t’s Sunday (Saturday actually) and HALLOWEEN! And since our favorite holiday fell on a Sunday (still Saturday) today’s Sunday Classic for Connor is the surprisingly dark 1983 Walt Disney Halloween-time horror fantasy “Something Wicked This Way Comes”. Directed by Jack Clayton (“The Innocents”) and written by Ray Bradbury, adapted from his 1962 novel. While admittedly a flawed film (mainly marred by reshoots) I still adore it for two main reasons. First: the fine performances of Jason Robards, Vidal Peterson, Shawn Carson, Royal Dano, Pam Grier and the brilliant Johnathan Pryce making his American film debut as the terrifying Mr. Dark. Second, is the story itself as the novel is by far my personal favorite of Bradbury’s works. Little did I know that many years later this novel and film would come to mean so much more to me thanks to Connor. When I first read the novel a zillion years ago I identified with the boys Will Halloway & Jim Nightshade who loved Halloween. But now I can’t help but strongly identify with Will’s father Charles Halloway who like me had a son late in life and feels the stresses of his age. I would like to think that as a father I too like Halloway could face putting those stresses to the test when pure evil threatens the life and soul of his child. I got a little worried as the movie was giving Connor a bit of a fright, but to my relief he wound up REALLY enjoying it which only makes this film all the more special to me. “...October, "a rare month for boys." By October, school is already well underway, and young children cannot wait for Halloween. But this year Halloween cannot wait either.” Ray Bradbury - “Something Wicked This Way Comes” https://www.instagram.com/p/CHBJ8C6D6IZ/?igshid=sn3wpcskfb3n
