
Dracula (1979) - none
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Billy Campbell, 33

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute'sĀ 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more ā¦ November 5
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/df82e170bd819694756e0b9e07b6fcab/58b4ca57d3883705-18/s500x750/679040fe70a179899fd0199fb4d8d58163e0b555.webp)
1698Ā ā England:Ā William Minton, a 19 year old servant, is used as bait to entrapĀ Capt. Edward Rigby, the first homosexual victim of entrapment by the Society for the Reformation of Manners. He was tried for sodomy. These Societies were formed in tower hamlets, London, in 1690, with their primary object being the suppression of bawdy houses and profanity. A network of moral guardians was set up, with four stewards in each ward of the City of London, two for each parish, and a committee, whose business it was to gather the names and addresses of offenders against morality, and to keep minutes of their misdeeds. By 1699 there were nine such societies, and by 1701 there were nearly 20 in London, plus others in the provinces, all corresponding with one another and gathering information and arranging for prosecutions.
1884Ā ā Born:Ā James Elroy FleckerĀ (d.1915); English poet, novelist and playwright. Born in London, and educated at Dean Close School, Cheltenham, where his father was headmaster, and Uppingham School, he studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and Caius College, Cambridge. While at Oxford he was greatly influenced by the last flowering of the Aesthetic movement there, under John Addington Symonds.
He died of tuberculosis in Davos, Switzerland. His death at the age of thirty was described at the time asĀ "unquestionably the greatest premature loss that English literature has suffered since the death of Keats".
HisĀ Collected PoemsĀ (1916) were published the year after he died at age 30. His poetry shares one trait in common with that of his contemporary,Ā Rupert Brooke: the sexuality is ambiguous. There is no question, however, that Flecker was Gay. His lover was the classicistĀ J.D. Beazley, one of the world's great authorities on Greek vases.
His most widely known poem isĀ "To A Poet A Thousand Years Hence". The most enduring testimony to his work is perhaps an excerpt fromĀ "The Golden Journey to Samarkand"Ā inscribed on the clock tower of the barracks of the British Army's 22nd Special Air Service regiment in Hereford.
Bryan Lourd (R) and husband Bruce Bozzi
1960Ā āĀ Bryan LourdĀ is an American talent agent. He has been partner, managing director and co-chairman of Creative Artists Agency (CAA) since October 1995.

Lourd marriedĀ Bruce Bozzi, the co-owner of The Palm, on October 12, 2016, and Lourd legally adopted Bozzi's daughter, Ava. They divide their time between a penthouse apartment in the West Village, in Lower Manhattan, New York City and a house in Beverly Hills, California.
Lourd was elected to the board of trustees of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2011. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. He was appointed to the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 2009 by PresidentĀ Barack ObamaĀ and to the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2015.

Henson, and Peter Jƶback.
1969Ā āĀ The Homosexual Information CenterĀ protested at the offices of theĀ Los Angeles TimesĀ to protest the newspaper's refusal to print the word "homosexual" in ads after it refused to print an ad announcing a group discussion on homosexuality.
1979Ā āĀ Leonardo NamĀ is an Australian actor. He made his breakthrough as Roy inĀ The Perfect ScoreĀ (2004), and gained further recognition for his roles as Morimoto inĀ The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo DriftĀ (2006) and Brian McBrian inĀ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2Ā (2008). In 2016, Nam began starring as Felix Lutz inĀ WestworldĀ (2016āpresent) which brought him widespread recognition.
Nam was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to South Korean immigrant parents. At the age of six, he moved to Sydney, Australia. Nam attended Sydney Technical High School and studied architecture at the University of New South Wales. Nam left Sydney to follow his dreams of an acting career in New York City, United States, at the age of 19. He studied with several acting teachers in New York, includingĀ Austin PendletonĀ andĀ William CardenĀ at HB Studio.
Before his Hollywood success, Nam travelled to New York City to pursue his acting career. His first few nights he slept in Central Park and then found jobs working as a waiter and bartender. His breakthrough role came in his performance of Roy inĀ The Perfect ScoreĀ (2004).
He had a small role in the 2005 filmĀ The Sisterhood of the Traveling PantsĀ as Brian McBrian, a hardcore gamer. He played Brian again inĀ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2; in the sequel, his character has a larger role. In 2016, he joined the cast of the HBO seriesĀ Westworld. In 2018 he was featured in the music videoĀ "Waste It on Me"Ā byĀ Steve AokiĀ featuring BTS.
Nam is married toĀ Michael Dodge. They have twin sons (born 2017) together. The family lives in San Diego.
1983Ā āĀ Andrew Hayden-Smith, born Andrew John Smith, is a British actor and television presenter best known for his work with CBBC.
Auditions for popular CBBC children's serial dramaĀ Byker GroveĀ were held at his school and he won the part of Ben Carter, making his first appearance in the eighth series of the show in 1995.
Initially just using the name Andrew Smith, he appeared as a guest on Saturday morning CBBC showĀ Live & KickingĀ with several other characters from the show. Smith soon became a regular guest on the show. This led to appearances on other shows and also in teen-magazines, as well as two pantomime appearances. In 2001 he applied for Equity membership and was accepted under the name Andrew Hayden-Smith (Hayden being another surname in his family), as the name Andrew Smith was already taken.
In 2004, the ex-Byker Grove actor and CBBC presenter Andrew did the unthinkable for a young man on kids' TV - he told the world he was gay. At the risk of being outed by a newspaper, he beat the tabloids to the punch and did an interview withĀ AttitudeĀ magazine:
"Coming out is pretty scary. It's bad enough when you're almost certain that the majority of people around you will be totally cool with it. I was 21 and presenting kids TV at the time and was commended for what everyone kept saying was such a brave step."
It did his career no harm, and he's proved an inspiration - and eye candy - for young gay men across the country.
Andrew has since appeared regularly on stage and inĀ Doctor Who. Hayden-Smith appeared in the episodesĀ "Rise of the Cybermen", "The Age of Steel"Ā andĀ "Doomsday"Ā as Jake Simmonds in the 2006 series ofĀ Doctor Who. He returned to CBBC having completed the filming, but decided that he wished to concentrate on acting. His final day of presenting was on 7 July 2006, the day before his third and finalĀ Doctor WhoĀ appearance.

"The white rose was [strongly] associated with the Virgin. It should therefore be acknowledged that one of the motivations behind the emblem being adopted by the house of York, and promulgated by Edward IV alongside the sun device, was its religious resonance. The Virgin was a favoured saint of many royals, not least due to her association with fertility, birth and nurturing lineage, and Marian references can be found in political images and narratives of the fifteenth century. Alongside St Anne, the Virgin was a focus of Yorkist religious devotion. Both Edward IV and his mother Cecily, duchess of York (d. 1495), committed their souls to the Virgin in their respective wills, and images of the saint were depicted in the north clerestory windows in the Yorkist mausoleum at Fotheringhay [...] Edward further demonstrated his favouritism by making the Virgin the joint patron saint of the Order of the Garter in 1469."
-Matthew Ward, The Livery Collar in Late Medieval England and Wales: Politics, Identity and Affinity
#I'm mainly posting this for the Order of the Garter part because I didn't know that!#Edward IV#Cecily Neville Duchess of York#medieval#my post#Ward claims that the depiction of the saint at Fotheringhay was 'probably at Cecily's instigation'#which I've removed because it's extremely unlikely#as Laynesmith points out there's no evidence Cecily even visited Fodrygnhey after her husband's death#and did not have any financial responsibility for any of the works and renovations there#nor would Edward IV have needed Cecily's instigation in the first place considering he himself was committed to the imagery#and official records called the manor 'the kingās castle of Fodrygnheyā#queue

6/14/24.
J. Mamana (Providence, Rhode Island) has a new album coming out in August, but I've been listening to "Nothing New in the West" for the past couple of days. There's a lot to sink your ears into here. These are complex, well-arranged and orchestrated songs. Mamana graduated from Brown University in 2016 and set about writing and recording this album. While Mamana's music doesn't actually remind me of Brendan Eder, the maturity of his musical vision and ability to pull it off is reminiscent of Eder.
Sound wise, this recalls the work of Wild Beasts, David E. Williams, Momus and Matthew Edwards.
This is released by Holy Family - a label cofounded by Mamana, Robert Merritt (Butterfly Music) and Theodora Ward.
